This paper presents a simple but effective overmodulation scheme for direct torque controlled reluctance synchronous motor (RSM) incorporating field-weakening (FW) operation. To overcome the problems of high torque ripples and variable switching frequency experienced by conventional direct torque control (DTC), constant-switching-frequency-based torque regulator is employed. By combining the proposed overmodulation scheme with this torque regulator, the dynamic torque response and constant power speed range of RSM drives are improved. Simultaneously, low torque ripples are obtained. Furthermore, an adaptive activation algorithm is proposed to activate overmodulation only when high torque output is demanded. This algorithm also contributes to ensure the stability of drives with overmodulation through effective flux regulation, which is essential for FW operations. This paper investigates and evaluates the performance of a single-phase split-source inverter (SSI), where an alternative unidirectional dc–ac configuration is used. Such configuration is utilized in order to use two common-cathode diodes in a single device instead of using two separate diodes, resulting in minimum parasitic inductance in the commutation paths. In this paper, the analysis and modulation of the single-phase SSI using this alternative configuration is discussed, and the analysis of the low-frequency component in the dc side is introduced. Moreover, the features behind employing the triangular, the trailing-edge sawtooth, and the leading-edge sawtooth carriers with the single-phase SSI are discussed, and the differences among these carriers are highlighted. In order to highlight the performance of the proposed SSI, a comparative study is conducted with the two-stage architecture and the single-phase quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI). The introduced analysis is enhanced with simulation results using MATLAB/PLECS models, where a 1-kVA single-phase SSI is designed and simulated. Finally, the designed 1-kVA single-phase SSI is implemented experimentally and tested at different operating points, i.e., at different voltage gains, and a maximum efficiency of $95.5\%$ is obtained. Zero-common-mode-voltage (CMV) operation of multilevel inverters results in reduced dc-bus utilization and reduced linear modulation range. In this paper, a method to increase the linear modulation range for zero-CMV operation without increasing the dc-bus voltage using a cascaded multilevel inverter with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the peak fundamental output voltage can be increased from 0.499 to 0.637  \textV\text{dc} with zero CMV inside the linear modulation range. Also, various pulse width modulation (PWM) switching sequences are analyzed in this paper, and the PWM sequence that gives minimum current ripple is used for the zero-CMV operation of the inverter. The inverter topology with single dc supply is realized by cascading a two-level inverter with two floating-capacitor-fed full-bridge modules. For the case of unbalanced grid voltages, active power of pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier is reduced due to the current limitation of power switches. Under unbalanced grid voltages, two existing control methods for the PWM rectifier are widely adopted, one for instantaneous active power control, and the other for balanced positive sequence current control. To maximize the PWM rectifier instantaneous active power capability and minimize active power oscillations during voltage dips, a control method combining balanced positive sequence and instantaneous active power control is proposed. The limitations of these two control methods are given, and the fluctuations on active and reactive power using the proposed control method are discussed in detail in this paper. The analysis in this paper is based on p.u. system, and some conclusions are drawn. Corroboration of the expected features of the proposed control method is carried out by means of experiments. This paper presents a simple and generic model of a dual active bridge converter valid throughout its range of operation. It is suitable for all operating modes and modulation strategies such as phase-shift, extended phase-shift, dual phase-shift, or triple phase-shift modulation. It hypothesizes that any mode of its operation characterized by the duty ratios ($d_1$ , $d_2$) of the two full-bridge converter ac voltages and the phase shift ($\phi$) between them can be decomposed into four parallel dual active bridge circuits operating in simple phase-shift modulation. This paper models a huge family of electrical machines featuring simple salient poles in a unified way based on the general airgap field modulation theory. The modulation principle is analyzed by introducing the magnetomotive force (MMF) modulation operator, which characterizes the influence of a variable reluctance block on the primitive magnetizing MMF distribution established by field winding. Popular machine topologies are investigated in detail from the perspective of an airgap field modulation mechanism. The iron core magnetic potential drop due to the finite slot opening depth and the impact of iron saturation on the parameters are considered by proper theoretical indication. In addition, the modulation effect of salient poles highly depends on the slot-opening-width-to-pole-pitch ratioϵ. The effect can be neglected whenϵ< 0.3 and the best modulation results will be achieved whenϵ= 0.5. It is also found that mainly three different harmonics parts modulated by salient poles contribute to airgap flux density and torque production. Straightforward relations between the frequency-domain or amplitude information of performances indexes and topological parameters can be obtained obviously by certain analytical expressions without heavy finite-element analysis (FEA). The cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter has become a promising candidate topology for utility-scale photovoltaic systems thanks to merits like modular structure, distributed maximum power point tracking (MPPT), and direct distribution grid access without medium-voltage transformers. However, module mismatches arising from nonideal elements like partial shading and parameter variations pose a technical challenge for such systems. If not dealt with properly, module mismatches can lead to adverse effects like unbalanced dc-link voltages of the modules, distortion of grid current, and reduced power generation. Conventional methods, such as reactive power compensation and level-shifted pulsewidth modulation (LS-PWM) based compensation, can alleviate this issue, but their performances are still limited by the allowable modulation range of power converters. In this paper, a compensation strategy combining reactive power compensation with a novel modulation method is proposed to extend the operating range in terms of module mismatch. Experimental results on a 2.4 kW/208 V single-phase setup are presented and have demonstrated that the proposed method can not only ride through a larger range of module mismatches but also improve solar power utilization and system efficiency owing to reduced switching events, noncompromised MPPT, and less required reactive power. In this paper, a space-vector-modulation method for indirect matrix converters is proposed to improve the output voltage quality in high modulation index ratios and to reduce the peak common-mode voltage (CMV). A novel approach in the rectifier stage modulation generates a variable dc-link voltage that is controlled to drive the inverter stage on the limit of the linear modulation during each switching period. This allows inherent formation of the output voltage using only two active vectors per sector, which reduces the peak CMV and enhances the output voltage quality. This paper proposes advanced speed control for a five-leg voltage source inverter (FLVSI) that drives the dual three-phase induction motor system used in industrial manufacturing processes. The advanced speed control method consists of two controllers: 1) The first is a slip controller that satisfies the application requirement, i.e., to control the mechanical speed of two motors equally regardless of the load condition. 2) The second is an angle controller that satisfies the FLVSI requirement, i.e., to control the phase angle difference between the two motors for minimizing the common leg current because the common leg current can be twice higher than other leg's current depending on the operation condition of the dual motor. Stability analysis of the two controllers under advanced speed control is implemented, and the whole performance of the advanced speed control for the FLVSI-fed dual-motor drive system is shown to identify its feasibility through the experimental results. This paper presents the development of an effective space vector modulation (SVM) regarding matrix converters (MCs) for the full range of the voltage transfer ratio (VTR), whereby a superior output performance was achieved. The proposed method uses all of the vectors adjacent to the reference output-voltage vector in one sector to build a unique general switching pattern to drive the MC. For the purpose of pursuing the high output performance of MCs, the proposed switching pattern can be applied to low and high VTRs with a unique modulation strategy owing to generalized equations. In addition, an output current-ripple-minimization technique is also accomplished through a design of the duty cycles of zero vectors that enhances the output performance for the MC. A multilevel inverter topology for a four-pole induction-motor drive is presented in this paper, which is constructed using the induction-motor stator winding arrangement. A single dc source with a less magnitude when compared with conventional five-level inverter topologies is used in this topology. Therefore, power balancing issues (which are major challenges in conventional multilevel inverters) are minimized. As this configuration uses a single dc source, it provides a path for zero-sequence currents because of the zero-sequence voltages present in the output, which will flow through the motor phase winding and power electronic switches. To minimize these zero-sequence currents, sine–triangle pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) is used, which will shift the lower order harmonics near to switching frequency in the linear modulation region. However, in the case of overmodulation, harmonic voltages will be introduced close to the fundamental frequency. In this regard, a modified SPWM technique is proposed in this paper to operate the drive in the overmodulation region up to the modulation index of 2/\!\surd3. The proposed quad two-level inverter topology is experimentally verified with a laboratory prototype on a four-pole 5-hp induction motor. This paper proposes an analytical procedure for computation of all pairs of valid switching angles used in pattern generation in five-level H-bridge cascaded inverters. The proposed procedure eliminates harmonic components from inverter output voltage and, for each harmonic, returns the exact boundaries of all valid modulation index intervals. Due to its simple mathematical formulation, it can be easily implemented in real time using a digital signal processor or a field-programmable gate array. This paper introduces a new fault-tolerant strategy for a cascaded H-bridge (CHB)-based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) with a single failure in power switches. A modified selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation technique is proposed for postfault operation which generates the maximum possible balanced line-to-line voltages at the ac side of the converter. The dc-link voltages of H-bridge cells are used as another degree of freedom; and by an efficient amount of increase at the dc-link voltages, the rated capacity of STATCOM is restored without any extra component. Furthermore, by applying an effective voltage balancing scheme, voltages of dc-side capacitors are kept balanced in postfault operation. A three-phase seven-level CHB-based STATCOM is simulated in PSCAD/EMTDC environment to verify the feasibility and performance of the proposed method and also experimental results are provided based on a three-phase five-level scaled down laboratory prototype which validates the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Three-phase impedance source inverters can be modulated using many modulation schemes, which are basically classified into two categories: three-phase-leg shoot-through-based (3P) and single-phase-leg shoot-through-based (1P) modulation schemes. These different modulation schemes have been comprehensively reviewed in Part I. Hence, in this paper, a comparative assessment among these different modulation schemes is introduced using the conventional Z-source inverter (ZSI). In this comparison, the ZSI voltage gain and stresses, current stresses, effective switching frequency of its different parts, spectrum of its output voltage, and switching losses are considered for each modulation scheme. Such comparative assessment introduces an effective benchmark for the researchers in order to determine the differences among these various modulation schemes, and easily select the appropriate one for their application. Finally, the state-of-the-art modulation schemes are experimentally assessed using a 3-kVA three-phase ZSI, where the shown results are consistent with the presented discussions and comparisons. A novel space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) strategy for three-phase four-wire neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. The m-mode controllability of a three-phase four-wire NPC inverter, which is modeled as a switched linear system, is investigated. Then, on the basis of analysis of the m-mode controllability, taking the three-level property and the continuity of switching sequence into account, the controllable sets with the three-level property can be a new solution for the NPC inverter. With the sets of less operating modes, new modulation strategies named 18-mode SVPWM strategy, including 18-mode SVPWM(I), 18-mode SVPWM(II), and 18-mode SVPWM(III), are put forward. Compared with the conventional SVPWM strategy, the switching frequencies of the proposed 18-mode SVPWMs modulation strategy are significantly reduced by one-third. Therefore, the overall losses of the system can be reduced and the performance of the inverter can be improved. High frequency isolated dc–ac converters are becoming popular in on-board auxiliary inverters for railway applications. Compared to conventional fixed dc-link inverter (FDCLI), pulse dc-link inverter (PDCLI) has simpler circuit topology and higher power density, but greatly different control algorithm. This paper is going to study the application possibility of PDCLI for railway auxiliary inverter, and will be concerned with algorithm and their performance comparison between approximately independent hybrid modulation (AI-HM) and six-pulse demodulation hybrid modulation for PDCLIs, including fundamental principle and harmonic performance of output voltage under zero portion effect. Then a piecewise compensation of modulation wave and a carrier phase-shift strategy are proposed to improve the output voltage quality of AI-HM under zero portion effect. Vibration-based fault diagnosis of a planetary gearbox is challenging due to the revolving planet gears inducing modulation of vibration signals. For accurate fault diagnosis, researchers have suggested that vibration signals should be extracted by window function when the planet gears are positioned under the sensor. However, vibration modulation characteristics can be affected by operational and geometrical uncertainties. Thus, fault-related features can be inadvertently discarded when the window function is employed. Alternatively, periodicity analysis of anomalies can be employed with the entire vibration signal without the use of window function. However, it is challenging in a planetary gearbox because the fault-related features are also modulated. This paper proposes a health data map for toothwise fault identification in a planetary gearbox. In the proposed approach, samplewise health data are aligned in the domains of a pair of gear teeth of the planetary gearbox. The proposed approach represents the health state of every pair of gear teeth, while making it possible to isolate the location of any faulty teeth in the gears. For demonstration of the proposed method, two case studies are presented: an analytical model and a 2-kW testbed. This study adopts the method of third-order harmonic voltage injection (THVI) to move the peak value of a reference voltage toward the high capacitor voltage and increase the utilization rate of the capacitor voltage. This method can lower the cost or enlarge the capacity of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) when applied in high-voltage direct-current transmission. In this paper, the principle of THVI is introduced. Two calculation methods for modulation waves are studied, and the mathematical expressions of the capacitor voltage under all operating conditions are deduced. Thus, the optimal magnitude and phase of the third-order harmonic voltage are determined under all operating conditions. The mathematical expressions of the optimal magnitude and phase of the third-order harmonic voltage are obtained, and their online calculation burden is reduced. In this paper, the remedial operation of switch faults will be investigated comprehensively for T-type-three-level-inverter-fed dual three-phase motor drives. The open-circuit switch faults in multiple phase legs are discussed at first. The faulty conditions are classified into five categories. Different remedial strategies, namely Type-I to Type-V schemes, are proposed for different faulty conditions. In particular, three kinds of Type-III fault-tolerant control schemes are proposed by using medium-voltage vectors to synthesize small-voltage vectors, in such a way that the mid-point voltage in a dc link can be stabilized well. Then, the short-circuit faults in both clamping switches and half-bridge switches are investigated. By analysis, their operation conditions are equivalent to conditions loss of both P and N voltage levels and open-phase faults, respectively. Thus, the corresponding remedial strategies can be applied accordingly. Particularly, a voltage compensation control method is proposed for conditions, where open-switch faults coexist with open-phase operation induced by short-circuit faults in half-bridge switches. This paper proposes the combination of a novel modified quasi-Z-source (MqZS) inverter with a single-phase symmetrical hybrid three-level inverter in order to boost the inverter three-level output voltage. The proposed single-phase MqZS hybrid three-level inverter provides a higher boost ability and reduces the number of inductors in the source impedance, compared with both the single-phase three-level neural-point clamped quasi-Z-source inverter and the single-phase quasi-Z-source cascaded multilevel inverter. Additionally, it can be extended to obtain the nine-level output voltage by cascading two three-level pulse width modulation switching cells with a separate MqZS and a dc source, which herein is called a single-phase MqZS cascaded hybrid five-level inverter (MqZS-CHI). A modified modulation technique based on an alternative phase opposition disposition scheme is suggested to effectively control the shoot-through state for boosting the dc-link voltage and balancing the two series capacitor voltages of the MqZS. A new space vector modulation, i.e., ZSVM3, for three-phase quasi-Z-source rectifier (qZSR) is proposed. All switches in the three-phase bridge can be turned on and turned off with zero current or zero voltage using the proposed ZSVM3 with no auxiliary circuit. The current through the inductors of the quasi-Z-source network operates in a boundary conduction mode or discontinuous conduction mode to achieve all freewheeling diodes turned off with zero-current switching (ZCS). At the same time, the switch in the quasi-Z-source network can be turned on with ZCS. Besides, the voltage stress of all switches is equal to dc-link voltage. In this paper, the torque production of fractional-slot concentrated-winding (FSCW) permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) is analyzed from the perspective of the air-gap field harmonics modulation accounting for slotting effect. It is found that the average torque of FSCW PMSM is produced by both the principle of conventional PMSM and the magnetic gearing effect. A finite-element analysis (FEA) based equivalent current sheet model and harmonic restoration method is first used in FSCW PM machines with different slot–pole number combinations to quantify the respective contribution of the conventional PMSM and the magnetic gearing effect to the average torque. The influence of slot opening on the magnetic gearing effect, cogging torque, and torque ripple is analyzed. The results show that the magnetic gearing effect makes a nonignorable contribution to the average torque when a large slot opening stator is used. The expression of the gear ratio in FSCW PMSMs is derived. The influence of gear ratio on the contribution of the magnetic gearing effect to the total torque is investigated by FEA. The hybrid modulation strategy using both low-frequency square-wave modulation and high-frequency pulse-width modulation can extend the stable operating region of a cascaded H-bridge converter. However, it does not control accurately dc voltages of converter but balances them by charging or discharging dc capacitors based on the state of system, which could aggravate fluctuation of dc voltages. If cascaded H-bridge converter is used in photovoltaic field, the aggravated fluctuation on dc capacitor voltages will result in further losses in energy harvesting of solar cells. To address this issue, a modified hybrid modulation strategy is presented in this paper. When dc-bus measured voltages are close to their reference voltages, these H-bridges operate in a zero mode. Adding appropriate zero state can prevent grid current charging or discharging the dc capacitors whose voltages have already reached their control goals. Therefore, the proposed technique is capable of suppressing dc voltage fluctuation, and, thus, improving the output power of solar cells. This paper proposes a topology of special rotor-type permanent-magnet (PM) machine named rotor-PM flux-switching (RPM-FS) machine, which is evolved from stator-PM flux-switching (SPM-FS) topology and exhibits high power density, wide-range speed regulation, and good overload capability. The operation principle of RPM-FS machines is investigated based on the field modulation theory. It can be found that the torque is mainly contributed by the dominant harmonics in rotor-PM field and armature reaction field with the same order and rotating speed, i.e., 10, 14, and 34 pole pairs. In addition, a comprehensive comparison of modulation principles between the RPM-FS and SPM-FS machines is conducted from three perspectives, namely PM field, armature reaction field, and torque production mechanism. It is found that the modulation principle not only reveals the similarities of operation principle between two PM-FS machines, but also provides guidance for the combination of stator slots and rotor poles. The parallel three-phase grid-connected converters sharing dc and ac bus can increase the system power level effectively. However, the circulating current will occur inevitably. The existing studies primarily focus on dc, fundamental, and low-frequency circulating current. The high-frequency circulating current (HFCC) caused by asynchronous carriers is studied emphatically in this paper, which is based on the analysis of the change of circulating current in one control cycle. A novel method to suppress HFCC caused by asynchronous carriers of modules is proposed. In this method, the carrier period of slave module is adjustable and the carrier period of the master module is constant. When a large phase shift between modules occurs, an adjusting cycle is inserted to carrier of slave module to realize resynchronizing with master module. It is noted that there is no other commutation between the two modules (expect the dq current reference), such as the carrier information. This paper proposes a double modulation wave carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) strategy for the three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter. This modulation strategy not only overcomes one of the main problems of the NPC inverter, which is the low-frequency voltage oscillation on the neutral point, but also reduces the common-mode voltage (CMV) generated by the inverter. Through the rigorous theoretical derivation, the unified duty cycles of each phase are derived, and the double modulation waves can be easily obtained according to different optimization objectives. However, in the previous double wave CBPWM work, the modulation strategy could not reduce the CMV, whose amplitude is still the same as that of the conventional CBPWM strategy. By rearranging the switching sequence, the vectors corresponding to the large CMV amplitude have been eliminated, and the amplitude of CMV can be reduced by half. Considering the occurrence of neutral-point voltage perturbations, a voltage controller is adopted to recover from the imbalance. The asymmetrical modulation strategy is widely used in various types of three-level (TL) dc/dc converters, while the current imbalance among the power switches is one of the important issues. In this paper, a novel periodically swapping modulation (PSM) strategy is proposed for balancing the power switches’ currents in various types of TL dc/dc converters. In the proposed PSM strategy, the driving signals of the switch pairs are swapped periodically, which guarantees that the currents through the power switches are kept balanced in every two switching periods. Therefore, the proposed PSM strategy can effectively improve the reliability of the converter by balancing the power losses and thermal stresses among the power switches. The operation principle and performances of the proposed PSM strategy are analyzed in detail. In high-voltage dc–dc applications, the switches in the conventional two-level dual active bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter have to bear the whole port voltage, so high voltage switches should be selected. The voltage stress of the switches in the three-level DAB converter can be reduced to half of the port voltage, so it is suitable for high-voltage applications. However, part of the switches still has to bear the entire port voltage under some operation conditions with the single phase-shifted (SPS) modulation strategy. A dual phase-shifted (DPS) modulation strategy is proposed for the converter, compared with SPS modulation strategy, it expands regulating range of transmission power and enhances control flexibility. Moreover, a control algorithm can be developed to ensure that the voltage stress of each switch is half of the port voltage. The detailed operation principle of the three-level DAB converter with DPS control is analyzed in the paper. The characteristics of each operation region and the critical conditions between different operating regions are derived. This paper presents hybrid automaton modeling, comparative model validation, and formal verification of stability through reachability analysis of pulse width modulation (PWM) dc–dc converters. Conformance degree provides a measure of closeness between the proposed hybrid automata models and experimental data. Nondeterminism due to variations in circuit parameters is modeled using interval matrices. In direct contrast to the unsound and computationally-intensive Monte Carlo simulation, reachability analysis is introduced to overapproximate the set of reachable states and ensure stable operation of PWM dc–dc converters. Using a 200 W experimental prototype of a buck converter, hybrid automata models of open-loop, and hysteresis-controlled converters are first validated against experimental data using their conformance degrees. This paper proposes a general field modulation theory for electrical machines by introducing magnetomotive force modulation operator to characterize the influence of short-circuited coil, variable reluctance, and flux guide on the primitive magnetizing magnetomotive force distribution established by field winding function multiplied by field current along the airgap peripheral. Magnetically anisotropic stator and rotor behave like modulators to produce a spectrum of field harmonics and the armature winding plays the role of a spatial filter to extract effective field harmonics to contribute the corresponding flux linkage and induce the electromotive force. The developed field modulation theory not only unifies the principle analysis of a large variety of electrical machines, including conventional dc machine, induction machine, and synchronous machine which are just special cases of the general field modulated machines, thus eliminating the problem of the machine theory fragmentation, but also provides a powerful guidance for inventing new machine topologies. A zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) is typically generated among the multiparallel converters that share the common dc link and ac side without isolated transformers under the space vector modulation (SVM), due to the injected third-order zero-sequence voltage (ZSV). This paper analyzes SVM techniques, studies the effects of the ZSV on the ZSCC control loop in detail, and then proposes an improved SVM scheme to suppress the impact of the ZSV on the ZSCC. The proposed strategy can effectively realize the ZSCC suppression, even though the parallel converter modules have asymmetrical current references and filter inductances. This paper presents a new high-frequency modulation method for multilevel converters. The proposed method provides a broad linear operating range and can be digitally implemented with minimal computational effort. This modulation method creates a phase voltage composed of a rectangular component superimposed on the top of a quasi-square-shaped reference function. The reference functions are defined such that the utilization of the dc-link voltage is maximized in any modulation index, while the dv/dt of the switches is always the minimum possible value. In order to implement the proposed method, an update time that is much shorter than the fundamental period is defined in the algorithm for updating the rectangular components of the reference voltage. The high-frequency rectangular component can then be imposed on the reference function to generate the final switching function by switching between two voltage levels during the time between two update instances. Leakage current reduction of the single-phase transformerless cascaded H-bridge PV inverter is investigated in this paper. The high-frequency common-mode loop model of a typical single-phase cascaded H-bridge PV system is established. Based on the model, the main factors that affect the leakage current are discussed. The reason why the typical single-phase cascaded H-bridge inverter fails to reduce the leakage current is explained. In order to solve the problem, a cascaded topology based on the H5 inverter is presented, along with a new modulation strategy, which can ensure that the stray capacitor voltage is free of high-frequency components. In this way, the leakage current can be effectively reduced. Finally, a prototype with TMS320F28335DSP + XC3S400FPGA digital control is built. In this paper, a control method based on the derivative of power is introduced for single-stage single-phase grid-connected cascaded H-bridge (CHB) photovoltaic inverters. The proposed scheme uses solar arrays derivative of power with respect to current to track maximum power point of each array individually. Using this method along with hybrid modulation technique allows utilization of CHB cells up to their full potential. The control system has a simple structure, and is inherently able to stabilize the system under heavy mismatching conditions where the modulation index goes higher than unity. Space vector modulation (SVM) control of multilevel inverters (MLIs) is very popular. However, it gets extremely challenging with the increase in the number of output voltage levels due to the emergence of subtriangles in the various sectors of the hexagon, which results in increased computational complexity and storage requirements of switching states and corresponding pulse durations. Currently, this is handled through laborios offline computations in conjunction with the visual inspection of the space vector hexagon and its various sectors. This paper aims to simplify the implementation of the SVM scheme for an n-level MLI by proposing generalized equations that not only facilitate direct online computation of control pulses and obviate the requirement of lookup tables but also result in optimized switching. Yet, the on-time computations of the various MLI switches are still based on simple two-dimensional Cartesian co-ordinate system combined with the basic two-level inverter implementation. The proposed scheme makes use of a unique l-factor approach, which directly identifies the location of the various subtriangles in the space vector hexagon and leads to direct online computations of the control pulses. In high-power traction drive systems, the switching frequency of the inverter is strictly limited owing to the restrictions on switching losses and cooling conditions. In this case, the multimode modulation strategy is usually adopted. Based on the analysis of a modified 24-sector space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique, several synchronous modulation strategies with different pulse numbers are proposed in this paper, which can be applied to the two-level six-phase voltage-inverter-fed asymmetrical dual-stator induction machines. By comparing the harmonic performance of the synchronized modulations, the authors present a set of multimode SVPWM strategy, which is suitable for the high-power traction drive systems under low switching frequency. At the same time, the switching strategy for transitions between different modulation modes is proposed as well. Simulation and experimental results verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed synchronized modulation strategies and the switching strategy between different modulation modes. Multilevel converters have received more attention recently. Multilevel converters can be used not only in high-voltage high-power applications, but also in energy storage systems, thanks to reduced harmonics and electromagnetic interferences. State-of-charge (SoC) balancing of the storage system cells within cascaded multilevel inverters, e.g., batteries, can be one of the challenges in practical applications. Different methods have been studied and reported in technical literature. However, the SoC balancing is still a challenging issue. In this paper, a new method is proposed to solve this problem by applying several clever but simple changes to the staircase modulation switching scheme without changing the output waveform properties. Validations for this simple method were performed through simulation and experimental prototype. To improve the reliability of the matrix converter (MC), a fault diagnosis method to identify a single open-switch fault is proposed in this paper. The introduced fault diagnosis method is based on finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC), which employs a time-discrete model of the MC topology and a cost function to select the best switching state for the next sampling period. The proposed fault diagnosis method is realized by monitoring the load currents and judging the switching state to locate the faulty switch. Compared to the conventional modulation strategies such as carrier-based modulation method, indirect space vector modulation, and optimum Alesina–Venturini, the FCS-MPC has known and unchanged switching state in a sampling period. It is simpler to diagnose the exact location of the open switch in MC with FCS-MPC. To achieve better quality of the output current under single open-switch fault conditions without any redundant hardware, a fault tolerant strategy based on predictive control is also studied. The fault tolerant strategy is to select the most appropriate switching state associated with the remaining normal switches of the MC. Phase-shifted carrier modulation is an industry standard in its application to multilevel H-bridge converters. The major advantage of this scheme over level-shifted and space vector modulation schemes is its inherent ability to evenly distribute losses between semiconductor devices. However, phase-shifted schemes suffer from harmonic degradation when operated at the low carrier frequencies required in high-power high-level number applications. This paper develops a model predictive modulation (MPM) scheme that achieves superior harmonic performance, compared to phase-shifted modulation, while ensuring equal semiconductor loss distribution. With respect to complete-enumeration-based predictive techniques, the proposed modulation significantly reduces the number of times the system cost function is evaluated. Reducing the number of calculations by several orders of magnitude ensures computational feasibility. Open-ended winding induction machines fed from standard two-level voltage source inverters (VSIs) provide an attractive arrangement for ac drives. An alternative approach is to use a dual-output indirect matrix converter (IMC). It is well known that the IMC provides fully bidirectional power flow operation, with small input size filter requirements. While a standard IMC consists of an ac–dc matrix converter (MC) input stage followed by a single VSI output stage, it is possible to replicate the VSI to produce multiple outputs. In this paper, an open-end winding induction machine fed by an IMC with two output stages is presented. The IMC modulation strategy aims to reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV), while compensating any zero-sequence voltage fed to the machine. This paper proposes a dual-output boost resonant full-bridge topology to provide a multiple-output converter with improved performance while keeping a cost-effective performance. Power-hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) simulations are used to test power hardware with the help of computer-based real-time simulations. Generally, buck-based power amplifiers that have good dynamic performance are used to construct a PHIL simulator because of their linear large signal control-to-output characteristics. However, their output voltage peak is limited to the applied dc input in the linear region of modulation. In this paper, a differential boost converter (DBC)-based power amplifier is proposed for PHIL simulations, which does not suffer from the aforementioned limitations of a buck-based amplifier. A conventional DBC exhibits highly nonlinear control-to-output behavior. A feedback linearization technique is used to linearize the DBC in a large signal and dynamic sense, which makes it suitable for PHIL applications. Using this power amplifier and a MATLAB/Simulink toolbox for real-time simulations, the PHIL simulator is constructed. Experimental results under various operating conditions of source voltages, such as unipolar, bipolar, transients in frequency, and the dc step, and various load conditions, such as reactive, nonlinear, and transient faults, are provided to confirm the efficacy of the proposed PHIL simulator. The installation of a condition monitoring system (CMS) aims to reduce the operating costs of the monitored system by applying a predictive maintenance strategy. However, a system-driven configuration of the CMS requires the knowledge of the system kinematics and could induce a lot of false alarms because of predefined thresholds. The purpose of this paper is to propose a complete data-driven method to automatically generate system health indicators without any a priori on the monitored system or the acquired signals. This method is composed of two steps. First, every acquired signal is analyzed: the spectral peaks are detected and then grouped in a more complex structure as harmonic series or modulation sidebands. Then, a time-frequency tracking operation is applied on all available signals: the spectral peaks and the spectral structures are tracked over time and grouped in trajectories, which will be used to generate the system health indicators. The proposed method is tested on real-world signals coming from a wind turbine test rig. The detection of a harmonic series and a modulation sideband reports the birth of a fault on the main bearing inner ring. This paper proposes a novel duty ratio modulated direct torque control (DDTC) to concurrently reduce torque ripple and stator flux ripple that are typically associated with conventional direct torque control (DTC). Three different methods of duty ratio determination are presented to achieve various control objectives, namely DDTC-final, DDTC-mean and DDTC-rms. Additionally, adjustable error weight coefficients are introduced to balance the torque ripple reduction and stator flux ripple reduction. Experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of proposed DDTC. Furthermore, the comparative evaluation of proposed DDTC, conventional DDTC and DTC is conducted on the basis of several criteria to verify the superiority of proposed DDTC. Availability of more number of levels for the same number of switching devices has made asymmetrical topologies superior over symmetrical structures. While the 16 : 4 : 1 configuration is reported as an optimal asymmetry, a detailed performance is not available in literature. This paper presents the performance and control of the 16 : 4 : 1 asymmetrical topology. A new analytical approach is introduced to find the complete information of the available combination of space vectors for any asymmetric ratio. A limit chart is introduced, which represents the number of ways to generate a particular space vector. Asymmetrical hexagonal decomposition technique is used to select the switching devices from the high-, medium-, and low-voltage cells to realize a space vector. Common-mode voltage (CMV) is one of the most important issues for the power electronics inverters. An interesting space vector modulation of the three-leg current-source inverter has been reported for the CMV reduction recently. However, it has the disadvantages of the bipolar current pulses and modulation index range limitation. In order to solve these problems, a four-leg current-source inverter with a new space vector modulation is proposed in this paper. With the proposed method, the system CMV can be significantly reduced without bipolar current pulses and modulation index range limitation. Analytical closed-form expressions for harmonic distortion factors corresponding to various pulsewidth modulation (PWM) techniques for a two-level inverter have been reported in the literature. This paper derives such analytical closed-form expressions, pertaining to centered space-vector PWM (CSVPWM) and eight different advanced bus-clamping PWM (ABCPWM) schemes, for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter. These ABCPWM schemes switch each phase at twice the nominal switching frequency in certain intervals of the line cycle while clamping each phase to one of the dc terminals over certain other intervals. The harmonic spectra of the output voltages, corresponding to the eight ABCPWM schemes, are studied and compared experimentally with that of CSVPWM over the entire modulation range. The measured values of weighted total harmonic distortion (WTHD) of the line voltage \bf V\bf WTHD are used to validate the analytical closed-form expressions derived. The analytical expressions, pertaining to two of the ABCPWM methods, are also validated by measuring the total harmonic distortion (THD) in the line current \bf I\bf THD on a 2.2-kW constant volts-per-hertz induction motor drive. The widespread use of electric drives has led to an increasing interest in their condition monitoring and fault diagnostics. With respect to power-switch open-circuit fault diagnosis, the majority of the proposed voltage-based approaches require additional hardware, increasing the system cost. As a result, industry acceptance may be low. This paper proposes a new voltage-based approach—without additional sensors—for open-circuit fault diagnosis in closed-loop controlled pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) ac voltage source converters, by using the information contained in the reference voltages available from the control system. The robustness against false alarms of the proposed technique is improved by employing a voltage observer, in order to estimate the actual converter voltages. It has been proven that the algorithm is insensitive to parameter errors; thus, its effectiveness is not compromised. In order to assess the applicability of the diagnostic technique, it is integrated into the control system of a permanent-magnet-synchronous-machine drive, with regenerative capabilities, together with three of the most widely used PWM control strategies: hysteresis current control, direct torque control, and space vector modulation.
