This paper presents a unified second-stage LC filter applied in the three-state switching cell buck–boost converter, which provides current and voltage with low ripple and low noise. The unified second-stage filter promotes a reduction in the number of devices while maintaining the filtering performance of the converter, with second-stage LC filters at the input and at the output. Moreover, the unified filter, when associated with a three-state switching cell buck–boost converter, allows a size reduction of filter devices, especially for designs with duty cycle range around 1/2. Furthermore, the unified filter arrangement provides nondissipative clamping of switching devices and reduce the system order when compared to the converter with second-stage LC filters. In this paper, the static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed converter in continuous conduction mode (CCM) are reported. Experimental data were obtained from a laboratory prototype with an input range of 32 $\sim$ 72 V, constant output of 48 V, a load of 150 W, and switching frequency of 45 kHz. The measured efficiency for the rated load was 97% for maximum input voltage. This paper introduces a novel single-phase buck–boost noninverting variable-frequency ac–ac converter that offers higher efficiency compared to the competitors. This converter utilizes a lower number of semiconductors. A simple and flexible switching strategy is also proposed, which generates the desired output waveform avoiding unnecessary high-frequency switching operation of semiconductor devices. A high reliable operation due to the elimination of the input source shoot-through risk, an inherent commutation capability that mitigates the voltage spikes across the semiconductors, a lower semiconductors rating requirement, an improved input current waveform quality, and a smaller required input filter inductor are the main advantages of the proposed converter. Thus, the proposed converter can be successfully applied to many industrial applications such as medium-frequency transformer isolation for traction and wind turbine converters, ac–dc high-voltage conversion based on Cockcroft–Walton circuit and induction heating systems. In photovoltaic systems, dc–dc converters have been identified as one of the most critical and challenging subsystem in terms of failure rate. Thus, this paper proposes fault-tolerant operation of a two-stage buck/buck–boost converter under open-circuit switch failure. Remedial actions are efficient in any failure of one of the two switches of the converter. Here, a new unified approach is considered, for the overall fault-tolerant operation of the two stages of the converter. The fault-tolerant circuit we propose lies on performing redundancy by implementing the equivalent synchronous switch for the two main switches of the two stages, in offline mode. The fault-tolerant circuit results from the basic two-stage buck/buck-boost converter and its equivalent circuit with a synchronous switch, merged together to form the new dc–dc fault-tolerant circuit. Therefore, postfault operation at full power can also be performed. By using a switch fault management unit with reduced complexity, inserted between the control block and the switches, we have designed an unified, efficient, and optimized fault-tolerant control, suitable in both healthy and postfault operations. A novel single-stage series-resonant buck-boost inverter (SRBBI) is proposed in this paper. The main attribute of the novel inverter topology is the fact that it generates an ac output voltage larger or lower than the dc input one, depending on the instantaneous duty cycle. This property is not found in the classical voltage-source inverter, which produces an ac output instantaneous voltage which always lower than the dc input voltage. The state-space averaging approach is used to estimate and examine the steady-state and dynamic character of the new single-stage SRBBI. The principle of operation, theoretical analysis, and experimental results of the proposed inverter, rated 500 W and operating at 40 kHz, are provided in this paper to verify the performance of the SRBBI. This paper proposes a new topology for an enhanced-boost Z-source inverter (ZSI) with combined two Z-impedance networks. By two Z-impedance networks and low shoot-through duty cycle, the proposed inverter produces high output voltage gain. In traditional ZSIs for high boosting voltage, a low modulation index is required; hence, under these conditions, the output voltage will have low quality with high total harmonic distortion. Compared with the conventional high-boost ZSI topologies, the proposed inverter uses shorter shoot-through duration and a larger modulation index to improve the output waveform quality. Comparison between the proposed topology and previously proposed schemes, in terms of inductor numbers, voltage and current stresses on elements, sizes of inductors and capacitors, efficiency, and switching device product (SDP) factors of diodes, is made, and the results verify the priority of the proposed topology. The voltage range of a renewable energy source, such as the photovoltaic cell, is influenced by the environment, light, temperature, and so on. The power conditioning system should adapt to the wide input voltage and have buck–boost ability. Based on the structure of the “ac/ac unit,” this paper presents a novel active buck–boost inverter (ABI) topology suitable for wide-range input, which can realize buck–boost conversion in a quasi-single-stage inverter. The ac/ac unit composed of active switches is utilized to perform voltage boost without introducing additional passive elements, which is in favor to the system power density and efficiency. Operational analysis in buck and boost modes are presented, and the modulation strategy applied in the ABI is also developed. This paper presents new five-level current-source inverters (CSIs) with voltage/current buck-boost capability, unlike existing five-level CSIs where only voltage-boost operation is supported. The proposed inverters attain self-inductive-current-balancing per switching cycle at their dc front ends without having to include additional balancing hardware or complex control manipulation. The inverters can conveniently be controlled by using the well-established phase-shifted carrier modulation scheme with only two additional linear references and a mapping logic table needed. Existing modulators can therefore be conveniently retrofitted for controlling the presented inverters. By appropriately coordinating the inverter gating signals, their implementations can be realized by using the least number of components without degrading performance. This paper presents the modeling and design of a closed-loop controller for a Z-source inverter. The Z-source inverter is a recently proposed single-stage power converter, and it is capable of operating in both buck and boost modes. Hence, this inverter gives an economical solution for power conversion in distributed generation (DG) applications, particularly by eliminating the need for a two-stage conversion. Moreover, applications such as DG demand quality output waveforms, and additionally, when the system is subjected to input- and load-side disturbances, their effects need to be minimized. This can be achieved with closed-loop controlling. Toward this end, the system is modeled first with large- and small-signal modeling techniques, and relevant transfer functions are derived. The dc-side of the Z-source inverter shows a non-minimum-phase characteristic, and the output voltage of a Z-source impedance network shows a significant overshoot and undershoot, following a step change in the input due to energy resettling. These effects could be transferred to the ac-side, giving rise to the undershoot and overshoot in the ac output as well. Hence, the proposed controllers should be able to minimize such effects. The ac- and dc-sides are considered separately when designing the controllers. An indirect controller is employed in the dc-side, whereas the ac-side controller is designed in the synchronous reference frame. The modulation index, shoot-through time, and saturation levels are appropriately selected so that the dc-side effects are prevented from propagating into the ac-side. The simulation results are obtained using a state-space-averaged inverter model, and an experimental prototype is built in a laboratory to prove the efficacy of the proposed algorithm. This paper presents a new current programmed control (CPC) technique for a cascaded two-switch buck-boost converter suitable as a low-cost power factor correction (PFC) rectifier in a variable speed motor drive. This new CPC technique, which is an extension of the conventional CPC method, enables the variable output dc voltage, and is therefore suitable in a pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) motor drive or as a universal input-power supply. The CPC method is very simple and requires only a constant-current reference without any changes in the transition between boost and buck operating mode, and the line current is practically unaffected by the topology-mode shift. Simulations and experimental results verify the presented control technique. Compliance with IEC-61000-3-2 class A is achieved. The experimental setup is based on a commercial CPC integrated circuit (IC) for dc-dc converters. This new control technique enables a simple low-cost control circuit for the two-switch buck-boost converter, which complies with IEC-61000-3-2, and the PFC circuit has inherent in-rush and overcurrent protection.
