This paper applies finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) for dynamic reactive power compensation using a hybrid active power filter (HAPF). The FCS-MPC uses a model based on LCL-filter equations to predict the system behavior and optimize the control action. In fact, the application of FCS-MPC in grid-connected converters with LCL-Filter is quite recent. This algorithm is a very promising control technique for power electronics converters and its use for reactive power control of hybrid filter has not been reported in the literature yet. This paper uses the FCS-MPC in a multivariable structure along with an adaptive notch filter to damp resonance. The main purpose is to improve the dynamic response of the HAPF. Simulation as well as practical results prove the feasibility of FCS-MPC application in HAPF reactive power control. The dynamic response of the equipment was significantly improved and represents the main contribution of this paper. The development of a high static gain dc–dc converter with the integration of the voltage multiplier cell and the coupled inductors operating with soft switching is presented in this paper. The use of coupled inductors and voltage multiplier techniques allow the operation with low switch voltage and low conduction losses. The switch turn-on commutation occurs with zero current switching due to the presence of the coupled-inductor leakage inductance. The leakage inductance also reduces the reverse recovery current of all diodes. The zero voltage switching at the power switch turn-off is obtained with the inclusion of only a diode and a snubber capacitor per phase, without the use of auxiliary switches. The soft-switching range is independent of the load and is maintained even with a light load. The theoretical analysis, design procedure, and experimental results are presented in this paper. A two-phase boost converter with one voltage multiplier and coupling inductors was built with an input voltage $V_{{\text{in}}}= { \text{24 V}}, output voltage Vo= { \text{432 V}}, and output power Po= { \text{400 W}}. Small power home appliances (refrigerator compressor motor drives) demand ever better efficiency at moderate initial cost. An efficiency of 85% has been already reached at 100 W, 2930 r/min, with line-start split-phase capacitor induction motors (IMs). To boost performance, the present paper models and analyses a split-capacitor IM with regular rotor cage plus two flux barriers filled with permanent magnets to also exploit the reluctance of such torque for 100 W, 3000 r/min and, thus, raise efficiency to 90% for a 4.22-kg motor. The present paper introduces a circuit model for asynchronous operation; a magnetic nonlinear equivalent circuit model to assess synchronous magnetization inductances \rmL{\rm{dm}} , \rmL{\rm{qm}}; a circuit dq model in rotor coordinates for transients; and finite element method (FEM) validation of \rmL{\rm{dm}} and \rmL{\rm{qm}} to fully model the machine and offer digital simulation for the case study. Then, an optimal design methodology based on the modified Hooke–Jeeves algorithm and a multicriterion objective (cost) function that includes machine materials + capacitor + energy loss capitalized cost, as well as penalties for starting torque, synchronizing torque, and power un-realization, is unfolded and applied for same 100 W, 3000 r/min case study. In this paper, a nonisolated dc–dc converter with high voltage gain is presented. Three diodes, three capacitors, an inductor, and a coupled inductor are employed in the presented converter. Since the inductor is connected to the input, the low input current ripple is achieved, which is important for tracking maximum power point of photovoltaic panels. The voltage stress across switch S is clamped by diode D 1 and capacitor C1. Therefore, a main switch with low on-resistance RDS (on) can be employed to reduce the conduction loss. Besides, the main switch is turned on under zero current. This reduces the switching loss. The steady-state analysis of the proposed converter is discussed in this paper. This paper presents three unidirectional step-up ac–dc converter topologies with voltage multiplication on their outputs. The first topology is the hybrid boost rectifier and the other two are novel bridgeless structures, all based on the integration of boost rectifier and the ladder switched-capacitor (SC) cell. The new hybrid structures provide high voltage gain with low voltage stress across the switches, high-power factor, and output voltage regulation. This paper presents the principle of operation, steady-state and dynamic analysis, design methodology, and experimental verification. A different approach is also presented for the design methodology of the SC cell and for the analysis of its influence on the dynamic model. Three 1000-W prototypes with a 220-V input voltage, 800-V output voltage, and 100-kHz switching frequency were designed to corroborate the theoretical study. The best efficiency was 97.1$\%$ in the proposed bridgeless versions and the voltage stress across the switches stands around 400 V. This paper presents a method for small-signal dynamic studies of power systems including utility-scale PV energy systems considering the effects of dc-side components. Existing methods commonly model a PV energy system as a dc source connected to a grid-tied inverter. This paper shows that the dc components of a PV energy system can also contribute in the dynamics of the power system in the range of small-signal studies. The paper first develops the model of a PV energy system by merging the submodels of dc- and ac-side components. Then, a method to obtain the augmented model of the power system including a PV energy system will be explained using a study system. The study system consists of a PV energy system in parallel with a synchronous generator connected to a grid. Then, based on eigenvalue analysis, verified by time-domain simulations, it is shown that the dc-link capacitor, front-end converter, and its controller can introduce oscillatory modes in subsynchronous range of frequencies. This paper proposes an analytical design procedure for the LLCL and the LCCL filters for grid integration of high-power voltage-source converters. The low switching frequency and stringent limits on grid-injected harmonics in high-power applications lead to large smoothing filters. In order to reduce the size and weight, high-order filters are already proposed and wise design procedures with the main goal of minimizing the overall filter size are being suggested. In this paper, the parameters of the LLCL and the LCCL filters are designed in the per-unit system to satisfy the requirements on the injected grid current and at the same time minimize the overall filter size through minimizing the total energy stored in the filter components. This paper focuses on the operation of a grid-connected modular multilevel converter (MMC) supplying a pulsed dc load. The goal is to achieve minimum ac power fluctuation despite the high power fluctuation present on the dc side. The MMC has been selected for its inherent ability to decouple ac and dc current controllers. However, if no additional provisions are taken, the pulsed load causes imbalance of cell capacitor voltages between upper and lower arms in each phase. This paper presents the theoretical analysis of the imbalance problem and proposes a simple arm-balancing controller to enable the operation of the converter under pulsed dc load. This paper proposes a wide-range zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) active-clamped current-fed push–pull converter for fuel cell application. The presented converter achieves ZVS for all of the primary switches and ZCS for secondary diodes from rated load to 10% full load over the wide input voltage variation, improving the overall efficiency. The ZVS of switches is realized by the energy stored in the transformer leakage inductance aided by the secondary parallel inductor. An additional active clamping circuit suppresses the voltage spike as well as assists in realizing ZVS of switches. Low-voltage-rated switches with low on-state resistance can be used. Moreover, the voltage-doubler rectifier is adopted to release the reverse-recovery problem of rectifier diodes and reduce turns ratio of the high-frequency transformer. This paper describes a silicon carbide pulse width modulation (PWM) signal generator in the 1.2 μm HiTSiC CMOS process developed by Raytheon Systems Ltd. The design features a 6-b binary input, which allows for setting a system's duty cycle. The results presented in this paper utilize a field programmable gate array board in the test setup to dynamically set the duty cycle by controlling each bit. A control current is also available to give the user added flexibility for tuning the duty cycle. Experimental results show the duty cycle range of the PWM generator to be between 4.7% and 95.2% at 400 °C. Sustained operation of the circuit is demonstrated over a period of 50 h at 300 °C. The series-resonant converter (SRC) has been used in several application and it recently became popular for smart transformers (STs). In this application, the efficiency and reliability are of paramount importance. Although many papers have addressed the design challenges to improve the converter efficiency, discussions about the reliability are still missing in the literature. In this context, this paper presents a design procedure focusing on the efficiency and reliability improvement of the SRC for ST application. High efficiency is achieved through the use of silicon-carbide MOSFETs, reducing conduction and switching losses, and the detail design procedure based on accurate losses modeling. High reliability is achieved through a fault-tolerant topology and reliability-oriented design of the resonant circuit passive components. In this paper, two topologies are presented for the enhanced-boost quasi-Z-source inverters (qZSI), namely continuous input current configuration and discontinuous input current configuration of enhanced-boost qZSI with two-switched impedance networks. Similar to enhanced-boost impedance-source inverters (ZSIs), these proposed inverter topologies possess very high boost voltage inversion at low shoot-through duty ratio and high modulation index to provide an improved quality output voltage. Compared to enhanced-boost ZSIs with two-switched Z-source impedance networks, these proposed inverter topologies share common ground with source and bridge inverter, overcome the starting inrush problem, and draw continuous input current and the lower voltage across the capacitors. This paper proposes a family of soft-switching bidirectional converters. In many applications, the bidirectional converters operate over a wide range of duty cycle and load variations. In the proposed converters, in order to extend the zero-voltage switching operation range, two supplemental voltage sources utilizing passive components are implemented in the auxiliary circuit. By using this method, the soft-switching features are ensured for an extensive range of the converter duty cycles. This is achieved independent of the output power value or the converter operation mode, and so, soft switching is ensured within the entire converter operating region. In these converters, all semiconductors components are soft switched, and the auxiliary circuit does not contribute to the complexity of the control circuit. Also, no extra voltage stress exists on the main switches and the voltage stress on the auxiliary switches is lower than the main switches voltage stress. A single-phase common-mode transformerless grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) converter, which is based on the integration of two stages, is proposed in this paper. Transformer elimination in grid-connected PV systems has many advantages. It not only reduces cost, size, and weight but also increases the complete system efficiency. Since there is no galvanic isolation between grid and PV array, a leakage current may appear due to the PV parasitic capacitance to the ground, if this is not taken into account in the converter design. This paper presents a dc/dc boost converter integrated with a full-bridge inverter. The integration of these two stages reduces the ground leakage current. The neutral line of the grid is directly connected to the negative terminal of the PV array, eliminating any possibility of leakage current in this terminal. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been one of the most popular candidates in high-voltage applications. However, reliability is a critical issue due to a large number of power switching devices and capacitors applied in the MMC. To improve the reliability of the MMC, a fast and reliable diagnosis strategy for the open-circuit fault is proposed in this paper, where submodule voltage sensors are relocated to the upper switching device. Furthermore, a voltage observer based on the submodule voltage sensor is established to monitor the capacitor and realize the power control of the MMC under normal operation. A Boolean logic operation based fault indicator is put forward based on the relationship of the operation state and binaried output of voltage sensors, which could detect and locate the open-circuit faults of the MMC very fast. The ratio of the increment of the observed and measured capacitor voltage during the period of positive arm current is applied to monitor the capacitor. Current flow controllers (CFCs) are power electronics-based devices that may remove some technical barriers preventing multiterminal high-voltage direct current (MTdc) grid deployment. In this paper, an interline CFC topology is investigated. The single H-bridge CFC (1B-CFC) alters the grid power flow by transferring power between neighboring dc lines. The operation and control of a 1B-CFC under a single modulation scheme is presented. A control strategy has been proposed to provide pole balancing support during imbalance conditions. Small-scale prototypes have been developed to demonstrate the functionality and operational range of the device. To this end, an experimental MTdc grid test-rig has been employed. It is shown that a 1B-CFC could be used to limit the dc line current and, additionally, it can be employed to enable asymmetrical tapping of dc lines. This paper introduces the bridgeless triple-mode resonant ac–dc converter and presents its dynamic model and control technique. The proposed converter operates in triple mode: discontinuous-conduction mode (DCM), continuous-conduction mode (CCM), and missing resonance mode (MRM). It has the advantages of small number of required components, medium power capacity, and high efficiency, but it is difficult to control because DCM, CCM, and MRM have their own dynamic characteristics. To solve this control problem, the mode boundaries are first identified and, corresponding to each mode, the dynamic model is developed to design the controller. In each mode, we propose to add a repetitive controller (RC) with a phase-lead compensator to the conventional duty ratio plus feedback controller. The RC is used to suppress the deterministic periodic disturbances and the phase-lead compensator is used to compensate for the incurred phase lag. This paper introduces a single-phase five-branch direct ac–ac modular multilevel converter (MMC) with the capability of equal frequency conversion for railway power conditioning applications. By analyzing the branch energy balance mechanism, the basic operating principle of the proposed MMC is clarified and the control strategy is also proposed. Comparisons between the proposed MMC and the traditional modular multilevel matrix converter (MMMC) on branch voltage and current ratings as well as capacitor dimension requirements are also presented. The effectiveness of the proposed topology and the control strategy is validated on a down-scaled prototype. Both the theoretical analyses and the experimental results reveal that for compensating low power factor traction loads in Scott transformer-based railway power systems, the proposed MMC has decreased branch current stresses and capacitor voltage fluctuations compared to the traditional MMMC, and the required total submodule numbers of these two MMCs are comparable. In this paper, we propose a 3-level double conversion uninterruptible power supply with a new cooperative and dynamically weighted model predictive control technique. A 3-level dc–dc converter is used to improve the dc bus balance and the overall response of the uninterruptible power supply (UPS). A new cooperative model predictive control principle is proposed to enhance the response of multiconverter systems. New controllers are proposed for all converters of the UPS, based on the dynamically weighted model predictive control technique and using the presented cooperative principle. A new power management technique is also proposed for the UPS. The proposed 3-level UPS system presents improved dynamic response and steady-state performance in distinct operating points, when compared to the conventional system. A soft-switched nonisolated high step-up dc–dc converter based on the quasi-impedance-source structure is presented in this paper. In the proposed converter, a technique similar to the synchronous rectifier is applied such that the diode of the impedance network is replaced with an active switch. In this way, not only is conduction loss associated with the diode reduced but also zero-voltage-switching characteristics for power switches are provided. Also, output diodes of the proposed converter are switched under zero-voltage-zero-current-switching condition which extremely reduces their switching and reverse-recovery losses. It is shown that by correct design of the components, soft-switching performance is retained for all the semiconductor devices over the entire range of output load. All these factors together with simplicity of the proposed structure result in high efficiency over a wide range of output power. Moreover, the proposed converter benefits from continuous input current and a shared ground between input and output. Applying series configuration of the insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) to the pulsed power supplies offers unique features such as compactness and long life time. In the high-voltage pulsed power supplies, a large number of the IGBTs are required to be serially connected. Hence, the safe operating condition provision for the series IGBTs is an important and crucial issue. The effect of the voltage unbalancing factors becomes remarkable when the number of switches in the series structure increases. There are passive and active methods to balance the voltage of the series IGBTs. In both of these methods, an amount of power must be dissipated to remove the effect of the voltage unbalancing factors. Consequently, the power loss is considerable when a large number of series devices are necessary. This paper proposes an effective power recovery system that recovers the power associated with the series stacking of the IGBTs. Using this proposal, the efficiency of the resulted series switch enhances considerably. The power recovery system can be implemented easily for any number of series IGBTs. It consists of a simple dc–dc converter and several interconnection diodes for power recovery procedure. As a high-efficiency converter for photovoltaic power generation, the integrated boost series resonant (IBSR) converter includes three inductors, two capacitors, and one transformer, which occupy a significant volume. In order to further increase the power density, this paper proposes a novel passive integrated unit with the flexible multilayer foil integration technique for the above six passive components. First of all, the distributed electromagnetic component model of one new flexible three-layer film shows that the distributed parasitic capacitors formed by the insulation film are combined into the resonant capacitance. Then, the configuration of the proposed integrated unit is described in detail, and the electromagnetic analysis is given. Furthermore, the design procedure for the proposed integrated unit is demonstrated. In real applications, it is usually desirable to have a regulated dc output voltage from a wireless power transfer (WPT) system. This voltage regulation is especially necessary because of possible variation in coupling coil relative position and thus a changing mutual inductance. For WPT systems working at megahertz (MHz), Class E rectifiers are known to be advantageous, thanks to their simple configuration and soft-switching operation. In this paper, we propose a new Class-E-based active rectifier. This rectifier is capable to simultaneously perform high-efficiency rectification and output voltage regulation, but without the need to have an additional regulating circuit. Analytical derivations and analysis are provided to explain the operation principle in detail. Guidance is also developed for a balanced design of parameters, which compromises among different criteria. Final experiments validate the analytical analysis and dc output voltage regulation via the active rectifier. With the duty cycle control of the rectifier, a constant output voltage (10 V) can be maintained under a varying mutual inductance coefficient and with more than 92% rectifying efficiency. Three-phase input diode rectifier interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives with small-volume film capacitors have many merits, such as high reliability, high power density, and low cost. However, in regenerative braking mode, the dc link may suffer from overvoltage due to the application of slim film capacitors. In this paper, a novel antiovervoltage strategy is proposed by controlling the motor voltage using stator current vector orientation. The relationship among the braking torque, the dc-link capacitance, and the antiovervoltage ability is analyzed quantitatively. Based on the analysis of principle, a closed-loop antiovervoltage regulation scheme is presented, which is easy for applications. Additionally, this method has the merit of low motor parameter dependence. Meanwhile, the small signal model of the electrolytic capacitorless IPMSM drive is derived for the coefficient design of the voltage controller. This paper proposes an effective sliding mode controller (SMC) for a grid-connected 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) inverter. The aim is to design a simple controller that deals effectively with the complex control problem of the PUC7 inverter (multiobjective control problem). The selection of the control actions is achieved according to the system state error at every sampling time, regardless of the previous values, which makes the control technique model-independent. The control algorithm evaluates online two cost functions (one for each state error), which are derived on the basis of sliding mode theory, and it selects the optimal control input in order to satisfy the reaching conditions of the two cost functions. Compared with the existing solutions, the proposed SMC technique ensures lower average switching frequency by tuning the hysteresis bandwidth of the capacitor-voltage error. The fast implementation, needless of gains tuning, and simple design procedure are the main features of the proposed algorithm. Simulation and experimental results are presented to prove the effectiveness of the proposed technique in controlling the PUC7 inverter with high dynamic performance and robustness against disturbances and parameters mismatch. This paper introduces a novel single-phase buck–boost noninverting variable-frequency ac–ac converter that offers higher efficiency compared to the competitors. This converter utilizes a lower number of semiconductors. A simple and flexible switching strategy is also proposed, which generates the desired output waveform avoiding unnecessary high-frequency switching operation of semiconductor devices. A high reliable operation due to the elimination of the input source shoot-through risk, an inherent commutation capability that mitigates the voltage spikes across the semiconductors, a lower semiconductors rating requirement, an improved input current waveform quality, and a smaller required input filter inductor are the main advantages of the proposed converter. Thus, the proposed converter can be successfully applied to many industrial applications such as medium-frequency transformer isolation for traction and wind turbine converters, ac–dc high-voltage conversion based on Cockcroft–Walton circuit and induction heating systems. This paper proposes a new multilevel inverter (MLI) topology that utilizes trinary sequence for the dc sources. It gives maximum output voltage level with minimum dc source and switch count when compared to other sequences, such as symmetric, natural, binary, and quasi-linear. This is due to the fact that the trinary sequence generates of all additive and subtractive combinations of input dc levels in the output voltage waveform. The concept is implemented on a 9-level asymmetric MLI using only four active devices. Multicarrier unipolar pulsewidth modulation technique is adopted to create the switching pulses. Theoretical calculation of total harmonic distortion in both voltage and current waveforms has been performed using asymptotic time domain formula. In this paper, eight ultrahigh-voltage gain dc–dc converters are proposed. These sets of converters are derived by the association of boost cells, coupled inductor, voltage multiplier, switched capacitors, and LC filter cells. The nonpulsating input and output converters are evaluated in terms of: principle of operation, voltage gain, voltage and current stress, estimated power losses, and efficiency. Squirrel-cage induction motor (SQIM) fed by a pulsewidth modulated voltage source inverter (VSI) is subjected to voltage and current surges. It may cause additional losses in the motor, insulation failure, high bearing current, and electromagnetic interference. To mitigate these problems, sinusoidal LC filter is placed at the ac-side of the VSI. This paper proposes a new methodology to design the filter. In this method, the filter inductance is chosen based on the maximum ripple in the inverter ac-side current and the voltage drop across the filter inductor, and the filter capacitor is chosen based on the steady-state reactive power demand of the SQIM. The effects of the designed filter on the switch current, losses in the drive, temperature of the dc-link capacitor, dv/dt at the motor terminal, stator flux, and air-gap torque of the SQIM are discussed. The performance of the drive with the filters, designed by the proposed method and the standard method, are experimentally tested on a two-level silicon carbide VSI-fed SQIM and comparative analysis is carried out. The impact of the designed filter on the drive is also shown when the neutral point of the filter capacitors is connected with the mid-point of the dc link. A popular variable-frequency control used for point-of-load (POL) converter application is the constant on-time (COT) control. COT control is able to improve light-load efficiency and reduce the amount of output capacitors with high-bandwidth designs, but the transient response of COT control is limited by the fixed on-time nature of the control. In this paper, a state-trajectory-based control with single-cycle transient response is proposed for POL converters. With the proposed control, the converter will follow the natural state trajectory of the converter for the duration of the detected load step-up transient, which can ensure a very fast transient response. Experimental results are presented to not only demonstrate the proposed idea but also the control's ability to further reduce the amount of output capacitors and save board footprint. Multilevel inverters (MLI) with reduced components are becoming popular to achieve higher voltage levels with lower cost and complexities of the circuit. Most of the reduced switch MLIs use a large number of isolated voltage sources that have a large total standing voltage (TSV) and higher losses. Moreover, many reduced component MLIs have been developed to reduce the number of switches only and have not utilized the dc-link voltages properly. Thus, an inverter needs to be designed in which the number of dc sources is also small and utilized fully. In this paper, a novel single-phase, multicell MLI configuration is presented that can generate a maximum number of output voltage levels using a minimum number of switches and dc sources. Two optimal configurations of the proposed MLI are proposed based on the minimum requirements of components with the optimum voltage stress of the highest rated switches. Moreover, the TSV of the proposed optimal MLI also becomes low. A generalized multicell optimum MLI is presented and the number of components, voltage stress of all the switches, and the TSV of the proposed as well as the other inverters also determined by the generalized expressions for comparison purpose. The prototype of a specimen 15-level inverter and the optimal 75-level inverter cell is further developed and implemented using DS 1103 in the laboratory to show the effectiveness of the proposed configuration. In this paper, closed-loop control and boundary condition for continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode of nonisolated inverting N× multilevel boost converter (MBC) are articulated. Inverting N× MBC combines the features of classical boost converter and voltage multiplier to attain inverting N times higher voltage. Consequently, the inverting N× MBC provides a viable solution for high-voltage step-up photovoltaic applications with low voltage rating reactive components and semiconductor devices. The control strategy with saturation limiter is employed to achieve highly stable voltage. The modes of operation, benefits of inverting N× MBC, and key factors for the selection of semiconductor devices and sizing of the reactive components are discussed. Additionally, the effects of reactive components and semiconductor devices on the output voltage are examined. Experimental results of the developed circuit are presented to validate the design of converter, and effectiveness and robustness of the implemented control algorithm for different input and output side perturbations. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are emerging as a promising topology for medium- and high-power applications. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs) are usually employed in MMCs as floating capacitors due to their high volumetric efficiency and low price. AECs gradually deteriorate over time due to electrolyte vaporization, and for this reason, they have been recognized as one of the most fragile components in the converter. As they continue to age, the AEC's capacitance decreases and its equivalent series resistance increases, which can result in an increase of submodule (SM) capacitor voltage ripple, power loss and could damage the operation of the MMC with prolonged use of aged capacitors. To prevent such damage, monitoring the health of capacitors is an important step to enhance the reliability of the MMC by predictive maintenance. This paper presents a failure prediction scheme for SM capacitors in the MMC by monitoring the SM capacitor voltage oscillations. Detailed simulation studies are carried out for a five-level MMC in the PLECS® platform and verified experimentally. The ac-side cascaded H-bridge converter with a two-level (2L) main bridge has previously been proposed as a fault-tolerant converter for high-voltage dc. This paper explores the benefits of replacing the 2L bridge with a neutral point clamped (NPC) three-level bridge for medium voltage dc applications and defines the optimum operating conditions for this case. By modifying the topology to include an NPC main bridge, the peak stack voltage during normal operation is decreased considerably, which results in a 58% reduction in the required number of submodules (SM), thereby significantly increasing efficiency. However, this sacrifices the fault ride-through capability as the stacks are no longer able to support the ac voltage and thus two new SM topologies are proposed. The proposed topologies function as single full-bridges with two capacitors in parallel during normal operation. Under fault conditions, the SMs divide into two series-connected full-bridges to enable dc fault ride-through. Reverse-blocking integrated gate-commutated thyristors or ultra-fast mechanical switches are used to bypass the insulated gate bipolar transistors that are unused in normal operation and therefore the topology maintains a high efficiency. The present paper provides a solution to operate multilevel dual active bridge (ML-DAB) converters built upon neutral point clamped switching legs in a full-bridge disposition and with any number of levels on either side of the converter. The main issue of such converters is addressing the inherent unbalance of the dc-link capacitor voltages, which hinders the proper operation and optimum utilization of the converter. The proposed solution comprises a generalized to N levels modulation and control scheme that allows operating these converters, while guaranteeing the proper balance of the dc-link capacitor voltages. The suitability of the proposed solution is verified through simulation and experimental tests performed in five different converter configurations, three of them with an asymmetric number of voltage levels, proving that capacitor voltage balance is achievable in a wide range of operation conditions. It is of great significance for a voltage source converter (VSC)-based multiterminal dc (MTdc) grid to isolate the dc fault lines within several milliseconds after dc fault. Existing protection schemes and fault analysis methods are mainly based on the numerical simulations, which lack the theoretical analysis. In this paper, a high-frequency (HF) equivalent model of VSC-based MTdc grid that is utilized for initial dc fault current calculation is first proposed. In the proposed model, the parallel connected capacitors of VSCs are regarded as short-circuited, and the initial fault current calculation of the fault dc line and the healthy dc line can be reduced as a simplified RL and RLC circuit. Accordingly, a novel dc fault detection method for VSC-based MTdc system is further proposed. In the proposed approach, the primary detection utilizes the transient average value of line current and the fault dc line can be identified quickly with only one-end information. In addition, the errors between the transient fault current calculation based on the distributed parameter line model and the lumped parameter line model are also evaluated. Numerous simulation studies carried out in PSCAD/EMTdc have demonstrated that the proposed HF equivalent model can be utilized for initial dc fault analysis of VSC-MTdc system and the proposed protection scheme is effective under different fault locations and high fault resistances. Compared with the traditional protection schemes based on rate of change of current, the proposed one requires relatively low sampling frequency and low computation burden, and has high fault resistance tolerance ability and high robustness with respect to the missing data. This paper presents a novel fault-tolerant method for active–neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter using a modified carrier-based pulsewidth modulation. At a fault event, the ANPC inverter is divided into subinverters, and the modulating signal is modified to two modulating signals. The modified modulating signals are used to control the subinverters and allow continuous operation of the three-level ANPC inverter during faulty conditions even up to four open-switch faults per phase. This technique provides the fault-tolerant capability of the ANPC inverter without the need to add any additional phase legs or complex control strategies. Furthermore, the proposed technique ensures the voltage balancing of the dc-link capacitors. The performance of the proposed fault-tolerant technique is verified through simulation studies in MATLAB/Simulink under different faulty conditions. In this paper, a voltage sensorless controller is developed for a two-switch single-phase rectifier that involves power factor correction and active pulsating power buffering without electrolytic capacitors. While a two-switch rectifier normally requires four sensed signals for control, only one current sensor is required in this proposal, thereby offering advantages such as low cost, high compactness, isolation between control and power circuits, and improved reliability. While the basic operating principle follows that of a conventional voltage sensorless controller for single-switch converters, several critical design considerations are the key to the success of the implementation which is explained in detail. In this paper, a new transformerless buck–boost converter based on a ZETA converter is introduced. The proposed converter has the ZETA converter advantages, such as buck–boost capability, input-to-output dc insulation, and continuous output current. The suggested converter voltage gain is higher than the classic ZETA converter. In the presented converter, only one main switch is utilized. The proposed converter offers low voltage stress of the switch; therefore, the low on-state resistance of the main switch can be selected to decrease the losses of the switch. The presented converter topology is simple; hence, the control of the converter is simple. The converter has the continuous output current. This paper proposes an equivalent series resistance (ESR)-based control, namely a circuit-level approach, to efficiently distribute load in battery-ultracapacitors (UC) hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs). The ESR circuit model of an example capacitor semiactive HESS is first built representing the energy losses at both circuit and system levels. The analytical derivations show that the overall energy loss of the HESS solely depends on the ratio of the dynamic load provided by the battery pack to the entire dynamic load. This energy loss is minimized following the load distribution determined by the ratio of the ESR of the battery pack to those of the UC pack and dc–dc converter. An ESR-based real-time control strategy is then developed to minimize the energy loss and regulate UC state-of-charge (SOC) to avoid overcharge/overdischarge. Both the simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed ESR-based control in terms of improvements in energy efficiency, usage of UC pack, and temperature rise reduction in batteries. The ESR-based control achieves a performance close to that using the ideal dynamic programming method. Compared with the battery-alone system, the total energy loss and battery temperature rise in the example HESS are averagely reduced by 44.9% and 51.9%, respectively, under the proposed ESR-based control. The algorithm complexity of model predictive control (MPC) for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) was optimized to a polynomial level in previous studies. However, implementing MPC with conventional approaches still suffers from long execution time, where a low cost digital signal processor (DSP) is used to execute optimization algorithms and a small-sized field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is used to extend gate signals and sampling functions. This paper presents a parallel implementation approach to reduce the execution time of MPC, where the FPGA is configured to be used for accelerating the high-complexity sorting tasks. By running the DSP and FPGA in parallel, the algorithm execution time is only determined by the DSP, and the resource consumption is only determined by the FPGA. To minimize the resource consumption and requirement in FPGA, a parallel comparison-based sorter with multiple comparison and accumulators is proposed. The proposed implementation method can reduce the time and space complexity of the MPC from the polynomial level to a linear level without additional hardware cost, which means the MPC for medium-voltage CHB STATCOMs (e.g., 20 stages) can be implemented online with existing control platforms. Circuit analysis and design criteria of a two-phase bidirectional converter with high voltage gain are presented in this paper. The operating principle of the forward or reverse mode is similar to that of the conventional buck or boost converter. Compared with the conventional converter, the switch stresses can be reduced significantly depending on the operating region of the voltage ratio in the two-phase converter. The power losses can also be reduced due to the use of low-voltage rating switches. The derivate converters are discussed to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed topology. Laminated busbars connect capacitors with switching power modules, and they are designed to have low stray inductance to minimize electromagnetic interference. Attempts to accurately measure the stray inductance of these busbars have not been successful. The challenge lies with the capacitors, as they excite the busbar producing their individual stray inductances. These individual stray inductances cannot be arithmetically averaged to establish the total stray inductance that applies when all the capacitors excite the busbar at the same time. It is also not possible to measure the stray inductance by simultaneous excitation of each capacitor port using impedance analyzers. This paper presents a solution to the above dilemma. A vector synthesis method is proposed, whereby the individual stray inductance from each capacitor port is measured using an impedance analyzer. Each stray inductance is then mapped into an xyz frame with a distinct direction. This mapping exercise allows the data to be vectored. The total stray inductance is then the sum of all the vectors. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on a busbar designed for H-bridge inverters by comparing the simulation and practical results. The absolute error of the total stray inductance between the simulation and the proposed method is 0.48 nH. The double-ended (DE) active-clamp forward (ACF) converter is one of the attractive dc–dc converters for the power supply of digital devices due to a simple structure and zero voltage switching (ZVS) capability of primary switches. However, due to a dc offset current of transformer, the size and core loss of transformer are increased. In this paper, a new DE-ACF converter having an additional switch and a diode is proposed to achieve a low dc offset current of transformer by charging a clamp capacitor additionally during a turn-off interval between main switches. Thus, the transformer size can be reduced in the proposed converter. Furthermore, since the output inductor current ripple is reduced, the primary and secondary conduction losses can be decreased under medium and heavy loads. As a result, the proposed converter can have higher efficiency than conventional DE-ACF converter. In this paper, the design methodology of switched-tank converter (STC) is presented. The power loss breakdown analysis is conducted to point out the directions and paths for components optimization. It is revealed that the switching device conduction loss, printed circuit board (PCB) loss, and inductor loss become significant when output power is >150 W. Power loss of four switches is calculated and compared for switching device selection. The resonant capacitor is carefully designed to meet both current stress and ripple requirements. On the other hand, optimal design of the resonant inductors and PCB layout are fully investigated. The core loss model is provided, and different core materials are compared to minimize the core loss. Besides, a fine-tuned inductor winding structure is designed to achieve the lowest winding loss. Furthermore, PCB layout is optimized to get short loop length for each operation state. In addition to the hardware level optimization, an improved control method is proposed, in which the conduction time of switching devices is tuned to mitigate the circulating power. To verify the optimization work, a prototype of STC is built and tested. For an LLC converter, it is difficult to realize the wide output range with conventional pulse frequency modulation control because of the limited operating frequency. This paper proposes a new hybrid control method. The proposed strategy combines the burst-mode control and phase-shift control methods for the LLC converter. The burst-mode control can regulate the output voltage from zero to its maximum value, and the phase-shift control can reduce the increased resonant current during burst-on time. By using this method, the wide output voltage range is realized with the low resonant current during burst-on time and zero-voltage switch (ZVS) for all switches. The reliability and efficiency of the converter can be improved accordingly. The burst duty ratio is regulated by the reference output voltage, and the phase-shift angle is derived when realizing ZVS for lagging-leg switches. Moreover, the resonant parameters and the maximum phase-shift angle are optimized under the constraints of current stress and ZVS condition. This method is easy to be implemented in a low-cost microcontroller because high-frequency real-time calculations are not necessary. This paper proposes a 20 MHz low-profile dc–dc converter with magnetic-free characteristics based on aircore planar inductors. The switch and diode of the proposed converter operate in soft-switching modes, which significantly reduces the switching loss. Furthermore, the parasitic capacitances are taken as part of corresponding resonant capacitors. A high-performance aircore inductor with a variable width and an optimal connecting angle is analyzed. The optimal parameters design method to achieve minimum winding resistance is derived in detail. The resonant driving method is adopted to reduce driving loss in a high-frequency condition. A multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector generation scheme for variable-speed drive applications with single-dc-link operation requires a large value of capacitance for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) filters, when operated at lower speeds. In existing schemes, the multilevel dodecagonal structure is obtained by cascading a flying capacitor inverter with a CHB. In this paper, a new scheme has been proposed to minimize the capacitance requirement for full speed operation by creating vector redundancies using modular and equal voltage CHBs. Also, an algorithm has been developed to optimize the selection of vector redundancies among the CHBs in order to minimize the voltage ripple of the floating capacitors. The proposed algorithm considers instantaneous capacitor voltages and phase currents for optimal selection of vector redundancies. This paper presents the current control design procedure of a single-phase grid-tied five-level packed U-cell inverter (PUC5) with an LCL output filter. The PUC5 inverter is used as an interface of renewable energy sources, such as solar applications. The LCL filter is calculated according to the grid-tied operation and converter ratings. An optimal controller, based on a linear quadratic regulator with integral action, is designed to inject a sinusoidal current with low harmonic distortion at unity power factor. For that design, the PUC5 inverter is modelled in the D–Q frame. The sensorless voltage control is incorporated into the switching technique to balance the PUC5 capacitor voltage and generate a five-level waveform at the output. Experimental tests are performed on a laboratory benchmark to confirm the theoretical design. The results prove the efficiency and accuracy of the adopted control strategy in a steady state and under transients of grid current, grid inductance, ac and dc voltage amplitudes. For photovoltaic applications, the flyback microinverter with pseudo-dc-link is popular as a simple topology but brings large transformer turns ratio and thus large leakage inductance, which would deteriorate the converter efficiency. To solve this issue, based on the nonisolated pseudo-dc-link structure, this paper proposed a hybrid boost–flyback/flyback (BF/F) microinverter. This new topology is operated at the BF mode for the most segment of a half grid cycle and the F mode for the rest. During the BF mode, high voltage gain with low voltage stress is easily available in minimized transformer turns ratio. Besides, the leakage energy is recycled and the turn-off voltage spike of the main switch is clamped, as a result of a passive snubber inherently contained in this mode. Given that the BF mode is lack of step-down function, the F mode is developed to regulate the output voltage even for values lower than the input voltage. The operation and characteristic of the hybrid BF/F microinverter in boundary conduction mode are analyzed in detail, and the mathematical expression of reference current is derived theoretically to guarantee high power quality.
