With this Special Issue, we are publishing 81 peer-reviewed manuscripts, a selection from the best work presented in June 2019 at the 28th IEEE Symposium on Fusion Engineering (SOFE), Jacksonville, FL, USA. This is the sixth SOFE Special Issue that IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON PLASMA SCIENCE (TPS) has published, a tradition that started with the 2009 SOFE in order to afford attendees the opportunity to publish an expanded version of their oral or poster presentations in a refereed journal. It has become a popular option. With each successive SOFE, more authors take advantage of the possibility offered by TPS to have their conference papers gain wider exposure and be cited by others working in fusion engineering and its related disciplines. Readers benefit as well. For example, this issue features a total of 22 papers on ITER and Wendelstein 7-X, a unique collection of papers on two projects that sit at the forefront of fusion engineering. The IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) is held annually, sponsored by the Plasma Science and Applications Committee (PSAC) of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS). The 47th IEEE NPSS ICOPS was organized ONLINE from December 06 to 10, 2020, by the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The ICOPS2020 was co-organized together with the 2nd Asia-Pacific Conference on Plasma and Terahertz Science (APCOPTS) which is envisioned as the future Asian version of the ICOPS series of conferences. The ICOPS2020 was initially planned as an onsite physical conference from May 24 to 28, 2020, at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was shifted to online virtual conference. The conference’s technical program included a wide range of plasma science and technology topics, which ranged from basic and fundamental research to traditional and emerging technology applications. Since the ICOPS2020 was co-organized with APCOPTS, it also had a very strong coverage of fields related to terahertz science and applications. A total of 627 presentations from scientists and participants from over 41 countries were made at ICOPS2020 with a record total registration of 754. All presentations were recorded and were available to the registered participants for 90 days after the conference was over. The program also included a women-in-engineering talk by Jackie Y. Ying from A* Star Singapore and a young professionals networking symposium on “Plasma Entrepreneurship” with the theme “Plasma entrepreneurship—Active translation of cutting-edge research to commercially viable product.” [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objectives of this tutorial are as follows: 1) to help students and researchers develop a basic understanding of how pulsed-power systems are used to create high-energy-density (HED) matter; 2) to develop a basic understanding of a new, compact, and efficient pulsed-power technology called linear transformer drivers (LTDs); 3) to understand why LTDs are an attractive technology for driving HED physics (HEDP) experiments; 4) to contrast LTDs with the more traditional Marxgenerator/ pulse-forming-line approach to driving HEDP experiments; and 5) to briefly review the history of LTD technology as well as some of the LTD-driven HEDP research presently underway at universities and research laboratories across the globe. The 2018 Asia-Pacific Conference on Plasma and Terahertz Science (APCOPTS), an international conference intended to be held every two years as the Asia-Pacific version of the International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS), provides an excellent platform for academic exchange in the fields. The Latin American Workshop on Plasma Physics (LAWPP) is a regional meeting with global undertones, whose main purpose is to provide a forum for research carried out in Latin America, while presenting the main trends at international level on the various areas of plasma physics. Therefore, it fosters the establishment of scientific collaborations between Latin American researchers, as well as between them and researchers in developed countries, providing a proper forum to assess their results. The 16th version is to be carried out in Mexico City on 4-8 September, 2017. A special issue on selected papers of the 16th Latin American Workshop on Plasma Physics (LAWPP 2017) will be published within the next four months in the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. While it will be based on the Plenary and Invited talks, the guest editors, aided by a technical committee, covering a wide scope of specialties, will invite some of the best papers to be submitted to this issue, and send them to suitable referees. The scope of the papers will cover space and astrophysical plasmas, controlled nuclear fusion, dense magnetized plasmas, laser plasma interactions, basic plasma physics, and industrial and environmental applications. The combined IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) (held annually) and Pulsed Power Conference (held biennially) are merged once every six years, sponsored by the Plasma Science and Applications Committee (PSAC) and the Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee (PPS&T) of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS). The joint conference, called the Pulsed Power and Plasma Science Conference, was held on June 23–28, 2019, in Orlando, FL, USA. The conference’s technical program included a wide range of topics, which ranged from fundamental research to traditional and emerging technology applications. The conference had over 800 accepted abstracts, representing scientists from over 30 countries. The IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) is an annual meeting of the plasma physics community known for the broad range of topics addressed as well as for its varied international locations. The 42nd ICOPS was held in Belek, Antalya, Turkey, on May 24–28, 2015. It was the first time that ICOPS was held in Turkey and the region. The General Chair of ICOPS 2015 was Prof. Lütfi Öksüz from Suleyman Demirel University (Isparta, Turkey), the Technical Program Chair was Dr. Christine Coverdale from Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, NM, USA), and the conference Liaison was Prof. Edl Schamiloglu from the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, NM, USA). As is traditional, the conference consists of all plasma science topics including 7 technical sessions and 35 subsessions. There were almost 400 registrants at ICOPS 2015, and over 500 abstracts are included in the conference. The 41st IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS14) and the 20th IEEE International Conference on High-Power Particle Beams (Beams14) combined for the first time in 2014 as the IEEE ICOPS/Beams meeting. This scientific meeting took place from May 25 to May 29, 2014, in Washington, DC, at the historical Marriott Wardman Park hotel in Northwest DC. Participation included a broad range of scientific attendance, with a total of 566 researchers from 36 countries, with scientists from China, Russia, and Japan making the largest contribution to the international contingent. Following the pioneering research studies by individual inventors and teams from the 1840s to the 1960s on various aspects of electromagnetic launch using railguns, coilguns, and linear motors, there has been an explosion of interest since the 1970s. Much of this growth has been discussed at the International Electro-Magnetic Launcher Symposia that have taken place approximately every two years from 1980 to 2018. A brief description and a summary of the early work of pioneers in this field as well as the symposia is provided here. This marks the seventh issue of the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science dedicated to Spacecraft Charging Technology. The theme of this issue is based on the papers presented at the 15th Spacecraft Charging Technology Conference, Kobe, Japan, in 2018. The history of spacecraft charging goes back to the first Spacecraft Charging Technology Conference, sponsored by AFRL and NASA, that was held at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO, USA, in 1978. The 15th Spacecraft Charging Technology Conference was hosted by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the Graduate School of System Informatics, Kobe University. It continues a tradition of international conferences on a ~2-year cycle. This conference, as well as each previous one in the series, was a great success. The topical discussions have greatly helped in making progress in the fields of spacecraft charging, spacecraft-plasma interactions, and related areas. At the end of the 15th Conference, the assembly agreed to request publication of the proceedings of the conference in the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science and to encourage the submission of the papers presented at the conference to the Journal. This paper summarizes the Dr. Robert J. Barker memorial session at the IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science 2014. Each section summarizes progress in a plasma research area strongly influenced by Dr. Barker’s leadership: 1) plasma medicine; 2) atmospheric-pressure plasmas; 3) high-power microwaves; 4) pulsed power; and 5) numerical simulation of plasmas. This special Issue focuses on the field of dusty plasmas or also referred to as complex plasmas. Most of the papers were presented at the 8th International Conference on the Physics of Dusty Plasmas (8 ICPDP, ), which was hosted by Charles University and held in Prague, Czech Republic, on May 20–25, 2017. We would like to join the continuous tradition of special issues of the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science from April 1994, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016 associated with the other most important triennial meeting for the community, the Workshop on the Physics of Dusty Plasmas. The Asia-Pacific International Symposium on the Basics and Applications of Plasma Technology (APSPT) has been held in Taiwan or Japan every two–four years since 1997. It is an important annual event in the Asia-Pacific area and has been a great platform for scientists all around the world sharing novel and state-of-the-art research findings and exchanging innovative ideas in the field of plasma science and technology. The 10th APSPT was held on December 15–17, 2017 at Chung Yuan Christian University, Taoyuan, Taiwan. There has been a very strong program including 207 papers contributed by participants from eight countries. The Asia-Pacific International Symposium on the Basics and Applications of Plasma Technology (APSPT) has been held in Taiwan every two to four years since 1997. It is an important annual event in the Asia-Pacific area, providing an excellent platform for exchanging new ideas and sharing the most advanced knowledge in plasma-related science and technology. Thanks to the participants from 10 countries, in the 8th APSPT, we had a very strong program with 187 papers delivered at National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, in December 20–22, 2013. This special issue documents the selected presentations in all kinds of plasma science and technology. There were 51 papers submitted after the conference and 32 accepted to be published in this special issue. We also thank the authors, the reviewers, the editors, and the publisher, who have seamlessly worked together to publish this special issue in time. I hope it will help advance our knowledge in plasma science and technology and cultivate future scientific collaboration among those who participated in APSPT 2013.
