This paper presents a new passivity enforcement technique for frequency-dependent network equivalents expressed as rational models. The main feature of the proposed technique is that only a few residues of the rational model are perturbed, so that the passivity enforcement procedure becomes computationally more efficient compared to existing methods. The proposed technique is verified on practical network cases. This paper describes a new method of power-grid signal variation measurement, consisting of a demodulation algorithm and a set of measures (indices). This is an introductory paper on z-transform-based methods for electromagnetic transient simulations of power systems. Since the theory of the z-transform was originally developed for the analysis of time series data defined at equidistant time steps, simulation models developed using z-transforms can readily be used in electromagnetic transient simulations based on the same time step. The aim of this paper is to introduce a novel real-time digital signal processing technique for power quality disturbance detection. The proposed technique is inspired on the Divide and Conquer Principle and on the Innovation Concept. Essentially, the Divide and Conquer Principle is applied in splitting the monitored disturbance event into stationary and nonstationary components, allowing localized individual signal analysis. Thereafter, the Innovation Concept is introduced for revealing new information not previously observed in the energy of the nonstationary signals and so detecting a new event. In addition, this paper demonstrates a straightforward and feasible way to evaluate the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) or a distortion measure for voltage signals. In this paper, a novel power-based algorithm to discriminate between switching and internal fault conditions in power transformers is proposed and evaluated. First, the differential power signal is scrutinized and its intrinsic features during inrush conditions are introduced. Afterwards, a combined time-domain-based waveshape classification technique is proposed. This technique exploits the suggested features and provides two discriminative indices. Based on the values of these indices, inrush power signals are identified after only half a cycle. This method is founded upon some inherent low-frequency features of power waveforms and is independent of the magnitude of differential power. The approach is also unaffected by power system parameters, operating conditions, noise and transformer magnetizing curves. Simplicity of the suggested features and equations describe how the proposed method can help make it a practical solution for the inrush problem. Extensive simulations carried out in PSCAD/EMTDC software validate the merit of this technique for various conditions, such as current-transformer saturation. The aim of this paper is to develop a complete model of a power-line communication (PLC) system operating on a medium-voltage (MV) network. The core-shield configuration was chosen for signal transmission in the power cables. In order to validate the developed model experimental, the medium-voltage network of the Favignana island was used to carry out detailed testing. The transmission was performed between two transformer substations in the presence of mains voltage (i.e., 24 kV). ST7540 FSK power-line transceivers, together with capacitive coupling interfaces, were used for the transmission and the reception of the communication signal. The correlation between the experimental measurements and the simulation results would appear to validate the use of the developed model for the analysis of MV transmission channels. A new insulation coordination procedure for switching overvoltages is presented. Based on the results of experiments, it considers the effect of the waveshape of impulses on the air gap strength, especially the impact of the time to crest and existing bumps above the continuous leader inception level. Signal-processing tools are applied to simulated overvoltage waveforms in order to extract their parameters which influence the insulation strength; the risk of failure of the transmission system is then derived. This paper describes a solution for automated analysis of circuit breaker operation. The analysis is based on a record of waveforms taken from the circuit breaker control circuit by using a portable recorder and manually forcing an operation of the breaker. This solution was driven by a need to perform the analysis in a more timely and consistent manner than what is available with existing technology. The solution is implemented using advanced wavelet transforms for waveform feature extraction and an expert system for decision making. A web-based database solution for storing and retrieving both the field-recorded and processed data is also implemented. This paper presents an improved technique for detecting disturbances in voltage signals for power quality analysis. The main advantage of the proposed technique lies in its capability to detect disturbances when power frequency is time-varying. In addition, the technique is capable of detecting disturbances in frames corresponding to 1/64 of the fundamental component.
