Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation of radio signals can significantly degrade the performance of ultra-wideband localization systems indoors, it is hence crucial to mitigate the NLOS effect to enhance the accuracy of positioning. The existing NLOS mitigation algorithms to improve localization accuracy are either by compensating range errors through NLOS identification and mitigation methods for ranging or by using dedicated localization techniques. However, they are only applicable to some specific scenarios due to some special assumptions or the need of a priori knowledge, such as thresholds and distribution functions. Another disadvantage is that they neither have the capability to evaluate the magnitude of NLOS effect nor take account of the residual NLOS range errors during location estimation. To remedy these problems, this paper proposes a less environment-dependent and a priori knowledge-independent NLOS identification and mitigation method for ranging which is able to determine the specific NLOS channel. Based on the identified channel information, a rule is developed to select appropriate NLOS ranges for location estimation. Meanwhile, an equality constrained Taylor series robust least squares (ECTSRLS) technique is proposed to suppress residual NLOS range errors by introducing robustness to Taylor series least squares method. All these constitute our FCE-ECTSRLS NLOS mitigation algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with four existing NLOS mitigation algorithms by both static and mobile localization experiments in a harsh indoor environment. Energy efficiency (EE) and spectrum efficiency (SE) have received significant attentions on optimizing the network performance in cognitive radio networks. In this paper, an EE+SE tradeoff based target is considered for the primary users (PUs) and the secondary users (SUs). First of all, considering the orthogonal frequency division multiple access-based resource allocation (RA) for the underlying SUs, we formulate an objective function through minimizing a weighted sum of the secondary interference power, where the network performance of both PUs and SUs are guaranteed by the constraints on quality of service, power consumption and data rate. However, it is a NP-hard problem. In order to solve it, we propose a damped three dimensional (D3D) message-passing algorithm (MPA) based on deep learning. Specifically, a feed-forward neural network is devised and an analogous back propagation algorithm is developed to learn the optimal parameters of the D3D-MPA. To improve the computational efficiency of the allocation and the learning, a suboptimal RA scheme is deduced based on a damped two dimensional MPA. In this paper, we propose a generalized channel decoding scheme for nonbinary physical-layer network coding (CD-NC) in two-way relay channels (TWRCs), where two source nodes A and B exchange their nonbinary symbols via a relay. The two sources use the same nonbinary low-density parity-check (LDPC) channel code over the integer ring $\mathbb {Z}_M$ and $M$ -pulse-amplitude modulation, respectively. The existing channel decoding schemes for nonbinary network coding suffer severe rate loss compared with the cut-set bound of TWRC, especially in the low-to-medium signal-to-noise ratio regime. The proposed CD-NC can decrease the rate loss. Our contributions are as follows: 1) We develop a generalized nonbinary sum product algorithm (G-SPA) for CD-NC according to the principle of virtual encoding of the superimposed symbols. Simulation results show that our CD-NC can achieve significant performance gains over the conventional nonbinary network coding for both additive white Gaussian noise and fading channels; and 2) We exploit two-dimensional fast-Fourier-transform-based belief propagation (2-D-FFT-BP) and extended min-sum (EMS) decoding algorithms to reduce the decoding complexity of G-SPA. Simulation results show that the 2-D-FFT-BP has the same performance as G-SPA, while EMS can greatly reduce the decoding complexity of G-SPA at the cost of slight performance degradation. Due to emerging mobile applications and an Internet of Things, data traffic carried by wireless networks has increased dramatically. As a result, maximizing the utilization of the limited network resource is a top priority. To date, there exists a large body of work on the stochastic network utility maximization (NUM) problem. On the one hand, the stochastic NUM problem and its associated solutions have been mainly investigated under the light-tailed (LT) data condition. On the other hand, empirical results show that data delivered by wireless networks is not only large in volume but also highly variable, which can be characterized by heavy-tailed (HT) distributions. Such HT traffic exhibits high burstiness and strong temporal correlations, which are fundamentally different from the behavior of LT traffic. In this paper, first it is shown that the classic stochastic gradient algorithms (SGAs), as effective solutions for stochastic NUM problems, fail to prevent HT traffic flows from aggressively competing with LT flows for limited resources. This leads to unbounded queueing delay for LT flows, which results in network instability. To counter such a challenge, the time-average stochastic gradient routing algorithm is proposed, which prevents competition among HT and LT traffic flows so that utility optimality and network stability can be achieved simultaneously. Moreover, because HT data have unbounded moments, such as mean and variance, it is not feasible to apply the conventional convergence analysis, which assumes the moment boundedness of traffic arrivals. To address this problem, the ordinary differential equation method is adopted to prove that the proposed algorithm still converges even with highly variable HT traffic. The portfolio of models offered by car manufacturing groups often includes many variants (i.e., different car models and their versions). With such diversity in car models, variant management becomes a formidable task. Thus, there is an effort to keep the variants as close as possible. This simple requirement forms a big challenge in the area of communication protocols. When several vehicle variants use the same signal, it is often required to simultaneously schedule such a signal in all vehicle variants. Furthermore, new vehicle variants are designed incrementally in such a way as to maintain backward compatibility with the older vehicles. Backward compatibility of time-triggered schedules reduces expenses relating to testing and fine-tuning of the components that interact with physical environment (e.g., electromagnetic compatibility issues). As this requirement provides for using the same platform, it simplifies signal traceability and diagnostics, across different vehicle variants, besides simplifying the reuse of components and tools. This paper proposes an efficient and robust heuristic algorithm, which creates the schedules for internal communication of new vehicle variants. The algorithm provides for variant management by ensuring compatibility among the new variants, besides preserving backward compatibility with the preceding vehicle variants. The proposed method can save about 20% of the bandwidth with respect to the schedule common to all variants. Based on the results of the proposed algorithm, the impact of maintaining compatibility among new variants and of preserving backward compatibility with the preceding variants on the scheduling procedure is examined and discussed. Thanks to the execution time of the algorithm, which is less than one second, the network parameters like the frame length and cycle duration are explored to find their best choice concerning the schedule feasibility. In this paper, we develop a novel layered coding scheme for the multiple-input multiple-output multicast channel. In this scheme, information is encoded in two layers, a base low-resolution (LR) layer and refining high-resolution (HR) one. The LR layer is encoded using Grassmannian noncoherent codes and the HR layer is encoded in the indices of the active transmitter antennas using the so-called space shift keying modulation. An efficient algorithm is proposed to optimize the HR codebook. The LR information can be detected noncoherently without invoking any channel state information (CSI), whereas the HR information must be detected coherently and, thus, requires accurate CSI. Hence, receivers with perfect CSI can decode both the LR and HR information, whereas those with no CSI can only decode the LR information. For receivers with accurate CSI, we propose a computationally efficient two-step detector and we show that the noncoherent detector performance is not affected by the transmission of the incremental HR information encoded in the transmit antenna indices. In this correspondence paper, we study the application of approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm in the signal detection of index modulation (IM) with multiple active resources (antennas or subcarriers). First, for uplink generalized spatial modulation (GSM), AMP detectors in both spatially uncorrelated and correlated channels are proposed. Specifically, an effective method to utilize the activation pattern constraint of GSM signal vector per user in the posterior probability computation of scalar symbol node is derived. Furthermore, a simple while effective damping strategy is introduced in AMP detector to guarantee convergence in correlated channels. Second, for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with IM in rapidly time-varying channels, the damped AMP detector is further studied. This paper proposes a zone-based approach referred to as zone-based GrEEn (ZBGrEEn) algorithm, for energy-efficient spectrum sharing (SS) networks. The SS network is considered to encompass device-to-device (D2D) transmissions between a single primary transmitter (PT) and multiple primary receivers (PRs), placed in distinctive zones around the PT. Power allocation is performed optimally so that the target rate of each application demanded by the PRs are adequately met. When the PT fails to meet the target rates over ${\rm{PT}} \to {\rm{PR}}$ D2D links, it transmits cooperatively through an appropriate secondary transmitter (ST) in the SS network, which acts as an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. The ST's basis for selection is the ${\rm{PT}} \to {\rm{ST}}$ channel state and power level at the ST. Use of game theory for solving the energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem has also been quantified. ZBGrEEn introduces zone factor for determining the transmission time for each zone in the SS network. This time determines the energy consumption at the user terminals, thereby impacting its battery lifetime. The efficiency of the proposed scheme has been validated through simulation results, with the enhancement in battery lifetime of up to 46.28% achievable for the PT. Game theory is also observed to be rewarding in battery lifetime augmentation, especially for ultradense networks (UDNs). Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting technique has received high attention as a promising technology for Internet of Things (IoT) based industrial systems due to its flexibility of energy supply. When multiple IoT gateways are used as directional RF energy sources, the direction and phase of RF energy transmissions influence the RF energy transmission efficiency. In this paper, we propose a phase-aware directional energy transmission algorithm (PA-DETA) where directional RF energy sources (e.g., IoT gateways) are connected to a controller and their operation parameters (i.e., RF energy transmission direction and initial phase) are decided by the controller to maximize the total harvested energy while maintaining the energy consumption in RF energy sources and the number of discarded packets due to energy depletion of harvesting nodes below certain levels. To optimize the performance of PA-DETA, we formulate a constraint Markov decision process and the optimal policy on the direction and initial phase of RF energy transmissions is obtained by a linear programming. Evaluation results demonstrate that PA-DETA with the optimal policy outperforms the comparison schemes in terms of the total harvested energy, the energy consumption in RF energy sources, and the packet discard rate. In this paper, we model $M\times N$ orthogonal time frequency space modulation (OTFS) over a $P$ -path doubly dispersive channel with delays less than $\tau _{\max }$ and Doppler shifts in the range $(\nu _{\min },\nu _{\max })$. We first derive in a simple matrix form the input–output relation in the delay-Doppler domain for practical (e.g., rectangular) pulse-shaping waveforms, next generalize it to arbitrary waveforms. This relation extends the original OTFS input–output approach, which assumes ideal pulse-shaping waveforms that are bi-orthogonal in both time and frequency. We show that the OTFS input–output relation has a simple sparse structure that enables one to use low-complexity detection algorithms. Different from previous work, only a single cyclic prefix is added at the end of the OTFS frame, significantly reducing the overhead, without incurring any penalty from the loss of bi-orthogonality of the pulse-shaping waveforms. Finally, we compare the OTFS performance with different pulse-shaping waveforms, and show that the reduction of out-of-band power may introduce nonuniform channel gains for the transmitted symbols, thus impairing the overall error performance. Caching in wireless device-to-device (D2D) networks can bring contents closer to users and reduce backhaul traffic. However, the major obstacle to realize cache-enabled D2D communications is the selfish nature of users. In this paper, we propose an incentive mechanism for pricing the contributions of D2D transmitters in cache-enabled D2D-underlaid cellular networks modeled by stochastic geometry. A Stackelberg game is employed to resolve the conflict of interests between the operator and D2D transmitters. The main objective of this game is to reach the Stackelberg equilibrium, in which both the operator and D2D transmitters achieve the maximum profit by designing the optimal incentive price and the optimal caching strategy. We show the existence of the equilibrium and propose a low-complexity algorithm to obtain the near-optimal caching strategy and incentive price. Numerical results verify the existence of the SE and the advantages of the proposed scheme in terms of the utilities for the operator and D2D transmitters over existing caching schemes with fixed incentive. With the prosperity of mobile internet and the pervasiveness of location-aware mobile terminals, online ride-hailing, a high-level location-based service (LBS) which relies on dynamic spatial query, has made our life more convenient. However, the flourish of ride-hailing service still faces many severe challenges since users’ location privacy and service provider's data security. In this paper, we present an efficientand privacy-preserving dynamicspatial query scheme (TRACE) for ride-hailing service. With TRACE, users (i.e., consumers and vehicles) can access ride-hailing service without divulging their sensitive location information, meanwhile, the ride-hailing server can achieve the necessary commercial operating information while keeping its sensitive data (i.e., the space division information) confidential. Specifically, with two proposed efficient and secure spatial query algorithms, named FSSQ and ESVQ, all location-related data are encrypted by its owner before being sent out, and are calculated without decryption during the spatial query process. Therefore, consumers, vehicles, and service provider cannot obtain each other's sensitive information. Detailed security analysis shows that TRACE can resist various known security threats. Furthermore, TRACE is implemented in the real environment, and extensive simulation results over smart phones demonstrate that the scheme is highly efficient and can be implemented effectively. This paper studies finding the secure path according to the secrecy connectivity probability (SCP) in the multihop ad hoc networks in the presence of inhomogeneous eavesdropper clusters. We consider both random and fixed eavesdropper clusters, where the former case assumes that there is no knowledge of the locations of the clusters and the latter case assumes that the locations of the clusters can be estimated accurately. First, we derive the end-to-end SCP to characterize the secrecy performance of a given path in a general multihop wireless network with half-duplex randomize-and-forward relaying. Then, we consider a full-duplex scheme at the legitimate receiver, which receives the useful information while broadcasting a jamming signal to the potential eavesdroppers to further enhance the secrecy connectivity. Then, a novel secure routing algorithm that can provide the maximum SCP for any legitimate transmitter/receiver pair in a distributed manner is proposed. The theoretical analysis is verified by Monte Carlo simulation results. The results show that our secure routing algorithm provides similar results compared to an exhaustive search. For the random eavesdropper cluster case, the optimal route is independent of the knowledge of the cluster, which is the same as the homogeneous eavesdropper case. However, for the case where eavesdropper clusters are fixed and their locations are knowna priori, the optimal path selection depends on the radii and locations of the eavesdropper clusters and the average number of eavesdroppers in each cluster. In this paper, we study the distributed precoding problem for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in decode-and-forward (DF)-based multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) relay networks. The system model considered here consists of a source, a relay, an information decoding (ID) receiver, and an energy harvesting (EH) receiver, all mounted with multiple antennas. Since full channel state information (CSI) is usually unavailable, a practical scenario, where only local CSI is required, is considered in this paper. Such a practical scenario naturally constitutes a noncooperative game, where the source and the relay can be regarded as two rational game players. With properly designed utilities, it can be further shown that the existence and uniqueness of the pure-strategy Nash equilibrium (NE) of the proposed game can both be guaranteed under some mild conditions. Therefore, a distributed iterative precoding algorithm can be developed based on the best-response dynamic to obtain the unique NE solution for the proposed game. Moreover, a proximal-point-based regularization approach is also pursued to ensure the convergence of the proposed algorithm without requiring special restrictions on the channel ranks. Numerical simulations are also provided to demonstrate the proposed algorithm. Results show that our algorithm can converge quickly to a satisfactory solution with guaranteed convergence. This paper presents a novel cooperative-driving prediction and planning framework for dynamic environments based on the methods of game theory. The proposed algorithm can be used for highly automated driving on highways or as a sophisticated prediction module for advanced driver-assistance systems with no need for intervehicle communication. The main contribution of this paper is a model-based interaction-aware motion prediction of all vehicles in a scene. In contrast to other state-of-the-art approaches, the system also models the replanning capabilities of all drivers. With that, the driving strategy is able to capture complex interactions between vehicles, thus planning maneuver sequences over longer time horizons. It also enables an accurate prediction of traffic for the next immediate time step. The prediction model is supported by an interpretation of what other drivers intend to do, how they interact with traffic, and the ongoing observation. As part of the prediction loop, the proposed planning strategy incorporates the expected reactions of all traffic participants, offering cooperative and robust driving decisions. The aim of this paper consists of developing a hybrid active control system to reduce the impact of vertical forces on roads and, therefore, to avoid the rollover of heavy vehicles (HVs). The controller is based on a super twisting algorithm. Two states are then fixed, which correspond to the controller being on or off. They are based on the lower limit and the upper limit of lateral acceleration. These states have been computed from the fixed lower limit and upper limit of the load transfer ratio (LTR). The system switches between these two states to control the vehicle. An estimator based on the sliding-mode observer is also developed to estimate the vehicle dynamics, such as yaw rate, roll angle, and lateral acceleration. The lateral positions and speeds are then controlled to limit the lateral acceleration of the vehicle, reduce the effect of impact forces, and prevent the risk of vehicle rollover. This paper examines the problem of optimizing hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) power management for fuel economy. This paper begins by presenting a pseudospectral algorithm to solve this optimization problem. Compared with traditional dynamic programming (DP)-based optimal power management approaches, this algorithm has two key advantages: It is numerically more efficient, and it furnishes both the optimal state and costate trajectories. Building on the second advantage, this paper proposes a two-level strategy for optimal power management in vehicles commuting along fixed routes. The upper level of the proposed strategy is a costate adaptation algorithm employing pseudospectral optimization, whereas the lower level is an instantaneous optimization controller employing Pontryagin's minimum principle (PMP). This paper shows its pseudospectral optimization algorithm and two-level strategy using numerical simulation for a series hybrid school bus. Parameters of the bus powertrain model are obtained from experimental component tests performed at the National Engineering Laboratory for Electric Vehicles, Beijing Institute of Technology. Simulation results show that the pseudospectral method reaches a solution close to DP with higher computational efficiency. Furthermore, the proposed two-level strategy is capable of adapting vehicle power management based on road-grade predictions, i.e., an attractive feature compared with more traditional online hybrid power management approaches such as the use of proportional integral derivative (PID) control for adaptive equivalent fuel consumption minimization [PID equivalent consumption minimization strategy (PID-ECMS)]. To efficiently trade off system sum-rate and link fairness, this paper is dedicated to maximizing the sum of \alpha-fair utility in spectrum-sharing networks, where multiple interfering links share one channel. In the literature, three special cases, including \alpha=\mbox{0} (sum-rate maximization), \alpha=\mbox{1} (proportional fairness), and \alpha=\infty (max-min fairness), have been investigated; the complexity for cases \mbox{1} < \alpha < \infty and \mbox{0} < \alpha < \mbox{1} is still unknown. In this paper, we prove that the problem is convex when \mbox1 < \alpha < \infty and is NP-hard when \mbox0 < \alpha < \mbox1. To deal with the latter case, we transform the objective function and represent it by the difference of two concave functions (D.C.). Then, a power allocation algorithm is proposed with fast convergence to a local optimal point. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can obtain global optimality in two-link cases when \mbox0 < \alpha < \mbox1. Modeling the variations in the local mean received power, the shadow fading is a relatively understudied effect in the literature. The inaccuracy of the universally accepted lognormal model is shown in many works. However, proposing other statistical distributions, such as gamma, which are not stemmed from the natural underlying physical process, cannot provide sufficient insights. Conceding the physical process of multiple reflections generating the lognormal distribution, in this paper, we propose a generalized mixture model that can address the modeling inaccuracies observed with a single lognormal distribution that may not correctly represent empirical data sets. To show that lognormal mixture model can be used under any shadow fading condition, we prove that an arbitrary probability density function can accurately be represented by a mixture of lognormal random variables (RVs). One of the main issues associated with mixture models is the determination of the mixture components. Here, we propose two solutions. Our first solution is a Dirichlet-process-mixture-based estimation technique that can provide the optimum number of components. Our second solution is an expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm-based technique for a more practical implementation. The proposed model and solution approaches are applied to our empirical data set, where the accuracy of the mixture model is verified by using both confidence-based and error-vector-norm-based techniques. Concluding this paper, we provide outage and cellular coverage probability expressions, where we show that more accurate shadow fading models yield more realistic performance estimates. In delay-tolerant networks (DTNs), stable end-to-end connections do not always exist. Messages are forwarded, assisted by the mobility of nodes, in a store–carry–forward paradigm. The mobility of nodes in most DTNs has a certain statistical regularity; thus, using historical information in DTNs to compute the delivery quality of nodes can help to select good forwarding nodes. This paper aims to establish a routing scheme based on multihop delivery quality, which is designed to reduce the energy consumption of message forwarding while maintaining a high delivery rate. We characterized the multihop delivery quality of each node with an expected delay and an expected probability, parameterized by the remaining hop count. Based on these two quality metrics, we developed two algorithms, namely, the delay-inferred forwarding (DIF) algorithm and the probability-inferred forwarding (PIF) algorithm. The basic idea of DIF and PIF is to find the optimal forwarding path by minimizing the expected delay and by maximizing the expected probability, respectively, in the hop graph that is defined in this paper. We performed extensive trace-driven simulations to compare our algorithm to other representative routing algorithms using several real traces. We observed the following: 1) Compared with the delegation algorithm, which uses one-hop delivery quality, both DIF and PIF significantly improve the message delivery rate, and they yield more improvements as the mobility of nodes becomes more regular; and 2) compared with the state-of-the-art optimal opportunistic forwarding (OOF) algorithm, which also uses a multihop delivery quality, DIF and PIF have significantly smaller forwarding overhead (with the maximum reduction in the number of forwarding being over 40%), whereas they are quite close to OOF in terms of both delivery rate and average delay. With the rapid emergence of applications in Mobile Opportunistic Networks (MONs), understanding and characterizing their properties becomes extremely important. A fundamental model for MONs is time-varying graph, which currently remains poorly understood since many well-recognized properties of static graphs have no obvious counterpart in dynamic ones. In MONs, the dynamical links change opportunistically and usually the system energy is very limited, which results in unique and unknown properties about the network connectivity and reachability. In this paper, taking the communication energy into account, we introduce the concept of Energy-aware Temporal Reachability Graphs (ETRG), which characterizes the connectivity of MONs with the consideration of communication consumed energy, and consequently reveals the communication capabilities of MONs with the given of real-world system parameters of data size, tolerable delay, and energy budget. We come up with efficient algorithm to calculate ETRG from the corresponding time-varying graphs. By applying ETRG to several mobile networks recorded by real-life human and vehicular mobility traces, we characterize their network connectivity properties in terms of average reachability, communication asymmetry, and stability. Moreover, utilizing ETRG that places upper bounds of the communications capabilities, we reveal the fundamental relations and tradeoffs among large-scale variability of the system metrics of energy budget, tolerable delay, and data size on the system performance. This paper investigates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled secure communication systems where a mobile UAV wishes to send confidential messages to multiple ground users. To improve the security performance, a cooperative UAV is additionally considered that transmits the jamming signal. In this system, we maximize the minimum secrecy rate among the ground users by jointly optimizing the trajectory and the transmit power of the UAVs as well as the user scheduling. To efficiently solve this nonconvex problem, we adopt block successive upper bound minimization techniques, which address a sequence of approximated convex problems for each block of variables. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are anticipated to be widely deployed in future wireless communications, due to their advantages of high mobility and easy deployment. However, the broadcast nature of air-to-ground line-of-sight wireless channels brings a new challenge to the information security of UAV-ground communication. This paper tackles such a challenge in the physical layer by exploiting the mobility of UAV via its trajectory design. We consider a UAV-ground communication system with multiple potential eavesdroppers on the ground, where the information on the locations of the eavesdroppers is imperfect. We formulate an optimization problem, which maximizes the average worst case secrecy rate of the system by jointly designing the robust trajectory and transmit power of the UAV over a given flight duration. The nonconvexity of the optimization problem and the imperfect location information of the eavesdroppers make the problem difficult to be solved optimally. We propose an iterative suboptimal algorithm to solve this problem efficiently by applying the block coordinate descent method, $\mathcal {S}$ -procedure, and successive convex optimization method. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the average worst case secrecy rate significantly, as compared to two other benchmark algorithms without robust design. As an important complement and enhancement technique for cellular communication systems, the device-to-device (D2D) technique has exhibited a number of benefits in terms of, for instance, offering an improved spectral efficiency, enabling a reduced transmit power and providing an enhanced channel capacity, etc. However, a severe interference may be imposed on the conventional cellular users by the activated D2D links, thus, substantially eroding the performance of the former. In this paper, we propose an interference limited area (ILA) based D2D-management scheme along with an appropriately designed power control algorithm for mitigating the above-mentioned interference. We first derive the closed-form expressions of the average coverage probability for both the cellular and D2D links under the proposed ILA scheme, followed by proposing a resource-allocation algorithm subject to a power control mechanism. Numerical results show that the proposed ILA scheme is capable of outperforming the conventional scheme in terms of both the coverage probability (i.e., for both cellular and D2D links) and the sum data rate, particularly in the scenarios with a high D2D density and a high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. It is a promising solution for real-time multitarget tracking to implement particle cardinality balanced multitarget multi-Bernoulli (CBMeMBer) filters in hardware platforms. However, this solution is difficult to materialize since there is a contradiction between the time-varying number of Bernoulli intensity components in CBMeMBer filters and the limited number of particles in hardware platforms. Moreover, real-time hardware implementation requires a resampling procedure that is suitable for parallel processing, while the existing parallel resampling algorithms oversimplify this procedure, resulting in estimation performance degradation. In this paper, we propose an optimization algorithm of particle allocation to overcome the above-mentioned contradiction, and a parallel resampling algorithm to improve the estimation performance. Short packet communications (SPC) will play an important role in future Internet-of-Things networks. Conventional pilot-assisted transmission (PAT) needs significant overhead to obtain accurate channel state information (CSI) for further symbol detection and bit recovery, thereby reducing the spectral efficiency of the transmission. In this paper, a machine learning framework called Label-Assisted Transmission is proposed, in which the received signals are grouped into clusters through clustering algorithms and known labels are transmitted for cluster-symbol/bits mapping. This novel framework supports bit recovery directly without requiring the bit-symbol mapping information. When such mapping information is available, modulation constrained (MC) clustering algorithms are proposed, which exploit the unique characteristics of digital communication signals. For frequency-flat channels, this novel design needs only one known label regardless of the modulation size and the missing labels can be reconstructed using a proposed label reconstruction scheme. For frequency-selective channels with $L$ -tap time domain channel responses, only $L$ known labels are needed to reconstruct the missing labels if orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology is adopted. The proposed clustering receiver works well even when the number of clusters is much larger than the number of received samples. The performance of the proposed framework is analyzed empirically through extensive simulations, which verify that the proposed scheme approaches the maximum likelihood detector with perfect CSI. With the advent of the Internet of things, massive machine-type communications (mMTC) have become one of the most important requirements for next generation communication systems. In the mMTC scenarios, grant-free nonorthogonal multiple access on the transmission side and compressive sensing-based multi-user detection (CS-MUD) on the reception side are a promising solution because many users sporadically transmit small data packets at low rates. In this paper, we propose a novel CS-MUD algorithm for the active user and data detection in the mMTC systems. The proposed scheme consists of the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) based active user detector (MAP-AUD) and the MAP-based data detector (MAP-DD). By exchanging the extrinsic information between MAP-AUD and MAP-DD, the proposed algorithm improves the active user detection performance and the reliability of the data detection. In addition, we extend the proposed algorithm to exploit group sparsity. By jointly processing the multiple received data with common activity, the proposed algorithm dramatically enhances the active user detection performance. In the air–ground propagation channel, multipath propagation severely affects the performance of the communication, navigation, and surveillance systems used in civil aviation. To gain a deeper understanding of the air–ground channel, we are interested in the locations of objects causing multipath propagation. Therefore, in this paper we propose and experimentally validate an algorithm to localize reflectors causing multipath components based on channel sounding data collected using omnidirectional antennas. The algorithm relies on superresolution parameter estimation and tracking as well as on a localization algorithm. To ensure link reliability and signal receiving quality, robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) is vital important in mobile communications. In this paper, we propose a new RAB algorithm based on interference-plus-noise covariance (INC) matrix reconstruction and steering vector (SV) estimation. In this method, the INC matrix is reconstructed by estimating all interferences SVs and powers, as well as the noise power. The interference SVs are estimated by using the Capon spatial spectrum together with robust Capon beamforming principle, subsequently the interference powers are estimated based on the orthogonality between different signal SVs. On the other hand, the desired signal SV is estimated via maximizing the beamformer output power by solving a quadratic convex optimization problem. The proposed algorithm only needs to know in advance the array geometry and angular sector, in which the desired signal lies. The importance of robust audio speech processing has rapidly increased in the latest years, as the number of smart and connected devices is growing. This effect is strongly related to the Internet of things framework, introducing concepts such as connected vehicles and future smart cities. Context-aware applications are fundamental in this evolving environment, enabling smart and custom-tailored services for a variety of users. The use of on-board speaker recognition (SR) systems can play a key role in enhancing the customization of in-vehicle applications, by identifying the actual users and personalizing services based on their identity. Driven by this motivation, in this paper we present a performance study of an SR system, designed to face typical challenging conditions of an in-vehicle environment. We propose the design of a robust speaker identification algorithm embedding a smart preprocessing method based on voice activity detection, which can effectively reduce the influence of noise and distance on classification. Results show that our solution is able to efficiently improve the correct classification rate, even in the case of distant audio acquisition and in a variety of noisy environments. The employment of social similarity (SS) aware device-to-device (D2D) user equipment (UE)-to-network (UE-NW) relay helps to improve system capacity and UEs’ accessability to the evolved Node B (eNB), where a crucial aspect is the design of the relay helper UE (HUE) selection process. However, few existing studies jointly consider the diverse impacts from various design criteria on the performance of HUE selection. In this paper, we formulate the SS-aware D2D UE-NW relay selection (RS) issue as a multiobjective binary integer linear programming (MOBILP) problem under the constraints of several criteria. Then, we propose a new two-stage D2D UE-NW selection scheme. Specifically, a joint algorithm exploiting the intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and the entropy weight generation method is designed for stage one, which provides both subjective and objective preferences for assisting decision making. In stage two, with the constructed decision weights, the MOBILP can be transformed to a simpler binary integer linear programming problem and thus be solved distributively through an efficient message passing method. Video streaming over vehicular networks has considerable benefits for both road safety and entertainment. In this paper, the scalable video coding over cooperative vehicular networks is investigated to improve the performance of video streaming services. We formulate a joint optimization problem to answer questions about the number of video layers that should be transmitted for each vehicle, the selection of relay vehicles to assist destination vehicles, and the assignment of radio resources to direct and cooperative communications. We decouple the problem into two subproblems, i.e., the quality of service (QoS)-driven resource allocation (QoSRA) subproblem and the layer selection (LS) subproblem. We solve the QoSRA subproblem by converting it into a generalized maximum concurrent flow problem, and propose a tabu search-based metaheuristic algorithm for the LS subproblem. This paper considers a heavy loaded full-duplex (FD) small cell consisting of one FD base station and multiple half-duplex users where the number of subchannels is less than the number of uplink and downlink users. With the objective of maximizing the total sum-rate, a joint power allocation, and user pairing problem is formulated. To solve this problem, a novel decomposition method is proposed, which decouples the power allocation and user pairing problem into two subproblems. It is proven that the optimal solution of subproblems is the optimal solution of the original problem. Then, optimal algorithms are developed for the two subproblems. Ultradense heterogeneous networks (HetNets) are emerging as an inevitable approach to tackle the capacity crunch in cellular networks. However, imbalanced load among small and macrocells and poor resource utilization as a consequence in HetNets remains a long-standing problem. This paper addresses this problem by presenting a solution for maximization of coverage and capacity while minimizing load imbalance among macro and small cells. Most recent studies on the topic focus on either optimization of coverage, capacity or load, or a combination of two of these three intertwined objectives. We formulate the optimization problem as a function of two hard parameters namely antenna tilt and transmit power, and a soft parameter, cell individual offset, that affect the coverage, capacity, and load directly. The resulting solution is a combination of the otherwise conflicting coverage and capacity optimization (CCO) and load balancing (LB) self-organizing network (SON) functions. In the presented joint CCO-LB solution, a conflict free operation of CCO and LB is ensured by designing a novel load aware user association methodology and resolving the effects of shadowing on coverage probability using stochastic approximation. The problem is proven to be nonconvex and is solved using genetic algorithm, sequential quadratic programming, and pattern search algorithms. The proposed CCO-LB solution is compared against two recently proposed CCO and CCO-LB solutions in the literature. The hidden terminal problem degrades the uplink system throughput of wireless local area network seriously. In this paper, we propose the optimum allocation (OA) scheme of the location-based virtual sector (VS) method, which solves the hidden terminal problem without massive overheads like request-to-send and clear-to-send (RTS/CTS) packets. The VS method forms sectors virtually to make short-distance mobile terminal (MT) groups using MTs’ location information. In the group, all MTs can sense the transmission of all other MTs. In the proposed method, rough time slot control is implemented for intersector control, which does not need a highly functional centralized controller. The proposal OA scheme of the VS method improves the fairness among MTs by optimizing active periods of VS according to the number of MTs in each VS. By computer simulations, we show that the proposed method can increase the system throughput from the RTS/CTS and improve fairness among MTs even in the condition that positioning error is 1/10 of cell radius. Traffic offloading via device-to-device communications is expected to play a major role to meet the exponential data traffic growth in wireless networks. In this paper, we focus on the problem of user capacity maximization in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks with device-to-device cooperation, where a large number of users in a given geographical area request common data content, such as video on demand streaming, with strict quality of service guarantees. We aim at finding the best strategy for delivering the content either over long range connectivity from the access points or short range connectivity from peer mobile terminals while meeting a target rate per served user. We formulate the multiuser resource management problem as an optimization problem including traffic offloading and channel allocation considering a very high user density reaching up to 1.75 users per square meter. We extend the system model to include mobile terminals acting as content owners by having the content cached locally, in order to further enhance the network capacity and coverage. We then propose an iterative resource management solution, which first solves the optimization subproblem of traffic offloading with orthogonal channels, and then optimally allocates channels to the transmitters with minimized interference due to channel reuse. We also propose efficient suboptimal hierarchical tree-based algorithms that operate in real time with dynamic and fast solutions for ultra-dense networks. For performance evaluation, we consider a realistic scenario consisting of a stadium topology with thousands of mobile terminals active simultaneously. We generate results as a function of a wide range of system parameters, and demonstrate that the proposed algorithms achieve near-optimal performance with notably low time complexity. This paper presents a comprehensive study of underwater visible light communications (UVLC), from channel characterization, performance analysis, and effective transmission and reception methods. To this end, we first simulate the fading-free impulse response (FFIR) of UVLC channels using Monte Carlo numerical procedure to take into account the absorption and scattering effects; and then to characterize turbulence effects, we multiply the aforementioned FFIR by a fading coefficient modeled as a lognormal random variable (RV) for weak oceanic turbulence. Based on this general channel model, we analytically study the bit error rate (BER) performance of UVLC systems with binary pulse position modulation (BPPM). In the next step, to mitigate turbulence effects, we employ multiple transmitters and/or receivers, i.e., we apply spatial diversity technique over UVLC links. Closed-form expressions for the system BER are provided, when an equal gain combiner is employed at the receiver side, thanks to the Gauss–Hermite quadrature formula as well as approximation to the sum of lognormal RVs. We further apply saddle-point approximation, an accurate photon-counting method, to evaluate the system BER in the presence of shot noise. Both laser-based collimated and light emitting diode based diffusive links are investigated. Additionally, in order to reduce the intersymbol interference (ISI), introduced by the multiple-scattering effect of UVLC channels on the propagating photons, we also obtain the optimal multiple-symbol detection (MSD) algorithm, as well as the suboptimal generalized MSD (GMSD) algorithm. Our numerical analysis indicate good matches between the analytical and photon-counting results implying the negligibility of signal-dependent shot noise, and also between the analytical results and numerical simulations confirming the accuracy of our derived closed-form expressions for the system BER. Object detection plays an important role in intelligent transportation systems and intelligent vehicles. Although the topic of object detection has been studied for decades, it is still challenging to accurately detect objects under complex scenarios. The contributing factors for challenges include diversified object and background appearance, motion blur, adverse weather conditions, and complex interactions among objects. In this paper, we propose a new convolutional neural network (CNN) model for traffic object detection, by using multi-scale local and global feature representation (MFR). The proposed model consists of two components: a region proposal network that generates candidate object regions and an object detection network that incorporates multi-scale features and global information, namely MFR-CNN. These two components are jointly optimized. Once the system is trained, it can detect real-world traffic objects accurately, especially small objects and heavily occluded objects. We propose a Bayesian framework for the problem of multiuser dectection in the context of an unknown and time-varying number of active users. In this paper, we combine orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing modulation with multiantenna reception to mitigate both the asynchronism and frequency-selectivity of the wireless medium. We develop a method for user identity and data detection with joint channel parameter estimation, performed on a per-OFDM block basis to account for a highly dynamic random-access channel. Based on a factor graph approach, we derive an inference algorithm based on message-passing resulting in an iterative code-aided receiver. We show that a suitable Gaussian approximation leads to a complexity that increases only linearly with the maximum number of users. Computer simulations show that the proposed iterative receiver has a low probability of erroneous activity detection, while maintaining a high antenna diversity order for active users. Spectrum sensing in next-generation wireless radio networks is considered a key technology to overcome the problem of spectrum scarcity. Unfortunately, many approaches to spectrum sensing do not work well in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environments. This paper proposes and analyzes a new algorithm named kernelized generalized likelihood ratio test (KGLRT) for spectrum sensing in cognitive radio systems to overcome this problem. Effectively, KGLRT uses a nonlinear kernel to map input data onto a high-dimensional feature space; then, the widely accepted (linear) generalized likelihood ratio test is used for hypothesis testing. This new algorithm gives a gain of 4 dB in SNR over its linear counterpart. A theoretical analysis for this algorithm is given for the first time and is shown analogous to algorithms used in image signal processing. The detection metrics are found to be concentrated random variables; furthermore, the probability distributions of the detection metrics are proved to follow the F -distributions, which agree with the results obtained using the concentration inequality. The analytical thresholds are derived for target false-alarm probabilities. The thresholds are independent of noise power; thus, the proposed algorithm can overcome noise uncertainty issues at very low SNR levels. Simulations validate the theoretical results. Parameters tuning of the model and the controller is an essential problem for autonomous vehicles. Traditionally, parameter tuning work is accomplished by manual operation or grid search, which is a tedious and time-consuming work. Recently, thanks to the development of machine learning community, several automatic controller parameter tuning approaches emerged, which usually model the performance function as a Gaussian process, and complete the automatic tuning procedure via Bayesian optimization. However, the existing approaches rarely consider the time-varying feature of the system performance, which is practical in many scenarios, induced by the unmodeled interactions between the system and the environment. In this paper, we take both of the dynamic model uncertainty and the controller parameters uncertainty into account, and tune them to find a global optimal choice for minimizing the time-varying control costs, which is modeled by the time-varying Gaussian process. We provide a novel algorithm, named as time-varying controller optimization. We validate our approach on synthetic simulation and real experiment, respectively. In this paper, a relay based network is considered where the source transmits confidential message to the destination via a nonregenerative relay. Due to the fact that the relay is unidentified, and thus may wiretap the relayed message from source to destination. In this regard, two new half-duplex nonorthogonal amplify-and-forward (NAF) secure communication protocols are proposed, with different assumptions on the transmission ability of the destination, i.e., NAF-I for destination without transmission ability and NAF-II for destination with transmission ability. We separately derive the sufficient and necessary conditions to yield positive secrecy rate for these protocols under fixed source/destination transmission power, and discuss their joint power allocation that maximizes the system secrecy rate. Despite the nonconvexity of the considered power allocation problems, alternative optimization approach is proved useful in dealing with these problems, and the corresponding algorithms are proposed. We further prove the convergence of the proposed algorithms and analyze their complexity. The discussion is also extended to the orthogonal amplify-and-forward (OAF) based protocols, i.e., OAF-I or OAF-II, for comparison purpose. Our numerical results demonstrate the gain of the secrecy rate performance of the proposed NAF protocols over existing transmission protocols, and also verify the effectiveness of the designed alternative optimization algorithms. Cognitive small-cell networks have great potential in improving spectrum efficiency and mitigating inter-cell interference. Comprehensively classifying the channel states in cognitive small-cell networks is important for efficiently reusing the spectrum bands that are licensed to a macrocell. In this paper, we investigate channel state classification in cognitive small-cell networks with multilevels of transmission powers, including occupation detection of spectrum bands and transmission power classification of a macrocell base station (MBS). Specifically, two scenarios including a priori known signaling features and unknown signaling features are both studied. For the former scenario, we propose an optimal spectrum sensing and power classification algorithm, based on coherent classification, to achieve accurate sensing performance by fully exploiting the inherent information of the signaling features. Optimal sensing threshold and decision regions are derived for detecting and classifying the transmission power of the MBS. For the scenario without signaling features, a generic spectrum sensing and power classification algorithm is proposed based on noncoherent classification with low implementation complexity. A new performance metric, i.e., classification probability, is introduced to comprehensively evaluate the classification capability of the proposed algorithms. Multiple linear constraint water filling problem (MLWFP) is solved innovatively in this paper, in which powers allotted to the $T$ resources of the transmitting user maximize the capacity of the transmitting user while controlling the interference to all the surrounded users of the wireless network. MLWFP is solved previously using iterative algorithms that take more number of iterations, thus, increasing the computational complexity. Unlike prior algorithms, the uniqueness of the proposed algorithm is in detecting the tight bounds for the number of nonzero powers $S$. Subsequently, $S$ is calculated from its bounds. This makes it possible for the proposed algorithm to compute $S$ nonzero powers alone (using the closed-form solution), whereas all the prior algorithms find powers iteratively for all $T$ ( $>$ $S$ ) resources. Thus, the worst case computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced manyfold and is considerably lower than that of the prior algorithms by a factor of $O(T^2)$. The rapidly growing mobile traffic calls for higher quality of service (QoS) and lower on-grid energy cost. Integrating energy harvesting to small-cell networks (SCNs) with caching has been regarded as a promising solution. However, considering the limited resources of the small-cell base stations (SBSs), how to cache contents and serve the mobile users (MUs) is a crucial problem. In this paper, we jointly design a green content caching and mobile user–base station (MU-BS) association mechanism in the SCNs, where the number of MUs’ content requests served by the SBSs is maximized. This mechanism maximizes the number of requests handled by the SBSs under the constraints of the available energy and backhaul capacity of the SBSs, while concurrently ensures the QoS of the MUs. First, the joint optimization problem is formulated, which is NP-hard. To decrease the complexity of the problem, we divide it into two subproblems: MU-BS association and content caching. But when the number of SBSs is large, these two subproblems cannot be efficiently solved by the conventional centralized approaches. Thus, we construct a two-dimensional-action weakly acyclic game to optimize these two subproblems distributedly and iteratively, in which the existence of the two-dimensional-action Nash equilibrium has been proved. Finally, we propose a two-dimensional iteration algorithm to solve the problem. This paper aims at solving two classes of energy efficiency (EE) maximization problems in multiple channels wireless communication systems. First, the EE maximization problem with sum power constraint is solved based on the geometric water-filling approach; and second, the approach is extended into the EE maximization problem with additional least throughput requirement constraint. Our proposed algorithms make use of the water-filling structure of the optimal solution and provide exact and computation efficient solution to the energy-efficient power allocation problems. The proposed algorithms also have excellent scalability, which is applicable for large-scale wireless communication systems. Optimality of the proposed algorithms is strictly proved, and the proposed algorithms only require low-degree polynomial computational complexity. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in offloading the 3GPP LTE data by using device-to-device (D2D) communications between devices. However, the peer discovering is challenging, especially in the indoor environment, since traditional users use a cellular signal to find peers, leading to incurring interference to other cellular users. In this paper, we propose ROOMMATEs, a novel approach for indoor peer discovery process, which is the enabler for indoor D2D communications in long term evolution (LTE) networks. It is a centralized approach utilizing, but not limited to, the ubiquitous WiFi network/femtocell network, combining with eNodeB in order to deliver the best results. ROOMMATEs is an unsupervised, yet energy efficient algorithm that can find surrounding user equipments (UEs) while minimizing interference and consuming much less energy. Based on the results, ROOMMATEs proves to be highly energy efficient, saving on average 24% per UE and improving signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio in order of tens of decibels compared to other approaches. Moreover, ROOMMATEs provides indoor place identification for UEs with high accuracy using a small number of observations. Adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming has recently been deployed in vehicular networks (VNs) to deal with the time-varying channels due to reasons such as high user mobility. In this paper, we propose a two time-scale dynamic caching scheme for ABR streaming in VNs, in which the video quality adaptation at the application layer and cache placement at the BS are performed at a larger time-scale while the video data transmission at the physical layer is performed at a smaller time-scale. Lyapunov optimization technique is employed to maximize the time-averaged network reward, which is the weighted sum of video quality and backhaul saving. Without the prior knowledge of channel statistics, we develop a dynamic cache algorithm (DCA) to obtain the video quality adaptation, cache placement, and radio bandwidth allocation decisions. For the arbitrary sample path of channel states, we compare the network reward achieved by DCA with that achieved by an optimal $T$ -slot lookahead algorithm, i.e., the knowledge of the future channel path over an interval of length $T$ time slots. In a pricing-based spectrum trading market, an interesting issue is to study how secondary users make their selections in a rational manner when there are available spectrum of different qualities in the market. In this case, primary systems inherently require a precise pricing strategy to maximize their profits especially when the secondary users’ selection preferences are not uniform nor predictable during the dynamic access. In this paper, we propose a novel spectrum pricing mechanism for primary systems by taking into account the selection preferences of heterogeneous secondary users and quality diversity of leased spectrum caused by different interference levels and channel fading characteristics. Our work mainly focuses on exploring the optimal pricing solution in the case that the selection preference of secondary buyers is stochastic. In the proposed system model, the spectrum to be leased is divided into a series of uniform subchannels of various qualities for spectrum trading. We analyze the impact of secondary users’ preference on spectrum trading and propose an iterative algorithm for spectrum pricing by introducing the Hotelling model to describe the relationship between the spectrum diversity and the primary system's utility. Proofs of the integrability of the utility function and existence of Nash equilibrium used in the proposed algorithm are provided. In this paper, we study the energy efficiency (EE) optimization for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in multiple-input-multiple-output two-way amplify-and-forward relay networks, where the energy-constrained relay harvests energy from two sources’ signals by power splitting (PS) scheme to forward the information of two sources. Our objective is to jointly design the sources and relay precoding matrices and the PS ratio to maximize the EE of the network, under the transmit power constraints at sources and relay and the minimum spectral efficiency requirement. We transform the nonconvex precoding and PS design problem into a difference of convex programming and propose an efficient iterative algorithm based on the constrained concave convex procedure to obtain a local optimum. To reduce computational complexity, we propose a generalized singular value decomposition based channel diagonalization scheme to simplify the optimization into a joint source and relay power allocation problem. The alternating optimization method is employed to solve this problem and a suboptimal solution to the EE maximization problem is obtained.
