Within the domain of architectural urban informatization, the automated precision recognition of two-dimensional paper schematics emerges as a pivotal technical challenge. Recognition methods traditionally employed frequently encounter limitations due to the fluctuating quality of architectural drawings and the bounds of current image processing methodologies, inhibiting the realization of high accuracy. The research delineates an innovative framework that synthesizes refined semantic segmentation algorithms with image processing techniques and precise coordinate identification methods, with the objective of enhancing the accuracy and operational efficiency in the identification of architectural elements. A meticulously curated data set, featuring 13 principal categories of building and structural components, facilitated the comprehensive training and assessment of two disparate deep learning models. The empirical findings reveal that these algorithms attained mean intersection over union (MIoU) values of 96.44% and 98.01% on the evaluation data set, marking a substantial enhancement in performance relative to traditional approaches. In conjunction, the framework's integration of the Hough Transform with SQL Server technology has significantly reduced the coordinate detection error rates for linear and circular elements to below 0.1% and 0.15%, respectively. This investigation not only accomplishes the efficacious transition from analog two-dimensional paper drawings to their digital counterparts, but also assures the precise identification and localization of essential architectural components within the digital image coordinate framework. As generative NLP can now produce content nearly indistinguishable from human writing, it is becoming difficult to identify genuine research contributions in academic writing and scientific publications. Moreover, information in machine-generated text can be factually wrong or even entirely fabricated. In this work, we introduce a novel benchmark dataset containing human-written and machine-generated scientific papers from SCIgen, GPT-2, GPT-3, ChatGPT, and Galactica, as well as papers co-created by humans and ChatGPT. We also experiment with several types of classifiers—linguistic-based and transformer-based—for detecting the authorship of scientific text. A strong focus is put on generalization capabilities and explainability to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of these detectors. By utilizing smart contracts, which are essentially scripts that are anchored in a decentralized manner on blockchains or other similar infrastructures, it is possible to make the execution of predetermined procedures visible to the outside world. The programmability of previously unrealized assets, such as money, and the automation of previously manual business logic are both made possible by smart contracts. This revelation inspired us to analyze smart contracts in blockchain technologies written in English between 2012 and 2022. The scope of research is limited to the journal. Reviews, conferences, book chapters, theses, monographs, and interview-based works, and also articles in the press, are eliminated. The use of large language models (LLMs) is now spreading in several areas of research and development. This work is concerned with systematically reviewing LLMs' involvement in engineering education. Starting from a general research question, two queries were used to select 370 papers from the literature. Filtering them through several inclusion/exclusion criteria led to the selection of 20 papers. These were investigated based on eight dimensions to identify areas of engineering disciplines that involve LLMs, where they are most present, how this involvement takes place, and which LLM-based tools are used, if any. Addressing these key issues allowed three more specific research questions to be answered, offering a clear overview of the current involvement of LLMs in engineering education. The research outcomes provide insights into the potential and challenges of LLMs in transforming engineering education, contributing to its responsible and effective future implementation. This review's outcomes could help address the best ways to involve LLMs in engineering education activities and measure their effectiveness as time progresses. Light-field images (LFIs) are gaining increased attention within the field of 3D imaging, virtual reality, and digital refocusing, owing to their wealth of spatial and angular information. The escalating volume of LFI data poses challenges in terms of storage and transmission. To address this problem, this paper introduces an MSHPE (most-similar hierarchical prediction encoding) structure based on light-field multi-view images. By systematically exploring the similarities among sub-views, our structure obtains residual views through the subtraction of the encoded view from its corresponding reference view. Regarding the encoding process, this paper implements a new encoding scheme to process all residual views, achieving lossless compression. High-efficiency video coding (HEVC) is applied to encode select residual views, thereby achieving lossy compression. Furthermore, the introduced structure is conceptualized as a layered coding scheme, enabling progressive transmission and showing good random access performance. Experimental results demonstrate the superior compression performance attained by encoding residual views according to the proposed structure, outperforming alternative structures. Notably, when HEVC is employed for encoding residual views, significant bit savings are observed compared to the direct encoding of original views. This paper provides empirical evidence using two studies to explain the primary factors facilitating electronic health record (EHR) systems adoption through the lens of the resource advantage theory. We aim to address the following research questions: What are the main organizational antecedents of EHR implementation? What is the role of monitoring in EHR system implementation? What are the current themes and people's attitudes toward EHR systems? This paper includes two empirical studies. Study 1 presents a research model based on data collected from four different archival datasets. Drawing upon the resource advantage theory, this paper uses archival data from 200 Texas hospitals, thus mitigating potential response bias and enhancing the validity of the findings. Study 2 includes a text analysis of 5154 textual data, sentiment analysis, and topic modeling. Study 1's findings reveal that joint ventures and ownership are the two main enablers of adopting EHR systems in 200 Texas hospitals. Moreover, the results offer a moderating role of monitoring in strengthening the relationship between joint-venture capability and the implementation of EHR systems. Study 2's results indicate a positive attitude toward EHR systems. The U.S. was unique in the sample due to its slower adoption of EHR systems than other developed countries. Physician burnout also emerged as a significant concern in the context of EHR adoption. Topic modeling identified three themes: training, healthcare interoperability, and organizational barriers. In a multimethod design, this paper contributes to prior work by offering two new EHR antecedents: hospital ownership and joint-venture capability. In response to the challenges introduced by global warming and increased eutrophication, this paper presents an innovative modeling and simulation (M&S)-driven model for developing an automated inland water monitoring system. This system is grounded in a layered Internet of Things (IoT) architecture and seamlessly integrates cloud, fog, and edge computing to enable sophisticated, real-time environmental surveillance and prediction of harmful algal and cyanobacterial blooms (HACBs). Utilizing autonomous boats as mobile data collection units within the edge layer, the system efficiently tracks algae and cyanobacteria proliferation and relays critical data upward through the architecture. In South Korea, the rapid proliferation of smartphones has led to an uptick in messenger phishing attacks associated with electronic communication financial scams. In response to this, various phishing detection algorithms have been proposed. However, collecting messenger phishing data poses challenges due to concerns about its potential use in criminal activities. Consequently, a Korean phishing dataset can be composed of imbalanced data, where the number of general messages might outnumber the phishing ones. This class imbalance problem and data scarcity can lead to overfitting issues, making it difficult to achieve high performance. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a phishing messages classification method using Biased Discriminant Analysis without resorting to data augmentation techniques. In this paper, by optimizing the parameters for BDA, we achieved exceptionally high performances in the phishing messages classification experiment, with 95.45% for Recall and 96.85% for the BA metric. Moreover, when compared with other algorithms, the proposed method demonstrated robustness against overfitting due to the class imbalance problem and exhibited minimal performance disparity between training and testing datasets. Quantum information mobilizes the description of quantum systems, their states, and their behavior. Since a measurement postulate introduced by von Neumann in 1932, if a quantum system has been prepared in two different mixed states represented by the same density operator ρ , these preparations are said to have led to the same mixture. For more than 50 years, there has been a lack of consensus about this postulate. In a 2011 article, considering variances of spin components, Fratini and Hayrapetyan tried to show that this postulate is unjustified. The aim of the present paper is to discuss major points in this 2011 article and in their reply to a 2012 paper by Bodor and Diosi claiming that their analysis was irrelevant. Facing some ambiguities or inconsistencies in the 2011 paper and in the reply, we first try to guess their aim, establish results useful in this context, and finally discuss the use or misuse of several concepts implied in this debate. Cloud providers offer various purchasing options to enable users to tailor their costs according to their specific requirements, including on-demand, reserved instances, and spot instances. On-demand and spot instances satisfy short-term workloads, whereas reserved instances fulfill long-term instances. However, there are workloads that fall outside of either long-term or short-term categories. Consequently, there is a notable absence of services specifically tailored for medium-term workloads. On-demand services, while offering flexibility, often come with high costs. Spot instances, though cost-effective, carry the risk of termination. Reserved instances, while stable and less expensive, may have a remaining period that extends beyond the duration of users' tasks. This gap underscores the need for solutions that address the unique requirements and challenges associated with medium-term workloads in the cloud computing landscape. This paper introduces a new cloud broker that introduces IaaS services for medium-term workloads. On one hand, this broker strategically reserves resources from providers, and on the other hand, it interacts with users. Its interaction with users is twofold. It collects users' preferences regarding commitment term for medium-term workloads and then transforms the leased resources based on commitment term, aligning with the requirements of most users. To ensure profitability, the broker sells these services utilizing an auction algorithm. Hence, in this paper, an auction algorithm is introduced and developed, which treats cloud services as virtual assets and integrates the depreciation over time. The findings affirm the lack of services that fulfill medium workloads while ensuring the financial viabilty and profitability of the broker, given that the estimated return on investment (ROI) is acceptable. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic brain disorder affecting millions worldwide. It occurs when brain cells that produce dopamine, a chemical controlling movement, die or become damaged. This leads to PD, which causes problems with movement, balance, and posture. Early detection is crucial to slow its progression and improve the quality of life for PD patients. This paper proposes a handwriting-based prediction approach combining a cosine annealing scheduler with deep transfer learning. It utilizes the NIATS dataset, which contains handwriting samples from individuals with and without PD, to evaluate six different models: VGG16, VGG19, ResNet18, ResNet50, ResNet101, and Vit. This paper compares the performance of these models based on three metrics: accuracy, precision, and F1 score. As it concerns remote laboratories (RLs) for teaching microcontroller programming, the related literature reveals several common characteristics and a common architecture. Our search of the literature was constrained to papers published in the period of 2020–2023 specifically on remote laboratories related to the subject of teaching microcontroller programming of the Arduino family. The objective of this search is to present, on the one hand, the extent to which the RL platform from the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU-RLP) for Arduino microcontroller programming conforms to this common architecture and, on the other hand, how it extends this architecture with new features for monitoring and assessing users' activities over remote labs in the context of pervasive and supervised learning. The HMU-RLP hosts a great number of experiments that can be practiced by RL users in the form of different scenarios provided by teachers as activities that users can perform in their self-learning process or assigned as exercises complementary to the theoretical part of a course. More importantly, it provides three types of assessments of the code users program during their experimentation with RLs. The first type monitors each action users perform over the web page offered by the RL. The second type monitors the activities of users at the hardware level. To this end, a shadow microcontroller is used that monitors the pins of the microcontroller programmed by the users. The third type automatically assesses the code uploaded by the users, checking its similarity with the prototype code uploaded by the instructors. A trained AI model is used to this end. For the assessments provided by the HMU-RLP, the experience API (xAPI) standard is exploited to store users' learning analytics (LAs). The LAs can be processed by the instructors for the students' evaluation and personalized learning. The xAPI reporting and visualization tools used in our prototype RLP implementation are also presented in the paper. The distributed denial of service attack poses a significant threat to network security. Despite the availability of various methods for detecting DDoS attacks, the challenge remains in creating real-time detectors with minimal computational overhead. Additionally, the effectiveness of new detection methods depends heavily on well-constructed datasets. This paper addresses the critical DDoS dataset creation and evaluation domain, focusing on the cloud network. After conducting an in-depth analysis of 16 publicly available datasets, this research identifies 15 shortcomings across various dimensions, emphasizing the need for a new approach to dataset creation. Building upon this understanding, this paper introduces a new public DDoS dataset named BCCC-cPacket-Cloud-DDoS-2024. This dataset is meticulously crafted, addressing challenges identified in previous datasets through a cloud infrastructure featuring over eight benign user activities and 17 DDoS attack scenarios. Also, a Benign User Profiler (BUP) tool has been designed and developed to generate benign user network traffic based on a normal user behavior profile. We manually label the dataset and extract over 300 features from the network and transport layers of the traffic flows using NTLFlowLyzer. The experimental phase involves identifying an optimal feature set using three distinct algorithms: ANOVA, information gain, and extra tree. Finally, this paper proposes a multi-layered DDoS detection model and evaluates its performance using the generated dataset to cover the main issues of the traditional approaches. The Flutter framework with Dart programming allows developers to effortlessly build applications for both web and mobile from a single codebase. It enables efficient conversions to native codes for mobile apps and optimized JavaScript for web browsers. Since utilizing a wide range of widgets in Flutter ensures consistent experiences on various devices for users, it becomes crucial in programming education by providing a unified environment for learning app development while reducing the need for platform-specific knowledge. However, the setup of the Flutter environment is challenging for novice students due to its multiple steps, such as installing dependencies and configuring environments. To support independent learning for these students, it is essential to simplify the setup by providing user-friendly instructions and automated tools. In this paper, we present a Docker-based environment for Flutter app developments across Windows, Linux, and Mac through Visual Studio Code, ensuring a unified learning experience. This paper aims to simplify complex configurations and address the obstacles encountered by students when initiating Flutter projects. For the evaluation, we prepared three simple Flutter projects along with the setup environment in a Docker container. Then, we asked 24 Master's students at Okayama University, Japan, to install the environment and modify the source codes in the projects independently by following the given instructions. The scheduling of disassembly lines is of great importance to achieve optimized productivity. In this paper, we address the Hybrid Disassembly Line Balancing Problem that combines linear disassembly lines and U-shaped disassembly lines, considering multi-skilled workers, and targeting profit and carbon emissions. In contrast to common approaches in reinforcement learning that typically employ weighting strategies to solve multi-objective problems, our approach innovatively incorporates non-dominated ranking directly into the reward function. The exploration of Pareto frontier solutions or better solutions is moderated by comparing performance between solutions and dynamically adjusting rewards based on the occurrence of repeated solutions. The experimental results show that the multi-objective Advantage Actor-Critic algorithm based on Pareto optimization exhibits superior performance in terms of metrics superiority in the comparison of six experimental cases of different scales, with an excellent metrics comparison rate of 70%. In some of the experimental cases in this paper, the solutions produced by the multi-objective Advantage Actor-Critic algorithm show some advantages over other popular algorithms such as the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient Algorithm, the Soft Actor-Critic Algorithm, and the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II. Over the last few years, a plethora of papers presenting machine-learning-based approaches for intrusion detection have been published. However, the majority of those papers do not compare their results with a proper baseline of a signature-based intrusion detection system, thus violating good machine learning practices. In order to evaluate the pros and cons of the machine-learning-based approach, we replicated a research study that uses a deep neural network model for intrusion detection. The results of our replicated research study expose several systematic problems with the used datasets and evaluation methods. In our experiments, a signature-based intrusion detection system with a minimal setup was able to outperform the tested model even under small traffic changes. Testing the replicated neural network on a new dataset recorded in the same environment with the same attacks using the same tools showed that the accuracy of the neural network dropped to 54%. In this paper, we have developed the SEMAR (Smart Environmental Monitoring and Analytics in Real-Time) IoT application server platform for fast deployments of IoT application systems. It provides various integration capabilities for the collection, display, and analysis of sensor data on a single platform. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become very popular and widely used in various applications including IoT. To support this growth, the integration of AI into SEMAR is essential to enhance its capabilities after identifying the current trends of applicable AI technologies in IoT applications. In this paper, we first provide a comprehensive review of IoT applications using AI techniques in the literature. They cover predictive analytics, image classification, object detection, text spotting, auditory perception, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and collaborative AI. Next, we identify the characteristics of each technique by considering the key parameters, such as software requirements, input/output (I/O) data types, processing methods, and computations. Third, we design the integration of AI techniques into SEMAR based on the findings. Finally, we discuss use cases of SEMAR for IoT applications with AI techniques. Recent technological developments have enabled computers to identify and categorize facial expressions to determine a person's emotional state in an image or a video. This process, called "Facial Expression Recognition (FER)", has become one of the most popular research areas in computer vision. In recent times, deep FER systems have primarily concentrated on addressing two significant challenges: the problem of overfitting due to limited training data availability, and the presence of expression-unrelated variations, including illumination, head pose, image resolution, and identity bias. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is provided on deep FER, encompassing algorithms and datasets that offer insights into these intrinsic problems. Initially, this paper presents a detailed timeline showcasing the evolution of methods and datasets in deep facial expression recognition (FER). This timeline illustrates the progression and development of the techniques and data resources used in FER. Then, a comprehensive review of FER methods is introduced, including the basic principles of FER (components such as preprocessing, feature extraction and classification, and methods, etc.) from the pro-deep learning era (traditional methods using handcrafted features, i.e., SVM and HOG, etc.) to the deep learning era. Moreover, a brief introduction is provided related to the benchmark datasets (there are two categories: controlled environments (lab) and uncontrolled environments (in the wild)) used to evaluate different FER methods and a comparison of different FER models. Existing deep neural networks and related training strategies designed for FER, based on static images and dynamic image sequences, are discussed. Purpose: The purpose of this research paper was to analyse the counterstrategies to mitigate cybersecurity challenges using organisational learning loops amidst major crises in the Higher Education and Research Sector (HERS). The authors proposed the learning loop framework revealing several counterstrategies to mitigate cybersecurity issues in HERS. The counterstrategies are explored, and their implications for research and practice are discussed. Methodology: The qualitative methodology was adopted, and semi-structured interviews with cybersecurity experts and top managers were conducted. Results: This exploratory paper proposed the learning loop framework revealing introducing new policies and procedures, changing existing systems, partnership with other companies, integrating new software, improving employee learning, enhancing security, and monitoring and evaluating security measures as significant counterstrategies to ensure the cyber-safe working environment in HERS. These counterstrategies will help to tackle cybersecurity in HERS, not only during the current major crisis but also in the future. Implications: The outcomes provide insightful implications for both theory and practice. This study proposes a learning framework that prioritises counterstrategies to mitigate cybersecurity challenges in HERS amidst a major crisis. The proposed model can help HERS be more efficient in mitigating cybersecurity issues in future crises. The counterstrategies can also be tested, adopted, and implemented by practitioners working in other sectors to mitigate cybersecurity issues during and after major crises. In the realm of Parkinson's Disease (PD) research, the integration of wearable sensor data with personal health records (PHR) has emerged as a pivotal avenue for patient alerting and monitoring. This study delves into the complex domain of PD patient care, with a specific emphasis on harnessing the potential of wearable sensors to capture, represent and semantically analyze crucial movement data and knowledge. The primary objective is to enhance the assessment of PD patients by establishing a robust foundation for personalized health insights through the development of Personal Health Knowledge Graphs (PHKGs) and the employment of personal health Graph Neural Networks (PHGNNs) that utilize PHKGs. The objective is to formalize the representation of related integrated data, unified sensor and PHR data in higher levels of abstraction, i.e., in a PHKG, to facilitate interoperability and support rule-based high-level event recognition such as patient's missing dose or falling. This paper, extending our previous related work, presents the Wear4PDmove ontology in detail and evaluates the ontology within the development of an experimental PHKG. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the integration and evaluation of PHKG within the implementation of a Graph Neural Network (GNN). This work emphasizes the importance of integrating PD-related data for monitoring and alerting patients with appropriate notifications. This paper aims to provide discernment toward establishing a general framework, dedicated to data analysis and forecasting in smart buildings. It constitutes an industrial return of experience from an industrialist specializing in IoT supported by the academic world. With the necessary improvement of energy efficiency, discernment is paramount for facility managers to optimize daily operations and prioritize renovation work in the building sector. With the scale of buildings and the complexity of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, the use of artificial intelligence is deemed the cheapest tool, holding the highest potential, even if it requires IoT sensors and a deluge of data to establish genuine models. However, the wide variety of buildings, users, and data hinders the development of industrial solutions, as specific studies often lack relevance to analyze other buildings, possibly with different types of data monitored. The relevance of the modeling can also disappear over time, as buildings are dynamic systems evolving with their use. In this paper, we propose to study the forecasting ability of the widely used Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network algorithm, which is well-designed for time series modeling, across an instrumented building. In this way, we considered the consistency of the performances for several issues as we compared to the cases with no prediction, which is lacking in the literature. The insight provided let us examine the quality of AI models and the quality of data needed in forecasting tasks. Finally, we deduced that efficient models and smart choices about data allow meaningful insight into developing time series modeling frameworks for smart buildings. For reproducibility concerns, we also provide our raw data, which came from one "real" smart building, as well as significant information regarding this building. In summary, our research aims to develop a methodology for exploring, analyzing, and modeling data from the smart buildings sector. Based on our experiment on forecasting temperature sensor measurements, we found that a bigger AI model (1) does not always imply a longer time in training and (2) can have little impact on accuracy and (3) using more features is tied to data processing order. The richness and complexity of consent present challenges to those aiming to make related contributions to computer information systems (CIS). This paper aims to support consent-related research in CIS by simplifying the understanding of existing literature and facilitating the framing of future consent management research. Firstly, it outlines existing consent management research and shows how it relates to the literature in law and ethics. Secondly, it presents some fundamental explanations and definitions that must be considered for further contributions to the consent management literature. Thirdly, it identifies five types of consent-related stances often taken in the consent management literature and explains each in some detail. Fourth, it explains one of the identified types of stances (i.e., the disciplinary stance) by expanding on the links between consent as a legal construct and its ethical counterpart. Fifth, considering another of the identified types of stances (i.e., the theoretical stances normally adopted in the consent management literature), the paper presents the key requirements for legally and ethically effective consent management based on three prominent theories. Brainstorming is an important part of the design thinking process since it encourages creativity and innovation through bringing together diverse viewpoints. However, traditional brainstorming practices face challenges such as the management of large volumes of ideas. To address this issue, this paper introduces a decision support system that employs the BERTopic model to automate the brainstorming process, which enhances the categorization of ideas and the generation of coherent topics from textual data. The dataset for our study was assembled from a brainstorming session on "scholar dropouts", where ideas were captured on Post-it notes, digitized through an optical character recognition (OCR) model, and enhanced using data augmentation with a language model, GPT-3.5, to ensure robustness. To assess the performance of our system, we employed both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Quantitative evaluations were conducted independently across various parameters, while qualitative assessments focused on the relevance and alignment of keywords with human-classified topics during brainstorming sessions. Our findings demonstrate that BERTopic outperforms traditional LDA models in generating semantically coherent topics. Diagnosing the financial health of companies and their performance is currently one of the basic questions that attracts the attention of researchers and experts in the field of finance and management. In this study, we focused on the proposal of models for measuring the financial health and performance of businesses. These models were built for companies doing business within the Slovak construction industry. Construction companies are identified by their higher liquidity and different capital structure compared to other industries. Therefore, simple classifiers are not able to effectively predict their financial health. In this paper, we investigated whether boosting ensembles are a suitable alternative for performance analysis. The result of the research is the finding that deep learning is a suitable approach aimed at measuring the financial health and performance of the analyzed sample of companies. The developed models achieved perfect classification accuracy when using the AdaBoost and Gradient-boosting algorithms. Artificial intelligence (AI) has witnessed an exponential increase in use in various applications. Recently, the academic community started to research and inject new AI-based approaches to provide solutions to traditional software-engineering problems. However, a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the current status needs to be included. To close the above gap, synthetic knowledge synthesis was used to induce the research landscape of the contemporary research literature on the use of AI in software engineering. The synthesis resulted in 15 research categories and 5 themes—namely, natural language processing in software engineering, use of artificial intelligence in the management of the software development life cycle, use of machine learning in fault/defect prediction and effort estimation, employment of deep learning in intelligent software engineering and code management, and mining software repositories to improve software quality. The most productive country was China (n = 2042), followed by the United States (n = 1193), India (n = 934), Germany (n = 445), and Canada (n = 381). A high percentage (n = 47.4%) of papers were funded, showing the strong interest in this research topic. The convergence of AI and software engineering can significantly reduce the required resources, improve the quality, enhance the user experience, and improve the well-being of software developers. In the field of visualization, understanding users' analytical reasoning is important for evaluating the effectiveness of visualization applications. Several studies have been conducted to capture and analyze user interactions to comprehend this reasoning process. However, few have successfully linked these interactions to users' reasoning processes. This paper introduces an approach that addresses the limitation by correlating semantic user interactions with analysis decisions using an interactive wire transaction analysis system and a visual state transition matrix, both designed as visual analytics applications. The system enables interactive analysis for evaluating financial fraud in wire transactions. It also allows mapping captured user interactions and analytical decisions back onto the visualization to reveal their decision differences. The visual state transition matrix further aids in understanding users' analytical flows, revealing their decision-making processes. Classification machine learning algorithms are applied to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach in understanding users' analytical reasoning process by connecting the captured semantic user interactions to their decisions (i.e., suspicious, not suspicious, and inconclusive) on wire transactions. With the algorithms, an average of 72% accuracy is determined to classify the semantic user interactions. For classifying individual decisions, the average accuracy is 70%. Notably, the accuracy for classifying 'inconclusive' decisions is 83%. Channel estimation accuracy significantly affects the performance of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In the literature, there are quite a few channel estimation methods. However, the performances of these methods deteriorate considerably when the wireless channels suffer from nonlinear distortions and interferences. Machine learning (ML) shows great potential for solving nonparametric problems. This paper proposes ML-based channel estimation methods for systems with comb-type pilot patterns and random pilot symbols, such as ATSC 3.0. We compare their performances with conventional channel estimations in ATSC 3.0 systems for linear and nonlinear channel models. We also evaluate the robustness of the ML-based methods against channel model mismatch and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) mismatch. The results show that the ML-based channel estimations achieve good mean squared error (MSE) performance for linear and nonlinear channels if the channel statistics used for the training stage match those of the deployment stage. Otherwise, the ML estimation models may overfit the training channel, leading to poor deployment performance. The design of automotive human–machine interfaces (HMIs) for global consumers' needs to cater to a broad spectrum of drivers. This paper comprises benchmark studies and explores how users from international markets—Germany, China, and the United States—engage with the same automotive HMI. In real driving scenarios, N = 301 participants (premium vehicle owners) completed several tasks using different interaction modalities. The multi-method approach included both self-report measures to assess preference and satisfaction through well-established questionnaires and observational measures, namely experimenter ratings, to capture interaction performance. We observed a trend towards lower preference ratings in the Chinese sample. Further, interaction performance differed across the user groups, with self-reported preference not consistently aligning with observed performance. This dissociation accentuates the importance of integrating both measures in user studies. By employing benchmark data, we provide insights into varied market-based perspectives on automotive HMIs. Within the literary domain, genres function as fundamental organizing concepts that provide readers, publishers, and academics with a unified framework. Genres are discrete categories that are distinguished by common stylistic, thematic, and structural components. They facilitate the categorization process and improve our understanding of a wide range of literary expressions. In this paper, we introduce a new dataset for genre classification of Russian books, covering 11 literary genres. We also perform dataset evaluation for the tasks of binary and multi-class genre identification. Through extensive experimentation and analysis, we explore the effectiveness of different text representations, including stylometric features, in genre classification. Our findings clarify the challenges present in classifying Russian literature by genre, revealing insights into the performance of different models across various genres. The emerging digitalization in today's industrial environments allows manufacturers to store online knowledge about production and use it to make better informed management decisions. This paper proposes a multi-agent framework enhanced with digital twin (DT) for production scheduling and optimization. Decentralized scheduling agents interact to efficiently manage the work allocation in different segments of production. A DT is used to evaluate the performance of different scheduling decisions and to avoid potential risks and bottlenecks. Production managers can supervise the system's decision-making processes and manually regulate them online. The multi-agent system (MAS) uses asset administration shells (AASs) for data modelling and communication, enabling interoperability and scalability. The framework was deployed and tested in an industrial pilot coming from the bicycle production industry, optimizing and controlling the short-term production schedule of the different departments. The evaluation resulted in a higher production rate, thus achieving higher production volume in a shorter time span. Imitation learning has shown promise for autonomous driving, but suffers from covariate shift, where the policy performs poorly in unseen environments. DAgger is a popular approach that addresses this by leveraging expert demonstrations. However, DAgger's frequent visits to sub-optimal states can lead to several challenges. This paper proposes a novel DAgger framework that integrates Bayesian uncertainty estimation via mean field variational inference (MFVI) to address this issue. MFVI provides better-calibrated uncertainty estimates compared to prior methods. During training, the framework identifies both uncertain and critical states, querying the expert only for these states. This targeted data collection reduces the burden on the expert and improves data efficiency. Sustainable mobility is one of the main challenges on a global level. In this context, the emerging Mobility as a Service (MaaS) plays an important role in the mobility of people. This paper investigates the main enabling factors for implementing the MaaS paradigm, with a specific focus on the level of acceptance of this new technology. To achieve this objective, the proposed methodology for measuring the potential MaaS acceptance is based on a set of pilot surveys. The methodology integrates motivational surveys with Stated and Revealed Preference (SP, RP) and Technology Acceptance Models (TAM). The collected data are processed to obtain indicators that measure the potential level of MaaS acceptance. The main results of the two pilot experiments are illustrated by referring to urban and extra-urban mobility with or without physical barriers. The research and management of Industry 4.0 increasingly relies on accurate real-time quality data to apply efficient algorithms for predictive maintenance. Currently, Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWANs) offer potential advantages in monitoring tasks for predictive maintenance. However, their applicability requires improvements in aspects such as energy consumption, transmission range, data rate and constant quality of service. Commonly used battery-operated IIoT devices have several limitations in their adoption in large facilities or heat-intensive industries (iron and steel, cement, etc.). In these cases, the self-heating nodes together with the appropriate low-power processing platform and industrial sensors are aligned with the requirements and real-time criteria required for industrial monitoring. From an environmental point of view, the carbon footprint associated with human activity leads to a steady rise in global average temperature. Most of the gases emitted into the atmosphere are due to these heat-intensive industries. In fact, much of the energy consumed by industries is dissipated in the form of waste heat. With this scenario, it makes sense to build heat transformation collection systems as guarantors of battery-free self-powered IIoT devices. Thermal energy harvesters work on the physical basis of the Seebeck effect. In this way, this paper gathers the methodology that standardizes the modelling and simulation of waste heat recovery systems for IoT nodes, gathering energy from any hot surface, such as a pipe or chimney. The statistical analysis is carried out with the data obtained from two different IoT architectures showing a good correlation between model simulation and prototype behaviour. Structured science summaries or research contributions using properties or dimensions beyond traditional keywords enhance science findability. Current methods, such as those used by the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG), involve manually curating properties to describe research papers' contributions in a structured manner, but this is labor-intensive and inconsistent among human domain-expert curators. We propose using Large Language Models (LLMs) to automatically suggest these properties. However, it is essential to assess the readiness of LLMs like GPT-3.5, Llama 2, and Mistral for this task before their application. Our study performs a comprehensive comparative analysis between the ORKG's manually curated properties and those generated by the aforementioned state-of-the-art LLMs. We evaluate LLM performance from four unique perspectives: semantic alignment with and deviation from ORKG properties, fine-grained property mapping accuracy, SciNCL embedding-based cosine similarity, and expert surveys comparing manual annotations with LLM outputs. These evaluations occur within a multidisciplinary science setting. Overall, LLMs show potential as recommendation systems for structuring science, but further fine-tuning is recommended to improve their alignment with scientific tasks and mimicry of human expertise. The growing number of vehicles on the roads has resulted in several challenges, including increased accident rates, fuel consumption, pollution, travel time, and driving stress. However, recent advancements in intelligent vehicle technologies, such as sensors and communication networks, have the potential to revolutionize road traffic and address these challenges. In particular, the concept of platooning for autonomous vehicles, where they travel in groups at high speeds with minimal distances between them, has been proposed to enhance the efficiency of road traffic. To achieve this, it is essential to determine the precise position of vehicles relative to each other. Global positioning system (GPS) devices have an intended positioning error that might increase due to various conditions, e.g., the number of available satellites, nearby buildings, trees, driving into tunnels, etc., making it difficult to compute the exact relative position between two vehicles. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a new architectural framework to improve positioning accuracy using images captured by onboard cameras. With the rapid growth of the data scale in data centers, the high reliability of storage is facing various challenges. Specifically, hardware failures such as disk faults occur frequently, causing serious system availability issues. In this context, hardware fault prediction based on AI and big data technologies has become a research hotspot, aiming to guide operation and maintenance personnel to implement preventive replacement through accurate prediction to reduce hardware failure rates. However, existing methods still have weaknesses in terms of accuracy due to the impacts of data quality issues such as the sample imbalance. This article proposes a disk fault prediction method based on classification intensity resampling, which fills the gap between the degree of data imbalance and the actual classification intensity of the task by introducing a base classifier to calculate the classification intensity, thus better preserving the data features of the original dataset. In addition, using ensemble learning methods such as random forests, combined with resampling, an integrated classifier for imbalanced data is developed to further improve the prediction accuracy. Experimental verification shows that compared with traditional methods, the F1-score of disk fault prediction is improved by 6%, and the model training time is also greatly reduced. The fault prediction method proposed in this paper has been applied to approximately 80 disk drives and nearly 40,000 disks in the production environment of a large bank's data center to guide preventive replacements. Compared to traditional methods, the number of preventive replacements based on our method has decreased by approximately 21%, while the overall disk failure rate remains unchanged, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of our method. With the rapid development of new power systems, diverse new power services have imposed stricter requirements on network resources and performance. However, the traditional method of transmitting request data to the IoT management platform for unified processing suffers from large delays due to long transmission distances, making it difficult to meet the delay requirements of new power services. Therefore, to reduce the transmission delay, data transmission, storage and computation need to be performed locally. However, due to the limited resources of individual nodes in the local power wireless communication network, issues such as tight coupling between devices and resources and a lack of flexible allocation need to be addressed. The collaborative allocation of resources among multiple nodes in the local network is necessary to satisfy the multi-dimensional resource requirements of new power services. In response to the problems of limited node resources, inflexible resource allocation, and the high complexity of multi-dimensional resource allocation in local power wireless communication networks, this paper proposes a multi-objective joint optimization model for the collaborative allocation of communication, storage, and computing resources. This model utilizes the computational characteristics of communication resources to reduce the dimensionality of the objective function. Furthermore, a mouse swarm optimization algorithm based on multi-strategy improvements is proposed. The management of water resources is becoming increasingly important in several contexts, including agriculture. Recently, innovative agricultural practices, advanced sensors, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices have made it possible to improve the efficiency of water use. However, it is the application of control strategies based on advanced machine learning techniques that enables the adoption of smart irrigation scheduling and the immediate economic, social, and environmental benefits. This challenging research area has attracted the attention of many researchers worldwide, who have proposed several technological and methodological solutions. Unfortunately, the results of these scientific efforts have not yet been categorized in a thematic survey, making it difficult to understand how far we are from optimal water management based on machine learning. This paper fills this gap by focusing on smart irrigation systems with an emphasis on machine learning. More specifically, the generic structure of a smart agriculture system is presented, and existing machine learning strategies and available datasets are discussed. Furthermore, several open issues are identified, especially in the processing of long-term data, also due to the lack of corresponding annotated datasets. One of the practical obstacles limiting the use of cloud-based gamification applications is the lack of an Internet connection of adequate quality. In this paper, we describe a practical solution to this problem by the implementation of client-side gamification rule processing so that most events generated by players can be processed without the need to involve server-side functions; therefore, only a handful of data have to be transmitted to the server for global state synchronization, and only when an Internet connection is available. For this purpose, we adopt a simple textual gamification rule definition format, implement the rule parser and event processor, and evaluate the solution in terms of performance in experimental conditions. The obtained results are optimistic, showing that the developed solution can easily handle rule sets and event streams of realistic sizes. This paper proposes a novel decentralized PKI system tailored specifically for IoT environments to address these challenges. Our approach introduces a unique "zone" architecture overseen by zone masters, facilitating efficient certificate management within IoT clusters while reducing the risk of single points of failure. Furthermore, we prioritize the use of lightweight cryptographic techniques, including Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), to optimize performance without compromising security. Conventional few-shot learning (FSL) mainly focuses on knowledge transfer from a single source dataset to a recognition scenario with only a few training samples available but still similar to the source domain. In this paper, we consider a more practical FSL setting where multiple semantically different datasets are available to address a wide range of FSL tasks, especially for some recognition scenarios beyond natural images, such as remote sensing and medical imagery. It can be referred to as multi-source cross-domain FSL. To tackle the problem, we propose a two-stage learning scheme, termed learning and adapting multi-source representations (LAMR). In the first stage, we propose a multi-head network to obtain efficient multi-domain representations, where all source domains share the same backbone except for the last parallel projection layers for domain specialization. We train the representations in a multi-task setting where each in-domain classification task is taken by a cosine classifier. In the second stage, considering that instance discrimination and class discrimination are crucial for robust recognition, we propose two contrastive objectives for adapting the pre-trained representations to be task-specialized on the few-shot data. Careful ablation studies verify that LAMR significantly improves representation transferability, showing consistent performance boosts. We also extend LAMR to single-source FSL by introducing a dataset-splitting strategy that equally splits one source dataset into sub-domains. The empirical results show that LAMR can achieve SOTA performance on the BSCD-FSL benchmark and competitive performance on mini-ImageNet, highlighting its versatility and effectiveness for FSL of both natural and specific imaging. Stemming vulnerabilities out of a smart contract prior to its deployment is essential to ensure the security of decentralized applications. As such, numerous tools and machine-learning-based methods have been proposed to help detect vulnerabilities in smart contracts. Furthermore, various ways of encoding the smart contracts for analysis have also been proposed. However, the impact of these input methods has not been systematically studied, which is the primary goal of this paper. In this preliminary study, we experimented with four common types of input, including Word2Vec, FastText, Bag-of-Words (BoW), and Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF). To focus on the comparison of these input types, we used the same deep-learning model, i.e., convolutional neural networks, in all experiments. Using a public dataset, we compared the vulnerability detection performance of the four input types both in the binary classification scenarios and the multiclass classification scenario. Our findings show that TF-IDF is the best overall input type among the four. TF-IDF has excellent detection performance in all scenarios: (1) it has the best F1 score and accuracy in binary classifications for all vulnerability types except for the delegate vulnerability where TF-IDF comes in a close second, and (2) it comes in a very close second behind BoW (within 0.8%) in the multiclass classification. This paper explores the intricate interplay between perceived challenge and narrative immersion within role-playing game (RPG) video games, motivated by the escalating influence of game difficulty on player choices. A quantitative methodology was employed, utilizing three specific questionnaires for data collection on player habits and experiences, perceived challenge, and narrative immersion. The study consisted of two interconnected stages: an initial research phase to identify and understand player habits, followed by an in-person intervention involving the playing of three distinct RPG video games. During this intervention, selected players engaged with the chosen RPG video games separately, and after each session, responded to two surveys assessing narrative immersion and perceived challenge. The study concludes that a meticulous adjustment of perceived challenge by video game studios moderately influences narrative immersion, reinforcing the enduring prominence of the RPG genre as a distinctive choice in narrative. In-lab elicitation studies inform the design of gestures by having the participants suggest actions to activate the system functions. Conversely, crowd-sourced identification studies follow the opposite path, asking the users to associate the control actions with functions. Identification studies have been used to validate the gestures produced by elicitation studies, but not to design interactive systems. In this paper, we show that identification studies can be combined with in situ observations to design the gestures for data exploration with public displays. To illustrate this method, we developed two versions of a gesture-controlled system for data exploration with 368 users: one designed through an elicitation study, and one designed through in situ observations followed by an identification study. Our results show that the users discovered the majority of the gestures with similar accuracy across the two prototypes. Additionally, the in situ approach enabled the direct recruitment of target users, and the crowd-sourced approach typical of identification studies expedited the design process. This paper aims to determine whether there is a case for promoting a new benchmark for forecasting practice via the innovative application of generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) for predicting the future. Today, forecasts can be generated via Gen-AI models without the need for an in-depth understanding of forecasting theory, practice, or coding. Therefore, using three datasets, we present a comparative analysis of forecasts from Gen-AI models against forecasts from seven univariate and automated models from the forecast package in R, covering both parametric and non-parametric forecasting techniques. In some cases, we find statistically significant evidence to conclude that forecasts from Gen-AI models can outperform forecasts from popular benchmarks like seasonal ARIMA, seasonal naïve, exponential smoothing, and Theta forecasts (to name a few). Our findings also indicate that the accuracy of forecasts from Gen-AI models can vary not only based on the underlying data structure but also on the quality of prompt engineering (thus highlighting the continued importance of forecasting education), with the forecast accuracy appearing to improve at longer horizons. Therefore, we find some evidence towards promoting forecasts from Gen-AI models as benchmarks in future forecasting practice. This paper considers a resource allocation problem involving servers and mobile users (MUs) operating in a serverless edge computing (SEC)-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) network. Each MU has a fixed budget, and each server is powered by the grid and has energy harvesting (EH) capability. Our objective is to maximize the revenue of the operator that operates the said servers and the number of resources purchased by the MUs. We propose a Stackelberg game approach, where servers and MUs act as leaders and followers, respectively. We prove the existence of a Stackelberg game equilibrium and develop an iterative algorithm to determine the final game equilibrium price. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is efficient in terms of the SEC's profit and MU's demand. Moreover, both MUs and SECs gain benefits from renewable energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
