In South Korea, the rapid proliferation of smartphones has led to an uptick in messenger phishing attacks associated with electronic communication financial scams. In response to this, various phishing detection algorithms have been proposed. However, collecting messenger phishing data poses challenges due to concerns about its potential use in criminal activities. Consequently, a Korean phishing dataset can be composed of imbalanced data, where the number of general messages might outnumber the phishing ones. This class imbalance problem and data scarcity can lead to overfitting issues, making it difficult to achieve high performance. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a phishing messages classification method using Biased Discriminant Analysis without resorting to data augmentation techniques. In this paper, by optimizing the parameters for BDA, we achieved exceptionally high performances in the phishing messages classification experiment, with 95.45% for Recall and 96.85% for the BA metric. Moreover, when compared with other algorithms, the proposed method demonstrated robustness against overfitting due to the class imbalance problem and exhibited minimal performance disparity between training and testing datasets. Over the last few years, a plethora of papers presenting machine-learning-based approaches for intrusion detection have been published. However, the majority of those papers do not compare their results with a proper baseline of a signature-based intrusion detection system, thus violating good machine learning practices. In order to evaluate the pros and cons of the machine-learning-based approach, we replicated a research study that uses a deep neural network model for intrusion detection. The results of our replicated research study expose several systematic problems with the used datasets and evaluation methods. In our experiments, a signature-based intrusion detection system with a minimal setup was able to outperform the tested model even under small traffic changes. Testing the replicated neural network on a new dataset recorded in the same environment with the same attacks using the same tools showed that the accuracy of the neural network dropped to 54%. Amidst an unprecedented period of technological progress, incorporating digital platforms into diverse domains of existence has become indispensable, fundamentally altering the operational processes of governments, businesses, and individuals. Nevertheless, the swift process of digitization has concurrently led to the emergence of cybercrime, which takes advantage of weaknesses in interconnected systems. The growing dependence of society on digital communication, commerce, and information sharing has led to the exploitation of these platforms by malicious actors for hacking, identity theft, ransomware, and phishing attacks. With the growing dependence of organizations, businesses, and individuals on digital platforms for information exchange, commerce, and communication, malicious actors have identified the susceptibilities present in these systems and have begun to exploit them. This study examines 28 research papers focusing on intrusion detection systems (IDS), and phishing detection in particular, and how quickly responses and detections in cybersecurity may be made. We investigate various approaches and quantitative measurements to comprehend the link between reaction time and detection time and emphasize the necessity of minimizing both for improved cybersecurity. The research focuses on reducing detection and reaction times, especially for phishing attempts, to improve cybersecurity. In smart grids and automobile control networks, faster attack detection is important, and machine learning can help. It also stresses the necessity to improve protocols to address increasing cyber risks while maintaining scalability, interoperability, and resilience. Although machine-learning-based techniques have the potential for detection precision and reaction speed, obstacles still need to be addressed to attain real-time capabilities and adjust to constantly changing threats. This paper presents an overview of the uses of the combination of eye tracking and artificial intelligence. In the paper, several aspects of both eye tracking and applied AI methods have been analyzed. It analyzes the eye tracking hardware used along with the sampling frequency, the number of test participants, additional parameters, the extraction of features, the artificial intelligence methods used and the methods of verification of the results. Artificial intelligence is changing and influencing our world. As one of the main algorithms in the field of artificial intelligence, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have developed rapidly in recent years. Especially after the emergence of NASNet, CNNs have gradually pushed the idea of AutoML to the public's attention, and large numbers of new structures designed by automatic searches are appearing. These networks are usually based on reinforcement learning and evolutionary learning algorithms. However, sometimes, the blocks of these networks are complex, and there is no small model for simpler tasks. Therefore, this paper proposes POSS-CNN aiming at target recognition and detection, which employs a multi-branch CNN structure with PSNC and a method of automatic parallel selection for super parameters based on a multi-branch CNN structure. Moreover, POSS-CNN can be broken up. By choosing a single branch or the combination of two branches as the "benchmark", as well as the overall POSS-CNN, we can achieve seven models with different precision and operations. The test accuracy of POSS-CNN for a recognition task tested on a CIFAR10 dataset can reach 86.4%, which is equivalent to AlexNet and VggNet, but the operation and parameters of the whole model in this paper are 45.9% and 45.8% of AlexNet, and 29.5% and 29.4% of VggNet. The mAP of POSS-CNN for a detection task tested on the LSVH dataset is 45.8, inferior to the 62.3 of YOLOv3. However, compared with YOLOv3, the operation and parameters of the model in this paper are reduced by 57.4% and 15.6%, respectively. After being accelerated by WRA, POSS-CNN for a detection task tested on an LSVH dataset can achieve 27 fps, and the energy efficiency is 0.42 J/f, which is 5 times and 96.6 times better than GPU 2080Ti in performance and energy efficiency, respectively. Federated learning (FL) is a scheme in which several consumers work collectively to unravel machine learning (ML) problems, with a dominant collector synchronizing the procedure. This decision correspondingly enables the training data to be distributed, guaranteeing that the individual device's data are secluded. The paper systematically reviewed the available literature using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guiding principle. The study presents a systematic review of appliable ML approaches for FL, reviews the categorization of FL, discusses the FL application areas, presents the relationship between FL and Blockchain Technology (BT), and discusses some existing literature that has used FL and ML approaches. The study also examined applicable machine learning models for federated learning. The inclusion measures were (i) published between 2017 and 2021, (ii) written in English, (iii) published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, and (iv) Preprint published papers. Unpublished studies, thesis and dissertation studies, (ii) conference papers, (iii) not in English, and (iv) did not use artificial intelligence models and blockchain technology were all removed from the review. In total, 84 eligible papers were finally examined in this study. Finally, in recent years, the amount of research on ML using FL has increased. Accuracy equivalent to standard feature-based techniques has been attained, and ensembles of many algorithms may yield even better results. We discovered that the best results were obtained from the hybrid design of an ML ensemble employing expert features. However, some additional difficulties and issues need to be overcome, such as efficiency, complexity, and smaller datasets. This paper addresses the enhancement of modern security through the integration of electrocardiograms (ECGs) into biometric authentication systems. As technology advances, the demand for reliable identity authentication systems has grown, given the rise in breaches associated with traditional techniques that rely on unique biological and behavioral traits. These techniques are emerging as more reliable alternatives. Among the biological features used for authentication, ECGs offer unique advantages, including resistance to forgery, real-time detection, and continuous identification ability. Advances in image analysis and deep learning technologies have expanded the use of floor plans, traditionally used for sales and rentals, to include 3D reconstruction and automated design. However, a typical floor plan does not provide detailed information, such as the type and number of outlets and locations affecting the placement of furniture and appliances. Electrical plans, providing details on electrical installations, are intricate due to overlapping symbols and lines and remain unutilized as house manufacturers independently manage them. This paper proposes an analysis method that extracts the house structure, room semantics, connectivities, and specifics of wall and ceiling sockets from electrical plans, achieving robustness to noise and overlaps by leveraging the unique features of symbols and lines. The experiments using 544 electrical plans show that our method achieved better accuracy (+3.6 pt) for recognizing room structures than the state-of-the-art method, 87.2% in identifying room semantics and 97.7% in detecting sockets. The pervasive reach of social media like the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, offers unique opportunities for real-time analysis of cyberattack developments. By parsing and classifying tweets related to cyberattacks, we can glean valuable insights into their type, location, impact, and potential mitigation strategies. However, with millions of daily tweets, manual analysis is inefficient and time-consuming. This paper proposes an interactive and automated dashboard powered by natural language processing to effectively address this challenge. First, we created the CybAttT dataset, which contains 36,071 manually labeled English cyberattack tweets. We experimented with different classification algorithms. Following that, the best model was deployed and integrated into the streaming pipeline for real-time classification. This dynamic dashboard makes use of four different visualization formats: a geographical map, a data table, informative tiles, and a bar chart. Users can readily access crucial information about attacks, including location, timing, and perpetrators, enabling a swift response and mitigation efforts. Our experimental results demonstrated the dashboard's promising visualization capabilities, highlighting its potential as a valuable tool for organizations and individuals seeking an intuitive and comprehensive overview of cyberattack events. Investment decision-makers increasingly rely on modern digital technologies to enhance their strategies in today's rapidly changing and complex market environment. This paper examines the impact of incorporating Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) models into traditional trading strategies. The core investigation revolves around whether strategies enhanced with LSTM technology perform better than traditional methods alone. Traditional trading strategies typically depend on analyzing current closing prices and various technical indicators to take trading action. However, by applying LSTM models, this study aims to forecast closing prices with greater accuracy, thereby improving trading performance. Our findings indicate that trading strategies that utilize LSTM models outperform traditional strategies. This improvement suggests a significant advantage in using LSTM models for market prediction and trading decision making. Predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is crucial to preventing system failures and enhancing operational performance. Knowing the RUL of a battery enables one to perform preventative maintenance or replace the battery before its useful life expires, which is vital in safety-critical applications. The prediction of the RUL of Li-ion batteries plays a critical role in their optimal utilization throughout their lifetime and supporting sustainable practices. This paper conducts a comparative analysis to assess the effectiveness of multiple machine learning (ML) models in predicting the capacity fade and RUL of Li-ion batteries. Three case studies are analyzed to assess the performances of the state-of-the-art ML models, considering two distinct datasets. These case studies are conducted under various operating conditions such as temperature, C-rate, state of charge (SOC), and depth of discharge (DOD) of the batteries in Cases 1 and 2, and a different set of features and charging policies for the second dataset in Case 3. Meanwhile, diverse extracted features from the initial cycles of the second dataset are considered in Case 3 to predict the RUL of Li-ion batteries in all cycles. In addition, a multi-feature multi-target (MFMT) feature mapping is introduced to investigate the performance of the developed ML models in predicting the battery capacity fade and RUL in the entire life cycle. Multiple ML models that are developed for the comparison analysis in the proposed methodology include Random Forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), light gradient-boosting machine (LightGBM), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), long short-term memory (LSTM), and attention-LSTM. Furthermore, hyperparameter tuning is applied to improve the performance of the XGBoost and LightGBM models. The results demonstrate that the extreme gradient boosting with hyperparameter tuning (XGBoost-HT) model outperforms the other ML models in terms of the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the battery capacity fade and RUL for all cycles. The obtained RMSE and MAPE values for XGBoost-HT in terms of cycle life are 69 cycles and 6.5%, respectively, for the third case. In addition, the XGBoost-HT model handles the MFMT feature mapping within an acceptable range of RMSE and MAPE, compared to the rest of the developed ML models and similar benchmarks. In this paper, we propose autonomous cycles of data analysis tasks for the automation of the production chains aimed to improve the productivity of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the context of agroindustry. In the autonomous cycles of data analysis tasks, each task interacts with the others and has different functions, in order to reach the goal of the cycle. In this article, we identify three industrial-automation processes within the production chain, in which autonomous cycles can be applied. The first cycle is responsible to identify the type of input to be transformed—such as quantity, quality, time, and cost—based on information from the organization and its context. The second cycle selects the technological level used in the raw-material transformation, characterizing the platform of plant processing. The last cycle identifies the level of specialization of the generated product, such as the quality and value of the product. The dynamic flexible job-shop problem (DFJSP) is a realistic and challenging problem that many production plants face. As the product line becomes more complex, the machines may suddenly break down or resume service, so we need a dynamic scheduling framework to cope with the changing number of machines over time. This issue has been rarely addressed in the literature. In this paper, we propose an improved learning-to-dispatch (L2D) model to generate a reasonable and good schedule to minimize the makespan. We formulate a DFJSP as a disjunctive graph and use graph neural networks (GINs) to embed the disjunctive graph into states for the agent to learn. The use of GINs enables the model to handle the dynamic number of machines and to effectively generalize to large-scale instances. The learning agent is a multi-layer feedforward network trained with a reinforcement learning algorithm, called proximal policy optimization. We trained the model on small-sized problems and tested it on various-sized problems. The experimental results show that our model outperforms the existing best priority dispatching rule algorithms, such as shortest processing time, most work remaining, flow due date per most work remaining, and most operations remaining. Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important, especially in the medical field. While AI has been used in medicine for some time, its growth in the last decade is remarkable. Specifically, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques in medicine have been increasingly adopted due to the growing abundance of health-related data, the improved suitability of such techniques for managing large datasets, and more computational power. ML and DL methodologies are fostering the development of new "intelligent" tools and expert systems to process data, to automatize human–machine interactions, and to deliver advanced predictive systems that are changing every aspect of the scientific research, industry, and society. The Italian scientific community was instrumental in advancing this research area. This article aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the ML and DL methodologies and applications used in medicine by the Italian research community in the last five years. To this end, we selected all the papers published in the last five years with at least one of the authors affiliated to an Italian institution that in the title, in the abstract, or in the keywords present the terms "machine learning" or "deep learning" and reference a medical area. We focused our research on journal papers under the hypothesis that Italian researchers prefer to present novel but well-established research in scientific journals. We then analyzed the selected papers considering different dimensions, including the medical topic, the type of data, the pre-processing methods, the learning methods, and the evaluation methods. As a final outcome, a comprehensive overview of the Italian research landscape is given, highlighting how the community has increasingly worked on a very heterogeneous range of medical problems. Ransomware is a type of malicious software that encrypts a victim's files and demands payment in exchange for the decryption key. It is a rapidly growing and evolving threat that has caused significant damage and disruption to individuals and organizations around the world. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive ransomware classification approach based on the comparison of similarity matrices derived from static, dynamic analysis, and visualization. Our approach involves the use of multiple analysis techniques to extract features from ransomware samples and to generate similarity matrices based on these features. These matrices are then compared using a variety of comparison algorithms to identify similarities and differences between the samples. The resulting similarity scores are then used to classify the samples into different categories, such as families, variants, and versions. We evaluate our approach using a dataset of ransomware samples and demonstrate that it can accurately classify the samples with a high degree of accuracy. One advantage of our approach is the use of visualization, which allows us to classify and cluster large datasets of ransomware in a more intuitive and effective way. In addition, static analysis has the advantage of being fast and accurate, while dynamic analysis allows us to classify and cluster packed ransomware samples. We also compare our approach to other classification approaches based on single analysis techniques and show that our approach outperforms these approaches in terms of classification accuracy. Overall, our study demonstrates the potential of using a comprehensive approach based on the comparison of multiple analysis techniques, including static analysis, dynamic analysis, and visualization, for the accurate and efficient classification of ransomware. The presence of malicious software (malware), for example, in Android applications (apps), has harmful or irreparable consequences to the user and/or the device. Despite the protections app stores provide to avoid malware, it keeps growing in sophistication and diffusion. In this paper, we explore the use of machine learning (ML) techniques to detect malware in Android apps. The focus is on the study of different data pre-processing, dimensionality reduction, and classification techniques, assessing the generalization ability of the learned models using public domain datasets and specifically developed apps. We find that the classifiers that achieve better performance for this task are support vector machines (SVM) and random forests (RF). We emphasize the use of feature selection (FS) techniques to reduce the data dimensionality and to identify the most relevant features in Android malware classification, leading to explainability on this task. Our approach can identify the most relevant features to classify an app as malware. Namely, we conclude that permissions play a prominent role in Android malware detection. This paper focuses on addressing the complex healthcare needs of patients struggling with discordant chronic comorbidities (DCCs). Managing these patients within the current healthcare system often proves to be a challenging process, characterized by evolving treatment needs necessitating multiple medical appointments and coordination among different clinical specialists. This makes it difficult for both patients and healthcare providers to set and prioritize medications and understand potential drug interactions. The primary motivation of this research is the need to reduce medication conflict and optimize medication regimens for individuals with DCCs. To achieve this, we allowed patients to specify their health conditions and primary and major treatment concerns, for example, costs of medication, interactions with current drugs, and weight gain. Utilizing data gathered from MTurk and Qualtrics, we gained insights into healthcare providers' strategies for making/customizing medication regimens. We constructed a dataset and subsequently deployed machine learning algorithms to predict optimal medication regimens for DCC patients with specific treatment concerns. Following the benchmarking different models, Random forest emerged as the top performer, achieving an accuracy of 0.93. This research contributes significantly to the enhancement of decision-making processes, empowers patients to take a more active role in their healthcare, and promotes more informed and productive discussions between patients and their care teams. A growing focus among scientists has been on researching the techniques of automatic detection of dementia that can be applied to the speech samples of individuals with dementia. Leveraging the rapid advancements in Deep Learning (DL) and Natural Language Processing (NLP), these techniques have shown great potential in dementia detection. In this context, this paper proposes a method for dementia detection from the transcribed speech of subjects. Unlike conventional methods that rely on advanced language models to address the ability of the subject to make coherent and meaningful sentences, our approach relies on the center of focus of the subjects and how it changes over time as the subject describes the content of the cookie theft image, a commonly used image for evaluating one's cognitive abilities. To do so, we divide the cookie theft image into regions of interest, and identify, in each sentence spoken by the subject, which regions are being talked about. We employed a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network to learn different patterns of dementia subjects and control ones and used it to perform a 10-fold cross validation-based classification. Our experimental results on the Pitt corpus from the DementiaBank resulted in a 82.9% accuracy at the subject level and 81.0% at the sample level. By employing data-augmentation techniques, the accuracy at both levels was increased to 83.6% and 82.1%, respectively. Deep learning is used in various applications due to its advantages over traditional Machine Learning (ML) approaches in tasks encompassing complex pattern learning, automatic feature extraction, scalability, adaptability, and performance in general. This paper proposes an end-to-end (E2E) delay estimation method for 5G networks through deep learning (DL) techniques based on Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM). In the first step, the components of a GMM are estimated through the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm and are subsequently used as labeled data in a supervised deep learning stage. A multi-layer neural network model is trained using the labeled data and assuming different numbers of E2E delay observations for each training sample. The accuracy and computation time of the proposed deep learning estimator based on the Gaussian Mixture Model (DLEGMM) are evaluated for different 5G network scenarios. The simulation results show that the DLEGMM outperforms the GMM method based on the EM algorithm, in terms of the accuracy of the E2E delay estimates, although requiring a higher computation time. The estimation method is characterized for different 5G scenarios, and when compared to GMM, DLEGMM reduces the mean squared error (MSE) obtained with GMM between 1.7 to 2.6 times. The accurate classification of landfill waste diversion plays a critical role in efficient waste management practices. Traditional approaches, such as visual inspection, weighing and volume measurement, and manual sorting, have been widely used but suffer from subjectivity, scalability, and labour requirements. In contrast, machine learning approaches, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), have emerged as powerful deep learning models for waste detection and classification. This paper analyses VGG-16, InceptionResNetV2, DenseNet121, Inception V3, and MobileNetV2 models to classify real-life waste when trained on pristine and unadulterated materials, versus samples collected at a landfill site. When training on DiversionNet, the unadulterated material dataset with labels required for landfill modelling, classification accuracy was limited to 49.69% in the real environment. Using real-world samples in the newly formed RealWaste dataset showed that practical applications for deep learning in waste classification are possible, with Inception V3 reaching 89.19% classification accuracy on the full spectrum of labels required for accurate modelling. The vulnerability of machine learning models to membership inference attacks, which aim to determine whether a specific record belongs to the training dataset, is explored in this paper. Federated learning allows multiple parties to independently train a model without sharing or centralizing their data, offering privacy advantages. However, when private datasets are used in federated learning and model access is granted, the risk of membership inference attacks emerges, potentially compromising sensitive data. To address this, effective defenses in a federated learning environment must be developed without compromising the utility of the target model. This study empirically investigates and compares membership inference attack methodologies in both federated and centralized learning environments, utilizing diverse optimizers and assessing attacks with and without defenses on image and tabular datasets. The findings demonstrate that a combination of knowledge distillation and conventional mitigation techniques (such as Gaussian dropout, Gaussian noise, and activity regularization) significantly mitigates the risk of information leakage in both federated and centralized settings. Several supervised machine learning models have been proposed and used to detect Android ransomware. These models were trained using different datasets from different sources. However, the age of the ransomware datasets was not considered when training and testing these models. Therefore, the detection accuracy for those models is inaccurate since they learned using features from specific ransomware, old or new ransomware, and they did not learn using diverse ransomware features from different ages. This paper sheds light on the importance of considering the age of ransomware datasets and its effects on the detection accuracy of supervised machine learning models. This proves that supervised machine learning models trained using new ransomware dataset are inefficient in detecting old types of ransomware and vice versa. Moreover, this paper collected a large and diverse dataset of ransomware applications that comprises new and old ransomware developed during the period 2008–2020. Furthermore, the paper proposes a supervised machine learning model that is trained and tested using the diverse dataset. The experiments show that the proposed model is efficient in detecting Android ransomware regardless of its age by achieving an accuracy of approximately 97.48%. Analysing and understanding donor behaviour in nonprofit organisations (NPOs) is challenging due to the lack of human and technical resources. Machine learning (ML) techniques can analyse and understand donor behaviour at a certain level; however, it remains to be seen how to build and design an artificial-intelligence-enabled decision-support system (AI-enabled DSS) to analyse donor behaviour. Thus, this paper proposes an AI-enabled DSS conceptual design to analyse donor behaviour in NPOs. A conceptual design is created following a design science research approach to evaluate an AI-enabled DSS's initial DPs and features to analyse donor behaviour in NPOs. The evaluation process of the conceptual design applied formative assessment by conducting interviews with stakeholders from NPOs. The interviews were conducted using the Appreciative Inquiry framework to facilitate the process of interviews. The evaluation of the conceptual design results led to the recommendation for efficiency, effectiveness, flexibility, and usability in the requirements of the AI-enabled DSS. This research contributes to the design knowledge base of AI-enabled DSSs for analysing donor behaviour in NPOs. Future research will combine theoretical components to introduce a practical AI-enabled DSS for analysing donor behaviour in NPOs. Stroke remains a predominant cause of mortality and disability worldwide. The endeavor to diagnose stroke through biomechanical time-series data coupled with Artificial Intelligence (AI) poses a formidable challenge, especially amidst constrained participant numbers. The challenge escalates when dealing with small datasets, a common scenario in preliminary medical research. While recent advances have ushered in few-shot learning algorithms adept at handling sparse data, this paper pioneers a distinctive methodology involving a visualization-centric approach to navigating the small-data challenge in diagnosing stroke survivors based on gait-analysis-derived biomechanical data. Employing Siamese neural networks (SNNs), our method transforms a biomechanical time series into visually intuitive images, facilitating a unique analytical lens. The kinematic data encapsulated comprise a spectrum of gait metrics, including movements of the ankle, knee, hip, and center of mass in three dimensions for both paretic and non-paretic legs. Following the visual transformation, the SNN serves as a potent feature extractor, mapping the data into a high-dimensional feature space conducive to classification. The extracted features are subsequently fed into various machine learning (ML) models like support vector machines (SVMs), Random Forest (RF), or neural networks (NN) for classification. In pursuit of heightened interpretability, a cornerstone in medical AI applications, we employ the Grad-CAM (Class Activation Map) tool to visually highlight the critical regions influencing the model's decision. Our methodology, though exploratory, showcases a promising avenue for leveraging visualized biomechanical data in stroke diagnosis, achieving a perfect classification rate in our preliminary dataset. The visual inspection of generated images elucidates a clear separation of classes (100%), underscoring the potential of this visualization-driven approach in the realm of small data. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder affecting the nerve cells. PD gives rise to various neurological conditions, including gradual reduction in movement speed, tremors, limb stiffness, and alterations in walking patterns. Identifying Parkinson's disease in its initial phases is crucial to preserving the well-being of those afflicted. However, accurately identifying PD in its early phases is intricate due to the aging population. Therefore, in this paper, we harnessed machine learning-based ensemble methodologies and focused on the premotor stage of PD to create a precise and reliable early-stage PD detection model named PDD-ET. We compiled a tailored, extensive dataset encompassing patient mobility, medication habits, prior medical history, rigidity, gender, and age group. The PDD-ET model amalgamates the outcomes of various ML techniques, resulting in an impressive 97.52% accuracy in early-stage PD detection. Furthermore, the PDD-ET model effectively distinguishes between multiple stages of PD and accurately categorizes the severity levels of patients affected by PD. The evaluation findings demonstrate that the PDD-ET model outperforms the SVR, CNN, Stacked LSTM, LSTM, GRU, Alex Net, [Decision Tree, RF, and SVR], Deep Neural Network, HOG, Quantum ReLU Activator, Improved KNN, Adaptive Boosting, RF, and Deep Learning Model techniques by the approximate margins of 37%, 30%, 20%, 27%, 25%, 18%, 19%, 27%, 25%, 23%, 45%, 40%, 42%, and 16%, respectively. Patient-reported (PRO) and clinician-reported (CRO) outcomes are assessment instruments that are completed by patients and trained healthcare professionals, respectively. A PRO is a report of the direct experience of the patient with a given disease condition. A CRO is an assessment of the condition of the patient by the healthcare provider. PROs may not be accessible to all patients, especially those suffering from severe disease conditions. CROs are time-consuming and therefore administered infrequently. In the present study, we introduce a new form of assessment, the digital-reported outcome (DRO), which is automatically derived from the medical notes of the patient. DROs have a low overhead and can be generated at each patient's visit to complement other outcome-assessment instruments and enhance clinical decision support by identifying at-risk patients. In this study, a DRO is developed to evaluate the functional impairment in the daily activities of two cohorts of patients suffering from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The input of the DRO is a single medical note from the electronic medical record of the patient. This note is submitted to a hierarchical bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) model. First, a sentence-level embedding is produced for each sentence in the note using a token-level attention mechanism. Second, an embedding for the entire note is constructed using a sentence-level attention mechanism. Third, the final embedding is classified using a feed-forward neural network. The model is trained to classify patients into moderate or severe functioning impairment levels according to the general assessment of functioning (GAF) scale, a CRO instrument for the assessment of the impact of mental illness on the daily activities of the patient. The DRO is validated using medical notes that were labeled by multiple healthcare providers from different healthcare institutions. The results indicate that a general DRO is able to classify patients from the two cohorts according to the two functioning impairment levels (severe versus moderate) prior to the onset of disease with an AUC of 76%. Disease-specific DROs are only applicable after the onset of the disease and produced AUCs of nearly 85%. The methodology introduced in the present paper is practical and can support the automated monitoring of the severity of the functioning impairment of bipolar and schizophrenia patients. Right from the beginning, attendance has played an important role in the education systems, not only in student success but in the overall interest of the matter. Although all schools try to accentuate good attendance, still some schools find it hard to achieve the required level (96% in UK) of average attendance. The most productive way of increasing the pupils′ attendance rate is to predict when it is going to go down, understand the reasons—why it happened—and act on the affecting factors so as to prevent it. Artificial intelligence (AI) is an automated machine learning solution for different types of problems. Several machine learning (ML) models like logistic regression, decision trees, etc. are easy to understand; however, complicated (Neural Network, BART etc.) ML models are not transparent but are black-boxes for humans. It is not always evident how machine intelligence arrived at a decision. However, not always, but in critical applications it is important that humans can understand the reasons for such decisions. In this paper, we present a methodology on the application example of pupil attendance for constructing explanations for AI classification algorithms. The methodology includes building a model of the application in the Isabelle Insider and Infrastructure framework (IIIf) and an algorithm (PCR) that helps us to obtain a detailed logical rule to specify the performance of the black-box algorithm, hence allowing us to explain it. The explanation is provided within the logical model of the IIIf, thus is suitable for human audiences. It has been shown that the RR-cycle of IIIf can be adapted to provide a method for iteratively extracting an explanation by interleaving attack tree analysis with precondition refinement, which finally yields a general rule that describes the decision taken by a black-box algorithm produced by Artificial intelligence. In this paper, a proof-of-concept method for detecting abnormal behavior in dementia patients based on a single case study is proposed. This method incorporates the collection of lifelog data using affordable sensors and the development of a machine-learning-based system. Such an approach has the potential to enable the prompt detection of abnormal behavior in dementia patients within nursing homes and to send alerts to caregivers, which could potentially reduce their workload and decrease the risk of accidents and injuries. In a proof-of-concept experiment conducted on a single dementia patient in a Korean nursing home, the proposed system, specifically the multilayer perceptron model, demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving an accuracy of 0.99, a precision of 1.00, a recall of 1.00, and an F1 score of 1.00. While being cost-effective and adaptable to various nursing homes, these results should be interpreted as preliminary, being based on a limited sample. Future research is aimed at validating and improving the performance of the abnormal behavior detection system by expanding the experiments to include lifelog data from multiple nursing homes and a larger cohort of dementia patients. The potential application of this system extends beyond healthcare and medical fields, reaching into smart home environments and various other facilities. This paper introduces a multi-layered cross-genre corpus, annotated for coreference resolution, causal relations, and temporal relations, comprising a variety of genres, from news articles and children's stories to Reddit posts. Our results reveal distinctive genre-specific characteristics at each layer of annotation, highlighting unique challenges for both annotators and machine learning models. Children's stories feature linear temporal structures and clear causal relations. In contrast, news articles employ non-linear temporal sequences with minimal use of explicit causal or conditional language and few first-person pronouns. Lastly, Reddit posts are author-centered explanations of ongoing situations, with occasional meta-textual reference. Our annotation schemes are adapted from existing work to better suit a broader range of text types. We argue that our multi-layered cross-genre corpus not only reveals genre-specific semantic characteristics but also indicates a rich contextual interplay between the various layers of semantic information. In this paper, aiming at the severe problems of UWB positioning in NLOS-interference circumstances, a complete method is proposed for NLOS/LOS classification, NLOS identification and mitigation, and a final accurate UWB coordinate solution through the integration of two machine learning algorithms and a hybrid localization algorithm, which is called the C-T-CNN-SVM algorithm. This algorithm consists of three basic processes: an LOS/NLOS signal classification method based on SVM, an NLOS signal recognition and error elimination method based on CNN, and an accurate coordinate solution based on the hybrid weighting of the Chan–Taylor method. Finally, the validity and accuracy of the C-T-CNN-SVM algorithm are proved through a comparison with traditional and state-of-the-art methods. (i) Focusing on four main prediction errors (range measurements, maxNoise, stdNoise and rangeError), the standard deviation decreases from 13.65 cm to 4.35 cm, while the mean error decreases from 3.65 cm to 0.27 cm, and the errors are practically distributed normally, demonstrating that after training a SVM for LOS/NLOS signal classification and a CNN for NLOS recognition and mitigation, the accuracy of UWB range measurements may be greatly increased. (ii) After target positioning, the proposed method can realize a one-dimensional X-axis and Y-axis accuracy within 175 mm, and a Z-axis accuracy within 200 mm; a 2D ( X , Y ) accuracy within 200 mm; and a 3D accuracy within 200 mm, most of which fall within (100 mm, 100 mm, 100 mm). (iii) Compared with the traditional algorithms, the proposed C-T-CNN-SVM algorithm performs better in location accuracy, cumulative error probability (CDF), and root-mean-square difference (RMSE): the 1D, 2D, and 3D accuracy of the proposed method is 2.5 times that of the traditional methods. When the location error is less than 10 cm, the CDF of the proposed algorithm only reaches a value of 0.17; when the positioning error reaches 30 cm, only the CDF of the proposed algorithm remains in an acceptable range. The RMSE of the proposed algorithm remains ideal when the distance error is greater than 30 cm. The results of this paper and the idea of a combination of machine learning methods with the classical locating algorithms for improved UWB positioning under NLOS interference could meet the growing need for wireless indoor locating and communication, which indicates the possibility for the practical deployment of such a method in the future. Automatic Speaker Verification (ASV) has its benefits compared to other biometric verification methods, such as face recognition. It is convenient, low cost, and more privacy protected, so it can start being used for various practical applications. However, voice verification systems are vulnerable to unknown spoofing attacks, and need to be upgraded with the pace of forgery techniques. This paper investigates a low-cost attacking scenario in which a playback device is used to impersonate the real speaker. The replay attack only needs a recording and playback device to complete the process, so it can be one of the most widespread spoofing methods. In this paper, we explore and investigate some spectral clues in the high sampling rate recording signals, and utilize this property to effectively detect the replay attack. First, a small scale genuine-replay dataset of high sample rates are constructed using some low-cost mobile terminals; then, the signal features are investigated by comparing their spectra; machine learning models are also applied for evaluation. The Android platform has become the most popular smartphone operating system, which makes it a target for malicious mobile apps. This paper proposes a machine learning-based approach for Android malware detection based on application features. Unlike many prior research that focused exclusively on API Calls and permissions features to improve detection efficiency and accuracy, this paper incorporates applications' contextual features with API Calls and permissions features. Moreover, the proposed approach extracted a new dataset of static API Calls and permission features using a large dataset of malicious and benign Android APK samples. Furthermore, the proposed approach used the Information Gain algorithm to reduce the API and permission feature space from 527 to the most relevant 50 features only. Several combinations of API Calls, permissions, and contextual features were used. These combinations were fed into different machine-learning algorithms to show the significance of using the selected contextual features in detecting Android malware. The experiments show that the proposed model achieved a very high accuracy of about 99.4% when using contextual features in comparison to 97.2% without using contextual features. In today's world, heart disease is the leading cause of death globally. Researchers have proposed various methods aimed at improving the accuracy and efficiency of the clinical diagnosis of heart disease. Auxiliary diagnostic systems based on machine learning are designed to learn and predict the disease status of patients from a large amount of pathological data. Practice has proved that such a system has the potential to save more lives. Therefore, this paper proposes a new framework for predicting heart disease using the smote-xgboost algorithm. First, we propose a feature selection method based on information gain, which aims to extract key features from the dataset and prevent model overfitting. Second, we use the Smote-Enn algorithm to process unbalanced data, and obtain sample data with roughly the same positive and negative categories. Finally, we test the prediction effect of Xgboost algorithm and five other baseline algorithms on sample data. The results show that our proposed method achieves the best performance in the five indicators of accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score and AUC, and the framework proposed in this paper has significant advantages in heart disease prediction. The prompt and accurate diagnosis of breast lesions, including the distinction between cancer, non-cancer, and suspicious cancer, plays a crucial role in the prognosis of breast cancer. In this paper, we introduce a novel method based on feature extraction and reduction for the detection of breast cancer in mammography images. First, we extract features from multiple pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) models, and then concatenate them. The most informative features are selected based on their mutual information with the target variable. Subsequently, the selected features can be classified using a machine learning algorithm. We evaluate our approach using four different machine learning algorithms: neural network (NN), k-nearest neighbor (kNN), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM). Our results demonstrate that the NN-based classifier achieves an impressive accuracy of 92% on the RSNA dataset. This dataset is newly introduced and includes two views as well as additional features like age, which contributed to the improved performance. We compare our proposed algorithm with state-of-the-art methods and demonstrate its superiority, particularly in terms of accuracy and sensitivity. For the MIAS dataset, we achieve an accuracy as high as 94.5%, and for the DDSM dataset, an accuracy of 96% is attained. Application marketplaces collect ratings and reviews from users to provide references for other consumers. Many crowdturfing activities abuse user reviews to manipulate the reputation of an app and mislead other consumers. To understand and improve the ecosystem of reviews in the app market, we investigate the existence of crowdturfing based on the App Store. This paper reports a measurement study of crowdturfing and its reviews in the App Store. We use a sliding window to obtain the relationship graph between users and the community detection method to binary classify the detected communities. Then, we measure and analyze the crowdturfing obtained from the classification and compare them with genuine users. We analyze several features of crowdturfing, such as ratings, sentiment scores, text similarity, and common words. We also investigate which apps crowdturfing often appears in and reveal their role in app ranking. These insights are used as features in machine learning models, and the results show that they can effectively train classifiers and detect crowdturfing reviews with an accuracy of up to 98.13%. The smart city vision has driven the rapid development and advancement of interconnected technologies using the Internet of Things (IoT) and cyber-physical systems (CPS). In this paper, various aspects of IoT and CPS in recent years (from 2013 to May 2023) are surveyed. It first begins with industry standards which ensure cost-effective solutions and interoperability. With ever-growing big data, tremendous undiscovered knowledge can be mined to be transformed into useful applications. Machine learning algorithms are taking the lead to achieve various target applications with formulations such as classification, clustering, regression, prediction, and anomaly detection. Notably, attention has shifted from traditional machine learning algorithms to advanced algorithms, including deep learning, transfer learning, and data generation algorithms, to provide more accurate models. In recent years, there has been an increasing need for advanced security techniques and defense strategies to detect and prevent the IoT and CPS from being attacked. Facial mask detection technology has become increasingly important even beyond the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with the advancement in facial recognition technology, face mask detection has become a crucial feature for various applications. This paper introduces an Internet of Things (IoT) architecture based on a developed deep learning algorithm named You Only Look Once (YOLO) to keep society healthy, and secured, and collect data for future research. The proposed paradigm is built on the basis of economic consideration and is easy to implement. Yet, the used YOLOv4-tiny is one of the fastest object detection models to exist. A mask detection camera (MaskCam) that leverages the computing power of NVIDIA's Jetson Nano edge nanodevices was built side by side with a smart camera application to detect a mask on the face of an individual. MaskCam distinguishes between mask wearers, those who are not wearing masks, and those who are not wearing masks properly according to MQTT protocol. Furthermore, a self-developed web browsing application comes with the MaskCam system to collect and visualize statistics for qualitative and quantitative analysis. The practical results demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed smart mask detection system. On the one hand, YOLOv4-full obtained the best results even at smaller resolutions, although the frame rate is too small for real-time use. On the other hand, it is twice as fast as the other detection models, regardless of the quality of detection. Android platform security is an active area of research where malware detection techniques continuously evolve to identify novel malware and improve the timely and accurate detection of existing malware. Adversaries are constantly in charge of employing innovative techniques to avoid or prolong malware detection effectively. Past studies have shown that malware detection systems are susceptible to evasion attacks where adversaries can successfully bypass the existing security defenses and deliver the malware to the target system without being detected. The evolution of escape-resistant systems is an open research problem. This paper presents a detailed taxonomy and evaluation of Android-based malware evasion techniques deployed to circumvent malware detection. The study characterizes such evasion techniques into two broad categories, polymorphism and metamorphism, and analyses techniques used for stealth malware detection based on the malware's unique characteristics. Furthermore, the article also presents a qualitative and systematic comparison of evasion detection frameworks and their detection methodologies for Android-based malware. Environmental damage has been of much concern, particularly in coastal areas and the oceans, given climate change and the drastic effects of pollution and extreme climate events. Our present-day analytical capabilities, along with advancements in information acquisition techniques such as remote sensing, can be utilised for the management and study of coral reef ecosystems. In this paper, we present Reef-Insight, an unsupervised machine learning framework that features advanced clustering methods and remote sensing for reef habitat mapping. Our framework compares different clustering methods for reef habitat mapping using remote sensing data. We evaluate four major clustering approaches based on qualitative and visual assessments which include k-means, hierarchical clustering, Gaussian mixture model, and density-based clustering. We utilise remote sensing data featuring the One Tree Island reef in Australia's Southern Great Barrier Reef. Our results indicate that clustering methods using remote sensing data can well identify benthic and geomorphic clusters in reefs when compared with other studies. Our results indicate that Reef-Insight can generate detailed reef habitat maps outlining distinct reef habitats and has the potential to enable further insights for reef restoration projects. Speech separation is a well-known problem, especially when there is only one sound mixture available. Estimating the Ideal Binary Mask (IBM) is one solution to this problem. Recent research has focused on the supervised classification approach. The challenge of extracting features from the sources is critical for this method. Speech separation has been accomplished by using a variety of feature extraction models. The majority of them, however, are concentrated on a single feature. The complementary nature of various features have not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network (DNN) ensemble architecture to completely explore the complimentary nature of the diverse features obtained from raw acoustic features. We examined the penultimate discriminative representations instead of employing the features acquired from the output layer. The learned representations were also fused to produce a new features vector, which was then classified by using the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). In addition, a genetic algorithm (GA) was created to optimize the parameters globally. The huge amount of data produced by the Internet of Things need to be validated and curated to be prepared for the selection of relevant data in order to prototype models, train them, and serve the model. On the other side, blockchains and open data are also important data sources that need to be integrated into the proposed integrative models. It is difficult to find a sufficiently versatile and agnostic architecture based on the main machine learning frameworks that facilitate model development and allow continuous training to continuously improve them from the data streams. The paper describes the conceptualization, implementation, and testing of a new architecture that proposes a use case agnostic processing chain. The proposed architecture is mainly built around the Apache Submarine, an unified Machine Learning platform that facilitates the training and deployment of algorithms. Here, Internet of Things data are collected and formatted at the edge level. They are then processed and validated at the fog level. On the other hand, open data and blockchain data via Blockchain Access Layer are directly processed at the cloud level. Device identification is a fundamental issue in the Internet of Things (IoT). Many critical services, including access control and intrusion prevention, are built on correctly identifying each unique device in a network. However, device identification faces many challenges in the IoT. For example, a common technique to identify a device in a network is using the device's MAC address. However, MAC addresses can be easily spoofed. On the other hand, IoT devices also include dynamic characteristics such as traffic patterns which could be used for device identification. Machine-learning-assisted approaches are promising for device identification since they can capture dynamic device behaviors and have automation capabilities. Supervised machine-learning-assisted techniques demonstrate high accuracies for device identification. However, they require a large number of labeled datasets, which can be a challenge. On the other hand, unsupervised machine learning can also reach good accuracies without requiring labeled datasets. Machine learning, particularly using neural networks, is now widely adopted in practice even with the IoT paradigm; however, training neural networks at the edge, on IoT devices, remains elusive, mainly due to computational requirements. Furthermore, effective training requires large quantities of data and privacy concerns restrict accessible data. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method leveraging a blockchain and federated learning to train neural networks at the edge effectively bypassing these issues and providing additional benefits such as distributing training across multiple devices. Federated learning trains networks without storing any data and aggregates multiple networks, trained on unique data, forming a global network via a centralized server. By leveraging the decentralized nature of a blockchain, this centralized server is replaced by a P2P network, removing the need for a trusted centralized server and enabling the learning process to be distributed across participating devices. Our results show that networks trained in such a manner have negligible differences in accuracy compared to traditionally trained networks on IoT devices and are less prone to overfitting. Blockchain is the foundation of all cryptocurrencies, while machine learning (ML) is one of the most popular technologies with a wide range of possibilities. Blockchain may be improved and made more effective by using ML. Even though blockchain technology uses encryption to safeguard data, it is not completely reliable. Various elements, including the particular use case, the type of data, and legal constraints can determine whether it is suitable for keeping private and sensitive data. While there may be benefits, it is important to take into account possible hazards and abide by privacy and security laws. The blockchain itself is secure, but additional applications and layers are not. In terms of security, ML can aid in the development of blockchain applications. Therefore, a critical investigation is required to better understand the function of ML and blockchain in enhancing security. This study examines the current situation, evaluates the articles it contains, and presents an overview of the security issues. Despite their existing limitations, the papers included from 2012 to 2022 highlighted the importance of ML's impact on blockchain security. In this paper, we analyzed a dataset of over 2000 crypto-assets to assess their credit risk by computing their probability of death using the daily range. Unlike conventional low-frequency volatility models that only utilize close-to-close prices, the daily range incorporates all the information provided in traditional daily datasets, including the open-high-low-close (OHLC) prices for each asset. We evaluated the accuracy of the probability of death estimated with the daily range against various forecasting models, including credit scoring models, machine learning models, and time-series-based models. Our study considered different definitions of "dead coins" and various forecasting horizons. Our results indicate that credit scoring models and machine learning methods incorporating lagged trading volumes and online searches were the best models for short-term horizons up to 30 days. Conversely, time-series models using the daily range were more appropriate for longer term forecasts, up to one year. Additionally, our analysis revealed that the models using the daily range signaled, far in advance, the weakened credit position of the crypto derivatives trading platform FTX, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States on 11 November 2022. The integration of communication networks and the internet of industrial control in Industrial Control System (ICS) increases their vulnerability to cyber attacks, causing devastating outcomes. Traditional Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) largely rely on predefined models and are trained mostly on specific cyber attacks, which means the traditional IDS cannot cope with unknown attacks. Additionally, most IDS do not consider the imbalanced nature of ICS datasets, thus suffering from low accuracy and high False Positive Rates when being put to use. In this paper, we propose the NCO–double-layer DIFF_RF–OPFYTHON intrusion detection method for ICS, which consists of NCO modules, double-layer DIFF_RF modules, and OPFYTHON modules. Detected traffic will be divided into three categories by the double-layer DIFF_RF module: known attacks, unknown attacks, and normal traffic. Then, the known attacks will be classified into specific attacks by the OPFYTHON module according to the feature of attack traffic. Finally, we use the NCO module to improve the model input and enhance the accuracy of the model. The results show that the proposed method outperforms traditional intrusion detection methods, such as XGboost and SVM. The detection of unknown attacks is also considerable. The accuracy of the dataset used in this paper reaches 98.13%. The detection rates for unknown attacks and known attacks reach 98.21% and 95.1%, respectively. Online toxic discourses could result in conflicts between groups or harm to online communities. Hate speech is complex and multifaceted harmful or offensive content targeting individuals or groups. Existing literature reviews have generally focused on a particular category of hate speech, and to the best of our knowledge, no review has been dedicated to hate speech datasets. This paper systematically reviews textual hate speech detection systems and highlights their primary datasets, textual features, and machine learning models. The results of this literature review are integrated with content analysis, resulting in several themes for 138 relevant papers. This study shows several approaches that do not provide consistent results in various hate speech categories. The most dominant sets of methods combine more than one deep learning model. Moreover, the analysis of several hate speech datasets shows that many datasets are small in size and are not reliable for various tasks of hate speech detection. Therefore, this study provides the research community with insights and empirical evidence on the intrinsic properties of hate speech and helps communities identify topics for future work. Facial emotion recognition (FER) is an emerging and significant research area in the pattern recognition domain. In daily life, the role of non-verbal communication is significant, and in overall communication, its involvement is around 55% to 93%. Facial emotion analysis is efficiently used in surveillance videos, expression analysis, gesture recognition, smart homes, computer games, depression treatment, patient monitoring, anxiety, detecting lies, psychoanalysis, paralinguistic communication, detecting operator fatigue and robotics. In this paper, we present a detailed review on FER. The literature is collected from different reputable research published during the current decade. This review is based on conventional machine learning (ML) and various deep learning (DL) approaches. Further, different FER datasets for evaluation metrics that are publicly available are discussed and compared with benchmark results. This paper provides a holistic review of FER using traditional ML and DL methods to highlight the future gap in this domain for new researchers. Finally, this review work is a guidebook and very helpful for young researchers in the FER area, providing a general understating and basic knowledge of the current state-of-the-art methods, and to experienced researchers looking for productive directions for future work.
