This study aimed to explore the effect of induced electric field (IEF) treatment on acid hydrolysis of corn starch by altering the connection modes of sample coils of a 4-reactor IEF system. Results suggested that IEF treatment could enhance the hydrolysis of corn starch and series connection (1. RRRR, η = 16 E Si 2 P in 4 Z Si + Z load ) exhibited higher energy efficiency than parallel (9. (RRRR), η = 4 E Si 2 P in Z Si + 4 Z load ), thus contributing to more extensive hydrolysis. Although no new functional group was formed, the starch granules were partially cracked into pieces and the crystallinity was slightly increased after IEF-assisted hydrolysis. Differential scanning calorimetry results indicated that IEF-assisted hydrolysis increased the gelatinization temperatures but decreased the enthalpy of starch, with a greatest variation was observed by series connection. Rapid visco-analysis showed that IEF-assisted hydrolysis greatly decreased the pasting viscosity of corn starch and also series connection showed the strongest reduction. The obtained results could provide a theoretical guide for the applications of IEF technology in biomaterial processing. A novel electromagnetic heat extraction method was presented, whereby mandarin peels residue solution was located in a winding coil subjected to an oscillating magnetic field, and the pectin was extracted under appropriate conditions. Numerical relationships between applied magnetic field and induced electric field (IEF) in the extraction process were elaborated. The results showed that the induced current density, IEF and terminal temperature increased with increasing magnetic field. The maximum current density of 0.35 A/cm corresponds to the highest terminal temperature of 84.6 °C and IEF intensity of 26.6 V/cm. When magnetic field intensity was 1.39 T and the extraction time was 15 min, the maximum yield of pectin reached 9.16 %. In addition, all treatments impacted the ash content, protein content, water-holding capacity (WHC), and oil-holding capacity (OHC) of the obtained pectin. The pectin extracted by electromagnetic heat had the lowest DE value of 71.3 % with 126.55 kDa molecular weight, while the GalA content was at the highest level of 76.18 %. After different treatments, the composition of pectin monosaccharides changed, but there were slight differences in the composition of pectin polysaccharides. Moreover, the electromagnetic heat extracted pectin had light color and an obvious surface fragmentation of the peel residue. • Array-induced voltages and conventional heating were used for pectin extraction. • Differential effect on the extraction caused by the layout of the induced voltages. • Physicochemical properties and morphology of the pectin were investigated. • Neutral sugars, molecular weight, and esterification degree were affected. Array-induced voltage was used to enhance the extraction of pectin from grapefruit peel. The voltages induced by synchronous alternating magnetic fluxes as stimulus, provided an efficient extraction approach. The dynamics of pectin extraction is described by a pseudo-first-order model. The pectin yield and extraction rate of pectin depended on the vector of the in-phase and reverse-phase voltages. The transposed arrangement of the voltages had no significant influence on the pectin extraction rate. The maximum yield of 10.34%, obtained at 1000 V, a 0° phase difference and a 3 × 3 in-phase voltage array, was 5.74- and 1.3-fold higher than that of the control (0 V) and conventional heating method, respectively. This approach led to a rapid release of pectin with lower neutral sugar content, average molecular weight, Galacturonic acid content, esterification degree, and dynamic viscosity as a result of local heating by the voltage sources (potential hotspots) in the sample solution. To better understand the correlation between structure and properties in thermoplastic starch biopolymer blend films, the effects of amylose content, chain length distribution of amylopectin and molecular orientation of thermoplastic sweet potato starch (TSPS) and thermoplastic pea starch (TPES) on microstructure and functional properties of thermoplastic starch biopolymer blend films were studied. After thermoplastic extrusion, the amylose contents of TSPS and TPES decreased by 16.10 % and 13.13 %, respectively. The proportion of the chains with the degree of polymerization between 9 and 24 of amylopectin in TSPS and TPES increased from 67.61 % to 69.50 %, and from 69.51 % to 71.06 %, respectively. As a result, the degree of crystallinity and molecular orientation of TSPS and TPES films increased as compared to sweet potato starch and pea starch films. The thermoplastic starch biopolymer blend films possessed a more homogeneous and compacter network. The tensile strength and water resistance of thermoplastic starch biopolymer blend films increased significantly, whereas thickness and elongation at break of thermoplastic starch biopolymer blend films decreased significantly. • The structure-function relationship of thermoplastic starch films was analyzed. • Thermoplastic starch films showed higher molecular orientation and crystallinity. • The chains with DP between 9 and 24 and molecular orientation were the dominant factors. • Thermoplastic starch films showed a better tensile strength and water resistance. To illustrate the correlations between molecular structures and the film-forming properties of thermoplastic starch from various botanical sources, starches from cereal, tuber and legume were modified by thermoplastic extrusion and the corresponding thermoplastic starch films were prepared including thermoplastic corn starch (TCS), thermoplastic rice starch (TRS), thermoplastic sweet potato starch (TSPS), thermoplastic cassava starch (TCAS) and thermoplastic pea starch (TPES) films. TPES film displayed a higher tensile strength (6.28 MPa) and stronger water resistance, such as lower water solubility (15.70 %), water absorption (42.35 %), and water vapor permeability (0.285 g·mm· h −1· m −2·kPa−1) due to higher contents of amylose and B 1 chains. TCAS showed a smoother and more amorphous film due to higher amylopectin content, resulting higher elongation at break and larger opacity. TCS film was the most transparent due to a compacter network and more ordered crystallinity structure, which was suit for the packaging of fresh vegetables and aquatic products, whereas TCAS film was the opaquest, which protected package foods from light such as meat products, etc. The outcome would provide an innovative theory to regulate accurately the functional properties of thermoplastic starch films for different food needs. • The structure-function relationship of thermoplastic starch films was studied. • TPES film with higher contents of amylose and B1 chains displayed a stiffer structure. • TPES film displayed a stronger water resistance with higher amylose content and B1 chains. • TCAS film with higher amylopectin showed a higher elongation at break and opacity. • TCS film was the most transparent due to more ordered crystallinity structure. To explore an effective and economic method to prepare higher contents of resistant starch (RS), different enzyme treatments including single pullulanase (PUL), commercial α-amylase (AA) or/and β-amylase (BA) with PUL, and malt endogenous amylase (MA) with PUL were used and the structural, physicochemical properties and digestibility of all modified starches (MS) were compared. All the enzyme-treated starches displayed a mixture of B and V-type diffraction patterns. The MA/PUL-MS showed higher V-type diffraction peak intensity as compared to other modified starches. Compared to the combination of commercial enzyme treatment, the combination of malt enzyme treatment led to higher apparent amylose contents (45.56%), RS content (53.93%) and thermal stability (302 °C), whereas it possessed lower solubility indices and predicted glycaemic index. The apparent viscosity and shear resistance of MA/PUL-MS were lower than that of AA/PUL-MS, whereas that of MA/PUL-MS was higher than that of BA/PUL-MS and BA/AA/PUL-MS. Manipulating the dispersibility and reactivity of two-dimensional nanomaterials in collagen fibers (CFs) matrix has aroused attention in the fabrication of multifunctional collagen-based nanocomposites. Here, α‑zirconium phosphate nanoplatelets (ZrP NPs) were surface-functionalized with gallic acid (GA) to afford ZrP–GA NPs for engineering CFs matrix. The influence of ZrP–GA NPs on the ultraviolet barrier, antibacterial, and flame-retardant properties of resultant CFs matrix were investigated. Microstructural analysis revealed that ZrP–GA NPs were dispersed and bound within the collagen fibrils and onto the collagen strands in the CFs matrix. The resultant CFs matrix also maintained typical D -periodic structures of collagen fibrils and native branching and interwoven structures of CFs networks with increased porosity and enhanced ultraviolet barrier properties. Inhibition zone testing presented excellent antibacterial activities of the CFs matrix owing to surface grafting of antibacterial GA. Thanks to enhanced dispersion and binding of ZrP NPs with the CFs matrix by surface-functionalization with GA, the resultant CFs matrix reduced the peak heat release rate and the total heat release by 42.9 % and 39.0 %, respectively, highlighting improved flame-retardant properties. We envision that two-dimensional nanomaterials possess great potential in developing reasonable collagen-based nanocomposites towards the manufacture of emergent multifunctional collagen fibers-based wearable electronics. This study focused on improving activity and stability of industrial lipases by means of enzymatic immobilization onto spherelike bacterial cellulose (SBC) newly synthesized by a particular bacterial strain ( Gluconacetobacter xylinus, JCM 9730). The results revealed that immobilizing lipases onto aldehyde-modified SBC with a size of 6.10 ± 0.50 mm could lead to two optimal hydrolytic activities of lipases under both acidic (pH 5) and alkaline conditions (pH 8), which was superior to free lipases that only exhibited an alkaline activity at pH 9. In addition, immobilizing lipases onto SBC could also achieve an improved active temperature below 30 °C for lipases, which would help to reduce the energy consumption in the industrial production. Overall, this novel biomaterial has great potential as a green carrier for the immobilization of industrial lipases to enhance the recycling hydrolytic capability of oils and fats in various industrial divisions. Herein, a multistage induced electric field (IEF) combined with a continuous-flow reactor was utilized to assist the acid hydrolysis of corn, potato, and waxy corn starch for avoiding plate corrosion and heavy metal leakage. It was found that adding IEF stages was beneficial to improve the hydrolysis efficiency. Treating potato, corn, and waxy corn starch via continuous-flow IEF increased the reducing sugar contents up to 78.76 %, 57.86 %, and 66.18 %, respectively. The electrical conductivity of starch grew with the reaction stages, while starch yield demonstrated the opposite trend. Treated starch had higher solubility and gelatinization peak temperature than native starch, with the gelatinization enthalpy showing fluctuations. Meanwhile, the swelling power decreased as the number of IEF stages was increased. Observations of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the treated starch became more ordered, and crystalline regions were destroyed to various degrees with pores forming on particle surfaces. This study evaluated the effectiveness of induced electric field (IEF) as a novel electrotechnology to assist dilute acid pretreatment of wheat straw (WS) at atmospheric pressure and low temperature (90 °C). The effects of acid concentration and duration on cellulose recovery, hemicellulose and lignin removal were investigated. Meanwhile, the differences between IEF pretreatment and hydrothermal pretreatment were compared by quantitative and qualitative analysis. The optimal pretreatment condition was acid concentration 1 % with the period of 5 h. Under the parameters, the hemicellulose removal of WS after IEF pretreatment was up to 73.6 %, and the enzymatic efficiency was 55.8 %. In addition, the irregular surface morphology, diminished functional groups associated with hemicellulose, increased specific surface area and pore volume, as well as improved thermal stability of the residual WS support the remarkable effect of IEF pretreatment. The feasibility of IEF pretreatment is might be due to the fact that the magneto-induced electric field promotes ionization of H + and formation of hydrated hydrogen ions, increasing the acidity of the medium. Secondly, electroporation disrupts the anti-degradation structure of WS and increases the accessibility of cellulose to cellulases. It indicated that IEF is a green and efficient strategy for assisting the separation of hemicellulose from lignocellulose. Due to the serious bacterial infection of skin and the waste of petroleum-based materials, there is an urgent need to develop natural biodegradable wound dressings with high antibacterial activity. Phosvitin (PSV) has shown its natural antioxidant and antibacterial properties, making it an excellent material for preparing wound healing dressings. In this study, we investigated the effect of magnetic field on the preparation of PSV-Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) composite hydrogels in 1-Allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl) system. The results showed that the prepared hydrogels exhibited homogeneous surface structure, suitable swelling capacity and elasticity modulus, and sufficient thermal stability. The excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities of hydrogels were mainly resulting from AmimCl and PSV, respectively, and the properties were enhanced after magnetic field treatment. The proteomics analysis indicated that AmimCl can readily penetrate the biological membranes of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), upsetting the metabolism and reducing the virulence. The hydrogels showed great blood compatibility. Compared with the commercial materials, the 5 mT-treated hydrogels presented a comparable wound healing rate in the full-thickness skin injury model. On day 7, the wound healing rate of the 5 mT group reached approximately 84.40 %, which was significantly higher than that of the control group, 72.88 % (P < 0.05). In conclusion, our work provides experience for the development of biodegradable materials combined in ionic liquids and magnetic field, and explores their applications in wound healing dressings. Chinese giant salamander skin collagen (CGSSC) was successfully conjugated with glucose (Glu)/xylose (Xy) by ultrasound Maillard reaction (MR) in nature deep eutectic solvents (NADES). The effects of ultrasound and reducing sugar types on the degree graft (DG) of MR products (MRPs), as well as the influence of DG on the structure and functional properties of MRPs were investigated. The results indicated that the ultrasound assisted could markedly enhance the MR of CGSSC, and low molecular weight reducing sugars were more reactive in MR. The ultrasound MR significantly changed the microstructure, secondary and tertiary structures of CGSSC. Moreover, the free sulfhydryl content of MRPs were increased, thus enhancing the surface hydrophobicity, emulsifying properties and antioxidant activity, which were positively correlated with DG. These findings provided theoretical insights into the effects of ultrasound assisted and different sugar types on the functional properties of collagen induced by MR. Verticillium wilt of cotton is a very serious soil-borne disease and there is no effective control method. The mechanism of Gossypium hirsutum thaumatin-like protein 1(GhTLP1) in upland cotton regulating Verticillium wilt resistance has been an uncovered research approach. GhTLP1 is mainly localized in the cell wall. Overexpression of GhTLP1 significantly enhanced Arabidopsis plants resistance to Verticillium dahliae , while its homologous mutant tlp1 in Arabidopsis was more susceptible to the pathogen, and the heterologous complement line (EC) recovered resistance to V. dahliae. GhTLP1 responds to jasmonate acid (JA) and abscisic acid (ABA) hormones and regulates mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway-plant pathway to enhance Arabidopsis plants resistance to V. dahliae. Silencing GhTLP1 resulted decrease in cotton plants resistance to V. dahliae. Moreover, the mutation of GhTLP1 at site Tyr97 and Tyr199 with the phosphorylation also decreased plant resistance to V. dahliae. Therefore, GhTLP1 phosphorylation was observed important in cotton plants against V. dahliae. Further analysis demonstrated that GhTLP1 interacted with gossypium hirsutum laccase 14 (GhLAC14) to enhance plants resistance to V. dahliae. Silencing GhLAC14 resulted decrease in cotton plants resistance to V. dahliae. Here, we propose that GhTLP1 is a potential molecular target for improving resistance to Verticillium wilt in cotton. Abstract: The conjugation reaction between phosvitin (Pv) and dextran (Dex) in an aqueous solution at the initial stage of Maillard reaction was investigated in this study. The formation of Pv–Dex conjugates was indirectly traced by measuring the absorbance at 200nm in the UV-vis spectrophotometer. The content of free amino groups in the glycosylated Pv decreased to 77.4% after reaction for 6h. The new band near the loading end of SDS-PAGE gel also suggested the high molecular weight products developed after conjugation. The shift of the main peak of Pv in size exclusion-high performance liquid chromatography from 9.16min to 8.87min and the minor peak from 6.56min to 6.13min confirmed the formation of covalent conjugates. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra demonstrated that significant changes of the secondary structure occurred to the grafted Pv. The optimum conjugation condition chosen was per Pv (5mg/ml) glycosylated with 4-fold dextran (Mw, 40kDa) at 100°C for 6h. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
