Alumina-based multilayer laminates with layers of varied porosities and ceramic fiber reinforcements, which can be achieved by including paper-derived ceramic layers, are interesting candidates for chemically stable and thermal shock resistant materials. In order to investigate the complex sintering behavior of these laminates, the sintering of each alumina layer contained within a laminate, each one with its individual sintering anisotropy and sintering shrinkage, has to be considered separately. For this purpose, sintering curves are determined by dilatometry measurements, serving a consecutive examination by an analytical model. Modeling parameters specific to each layer, are applied in finite-element-type sintering simulations for symmetrical multilayer laminates. Differences in the sintering shrinkages may cause internal stresses at layer interfaces and, in turn, may influence the thermal and mechanical properties of multilayer laminates after sintering. Accordingly, the prediction of developing internal stresses within alumina-based multilayer laminates by the presented sintering simulations is a key aspect of this study. Through the pyrolysis of cellulose-based paper templates infiltrated with a suitable polymer precursor, ceramic composites exhibiting a paper-like structure can be conveniently prepared. Such polymer-derived ceramic papers (PDCPs) unite the unique morphology of regular cellulose papers with the properties of the ceramic system utilized. Here, two paper templates, made from eucalyptus and cotton, respectively, were infiltrated with two polysilazane-based polymer precursors modified with either Fe, Ni, or Pd and converted into multi-phasic ceramic papers. In addition to the type of paper template, precursor composition, and transition metal used, the present study aims to rationalize the influence of pyrolysis temperature and atmosphere on the morphology, microstructure, and phase composition of the ceramic papers generated. For this purpose, scanning electron microscopy, SEM, and (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, (S)TEM, in conjunction with EDS analyses were used to elucidate the microstructural features of the ceramic composites in great detail. It is shown that the transition metals precipitate as nanosized metallic particles and silicides in the case of Pd and Ni, while the introduction of Fe features oxide and carbide phases in addition to that. Moreover, the metals catalyze both the graphitization of the cellulose fibers and, at higher temperatures, the generation of whisker-like Si-based nanostructures composed of either SiC or Si 3 N 4 , depending on the processing atmosphere used. This paper describes the fabrication and characterization of novel preceramic paper-derived functionally graded materials (FGMs) based on Ti 3 (Si,Al)C 2 MAX phase. The FGMs with different architecture were fabricated via spark plasma sintering of stacked preceramic papers at 1250 °C for 5 min. Microstructure, phase composition and elemental distribution were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively. Oxidation tests were performed in air at 1300 °C for 5 h. FGMs containing Al- and Si-enriched MAX-phase layers were formed. The fabricated materials exhibit high flexural strength (over 600 MPa), which are dependent on microstructure and composition of individual layers as well as the architecture of composites. It was found that texturing of MAX phase grains during SPS results in anisotropic hardness of the composite. The difference in the composition of the individual layers also provides a hardness gradient in the composite. It was shown that the formation of the outer layer from the Al-enriched Ti 3 Al(Si)C 2 MAX phase increases the corrosion resistance of Ti 3 SiC 2 -based composites. In this study, additive-manufactured silicon carbide preforms were joined and densified by reaction bonding via liquid silicon infiltration. The silicon carbide preforms were first printed by binder jetting additive manufacturing. To demonstrate concurrent joining and densification, two preforms with carbon or parchment papers at the interface were concurrently joined and infiltrated by liquid silicon. Results showed a robust interface with thicknesses ranging from 150 to 500 µm, depending on the paper type and the number of paper layers. High-energy synchrotron X-ray revealed that β-phase silicon carbide was formed inside the interface. Finally, two additively manufactured samples with complicated channel geometry were successfully joined. Energy dispersive spectroscopy of the interface of the channeled samples showed a consistent and robust joining. This concurrent approach of joining and densification enables efficiency improvement of fabricating silicon carbide parts with complicated geometries and widens geometry freedom for additive manufacturing of silicon carbide. In the present study, a C/SiFeN(O)-based ceramic paper with in situ generated hierarchical micro/nano-morphology was prepared upon thermal treatment of a cellulose-base paper surface-modified with a polymeric single-source precursor prepared from perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) and iron(II) acetylacetonate (Fe(acac) 2 ). The ammonolysis at 1000 °C of the paper/precursor hybrid materials leads to a C/SiFeN(O)-based ceramic paper which exhibits the same morphology as that of the cellulose paper. Subsequent annealing of the ceramic paper in nitrogen atmosphere at temperatures from 1200 to 1400 °C results in the in-situ generation of ultra-long silicon nitride nanowires with aspect ratios in the range of 10 3 on the surface and in the macropores of the ceramic paper. The nanowires exhibit round Fe 3 Si tips at the end, indicating that the growth occurred via iron-catalyzed VLS (vapor-liquid-solid) mechanism. The combination of single-source precursor, porous template and in situ VLS growth of 1D nanostructures provides a convenient one-pot synthesis approach to produce ceramic nanocomposites with hierarchical morphologies. Though graphite paper exhibits unique thermal conduction characteristics, a backing layer is needed to provide its structural rigidity. In the present study, the graphite paper is bonded to alumina substrate using an active brazing technique. The thermal diffusivity of graphite paper and of alumina/braze/graphite joint is measured. The thermal diffusivity of the alumina/braze/graphite joint is slightly higher than that of alumina substrate alone, and much higher than that of the graphite paper perpendicular to the planar direction. Research laboratories worldwide use the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique for sintering metallic and ceramic matrix composites. Typically, the SPS sintered parts are low circular cylinders (discs). The upscaling and industrialization of SPS technology face two challenges: the limitation of shaping non-cylindrical parts and the inhomogeneous sintering of large-sized products. This paper addresses these challenges in sintering axisymmetric shells within an SPS setup with improved thermal insulation. The paper considers the sintering of a 75 mm shell as a case study. The shell material is a zirconia-carbon nanotube composite. Finite element analysis revealed that homogeneous sintering of such a shell requires careful thermal insulation of the entire setup. Additive Manufacturing (AM), as an adjunct and extension of conventional equivalent and subtractive manufacturing technologies, aims to fabricate complex shapes and hollow structures. Among the various techniques of AM, vat photopolymerization (VP) has wide application due to high precision (∼μm), high surface quality, and high density. However, the density and mechanical properties of VP additive-manufactured ceramics are comparatively lower than that of conventional manufacturing techniques. This discrepancy mainly arises from the presence of more manufactured defects in VP additive-manufactured ceramics. In this paper, a comprehensive review of recent advances in defects specific to VP additive-manufactured ceramic is presented. Characterization and quantitative analysis of defects by X-CT are highlighted. Furthermore, control methods for managing these defects are summarized. Finally, current challenges and perspectives on the future research direction are discussed and provided. Ultrafast high-temperature heating methods based on the Joule heating of carbon heaters can dramatically shorten the time required for material synthesis/sintering. However, commonly used porous carbon heaters cannot provide stable high temperatures in air, limiting their applicability to the processing of atmosphere-sensitive materials. In this study, we present a novel configuration for ultrafast high-temperature heating in air using commercial graphite paper. This configuration enables stable high temperatures of ~1330–2230 °C in air, on the time-scale of minutes, and ultrafast heating rates, reaching ~104 oC/min. We describe the mechanism behind the excellent performance of our proposed configuration, and further demonstrate its flexibility and controllability by considering ultrafast high-temperature sintering of ZnO ceramics with tunable microstructures using different heating profiles. Our configuration provides a complementary approach to simplifying the ultrafast high-temperature heating process, reducing costs, and meeting the requirements of synthesis/sintering in air. Abstract: Production of porous anorthite ceramics from mixtures of paper processing residues and three different clays are investigated. Suitability of three different clays such as enriched clay, commercial clay and fireclay for manufacturing of anorthite based lightweight refractory bricks was studied. Porous character to the ceramic was provided by addition of paper processing residues (PPR). Samples with 30–40wt% PPR fired at 1200–1400°C contained anorthite (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2) as major phase and some minor secondary phases such as mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) or gehlenite (2CaO·Al2O3·SiO2), depending on the calcite to clay ratio. Anorthite formation for all clay types was quite successful in samples with 30–40wt% of paper residues fired at 1300°C. A higher firing temperature of 1400°C was needed for the fireclay added samples to produce a well sintered product with large pores. Gehlenite phase occurred mostly at lower temperatures and in samples containing higher amount of calcium (50wt% PPR). Compressive strength of compacted and fired pellets consisting of mainly anorthite ranged from 8 to 43MPa. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

With the increasing demand for high energy density and reliable dielectric capacitors in the field of power electronics, the research and manufacture of ceramic capacitor materials face significant challenges. At present, the traditional design ideas of dielectric ceramic materials have gradually formalized, and the system is complex and similar, whether it can design dielectric ceramic materials with high performance from a new viewpoint and explore the underlying mechanism remains a great challenge. This paper is based on ceramic capacitors with high energy storage performance, a series of high-entropy perovskite oxide ceramics designed by the concept of "entropy engineering" in the past five years are reviewed. The relationship between microstructure and macroscopic energy storage performance of materials is discussed based on the four effects of high-entropy ceramics. We predict that "entropy engineering" will be a successful strategy to break through the bottleneck of dielectric materials with high energy storage performance. In this paper, the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties of SiCN ceramics with a shellular structure prepared by 3D printing technology (DLP) at different pyrolysis temperatures were investigated. The research shows that polarization loss and multiple reflections are the principal reasons for the improvement in sample absorption performance. The shellular structure is favorable for the multiple reflections and scattering of electromagnetic wave inside the material. The turbostratic carbon, graphitic carbon and SiC generated by pyrolysis are conducive to improving the dielectric loss of the sample, adjusting its impedance matching performance and improving its absorption performance. The RL min of SiCN-1200 reaches − 21.12 dB (3.22 mm), and the effective band width is 4.20 GHz, covering the whole X-band. The excellent EMW absorption performance of DLP-SiCN ceramics, together with additive manufacturing, enable the integration of material, structure and function within a single component. Carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide ceramic matrix composites (C f /SiC composites) have a wide range of applications in aerospace, nuclear energy, braking systems owing to its excellent mechanical performance. Nevertheless, the hardness, brittleness, heterogeneity, and anisotropy of C f /SiC composites give rise to difficulties in machining them. In addition, the characterization and formation mechanism of surface damage in the grinding of C f /SiC composites have not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this paper is to provide a characterization method for surface damage of C f /SiC composites and an evaluation index for surface edge chipping damage (SECD) through conventional scratching (CS) / ultrasonic vibration assisted scratching (UVAS) tests with single abrasive. Towards revealing the surface damage behavior of C f /SiC composites during scratching, as well as the impact of fiber orientation on surface damage. The findings indicate that main forms of surface damage of C f /SiC composites in single abrasive scratching are fiber breakage, fiber fracture-shedding, fiber fracture, fiber-matrix interface debonding, interface fragmentation, matrix cracking, and matrix microcracks. Further, ultrasonic vibration could help to suppress the SECD, and the SECD factor was smallest when scratching along the perpendicular fiber. Furthermore, the fiber orientation can significantly affect the scratching force and cross-sectional area of scratches on C f /SiC composites via single abrasive scratching. The tangential scratching force was usually smaller as compared to the normal scratching force, and the cross-sectional area of scratches in UVAS is smaller than that in CS. Based on the above findings, this study elucidates the formation and evolution of surface damage after scratching under different fiber orientations, filling the research gap in surface damage under ultrasonic assisted machining of C f /SiC composites and providing technical guidance for the machining. In this paper, the effects of frequency on the flash sintering behavior and microstructure of Li 6.4 Ga 0.2 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (0.2Ga-LLZO) were investigated. The results showed that an increase in frequency had little effect on the onset temperature, but this increase reduced the duration of the weak current stage the incubation stage. Moreover, this phenomenon led to a decrease in the power loss during the constant current stage. Scanning Electron Microscope images showed that the microstructure was symmetrically distributed, and the uniformity increased with increasing frequency. Finite element simulations and an IR thermocamera were used to analyze the temperatures of the specimens. The symmetric distribution of temperature during the flash sintering process was the root cause. The results of AC impedance spectroscopy showed that when the frequency of flash sintering was ≥ 400 Hz, the ionic conductivity of Ga-LLZO was greater than that of conventional sintering. In this paper, YOF was used as the sintering additive for obtaining MgAl 2 O 4 transparent ceramics with excellent optical properties. It is found that YOF enhances the densification of MgAl 2 O 4 ceramics. In addition, YOF can effectively suppress grain growth in the final stage because of the reduction of grain boundary energies and the pinning effect at the grain boundary region during the hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) process. Nevertheless, it is important to carefully control the content of YOF. Although the formation of a low amount of Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG) is advantageous because its grains are doing the pinning effect at the grain boundary, an excessive amount is not desired as it is likely to cause scattering. After optimizing the YOF content and sintering temperature, the final sample (4 mm thick after polishing) with 0.01 wt% YOF HIPed at 1550 °C is obtained, showing the high in-line transmittance of 82.6% at 400 nm and high flexural strength of 271.6 MPa. In this paper, the "flash brazing" of SiC is successfully achieved using FeCoCrNiCu alloy in air for seconds at an ultra-low furnace temperature of 400 ℃. The interface temperature reaches over 1000 ℃ in 1 s at an ultra-fast rate via the electric field assistance. The reaction layer of the joint consists mainly of Cr 23 C 6 and the silicides of Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu. With the increase of brazing holding time, Cu gradually precipitates from the alloy, and the shear strength of the joints first increases and then decreases. The maximum strength value is 80 MPa at the test temperature of 800 ℃. This approach could help significantly improve the efficiency of ceramic bonding and achieve low-temperature joining for high-temperature applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rare earth compounds (RE 2 O 3), typically Eu 2 O 3 and Gd 2 O 3 , are considered as absorbing materials due to their long chain neutron absorbing ability and high efficiency of neutron absorption. In this paper, a specifically designed x Eu 2 O 3 -(1-x)Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 (x = 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.85) composite ceramics with excellent thermal properties were synthesized through direct thermal decomposition reactions followed a high-temperature sintering method under vacuum conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy analysis indicated that the obtained ceramics consisted of monoclinic Eu 2 O 3 and fluorite Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 phases. The hardness of x Eu 2 O 3 -(1-x)Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 ceramics (x = 0.8, 0.85) have no significantly changes in the test temperature range (25–350 °C). The thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) (7.3–10 ×10-6 K-1) are lower than Dy 2 TiO 5 (9.3–10.4 ×10-6 K-1), and the thermal expansion rate changes linearly with the increase of temperature, which indicates that the x Eu 2 O 3 -(1-x)Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 ceramics exhibit excellent high temperature phase stability. Furthermore, the range of thermal conductivities is from 0.96 W·m-1·K-1 to 2.02 W·m-1·K-1 (25–800 °C), which is higher than Dy 2 TiO 5 (0.27–0.55 W/m·K, 220–650 °C). Compared with the state-of-art Dy 2 TiO 5 ceramics, x Eu 2 O 3 -(1-x)Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 have superior thermal properties and are therefore expected to be the next generational of neutron absorbent materials used in ash rod. The present paper evaluates the machinability of brazed diamond tools for milling 3D SiC f /C-SiC composites. Defined three milling modes of fiber orientation, transverse, longitudinal, and perpendicular, and surfaces, SA (transverse and longitudinal), SB (transverse and perpendicular), and SC (longitudinal and perpendicular), are chosen to reveal factors influencing milling force and surface integrity. Besides, the removal process mechanism is analyzed through high-speed cameras. The results show that combining fiber orientations influences milling force waveform, whereas surface quality is related to fiber orientation and damage types. The lower cutting speeds obtain better surface quality on SA surfaces, while superior surface quality on SB and SC surfaces is attained with higher cutting speeds. Dominant damage modes include direct fiber breakage and matrix fragmentation. Moreover, the removal process is sequentially matrix cracking and fiber/matrix debonding, fiber breakage, and ultimate failure. In recent years, relaxor ferroelectric single crystals have attracted people's attention and research because of their excellent piezoelectric properties at morphotropic phase boundary(MPB). The ternary system Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O 3 -Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O 3 -PbTiO 3 (PIN-PMN-PT) crystals have higher Curie temperature and coercive field, which have the opportunity to be applied in high-temperature devices. The crystals of the rhombohedral phase have better stability, but their performance is not as good as that of the MPB component crystals. In this paper, the piezoelectric properties of rhombohedral PIN-PMN-28PT single crystals are improved by Sm3+ doping. The piezoelectric coefficient d 33 after AC polarization along [001] direction can reach 3125pC/N, which is 60% higher than that of undoped crystals. Meanwhile, the crystal exhibits excellent optical performance after DC polarization along [110] direction. The crystal has an effective electro-optic coefficient of 386 pm/V at room temperature and a stable frequency-dependent characteristic, which is expected to be an ideal material for electro-optic devices. Yaozhou Kiln is a famous ancient center for celadon production in China, located in present-day Shaanxi Province. While analyzing its olive-green celadon produced during the Song Dynasty, a common occurrence of brownish base (foot and bottom) was observed. This phenomenon can also be found in porcelain produced at other kilns in China and Vietnam. However, previous research has not systematically explored the coloration mechanism behind it. Through different analytical methods, coupled with reproduction firing experiments, this paper concludes that the brownish base is attributed to the diffusion of iron from the body and sand cushion into the thinly applied glaze on the base, as well as the crystallization formed by the combination of the sand cushion and the surface glaze. Factors influencing the depth of the brownish color include: (1) the iron content of the body; (2) the thickness of the base glaze; and (3) the sand cushion material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coated nuclear fuel particles, most commonly tri-structural isotropic (TRISO), are intended for use in advanced high temperature reactors. It is vital to understand the mechanical properties of each coating layer to accurately predict the performance of these fuel particles and how these might change at each stage of their lifecycle. This paper reports results of in-situ nanoindentation, with an emphasis on the structural SiC layer, along with microcantilever testing of the critical SiC-IPyC interface. At 1000 °C the hardness of the SiC layer is ∼75% lower than at room temperature implying significantly more plasticity at the reactor operating temperature. The elastic modulus was slightly lower at 1000 °C than at room temperature. Microcantilever fracture at the SiC-IPyC interface shows that failure occurs within the pyrolytic carbon layer rather than an interfacial "debonding" with a strength similar to that of bulk pyrolytic carbon. In this paper, we have successfully addressed the challenges of cracking and spalling in HfB 2 coatings during ablation through the novel synthesis of (Hf, Zr)B 2 solid solution coatings using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The ablation resistance of the coating exhibited an initially improving trend followed by a subsequently deterioration as the Zr content increased. When the Hf/Zr molar ratio in the (Hf, Zr)B 2 solid solution coating was 1:1, a thicker Hf-Zr-O amorphous oxide layer was formed during ablation, which acted as a barrier, preventing the inward diffusion of oxygen. As a result, the (Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5)B 2 solid solution coating exhibited superior ablation resistance with a mass ablation rate of only −0.216 mg/s and a linear rate of −0.089 µm/s. The significant disparity in refractive index between silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4) powder and resin poses a formidable challenge in the formulation of stable ceramic slurry with high solid content and low viscosity. This research paper systematically investigates the oxidation pretreatment of Si 3 N 4 powder and the modification process of the silane coupling agent, with a particular focus on their impacts on the rheological and curing properties of the ceramic slurry. Furthermore, the study thoroughly examines the effects of various functional group resin compounds, dispersant types, and dosages on the rheological and curing properties of the ceramic slurry. By optimizing the surface modification process of silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4) and formulating an appropriate composition for the silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4) slurry, this paper successfully prepares a Si 3 N 4 ceramic slurry with outstanding curing performance, low viscosity, and a solid content of 44 vol%. The application of photocuring molding technology enables the production of Si 3 N 4 ceramic components characterized by high precision, excellent surface quality, and intricate geometries. Moreover, this study establishes a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the refractive index of silicon nitride ceramic slurry and essential parameters, including photocuring process variables and slurry properties. Skorohod and Olevsky's constitutive relation for viscous sintering (SOVS) is employed to simulate the shrinkage and relative density evolution of ceramics during the sintering process. While this model effectively simulates shrinkage and density evolution, the original formulation of the SOVS model does not explicitly incorporate grain growth or microstructural evolution. This paper introduces an enhanced version of the SOVS model, incorporating a novel calibration method to obtain the temperature dependence of the viscosity parameter. It considers grain growth as well as the evolution of the microstructure by adding new parameters. Simulations were conducted using Code_Aster, an open-source finite element software, in conjunction with MFront, a tool for formulating material behaviour equations. Dilatometer tests were performed with probes of porcelain stoneware composition to calibrate the model. The preparation of dense single-phase boride ceramics has always been a challenge. In this paper, single-phase W 2 B 5 ceramic with excellent performance was successfully prepared using W 2 B 5 powder and SPS-HF technology. Under the sintering condition of 1800 °C and 50 MPa, a nearly dense W 2 B 5 ceramic material with excellent mechanical properties was obtained. The relative density of the as-sintered W 2 B 5 ceramic achieved 96.72 % without any sintering additive. Additionally, the Vickers hardness, fracture toughness as well as bending strength were 30 GPa (9.8 N), 5.39 MPa·m1/2 and 522.7 MPa, respectively. The outstanding hardness and bending strength of W 2 B 5 ceramic could be attributed to its monophase W 2 B 5 structure and high densification degree. The primary fracture mode of W 2 B 5 ceramic was transgranular fracture, and the toughening mechanisms included crack deflection, crack bridging, and crack branching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a novel strategy to fabricate porous calcium hex-aluminate (CA 6) ceramics using CaCl 2 -KCl as reactive medium. Effects of CaCl 2 -KCl content and sintering temperature on microstructure and properties of porous CA 6 ceramics are systematically studied. CaCl 2 -KCl serves as both a pore former and an additional source of CaO, eliminating the need for additional salt-washing treatment. By optimizing CaCl 2 -KCl content to 20 wt%, porous CA 6 ceramics with well cross-interlocking plate-like structures, possessing low thermal conductivity of 0.32 W·(m·K)−1 (1000°C), high apparent porosity of 68.28%, and desirable compressive strength of 6.76 MPa, are fabricated at 1300°C. This work not only validates the promising applicability of porous CA 6 materials for thermal insulation, but also introduces an auspicious fabrication methodology for thermal insulation materials. Continuous fibre reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are increasingly being employed in safety critical applications. As a result, their use in these applications requires the adoption of appropriate design methodologies that are able to consider their complex non-linear mechanical behaviour. In this paper, a simple but robust formulation for continuum damage model, thermodynamically consistent and written under plane stress condition, is proposed for a laminated 2D woven composite material. This model is implemented via the Classical Laminate Theory (CLT) extended to non-linear behaviour to predict the behaviour of different stacking sequences. In-plane tensile tests were performed on an oxide/oxide composite up to 1000 °C to fully identify the model. The procedure is described and used on tests at room temperature before being extended higher temperature tests. SiC/SiC (Silicon Carbide fiber reinforced Silicon Carbide) is widely used in aerospace and gas turbine fields due to its excellent resistance to high temperature, corrosion and low density. However, the difficult processing of SiC/SiC is the main factor limiting its further application. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel method for processing SiC/SiC using femtosecond laser combined with dynamic wet etching. A comparative analysis of the micro-pore morphology and elemental composition obtained through processing in air, water, and NaOH solution is presented. Demonstrates the excellent surface quality achieved with NaOH processing, which effectively reduces defects such as recast layers and microcracks. The results suggest that the operating mechanism involves the combined effects of a wet-oxygen coupling environment, high-temperature decomposition, localized chemical wet etching, and the influence of the liquid layer. Continuous silicon carbide fibers (SiC f) reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiC f /SiC CMCs) are promising thermostructural materials with a broad range of high-end technology applications. For the excellent performance of SiC f /SiC CMCs, the interphase plays a crucial role in tailoring the overall mechanical properties and service lifetime of SiC f /SiC CMCs. During the past decades, tremendous effort has been made to develop better interphase materials and deepen the understanding of their functions and mechanisms. In this paper, an overview of the latest advancements in a variety of interfacial coatings, including pyrolytic carbon, boron nitride, newly developed layered candidates, porous oxides and multilayers, is provided. Emphasis is placed on the engineering of constituents, microstructure and interphase thickness, as well as their effects on the mechanical properties and stability of SiC f /SiC CMCs. In this paper, we discuss the unique challenges posed by Silica f / Silica composite while measuring their thermal conductivity by using Transient Plane Source (TPS) method and specific heat by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). The measured thermal conductivity values were found reaching a plateau followed by a reduction at temperatures 800 °C and above. Thermal expansion characteristics as measured in Thermomechanical Analyzer (TMA) exhibited strong dependency on static force applied during experiments. Keeping in view the real life application of the developed Silica f /Silica composite, a novel method of sample preparation was implemented which restricted the sample compression at elevated temperatures during TPS experiments. Experiments utilizing DSC under linear and step heating with sample placement in alumina crucible yielded inconsistent values of specific heat (Cp). With further experimentation, the combination of step heating and direct placement of sample in platinum crucible was found most appropriate for accurate measurement of specific heat of Silica f / Silica. Ceramics from the magnesia-alumina-silica (MAS) system are common products of the ceramic industry. The phase composition of these systems can be rather complex, especially when feldspar is added as a flux, and thus attempts to correlate the composition and structure of these ceramics to their properties are quite rare, especially when considerable amounts of glass phase and sapphirine appear after firing. In this paper an attempt is made to correlate, for a talc-kaolin-alumina-feldspar mixture resulting in cordierite-sapphirine ceramics after firing to 1250 °C, the resulting elastic properties (Young's modulus), as determined via the impulse excitation technique (IET), with the phase composition, determined via X-ray diffraction (XRD). Moreover, it is shown how the evolution of the phase composition and microstructure is reflected in the temperature dependence of Young's modulus and damping during heating-cooling cycles with maximum temperatures ranging from 1000 to 1250 °C. Carbon/carbon (C/C) composites impress with their excellent high-temperature mechanical properties. In this paper, in order to simulate the complex service conditions of aerocraft thermal protection systems, an experimental platform for simultaneous ablation and tension was designed. The mechanical and ablation properties of the C/C composites were tested under an oxyacetylene flame at heat flux of 2185 kW/m2. Meanwhile, the mechanism of mutual influence of ablation and tensile loading was revealed by microstructural characterisation. By comparing the tension-only and ablation-only conditions, the results show that the strength of the C/C composites under ablation conditions decreased by 52.0%, which was associated with the crack propagation and porosity increase caused by flame. The tensile loading increased the linear and mass ablation rates by 21.8% and 82.9%, respectively, which was due to the interfacial damage caused by tensile stresses provides more channels for flame to enter the material interior, thus accelerating oxidative ablation. This paper proposes the preparation of a silicon carbide ceramic matrix composite toughened with three-dimensional graphene oxide-carbon nanotubes (3D GO-CNT) using direct ink writing and liquid silicon infiltration processes. The research focuses on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composite, emphasizing the toughening impact of varied GO-CNT ratios. When the GO-CNT ratio was 1:2, the mechanical properties of the material were optimal, with a flexural strength of 337.4 MPa and a fracture toughness of 4.58 MPa · m1/2, which were enhanced by 40.9% and 34.7%, respectively, compared to that of the pure silicon carbide matrix. Graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes can act as dispersants for each other enabling them to be uniformly distributed in the matrix. Key toughening mechanisms include GO/CNT pull-out, multiple microcracks, crack bridging, deflection, and branching. The sintering temperature of an oxide/oxide composite, comprising a barium aluminosilicate (BaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 or BAS) matrix reinforced with alumina fibers, is constrained to avoid a decrease in the mechanical properties of the fibers. This paper highlights the potential of sintering additives in lowering the sintering temperature of the hexagonal BAS (hexacelsian), thereby safeguarding the integrity of the fibers. Consequently, the role of sintering additives, MgO, TiO 2 , and B 2 O 3 , is investigated to determine their impact on the BAS matrix sintering. The addition of 1 wt% of these additives successfully achieved this objective, as confirmed through thermal and microstructural analyses. MgO and TiO 2 facilitated sintering kinetics through a solid-phase mechanism. Concerning the addition of B 2 O 3 , its effect on BAS sintering accelerated densification through a transient liquid-phase mechanism. Another consequence of incorporating these sintering additives is the destabilization of the hexagonal BAS. To reduce the influence of TGO on EBCs performance, the Yb 2 SiO 5 -Yb 2 O 3 -Si-SiC ceramic was prepared by tape casting and reactive melt infiltration in this paper. During high-temperature water vapor corrosion, the ceramic formed a unique layered oxide layer structure to protect the material. On one hand, TGO is consumed by the reaction of Yb 2 O 3 and Yb 2 SiO 5 with SiO 2 ; On the other, the structure makes no TGO layer between the oxidized and unoxidized regions, which means that even if the TGO layer is stripped, the material still has a dense Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 and Yb 2 SiO 5 mixed layer as a protective barrier. Flake graphite (FG) poses challenges for incorporation into castables due to its hydrophobic nature. In this paper, a strategy combining liquid-phase shear exfoliation (LPSE) with hydrothermal processing was proposed to produce hydrophilic graphene nanosheet/AlOOH nanofiber (GN/ANF) composite powders to address this issue. Under optimal shear exfoliation conditions, the yield of graphene nanosheets (GNs) reached up to 57%. Following a straightforward hydrothermal treatment, the water contact angle of as-prepared GN/ANF composite powders decreased to 53.1°, compared to 103.6° of the original FG. Benefiting from the hydrophilic properties of the composite powders and the homogeneous dispersion of GNs in MgO castables, the sample containing 0.5 wt% GNs exhibited better high-temperature performance than its counterparts. In order to improve the performance of polymer-derived ceramics and expand its application field, the formulation of the photosensitive resin was further optimized and on the basis of modification, the two-dimensional filler h -BN was introduced in this paper. It was found that both the content of PVSA in the photosensitive resin and the introduction of h -BN had remarkable impacts on the properties of the polymer-derived ceramics. When the h -BN content in the PVSA photosensitive resin was 1 wt%, the bending strength and fracture toughness of the ceramic sample after pyrolysis reached 252.4 ± 12.2 MPa and 2.7 ± 0.2 MPa·m1/2, respectively. With the increase of h -BN content, the thermal conductivity of the composite ceramics increased from 0.44 W·m−1·K−1 to 5.34 W·m−1·K−1. This paper deals with the effect of hydroxylated boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) incorporation on the microstructural and mechanical features of zirconia ceramics. Few-layered BNNS were synthesized via a simple hydroxide-assisted planetary ball milling exfoliation technique. 3 mol% yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) with 2.5 vol% BNNS powders were prepared by an environmentally friendly process in water, and spark-plasma sintered at three temperatures to explore the in-situ reduction of the functionalized BNNS. An exhaustive study by (S)TEM techniques was performed to elucidate the influence of the sintering temperature on the matrix and the 3Y-TZP/BNNS interfaces, revealing that BNNS were homogeneously distributed throughout the matrix with an abrupt transition at 3Y-TZP/BNNS interfaces. BNNS effectively hindered slow crack growth, thus increasing the composite's crack growth resistance by about 30 %. A 1 MPa·m1/2 rising R-curve was also induced by crack bridging. Abstract: A porcelain body traditionally used to produce ceramic art and design objects was re-formulated using additional waste paper. The aim of this study was to develop knowledge into the technological properties of paper-composite porcelain in its green state, for use within the traditional practices of ceramic art and design production. Characterisation was made by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Two different production methods used by potters, slip casting and free-hand pressing, were used. The presence of the paper fibre, the paper type and the content amount are the important factors in strengthening development. Significant differences were found in relation to the content amount of paper fibre, between the mother porcelain body and the different content amount of paper fibre in the paper-composite porcelain body. In this paper, the damage progression and fracture behavior in notched cross-ply SiC/SiC composites were investigated using the in situ digital image correlation (DIC) and acoustic emission (AE) techniques. Under tensile loading, the mechanical properties of composite's elastic modulus, proportional limit stress (PLS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and fracture strain were obtained for non-notched, single-hole, double-holes, and four-holes samples. Based on the analysis of composite's tangent modulus, the nonlinear tensile stress-strain curves were divided into three main domains, relating with internal multiple damage mechanisms observed using the in situ DIC and AE. Effects of the number and location of the circular holes on the full-filed composite's damage and strain evolution, AE energy and ring-down count were investigated. After tensile fracture, the composite's macro fracture morphology and micro damage mechanisms were observed under the scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). Numerical modeling of tensile damage and fracture process of different notched samples were conducted using the extend finite element method (XFEM). Digital light processing (DLP), derived from stereolithography (SL), is a lithography-based additive manufacturing (AM) process that offers the ability to tailor scaffold shape, size, material, and biometrics of fabricated scaffolds to patient requirements. The additive manufacturing of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) bioceramic scaffolds via DLP is explored in the proceeding research paper. Particularly, the role of exposure intensity and exposure time on resultant scaffold quality and mechanical properties is studied. Increased exposure intensity results in an increased deviation from the designed lattice structure and thus an increase in compressive strength. Scaffolds produced with the highest exposure intensity, resulted in a 27.6 % error increase in mean beam diameter, resulting from an increased scattering effect, penetration depth, and over-curing of peripheral slurry. TCP scaffolds with an exposure time of 3.5 s and exposure intensity of 40 mW/cm2 possessed the highest print accuracy, resulting in the lowest average compressive strength – 82 MPa for the scaffolds of cube structure and 48 MPa for the ones of I-WP structure. Digital light processing (DLP) is an effective additive manufacturing (AM) method applicable for bioceramics. This study focuses on the influence of light exposure intensity on scaffold quality and compressive strength. The increase of exposure intensity can improve the compressive strength with the sacrifice of structure accuracy. This paper elucidates the mechanism of BN as sintering additive and the enhancement for LLZO performance. The introduction of the sintering additive boron nitride (BN) to Li 6.25 Ga 0.25 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LGLZO) can effectively eliminate the insulating phase Li 2 CO 3 and form the liquid phase Li 3 BO 3 along the grain boundaries, which significantly enhances the relative density (from 72.4% to 92.9%), ionic conductivity (from 1.3 × 10 − 5 to 6.7 × 10 − 4 S cm − 1 ), mechanical strength (from 1.36 to 5.36 GPa) and air stability (anti-Li 2 CO 3) of the electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) results reveal that the formation of Li 3 BO 3 contributes to the improvement of the interfacial lithiophilicity, and the interface resistance is reduced from 1219 to 32 Ω cm−2. The critical current density (CCD) is enhanced from 0.1 to 0.7 mA cm−2, and the cells can be stably cycled for more than 1000 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm−2 with a low overpotential at room temperature. Vat photopolymerization 3D printing of Si 3 N 4 ceramics has attracted great attention recently. To overcome the low curing depth limitation caused by α-Si 3 N 4 , β-Si 3 N 4 with low absorbance and large particle size was selected in this paper. After printing, the effects of pressureless sintering temperatures on mechanical and dielectric properties were systematically investigated. At 1800 °C, the real permittivity of Si 3 N 4 ceramics was 7.37, and the maximum bending strength was 367 ± 75 MPa. Considering the application of Si 3 N 4 ceramics in radomes/windows, the dielectric constant of Si 3 N 4 ceramics should be further reduced. Therefore, the octet-truss lattice structure was introduced to optimize the porosity of ceramics. As the porosity increased from 25% to 36%, the real permittivity decreased from 5.56 to 4.42, and the bending strength ranged from 98 ± 7–62 ± 13 MPa. MgAl 2 O 4 -SiC composites were prepared under flowing nitrogen at 1500 °C by using MgAl 2 O 4 powder, SiC powder, Al powder and Si powder as raw materials. Through microstructural observation and analysis, the effects of in situ Mg-Sialon and β-Sialon with different amounts of Si powder addition were investigated in this paper. The results show that the samples without Si addition main contained MgAl 2 O 4 , SiC and well development plate structure Mg-Sialon phase. After addition of Si powder, not only the above three phases appeared, but also β-Sialon phase appeared. Meanwhile, with increasing Si contents, the content of β-Sialon phase increased and samples were more dense, limiting the development of the plate structure Mg-Sialon phase. With increasing Si content from 0 wt% to 20 wt%, the apparent porosity shows decreased trend, while the bulk density and cold module of rupture show increased. The samples with 20 wt% Si addition can get the minimum apparent porosity (33.5 %), maximum bulk density (2.13 g•cm−3) and cold module of rupture (87.0 MPa). Ceramic cutting tool materials possess specific advantages, including high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and high chemical stability, making them unparalleled in the machining of difficult-to-process materials compared to traditional cutting tools. The mechanical performance of these materials is primarily determined by their microstructure. Therefore, it is necessary to simulate and optimize the microstructure of ceramic cutting tool materials to provide theoretical guidance for further enhancing their fracture toughness. In this paper, a simulation model based on sintering densification theory was proposed, coupling crystal plasticity with a three-dimensional cellular automaton, to investigate the impact of nanoparticle content, sintering temperature, sintering pressure, and holding time on grain growth in composite ceramic materials using spark plasma sintering (SPS). Furthermore, an evolution model for grain growth of TiB 2 -TiC-SiC nanocomposite ceramic materials in cutting tools is established, and the optimal sintering process parameters are obtained. Finally, SPS experiments were conducted. Under the conditions of a sintering temperature of 1600 °C, holding time of 7 min, and sintering pressure of 40 MPa, optimal mechanical performance composite ceramic cutting tool materials were prepared. The experimental results, including a hardness of 25.6 GPa, fracture toughness of 7.1 MPa·m1/2, and flexural strength of 628.2 MPa, were consistent with the simulation outcomes. Luneburg lenses prepared by alumina stereolithography, have the advantages of low dielectric loss, corrosion resistance, and flexible structure. However, the supporting structure limits the degree of geometric design freedom. This paper analyzes the effects of modifiers and dispersants on paste properties from the molecular structure, which is different from the traditional process that doesn't analyze the influence of similar mechanisms and binding site competition while ignoring the correlation. Based on the dispersant's better flexibility bringing more obvious change in viscosity, we first determine the amount of dispersant and then adapt the amount of modifier to obtain self-supporting pastes of 82 wt % and 24.9 Pa.swithout gradation. The gain and beam deflection angle of Luneburg lenses with high geometric complexity and working bandwidth of 38° formed by stereolithography self-supporting process is matched to the simulation results without manufacturing defects, which provides a theoretical basis for more flexible design and manufacture of Luneburg lenses. Microwave ceramics with low relative dielectric permittivities (ε r), high-quality factors (Q×f values), and near-zero temperature coefficients of resonant frequency (τ f) are strongly required for the 5 G and forthcoming 6 G wireless communication system. Effects of the TiO 2 addition and atmosphere control on the microstructures and microwave dielectric properties of 0.05AlPO 4 -0.05BPO 4 -0.90SiO 2 (5A5B90S) and 0.45AlPO 4 -0.45BPO 4 -0.10SiO 2 (45A45B10S) ternaries were investigated in this paper to achieve the above objective. Adding TiO 2 produced the TiP 2 O 7 and/or (TiO) 2 P 2 O 7 secondary phases in the 5A5B90S, and TiP 2 O 7 in the 45A45B10S sintered bodies, respectively, which improved their sinterabilities. Near zero- τ f value (τ f ∼ −2.0(8) ppm/°C) whilst retaining low ε r (∼4.97(7)) and high Q×f value (54,000 ± 1619 GHz) could be attained for the 5A5B90S with the addition of 15 wt% TiO 2. In contrast, both the Q×f and τ f values deteriorated with the addition of TiO 2 for the 45A45B10S. Sintering in the B 2 O 3 protection atmosphere helps suppress the formation of TiP 2 O 7 and/or (TiO) 2 P 2 O 7 secondary phases for both samples, specifically in the surface layer of the sample, which increased the tunability of τ f to be near zero. Combined good microwave dielectric properties with ε r ∼ 4.47(6)， Q×f ∼ 48000 ± 950 GHz， τ f ∼ − 2.1(8) ppm/°C; ε r ∼ 5.05(8)， Q×f ∼ 45,326 ± 900 GHz， τ f ∼ − 7.6 ± 1.2 ppm/°C could be attained for the 5A5B90S + 10 wt% TiO 2 and 45A45B10S + 15 wt% TiO 2 ceramics, respectively by sintering in B 2 O 3 protection atmosphere. Low hardness and high abradability are often required for abradable seal coating (ASC) to protect the blade tip of gas turbines and aeroengines. However, the low bonding strength often lead to spallation failure. In this paper, a novel abradable seal coating with thin-wall porous spheres was designed and prepared. Results show that this coating has both a low hardness of 48.6 HR15Y and a high bonding strength of 25.4 MPa. The abradability and erosion resistance of this coating are 4 times and 63 times higher than reported metal-based coatings. In addition, no surface densification occurs after incursion due to the novel abradable mechanism of crushing of thin-wall sphere. This demonstrates the coating can retain excellent abradability during service and have a long lifetime. The combination of durable excellent abradability and adhesive strength contribute to a long lifetime required by next-generation gas turbines and aeroengines towards higher efficiency and reliability. Domain switching not only exhibits a great effect on piezoelectric performance, but also serves as foundation of some ferroelectric applications, such as ferroelectric nonvolatile memories and nonlinear optical devices. Therefore, a thorough understanding in the process and mechanism of domain switching is of vital significance. In this paper, we observed the process of domain switching under electric field by controlling poling conditions. The domain structures, polarization orientation, and piezoelectric performance of K 0.52 Na 0.48 NbO 3 single crystals poled at different temperatures and electric fields were investigated. We found that the polarization-rotation in poling process of the crystals occurs in steps and along a specific conversion path: [ 1 ¯ 01] - [011] - [ 1 ¯ 10]. Furthermore, poling under specific conditions can construct specific domains, which can be used in optical-function devices and may significantly promote the design of new generation ferroelectric memory devices.
