Fast and effective cleanup of oil spills remains a global challenge. A modified commercial sponge with superhydrophobicity, strong absorption capacity, outstanding magnetic response, and fire resistance were fabricated by a facile and inexpensive route of dip-coated melamine sponge carbonization. The low-cost petroleum asphaltene and kaolin nanoparticles were used as the dip-coating reagent. High absorption capacity of the fabricated sponges allowed rapid and continuous removal of oil contaminants. Taking advantage of the good refractory property, the sponges can be used in burning conditions and directly reused after burning out of the absorbed oil. Reusability tests showed that the modified sponges still maintained high absorption capacity (>85%) after six regeneration and reuse cycles. These characteristics make the fabricated sponge a promising aid to promote effective in situ burning cleanup of oil spills, contributing as a magnetic oil collector and a fire-resistant flexible boom. This article presents a thermal-switchable metamaterial absorber (TSMA) based on the phase-change material of vanadium dioxide (VO2). VO2 thin film was deposited on sapphire substrate by magnetron sputtering followed by vacuum annealing treatment. Then, the prepared VO2 film was sliced into tiny chips for thermal-switchable elements. The surface structure of TSMA was realized by loading four VO2 chips into a square metallic loop. The absorption frequency of TSMA was located at 7.3 GHz at room temperature and switched to 6.8 GHz when the temperature was heated above the critical phase transition temperature of VO2. A VO2-based TSMA prototype was fabricated and measured to verify this design. The design is expected to be used in metasurface antennas, sensors, detectors, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To improve the heat dissipation efficiency of batteries, the eutectic mass ratios of each component in the ternary low-melting phase change material (PCM), consisting of stearic acid (SA), palmitic acid (PA), and lauric acid (LA), was explored in this study. Subsequently, based on the principle of high thermal conductivity and low leakage, SA–PA–LA/expanded graphite (EG)/carbon fiber (CF) composite phase change material (CPCM) was prepared. A novel double-layer CPCM, with different melting points, was designed for the battery-temperature control test. Lastly, the thermal management performance of non-CPCM, single-layer CPCM, and double-layer CPCM was compared via multi-condition charge and discharge experiments. When the mass ratio of SA to PA is close to 8:2, better eutectic state is achieved, whereas the eutectic mass ratio of the components of SA–PA–LA in ternary PCM is 29.6:7.4:63. SA–PA–LA/EG/CF CPCM formed by physical adsorption has better mechanical properties, thermal stability, and faster heat storage and heat release rate than PCM. When the CF content in SA–PA–LA/EG/CF CPCM is 5%, and the mass ratio of SA–PA–LA to EG is 91:9, the resulting SA–PA–LA/EG/CF CPCM has lower leakage rate and better thermal conductivity. The temperature control effect of single-layer paraffin wax (PW)/EG/CF CPCM is evident when compared to the no-CPCM condition. However, the double-layer CPCM (PW/EG/CF and SA–PA–LA/EG/CF CPCM) can further reduce the temperature rise of the battery, effectively control the temperature and temperature difference, and primarily maintain the battery in a lower temperature range during usage. After adding an aluminum honeycomb to the double-layer CPCM, the double-layer CPCM exhibited better thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. Moreover, the structure showed better battery temperature control performance, while meeting the temperature control requirements during the charging and discharging cycles of the battery. Exploiting effective therapies to fight tumor growth is an important part of modern cancer research. The anti-cancer activities of many plant-derived substances are well known, in part because the substances are often extensively distributed. Chicoric acid, a phenolic compound widely distributed in many plants, has drawn widespread attention in recent years because of its extraordinary anti-cancer activities. However, traditional methods for quantifying chicoric acid are inefficient and time-consuming. In this study, an ultrasensitive non-enzymatic sensor for the determination of chicoric acid was developed based on the use of an Au@Pt-polyetherimide-reduced graphene oxide (PEI-RGO) nanohybrid-modified glassy carbon electrode. Owing to the considerable conductivity of PEI-functionalized RGO and the efficient electrocatalytic activity of Au@Pt nanoalloys, the designed sensor exhibited a high capacity for chicoric acid measurement, with a low detection limit of 4.8 nM (signal-to-noise ratio of 3) and a broad linear range of four orders of magnitude. With the advantages provided by the synergistic effects of Au@Pt nanocomposites and PEI-RGO, the developed sensor also revealed exceptional electrochemical characteristics, including superior sensitivity, fast response, acceptable long-term stability, and favorable selectivity. This work provides a powerful new platform for the highly accurate measurement of chicoric acid quantities, facilitating further research into its potential as a cancer treatment.
