You can't say Cole Porter wasn't a genius. Some 60 years ago, he was handed a little backstage story about the cast of a Shakespearean musical playing in Baltimore: a ladies' man, his diva ex-wife, a bimbo who can't act and a young gambler who can never pay his taxi fare. Porter whipped up some music and some catchy lyrics, and the result was ''Kiss Me, Kate.'' The Paper Mill Playhouse's first-rate new production makes clear just why ''Kiss Me, Kate,'' which pays tribute to ''The Taming of the Shrew,'' won the first Tony Award, in 1949, for best musical.
