Nikon just released the specifications on eight new cameras, many with upgrades from existing models, but two with notable advances. The Coolpix P300 is a new Nikon point-and-shoot that is particularly good for low light. In addition to inventing many new modes of artistic expression, they headed out into the countryside, recording the pristine beauty as European cities were rapidly industrializing. In part, they sought to capture and preserve remnants of a vanishing world. Not too much later in America, artists pursued a similar ambition on the North Fork and South Fork of Long Island, where with oil paints, easels and brushes hauled from city studios, they painted the sea, marshes and dunes. MAYBE Maxwell Tielman cannot abide a white wall because the house he grew up in, in Buffalo, had a rose-colored living room. Or maybe it has to do with the fact that red, a notoriously passionate choice, is his favorite color. Whatever the reason, when the 20-year-old freshman at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology moved into a white-walled railroad flat in Brooklyn, he painted the walls in the living room a rich rose.
