Bats are a highly diversified order of mammals found all over the world; however, their population size and distribution are decreasing rapidly in Europe nowadays. The study of ancient bat populations by means of their fossil record is a valuable source of contextual information for modern bat conservation studies. This paper is a comprehensive review of published bat records in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands through Quaternary times, representing the first attempt to update and standardize the knowledge of chiropters in southwestern Europe during this time period. The main goal is to identify changes in bat assemblages that might be correlatable to palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironmental changes. Our data show that the Quaternary record of bats in the area is fragmentary and strongly dependent on the presence of karstic cavities. Thus, a strong preservation bias towards colonial cave-dwelling bats exists, and species with alternative ecological requirements are under-represented. Nevertheless, this work reveals that most of the bats inhabiting the area today were already present in the region from at least the Middle Pleistocene. Interestingly, we observe a frequent association between certain cave-dwelling bats (i.e., Rhinolophus ferrumequinum , Miniopterus schreibersii , Myotis myotis and M. blythii) that is still observed in many caves today; this reflects a stable ecology that has remained undisturbed despite past climatic changes. Within the well-documented periods at the end of the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene, a reduction in some common components of Quaternary assemblages (Rhinolophus species and M. schreibersii) is observed, coinciding with the Late Glacial Maximum and the Northgrippian Neoglacial (a cooling event in the Holocene). Finally, the Balearic record shows interesting palaeobiogeographical characteristics, including some eastern taxa absent in the Iberian Peninsula (Rhinolophus variabilis and R. cf. blasii) as well as an unusual abundance of Rhinolophus hipposideros. • Most extant bats in the Iberian Peninsula were already present there ca. 600 ka. • A strong bias towards colonial, cave bats counting exists within the fossil record. • Three Mediterranean cave bats associate stably despite Quaternary climate shifts. • The Last Glacial Maximum and the Northgrippian Neoglacial events left a mark. • Two oriental taxa and higher reports on Rhinolophus for the Balearic fossil bats. The Holocene Temperature Conundrum refers to the mismatch between proxy-based temperature records and those based on climate model simulations. A possible reason for this mismatch is a putative proxy-based bias in reconstructed summer temperatures, and therefore, regional reconstructions of seasonal temperature are crucial for resolving the conundrum. In this paper, we reconstruct vegetation and climate changes over the last ∼10,000 years BP based on a high-resolution pollen record from Gushantun peatland, Changbai Mountains, Northeast China. Multiple quantitative reconstruction approaches were used and weighted averaging partial least squares regression (WAPLS) was found to be the most appropriate method for reconstructing Holocene temperature and precipitation. The reconstructed climate record shows that the Holocene Climate Optimum occurred between 8 ka and 6 ka and exhibited a cold month mean temperature that was 3 °C warmer than modern temperatures. Climate gradually cooled during late Holocene with a minimum cold month temperature of −19.6 °C. Four prominent cold events occurred around 8.7 ka BP, 7.8 ka BP, 5.7 ka BP, and 2.5 ka BP with an amplitude variation up to 3 °C. The synthesized seasonal temperature time series and a comparison with other proxies show that the decreasing trend in mean annual temperature is not a seasonal bias caused by summer temperature change. Discriminating the provenance of fine-grained sediments is crucial for reconstructing paleogeography, sedimentary processes, and paleoclimate. In this paper, we investigate the South Bohai Coast to better understand source-to-sink systems in East Asia. This region is influenced by both distant sources such as the large-scale Yellow River and small local river sources flowing from the Luzhong Mountain area. Two Holocene sedimentary cores, dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C chronology, were used to investigate the provenance of the fine-grained sediments over the last 7 kyrs. Clay mineralogy and relevant non-linear modeling were employed for provenance discrimination. The results show that the fine-grained sediments along the South Bohai Coast were mainly derived from the Yellow River during the periods of 7.0–5.4 ka and 4.5–2.6 ka, respectively, while the input from the Luzhong Mountain-derived rivers was greater during 5.4–4.5 ka and 2.6–0.2 ka, respectively. Fluvial activities and marine-terrestrial interaction driven by climate factors such as East Asian winter monsoon, temperature, and precipitation in river basins, dominantly influenced the provenance of fine-grained sediments from 7.0 to 2.6 ka. Anthropogenic impact on provenance increased after 2.6 ka. The chronology of the two cores showed extremely rapid sedimentation rate transitions at 5.2 ka and 1.5 ka, respectively, very likely attributed to anthropogenic-induced rapid progradation. In this paper, we investigate Holocene precipitation changes in northern China to improve the understanding of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and provide an environmental context for the development of Chinese civilisation. Our study is based on an analysis of 260 pollen samples from Holocene lacustrine sediments at Ningjinpo in northern China, and employs the biomisation method to reconstruct regional vegetation types and vegetation changes, and to decipher their driving factors, by incorporating regional climatic data and information on human activities. Results indicate that, in the early Holocene (10,000–8100 cal yr B.P.), regional climate was dry, with annual precipitation of 470 mm. In the middle Holocene (8100–3000 cal yr B.P.), a rapid increase was observed in precipitation, reaching 580 mm. During the late Holocene (2600–600 cal yr B.P.), climate became drier again, with annual precipitation decreasing to 480 mm. Between 10,000–600 cal yr B.P., vegetation exhibited distinct successional patterns dominantly influenced by climate, transitioning from meadow-steppe to forest, and then back to meadow-steppe. After 600 cal yr B.P., vegetation succession decoupled from climate change, with human activities emerging as the primary driving force, as indicated by the substantial increase in anthropogenic pollen and charcoal concentrations. The Salawusu River Valley cuts through the Mu Us Desert in north central China, and lies at the interface of the East Asian Summer and Winter Monsoonal regions. Exposed at numerous locations in the valley side are extensive late Quaternary deposits, consisting of interbedded aeolian sands, fluvio-lacustrine units and palaeosols. Due to the importance of the location in potentially elucidating both summer and winter monsoonal regimes, and the quality of the sedimentary record, the region has a rich history of study, and yet even within the Holocene sequence, many conflicting interpretations have arisen based on studies on different sections. This paper aims to synthesize and explore these differences by exploring the lateral continuity of the Holocene sequences along a ~ 45 km reach of the valley, and presenting new, detailed physical and geochemical analyses of three sections, focusing on the lacustrine Holocene Dagouwan Formation. The absence of the lacustrine unit at several locations confirms that rather than representing a single lake, the Dagouwan Formation instead represents a series of palaeolakes, probably at least partially hydrologically isolated from each other by aeolian sands. All begin with sand-dominated deposits during the early−/mid-Holocene, which is interpreted as the result of abundant sand-supply to the north and west, under the influence of an enhanced East Asian Winter Monsoon, and all switch to silt-dominated, more carbonate-rich deposits during the mid−/late-Holocene, which is attributed to an enhanced East Asian Summer Monsoon bringing loessic silts from the Chinese Loess Plateau to the east and south. The timing of this change, perhaps as late as 5.5 ka, supports the idea of a relatively enhancement late mid-Holocene of the summer monsoonal circulation in the region. However, despite the proximity of the sections and consistent analytical approaches, marked differences between the sections occur in all proxies studied. The timing and rate of the switch from sand- to silt-dominated lacustrine deposition varies between the sites by as much as 2000 years within just a few kilometres of each other, and at some sites the switch was gradual, whereas at others it was very rapid. Similar dramatic variations are also seen with organic carbon content, carbonate content, C:N ratio, and especially the δ13C isotopic ratio. Ecosystems in arid regions with sandy substrates are vulnerable to various environmental challenges. Understanding the vegetation evolution of such regions over a long timescale and the possible drivers of change is important for optimizing ecological restoration. In this paper, we present multi-proxy data to understand Holocene vegetation dynamics and their drivers in the Horqin Sandy Land in northern China. Phytoliths are used to reconstruct vegetation; grain size and magnetic susceptibility are used to reconstruct the climate; and sedimentary charcoal contents and the numbers of regional archaeological sites are used to reconstruct the fire activity and human activity intensity, respectively. Results indicate that the Horqin Sandy Land was covered mainly by grassland vegetation during the Holocene, and that the trajectory of vegetation evolution was as follows: sparse and species-poor Leymus chinensis grassland from 9300 to 6150 cal yr BP, relatively sparse and species-rich mesophytic herb grassland from 6150 to 2300 cal yr BP, and dense and species-rich L. chinensis grassland from 2300 to 250 cal yr BP. Climate change was the main driver of vegetation evolution, but fire and human activities also influenced the vegetation to varying degrees. Fire made the greatest contribution to the vegetation change during the 6150–2300 cal yr BP interval, and human activities contributed throughout the 8200–2300 cal yr BP interval. Martínez and Rojas (2013) published a paper about the relative sea level during the Holocene in Uruguay. The paper of Martínez and Rojas could be handled as an attempt to construct a sea-level curve from data collected from different sources: open-ocean coast, the Río de la Plata coastline and the outlet of Uruguay River. In this sense, several processes were involved: storm effects at open-ocean beaches, the Holocene enclosing of coastal lagoons, storms within the funnel-shaped estuary and the floods of the Uruguay River. However, they included a series of omissions, inaccuracies, errors and critics to our work, that need to be amended, rectified and argued. In response we present a historical background about the research on this issue in Uruguay. We refute the comments about the empirical framework used to construct the first sea-level curve for Uruguay (Bracco et al., 2008, 2011b). We point out that the assumptions on which the curve proposed by Martínez and Rojas (2013) is based are mistaken. In addition, there are limitations of the performed statistical techniques, and errors — mainly systematic — within their formulation. We present evidence that the decrease in sea level from middle Holocene would not have been constant. Instead, a rapid sea level decrease would have taken place by 4300yrBP. Finally, we not only compare our sea level curve with that proposed by Martínez and Rojas, but also we corrected the altimetry errors incurred in their formulation. In this paper, we examine the Early to Middle Holocene evolution of a prominent group of ground-water fed lakes in the southeastern hinterland of the Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) of northwest China. Specifically, we describe a sediment profile record from the Taoerlegetu (TR) palaeolake basin using multiple proxies of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N ratio, δ13C org , grain size and mineral composition based on a well-dated trench profile. As C/N values suggest that sedimentary organic matter mainly originated from aquatic plants, δ13Corg values can be used as a qualitative proxy for water level because aquatic plants in different biotopes (water depth) have different δ13C values. Our results show that from 10.9 to 9.1 cal kyr B.P., water level rose slowly, and aquatic macrophytes occupied the lake basin. From 9.1 to 5.5 cal kyr B.P., water level reached an even higher level and phytoplankton replaced macrophytes as the major contributor to organic matter. The humid episode of the lakes in the hinterland of the BJD in the early Holocene might be related to the increased groundwater supply from the northeast region of the Tibet Plateau. These findings are consistent with earlier studies of lacustrine and peat sediments found in periphery of the modern lake group, which indicate that their geographic extent may have been larger in the past. A relative drought period recorded in the studied succession from 8.5 to 8.0 cal kyr B.P. marks an interval of reduced ground-water transport from the Tibet Plateau. Millennial-scale variations in the Asian monsoon vapor transport are always associated with long-term changes in monsoon rainfall according to the conventional understanding. However, recent advances in monsoon studies suggested that regional monsoon rainfall has different responses to monsoon vapor transport. This paper presents a comparison between monsoonal vapor and precipitation records along the path of the Asian summer monsoon vapor transport. Pedogenic carbonate δ 18 O values in both surface sediment and Holocene eolian and lacustrine sediments from the Shiyang River drainage basin were used to investigate the variations of the Asian monsoon vapor transport. Meanwhile, Holocene lake-level changes of the terminal lake were reconstructed to reflect the monsoon precipitation variability. The results show that millennial-scale monsoon vapor transport is in accordance with low-latitude summer insolation, while the increasing summer monsoon rainfall during the early Holocene lags the monsoon water vapor transport. In addition, the relatively cold oceans left over from glacial periods and slow melting of ice sheets may temper the onset of the rainfall. We present and appraise a large compilation of peatland palaeoecological research in Great Britain, and discuss the value of these data for secondary analysis. We identify 475 radiocarbon-dated palaeoecological records from British peatlands published since 1970. Peatland palaeoecological research has been widespread but with some clear spatial biases reflecting factors such as accessibility and the location and interests of active researchers. We show that basic details such as stratigraphic descriptions, site coordinates and full details of radiocarbon dates are omitted from publications with surprising frequency and note the large quantity of data that only ever appears in PhD theses. To allow papers to remain concise while presenting essential background information we propose a system of standardised meta-data in online supplementary material. The extensive body of palaeoecological data for British peatlands has been relatively unexploited. The compilation we present will be a valuable aid in making better use of this data resource. Reconstruction of past vegetation change is critical for better understanding the potential impact of future global change on the fragile alpine ecosystems of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). In this paper, pollen assemblages comprising 58 records from the QTP, spanning the past 15 kyrs, were collected to reconstruct biome compositions using a standard approach. Six forest biomes were identified mainly on the southeastern plateau, exhibiting a pattern of gradual expansion along the eastern margin during early to mid-Holocene times. The alpine meadow biome was separately identified based on an updated scheme, and showed notable westward expansions towards lower latitudes and higher altitudes during early Holocene times. Consistent patterns of migration could also be identified for the alpine steppe biome, which moved eastward during the late Holocene after 4 ka. As the dominant biome type, temperate steppe was distributed widely over the QTP with minor migration patterns, except for a progressive expansion to lower altitudes in the late Holocene times. The desert biome was inferred mainly as covering the northwestern plateau and the Qaidam Basin, in relatively restricted areas. The spatial distribution of the reconstructed biomes represent the large-scale vegetation gradient on the QTP. Monsoonal precipitation expressed predominant controls on the development of alpine ecosystems, while the variations in desert vegetation responded to regional moisture brought by the mid-latitude Westerlies. Temperature changes played relatively minor roles in the variations of alpine vegetation, but exerted more significant impacts on the forest biomes. • Fossil pollen based biome reconstruction on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau since 15 ka. • Spatial/temporal patterns of biome changes on the QTP were illustrated and examined. • Forest and alpine meadow biomes experienced migrations during the mid-Holocene. • Vegetation changes responded closely to moisture changes with spatial divergence. The Holocene vegetation in the Yangtze Delta is sensitive to global/regional climate change, sea-level oscillations, and human impacts, and it represents a valuable archive for deciphering environmental change. In this paper, the vegetation history of the northern Yangtze deltaic coast, and its response to climate/sea-level changes over the past 10.3 ka, have been investigated based on palynological assemblages from a well-dated sediment core (YZ07) in the northern Yangtze delta. Comparison of vegetation successions with regional climatic proxies, relative sea level change, and depositional environments suggests that this region was dominated by mixed subtropical and temperate forests in a warm /wet climate regime during the early Holocene (~10.3–8.7 ka), when it was characterized by tidally-influenced fluvial environments. From ~8.7 ka to 7.5 ka, subtropical and warm temperate pollen taxa decreased significantly while cool-tolerant conifers and grasses became more dominant, indicating a cooler and drier climate. During the mid-Holocene thermal optimum (~7.5–4.3 ka), mixed subtropical and temperate forests expanded markedly in coastal regions, caused by a return to a warm/wet climate during an episode of rising sea-level. At the start of late Holocene (~4.3 to 3.4 ka), subtropical and temperate trees were widely replaced by grasses around coastal environments, indicating a cooling climate. From ~3.4–1.7 ka, mixed subtropical and temperate forests flourished in the delta region, suggesting that climate returned to warm and wet conditions again. From ~1.7–1.3 ka, in delta environments, subtropical and temperate forests contracted under cool/dry climatic conditions. Since ~1.3 ka, subtropical and temperate pollen taxa increased around the marsh to intertidal flat environments, suggesting a warm/wet climate resurgence. The generally warm/wet Holoence climate of the Yangtze Delta region was interrupted by a series of short-term cold events at 8.2 ka, 7.3 ka, 4.2 ka, 3.5 ka and 1.4 ka. These fluctuations are broadly synchronous with regional climate variability and global sea-level oscillations. This paper reports centennial-scale variations in the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) that induced stratification and resultant productivity changes in the southern Andaman Sea. The study is based on foraminifera assemblages and sediment geochemistry, along with statistical, spectral and wavelet analyses of faunal data of a well-dated sediment core. The Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) 14C dated record spans the past 30 kyr with an average temporal resolution varying between 38 and 150 years. The spectral and wavelet analyses of planktonic foraminiferal record reveal significant periodicities during the past 30 kyr suggesting varied forcing mechanisms on the ISM. The characteristic suborbital periodicities correspond mainly to solar irradiance variability. The varying productivity in the southern Andaman Sea over the northern region suggests control of surface salinity, which modulated stratification in the upper water column. The large north to south gradient in productivity during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 23–19 ka) to Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1; 16–15 ka) indicates the prevalence of strong winter monsoon and well-mixed upper water column in the south. A distinctive high productivity period was identified from the southern Andaman Sea during 16.0–11.2 ka with a peak during the Bølling/Allerød (B/A; 14.5–12.6 ka). On the other hand, a gradual decrease in productivity from the early Holocene to mid-Holocene reflects a response to strong stratification induced by intensified ISM. This enhanced ISM during the early to mid-Holocene resulted in low productivity in the entire basin, albeit with much reduced productivity in the northern part. However, during the marine isotope stage (MIS) 2, the southern Andaman Sea was relatively more productive than the northern Andaman Sea. We recognise three distinctive spatial and temporal changes in salinity structure in the Andaman Sea: 1) 'normal' salinity pattern (weak ISM) in which relatively less saline water in the northern part of the basin existed during the late Holocene; 2) 'strong' salinity pattern (strong ISM) with extensive freshwater tongue in the northern part existed during early to mid- Holocene; 3) 'reverse' salinity pattern with decreased north to south salinity gradient during LGM to early deglacial (19–15 ka), probably driven by the increased isolation of the Andaman basin during the sea-level lowstand, which would have restricted the mixing of northern surface waters with the more saline southern Bay of Bengal (BoB). • 30 kyr high-resolution ISM record from the southern Andaman Sea. • Stratification driven by ISM controls productivity in the Andaman Sea. • ISM was strong during D/O events, early and mid-Holocene in the Andaman Sea. • ISM strengthening started at 11.4 ka with a stepwise increase at 10.6, 9.3 & 8.0 ka. • Deglacial productivity in the Andaman Sea is greatly influenced by winter monsoon. In this paper, we conduct a palynological analysis of a high-resolution Holocene record from Cartagena Bay, southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, to establish paleoenvironmental variability of coastal areas in the western Mediterranean region at a centennial-scale over the last 7300 years. Statistical analysis of four palynozones allows reconstruction of paleotemperature and paleohumidity conditions. Pinus , steppic, xerophilous, and Mediterranean taxa persisted continuously through the record, and only during periods of increased humidity did deciduous and Mediterranean taxa expand (Zones II, subzone IIIb). Cooler and dry conditions favored the development of Cupressaceae and scrubs between 7300 and 7000 yr cal BP. The mid-Holocene (Northgrippian) mesophytic optimum took place between 6800 and 4000 yr cal BP during which time a Mediterranean climate was present and open forest developed, predominantly consisting of Mediterranean taxa and deciduous trees. The gradual rise in aridity in the Meghalayan (4000–1700 yr cal BP) led to Mediterranean forest being replaced by steppic and xerophilous vegetation, a change related mostly to a decrease in summer insolation, with superimposed centennial-scale variability in humidity. In parallel with forest degradation caused by increasing aridity, the record shows marked evidence of human influence since 4000 yr cal BP, which accelerated the progression of open landscapes from the Chalcolithic onwards, this change being especially marked during the Roman period. Significant denudation of the landscape can be attributed to the use of fire, as well as due to agriculture and grazing, with a major contributor being intense metallurgical and mining activity in the area. The Cartagena Bay record reported herein shows centennial-scale oscillations in humidity and temperature that correlate with well-known climatic events during the late Holocene in the western Mediterranean region, synchronous with variability in solar and atmospheric dynamics. Lacustrine-peat sediments from the Oskino-09 borehole in Western Siberia, which span the last 7.5 cal ka BP, were sampled for pollen and plant macro-remains to better understand regional climatic changes and the position of the forest-steppe border. Analysis of palynological assemblages indicate that meadow-steppe landscapes occupied the largest area in the middle of the Holocene (7.5–4.7 cal ka BP) due to reduced effective moisture during a warm climate interval. A subsequent gradual decrease in temperatures and evaporation led to an increase in effective moisture and emergence of birch groves during 4.7–2.0 cal ka BP, with short interruptions at ca. 3.3 and 2.5 cal ka BP. The expansion of pine forests and the advance of taiga to the south were recorded at ca. 2.0 cal ka BP. There is little evidence for significant human impact on forest-steppe belt evolution, and specifically evidence for anthropogenic deforestation on the southern border of the taiga is lacking. Human activities did not start to impact forests until the emergence of semi-nomadic cattle breeding in the Iron Age. The 4.2 ka Event has generally been regarded as a period of decades to at most a few centuries in which comparatively dry conditions existed in the Middle East and more broadly across the mid-latitude Northern Hemisphere. This paper presents new stable-isotopic and petrographic observations from two previously-unreported U-Th-dated stalagmites from Dante Cave in northeastern Namibia. The results are most compatible with wetter conditions during the 4.2 ka Event, and wetness during the 4.2 ka Event is the only inference supported by evidence. These new results add to observations previously reported from a third Dante Cave stalagmite suggesting a comparatively wet 4.2 ka Event in which Africa's Tropical Rain Belt migrated southward and rainfall increased along the Congo Air Boundary and/or Kalahari Discontinuity. The new results support findings from three other locations in Namibia and Botswana, from at least seven other locations in the Southern Hemisphere, and at least one in southern China, that suggest a wetter rather than drier 4.2 ka Event in those regions. The pattern emerging from these sites generally agrees with recent modeling results indicating increased moisture over broad areas (but not all) of the Southern Hemisphere. This in turn suggests a 4.2 ka Event that was not a global drought but was instead a set of latitudinally-dependent responses to global-scale southward migration of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and thus Africa's loosely linked Tropical Rain Belt, as a result of cooling of the Northern Hemisphere, which brought drier conditions to some areas and wetter conditions to others. • Like one before, two new stalagmites indicate wet 4.2 ka Event in northeast Namibia. • Layer-bounding surfaces and stable isotope data document the wet 4.2 ka Event. • Growing body of proxy evidence from Southern Hemisphere indicates a wet 4.2 ka Event. • Independent modeling supports proxy evidence of wet Southern Hemisphere 4.2 ka Event. • Tropical Rain Belt and ITCZ migrated southward with Northern-Hemisphere cooling. Abstract: In the regions surrounding the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, changes in erosion rates have been linked to the tectonics, climate and topography over different time scales. To understand the mechanisms governing the changes of erosion rates, it is important to study erosion rates by different methods and for different time scales. In inland drainage basins, deposition rates of terminal lake sediments can indicate basin-wide erosion rates at the millennial-scale. This paper presents three lake records of the Last Deglaciation and Holocene (Huahai Lake, Zhuye Lake and Yanchi Lake) from the Hexi Corridor, north of the Qilian Mountains, in arid China. Organic matter, terrestrial pollen concentrates, seeds, grasses and plant debris are used for conventional and AMS 14C dating. On the basis of 66 radiocarbon dates, lithology and grain-size, we infer relatively high basin-wide erosion rates during the Last Deglaciation and early Holocene in the three drainage basins, when the three lake sediments were seriously affected by reworking. The deposition rates were an order of magnitude or greater in these lakes during the Last Deglaciation and early Holocene than during the mid-to-late Holocene. During the transition period of the last glacial–interglacial cycle, significant climatic changes occurred in East and Central Asia, corresponding to the strengthening of the Asian summer monsoon and to increasing effective moisture in arid Central Asia, which can have strong impacts on basin-wide erosion rates north of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. Moreover, melting glaciers in the Qilian Mountains probably also contributed to the high basin-wide erosion rates. At the same time, tectonic activity was not recognizable in the study area during that period. In the arid and semiarid regions surrounding the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, dramatic changes in erosion rates appear during the transition periods of the glacial–interglacial cycles, which illustrate the climatic controls on erosion rates at this time scale. Abstract: The paper presents the first paleontological data (pollen, plant macrofossil, diatom and ostracod) on the sediments of Lake Beloye, which is situated in the forest-steppe zone of Western Siberia. Our study contributes to better understanding of the Middle–Late Holocene regional to local environmental changes. Regionally, we recognized a cold stage of 3.4–2.3 calibrated ka BP and a dry stage of 2.8–1.7ka BP. The dry stage coincides with the climate-driven lowered level of the lake at 2.6–1.5ka BP. Later, the climate changed to warmer and wetter, which resulted in a highest stand of the lake at 1.3–0.2ka BP and was followed by the lowering of the lake. Forest-steppe persisted in this area during the whole period under consideration, but probably shifted southward. Such a shift is reflected in the environment around Lake Beloye similar to that of modern taiga, which existed at 3.2–1.3ka BP, however, compared to the colder and wetter climate of taiga, the conditions were colder and drier. The local plant associations and the lake ecosystem were affected by those events of climate and lake level changes. The initial eutrophic sedge-reed swamp evolved to the oligo-mesotrophic sphagnum bog, which existed around the lake at 3.2–1.3ka BP. Later, the bogging process was interrupted by the lake transgression, after which the dried bog around the lake was occupied by the birch forest. The lake ecosystem was strongly affected by the 3.4ka BP climate change: the low-alkaline eutrophic lake with abundant water higher plants and diatoms changed to the alkaline oligotrophic lake with calcium-fixing macrophytic algae and angiosperms. Abstract: In this paper, we make an inventory of geomorphic remnants of past glaciations, especially glacial stages that occurred just after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). More than 35 terrestrial cosmogenic radionuclide (TCR) ages were obtained, providing new chronological benchmarks for defining the transition between the LGM and the Holocene, thus answering some remaining questions in the southern French Alps (upper Durance catchment). TCR ages fit very well with the scenario defined in other parts of the European Alps: two main generations of post-LGM moraines were identified, highlighting a synchronicity of glacial responses during the Younger Dryas and the Preboreal. Indeed, the first generation we identified corresponds to the Younger Dryas period, while the second generation was shaped during the Preboreal period. They suggest that a relatively thick glacier tongue (300m thick) occupied the upper catchment until the end of the Lateglacial period. The glacier tongue disappeared at the very beginning of the Holocene, before a short glacial re-advance during the Preboreal period. This scenario is linked to a very low equilibrium line altitude (ELA) during the Younger Dryas and the Preboreal: located respectively 340 and 150m below the Little Ice Age (LIA) ELA. Collectively, the results highlight a significant west–east gradient in ELA, probably in relation to westerly and northwesterly winds. Finally, the deglaciation pattern in this area is similar to that of the western and northern Alps, and appears significantly different from the patterns found in the inner and eastern Alps (such as the Ubaye and Maritime Alps patterns). Abstract: Stratigraphic descriptions and radiocarbon data from eleven field locations are presented in this paper to establish a chronostratigraphic framework for offshore to nearshore deposits of Lake Bonneville. Based on key marker beds and geomorphic position, the deposits are interpreted to have accumulated during the period from the late transgressive phase, through the overflowing phase, into the regressive phase of the lake. Radiocarbon ages of sediments associated with the Provo shoreline indicate that Lake Bonneville dropped rapidly from the Provo shoreline at about 12,600 14C yr BP (15,000 cal yr B.P.). The presence of one or more sand beds in the upper part of the Provo-aged marl indicates rapid lowering of lake level or storm events at the end of the Provo episode. An accurate understanding of the timing and nature of Lake Bonneville''s climate-driven regression from the Provo shoreline is critical to correlations with records of regional and hemispheric climate change. The rapid descent of the lake from the Provo shoreline correlates with the decline of Lakes Lahontan and Estancia, and with the onset of the BØlling–AllerØd warming event. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper examines the interdependence among the different forcing factors in the evolution of the Traba coastal wetland (Galicia, NW Spain) based on lithofacies and diatom analyses of three cores reaching the basement. According to radiocarbon data, the wetland originated 5700 cal yr BP, a time when similar systems on the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula were formed. Diatom assemblage data allow the estimation of the sea level position at 5700 cal yr BP at least 7 m below present-day mean sea level. Attenuation of the sea-level rise at that time was a major driving mechanism that permitted the establishment of an incipient beach–dune complex, causing water-logging in the Traba basin. However, the location of this incipient wetland on a basement high, which prevented an open connection to the sea, made topographic inheritance the main forcing factor in the subsequent evolution of the wetland. Thus, Traba was never a coastal lagoon system, as it has sometimes been defined. The maximum permeability of the beach–dune complex enclosing the wetland was recorded after its origin until 2900 cal yr BP, when increased stormy conditions affected the Galician shelf waters. Since then, the evolution of the wetland has been mainly controlled by more local factors, especially the continental sediment supply. Changes in land use in the basin have accelerated the infilling of the water body since the 19th century. This rapid infilling makes the whole system more prone to total encroachment in the short term, rather than to sea drowning. Palaeoenvironmental analyses showing the main trends in the long-term evolution of coastal wetlands can be of key importance in any management decisions aimed at preserving these kinds of sensitive coastal environments. Abstract: Most palynological studies of mangroves have been carried out in the Indo-Pacific region, but few have investigated these ecosystems along the southern Atlantic coast. This paper provides information on the palynology of a mangrove at Itanhaém, state of São Paulo, on the southeastern Brazilian coast. This mangrove occurs on microtidal flats adjacent to a fluvial-tidal channel mouth (Itanhaém River), part of an estuarine lagoon system established in the mid-Holocene. Pollen samples were collected from the surface and from bromeliad water in order to define the composition of modern pollen rain in the study area. The results show a strong presence of rain forest taxa in the mangrove pollen spectra, which differ from those obtained from northern Brazilian mangroves, which are characterized by higher percentages of the mangrove taxa Rhizophora and Avicennia. Based on palynological and 14C chronological analysis of a shallow core measuring 135 cm in depth, the Itanhaém mangrove already existed by 1300 years BP and began expanding about 1000 years BP, reaching its present extent sometime after 300 years BP. Its evolution is related to the sedimentary filling of the estuarine–lagoonal depositional system. Two factors may have controlled the development of this mangrove: the relative increase of intertidal areas due to this sedimentary filling and the decrease in wave action and increase in pelitic deposition in the intertidal zone related to the partial closing of the estuarine–lagoonal inlets. These processes were favored by the advance of bayhead deltas and by the development of sand spits as a part of the regression of the Holocene strandplain. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper deals with Holocene coastal changes of the Astakos plain in Akarnania, NW Greece. Palaeoenvironmental scenarios are based on the analysis of the lateral and vertical distribution patterns of sedimentary facies. Sediments from vibracorings were studied using geomorphological, sedimentological, microfaunal, palaeobotanical and geochemical methods. A geochronostratigraphy was achieved by 14C-AMS-dating of organic matter. We present palaeogeographical maps for different points in time since the mid-Holocene. The evolution of the coastal area was generally controlled by the migration of a complex system of a shallow marine embayment, an adjacent lagoonal environment and an adjoining coastal lake forced by the interaction of sea level rise, tectonic movements, and sediment supply from the hinterland. The maximum transgression of the Ionian Sea took place at circa 5500cal BC reaching approx. 1.1km inland. The lagoon as well as the coastal lake had their largest dimensions around 4500cal BC indicating a more humid climatic period. In the course of a long-lasting regression, an asymmetric sedimentation pattern developed. Around 2500cal BC it was characterized by strong fluvial deposition of the Xeropotamos in the western plain and a small and narrow marine embayment with associated lagoonal to limnic coastal water bodies in the eastern plain. The latter were related to karstic springs draining the adjacent Rigani ridge. Around 500cal BC the coastline lay about 200m landward of its present position. Possible harbour sites for the ancient polis of Astakos are (a) the area of modern Astakos where a mole in a position seawards of the present coast would have guaranteed deep water conditions for anchoring, or (b) the southeastern fringe of the plain where deep water prevailed and the nearby freshwater outlet protected the site from rapid siltation. We found increased torrential activity (i) for the 6th–5th millennium BC, (ii) for the 2nd half of the 1st millennium BC until Roman times, and (iii) at the end of the 19th century AD. At least the two younger phases are mostly due to anthropogenic soil erosion. Between the 4th and the 2nd millennium BC a period of ecological stability existed. Relative changes in sea level for the Bay of Astakos were reconstructed for the first time. Since the mid-Holocene, the relative sea level has never reached a higher position than today. It rose from 12.50m b.s.l. at 6200cal BC via 2.20m b.s.l. at 500cal BC to its present level. Besides eustatic reasons, tectonic subsidence due to the half graben structure of the area is the main trigger of the relative rise in sea level. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A loess–paleosol sequence and a lake sediment record from the central Hexi Corridor in the drylands of NW China show patterns of persistent millennial- to centennial-scale climate variability during the Holocene epoch, which can be well correlated with abrupt climatic events reported from the North Atlantic and the Asian monsoon-dominated regimes. Our results show that the drylands in NW China might have been regulated both by the westerlies and by the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) in a roughly synchronous manner. It seems that cold–dry intervals in the central Hexi Corridor may generally correspond to cooling phases in high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, and that cold/warm–wet intervals largely correlate with relatively warm phases in northern high latitudes. A candidate mechanism involving NAO/AO and ENSO dynamics is tentatively proposed to account for this synchroneity. Climatic patterns may be spatially different in the NW China drylands in response to the changing predominant control of either the westerlies or the EASM, depending on the contrast of their relative strengths. Glacier meltwater discharges associated with alpine warming may be partly responsible, at least for the two records discussed in this paper, for such spatial heterogeneity of climatic changes during the Holocene. More work is needed to evaluate the individual roles and combined impacts of the EASM, the westerlies and alpine glacier meltwater regulation on the NW China dryland dynamics. Abstract: This paper presents pollen analysis of badger coprolites from Cueva de los Torrejones, central Spain. Eleven of fourteen coprolite specimens showed good pollen preservation, acceptable pollen concentration, and diversity of both arboreal and herbaceous taxa, together with a number of non-pollen palynomorph types, especially fungal spores. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the coprolite collection derives from badger colonies that established setts and latrines inside the cavern over the last three centuries. The coprolite pollen record depicts a mosaic, anthropogenic landscape very similar to the present-day, comprising pine forests, Quercus-dominated formations, woodland patches with Juniperus thurifera, and a Cistaceae-dominated understorey with heliophytes and nitrophilous assemblages. Although influential, dietary behavior of the badgers does not preclude palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the coprolite pollen spectra. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Pollen, plant macrofossils, and micromammals are commonly used in paleoecological interpretations, but rarely are found associated because of distinctly separate taphonomic pathways into the fossil record. The Lilienthal local biota, dating between 5920±60 and 6300±80 14C B.P., is a rare exception as the site contains all three proxies juxtaposed in alluvium, impounded upstream from a fossil log near the headwaters of Mud Creek, east-central Iowa, U.S.A. A variety of taphonomic processes can strongly influence the composition of fossil assemblages. This paper compares the taphonomic framework for each fossil group, interprets the paleoecologic signal from each, and then compares the three interpretations. Pollen and plant macrofossils are found in organic silts, indicating deposition in a quiet water environment. Microvertebrates ordinarily occur in sand-sized sediments and show evidence of fluvial transport. Despite these different pathways, all Lilienthal assemblages indicate that a largely closed mesic deciduous forest grew along Mud Creek in mid-Holocene time. Therefore, a narrow north–south ecotone must have existed between the forest and tall-grass prairie biomes in eastern Iowa. Abstract: The analysis of oxygen isotope ratios (δ 18O) from authigenic lake carbonates has become a well-established palaeoclimate technique. Less common is the use of δ 18O in biogenic silica (e.g. diatoms, sponge spicules, phytoliths), but the technique is being increasingly utilised for non-carbonate lakes. This paper aims to compare δ 18Odiatom with δ 18Ocarbonate in a low latitude, closed basin lake. Due to the influence of pH, rarely are both carbonate and diatoms preserved in lake sediments in concentrations high enough to measure oxygen isotopes. The δ 18O composition of both carbonate and silica should reflect the isotope composition and temperature of the lake water at the time of precipitation and hence theoretically they should be equivalent. Only one comparative study of δ 18Odiatom and δ 18Ocarbonate currently exists and that found differences between their δ 18O compositions, probably because they precipitated in different seasons. Unless there is evidence to suggest that silica and carbonate precipitate at the same time, their δ 18O records are likely to be different but complementary. In this study, we show that δ 18Odiatom and δ 18Ocalcite from Lake Tilo, Ethiopia show some similar broad climate trends. However, the δ 18Odiatom curve is generally more variable and does not record two regional arid events, picked up by the δ 18Ocalcite data. Several possible reasons for this are discussed: the precision of the δ 18Odiatom extraction technique, contamination of the diatom samples from tephra (volcanic glass), vital effects in the diatom samples, differences in their respective equilibrium isotope fractionation rates and the possibility that the dominant diatom, Aulacoseira granulata, and calcite precipitated in different seasons during this time. Currently, the problems associated with the cleaning and extraction of δ 18Odiatom suggests that details found in δ 18Ocalcite records may be lost in δ 18Odiatom records where contaminants such as tephra and clay minerals are difficult to remove. In the southern tropical Andes, previous studies performed on lacustrine basins display large water-level fluctuations due to changes in the precipitation minus evaporation balance during the Holocene. Significant changes in groundwater levels were also inferred from river paleowetland deposits in northern Chile and the northern Bolivian Altiplano but the discrepancies which appeared in the data from paleolakes and paleowetlands are still not understood. In this paper we present stratigraphy and diatom analyses in new paleowetland records from non-glacial valleys. These data, compared with previous results, show that non-stormy precipitation (recorded by fine and/or organic sedimentation) dominated continuously from ∼11 200 to ∼1500 cal yr BP and that convective rainfall (recorded by strong erosion) occurred only episodically in the northern Altiplano. Convective rainfall was similar to the type of precipitation which nowadays occurs during the rainy season (austral summer) when the tropical easterlies from the Atlantic reach the Bolivian Andes. Non-stormy precipitation is interpreted as a result of an intensification of cold-air incursions from southern polar regions, in good agreement with data from Brazil. The maximum intensity in cold-air incursions occurred during the Early Holocene and coincided with a climatic optimum in Antarctica and a considerably reduced El Nin˜o Southern Oscillation (ENSO). During the Middle and Late Holocene, cold-air incursions decreased and the ENSO frequency increased. We suggest that the interactions between the southern high and low latitudes, by means of cold-air incursions and associated changes in the west wind flow, have been the main mechanisms involved in climatic changes at the latitudes of Bolivia. Shell concentrations are one of the most distinctive features of the Holocene coastal stratigraphy in the southern portion of Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil. In this paper, we integrated stratigraphic, geochronological, geophysical, and taphonomic data to discuss the processes involved in the genesis of shell concentrations in a siliciclastic and subtropical setting, a useful analogy for ancient shell concentrations in semi-closed environments affected by storms. The data indicated the succession of three facies associations (FA): bay, lagoon, and back-barrier. This succession implies a grain size fining-upward trend that is representative of a gradual shallowing. Interpretation of GPR sections revealed that the passage from the bay to lagoonal deposits occurred by forming a laterally continuous, high-amplitude surface overlain by sigmoidal reflections, which characterized the progressive basinward backstepping of the lagoonal margin. Shell concentrations in bay deposits are an allochthonous product of storm flows in shallow waters. In contrast, accumulations of the bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana had their valves reworked in the lagoonal margins and transported to the bottom, characterizing a parautochthonous accumulation. In this study, the correlation of taphonomy and grain size indicates that in bay FA, the loss of periostracum is correlated with increased gradients of fine sand, and part of the shell samples correlates to corrosion and abrasion in increased gradients of medium sand and decreased ones of fine sand. Additionally, in the lagoon FA, the loss of periostracum depends on the decrease in mud-enriched sediments and the increase in fine and medium sand, whereas brightness loss and color alteration are related to the increase in fine and medium sand, as well as margin modification. Corrosion was positively correlated to the mud-dominated fraction. • Dense concentrations of bivalve shells occur in the bay and lagoon facies association. • Allochthonous and parautochthonous bivalve shell concentrations were differentiated. • In bay FA, the loss of periostracum positively correlates to fine sand. • In the lagoon FA, corrosion was positively correlated to mud-dominated sediments. • Gradients of medium sand and fine sand correlated to corrosion and abrasion. This paper presents pollen analyses and radiocarbon dating on Crocuta coprolites from Las Ventanas (LV) and Carihuela (Car) Caves in southern Spain (Granada), with the aim of reconstructing the environmental conditions of these hominin sites. The LV coprolites are radiocarbon dated from c. 37,890 to 6980 cal yr BP, and the Car coprolites from c. 31,063 to 7861 cal yr BP. Overall, the palaeoecological scenario inferred from both coprolite series display similar patterns, with Pinus , Poaceae, and Artemisia as dominant during the full Pleistocene, and an important contribution of Quercus in the most recently dated coprolite samples. While the palynology is consistent with results of former investigations on the past environments in the region as obtained from other deposits (peat bogs, cave infills), the Late Glacial and Holocene chronology of several coprolites in both sites is in conflict with the generally accepted timing of extinction of Crocuta in western Europe. A discussion on the taphonomical processes and potential sources of carbon contamination of the radiocarbon samples is provided. Abstract: Criticisms of Bracco et al. (in press) about Martínez and Rojas (2013) are commented. We still claim that the sea level curve shown in the latter paper is the first statistically, testable curve produced for Uruguay. Previous attempts were made by hand. With the exception of some typographical errors correctly signaled by Bracco et al. (in press), it is demonstrated that their assumptions about our work are wrong and subjective.
