The Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS) is one of the most widely used measures of trait emotional intelligence. The aim of this study was to examine measurement equivalence and latent mean differences of the WLEIS across gender and age groups. The sample consisted of 1160 Chinese individuals aged 13–40 years. Confirmation factor analysis (CFA) replicated the original four-factor model previously found in other studies. Importantly, the multi-group CFA revealed that configural, metric and scalar invariance across gender and age groups were supported. Moreover, latent mean scores on the WLEIS subscales were comparable across gender and age groups. The implications of these findings are discussed in light of existing literature in the field. Abstract: This study aimed at examining the role of social support and self-esteem in the relationship between shyness and loneliness. The sample consisted of 399 college students, ranging in age from 18 to 30. Cheek and Buss shyness scale, multi-dimensional scale of perceived social support, Rosenberg self-esteem scale and emotional and social loneliness scale were used for data collection. Structural equation modeling showed partial mediation effects of social support and self-esteem between shyness and loneliness. Furthermore, a multi-group analysis found that shy male college students tend to have a more negative self-evaluation compared to their female counterparts. Abstract: This study examined the affective mediators of the relationship between trait emotional intelligence and life satisfaction in young adults and the widespread or limited affective mediators between the different groups in demographic factors, e.g., gender, students and non-students, family conditions. Six hundred and twenty participants completed the Wong Law Emotional Intelligence Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale. Results using structural equation modeling showed that both positive affect and negative affect acted as mediators of the relationship between trait EI and life satisfaction and the indirect effect of trait EI on life satisfaction via positive affect was stronger than that via negative affect. Moreover, multi-group analyses found that the paths did not differ by gender and family conditions, but positive affect was more strongly associated with students’ life satisfaction, compared to non-students. Abstract: In this study, the pivotal role of social support and emotional intelligence (EI) in mental distress and life satisfaction in a sample of Chinese young adults was investigated. The participants were 678 Chinese adults with an age range of 18–35years. Data were collected by using the Wong Law Emotional Intelligence Scale, the Multi-Dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the General Health Questionnaire. Path analysis showed that social support partially mediated the relationship between EI and life satisfaction as well as that between EI and mental distress. Furthermore, a multi-group analysis found that the males with high EI scores are more likely to gain greater social support from others than the female counterparts. Abstract: In this study, the mediator effects of self-esteem and humor style on the relationship between shyness and loneliness in Chinese college students were investigated. The participants were 525 students, with age range of 19–23, who were attending two different Chinese colleges in Xi’an and Fujian. Data were collected by using the Cheek and Buss shyness scale, Rosenberg self-esteem scale, humor style questionnaire and emotional and social loneliness scale. Path analysis showed that self-esteem and humor style partially mediated the relationship between shyness and loneliness. The final model also revealed a significant path from shyness through self-enhancing humor and self-esteem to loneliness. Furthermore, a multi-group analysis found that male college students who are less likely to use self-enhancing humor are more likely to result in loneliness than their female counterparts. This study examined the validity of two models predicting the relationship between shyness and loneliness: the cognitive bias and social network mediation models. Four hundred and eighty adolescents, with their age range between 14 and 18 years, were administered the Cheek and Buss Shyness Scale, Core Self-Evaluation Scale, Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Emotional and Social Loneliness Scale. Structural equation modeling showed that core self-evaluation and social support partially mediated the association between shyness and loneliness, and the mediating effect of social support was larger than that of core self-evaluation. In addition, a multiple-group analysis found that the paths for the mediation model did not differ between males and females, providing preparatory support to its robustness. Gratitude is considered to be a multidimensional construct consisting of both cognitive (cognitive appraisals of benefaction) and affective (feelings of gratitude) components, which is crucial for health and well-being. However, few studies have examined the cognitive-affective structure of gratitude and its associations with subjective well-being. Thus, the present study explored the two-dimensional structure of gratitude and its predictive effects on subjective well-being. Study 1 showed that the bi-factor structure of gratitude had the best fit with the data compared with the one- and two-factor models, and both general and affective gratitude positively predicted subjective well-being at the cross-sectional level. Study 2 further found that general gratitude positively predicted life satisfaction and positive affect after 3 months. However, cognitive gratitude negatively predicted subjective well-being at both cross-sectional and longitudinal levels. Therefore, future gratitude studies should consider the two-dimensional structure of gratitude. • We tested the cognitive-affective structure of gratitude. • The bi-factor model of gratitude fitted well. • General gratitude predicted life satisfaction and positive affect at both cross-sectional and longitudinal levels. • Affective gratitude positively predicted life satisfaction and positive affect cross-sectionally. • Cognitive gratitude negatively predicted life satisfaction and positive affect at both cross-sectional and longitudinal levels.
