The purpose of inventing a double stage Hall thruster is to control the propellant ionization and ion acceleration independently. In order to better understand the physics involved in such a thruster, an improved particle-in-cell method is used in this paper to simulate the discharge process. It is shown that the numerical features in the ionization stage accord well with the experimental results. It is also indicated that the ionization process and the acceleration process cannot be separated completely, as a relatively important ionization still occurs in the acceleration stage. Furthermore, an optimal threshold of ionization voltage in the ionization stage is existed to obtain the most favorable distributions of plasma parameters in the whole discharge channel. This paper presents a numerical model for the inception of positive dc corona discharges in air near cylindrical anodes, which plays a bridge role between the classic positive corona onset criterion and the photoionization model considering the effective radiation wavelength. The predicted onset voltages agree well with Peek's experimental data in a wide range of conductor radii and relative air densities. The influence of the collisional quenching of emitting excited states on the surface onset field is significant with low air density or small conductor radius. Within the effective radiation wavelength, numerical expressions for the photon absorption coefficient in air and Townsend's second coefficient due to photoionization are deduced on the basis of the new model. This paper presents a numerical study of the dynamic behavior of high-pressure mercury discharge lamp as a function of supply mode. Bidimensional time-dependent equations have been solved by using a semi-implicit finite-element code. The model has been developed in the frame of the local thermodynamic equilibrium hypothesis. After validation by using experimental data from the literature, this model was applied to analyze the effects of some key parameters such as frequency for an ac arc current and the ratio cycle parameter for square arc-current wave form on the convective process. The results obtained have been used to analyze the dynamic thermal behavior of high-pressure mercury plasma (pressure equal to 0.3 MPa) working under currents widely different in frequency and wave form. Narrow gap electronegative (EN) capacitive discharges are widely used in industry and have unique features not found in conventional discharges. In this paper, plasma parameters are determined over a range of decreasing gap length L from values for which an electropositive (EP) edge exists (2-region case) to smaller L-values for which the EN region connects directly to the sheath (1-region case). Parametric studies are performed at applied voltage Vrf=500 V for pressures of 10, 25, 50, and 100 mTorr, and additionally at 50 mTorr for 1000 and 2000 V. Numerical results are given for a parallel plate oxygen discharge using a planar 1D3v (1 spatial dimension, 3 velocity components) particle-in-cell (PIC) code. New interesting phenomena are found for the case in which an EP edge does not exist. This 1-region case has not previously been investigated in detail, either numerically or analytically. In particular, attachment in the sheaths is important, and the central electron density ne0 is depressed below the density nesh at the sheath edge. The sheath oscillations also extend into the EN core, creating an edge region lying within the sheath and not characterized by the standard diffusion in an EN plasma. An analytical model is developed using minimal inputs from the PIC results, and compared to the PIC results for a base case at Vrf=500 V and 50 mTorr, showing good agreement. Selected comparisons are made at the other voltages and pressures. A self-consistent model is also developed and compared to the PIC results, giving reasonable agreement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plasma stratification and excitation of ionization waves is one of the fundamental problems in gas discharge physics. Significant progress in this field is associated with the name of Lev Tsendin. He advocated the need for the kinetic approach to this problem contrary to the traditional hydrodynamic approach, introduced the idea of electron bunching in spatially periodic electric fields, and developed a theory of kinetic resonances for analysis of moving striations in rare gases. The present paper shows how Tsendin's ideas have been further developed and applied for understanding the nature of the well-known S-, P-, and R-striations observed in glow discharges of inert gases at low pressures and currents. We review numerical solutions of a Fokker-Planck kinetic equation in spatially periodic electric fields under the effects of elastic and inelastic collisions of electrons with atoms. We illustrate the formation of kinetic resonances at specific field periods for different shapes of injected Electron Distribution Functions (EDF). Computer simulations illustrate how self-organization of the EDFs occurs under nonlocal conditions and how Gaussian-like peaks moving along resonance trajectories are formed in a certain range of discharge conditions. The calculated EDFs agree well with the experimentally measured EDFs for the S, P, and R striations in noble gases. We discuss how kinetic resonances affect dispersion characteristics of moving striations and mention some non-linear effects associated with glow discharge stratification. It was proposed in this paper that the homogeneity of the atmospheric pressure discharge driven by an ac power source could be improved by applying an auxiliary low-amplitude rf power source. To verify the idea, a two-dimensional fluid model then was applied to study the atmospheric discharges in helium driven by ac power, low-amplitude rf power, and combined ac and low-amplitude rf power, respectively. Simulation results confirmed that an auxiliary rf power could improve the homogeneity of a discharge driven by an ac power source. It was further found that there existed a threshold voltage of the rf power source leading to the transition from inhomogeneous to homogeneous discharge. As the frequency of the rf power source increased from 2 to 22 MHz, the magnitude of the threshold voltage dropped first rapidly and then to a constant value. When the frequency was over 13.56 MHz, the magnitude of the threshold voltage was smaller than one-sixth of the ac voltage amplitude under the simulated discharge parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Arc discharge with catalyst-filled carbon anode in helium background was used for the synthesis of carbon nanoparticles. In this paper, we present the results of numerical simulation of carbon arc discharges with arc current varying from 10 A to 100 A in a background gas pressure of 68 kPa. Anode sublimation rate and current voltage characteristics are compared with experiments. Distribution of temperature and species density, which is important for the estimation of the growth of nanoparticles, is obtained. The probable location of nanoparticle growth region is identified based on the temperature range for the formation of catalyst clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
