Eulerian simulations of the Vlasov-Poisson equations have been employed to analyze the excitation of slow electrostatic fluctuations (with phase speed close to the electron thermal speed), due to a beam-plasma interaction, and their propagation in linear and nonlinear regimes. In 1968, O'Neil and Malmberg [Phys. Fluids 11, 1754 (1968)] dubbed these waves "beam modes." In the present paper, previous analytical results on the beam modes in both linear and nonlinear regimes have been revisited numerically, pointing out that, when an electron beam is launched in a plasma of Maxwellian electrons and motionless protons and this initial equilibrium is perturbed by a monochromatic density disturbance, the electric field amplitude grows exponentially in time and then undergoes nonlinear saturation, associated with the kinetic effects of particle trapping and phase space vortex generation. Moreover, new numerical results give evidence that, when the initial density perturbation is setup in the form of a low amplitude random phase noise, the whole Fourier spectrum of wavenumbers is excited. As a result, the electric field profile appears as a train of isolated pulses, each of them being associated with a phase space vortex in the electron distribution function. At later times, these vortical structures tend to merge and, correspondingly, the electric pulses collapse, showing the tendency towards a time asymptotic configuration characterized by the appearance of electric soliton-like pulses. Recent work investigating the interaction of magnetic islands with micro-turbulence has uncovered the striking observation of large scale vortex modes forming within the island structure [W. A. Hornsby et al., Phys. Plasmas 17, 092301 (2010)]. These electrostatic vortices are found to be the size of the island and are oscillatory. It is this oscillatory behaviour and the presence of turbulence that leads us to believe that the dynamics are related to the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM), and it is this link that is investigated in this paper. Here, we derive an equation for the GAM in the MHD limit, in the presence of a magnetic island modified three-dimensional axisymmetric geometry. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are calculated numerically and then utilised to analyse the dynamics of oscillatory large-scale electrostatic potential structures seen in both linear and non-linear gyro-kinetic simulations. The purpose of inventing a double stage Hall thruster is to control the propellant ionization and ion acceleration independently. In order to better understand the physics involved in such a thruster, an improved particle-in-cell method is used in this paper to simulate the discharge process. It is shown that the numerical features in the ionization stage accord well with the experimental results. It is also indicated that the ionization process and the acceleration process cannot be separated completely, as a relatively important ionization still occurs in the acceleration stage. Furthermore, an optimal threshold of ionization voltage in the ionization stage is existed to obtain the most favorable distributions of plasma parameters in the whole discharge channel. Experiments observed that the pulse duty cycle has effects on the plasma homogeneity in pulse-modulated radio frequency (rf) discharges. In this paper, pulse-modulated rf (13.56 MHz) helium discharges are theoretically investigated using a two dimensional fluid model. With the pulse period being fixed to 15 μs, it is found that when the pulse-on duration is over 4 μs, i.e., the duty cycle is larger than approximately 27%, the discharge transits from an inhomogeneous to a homogeneous mode in every specific part of each pulse cycle under currently-used simulation parameters. More quantitative analysis shows that the discharge becomes more homogeneous as the duty cycle is increased but does not reach complete homogeneity. In this paper, a one-dimensional model is explored to investigate the frequency effects on the characteristics of atmospheric radio frequency discharges at a given power. The simulation data and analytical results show that the improvement of electron density can be observed with better discharge stability by increasing excitation frequency in an appropriate range. Using the analytical equations deduced from the model, the mean electron density could be inferred by means of the measured parameters. This paper is a review of results by the group over the past decade on auroral kilometric radiation and similar cyclotron emissions from stars and planets. These emissions are often attributed to a horseshoe or crescent shaped momentum distribution of energetic electrons moving into the convergent magnetic field which exists around polar regions of dipole-type stars and planets. We have established a laboratory-based facility that has verified many of the details of our original theoretical description and agrees well with numerical simulations. The experiment has demonstrated that the horseshoe distribution does indeed produce cyclotron emission at a frequency just below the local cyclotron frequency, with polarization close to X-mode and propagating nearly perpendicularly to the beam motion. We discuss recent developments in the theory and simulation of the instability including addressing a radiation escape problem and the effect of competing instabilities, relating these to the laboratory, space, and astrophysical observations. The interaction of an ultraintense laser pulse with a conical target is studied by means of numerical particle-in-cell simulations in the context of fast ignition. The divergence of the fast electron beam generated at the tip of the cone has been shown to be a crucial parameter for the efficient coupling of the ignition laser pulse to the precompressed fusion pellet. In this paper, we demonstrate that a focused hot electron beam is produced at the cone tip, provided that electron currents flowing along the surfaces of the cone sidewalls are efficiently generated. The influence of various interaction parameters over the formation of these wall currents is investigated. It is found that the strength of the electron flows is enhanced for high laser intensities, low density targets, and steep density gradients inside the cone. The hot electron energy distribution obeys a power law for energies of up to a few MeV, with the addition of a high-energy Maxwellian tail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent work, a technique was developed to extract high quality beams from single-component plasmas confined in a Penning-Malmberg trap in a 4.8 T magnetic field. In this paper, a procedure is developed to extract these beams from the confining magnetic field and then focus them to create especially tailored electrostatic beams. Electron beams are extracted from the field in two stages: they are first transported to a region of reduced field (1 mT), and then taken to zero field with a nonadiabatic, fast extraction. Once in the field-free region, the beams are focused using an Einzel lens. Experimental results and numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the extraction and focusing process. Theoretical expressions are developed to describe the modifications to the relevant beam energy and spatial distributions. Where possible, analytic expressions are presented for the case relevant here of beams with Gaussian radial profiles. Beam emittance considerations are discussed as well as prospects for further development of these techniques. Application of these techniques to provide high-quality positron beams is also discussed. The energy transport associated with the fast magnetosonic turbulence in a low-beta plasma is one of the possible driving forces of the solar wind. Two different kinds of the turbulence spectra are discussed in this paper: a unidirectional spectrum of the fluctuations propagating away from the sun and a bidirectional spectrum composed of the sunward and antisunward modes. The evolution of the system is analyzed with the help of hybrid numerical simulations at the proton kinetic scales. It is shown that in the unidirectional case, the heating is always preferentially across the background magnetic field. It is this property that allows the solar wind plasma to be propelled away from the sun by the mirror force of the inhomogeneous magnetic field. Adding the counterpropagating modes reverses the sense of the energy deposition with the parallel heating now dominating the process. However, the parallel heating is produced mostly by fast modes propagating along the magnetic field. If these modes are eliminated, the heating becomes perpendicular again. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a complex plasma, charged microparticles ('dust') are added to a background of ions, electrons, and neutral particles. This dust fully interacts with the surrounding plasma and self-consistently alters the plasma environment leading to the emergence of new plasma behavior. Numerical tools that complement experimental investigations can provide important insights into the properties of complex plasmas. This paper discusses a newly developed code, named DEMON (dynamic exploration of microparticle clouds optimized numerically), for simulating a complex plasma. The DEMON code models the behavior of the charged particle component of a complex plasma in a uniform plasma background. The key feature of the DEMON code is the use of a modular force model that allows a wide variety of experimental configurations to be studied without varying the core code infrastructure. Plasma from the Earth’s magnetosheath has previously been observed inside the magnetosphere. Inhomogeneities in the magnetosheath plasma, here called plasmoids, can impact the magnetopause and doing so set up a polarizing field that allows it to penetrate the magnetopause and enter the magnetosphere. A set of simulations of plasmoids with different dimensions is presented in this paper. For plasmoids that are longer than those previously published, waves propagating upstream from the barrier are found. It is also found that the penetration process causes the part of the plasmoid that is upstream of the barrier to rotate. The role of plasmoid width and cross sectional shape in penetration is studied, and for plasmoids that are less than half an ion gyroradius wide, the plasmoid is compressed to obtain a vertically oriented elliptical cross section, regardless of the initial shape. When the initial plasmoid width exceeds the ion gyroradius, the plasmoid still penetrates through a mechanism involving a potential that propagates upstream from the magnetic barrier. Instead of the slab channel model used in previous work, a cylindrical model representing the actual annular channel in Hall-type stationary plasma thrusters is introduced in this paper for the near wall conductivity (NWC) effect on the current profile. The electron dynamics process in the plasma, however, is still described by the same test particle method in current theories where electrons are randomly emitted into the plasma from the wall to simulate electron scattering on the insulating wall. Monte Carlo method is applied to solve the model. The numerical results show that the current density peaks due to NWC near the inner wall of the channel is different from that near the outer wall, a typical annular effect other than in the slab model where the two current peaks are the same, and the ratio of them is approximately the same as the ratio of the inner and outer radii. Besides, the integrated current in the thin layer near the wall grows linearly with the electric field and quadratically with the inversed magnetic field. The peak current profile shifts to the center of the annular channel as the magnetic field decreases. These simulation results are in accord with the experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Arc discharge with catalyst-filled carbon anode in helium background was used for the synthesis of carbon nanoparticles. In this paper, we present the results of numerical simulation of carbon arc discharges with arc current varying from 10 A to 100 A in a background gas pressure of 68 kPa. Anode sublimation rate and current voltage characteristics are compared with experiments. Distribution of temperature and species density, which is important for the estimation of the growth of nanoparticles, is obtained. A positive slope in a velocity distribution function perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, such as due to a loss cone or ring velocity distribution, can become a free energy source for the excitation of various plasma waves. Since there exists no analytic expression for integrals of Maxwellian ring velocity distribution functions, their linear properties have previously been studied using several approximations or modeled distributions. In this paper, a numerical method for analyzing the linear dispersion relation for Maxwellian ring-beam velocity distributions is developed.
