This paper presents the first palaeodemographic results of a newly assembled region-wide radiocarbon record of the Arctic regions of northern Norway. The dataset contains a comprehensive collection of radiocarbon dates in the area (N = 1205) and spans the 10,000-year period of hunter-gatherer settlement history from 11500 to 1500 cal BP. Utilizing local, high-resolution palaeoclimate data, the paper performs multi-proxy correlation testing of climate and demographic dynamics, looking for hunter-gatherer responses to climate variability. The paper compares both long-term climate trends and short-term disruptive climate events with the demographic development in the region. The results demonstrate marked demographic fluctuations throughout the period, characterized by a general increase, punctuated by three significant boom and bust-cycles centred on 6000, 3800 and 2200 cal BP, interpreted as instances of climate forcing of human demographic responses. The results strongly suggest the North Cape Current as a primary driver in the local environment and supports the patterns of covariance between coastal climate proxies and the palaeodemographic model. A mechanism of climate forcing mediation through marine trophic webs is proposed as a tentative explanation of the observed demographic fluxes, and a comparison with inter-regional results demonstrate remarkable similarity in demographic trends across mid-Holocene north and west Europe. The results of the north Norwegian radiocarbon record are thus consistent with independent, international efforts, corroborating the existing pan-European results and help further substantiate super-regional climate variability as the primary driver of population dynamics regardless of economic adaptation. An overview of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene stratigraphy of the southeastern White Sea region is presented in the paper, based upon the analysis of published data, new results, and correlation between marine and terrestrial archives. The Pleistocene stratigraphic record in the southeastern White Sea region begins with Mikulino Horizon, which comprises the whole MIS 5 and is composed of marine sediments – sands, sandy clays and clays – with Boreal, Arctic–Boreal and Lusitanean–Boreal microfauna and mollusc fauna, dated back at 161–77 ka. The Podporozhie Horizon in the southeastern White Sea region comprises the MIS 4 (71–57 ka) complex of marine mostly near-shore sediments. The glaciation during MIS 4 was localized, on one hand, within the Kola Peninsula. On the other hand, the glacier probably overlapped the Kanin Peninsula and the Mezen Bay, however the Gorlo Strait was not blocked and the northward river outflow was preserved. The Leningrad Horizon had been formed also in the marine sedimentation pattern during the MIS 3 (57–29 ka). However, the lack of data in the region allows us to make only the comparative analysis. The Ostashkov Horizon (MIS 2, 29–11.7 ka) is composed of the deposits of glacial paragenetic series: tills, glaciofluvial, glaciomarine, and glaciolacustrine deposits, but also comprises the deglaciation (Late Glacial) sedimentary complex including marginal tills. The Holocene stratigraphic record is subdivided into three stages – 11.7–9.5, 9.5–3.5 and 3.5–0 ka BP, and do not match with new formal stratigraphic subdivision of the Holocene series. Modern Arctic Indigenous peoples face many interconnected pressures, not the least of which is anthropogenic climate change, which is emerging as one of the most dramatic drivers of social and economic change in recent memory. In this paper, we investigate whether or not insights into premodern strategies for coping with climate change—and especially the "deeper histories" of traditional ways-of-knowing—can play a useful role in future planning, management and mitigation efforts. We do this in two ways. First, we assess this special issue's 17 archaeological case studies, in order to determine whether they are conducted within a framework that is consistent with approaches to resilience in studies of modern Arctic communities. Second, we focus on three climate-driven challenges faced by Canadian Arctic Inuit: safe travel, food security and food safety. For each, we identify specific ways in which studies of past social-ecological systems intersect with modern climate adaptation. We conclude that since archaeological insights highlight the operation of decision-making processes within long-term culture-adaptive trajectories, they can offer unique insights into the much shorter-term processes currently underway. While we highlight many potential directions for productive collaboration, much more work is required in local and regional settings to demonstrate the full potential of archaeology for future-oriented planning and mitigation efforts. Most parts of the Circumpolar Arctic have only discontinuous evidence for long-term human settlement. In contrast, Northern Norway has an unbroken archaeological record that extends back to the early Holocene. Numerous high-resolution archaeological and palaeoenvironmental records have been generated by commercial excavations and surveys, offering archaeologists unique opportunities to investigate long-term human ecodynamics in an Arctic coastal setting. To date, however, deeper analysis of the new datasets has yet to be undertaken. This paper aims to present a new synthesis of early and mid Holocene archaeological and paleoenvironmental sequences for Western Finnmark (11500-2000 cal BP). This enables us to identify three major phases of culture change that broadly correlate with climatic and environmental shifts. We then present emerging results from our multi-scalar analysis of the processes driving these transformations. At supra-regional and regional scales, our palaeodemographic modelling indicates major population events centered around 6000 cal BP and 4000 cal BP. At intra-regional scales, we are identifying spatial clustering of prehistoric settlements into local socio-economic communities. At the scale of local settlements, our analysis of house-pit chronologies is clarifying the degree of simultaneous occupation and re-use. We also draw on recent research into rock art and ritual landscapes in an effort to reconstruct the relationship between settlement clusters and general interaction patterns. Integration of these diverse lines of evidence is generating a vivid picture of thriving Arctic coastal communities, with indications that the timing and pace of cultural responses to climatic and environmental changes were more complex than previously thought. This paper presents a new decadal-resolution fossil pollen record from Lake Kotokel (52°47′N, 108°07′E, 458 m a.s.l.) and provides a reconstruction of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) vegetation and environments in the study area during this interval of globally harsh climate. Lake Kotokel is situated close to the eastern shoreline of Lake Baikal, in the boreal forest zone of southern Siberia. The analysed 190 cm long section 6 of the bottom core KTK10 (KTK10/6) consists of compact, undisturbed, greenish-grey to dark-grey, slightly laminated silty clay indicating continuous lacustrine sedimentation throughout the LGM period ca. 26.8–19.1 cal. ka BP. The age model is supported by 11 calibrated AMS dates. The results of pollen analysis and pollen-based biome reconstruction show that steppe and tundra vegetation composed of grasses and various herbs dominated ca. 26.8–19.1 cal. ka BP. Occurrence of conifer tracheids and stomata throughout the record, together with small quantities of boreal conifer and broadleaf tree and shrub taxa pollen, suggests the presence of single trees or small forest stands in the lake vicinity, most likely in the river valleys. Application of the biomisation method and the resulting numerical scores of the most characteristic biomes (steppe, tundra and cold deciduous forest) show minor fluctuations, signifying stability of the regional vegetation cover during the analysed LGM interval. In contrast to the regional biomes, the local environmental indicators demonstrate greater sensitivity of the lake system to decadal- and century-scale climate variability. The highest pollen percentages of Ranunculaceae, representing littoral/meadow vegetation communities, are registered ca. 23.8–23.4 cal. ka BP. This and an increase in coarse-grained sand particles together with slightly increased total inorganic carbon (TIC) values representing calcite in the KTK10/6 sediment provide evidence of a much shorter than present distance between the coring site and the shoreline and a reduced lake area, in line with a drier-than-present LGM climate. A general stability of the grassland vegetation in the study region ca. 26.8–19.1 cal. ka BP and relatively constant total organic carbon (TOC) values support the hypothesis that this productive vegetation could stably serve as a perennial food resource for large populations of herbivores, thus providing favourable environments for the local hunter–gatherers inhabiting the Lake Baikal region during the LGM interval. Abstract: This paper discusses temporal variability in the biogeochemical properties of the deeper permafrost soils of Western Spitsbergen, Arctic, that dates back up to the Middle Weichselian period (44.8ka BP). Results indicate that during the mid of the last interstadial (∼37ka BP) the chemical and biological properties of the soils were different from the stadial period that followed. Trace element concentration during the period remained low. Electrical conductivity along with K, Mg, Na, SO4 −2, Cl− and HCO3 − content of the soils during this period was high. Mineralizable nitrogen, organic carbon, biomass nitrogen and total bacterial counts were also high. These observations concurrently lead to a conclusion that the soils of Western Spitsbergen during the interstadial period were under marine influence. The culturability of bacterial cells was low which increased later with the onset of the stadial. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper presents results of morphoscopic studies of quartz grains recovered from sands underlying surficial peat over the West Siberian Plain. The field materials were collected in the course of the Russian–American expedition in 1999–2001. The data obtained proved the existence of a vast area in West Siberia similar to cold deserts in appearance at the late glacial time (and probably even as early as the Last Glacial Maximum – 18–20 ka BP). The desert was confined to the arctic and temperate belts, the southernmost part of the plain being an area of loess accumulation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
