Offshore wind energy and wave energy are two exploitable sources of renewable energy available in the same marine environment. A co-located energy harvesting system of these two resources has the potential to play a leading role in the recent renewable energy mix mandate. A co-located system of mature offshore wind technology and a nascent wave energy technology can exploit the synergies of the two technologies, including the reduced cost, the easy operation and maintenance, and more importantly the potential of decreased power variability. This paper deals with a multi-site analysis of wind and wave power resources, and the estimation of exploitable energy through different wind turbines and wave energy converters (WECs). Results are presented for NSW Australia, but the devised strategy is generic and can be implemented in any region. Ten WECs, with different operating principles, are used for the estimation of the exploitable wave power, and the best performing converter is considered for the co-located wind-wave farm. A power fluctuation factor is introduced to quantify the reduction in power variability of the co-located wind-wave farm. Over the last decade, the electricity sector has seen a significant increase in the number of residential battery systems, as well as increasing interest in using them to reduce demand during network peaks. Although there is an abundance of literature assessing this ability using modelled residential batteries, there is a lack of detailed assessment using deployed residential batteries. This paper analyses 1-min resolution data from 15 non-coordinated residential batteries deployed in Australia across 6 network peak demand periods. A novel metric was used to quantify errors in BESS load-following, which occurred when the batteries did not completely mitigate grid import and export even when they had sufficient energy capacity and rated power. On average the 15 batteries discharged around 25% of their rated power during network demand peaks, whereas those that load-followed discharged around 40%. Despite the small sample size, these results suggest that the outcomes from modelled batteries represent the ideal upper bound and the actual performance of some batteries is likely to be lower. This there is a need for more research into the actual operation of deployed batteries, and what this means for the current modelled findings regarding their ability to reduce demand during network peaks. • Analysis of operation of residential batteries (BESS) was performed using 1-min data. • Examined 90 cases of response from uncoordinated BESS during demand peaks. • In 44 cases, the uncoordinated BESS reduced household grid import on average by 90%. • Those BESS discharged on average 40%–50% of their rated power during the peaks. • Coordinating residential BESS may potentially double their demand peak reduction. The peak period of an energy-generating wave is one of the most important parameters that describe the spectral shape of the oceanic wave, as this indicates the duration for which the waves prevail with respect to their maximum extractable energy. In this paper, a half-hourly peak wave energy period (T P) forecast model is constructed using a suite of statistically significant lagged inputs based on the partial auto-correlation function with an extreme learning machine model developed and its predictive utility is benchmarked against deep learning models, i.e., convolutional neural network (CNN/CovNet) and recurrent neural network (RNN) models and other traditional M5tree, Conditional Maximization based Multiple Linear Regression (MLR-ECM) and MLR models. The objective model (ELM) vs. the comparison models (CNN, RNN, M5tree, MLR-ECM, and MLR) were trained and validated independently on the test dataset obtained from coastal zones of eastern Australia that have a high potential for implementation of wave energy generation systems. The outcomes ascertain that the ELM model can generate significantly accurate predictions of the half-hourly peak wave energy period, providing a good level of accuracy relative to deep learning models in selected coastal study zones. Hydrogen has become an important component of the global transition to zero-carbon economies. Low-carbon and green hydrogen gas and fuel cell technology for domestic household use will depend on skilled practitioners, particularly gasfitters, to convert, install, and maintain hydrogen-based appliances. Upskilling gasfitters to work with hydrogen is critical to transitioning from natural gas to hydrogen for heating and cooking. Yet, limited research exists on training and upskilling trade practitioners in the context of renewable energy and low-carbon technologies. This paper makes a novel contribution to research on upskilling for renewable and low-carbon technologies by drawing on the findings from a survey of 1001 plumbers in Australia. The survey, designed using the Theory of Planned Behavior, aimed to predict behaviors regarding hydrogen training and ascertain social and structural enablers for such behavior. The results show that plumbers have limited awareness of hydrogen, yet have positive attitudes towards upskilling to work with the low-carbon fuel. Perceived benefits to business sustainability, customer service and safety underpin the positive attitudes. Towards decarbonizing the global economy, hydrogen produced through water electrolysis is expected to be one of the key solutions for variable renewable energy storage and sector coupling, in particular, via the transport sector in the next few decades. Even though water is an important aspect of the environmental impact, the impact assessment of hydrogen production on water is lacking. This paper proposes a comprehensive methodology for assessing the water footprints of hydrogen production from electrolysis. A major innovative aspect is to demonstrate the geographical distribution of the footprints along the supply chain. The water footprints for hydrogen produced from grid electricity, wind and solar power in Australia was analysed as a case study. Sensitivity analysis was used to evaluate the influence of key parameters including Solar Radiation Level, Silicon Efficiency, and Lifetime of PV Modules. The study finds that the water consumption footprint is much less than that reported in the literature and large part of the water could be consumed indirectly outside of hydrogen producing countries. The quantity of water footprint varies significantly among different assumptions. To meet the future energy demand and avert any looming crises, efforts are being carried out to utilize sustainable and renewable energy resources. In this paper, the naturally occurring non-linearity and non-stationarity deficiencies within the climatological predictors to forecast solar radiation (Rdn) are resolved via a multivariate empirical mode decomposition method (MEMD). First, a set of antecedent weekly lags at timescale (t -1) of input datasets were collated and then were divided into training and testing subsets. The MEMD method is restricted to dissolve the training and testing climatic data independently into intrinsic modes functions (IMFs). As the numbers of total IMFs were very large, the singular value decomposition (SVD) algorithm is accustomed for dimensionality reduction simultaneously capturing the most relevant oscillatory features embedded within the IMFs. Finally, the random forest (RF) model is applied to forecast Rdn at selected solar-rich regions in Australia. The resulting hybrid MEMD-SVD-RF model was established as a consequence of the aforementioned modelling strategy. The results are benchmarked with other comparative models. An accurate predictive model is essential for monitoring the energy produced by a solar system based on different meteorological parameters. In the present paper, a novel machine-learning model named DNN-RODDPSO is proposed to improve the real-time prediction accuracy of the hourly energy produced by four dual-axis solar trackers. This model integrates a new deep neural network (DNN) model with a recent variant of PSO algorithm referred to as a randomly occurring distributed delayed particle swarm optimization (RODDPSO) algorithm. This algorithm is adopted to enhance the training process of the DNN model by reducing the risk of being trapped into local optima and for the search space diversification. Furthermore, to develop the DNN-RODDPSO model, the hourly observations of seven meteorological parameters including time variable measured during 2014–2015 in Alice Springs city, Australia, are used. This model integrates two novel hidden layers, the first one is a selective layer based on daytime/nighttime data selection. The second one named automatic inputs relevance determination to point out the most relevant inputs for an accurate prediction. The decreasing cost of solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power technologies makes 100% renewable energy systems economically viable. Building more capacity to mitigate periods of low solar and wind supply results in systems that produce surplus energy at other times. As these surpluses vary across time and space, it becomes crucial to map their geographic distribution and quantify their magnitude. This paper presents the largest geographic and longest time series analysis of oversizing solar PV and wind in the context of the Australian National Electricity Market. We examine the additional solar, wind and battery capacity required to meet 100% of demand between 2010 and 2020. Without battery storage, this is achieved by generating approximately four times demand at an average production cost 28% lower than recent wholesale electricity prices. The addition of 1–8 h of storage reduces the average production cost by 55% compared to recent prices. Our analysis also investigates the spatiotemporal characteristics of surplus energy generation under different scenarios. The main focus of this paper is to select an economically suitable sustainable standalone power supply system for a remote off-grid town in Western Australia. Existing power systems of such remote towns in Australia have adverse environmental impacts and contribute to global warming due to the utilization of fossil fuels, especially diesel and gas. The possible electricity supply systems for such towns can vary from a diesel/gas generator towards a hybrid system composed of a generator, wind turbine, photovoltaic system, and battery energy storage. In order to limit the cost of the system and to propose the most economically feasible solution, various combinations of supply systems are considered. These systems are analyzed in this paper by the help of HOMER software to determine the optimal architecture and the control strategy of the supply system. This study has used real demand data of the town, as well as the prices of different electrical components in the Australian market. The scenario which yields the minimum cost of energy is defined and suggested. Also, a decision-making based technique is proposed to help the local electricity utility in finding the suitable solution in the case of budget limits on the investment and annual operation and maintenance. Another aim of this analysis is to investigate and illustrate the impact of a small annual load growth on the size of the selected components for the selected power system, as well as the total net present cost and the cost of electricity. A sensitivity analysis is also performed to analyze the impact of uncertainties of some of the parameters in the outcome of the study to obtain the optimized cost of the selected system. Abstract This paper analyzes the ongoing transition to sustainable energy in Australia, moving from traditional large-scale plants to distributed renewable generation by studying the time series of coal and gas consumption as well as onshore wind and solar. Even though most of energy generation, especially in the form of electricity is currently being generated from coal and gas, a quantitative assessment of their evolution is necessary to understand whether, and to which extent, renewables are competing in the marketplace with conventional production means. A well-accepted innovation diffusion model is used to capture and interpret the underlying dynamics of the competitive transition in generation. The results show that renewables are exerting a competitive pressure on coal and collaborate with gas towards the transition. The view that gas should play a key role in transition is confirmed by our findings, because it is found to have a competitive role towards coal, while aiding the uptake of renewables. Both developed and developing countries have committed to reduce their emissions through the increased use of renewable energy. This paper aims to compare renewable energy deployment in developed and developing countries represented by Australia and China. The paper firstly argues the validity of comparison of renewable energy deployment in Australia and China. Then, the governance structures in both countries are compared; the paper also compares management mechanisms in terms of funding and incentive support, renewable energy grid-connection and coordination between different levels of governments in both countries. Moreover, the current status of renewable energy development in two countries is summarized. From the study, it can be concluded both countries have set a Renewable Energy Target and promulgated legislation and regulations to enlarge the scale of renewable energy; China shows a stronger commitment to renewable energy than Australia. However, Renewable Energy Certificate mechanism is implemented more effectively in Australia than in China. The paper suggests: augmenting and rebuilding the electricity network and strengthening coordination between different levels of governments for both countries; enhancing manufacturing facilities and incentives for the solar and wind industry for Australia, while developing more-detailed implementation legislation and renewable power quota system for China. This paper examines changes in Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) generator output due to several large wind farm power variations occurring in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) during 2012 and 2013. Using data from actual FCAS generator output fluctuations during selected storm events and reconstructed heat rate curves for each FCAS generator, the authors address the research question of what effect such variations have on net carbon emissions from electricity generation, given balancing fossil-fueled FCAS generators will be pushed back into less efficient operating ranges. The study finds that, for all storm events evaluated, net carbon emissions decreased with each large increase in wind power, even though FCAS generator carbon intensity increased in two of the three events. This finding is consistent with the conclusions of other studies that while FCAS generators do move into less efficient operating ranges, the generation of zero carbon emission wind power displaces other fossil fuel generators and more than compensates for this efficiency reduction, creating an overall positive carbon effect. This is a significant finding as it shows that the inclusion of wind farms in the generation mix serving the Australian NEM can lower carbon emissions in both short and long time frames. This paper focuses on the calculation of the carbon footprint of a typical West Australian mine site village and the ways by which it can be reduced to a point where the village can be legitimately described as ‘carbon neutral’. The study contributes to a broader ARC joint research program by Murdoch and Curtin Universities entitled ‘Decarbonising Cities and Regions’. The term carbon neutral has a far from uniform definition. For the purpose of the carbon accounting that follows carbon neutrality is achieved when there is a net zero carbon footprint across the full life cycle or when total emissions are balanced by total offsets. As much of the full life cycle of the village as is practical is included in the process and acknowledges any omissions made. The paper will show how the carbon footprint of a mine site village in Western Australia's mid-west has been measured, calculated and reduced effectively to a point where carbon neutrality can be claimed. This will commence with calculation of the embodied and operational energy in constructing and operating the village, followed by methods towards achieving carbon neutrality. The latter includes energy efficiency opportunities; an environmental and economic sustainability assessment of renewable energy and construction materials; design modification of the infrastructure; and assessment of accredited biomass offset mechanisms. The whole process has been termed LEVI©, Low Energy Village Infrastructure. An economic assessment of the carbon neutral strategy is the key to implementation. Mining companies are particularly drawn to the ‘bottom line’ when making investment decisions and only sound financial analysis will facilitate substantial carbon neutral expenditure. LEVI© significantly includes a net present cost (NPC) analysis of all such investment and belies the myth that carbon neutral mine site accommodation cannot be achieved. The paper then presents a carbon accounting methodology of the case study mine site village and set out the results and overall carbon emissions the village is responsible for. This life cycle analysis (LCA) is done from cradle to gate in terms of LCA terminology and represents the manufacture, construction, installation and operation. Energy efficiencies and behavioural changes are then applied and estimated as to their carbon reductive effect on the total carbon, followed by verifiable renewable energy offsets. These offsets are substantiated by a vigorous renewable energy analysis and selection supported by an NPC analysis. An optimum renewable energy system (RE) is then selected (best value for money) and its carbon reducing effect over the current power system calculated. This amount, together with that produced by energy efficiencies and behavioural changes, makes a total carbon reduction and is annualised. The paper clearly shows that the projected life of the mine, and therefore the village, is a critical factor in the overall carbon analysis and that the optimum time period within which carbon neutrality of such a mine site village can be claimed lays somewhere between 7 and 10 years. Another key finding was that the capital expenditure (CAPEX) savings by developing such a village as a standalone facility produces clear advantages over connection to a mine power generation system as is the case study example. The optimum standalone RE system for introduction from 2014 was found to be 110 kW fixed amorphous photovoltaic array and two 100 kW wind turbines with one 150 kW and one 100 kW low-cycle diesel generators as a backup. The projected cost was approximately $2 million. It is contended that the metrics produced from the results can provide a pro-rata basis with which to model future carbon neutral villages of similar construction. The model accommodates dependencies such as life of mine, size of village, number of workers and location. Abstract: The concept of net zero energy and zero emission home has been a goal for those involved in the sustainable building industry. It is now becoming a reality in many parts of the world with an integrated approach of passive design, energy efficient appliances and local renewable generation. The paper describes the activities in Australia focussing on reducing energy use from the housing sector. It describes the regulatory approach of energy performance for housing which involves developing a house energy rating tool covering the building envelope as well as major energy consuming appliances. It also describes the implementation process which comprises gradually more stringent regulations coupled with financial inducements. The paper describes a world leading new Australian housing development where net zero energy homes are being built and enjoyed. It tells the story of how this outcome is being achieved starting with the planning process and developing environmental guidelines. In the last decade, multiple studies focusing on national-scale assessments of the ocean wave energy resource in Australia identified the Southern Margin to be one of the most energetic areas worldwide suitable for the extraction of wave energy for electricity production. While several companies have deployed single unit devices, the next phase of development will most likely be the deployment of parks with dozens of units, introducing the risk of conflicts within the marine space. This paper presents a geo-spatial multi-criteria evaluation approach to identify optimal locations to deploy a wave energy farm while minimizing potential conflicts with other coastal and offshore users. The methodology presented is based around five major criteria: ocean wave climatology, nature of the seabed, distance to key infrastructure, environmental factors and potential conflict with other users such as shipping and fisheries. A case study is presented for an area off the south-east Australian coast using a total of 18 physical, environmental and socio-economic parameters. The spatial restrictions associated with environmental factors, wave climate, as well as conflict of use, resulted in an overall exclusion of 20% of the study area. Highly suitable areas identified ranged between 11 and 34% of the study area based on scenarios with varying criteria weighting. By spatially comparing different scenarios we identified persistence of a highly suitable area of 700 km 2 off the coast of Portland across all model domains investigated. We demonstrate the value of incorporation spatial information at the scale relevant to resource exploitation when examining multiple criteria for optimal site selection of Wave Energy Converters over broad geographic regions. Abstract: Wave energy is increasingly being seen as an alternative source of low-emissions power particularly for Australia, as Australia has abundant wave resources. This paper, using the performance characteristics of wave energy converters (WEC), resource measurements along Australia''s southern coastline and global resource estimates, models projections of the future uptake of wave energy globally and in Australia. Globally, wave farms are projected to be installed up to a presumed maximum limit of 500 GW. In Australia there is more variability in the amount of wave farms installed, with differences across the different WEC. The outcome globally and in Australia depends on variations in the average power generated by the WEC and the carbon price path. In Australia, the majority of projected WEC installations are in the state of Victoria, which has relatively high demand and currently highly-emissions intensive sources of generation compared to states with better wave resources. When a dispatchable, or continuous power ability is added to wave energy''s output the uptake of wave energy increases in Australia, in those states with the best resources. When the amount of wave energy extractable in any region is increased or decreased it has a large effect on output in Victoria in particular, which generates power from wave energy up to 30% of the total extractable resource under the dispatchable power scenario. Abstract: Despite possessing a very large potential of renewable energy sources, Australia has lagged behind other developed countries in embracing renewable energy. Various programs and policies have been devised and implemented by Australian governments. Nevertheless, the proportion of renewable energy in electricity generation in Australia has not increased significantly. This paper seeks to explain why Australia has difficulties in adopting renewable energy by using the Political Aspect of Innovation (PAI) framework to examine the causes and barriers that have blocked the taking up of renewable energy. The PAI framework is concerned specifically with public innovation policy in Australia and the way it aims to encourage and support investment in new technology development. Abstract: Over the past decade, several new approaches have emerged to renewable energy education that seek to address the needs of the 21st century for sustainable energy supply systems. In addition, unlike conventional architectural education which does not cover renewable energy issues in its curriculum, these days, renewable energy education has an identity of its own within the discipline of architecture. This paper will clarify academic obstacles that are impeding the development of sustainable architectural education. These obstacles include: ambiguous definitions of sustainable architecture, confusion over the meaning of sustainability, and lack of experts in this field. In the last part of this paper we compare academic architectural education in the field of renewable energy in two countries, Iran as a developing country in Asia and Australia as a developed country in Oceania. Calculation of wind power capacity values for risk assessment of power system adequacy has attracted great attention in the literature. And the most popular approach has been the Effective Load Carrying Capability (ELCC) method which allows for the consideration of key factors such as wind capacity factor, forced outage rates (F.O.R) of conventional power stations, system reliability targets, and the correlation between wind availability and system load. However, comparatively little attention has been paid to analysing the effects of other factors such as the number of wind farms and wind installed capacity, the length of historic time series data on demand and wind resources. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of how these factors influence the calculation of capacity value for the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) power system using metered half-hourly wind and load data for 2006 to 2013. The analysis incorporates the periods with extreme risk events. Our results show that capacity values depend greatly on the design of the simulation model used, and highlight the importance of capturing wind and load data points relating to extremely high demand periods. Residential or ‘rooftop’ solar PV can play an important role in providing renewable energy, thus offsetting fossil fuel based generation and associated greenhouse gas emissions. In Australia, subsidies are offered to encourage the deployment of residential PV in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Feed-in Tariffs (FiTs). This paper provides a literature review of existing work which assesses renewable energy in Australia, and delves deeper into a residential PV specific analysis of available data across the five criteria of installation, employment, market maturity, FiT settings and environmental outcomes to assess successes, failures and impacts of Australian residential PV policies between 2001 and 2012. This analysis identifies overall success with regard to environmental and deployment goals, and limited success in the goal of renewable energy industry promotion, which is devoid of indigenous manufacturing. In addition, impacts, including the dominance of the FiT as the initial stimulus for rapid PV deployment, cost impacts on electricity bills for various FiT settings, and the dependence of PV employment numbers on the continuation of the FiT are also identified. Abstract: Effective policy and regulatory frameworks are paramount to incentivising the deployment of renewable energy to achieve long term reductions in carbon emissions. Australia's renewable energy policy has taken significant steps towards encouraging the deployment of lower-emission energy generation. Significant policy barriers still exist at the federal and state levels, however, which have reduced the effectiveness of a concerted national effort to deploy renewables. The current policy landscape has favoured mature technologies which present the lowest investment risk at the expense of emerging options which may present greater efficiency and emissions reduction gains. The lack of support for emerging technologies delays their effective deployment and the accumulation of highly skilled human capital, until the medium to long term. This paper outlines the key policy frameworks, incentives and regulatory environment which encompasses the renewable energy sector, and presents a critical analysis of the barriers faced by the industry. Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the costs of concentrating solar power (CSP) deployed internationally and estimates of what these costs are expected to be in Australia, both for trough and tower technologies. When an analysis is made of how to improve the efficiency of a CSP plant, there is significant potential to reduce the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) of the plant through operation at higher temperatures. A comparison of tower and trough plants, at various operating temperatures, indicates that tower plants have a greater potential to reduce their LCOE at higher temperatures than troughs. Abstract: The focus of this paper is to investigate the impact of using estimated solar irradiance data in building energy simulations. A series of annual weather files were developed with the estimates from two global and three diffuse/direct irradiance models for three locations in Australia. A weather file was also developed using the modelled values of global, diffuse and direct irradiance as estimated by EnergyPlus'' (Version 7.0.0) auxiliary weather generator program. In addition weather files were generated with measured irradiance data and satellite derived irradiance data from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The influence of irradiance data was tested via the simulation of a simple 15 × 15 × 3.5 m building under two construction scenarios with varying window to wall ratios (WWR). This study indicates that the level of bias and uncertainty in the simulation results was low when global irradiance was measured and only diffuse and direct irradiance were estimated. However, when global irradiance was unknown the level of bias and uncertainty increased significantly and was shown to be highly dependent on the WWR, whilst only the level of bias was shown to be dependent on the building envelope construction. The results also indicated that the Skartveit diffuse/direct irradiance model used in combination with the BOM''s satellite derived global irradiance data set achieved better results than the complete (global and direct) satellite derived irradiance data set from the BOM. The worst correlation in the simulation results occurred for the case where the irradiance data was estimated by EnergyPlus'' auxiliary weather generator program. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Australia has a very sunny climate, with a very high demand for air conditioning. Implementing solar assisted air conditioning is an ideal option to achieve a high solar fraction which leads to a significant amount of energy and greenhouse gas emission savings. Solar assisted air conditioning systems are environmentally friendly by being constructed in a way that minimises the need for chlorofluorocarbons CFC, Hydro chlorofluorocarbons HCFC or Chlorofluorocarbons HFC refrigerants and by using a low grade thermal renewable energy, therefore, making them energy efficient and environmentally safe. They can be used either as stand-alone systems or with conventional AC, to improve the indoor air quality. Solar cooling is a new and a fast growing technology compared to other fields of solar energy applications. On the other hand most of the current solar cooling applications are demonstration projects in nature; the technologies are advancing yet still need a lot of additional design, planning, development, and research efforts. T now solar assisted air conditioning''s main obstacles are the high installation costs, and the lack of knowledge and familiarity with this technology between designers, developers and architects. In this paper a feasibility study is carried out to assess a solar assisted air conditioning system for an office building under three of Queensland''s subtropical climates; Rockhampton, Gladstone, and Emerald. The technical aspects of a proposed solar cooling system are investigated. Cooling load profile for a proposed reference building was obtained using TRNSYS software under the influence of these different climates. An electric vapour compression pump, with 2.5 coefficient of performance (COP) for cooling is used as a reference system to assess the primary energy consumption, assuming 80% of primary energy consumed by the reference conventional system is replaced by solar energy. The results of analysing the proposed system indicated that an 80% of the primary energy savings can be achieved by installing 50 m2 of solar collectors and 1.8 m3of hot water''s storage tank under the three selected climates. Abstract: Wave energy is particularly abundant along the Australian southern coastline. Harvesting wave energy using a converter could provide a sustainable alternative for electricity generation for Australia. In this paper, the performance of three different types of wave energy converter (WEC) has been evaluated spatially for Australian coastal regions using Australian Renewable Energy Atlas wave energy data. It was found one of the WECs operated with a capacity factor greater than 54.3% for a large portion of the Tasmanian western coastline, while being located close to transmission infrastructure. The levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) for the WECs for these regions was in the order of $78/MWh. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Hourly diffuse and direct solar irradiance data are required for weather files used in building energy simulation as well as Photovoltaic and solar thermal calculations. Access to up to date hourly observation data or satellite derived data for these parameters is currently only available for a selection of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology measurement locations. This study aims to investigate the accuracy of the methods used to estimate solar irradiance data from meteorological observations either in the absence of observed irradiance data or when irradiance observations are limited to global irradiance. In particular the focus of this paper is to investigate the accuracy of the process of coupling together global and direct/diffuse models. Five global and four diffuse/direct irradiance models are presented and compared to experimental data for four locations in Australia. In the case where experimental global irradiance data is available, values are used as input into various models to obtain diffuse and direct irradiance. In the absence of experimental irradiance data, the approach taken is to estimate global irradiance with a separate model and then feed these values into the diffuse/direct models. The errors associated with both of these approaches are investigated by comparing the modelled diffuse and direct irradiance values with known experimental data for four Australian locations over a period of a number of years. This study indicates that no single diffuse/direct irradiance model consistently outperformed the other models at estimating diffuse and direct irradiance whilst the Zhang and Huang global irradiance model with coefficients from Seo and Huang achieved the best estimates of global irradiance for the locations investigated. For the approach where global irradiance is estimated from a model, the resulting direct and diffuse data was found to differ significantly from the experimental data. The results indicate that the individual models that achieved the best estimates of global irradiance did not achieve the best estimates of diffuse and direct irradiance when coupled with a diffuse/direct model. Abstract: Given the recent increasing public focus on climate change issues, there is a need for robust, sustainable and climate friendly power transmission and distribution systems that are intelligent, reliable, and green. Current power systems create environmental impacts as well as contributing to global warming due to their utilization of fossil fuels, especially coal, as carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere. In contrast to fossil fuels, renewable energy is starting to be used as the panacea for solving climate change or global warming problems. This paper describes a feasibility study undertaken to investigate the potentialities of renewable energy including the prospective locations in Australia for renewable energy generation, in particular solar and wind energy. Initially, a hybrid model has been developed to investigate the prospects of wind energy for typical Australian region considering production cost, cost of energy, emission production and contribution from renewable energy using the Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER), a computer model developed by the USA’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This model also explores suitable places around Australia for wind energy generation using statistical analysis. Subsequently, the usefulness of solar energy in the Australian context and suitable locations for solar energy generation are also investigated using a similar hybrid model. Finally, the model has been developed to investigate the prospects of renewable energy in particular wind and solar energy including specific locations in Australia that would be suitable for both wind and solar energy generation. From simulation analysis it is clearly observed that Australia has enormous potentialities for substantially increased use of renewable energy; a large penetration of renewable energy sources into the national power system would reduce CO2 emissions significantly, contributing to the reduction of global warming. Abstract: Despite much optimistic language on commercial websites, little data is available on actual performance of hydrokinetic turbines. This paper summarises the findings of a series of tests on several Darrieus type cross flow hydrokinetic turbines (HKTs). Although this type of hydrokinetic turbine (HKT) has some advantages over axial flow turbines, fixed pitch Darrieus HKTs also have some drawbacks, including inability to self-start under load, low efficiency and shaking. Variable pitch has been suggested to increase starting torque and efficiency, ducts to increase power output and helical blades to produce smooth torque. To assess each of these modifications, tests were conducted in Australia and Canada on HKTs with fixed and variable pitch straight blades, fixed helical blades, with and without a slatted diffuser, by mounting each turbine in front of a barge and motoring through still water at speeds ranging from less than 1 m/s up to 5 m/s. The diffuser increased the power output by a factor of 3 in one configuration but considerably less in others. A reason for this finding is suggested. The maximum coefficient of performance Cp of the fixed pitch straight blade and helical turbines without a diffuser ranged from about 0.25 at 1.5 m/s down to less than 0.1 at 5 m/s, while Cp for those with a diffuser ranged from about 0.45 down to about 0.3. Fixed blade turbines, both straight and helical, exhibited low starting torque, while variable pitch turbines started easily. Considerable differences in Cp were observed for the same turbine configuration at different speeds. The turbine with fixed pitch, straight blades was found to shake violently due to cyclical hydrodynamic forces on blades, while the helical and variable pitch turbines did not shake excessively. Abstract: Thirty years ago in Australia, there was a significant research, development and demonstration programme in solar industrial process heating (SIPH). This activity was led principally by the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation, the country’s main scientific research body. Other state government bodies also funded demonstration projects. Today, there is very little SIPH activity at any level in Australia. The contrast with the progress in other renewable energy technologies like wind and solar photovoltaic systems is striking. While the implementation of these technologies has progressed, SIPH has gone backwards. If Australia is to decarbonise its economy at the rate required, a massive deployment of solar thermal technology in those industries which use large quantities of low temperature hot water is also required. Recent developments nationally and internationally may rekindle new applications of solar thermal energy use by industry. This paper reviews the past achievements in SIPH in Australia and describes the lessons learned in order to better prepare for any new wave of SIPH activity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper analyses the evolution of the photovoltaics industry in Australia, Germany and Japan from a comparative policy perspective. It uses a sectoral innovation system framework to discuss the way the three countries have approached the development of knowledge and new technologies, the actors in the sector and the interactions between them, the role of institutions and availability of funding as well as the development of markets for photovoltaics. It outlines the different paths that the countries have adopted for the process of transition from niche to mass production. The findings show that various national players have specialised in different activities, with the institutions'' building block being a key determinant for success or otherwise. In the case of Australia, it is also the least developed area which ultimately exposes the country to losing its innovation benefits. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Over 1 year, private swimming pools in Australia will typically consume 1680GWh of electricity, producing 2130kt of CO2. Redesigning a pool''s filtration system and using it more efficiently can reduce the energy use, and hence the CO2 production, by a significant amount. This paper describes experimental measurements carried out on a new design of pool pump system. Initial experiments using a variable frequency drive (VFD) with a standard, single phase pump/motor system have achieved energy savings of 40%. Utilising a VFD and a three phase pump/motor energy savings of 61% have been achieved, without degrading the system performance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Solarflow was invented at The Environmental Technology Centre, Murdoch University (the Murdoch ETC) in Perth, Western Australia as part of a doctoral thesis in the early 1990s researching suitable water treatment systems for remote indigenous communities. The design has been modified since this time by its original manufacturer but full commercialisation was not achieved. The current owner Solco Pty Ltd was keen to further improve the efficiency and lower the purchase cost of the unit and engaged the Murdoch ETC to undertake further testing. The Solarflow is a self-contained solar-powered unit capable of producing 400L/day of high quality drinking water from brackish water via reverse osmosis and requires only 120W of photovoltaic power. This is achievable due to its innovative energy recovery system. In order to assess the unit''s efficiency more accurately the latest high-rate data logging technology from the ResLab laboratory at Murdoch University was employed. This enabled quantification of the Solarflow''s unique and complex waveforms of the four key parameters: voltage, current, pressure and flow. The results of this testing are presented in this paper. This paper reports on the design and successful field testing of a photovoltaic (PV)-powered desalination system. The system described here is intended for use in remote areas of the Australian outback, where fresh water is extremely limited and it is often necessary to drink high salinity bore water. A hybrid membrane configuration is implemented, whereby an ultrafiltration (UF) module is used for removing particulates, bacteria and viruses, while a reverse osmosis (RO) or nanofiltration (NF) membrane retains the salts. The concepts of water and energy recovery are implemented in the design. Field trials, performed in White Cliffs (New South Wales), demonstrated that clean drinking water was able to be produced from a variety of feed waters, including high salinity (3500 mg/l) bore water and high turbidity (200 NTU) dam water. The specific energy consumption ranged from 2 to 8 kW h/m3 of disinfected and desalinated drinking water, depending on the salinity of the feed water and the system operating conditions. The optimum operating pressure when filtering bore water was determined to be in the range 6–7 bar. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
