Conventionally, two AC side current sensors are needed in vector control of grid side converter for AC-DC bidirectional power conversion. The present paper proposes a technique where the control can be achieved with the use of only one AC side current sensor. The control principle utilises the information of un-sensed second current sensor for its estimation, which is embedded and readily available in conventional control technique itself. In the proposed method, the grid side d- q axis reference currents of the current controllers are used for estimation of β-axis component of grid current, while the α-axis component of grid current is calculated by one AC side current sensor. Effect of voltage unbalance on the control is also studied in this paper. The proposed control is validated with detailed simulation and experimental observations for both steady-state and transient conditions. The proposed control gives satisfactory performance. There has been a tremendous growth in the field of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in recent years, which is reflected in various applications. As the use of WSN applications increases, providing security to WSNs becomes a leading issue. This is complex due to the unique features of WSNs. This paper proposes a trust-based intrusion detection that uses multi-attribute trust metrics to improve detection accuracy. It uses an enhanced distributive trust calculation algorithm that involves monitoring neighbouring nodes and trust calculation using the trust metrics message success rate (MSR), elapsed time at node (ETN), correctness (CS) and fairness (FS). In addition to the normal communication-based trust property MSR, this paper uses effective parameters like ETN, which focuses on data and address modification attacks in an effective manner, and two social-interaction-based parameters CS and FS, which address trust-related attacks effectively. In this paper a new design is proposed in microstrip antenna family. In this paper, a review design of microstrip antenna design using particle swarm optimization (PSO) and advanced particle swarm optimization (APSO) has been presented which optimizes the parameters and both results are compared. This technique helps antenna engineers to design, analyze, and simulate antenna efficiently and effectively. An advanced PSO driven antenna has been developed to calculate resonant frequency of slit-cut stacked equilateral triangular microstrip antenna. In this paper, we consider the fully fuzzy unbalanced transportation problem in which the total availability/production is more than the total demand and propose a method to solve it. Such problems are usually solved by adding a dummy destination. Since the dummy destination has no existence in reality, the excess availability is not transported at all and is held back at one or more origins. The method proposed in this paper gives the additional information that to which of the destination(s) the excess availability be transported for future demand at minimum cost. The advantage of the proposed method over the existing method is that the fuzzy optimal solution obtained does not involve the dummy destination. Distillation is one of the most widely used separation unit operations in process industries, although it is quite energy intensive. In many cases, the enormous energy requirements for distillation make it economically infeasible to carry out the separation. Thermally coupled distillation system (TCDS) is an advanced distillation method that provides significant energy savings of about 30% as compared with conventional distillation column sequences. The most well-known TCDS sequence, the Petlyuk configuration, has some operational challenges due to bidirectional vapour flow, which makes its implementation difficult in two-column mode. To overcome these limitations, a number of unidirectional vapour flow configurations have been proposed in the literature. The work on simulation analysis for such configurations is limited. In this paper, simulation models for two such configurations are developed, analyzed and compared with the Petlyuk and conventional distillation column sequences for separation of equimolar mixture of benzene-toluene-ethylbenzene. Latent heat storage in a phase change material (PCM) is very attractive because of its high-energy storage density and its isothermal behaviour during the phase change process. Low thermal conductivity of the walls and roof reduces the heat gain at a steady state condition. Chloride hexahydrate (CaCl6HO) as a phase change material (PCM) for a room was proposed in this paper to control the indoor air temperature for a better thermal comfort for human beings. Building concrete roof with vertical cylindrical hole of 0.5 × 0.5 m and array of 3 × 3 filled with phase change material (PCM) was considered for analysis. A detailed thermal analysis was carried by both simulation and experimental study. Results showed that this type of PCM room can decrease the indoor air temperature fluctuation by a maximum of 4°C. The complexity of electromechanical coupling drive system (ECDS)s, specifically electrical drive systems, makes studying them in their entirety challenging since they consist of elements of diverse nature, i.e. electric, electronics and mechanics. This presents a real struggle to the engineers who want to design and implement such systems with high performance, efficiency and reliability. For this purpose, engineers need a tool capable of modelling and/or simulating components of diverse nature within the ECDS. However, a majority of the available tools are limited in their capacity to describe the characteristics of such components sufficiently. To overcome this difficulty, this paper first proposes an improved methodology of modelling and simulation for ECDS. The approach is based on using domain-based simulators individually, namely electric and mechanic part simulators and also integrating them with a co-simulation. As for the modelling of the drive machine, a finely tuned dynamic model is developed by taking the saturation effect into account. In order to validate the developed model as well as the proposed methodology, an industrial ECDS is tested experimentally. This paper discusses dynamic modeling of non-isolated DC-DC converters (buck, boost and buck-boost) under continuous and discontinuous modes of operation. Three types of models are presented for each converter, namely, switching model, average model and harmonic model. These models include significant nonidealities of the converters. The switching model gives the instantaneous currents and voltages of the converter. The average model provides the ripple-free currents and voltages, averaged over a switching cycle. The harmonic model gives the peak to peak values of ripple in currents and voltages. The validity of all these models is established by comparing the simulation results with the experimental results from laboratory prototypes, at different steady state and transient conditions. Simulation based on a combination of average and harmonic models is shown to provide all relevant information as obtained from the switching model, while consuming less computation time than the latter. The paper describes a procedure for the uncertainty quantification (UQ) using evidence theory in buckling analysis of semi-rigid jointed frame structures under mixed epistemic-aleatory uncertainty. The design uncertainties (geometrical, material, strength, and manufacturing) are often prevalent in engineering applications. Due to lack of knowledge or incomplete, inaccurate, unclear information in the modeling, simulation, measurement, and design, there are limitations in using only one framework (probability theory) to quantify uncertainty in a system because of the impreciseness of data or knowledge. Evidence theory provides an alternative to probability theory for the representation of epistemic uncertainty that derives from a lack of knowledge with respect to the appropriate values to use for various inputs to the model. Unfortunately, propagation of an evidence theory representation for uncertainty through a model is more computationally demanding than propagation of a probabilistic representation for uncertainty. In order to alleviate the computational difficulties in the evidence theory based UQ analysis, a differential evolution-based computational strategy for propagation of epistemic uncertainty in a system with evidence theory is presented here. Fast Decoupled Load Flow (FDLF) is a very popular and widely used power flow analysis method because of its simplicity and efficiency. Even though the basic FDLF algorithm is well investigated, the same is not true in the case of additional schemes/modifications required to obtain adjusted load flow solutions using the FDLF method. Handling generator Q limits is one such important feature needed in any practical load flow method. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of two classes of schemes intended to handle this aspect i.e. the bus type switching scheme and the sensitivity scheme. We propose two new sensitivity based schemes and assess their performance in comparison with the existing schemes. In addition, a new scheme to avoid the possibility of anomalous solutions encountered while using the conventional schemes is also proposed and evaluated. Results from extensive simulation studies are provided to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of these existing and proposed schemes, especially from the point of view of reliability. A Waveform Relaxation (WR) based iterative real-time playback scheme for controller testing was recently proposed in the literature along with proof-of-concept simulations. This scheme can be a low-cost alternative to Hardware-in-Loop simulation, as it does not require a real-time simulator. To demonstrate practical feasibility of the WR scheme, this paper presents results of experiments with real-time implementation of controllers, iteratively interacting with simulated models of power apparatus via storage and real-time play-back. Two systems are considered: a HVDC controller tested with a detailed model of the converters, and a TCSC based damping controller tested with a low frequency model of a power system. The results are validated with those obtained using simulated models of the controllers. We also present results of an experiment in which the tested HVDC controller is used to control the scaled real-life HVDC apparatus, for which a simulated model was used during controller testing. Convergence and a good match between simulated and real-time implementation are obtained for the HVDC system. This paper presents the results of laboratory model tests and corresponding numerical analyses carried out on a model slope representing an actual railway embankment which failed on several occasions after overnight heavy rainfall. In the absence of any field data, the displacement behaviour and failure pattern of the model embankment slope are observed in the laboratory under fully saturated condition and under a static load at the crest simulating the actual rail loads. A study is also performed by reinforcing the slope with thin jute tassels of 1 mm diameter. The numerical simulation of the model tests is performed by a commercial program called FLAC. The responses of the model slope with and without jute tassels are observed in fully saturated condition. Significant improvement in deformation of the slope is observed both in the case of numerical analyses and laboratory experiments when jute tassels are utilized as a slope protection measure. The study indicates that the stability of the railway embankment can be improved significantly at low cost by reinforcing it with jute tassels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we have studied the behaviour of reactive solute transport through stratified porous medium under the influence of multi-process non-equilibrium transport model. Various experiments were carried out in the laboratory and the experimental breakthrough curves were observed at spatially placed sampling points for stratified porous medium. Batch sorption studies were also performed to estimate the sorption parameters of the material used in stratified aquifer system. The effects of distance dependent dispersion and tailing are visible in the experimental breakthrough curves. The presence of physical and chemical non-equilibrium are observed from the pattern of breakthrough curves. Multi-process non-equilibrium model represents the combined effect of physical and chemical non-ideality in the stratified aquifer system. The results show that the incorporation of distance dependent dispersivity in multi-process non-equilibrium model provides best fit of observed data through stratified porous media. Also, the exponential distance dependent dispersivity is more suitable for large distances and at small distances, linear or constant dispersivity function can be considered for simulating reactive solute in stratified porous medium. Multi-machine, single-inverter induction motor drives are attractive in situations in which all machines are of similar ratings, and operate at approximately the same load torques. The advantages include small size compared to multi-inverter system, lower weight and overall cost. However, field oriented control of such drives is a challenge since no two motors will have exactly the same operating conditions at any time. In general, at least some motors in the system will operate away from perfect field orientation. It is therefore important to analyse their torque dynamics carefully. This paper discusses existing multi-machine field-oriented control methods, and analyses and compares them from the viewpoint of dynamic performance. For this, an analytical framework based on small-signal analysis is developed to compare multi-machine control methods. This analysis is verified by simulations and experiments. Seismic signals due to any underground nuclear explosion events are known to be influenced by the local geology of the test site and the yield level. In this paper, transient three-dimensional finite element code SHOCK-3D developed for the simulation of underground nuclear explosion events has been used to obtain synthetic acceleration signals for Baneberry site (Nevada) single and composite rock media. At this site an underground nuclear test of 10 kT conducted on 18th December 1970 at source depth of 278 m resulted into venting as reported by Terhune et al with 2D simulation results and later by us through 3D simulation in Ranjan et al. First, the reasons of the venting for this event are summarized. After the successful validation of the 3D numerical model for Baneberry site rock media, parametric studies are carried out for 1 and 8 kT yields at 100 m depth (Scaled Depths of Burst SDOB ∼ 100 and 50 m/kT, respectively) for homogeneous and composite Paleozoic and Tuff media of Baneberry site. It is demonstrated that the near source local geological formations and associated nonlinear effects significantly influence the seismic signals. With this study the seismic decoupling of the source by an order of magnitude has been illustrated. Finally, it is concluded that the seismic signals alone, in the absence of in-depth information of the local geology of the specific test site, are not appropriate measures of the source strength. This paper proposes a new slip factor based three-dimensional thermal model to predict the temperature distribution during friction stir welding of 304L stainless steel plates. The proposed model employs temperature and radius dependent heat source to study the thermal cycle, temperature distribution, power required, the effect of process parameters on heat generation per mm length of the weld and peak temperature during the friction stir welding process. Simulations of friction stir welding process were carried out on 304L stainless steel workpieces for various rotational and welding speeds. The predicted thermal cycle, power required and temperature distributions were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The heat generation per mm length of weld and peak temperature were found to be directly proportional to rotational speed and inversely proportional to welding speed. The rate of increase in heat generation per mm length of the weld and peak temperature are found to be higher at lower rotational speeds and lower at higher rotational speed. The heat generation during friction stir welding was found to be 80.8 % at shoulder, 16.1 % at pin side and 3.1 % at the bottom of the pin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Economic load dispatch is one of the vital purposes in electrical power system operation, management and planning. Economic dispatch problem is one of the most important problems in electric power system operation. In large scale system, the problem is more complex and difficult to find out optimal solution because it is nonlinear function and it contains number of local optimal. Combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) problem is to schedule the committed generating units outputs to meet the required load demand at minimum operating cost with minimum emission simultaneously. The main aim of economic load dispatch is to reduce the total production cost of the generating system and at the same time the necessary equality and inequality constraints should also be fulfilled. This leads to the development of CEED techniques. There are various techniques proposed by several researchers to solve CEED problem based on optimization techniques. But still some problems such as slower convergence and higher computational complexity exist in using the optimization techniques such as GA for solving CEED problem. This paper proposes an efficient and reliable technique for combined fuel cost economic optimization and emission dispatch using the Modified Ant Colony Optimization algorithm (MACO) to produce better optimal solution. Before installation, a voltage source converter is usually subjected to heat-run test to verify its thermal design and performance under load. For heat-run test, the converter needs to be operated at rated voltage and rated current for a substantial length of time. Hence, such tests consume huge amount of energy in case of high-power converters. Also, the capacities of the source and loads available in the research and development (R&D) centre or the production facility could be inadequate to conduct such tests. This paper proposes a method to conduct heat-run tests on high-power, pulse width modulated (PWM) converters with low energy consumption. The experimental set-up consists of the converter under test and another converter (of similar or higher rating), both connected in parallel on the ac side and open on the dc side. Vector-control or synchronous reference frame control is employed to control the converters such that one draws certain amount of reactive power and the other supplies the same; only the system losses are drawn from the mains. The performance of the controller is validated through simulation and experiments. Remediation of the groundwater contamination problem is a tedious, time consuming and expensive process. Pump and treat (PAT) is one of the commonly used techniques for groundwater remediation in which the contaminated groundwater is pumped, treated and put back to the aquifer system or other sources. Developing simulation-optimization (S/O) model proved to be very useful in the design process of an effective PAT system. Simulation models help in predicting the spatial and temporal variation of the contamination plume while optimization models help in minimizing the cost of pumping. Generally, grid or mesh based models such as Finite Difference Method (FDM) or Finite Element Methods (FEM) is used for the groundwater flow and transport simulation. But it is found that grid/mesh generation is a time consuming process. Therefore, recently Meshfree (MFree) based numerical models are developed to avoid this difficulty of meshing and remeshing. MFree Point Collocation Method (PCM) is a simple meshfree method used for the simulation of coupled groundwater flow and contaminant transport. For groundwater optimization problems, even though number of methods such as linear programming, nonlinear programming, etc. are available, evolutionary algorithm based techniques such as genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are found to be very effective. In this paper, a simulation model using MFree PCM for confined groundwater flow and transport and a PSO based single objective optimization model are developed and coupled to get an effective S/O model for groundwater remediation using PAT. The S/O model based on PCM and PSO is applied for a polluted hypothetical confined aquifer and its performance is compared with Finite Element Method-Binary Coded Genetic Algorithm (FEM-GA) model. It is found that both the models are in good agreement with each other showing the applicability of the present approach. The aim of this paper is to develop a simulation model of large deformation problems following a semi-analytical method, incorporating the complications of geometric and material non-linearity in the formulation. The solution algorithm is based on the method of energy principle in structural mechanics, as applicable for conservative systems. A one-dimensional solid circular bar problem has been solved in post-elastic range assuming linear elastic, linear strain hardening material behaviour. Type of loading includes uniform uniaxial loading and gravity loading due to body force, whereas the geometry of the bar is considered to be non-uniformly taper. Results are validated successfully with benchmark solution and some new results have also been reported. The location of initiation of elasto-plastic front and its growth are found to be functions of geometry of the bar and loading conditions. Some indicative results have been presented for static and dynamic problems and the solution methodology developed for one-dimension has been extended to the elasto-plastic analysis of two-dimensional strain field problems of a rotating disk. In this paper, we examine the performance of PID (proportional integral derivative) and fuzzy controllers on the angular velocity of a hydrostatic transmission system by means of Matlab-Simulink. A very novel aspect is that it includes the analysis of the effect of bulk modulus on system control. Simulation results demonstrates that bulk modulus should be considered as a variable parameter to obtain a more realistic model. Additionally, a PID controller is insufficient in presence of variable bulk modulus, whereas a fuzzy controller provides robust angular velocity control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes an active filter topology to improve the performance of hysteresis direct torque control (HDTC) of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). The filter topology consists of an active filter and two RLC filters, and is connected to the main power circuit through a 1:1 transformer. The active filter is characterized by detecting the harmonics in the motor phase voltages and injecting equivalent harmonic voltages to produce almost sinusoidal voltage waveform to the motor terminals. The active filter uses hysteresis voltage controller while the motor main circuit uses hysteresis direct torque control. The simulation results of this combined control structure show considerable torque ripple reduction in the steady state range and adequate dynamic torque performance as well as considerable harmonic voltage and EMI noise reduction. This paper investigates the effect of different inputs on selected performance metrics such as cycle time, WIP level and throughput in the processes of semiconductor wafer fab by developing a simulation model of representative but fictitious semiconductor wafer fab. The different inputs include arrival rate, arrival distribution, processing time, maintenance schedule, operator schedule, batch size, dispatching rule and release policy. Simulation results show that the relationship between inputs and system performance metrics, considered in this study, are extremely complex particularly for the inputs maintenance schedule, operator schedule and batch size. An overall result shows that dispatching rule and closed loop release policy can significamtly improve the performance of wafer fabrication system. However; major improvement comes from closed loop release policy. Accordingly, this paper presents a new closed loop release policy called as constant batch machine workload (CONSTBWL) to improve the performance of wafer fab. The behaviour of CONSTBWL is analysed in combination with dispatching rules using the proposed simulation model for wafer fab. Simulation results show that CONSTBWL policy outperformed traditional release policies in terms of the average cycle time, the work in process (WIP) level and the standard deviation of WIP level under a prescribed throughput level. Furthermore, the analysis of the results indicated that a good shop floor performance can be achieved with a right combination of closed loop release policy and simple dispatching rules with respect to the choice of performance metrics. In this paper, an improved deep echo state network is proposed, named as multiple activation functions deep echo state network (MAF-DESN), where states are activated by multiple activation functions. A sufficient condition for MAF-DESN is given to guarantee that MAF-DESN possesses the echo state property. Finally, the MAF-DESN is applied to chaotic time-series predictions and compared to other ESN deformation models and popular LSTM. Simulation results show that under same network size condition, MAF-DESN possesses stronger explanatory power in chaotic far-infrared laser predictions (R-square=0.9537, others≤0.6487), and better fitting ability in daily foreign exchange rates (MAE=0.0040, others≥0.0047) and chaotic far-infrared laser (MAE=3.4042, others≥4.9021). In high-dimension-input task, MAF-DESN improved the performance when the results were compared (R-square=0.4274, others≤0.3975 and MAE=5.2221, others≥7.6876), while the train time of MAF-DESN did not increase when compared to DESN. The Flight Path Reconstruction (FPR) techniques are performed to verify the data compatibility check and post-flight. This is often achieved by calibrating the onboard sensors such as inertial and airdata sensors. In this paper, the limitations of FPR techniques in terms of Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) and Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) have been reported. To demonstrate the FPR and sensor calibration, kinematic trajectory simulations with wind box type maneuvers have been performed.
