Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many works have been published proposing solutions to the problems that arose in this scenario. In this vein, one of the topics that attracted the most attention is the development of computer-based strategies to detect COVID-19 from thoracic medical imaging, such as chest X-ray (CXR) and computerized tomography scan (CT scan). By searching for works already published on this theme, we can easily find thousands of them. This is partly explained by the fact that the most severe worldwide pandemic emerged amid the technological advances recently achieved, and also considering the technical facilities to deal with the large amount of data produced in this context. Even though several of these works describe important advances, we cannot overlook the fact that others only use well-known methods and techniques without a more relevant and critical contribution. Hence, differentiating the works with the most relevant contributions is not a trivial task. The number of citations obtained by a paper is probably the most straightforward and intuitive way to verify its impact on the research community. Aiming to help researchers in this scenario, we present a review of the top-100 most cited papers in this field of investigation according to the Google Scholar search engine. We evaluate the distribution of the top-100 papers taking into account some important aspects, such as the type of medical imaging explored, learning settings, segmentation strategy, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), and finally, the dataset and code availability. This paper reports a rapid and sensitive sensor for the detection and quantification of the COVID-19 N-protein (N-PROT) via an electrochemical mechanism. Single-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used as a transduction method for real-time measurement of the N-PROT in an immunosensor system based on gold-conjugate-modified carbon screen-printed electrodes (Cov-Ag-SPE). The system presents high selectivity attained through an optimal stimulation signal composed of a 0.0 V DC potential and 10 mV RMS−1 AC signal at 100 Hz over 300 s. The Cov-Ag-SPE showed a log response toward N-PROT detection at concentrations from 1.0 ng mL−1 to 10.0 μg mL−1, with a 0.977 correlation coefficient for the phase (θ) variation. An ML-based approach could be created using some aspects observed from the positive and negative samples; hence, it was possible to classify 252 samples, reaching 83.0, 96.2 and 91.3% sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, respectively, with confidence intervals (CI) ranging from 73.0 to 100.0%. Because impedance spectroscopy measurements can be performed with low-cost portable instruments, the immunosensor proposed here can be applied in point-of-care diagnostics for mass testing, even in places with limited resources, as an alternative to the common diagnostics methods. Measuring the colorimetric signals produced by the biospecific accumulation of colorimetric probes and recording the results is a key feature for next-generation paper-based rapid tests. Manual processing of these tests is time-consuming and prone to a loss of accuracy when interpreting faint and patchy signals. Proprietary, closed-source readers and software companies offering automated smartphone-based assay readings have both been criticized for interoperability issues. Here, we introduce a minimal reader prototype composed of open-source hardware and open-source software that has the benefits of automatic assay quantification while avoiding the interoperability issues associated with closed-source readers. An image-processing algorithm was developed to automate the selection of an optimal region of interest and measure the average pixel intensity. When used to quantify signals produced by lateral flow immunoassays for detecting antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, results obtained with the proposed algorithm were comparable to those obtained with a manual method but with the advantage of improving the precision and accuracy when quantifying small spots or faint and patchy signals. COVID-19 analysis from medical imaging is an important task that has been intensively studied in the last years due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, medical imaging has often been used as a complementary or main tool to recognize the infected persons. On the other hand, medical imaging has the ability to provide more details about COVID-19 infection, including its severity and spread, which makes it possible to evaluate the infection and follow-up the patient's state. CT scans are the most informative tool for COVID-19 infection, where the evaluation of COVID-19 infection is usually performed through infection segmentation. However, segmentation is a tedious task that requires much effort and time from expert radiologists. To deal with this limitation, an efficient framework for estimating COVID-19 infection as a regression task is proposed. The goal of the Per-COVID-19 challenge is to test the efficiency of modern deep learning methods on COVID-19 infection percentage estimation (CIPE) from CT scans. Participants had to develop an efficient deep learning approach that can learn from noisy data. In addition, participants had to cope with many challenges, including those related to COVID-19 infection complexity and crossdataset scenarios. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has severely affected people's lives worldwide in an unexpected manner. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), several viral epidemics continue to occur and pose a significant public health problem. Until May 2023, there have been 676 million cases of COVID-19 infections and over 6.8 million deaths, globally. This paper surveys the role and effectiveness of advanced fifth-generation (5G)/beyond 5G (B5G)/sixth-generation (6G) technologies, combined with mobile applications (apps) and the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), in detecting, managing, and mitigating the spread of COVID-19 and designing smart healthcare infrastructures for future pandemics. Analyzing and summarizing the research of relevant scholars based on the impact of 5G/B5G/6G and other technologies on COVID-19. The study tabulates the technical characteristics and effectiveness of different technologies in the context of COVID-19, summarizing the research of previous scholars. Challenges and design issues in the implementation of advanced information and telecommunication systems were demonstrated. Deep-learning-based image inpainting methods have made remarkable advancements, particularly in object removal tasks. The removal of face masks has gained significant attention, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and while numerous methods have successfully addressed the removal of small objects, removing large and complex masks from faces remains demanding. This paper presents a novel two-stage network for unmasking faces considering the intricate facial features typically concealed by masks, such as noses, mouths, and chins. Additionally, the scarcity of paired datasets comprising masked and unmasked face images poses an additional challenge. In the first stage of our proposed model, we employ an autoencoder-based network for binary segmentation of the face mask. Subsequently, in the second stage, we introduce a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based network enhanced with attention and Masked–Unmasked Region Fusion (MURF) mechanisms to focus on the masked region. Our network generates realistic and accurate unmasked faces that resemble the original faces. We train our model on paired unmasked and masked face images sourced from CelebA, a large public dataset, and evaluate its performance on multi-scale masked faces. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed method surpasses the current state-of-the-art techniques in both qualitative and quantitative metrics. It achieves a Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) improvement of 4.18 dB over the second-best method, with the PSNR reaching 30.96. A systematic review on the topic of automatic detection of COVID-19 using audio signals was performed. A total of 48 papers were obtained after screening 659 records identified in the PubMed, IEEE Xplore, Embase, and Google Scholar databases. The reviewed studies employ a mixture of open-access and self-collected datasets. Because COVID-19 has only recently been investigated, there is a limited amount of available data. Most of the data are crowdsourced, which motivated a detailed study of the various pre-processing techniques used by the reviewed studies. Although 13 of the 48 identified papers show promising results, several have been performed with small-scale datasets (<200). Among those papers, convolutional neural networks and support vector machine algorithms were the best-performing methods. The analysis of the extracted features showed that Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients and zero-crossing rate continue to be the most popular choices. Less common alternatives, such as non-linear features, have also been proven to be effective. The reported values for sensitivity range from 65.0% to 99.8% and those for accuracy from 59.0% to 99.8%. The importance of the IoT is increasing in every field of life, and it especially has a significant role in improving the efficiency of the healthcare system. Its demand further increased during COVID-19 to facilitate the patient remotely from their home digitally. Every time the COVID-19 patient visited the doctor for minor complications, it increased the risk of spreading the virus and the cost for the patient. Another alarming situation arose when a patient was in a critical position and may not claim an emergency service from the nearby healthcare system, increasing the death rate. The IoT uses healthcare services to properly monitor COVID-19 patients by using the interconnected network to overcome these issues. Through the IoT, the patient is facilitated by the health care system without spreading the virus, decreasing the death ratio during COVID-19. This paper aims to discuss different applications, technologies, and challenges of the IoT healthcare system, related to COVID-19. Different databases were searched using keywords in PubMed, ResearchGate, Scopus, ACM, Springer, Elsevier, Google Scholar, etc. This paper is trying to discuss, identify, and highlight the useful applications of the IoT healthcare system to provide guidelines to the researchers, healthcare institutions, and scientists to overcomes the hazards of COVID-19 pandemics. Hence, IoT is beneficial by identifying the symptoms of COVID-19 patients and by providing better treatments that use the healthcare system efficiently. At the end of the paper, challenges and future work are discussed, along with useful suggestions through which scientists can benefit from the IoT healthcare system during COVID-19 and in a severe pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a sharp increase in the interest in artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool supporting the work of doctors in difficult conditions and providing early detection of the implications of the disease. Recent studies have shown that AI has been successfully applied in the healthcare sector. The objective of this paper is to perform a systematic review to summarize the electroencephalogram (EEG) findings in patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and databases and tools used in artificial intelligence algorithms, supporting the diagnosis and correlation between lung disease and brain damage, and lung damage. Available search tools containing scientific publications, such as PubMed and Google Scholar, were comprehensively evaluated and searched with open databases and tools used in AI algorithms. This work aimed to collect papers from the period of January 2019–May 2022 including in their resources the database from which data necessary for further development of algorithms supporting the diagnosis of the respiratory system can be downloaded and the correlation between lung disease and brain damage can be evaluated. The 10 articles which show the most interesting AI algorithms, trained by using open databases and associated with lung diseases, were included for review with 12 articles related to EEGs, which have/or may be related with lung diseases. The Internet of Things (IoT) is an innovative technology with billions of sensors in various IoT applications. Important elements used in the IoT are sensors that collect data for desired analyses. The healthcare system uses the IoT to meet global health challenges, and the newest example is COVID-19. Demand has increased during COVID-19 for healthcare to reach patients remotely and digitally at their homes. The IoT properly monitors patients using an interconnected network to overcome the issues of healthcare services. The aim of this paper is to discuss different applications, technologies, and challenges related to the healthcare system. Different databases were searched using keywords in Google Scholar, Elsevier, PubMed, ACM, ResearchGate, Scopus, Springer, etc. This paper discusses, highlights, and identifies the applications of IoT healthcare systems to provide research directions to healthcare, academia, and researchers to overcome healthcare system challenges. Hence, the IoT can be beneficial by providing better treatments using the healthcare system efficiently. In this paper, the integration of the IoT with smart technologies not only improves computation, but will also allow the IoT to be pervasive, profitable, and available anytime and anywhere. A new pandemic was declared at the end of 2019 because of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). One of the effects of COVID-19 infection is anosmia (i.e., a loss of smell). Unfortunately, this olfactory dysfunction is persistent in around 5% of the world's population, and there is not an effective treatment for it yet. The aim of this paper is to describe a potential non-invasive neurostimulation strategy for treating persistent anosmia in post-COVID-19 patients. In order to design the neurostimulation strategy, 25 subjects who experienced anosmia due to COVID-19 infection underwent an olfactory assessment while their electroencephalographic (EEG) signals were recorded. These signals were used to investigate the activation of brain regions during the olfactory process and identify which regions would be suitable for neurostimulation. Afterwards, 15 subjects participated in the evaluation of the neurostimulation strategy, which was based on applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in selected brain regions related to olfactory function. The results showed that subjects with lower scores in the olfactory assessment obtained greater improvement than the other subjects. Background: In our current digital world, smartphones are no longer limited to communication but are used in various real-world applications. In the healthcare industry, smartphones have sensors that can record data about our daily activities. Such data can be used for many healthcare purposes, such as elderly healthcare services, early disease diagnoses, and archiving patient data for further use. However, the data collected from the various sensors involve high dimensional features, which are not equally helpful in human activity recognition (HAR). Methods: This paper proposes an algorithm for selecting the most relevant subset of features that will contribute efficiently to the HAR process. The proposed method is based on a hybrid version of the recent Coronavirus Disease Optimization Algorithm (COVIDOA) with Simulated Annealing (SA). SA algorithm is merged with COVIDOA to improve its performance and help escape the local optima problem. Results: The UCI-HAR dataset from the UCI machine learning repository assesses the proposed algorithm's performance. A comparison is conducted with seven well-known feature selection algorithms, including the Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA), Gray Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), Reptile Search Algorithm (RSA), Zebra Optimization Algorithm (ZOA), Gradient-Based Optimizer (GBO), Seagull Optimization Algorithm (SOA), and Coyote Optimization Algorithm (COA) regarding fitness, STD, accuracy, size of selected subset, and processing time. Conclusions: The results proved that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art HAR techniques, achieving an average performance of 97.82% in accuracy and a reduction ratio in feature selection of 52.7%. The Internet of Things (IoT) plays a fundamental role in monitoring applications; however, existing approaches relying on cloud and edge-based IoT data analysis encounter issues such as network delays and high costs, which can adversely impact time-sensitive applications. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an IoT framework called Sazgar IoT. Unlike existing solutions, Sazgar IoT leverages only IoT devices and IoT data analysis approximation techniques to meet the time-bounds of time-sensitive IoT applications. In this framework, the computing resources onboard the IoT devices are utilised to process the data analysis tasks of each time-sensitive IoT application. This eliminates the network delays associated with transferring large volumes of high-velocity IoT data to cloud or edge computers. To ensure that each task meets its application-specific time-bound and accuracy requirements, we employ approximation techniques for the data analysis tasks of time-sensitive IoT applications. These techniques take into account the available computing resources and optimise the processing accordingly. To evaluate the effectiveness of Sazgar IoT, experimental validation has been conducted. The results demonstrate that the framework successfully meets the time-bound and accuracy requirements of the COVID-19 citizen compliance monitoring application by effectively utilising the available IoT devices. The experimental validation further confirms that Sazgar IoT is an efficient and scalable solution for IoT data processing, addressing existing network delay issues for time-sensitive applications and significantly reducing the cost related to cloud and edge computing devices procurement, deployment, and maintenance. Dust or condensed water present in harsh outdoor or high-humidity human breath samples are one of the key sources that cause false detection in Micro Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) gas sensors. This paper proposes a novel packaging mechanism for MEMS gas sensors that utilizes a self-anchoring mechanism to embed a hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filter into the upper cover of the gas sensor packaging. This approach is distinct from the current method of external pasting. The proposed packaging mechanism is successfully demonstrated in this study. The test results indicate that the innovative packaging with the PTFE filter reduced the average response value of the sensor to the humidity range of 75~95% RH by 60.6% compared to the packaging without the PTFE filter. Additionally, the packaging passed the High-Accelerated Temperature and Humidity Stress (HAST) reliability test. With a similar sensing mechanism, the proposed packaging embedded with a PTFE filter can be further employed for the application of exhalation-related, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), breath screening. COVID-19 evolution imposes significant challenges for the European healthcare system. The heterogeneous spread of the pandemic within EU regions elicited a wide range of policies, such as school closure, transport restrictions, etc. However, the implementation of these interventions is not accompanied by the implementation of quantitative methods, which would indicate their effectiveness. As a result, the efficacy of such policies on reducing the spread of the virus varies significantly. This paper investigates the effectiveness of using deep learning paradigms to accurately model the spread of COVID-19. The deep learning approaches proposed in this paper are able to effectively map the temporal evolution of a COVID-19 outbreak, while simultaneously taking into account policy interventions directly into the modelling process. Thus, our approach facilitates data-driven decision making by utilizing previous knowledge to train models that predict not only the spread of COVID-19, but also the effect of specific policy measures on minimizing this spread. Global models at the EU level are proposed, which can be successfully applied at the national level. These models use various inputs in order to successfully model the spatio-temporal variability of the phenomenon and obtain generalization abilities. The use of face masks has increased dramatically since the COVID-19 pandemic started in order to to curb the spread of the disease. Additionally, breakthrough infections caused by the Delta and Omicron variants have further increased the importance of wearing a face mask, even for vaccinated individuals. However, the use of face masks also induces attenuation in speech signals, and this change may impact speech processing technologies, e.g., automated speaker verification (ASV) and speech to text conversion. In this paper we examine Automatic Speaker Verification (ASV) systems against the speech samples in the presence of three different types of face mask: surgical, cloth, and filtered N95, and analyze the impact on acoustics and other factors. In addition, we explore the effect of different microphones, and distance from the microphone, and the impact of face masks when speakers use ASV systems in real-world scenarios. Our analysis shows a significant deterioration in performance when an ASV system encounters different face masks, microphones, and variable distance between the subject and microphone. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel framework to overcome performance degradation in these scenarios by realigning the ASV system. The novelty of the proposed ASV framework is as follows: first, we propose a fused feature descriptor by concatenating the novel Ternary Deviated overlapping Patterns (TDoP), Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), and Gammatone Cepstral Coefficients (GTCC), which are used by both the ensemble learning-based ASV and anomaly detection system in the proposed ASV architecture. Second, this paper proposes an anomaly detection model for identifying vocal samples produced in the presence of face masks. Next, it presents a Peak Norm (PN) filter to approximate the signal of the speaker without a face mask in order to boost the accuracy of ASV systems. Finally, the features of filtered samples utilizing the PN filter and samples without face masks are passed to the proposed ASV to test for improved accuracy. The proposed ASV system achieved an accuracy of 0.99 and 0.92, respectively, on samples recorded without a face mask and with different face masks. Although the use of face masks affects the ASV system, the PN filtering solution overcomes this deficiency up to 4%. Similarly, when exposed to different microphones and distances, the PN approach enhanced system accuracy by up to 7% and 9%, respectively. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) across the globe, impacting effective diagnosis and treatment for any chronic illnesses and long-term health implications. In this worldwide crisis, the pandemic shows its daily extension (i.e., active cases) and genome variants (i.e., Alpha) within the virus class and diversifies the association with treatment outcomes and drug resistance. As a consequence, healthcare-related data including instances of sore throat, fever, fatigue, cough, and shortness of breath are given due consideration to assess the conditional state of patients. To gain unique insights, wearable sensors can be implanted in a patient's body that periodically generates an analysis report of the vital organs to a medical center. However, it is still challenging to analyze risks and predict their related countermeasures. Therefore, this paper presents an intelligent Edge-IoT framework (IE-IoT) to detect potential threats (i.e., behavioral and environmental) in the early stage of the disease. The prime objective of this framework is to apply a new pre-trained deep learning model enabled by self-supervised transfer learning to build an ensemble-based hybrid learning model and to offer an effective analysis of prediction accuracy. To construct proper clinical symptoms, treatment, and diagnosis, an effective analysis such as STL observes the impact of the learning models such as ANN, CNN, and RNN. The experimental analysis proves that the ANN model considers the most effective features and attains a better accuracy ( ~ 98.3 % ) than other learning models. Also, the proposed IE-IoT can utilize the communication technologies of IoT such as BLE, Zigbee, and 6LoWPAN to examine the factor of power consumption. Above all, the real-time analysis reveals that the proposed IE-IoT with 6LoWPAN consumes less power and response time than the other state-of-the-art approaches to infer the suspected victims at an early stage of development of the disease. The established efficacy of electronic volatile organic compound (VOC) detection technologies as diagnostic tools for noninvasive early detection of COVID-19 and related coronaviruses has been demonstrated from multiple studies using a variety of experimental and commercial electronic devices capable of detecting precise mixtures of VOC emissions in human breath. The activities of numerous global research teams, developing novel electronic-nose (e-nose) devices and diagnostic methods, have generated empirical laboratory and clinical trial test results based on the detection of different types of host VOC-biomarker metabolites from specific chemical classes. COVID-19-specific volatile biomarkers are derived from disease-induced changes in host metabolic pathways by SARS-CoV-2 viral pathogenesis. The unique mechanisms proposed from recent researchers to explain how COVID-19 causes damage to multiple organ systems throughout the body are associated with unique symptom combinations, cytokine storms and physiological cascades that disrupt normal biochemical processes through gene dysregulation to generate disease-specific VOC metabolites targeted for e-nose detection. This paper reviewed recent methods and applications of e-nose and related VOC-detection devices for early, noninvasive diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infections. In addition, metabolomic (quantitative) COVID-19 disease-specific chemical biomarkers, consisting of host-derived VOCs identified from exhaled breath of patients, were summarized as possible sources of volatile metabolic biomarkers useful for confirming and supporting e-nose diagnoses. Activity monitoring has become a necessary demand for weak people to guarantee their safety. The paper proposed a Parallel Training Logical Execution (PTLE) system using machine learning (ML) models on a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) accelerometer to detect coughs, falls, and other normal activities. When there are many categories, the ML prediction can be confused between these activities with each other. The PTLE system trains several models in parallel with more specific activity classes in each dataset. The shared tasks between parallel models relieve the complexity for a single one. There are six additional parameters for accelerometer characteristics, which were calculated from three axes accelerations as input features to improve the ML's consciousness. Once all models were trained, the system was ready to receive the input accelerations and activated the logical flow to manage link operation between these ML models for output predictions. Random Forest (RF) had the highest potential among the ML classification algorithms after the validation. In the experiment, the comparison between the PTLE model and the regular ML model were carried out with real-time data from an M5stickC wearable device on the user's chest to the trained models on PC. The result showed the advancement of the proposed method in term of precision, recall, F1-score with an overall accuracy of 98% in the real-time test. The accelerations from the wearable device were sent to ML models via Wi-Fi with Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) broker, and the activity predictions were transferred to the cloud for the family members or doctor care based on Internet of Things (IoT) communication. This paper proposes a new deep learning (DL) framework for the analysis of lung diseases, including COVID-19 and pneumonia, from chest CT scans and X-ray (CXR) images. This framework is termed optimized DenseNet201 for lung diseases (LDDNet). The proposed LDDNet was developed using additional layers of 2D global average pooling, dense and dropout layers, and batch normalization to the base DenseNet201 model. There are 1024 Relu-activated dense layers and 256 dense layers using the sigmoid activation method. The hyper-parameters of the model, including the learning rate, batch size, epochs, and dropout rate, were tuned for the model. Next, three datasets of lung diseases were formed from separate open-access sources. One was a CT scan dataset containing 1043 images. Two X-ray datasets comprising images of COVID-19-affected lungs, pneumonia-affected lungs, and healthy lungs exist, with one being an imbalanced dataset with 5935 images and the other being a balanced dataset with 5002 images. The performance of each model was analyzed using the Adam, Nadam, and SGD optimizers. The best results have been obtained for both the CT scan and CXR datasets using the Nadam optimizer. For the CT scan images, LDDNet showed a COVID-19-positive classification accuracy of 99.36%, a 100% precision recall of 98%, and an F1 score of 99%. For the X-ray dataset of 5935 images, LDDNet provides a 99.55% accuracy, 73% recall, 100% precision, and 85% F1 score using the Nadam optimizer in detecting COVID-19-affected patients. For the balanced X-ray dataset, LDDNet provides a 97.07% classification accuracy. The novel coronavirus (COVID-19), which emerged as a pandemic, has engulfed so many lives and affected millions of people across the world since December 2019. Although this disease is under control nowadays, yet it is still affecting people in many countries. The traditional way of diagnosis is time taking, less efficient, and has a low rate of detection of this disease. Therefore, there is a need for an automatic system that expedites the diagnosis process while retaining its performance and accuracy. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies such as machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) potentially provide powerful solutions to address this problem. In this study, a state-of-the-art CNN model densely connected squeeze convolutional neural network (DCSCNN) has been developed for the classification of X-ray images of COVID-19, pneumonia, normal, and lung opacity patients. Data were collected from different sources. We applied different preprocessing techniques to enhance the quality of images so that our model could learn accurately and give optimal performance. Moreover, the attention regions and decisions of the AI model were visualized using the Grad-CAM and LIME methods. The DCSCNN combines the strength of the Dense and Squeeze networks. In our experiment, seven kinds of classification have been performed, in which six are binary classifications (COVID vs. normal, COVID vs. lung opacity, lung opacity vs. normal, COVID vs. pneumonia, pneumonia vs. lung opacity, pneumonia vs. normal) and one is multiclass classification (COVID vs. pneumonia vs. lung opacity vs. normal). The main contributions of this paper are as follows. First, the development of the DCSNN model which is capable of performing binary classification as well as multiclass classification with excellent classification accuracy. Second, to ensure trust, transparency, and explainability of the model, we applied two popular Explainable AI techniques (XAI). i.e., Grad-CAM and LIME. These techniques helped to address the black-box nature of the model while improving the trust, transparency, and explainability of the model. Our proposed DCSCNN model achieved an accuracy of 98.8% for the classification of COVID-19 vs normal, followed by COVID-19 vs. lung opacity: 98.2%, lung opacity vs. normal: 97.2%, COVID-19 vs. pneumonia: 96.4%, pneumonia vs. lung opacity: 95.8%, pneumonia vs. normal: 97.4%, and lastly for multiclass classification of all the four classes i.e., COVID vs. pneumonia vs. lung opacity vs. normal: 94.7%, respectively. This article focuses on the problem of detecting disinformation about COVID-19 in online discussions. As the Internet expands, so does the amount of content on it. In addition to content based on facts, a large amount of content is being manipulated, which negatively affects the whole society. This effect is currently compounded by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which caused people to spend even more time online and to get more invested in this fake content. This work brings a brief overview of how toxic information looks like, how it is spread, and how to potentially prevent its dissemination by early recognition of disinformation using deep learning. We investigated the overall suitability of deep learning in solving problem of detection of disinformation in conversational content. We also provided a comparison of architecture based on convolutional and recurrent principles. We have trained three detection models based on three architectures using CNN (convolutional neural networks), LSTM (long short-term memory), and their combination. We have achieved the best results using LSTM (F1 = 0.8741, Accuracy = 0.8628). But the results of all three architectures were comparable, for example the CNN+LSTM architecture achieved F1 = 0.8672 and Accuracy = 0.852. The paper offers finding that introducing a convolutional component does not bring significant improvement. In this paper, a comparative analysis between the PM 2.5 concentration in downtown Quito, Ecuador, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the previous five years (from 2015 to 2019) was carried out. Here, in order to fill in the missing data and achieve homogeneity, eight datasets were constructed, and 35 different estimates were used together with six interpolation methods to put in the estimated value of the missing data. Additionally, the quality of the estimations was verified by using the sum of squared residuals and the following correlation coefficients: Pearson's r, Kendall's τ , and Spearman's ρ. Next, feature vectors were constructed from the data under study using the wavelet transform, and the differences between feature vectors were studied by using principal component analysis and multidimensional scaling. Finally, a robust method to impute missing data in time series and characterize objects is presented. This paper presents an improved IoT-based system designed to help teachers handle lessons in the classroom in line with COVID-19 restrictions. The system counts the number of people in the classroom as well as their distribution within the classroom. The proposed IoT system consists of three parts: a Gate node, IoT nodes, and server. The Gate node, installed at the door, can provide information about the number of persons entering or leaving the room using door crossing detection. The Arduino-based module NodeMCU was used as an IoT node and sets of ultrasonic distance sensors were used to obtain information about seat occupancy. The system server runs locally on a Raspberry Pi and the teacher can connect to it using a web application from the computer in the classroom or a smartphone. The teacher is able to set up and change the settings of the system through its GUI. A simple algorithm was designed to check the distance between occupied seats and evaluate the accordance with imposed restrictions. This system can provide high privacy, unlike camera-based systems. Due to the recent pandemic caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the lateral flow immunoassay used for its rapid antigen test is more popular than ever before. However, the history of the lateral flow immunoassay is about 60 years old, and its original purpose of use, such as a COVID-19 rapid antigen test or a pregnancy test, was the qualitative detection of a target analyte. Recently, the demand for quantitative analysis of lateral flow immunoassays is increasing in various fields. Lateral flow immunoassays for quantitative detection using various materials and sensor technologies are being introduced, and readers for analyzing them are being developed. Quantitative analysis readers are highly anticipated for their future development in line with technological advancements such as optical, magnetic field, photothermal, and electrochemical sensors and trends such as weight reduction, miniaturization, and cost reduction of systems. In addition, the sensing, processing, and communication functions of portable personal devices such as smartphones can be used as tools for the quantitative analysis of lateral flow immunoassays. As a result, lateral flow immunoassays can efficiently achieve the goal of rapid diagnosis by point-of-care testing. Readers used for the quantification of lateral flow immunoassays were classified according to the adopted sensor technology, and the research trends in each were reviewed in this paper. Machine learning approaches are employed to analyze differences in real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction scans to differentiate between COVID-19 and pneumonia. However, these methods suffer from large training data requirements, unreliable images, and uncertain clinical diagnosis. Thus, in this paper, we used a machine learning model to differentiate between COVID-19 and pneumonia via radiomic features using a bias-minimized dataset of chest X-ray scans. We used logistic regression (LR), naive Bayes (NB), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), bagging, random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), and light gradient boosting machine (LGBM) to differentiate between COVID-19 and pneumonia based on training data. Further, we used a grid search to determine optimal hyperparameters for each machine learning model and 5-fold cross-validation to prevent overfitting. The identification performances of COVID-19 and pneumonia were compared with separately constructed test data for four machine learning models trained using the maximum probability, contrast, and difference variance of the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), and the skewness as input variables. The LGBM and bagging model showed the highest and lowest performances; the GLCM difference variance showed a high overall effect in all models. As a consequence of the COVID-19 emergency, frail citizens felt isolated because of social isolation, suspended and/or strongly reduced home assistance, and limited access to hospitals. In this sense, assistive technology could play a pivotal role in empowering frail older adults reducing their isolation, as well as in reinforcing the work of formal caregivers and professionals. In this context, the goal of this paper is to present four pilot studies—conducted from March 2020 to April 2021—to promptly react to COVID-19 by providing assistive technology solutions, aiming to (1) guarantee high-quality service to older adults in-home or in residential facility contexts, (2) promote social inclusion, and (3) reduce the virus transmission. In particular, four services, namely, telepresence service, remote monitoring service, virtual visit, and environmental disinfection, were designed, implemented, and tested in real environments involving 85 end-users to assess the user experience and/or preliminary assess the technical feasibility. The results underlined that all the proposed services were generally accepted by older adults and professionals. Additionally, the results remarked that the use of telepresence robots in private homes and residential facilities increased enjoyment reducing anxiety, whereas the monitoring service supported the clinicians in monitoring the discharged COVID-19 patients. It is also worth mentioning that two new services/products were developed to disinfect the environment and to allow virtual visits within the framework of a hospital information system. The virtual visits service offered the opportunity to expand the portfolio of hospital services. The main barriers were found in education, technology interoperability, and ethical/legal/privacy compliance. Filter face masks are Respiratory Protective Equipment designed to protect the wearer from various hazards, suit various health situations, and match the specific requirements of the wearer. Current traditional face masks have several limitations. In this paper, we present (ME) 2 , the Monitoring Equipment Mask Environment: an innovative reusable 3D-printed eco-sustainable mask with an interchangeable filter. (ME) 2 is equipped with multiple vital sensors on board, connected to a system-on-a-chip micro-controller with computational capabilities, Bluetooth communication, and a rechargeable battery that allows continuous monitoring of the wearer's vital signs. It monitors body temperature, heart rate, and oxygen saturation in a non-invasive, strategically positioned way. (ME) 2 is accompanied by a mobile application that provides users' health information. Furthermore, through Edge Computing Artificial Intelligence (Edge AI) modules, it is possible to detect an abnormal and early symptoms linked to possible pathologies, possibly linked to the respiratory or cardiovascular tract, and therefore perform predictive analysis, launch alerts, and recommendations. To validate the feasibility of embedded in-app Edge AI modules, we tested a machine learning model able to distinguish COVID-19 versus seasonal influenza using only vital signs. In this paper, we address the challenging task of estimating the distance between different users in a Millimeter Wave (mmWave) massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (mMIMO) system. The conventional Time of Arrival (ToA) and Angle of Arrival (AoA) based methods need users under the Line-of-Sight (LoS) scenario. Under the Non-LoS (NLoS) scenario, the fingerprint-based method can extract the fingerprint that includes the location information of users from the channel state information (CSI). However, high accuracy CSI estimation involves a huge overhead and high computational complexity. Thus, we design a new type of fingerprint generated by beam sweeping. In other words, we do not have to know the CSI to generate fingerprint. In general, each user can record the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) of the received beams by performing beam sweeping. Such measured RSSI values, formatted in a matrix, could be seen as beam energy image containing the angle and location information. However, we do not use the beam energy image as the fingerprint directly. Instead, we use the difference between two beam energy images as the fingerprint to train a Deep Neural Network (DNN) that learns the relationship between the fingerprints and the distance between these two users. Because the proposed fingerprint is rich in terms of the users' location information, the DNN can easily learn the relationship between the difference between two beam energy images and the distance between those two users. We term it as the DNN-based inter-user distance (IUD) estimation method. Nonetheless, we investigate the possibility of using a super-resolution network to reduce the involved beam sweeping overhead. Using super-resolution to increase the resolution of low-resolution beam energy images obtained by the wide beam sweeping for IUD estimation can facilitate considerate improvement in accuracy performance. We evaluate the proposed DNN-based IUD estimation method by using original images of resolution 4 × 4, 8 × 8, and 16 × 16. Simulation results show that our method can achieve an average distance estimation error equal to 0.13 m for a coverage area of 60 × 30 m2. Digital twins (DTs) play a vital role in revolutionising the healthcare industry, leading to more personalised, intelligent, and proactive healthcare. With the evolution of personalised healthcare, there is a significant need to represent a virtual replica for individuals to provide the right type of care in the right way and at the right time. Therefore, in this paper, we surveyed the concept of a personal digital twin (PDT) as an enhanced version of the DT with actionable insight capabilities. In particular, PDT can bring value to patients by enabling more accurate decision making and proper treatment selection and optimisation. Then, we explored the progression of PDT as a revolutionary technology in healthcare research and industry. However, although several research works have been performed for smart healthcare using DT, PDT is still at an early stage. Consequently, we believe that this work can be a step towards smart personalised healthcare industry by guiding the design of industrial personalised healthcare systems. Accordingly, we introduced a reference framework that empowers smart personalised healthcare using PDTs by bringing together existing advanced technologies (i.e., DT, blockchain, and AI). Then, we described some selected use cases, including the mitigation of COVID-19 contagion, COVID-19 survivor follow-up care, personalised COVID-19 medicine, personalised osteoporosis prevention, personalised cancer survivor follow-up care, and personalised nutrition. The interruption of rehabilitation activities caused by the COVID-19 lockdown has significant health negative consequences for the population with physical disabilities. Thus, measuring the range of motion (ROM) using remotely taken photographs, which are then sent to specialists for formal assessment, has been recommended. Currently, low-cost Kinect motion capture sensors with a natural user interface are the most feasible implementations for upper limb motion analysis. An active range of motion (AROM) measuring system based on a Kinect v2 sensor for upper limb motion analysis using Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) scoring is described in this paper. Two test groups of children, each having eighteen participants, were analyzed in the experimental stage, where upper limbs' AROM and motor performance were assessed using FMA. Participants in the control group (mean age of 7.83 ± 2.54 years) had no cognitive impairment or upper limb musculoskeletal problems. The study test group comprised children aged 8.28 ± 2.32 years with spastic hemiparesis. A total of 30 samples of elbow flexion and 30 samples of shoulder abduction of both limbs for each participant were analyzed using the Kinect v2 sensor at 30 Hz. In both upper limbs, no significant differences (p < 0.05) in the measured angles and FMA assessments were observed between those obtained using the described Kinect v2-based system and those obtained directly using a universal goniometer. The measurement error achieved by the proposed system was less than ±1° compared to the specialist's measurements. According to the obtained results, the developed measuring system is a good alternative and an effective tool for FMA assessment of AROM and motor performance of upper limbs, while avoiding direct contact in both healthy children and children with spastic hemiparesis. The COVID-19 Pandemic has punched a devastating blow on the majority of the world's population. Millions of people have been infected while hundreds of thousands have died of the disease throwing many families into mourning and other psychological torments. It has also crippled the economy of many countries of the world leading to job losses, high inflation, and dwindling Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The duo of social distancing and contact tracing are the major technological-based non-pharmaceutical public health intervention strategies adopted for combating the dreaded disease. These technologies have been deployed by different countries around the world to achieve effective and efficient means of maintaining appropriate distance and tracking the transmission pattern of the diseases or identifying those at high risk of infecting others. This paper aims to synthesize the research efforts on contact tracing and social distancing to minimize the spread of COVID-19. The paper critically and comprehensively reviews contact tracing technologies, protocols, and mobile applications (apps) that were recently developed and deployed against the coronavirus disease. Furthermore, the paper discusses social distancing technologies, appropriate methods to maintain distances, regulations, isolation/quarantine, and interaction strategies. In addition, the paper highlights different security/privacy vulnerabilities identified in contact tracing and social distancing technologies and solutions against these vulnerabilities. We also x-rayed the strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies concerning their application in contact tracing and social distancing. Finally, the paper proposed insightful recommendations and open research directions in contact tracing and social distancing that could assist researchers, developers, and governments in implementing new technological methods to combat the menace of COVID-19. Life was once normal before the first announcement of COVID-19's first case in Wuhan, China, and what was slowly spreading became an overnight worldwide pandemic. Ever since the virus spread at the end of 2019, it has been morphing and rapidly adapting to human nature changes which cause difficult conundrums in the efforts of fighting it. Thus, researchers were steered to investigate the virus in order to contain the outbreak considering its novelty and there being no known cure. In contribution to that, this paper extensively reviewed, compared, and analyzed two main points; SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission in humans and detection methods of COVID-19 in the human body. SARS-CoV-2 human exchange transmission methods reviewed four modes of transmission which are Respiratory Transmission, Fecal–Oral Transmission, Ocular transmission, and Vertical Transmission. The latter point particularly sheds light on the latest discoveries and advancements in the aim of COVID-19 diagnosis and detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus associated with this disease in the human body. Existing wearable systems that use G-sensors to identify daily activities have been widely applied for medical, sports and military applications, while body temperature as an obvious physical characteristic that has rarely been considered in the system design and relative applications of HAR. In the context of the normalization of COVID-19, the prevention and control of the epidemic has become a top priority. Temperature monitoring plays an important role in the preliminary screening of the population for fever. Therefore, this paper proposes a wearable device embedded with inertial and temperature sensors that is used to apply human behavior recognition (HAR) to body surface temperature detection for body temperature monitoring and adjustment by evaluating recognition algorithms. The sensing system consists of an STM 32-based microcontroller, a 6-axis (accelerometer and gyroscope) sensor, and a temperature sensor to capture the original data from 10 individual participants under 4 different daily activity scenarios. Then, the collected raw data are pre-processed by signal standardization, data stacking and resampling. For HAR, several machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms are implemented to classify the activities. To compare the performance of different classifiers on the seven-dimensional dataset with temperature sensing signals, evaluation metrics and the algorithm running time are considered, and random forest (RF) is found to be the best-performing classifier with 88.78% recognition accuracy, which is higher than the case of the absence of temperature data (<78%). In addition, the experimental results show that participants' body surface temperature in dynamic activities was lower compared to sitting, which can be associated with the possible missing fever population due to temperature deviations in COVID-19 prevention. According to different individual activities, epidemic prevention workers are supposed to infer the corresponding standard normal body temperature of a patient by referring to the specific values of the mean expectation and variance in the normal distribution curve provided in this paper. The literature on coronaviruses counts more than 300,000 publications. Finding relevant papers concerning arbitrary queries is essential to discovery helpful knowledge. Current best information retrieval (IR) use deep learning approaches and need supervised training sets with labeled data, namely to know a priori the queries and their corresponding relevant papers. Creating such labeled datasets is time-expensive and requires prominent experts' efforts, resources insufficiently available under a pandemic time pressure. We present a new self-supervised solution, called SUBLIMER, that does not require labels to learn to search on corpora of scientific papers for most relevant against arbitrary queries. SUBLIMER is a novel efficient IR engine trained on the unsupervised COVID-19 Open Research Dataset (CORD19), using deep metric learning. The core point of our self-supervised approach is that it uses no labels, but exploits the bibliography citations from papers to create a latent space where their spatial proximity is a metric of semantic similarity; for this reason, it can also be applied to other domains of papers corpora. SUBLIMER, despite is self-supervised, outperforms the Precision@5 (P@5) and Bpref of the state-of-the-art competitors on CORD19, which, differently from our approach, require both labeled datasets and a number of trainable parameters that is an order of magnitude higher than our. Although the potential economic value of open (government) data is assessed in millions and billions, not all open data are reused. Moreover, the open (government) data initiative as well as users' intent for open (government) data are changing continuously and today, in line with IoT and smart city trends, real-time data and sensor-generated data have higher interest for users. These "smarter" open (government) data are also considered to be one of the crucial drivers for the sustainable economy, and might have an impact on information and communication technology (ICT) innovation and become a creativity bridge in developing a new ecosystem in Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0. The paper inspects OGD portals of 60 countries in order to understand the correspondence of their content to the Society 5.0 expectations. The paper provides a report on how much countries provide these data, focusing on some open (government) data success facilitating factors for both the portal in general and data sets of interest in particular. The presence of "smarter" data, their level of accessibility, availability, currency and timeliness, as well as support for users, are analyzed. The list of most competitive countries by data category are provided. Modernization of the industrial engineering curriculum combined with its migration to a blended teaching landscape must be updated in real-time with real-world cases. The COVID-19 crisis provides, paradoxically, an opportunity for dealing with the challenges of training industrial engineers to confront a virtual dematerialized work model which has accelerated during and will remain for the foreseeable future after the pandemic. The paper describes the methodology used for adapting, enhancing, and evaluating the learning and teaching experience under the urgent and unexpected challenges to move from face-to-face university courses distant and online teaching. The methodology we describe is built on a process that started before the onset of the pandemic, hence in the paper we start by describing the pre-COVID-19 status in comparison to published initiatives followed by the real time modifications we introduced in the faculty to adapt to the post-COVID-19 teaching/learning era. The COVID-19 epidemic has caused a large number of human losses and havoc in the economic, social, societal, and health systems around the world. Controlling such epidemic requires understanding its characteristics and behavior, which can be identified by collecting and analyzing the related big data. Big data analytics tools play a vital role in building knowledge required in making decisions and precautionary measures. However, due to the vast amount of data available on COVID-19 from various sources, there is a need to review the roles of big data analysis in controlling the spread of COVID-19, presenting the main challenges and directions of COVID-19 data analysis, as well as providing a framework on the related existing applications and studies to facilitate future research on COVID-19 analysis. Therefore, in this paper, we conduct a literature review to highlight the contributions of several studies in the domain of COVID-19-based big data analysis. The study presents as a taxonomy several applications used to manage and control the pandemic. Moreover, this study discusses several challenges encountered when analyzing COVID-19 data. Recent studies indicate that detecting radiographic patterns on CT chest scans can yield high sensitivity and specificity for COVID-19 identification. In this paper, we scrutinize the effectiveness of deep learning models for semantic segmentation of pneumonia-infected area segmentation in CT images for the detection of COVID-19. Traditional methods for CT scan segmentation exploit a supervised learning paradigm, so they (a) require large volumes of data for their training, and (b) assume fixed (static) network weights once the training procedure has been completed. Recently, to overcome these difficulties, few-shot learning (FSL) has been introduced as a general concept of network model training using a very small amount of samples. In this paper, we explore the efficacy of few-shot learning in U-Net architectures, allowing for a dynamic fine-tuning of the network weights as new few samples are being fed into the U-Net. Experimental results indicate improvement in the segmentation accuracy of identifying COVID-19 infected regions. In particular, using 4-fold cross-validation results of the different classifiers, we observed an improvement of 5.388 ± 3.046% for all test data regarding the IoU metric and a similar increment of 5.394 ± 3.015% for the F1 score. Moreover, the statistical significance of the improvement obtained using our proposed few-shot U-Net architecture compared with the traditional U-Net model was confirmed by applying the Kruskal-Wallis test (p-value = 0.026). The need to measure body temperature contactless and quickly during the COVID-19 pandemic emergency has led to the widespread use of infrared thermometers, thermal imaging cameras and thermal scanners as an alternative to the traditional contact clinical thermometers. However, limits and issues of noncontact temperature measurement devices are not well known and technical–scientific literature itself sometimes provides conflicting reference values on the body and skin temperature of healthy subjects. To limit the risk of contagion, national authorities have set the obligation to measure body temperature of workers at the entrance to the workplace. In this paper, the authors analyze noncontact body temperature measurement issues from both clinical and metrological points of view with the aim to (i) improve body temperature measurements accuracy; (ii) estimate the uncertainty of body temperature measurement on the field; (iii) propose a screening decision rule for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19. The approach adopted in this paper takes into account both the traditional instrumental uncertainty sources and clinical–medical ones related to the subjectivity of the measurand. A proper screening protocol for body temperature measurement considering the role of uncertainty is essential to correctly choose the threshold temperature value and measurement method to access critical places during COVID-19 pandemic emergency. COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has resulted in a global pandemic recently. With no approved vaccination or treatment, governments around the world have issued guidance to their citizens to remain at home in efforts to control the spread of the disease. The goal of controlling the spread of the virus is to prevent strain on hospitals. In this paper, we focus on how non-invasive methods are being used to detect COVID-19 and assist healthcare workers in caring for COVID-19 patients. Early detection of COVID-19 can allow for early isolation to prevent further spread. This study outlines the advantages and disadvantages and a breakdown of the methods applied in the current state-of-the-art approaches. Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has posed a serious threat to the lives and health of the majority of people worldwide. Since the early days of the outbreak, South Korea's government and citizens have made persistent efforts to provide effective prevention against further spread of the disease. In particular, the participation of individual citizens in complying with the necessary code of conduct to prevent spread of the infection, through measures such as social distancing and mask wearing, is as instrumental as the geographical tracking of the trajectory of the infected. In this paper, we propose an activity recognition method based on a wristband equipped with an IR array and inertial measurement unit (IMU) to detect individual compliance with codes of personal hygiene management, such as mask wearing, which are recommended to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The results of activity recognition were comparatively analyzed by applying conventional machine learning algorithms and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to the IMU time series and IR array thermal images collected from 25 subjects. When CNN and 24 × 32 thermal images were used, 97.8% accuracy was achieved (best performance), and when 6 × 8 low-resolution thermal images were used, similar performance with 97.1% accuracy was obtained. In the case of using IMU, the performance of activity recognition was lower than that obtained with the IR array, but an accuracy of 93% was achieved even in the case of applying machine learning algorithms, indicating that it is more suitable for wearable devices with low computational capability. The coronavirus pandemic, also known as the COVID-19 pandemic, is an ongoing virus. It was first identified on December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and later spread to 192 countries. As of now, 251,266,207 people have been affected, and 5,070,244 deaths are reported. Due to the growing number of COVID-19 patients, the demand for COVID wards is increasing. Telemedicine applications are increasing drastically because of convenient treatment options. The healthcare sector is rapidly adopting telemedicine applications for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. Most telemedicine applications are developed for heterogeneous environments and due to their diverse nature, data transmission between similar and dissimilar telemedicine applications is a difficult task. In this paper, we propose a Tele-COVID system architecture design along with its security aspects to provide the treatment for COVID-19 patients from distance. Tele-COVID secure system architecture is designed to resolve the problem of data interchange between two different telemedicine applications, interoperability, and vendor lock-in. Tele-COVID is a web-based and Android telemedicine application that provides suitable treatment to COVID-19 patients. With the help of Tele-COVID, the treatment of patients at a distance is possible without the need for them to visit hospitals; in case of emergency, necessary services can also be provided. This paper presents a more detailed concept of Human-Robot Interaction systems architecture. One of the main differences between the proposed architecture and other ones is the methodology of information acquisition regarding the robot's interlocutor. In order to obtain as much information as possible before the actual interaction took place, a custom Internet-of-Things-based sensor subsystems connected to Smart Infrastructure was designed and implemented, in order to support the interlocutor identification and acquisition of initial interaction parameters. The Artificial Intelligence interaction framework of the developed robotic system (including humanoid Pepper with its sensors and actuators, additional local, remote and cloud computing services) is being extended with the use of custom external subsystems for additional knowledge acquisition: device-based human identification, visual identification and audio-based interlocutor localization subsystems. These subsystems were deeply introduced and evaluated in this paper, presenting the benefits of integrating them into the robotic interaction system. In this paper a more detailed analysis of one of the external subsystems—Bluetooth Human Identification Smart Subsystem—was also included. The idea, use case, and a prototype, integration of elements of Smart Infrastructure systems and the prototype implementation were performed in a small front office of the Weegree company as a decent test-bed application area. COVID-19 has disrupted every field of life and education is not immune to it. Student learning and examinations moved on-line on a few weeks notice, which has created a large workload for academics to grade the assessments and manually detect students' dishonesty. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically indicate cheating in unproctored on-line exams, when somebody else other than the legitimate student takes the exam. The method is based on the analysis of the student's on-line traces, which are logged by distance education systems. We work with customized IP geolocation and other data to derive the student's cheating risk score. We apply the method to approx. 3600 students in 22 courses, where the partial or final on-line exams were unproctored. The found cheating risk scores are presented along with examples of indicated cheatings. The method can be used to select students for knowledge re-validation, or to compare student cheating across courses, age groups, countries, and universities. In this paper, we present the design, development and implementation of an integrated system for the management of COVID-19 patient, using the LoRaWAN communication infrastructure. Our system offers certain advantages when compared to other similar solutions, allowing remote symptom and health monitoring that can be applied to isolated or quarantined people, without any external interaction with the patient. The IoT wearable device can monitor parameters of health condition like pulse, blood oxygen saturation, and body temperature, as well as the current location. To test the performance of the proposed system, two persons under quarantine were monitored, for a complete 14-day standard quarantine time interval. Based on the data transmitted to the monitoring center, the medical staff decided, after several days of monitoring, when the measured values were outside of the normal parameters, to do an RT-PCR test for one of the two persons, confirming the SARS-CoV2 virus infection. We have to emphasize the high degree of scalability of the proposed solution that can oversee a large number of patients at the same time, thanks to the LoRaWAN communication protocol used. Social distancing is crucial to restrain the spread of diseases such as COVID-19, but complete adherence to safety guidelines is not guaranteed. Monitoring social distancing through mass surveillance is paramount to develop appropriate mitigation plans and exit strategies. Nevertheless, it is a labor-intensive task that is prone to human error and tainted with plausible breaches of privacy. This paper presents a privacy-preserving adaptive social distance estimation and crowd monitoring solution for camera surveillance systems. We develop a novel person localization strategy through pose estimation, build a privacy-preserving adaptive smoothing and tracking model to mitigate occlusions and noisy/missing measurements, compute inter-personal distances in the real-world coordinates, detect social distance infractions, and identify overcrowded regions in a scene. Performance evaluation is carried out by testing the system's ability in person detection, localization, density estimation, anomaly recognition, and high-risk areas identification. We compare the proposed system to the latest techniques and examine the performance gain delivered by the localization and smoothing/tracking algorithms. Experimental results indicate a considerable improvement, across different metrics, when utilizing the developed system. The most effective methods of preventing COVID-19 infection include maintaining physical distancing and wearing a face mask while in close contact with people in public places. However, densely populated areas have a greater incidence of COVID-19 dissemination, which is caused by people who do not comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs). This paper presents a prototype called PADDIE-C19 (Physical Distancing Device with Edge Computing for COVID-19) to implement the physical distancing monitoring based on a low-cost edge computing device. The PADDIE-C19 provides real-time results and responses, as well as notifications and warnings to anyone who violates the 1-m physical distance rule. In addition, PADDIE-C19 includes temperature screening using an MLX90614 thermometer and ultrasonic sensors to restrict the number of people on specified premises. The Neural Network Processor (KPU) in Grove Artificial Intelligence Hardware Attached on Top (AI HAT), an edge computing unit, is used to accelerate the neural network model on person detection and achieve up to 18 frames per second (FPS). The results show that the accuracy of person detection with Grove AI HAT could achieve 74.65% and the average absolute error between measured and actual physical distance is 8.95 cm. Furthermore, the accuracy of the MLX90614 thermometer is guaranteed to have less than 0.5 °C value difference from the more common Fluke 59 thermometer. Experimental results also proved that when cloud computing is compared to edge computing, the Grove AI HAT achieves the average performance of 18 FPS for a person detector (kmodel) with an average 56 ms execution time in different networks, regardless of the network connection type or speed. Physiological measures, such as heart rate variability (HRV) and beats per minute (BPM), can be powerful health indicators of respiratory infections. HRV and BPM can be acquired through widely available wrist-worn biometric wearables and smartphones. Successive abnormal changes in these indicators could potentially be an early sign of respiratory infections such as COVID-19. Thus, wearables and smartphones should play a significant role in combating COVID-19 through the early detection supported by other contextual data and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. In this paper, we investigate the role of the heart measurements (i.e., HRV and BPM) collected from wearables and smartphones in demonstrating early onsets of the inflammatory response to the COVID-19. The AI framework consists of two blocks: an interpretable prediction model to classify the HRV measurements status (as normal or affected by inflammation) and a recurrent neural network (RNN) to analyze users' daily status (i.e., textual logs in a mobile application). Both classification decisions are integrated to generate the final decision as either "potentially COVID-19 infected" or "no evident signs of infection". We used a publicly available dataset, which comprises 186 patients with more than 3200 HRV readings and numerous user textual logs. The first evaluation of the approach showed an accuracy of 83.34 ± 1.68% with 0.91, 0.88, 0.89 precision, recall, and F1-Score, respectively, in predicting the infection two days before the onset of the symptoms supported by a model interpretation using the local interpretable model-agnostic explanations (LIME).
