In response to the challenges posed by small objects in remote sensing images, such as low resolution, complex backgrounds, and severe occlusions, this paper proposes a lightweight improved model based on YOLOv8n. During the detection of small objects, the feature fusion part of the YOLOv8n algorithm retrieves relatively fewer features of small objects from the backbone network compared to large objects, resulting in low detection accuracy for small objects. To address this issue, firstly, this paper adds a dedicated small object detection layer in the feature fusion network to better integrate the features of small objects into the feature fusion part of the model. Secondly, the SSFF module is introduced to facilitate multi-scale feature fusion, enabling the model to capture more gradient paths and further improve accuracy while reducing model parameters. Finally, the HPANet structure is proposed, replacing the Path Aggregation Network with HPANet. Compared to the original YOLOv8n algorithm, the recognition accuracy of mAP@0.5 on the VisDrone data set and the AI-TOD data set has increased by 14.3% and 17.9%, respectively, while the recognition accuracy of mAP@0.5:0.95 has increased by 17.1% and 19.8%, respectively. The proposed method reduces the parameter count by 33% and the model size by 31.7% compared to the original model. The identification of maritime targets plays a critical role in ensuring maritime safety and safeguarding against potential threats. While satellite remote-sensing imagery serves as the primary data source for monitoring maritime targets, it only provides positional and morphological characteristics without detailed identity information, presenting limitations as a sole data source. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method for enhancing maritime target identification and positioning accuracy through the fusion of Automatic Identification System (AIS) data and satellite remote-sensing imagery. The AIS utilizes radio communication to acquire multidimensional feature information describing targets, serving as an auxiliary data source to complement the limitations of image data and achieve maritime target identification. Additionally, the positional information provided by the AIS can serve as maritime control points to correct positioning errors and enhance accuracy. By utilizing data from the Jilin-1 Spectral-01 satellite imagery with a resolution of 5 m and AIS data, the feasibility of the proposed method is validated through experiments. Following preprocessing, maritime target fusion is achieved using a point-set matching algorithm based on positional features and a fuzzy comprehensive decision method incorporating attribute features. Subsequently, the successful fusion of target points is utilized for positioning error correction. Experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in maritime target positioning accuracy compared to raw data, with over a 70% reduction in root mean square error and positioning errors controlled within 4 pixels, providing relatively accurate target positions that essentially meet practical requirements. Due to the limited semantic information extraction with small objects and difficulty in distinguishing similar targets, it brings great challenges to target detection in remote sensing scenarios, which results in poor detection performance. This paper proposes an improved YOLOv5 remote sensing image target detection algorithm, SEB-YOLO (SPD-Conv + ECSPP + Bi-FPN + YOLOv5). Firstly, the space-to-depth (SPD) layer followed by a non-strided convolution (Conv) layer module (SPD-Conv) was used to reconstruct the backbone network, which retained the global features and reduced the feature loss. Meanwhile, the pooling module with the attention mechanism of the final layer of the backbone network was designed to help the network better identify and locate the target. Furthermore, a bidirectional feature pyramid network (Bi-FPN) with bilinear interpolation upsampling was added to improve bidirectional cross-scale connection and weighted feature fusion. Finally, the decoupled head is introduced to enhance the model convergence and solve the contradiction between the classification task and the regression task. Experimental results on NWPU VHR-10 and RSOD datasets show that the mAP of the proposed algorithm reaches 93.5% and 93.9%respectively, which is 4.0% and 5.3% higher than that of the original YOLOv5l algorithm. Remote sensing images change detection technology has become a popular tool for monitoring the change type, area, and distribution of land cover, including cultivated land, forest land, photovoltaic, roads, and buildings. However, traditional methods which rely on pre-annotation and on-site verification are time-consuming and challenging to meet timeliness requirements. With the emergence of artificial intelligence, this paper proposes an automatic change detection model and a crowdsourcing collaborative framework. The framework uses human-in-the-loop technology and an active learning approach to transform the manual interpretation method into a human-machine collaborative intelligent interpretation method. This low-cost and high-efficiency framework aims to solve the problem of weak model generalization caused by the lack of annotated data in change detection. The proposed framework can effectively incorporate expert domain knowledge and reduce the cost of data annotation while improving model performance. To ensure data quality, a crowdsourcing quality control model is constructed to evaluate the annotation qualification of the annotators and check their annotation results. Furthermore, a prototype of automatic detection and crowdsourcing collaborative annotation management platform is developed, which integrates annotation, crowdsourcing quality control, and change detection applications. To address the challenges of handling imprecise building boundary information and reducing false-positive outcomes during the process of detecting building changes in remote sensing images, this paper proposes a Siamese transformer architecture based on a difference module. This method introduces a layered transformer to provide global context modeling capability and multiscale features to better process building boundary information, and a difference module is used to better obtain the difference features of a building before and after a change. The difference features before and after the change are then fused, and the fused difference features are used to generate a change map, which reduces the false-positive problem to a certain extent. Experiments were conducted on two publicly available building change detection datasets, LEVIR-CD and WHU-CD. The F1 scores for LEVIR-CD and WHU-CD reached 89.58% and 84.51%, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that when utilized for building change detection in remote sensing images, the proposed method exhibits improved robustness and detection performance. To overcome the limitations of traditional on-orbit modulation function transfer (MTF) measurement methods that are heavily dependent on natural features, scenery, artificial edges, and point source targets, this paper presents an on-orbit MTF measurement method of remote sensing imager based on the refined image kernel (RIK) acquired directly from remote sensing images. First, the kernel is estimated from some remote sensing sub-images with rich texture details by using an iterative support detection (ISD) algorithm; then, it is refined by central pixel energy concentration (EC) to obtain the RIK. Secondly, the MTF curves are calculated by interpolating RIK and Fourier transform. Finally, the final MTF is the average value of MTFs at Nyquist frequency acquired by each RIK. To demonstrate the feasibility and validity of this method, the MTFs were compared to the result of the ISO12233 edge method with an error of no more than 7%. The relative error of the measured results does not exceed 5% for image signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) above 20dB. The results obtained from the on-orbit MTF measurement using remote sensing images of the Jilin-1 satellite have a maximum error of less than 2% compared with the ISO12233 edge method. These demonstrate that the method proposed in this paper supplies highly accurate and robust results and can successfully increase the efficiency of on-orbit MTF measurement, providing a reference for high-frequency monitoring of satellite on-orbit stability and their optical imaging quality. Current-day volcanic activity in the Azores archipelago is characterized by seismic events and secondary manifestations of volcanism. Remote sensing techniques have been widely employed to monitor deformation in volcanic systems, map lava flows, or detect high-temperature gas emissions. However, using satellite imagery, it is still challenging to identify low-magnitude thermal changes in a volcanic system. In 2010, after drilling a well for geothermal exploration on the northern flank of Fogo Volcano on São Miguel Island, a new degassing and thermal area emerged with maximum temperatures of 100 °C. In the present paper, using the ASTER sensor, we observed changes in the near-infrared signals (15 m spatial resolution) six months after the anomaly emerged. In contrast, the thermal signal (90 m spatial resolution) only changed its threshold value one and a half years after the anomaly was recognized. The results show that wavelength and spatial resolution can influence the response time in detecting changes in a system. This paper reiterates the importance of using thermal imaging and high spatial resolution images to monitor and map thermal anomalies in hydrothermal systems such as those found in the Azores. Motion blur recovery is a common method in the field of remote sensing image processing that can effectively improve the accuracy of detection and recognition. Among the existing motion blur recovery methods, the algorithms based on deep learning do not rely on a priori knowledge and, thus, have better generalizability. However, the existing deep learning algorithms usually suffer from feature misalignment, resulting in a high probability of missing details or errors in the recovered images. This paper proposes an end-to-end generative adversarial network (SDD-GAN) for single-image motion deblurring to address this problem and to optimize the recovery of blurred remote sensing images. Firstly, this paper applies a feature alignment module (FAFM) in the generator to learn the offset between feature maps to adjust the position of each sample in the convolution kernel and to align the feature maps according to the context; secondly, a feature importance selection module is introduced in the generator to adaptively filter the feature maps in the spatial and channel domains, preserving reliable details in the feature maps and improving the performance of the algorithm. In addition, this paper constructs a self-constructed remote sensing dataset (RSDATA) based on the mechanism of image blurring caused by the high-speed orbital motion of satellites. Comparative experiments are conducted on self-built remote sensing datasets and public datasets as well as on real remote sensing blurred images taken by an in-orbit satellite (CX-6(02)). Recently, target analysis using satellite SAR images has received much attention in the area of satellite SAR remote sensing. Because the spatial resolution of the target response in the satellite SAR image is a main factor that has a large effect on target analysis performances, the improvement of the spatial resolution of target response is required to enhance the target analysis capability. However, the spatial resolution is already determined in the satellite SAR system design process. To solve the above problem, the super-resolution techniques that have been applied to radar images can be utilized. However, the application of the super-resolution techniques to the target response in the satellite SAR image is not simple due to the following reasons. First, the target's motion induces severe blurring of the target response, which impedes the successful improvement of spatial resolution. Next, the zero-region in the frequency spectrum of the target image containing the target response also hinders the generation of the super-resolved image. To successfully improve spatial resolution of the satellite SAR image, the super-resolution techniques should be combined with proper preprocessing steps that can cope with the above two issues. In this paper, the whole super-resolution procedure for target responses in KOMPSAT-5 images is described. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the description of the whole super-resolution procedure for target responses is the first ever attempt in the area of satellite SAR. First, a target image containing the target response is extracted from a large-scale KOMPSAT-5 image. Subsequently, the target image is transformed to be appropriate for the utilization of super-resolution techniques by proper preprocessing steps, considering the direction of super resolution and the motion of the target. Then, some super-resolution techniques are utilized to improve the spatial resolutions and qualities of the target images. The super-resolution performances of the proposed scheme are validated using various target images for point static, extended static, and extended moving targets. The novelties of this paper can be summarized as follows: (1) the practical design of whole super-resolution processing for real satellite SAR images; (2) the performance evaluation of super-resolution techniques on real satellite SAR images. The results show that the proposed scheme can led to noticeable improvements of spatial resolution of the target images for various types of targets with reliable computation times. In addition, the proposed scheme also enhanced PSLR, ISLR, and IC, leading to clearer scattering information of the principal scatterers. Consequently, the proposed method can assist in extracting more precise and meaningful information for targets represented in KOMPSAT-5 images, which means great potential for target recognition. Introduction: Object detection in remotely sensed satellite images is critical to socio-economic, bio-physical, and environmental monitoring, necessary for the prevention of natural disasters such as flooding and fires, socio-economic service delivery, and general urban and rural planning and management. Whereas deep learning approaches have recently gained popularity in remotely sensed image analysis, they have been unable to efficiently detect image objects due to complex landscape heterogeneity, high inter-class similarity and intra-class diversity, and difficulty in acquiring suitable training data that represents the complexities, among others. Methods: To address these challenges, this study employed multi-object detection deep learning algorithms with a transfer learning approach on remotely sensed satellite imagery captured on a heterogeneous landscape. In the study, a new dataset of diverse features with five object classes collected from Google Earth Engine in various locations in southern KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa was used to evaluate the models. The dataset images were characterized with objects that have varying sizes and resolutions. Five (5) object detection methods based on R-CNN and YOLO architectures were investigated via experiments on our newly created dataset. Conclusions: This paper provides a comprehensive performance evaluation and analysis of the recent deep learning-based object detection methods for detecting objects in high-resolution remote sensing satellite images. The models were also evaluated on two publicly available datasets: Visdron and PASCAL VOC2007. Results showed that the highest detection accuracy of the vegetation and swimming pool instances was more than 90%, and the fastest detection speed 0.2 ms was observed in YOLOv8. Georeferencing accuracy plays a crucial role in providing high-quality ready-to-use remote sensing data. The georeferencing of nighttime thermal satellite imagery conducted by matching to a basemap is challenging due to the complexity of thermal radiation patterns in the diurnal cycle and the coarse resolution of thermal sensors in comparison to sensors used for imaging in the visual spectral range (which is typically used for creating basemaps). The presented paper introduces a novel approach for the improvement of the georeferencing of nighttime thermal ECOSTRESS imagery: an up-to-date reference is created for each to-be-georeferenced image, derived from land cover classification products. In the proposed method, edges of water bodies are used as matching objects, since water bodies exhibit a relatively high contrast with adjacent areas in nighttime thermal infrared imagery. The method was tested on imagery of the East African Rift and validated using manually set ground control check points. The results show that the proposed method improves the existing georeferencing of the tested ECOSTRESS images by 12.0 pixels on average. The strongest source of uncertainty for the proposed method is the accuracy of cloud masks because cloud edges can be mistaken for water body edges and included in fitting transformation parameters. The georeferencing improvement method is based on the physical properties of radiation for land masses and water bodies, which makes it potentially globally applicable, and is feasible to use with nighttime thermal infrared data from different sensors. Impervious surface as an evaluation indicator of urbanization is crucial for urban planning and management. It is necessary to obtain impervious surface information with high accuracy and resolution to meet dynamic monitoring under rapid urban development. At present, the methods of impervious surface extraction are primarily based on medium-low-resolution images. Therefore, it is of theoretical and application value to construct an impervious surface extraction method that applies to high-resolution satellite images and can solve the shadow misclassification problem. This paper builds an impervious surface extraction model by Bayes discriminant analysis (BDA). The Gaussian prior model is incorporated into the Bayes discriminant analysis to establish a new impervious surface extraction model (GBDA) applicable to high-resolution remote sensing images. Using GF-2 and Sentinel-2 remote sensing images as experimental data, we discuss and analyze the applicability of BDA and GBDA in impervious surface extraction of high-resolution remote sensing images. The results showed that the four methods, SVM, RF, BDA and GBDA, had OA values of 91.26%, 94.91%, 94.64% and 97.84% and Kappa values of 0.825, 0.898, 0.893 and 0.957, respectively, in the extraction results of GF-2. In the results of effective Sentinel-2 extraction, the OA values of the four methods were 87.94%, 91.79%, 92.19% and 93.51% and the Kappa values were 0.759, 0.836, 0.844 and 0.870, respectively. Compared with the support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and BDA methods, GBDA has significantly improved the extraction accuracy. GBDA enhances the robustness and generalization ability of the model and can improve the shadow misclassification phenomenon of high-resolution images. The model constructed in this paper is highly reliable for extracting impervious surfaces from high-resolution remote sensing images, exploring the application value of Bayes discriminant analysis in impervious surface extraction and providing technical support for impervious surface information of high spatial resolution and high quality. Nowadays, the leading role of data from sensors to monitor crop irrigation practices is indisputable. The combination of ground and space monitoring data and agrohydrological modeling made it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of crop irrigation. This paper presents some additions to recently published results of field study at the territory of the Privolzhskaya irrigation system located on the left bank of the Volga in the Russian Federation, during the growing season of 2012. Data were obtained for 19 crops of irrigated alfalfa during the second year of their growing period. Irrigation water applications to these crops was carried out by the center pivot sprinklers. The actual crop evapotranspiration and its components being derived with the SEBAL model from MODIS satellite images data. As a result, a time series of daily values of evapotranspiration and transpiration were obtained for the area occupied by each of these crops. To assess the effectiveness of irrigation of alfalfa crops, six indicators were used based on the use of data on yield, irrigation depth, actual evapotranspiration, transpiration and basal evaporation deficit. The series of indicators estimating irrigation effectiveness were analyzed and ranked. The obtained rank values were used to analyze the similarity and non-similarity of indicators of irrigation effectiveness of alfalfa crops. As a result of this analysis, the opportunity to assess irrigation effectiveness with the help of data from ground and space-based sensors was proved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent advances in remote sensed imagery and geospatial image processing using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have enabled the rapid and ongoing development of monitoring tools for crop management and the detection/surveillance of insect pests. This paper describes a (UAV) remote sensing-based methodology to increase the efficiency of existing surveillance practices (human inspectors and insect traps) for detecting pest infestations (e.g., grape phylloxera in vineyards). The methodology uses a UAV integrated with advanced digital hyperspectral, multispectral, and RGB sensors. We implemented the methodology for the development of a predictive model for phylloxera detection. In this method, we explore the combination of airborne RGB, multispectral, and hyperspectral imagery with ground-based data at two separate time periods and under different levels of phylloxera infestation. We describe the technology used-the sensors, the UAV, and the flight operations-the processing workflow of the datasets from each imagery type, and the methods for combining multiple airborne with ground-based datasets. Finally, we present relevant results of correlation between the different processed datasets. The objective of this research is to develop a novel methodology for collecting, processing, analysing and integrating multispectral, hyperspectral, ground and spatial data to remote sense different variables in different applications, such as, in this case, plant pest surveillance. The development of such methodology would provide researchers, agronomists, and UAV practitioners reliable data collection protocols and methods to achieve faster processing techniques and integrate multiple sources of data in diverse remote sensing applications. In this paper, two novel speed compensation algorithms for ISAR imaging under a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) condition have been proposed, which are based on the cubic phase function (CPF) and the integrated cubic phase function (ICPF), respectively. These two algorithms can estimate the speed of the target from the wideband radar echo directly, which breaks the limitation of speed measuring in a radar system. With the utilization of non-coherent accumulation, the ICPF-based speed compensation algorithm is robust to noise and can meet the requirement of speed compensation for ISAR imaging under a low SNR condition. Moreover, a fast searching implementation strategy, which consists of coarse search and precise search, has been introduced to decrease the computational burden of speed compensation based on CPF and ICPF. Detection of urban area extents by means of remotely sensed data is a difficult task, especially because of the multiple, diverse definitions of what an "urban area" is. The models of urban areas listed in technical literature are based on the combination of spectral information with spatial patterns, possibly at different spatial resolutions. Starting from the same data set, "urban area" extraction may thus lead to multiple outputs. If this is done in a well-structured framework, however, this may be considered as an advantage rather than an issue. This paper proposes a novel framework for urban area extent extraction from multispectral Earth Observation (EO) data. The key is to compute and combine spectral and multi-scale spatial features. By selecting the most adequate features, and combining them with proper logical rules, the approach allows matching multiple urban area models. The presented paper deals with the issue of selecting a suitable system for monitoring the winter wheat crop in order to determine its condition as a basis for variable applications of nitrogen fertilizers. In a four-year (2017–2020) field experiment, 1400 ha of winter wheat crop were monitored using the ISARIA on-the-go system and remote sensing using Sentinel-2 multispectral satellite images. The results of spectral measurements of ISARIA vegetation indices (IRMI, IBI) were statistically compared with the values of selected vegetation indices obtained from Sentinel-2 (EVI, GNDVI, NDMI, NDRE, NDVI and NRERI) in order to determine potential hips. Positive correlations were found between the vegetation indices determined by the ISARIA system and indices obtained by multispectral images from Sentinel-2 satellites. The correlations were medium to strong (r = 0.51–0.89). Therefore, it can be stated that both technologies were able to capture a similar trend in the development of vegetation. Furthermore, the influence of climatic conditions on the vegetation indices was analyzed in individual years of the experiment. The values of vegetation indices show significant differences between the individual years. The results of vegetation indices obtained by the analysis of spectral images from Sentinel-2 satellites varied the most. The values of winter wheat yield varied between the individual years. Yield was the highest in 2017 (7.83 t/ha), while the lowest was recorded in 2020 (6.96 t/ha). There was no statistically significant difference between 2018 (7.27 t/ha) and 2019 (7.44 t/ha). With the development of satellite and remote sensing techniques, more and more image data from airborne/satellite sensors have become available. Multi-sensor image fusion seeks to combine information from different images to obtain more inferences than can be derived from a single sensor. In image-based application fields, image fusion has emerged as a promising research area since the end of the last century. The paper presents an overview of recent advances in multi-sensor satellite image fusion. Firstly, the most popular existing fusion algorithms are introduced, with emphasis on their recent improvements. Advances in main applications fields in remote sensing, including object identification, classification, change detection and maneuvering targets tracking, are described. Both advantages and limitations of those applications are then discussed. Recommendations are addressed, including: (1) Improvements of fusion algorithms; (2) Development of "algorithm fusion" methods; (3) Establishment of an automatic quality assessment scheme. Building-damage mapping using remote sensing images plays a critical role in providing quick and accurate information for the first responders after major earthquakes. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in generating post-earthquake building-damage maps automatically using different artificial intelligence (AI)-based frameworks. These frameworks in this domain are promising, yet not reliable for several reasons, including but not limited to the site-specific design of the methods, the lack of transparency in the AI-model, the lack of quality in the labelled image, and the use of irrelevant descriptor features in building the AI-model. Using explainable AI (XAI) can lead us to gain insight into identifying these limitations and therefore, to modify the training dataset and the model accordingly. This paper proposes the use of SHAP (Shapley additive explanation) to interpret the outputs of a multilayer perceptron (MLP)—a machine learning model—and analyse the impact of each feature descriptor included in the model for building-damage assessment to examine the reliability of the model. In this study, a post-event satellite image from the 2018 Palu earthquake was used. The results show that MLP can classify the collapsed and non-collapsed buildings with an overall accuracy of 84% after removing the redundant features. Further, spectral features are found to be more important than texture features in distinguishing the collapsed and non-collapsed buildings. Finally, we argue that constructing an explainable model would help to understand the model's decision to classify the buildings as collapsed and non-collapsed and open avenues to build a transferable AI model. In this paper, an inkjet-printed flexible Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag antenna is proposed for an ultra-high frequency (UHF) sensor application. The proposed tag antenna facilitates a system-level solution for low-cost and faster mass production of RFID passive tag antenna. The tag antenna consists of a modified meander line radiator with a semi-circular shaped feed network. The structure is printed on photo paper using silver nanoparticle conductive ink. The generic design outline, as well as tag antenna performances for several practical application aspects are investigated. The simulated and measured results verify the coverage of universal UHF RFID band with an omnidirectional radiation pattern and a long-read range of 15 ft. There are a large number of studies on geospatial object detection. However, many existing methods only focus on either accuracy or speed. Methods with both fast speed and high accuracy are of great importance in some scenes, like search and rescue, and military information acquisition. In remote sensing images, there are some targets that are small and have few textures and low contrast compared with the background, which impose challenges on object detection. In this paper, we propose an accurate and fast single shot detector (AF-SSD) for high spatial remote sensing imagery to solve these problems. Firstly, we design a lightweight backbone to reduce the number of trainable parameters of the network. In this lightweight backbone, we also use some wide and deep convolutional blocks to extract more semantic information and keep the high detection precision. Secondly, a novel encoding–decoding module is employed to detect small targets accurately. With up-sampling and summation operations, the encoding–decoding module can add strong high-level semantic information to low-level features. Thirdly, we design a cascade structure with spatial and channel attention modules for targets with low contrast (named low-contrast targets) and few textures (named few-texture targets). The spatial attention module can extract long-range features for few-texture targets. By weighting each channel of a feature map, the channel attention module can guide the network to concentrate on easily identifiable features for low-contrast and few-texture targets. The experimental results on the NWPU VHR-10 dataset show that our proposed AF-SSD achieves superior detection performance: parameters 5.7 M, mAP 88.7%, and 0.035 s per image on average on an NVIDIA GTX-1080Ti GPU. Accurate registration is an essential prerequisite for analysis and applications involving remote sensing imagery. It is usually difficult to extract enough matching points for inter-band registration in hyperspectral imagery due to the different spectral responses for land features in different image bands. This is especially true for non-adjacent bands. The inconsistency in geometric distortion caused by topographic relief also makes it inappropriate to use a single affine transformation relationship for the geometric transformation of the entire image. Currently, accurate registration between spectral bands of Zhuhai-1 satellite hyperspectral imagery remains challenging. In this paper, a full-spectrum registration method was proposed to address this problem. The method combines the transfer strategy based on the affine transformation relationship between adjacent spectrums with the differential correction from dense Delaunay triangulation. Firstly, the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) extraction method was used to extract and match feature points of adjacent bands. The RANdom SAmple Consensus (RANSAC) algorithm and the least square method is then used to eliminate mismatching point pairs to obtain fine matching point pairs. Secondly, a dense Delaunay triangulation was constructed based on fine matching point pairs. The affine transformation relation for non-adjacent bands was established for each triangle using the affine transformation relation transfer strategy. Finally, the affine transformation relation was used to perform differential correction for each triangle. Three Zhuhai-1 satellite hyperspectral images covering different terrains were used as experiment data. The evaluation results showed that the adjacent band registration accuracy ranged from 0.2 to 0.6 pixels. The structural similarity measure and cosine similarity measure between non-adjacent bands were both greater than 0.80. Moreover, the full-spectrum registration accuracy was less than 1 pixel. The segmentation of high-resolution (HR) remote sensing images is very important in modern society, especially in the fields of industry, agriculture and urban modelling. Through the neural network, the machine can effectively and accurately extract the surface feature information. However, using the traditional deep learning methods requires plentiful efforts in order to find a robust architecture. In this paper, we introduce a neural network architecture search (NAS) method, called NAS-HRIS, which can automatically search neural network architecture on the dataset. The proposed method embeds a directed acyclic graph (DAG) into the search space and designs the differentiable searching process, which enables it to learn an end-to-end searching rule by using gradient descent optimization. It uses the Gumbel-Max trick to provide an efficient way when drawing samples from a non-continuous probability distribution, and it improves the efficiency of searching and reduces the memory consumption. Compared with other NAS, NAS-HRIS consumes less GPU memory without reducing the accuracy, which corresponds to a large amount of HR remote sensing imagery data. We have carried out experiments on the WHUBuilding dataset and achieved 90.44% MIoU. In order to fully demonstrate the feasibility of the method, we made a new urban Beijing Building dataset, and conducted experiments on satellite images and non-single source images, achieving better results than SegNet, U-Net and Deeplab v3+ models, while the computational complexity of our network architecture is much smaller. Precision agriculture is considered to be a fundamental approach in pursuing a low-input, high-efficiency, and sustainable kind of agriculture when performing site-specific management practices. To achieve this objective, a reliable and updated description of the local status of crops is required. Remote sensing, and in particular satellite-based imagery, proved to be a valuable tool in crop mapping, monitoring, and diseases assessment. However, freely available satellite imagery with low or moderate resolutions showed some limits in specific agricultural applications, e.g., where crops are grown by rows. Indeed, in this framework, the satellite's output could be biased by intra-row covering, giving inaccurate information about crop status. This paper presents a novel satellite imagery refinement framework, based on a deep learning technique which exploits information properly derived from high resolution images acquired by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) airborne multispectral sensors. To train the convolutional neural network, only a single UAV-driven dataset is required, making the proposed approach simple and cost-effective. A vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba (Northern Italy) was chosen as a case study for validation purposes. Refined satellite-driven normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) maps, acquired in four different periods during the vine growing season, were shown to better describe crop status with respect to raw datasets by correlation analysis and ANOVA. In addition, using a K-means based classifier, 3-class vineyard vigor maps were profitably derived from the NDVI maps, which are a valuable tool for growers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The atmospheric correction of satellite images based on radiative transfer calculations is a prerequisite for many remote sensing applications. The software package ATCOR, developed at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is a versatile atmospheric correction software, capable of processing data acquired by many different optical satellite sensors. Based on this well established algorithm, a new Python-based atmospheric correction software has been developed to generate L2A products of Sentinel-2, Landsat-8, and of new space-based hyperspectral sensors such as DESIS (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer) and EnMAP (Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program). This paper outlines the underlying algorithms of PACO, and presents the validation results by comparing L2A products generated from Sentinel-2 L1C images with in situ (AERONET and RadCalNet) data within VNIR-SWIR spectral wavelengths range. Feature-based matching can provide high robust correspondences and it is usually invariant to image scale and rotation. Nevertheless, in remote sensing, the robust feature-matching algorithms often require costly computations for matching dense features extracted from high-resolution satellite images due to that the computational complexity of conventional feature-matching model is O (N 2) . For replacing the conventional feature-matching model, a fast dense (FD) feature-matching model is proposed in this paper. The FD model reduces the computational complexity to linear by splitting the global one-to-one matching into a set of local matchings based on a classic frame-based rectification method. To investigate the possibility of applying the classic frame-based method on cross-track pushbroom images, a feasibility study is given by testing the frame-based method on 2.1 million independent experiments provided by a pushbroom based feature-correspondences simulation platform. Moreover, to improve the stability of the frame-based method, a correspondence-direction-constraint algorithm is proposed for providing the most favourable seed-matches/control-points. The performances of the FD and the conventional models are evaluated on both an automatic feature-matching evaluation platform and real satellite images. The evaluation results show that, for the feature-matching algorithms which have high computational complexity, their running time for matching dense features reduces from hours level to minutes level when they are operated on the FD model.
