This paper presents a tidal current meter that is based on the inertial acceleration principle for offshore infrastructures in deep water. Focusing on the marine installations of the aquaculture industry, we studied the forces of tides at a depth of 15 m by measuring the acceleration. In addition, we used a commercial MEMS triaxial accelerometer to record the acceleration values. A prototype of the tidal measurement unit was developed and tested at a real offshore aquaculture infrastructure in Gran Canaria, which is one of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The proposed tidal measurement unit was used as a recorder to assess the complexity of measuring the frequency of tidal currents in the short (10 min), medium (one day) and long term (one week). The acquired data were studied in detail, in both the time and frequency domains, to determine the frequency of the forces that were involved. Finally, the complexity of the frequency measurements from the captured data was analyzed in terms of sampling ratio and recording duration, from the point of view of using our proposed measurement unit as an ultra-low-power embedded system. The proposed device was tested for more than 180 days using a lithium-ion battery. This working period was three times greater than the best alternative in the literature because of the ultra-low-power design of the on-board embedded system. The measurement accuracy error was lower than 1% and the resolution was 0.01 cm/s for the 0.8 m/s velocity scale. Recent technological developments have led to the production of inexpensive, non-invasive, miniature magneto-inertial sensors, ideal for obtaining sport performance measures during training or competition. This systematic review evaluates current evidence and the future potential of their use in sport performance evaluation. Articles published in English (April 2017) were searched in Web-of-Science, Scopus, Pubmed, and Sport-Discus databases. A keyword search of titles, abstracts and keywords which included studies using accelerometers, gyroscopes and/or magnetometers to analyse sport motor-tasks performed by athletes (excluding risk of injury, physical activity, and energy expenditure) resulted in 2040 papers. Papers and reference list screening led to the selection of 286 studies and 23 reviews. Information on sport, motor-tasks, participants, device characteristics, sensor position and fixing, experimental setting and performance indicators was extracted. The selected papers dealt with motor capacity assessment (51 papers), technique analysis (163), activity classification (19), and physical demands assessment (61). Focus was placed mainly on elite and sub-elite athletes (59%) performing their sport in-field during training (62%) and competition (7%). Measuring movement outdoors created opportunities in winter sports (8%), water sports (16%), team sports (25%), and other outdoor activities (27%). Technical evaluation of swimming performance is an essential factor of elite athletic preparation. Novel methods of analysis, incorporating body worn inertial sensors ( i.e. , Microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS, accelerometers and gyroscopes), have received much attention recently from both research and commercial communities as an alternative to video-based approaches. This technology may allow for improved analysis of stroke mechanics, race performance and energy expenditure, as well as real-time feedback to the coach, potentially enabling more efficient, competitive and quantitative coaching. The aim of this paper is to provide a systematic review of the literature related to the use of inertial sensors for the technical analysis of swimming performance. This paper focuses on providing an evaluation of the accuracy of different feature detection algorithms described in the literature for the analysis of different phases of swimming, specifically starts, turns and free-swimming. The consequences associated with different sensor attachment locations are also considered for both single and multiple sensor configurations. Additional information such as this should help practitioners to select the most appropriate systems and methods for extracting the key performance related parameters that are important to them for analysing their swimmers’ performance and may serve to inform both applied and research practices. In this paper,we share our practical experience gained during the development ofCMOS-MEMS (ComplementaryMetal-Oxide Semiconductor Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) devices in IHP SG25 technology. The experimental prototyping process is illustrated with examples of three CMOS-MEMS chips and starts from rough process exploration and characterization, followed by the definition of the useful MEMS design space to finally reach CMOS-MEMS devices with inertial mass up to 4.3 μg and resonance frequency down to 4.35 kHz. Furthermore, the presented design techniques help to avoid several structural and reliability issues such as layer delamination, device stiction, passivation fracture or device cracking due to stress. In a millimeter wave (mmWave) communication system with transmit/receive (Tx/Rx) beamforming antennas, small variation in device behavior or an environmental change can destroy beam alignment, resulting in power loss in the received signal. In this situation, the beam-tracking technique purely based on the received signal is not effective because both behavioral changes (rotation, displacement) and environmental changes (blockage) result in power loss in the received signal. In this paper, a motion sensor based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) as well as an electrical signal is used for beam tracking to identify the cause of beam error, and an efficient beam-tracking technique is proposed. The motion sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and geo-magnetic sensor are composed of an attitude heading reference system (AHRS) and a zero-velocity detector (ZVD). The AHRS estimates the rotation angle and the ZVD detects whether the device moves. The proposed technique tracks a beam by handling the specific situation depending on the cause of beam error, minimizing the tracking overhead. In this paper, an adaptive, autocovariance-based event detection algorithm is proposed, which can be used with micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometer sensors to build inexpensive and power efficient event detectors. The algorithm works well with low signal-to-noise ratio input signals, and its computational complexity is very low, allowing its utilization on inexpensive low-end embedded sensor devices. The proposed algorithm decreases its energy consumption by lowering its duty cycle, as much as the event to be detected allows it. The performance of the algorithm is tested and compared to the conventional filter-based approach. Gap asymmetry in differential capacitors is the primary source of the zero bias output of force-balanced micro accelerometers. It is also used to evaluate the applicability of differential structures in MEMS manufacturing. Therefore, determining the asymmetry level has considerable significance for the design of MEMS devices. This paper proposes an experimental-theoretical method for predicting gap asymmetry in differential sensing capacitors of micro accelerometers. The method involves three processes: first, bi-directional measurement, which can sharply reduce the influence of the feedback circuit on bias output, is proposed. Experiments are then carried out on a centrifuge to obtain the input and output data of an accelerometer. Second, the analytical input-output relationship of the accelerometer with gap asymmetry and circuit error is theoretically derived. Finally, the prediction methodology combines the measurement results and analytical derivation to identify the asymmetric error of 30 accelerometers fabricated by DRIE. Results indicate that the level of asymmetry induced by fabrication uncertainty is about ±5 × 10-2, and that the absolute error is about ±0.2 µm under a 4 µm gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A bulk micromachined inertial measurement unit (MIMU) is presented in this paper. Three single-axis accelerometers and three single-axis gyroscopes were simultaneously fabricated on a silicon wafer using a bulk micromachining process; the wafer is smaller than one square centimeter. In particular, a global area optimization method based on the relationship between the sensitivity and layout area was proposed to determine the layout configuration of the six sensors. The scale factors of the X/Y-axis accelerometer and Z-axis accelerometer are about 213.3 mV/g and 226.9 mV/g, respectively. The scale factors of the X/Y-axis gyroscope and Z-axis gyroscope are about 2.2 mV/°/s and 10.8 mV/°/s, respectively. The bias stability of the X/Y-axis gyroscope and the Z-axis gyroscope are about 2135 deg/h and 80 deg/h, respectively. Finally, the resolutions of X/Yaxis accelerometers, Z-axis accelerometers, X/Y-axis gyroscopes, and Z-axis gyroscopes are 0.0012 g/ √Hz , 0.0011 g/ √Hz , 0.314 ° /s/ √Hz , and 0.008 ° /s/ √Hz , respectively. The paper deals with performance enhancement of low-cost, consumer-grade inertial sensors realized by means of Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. Focusing their attention on the reduction of bias instability and random walk-driven drift of cost-effective MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes, the authors hereinafter propose a suitable method, based on a redundant configuration and complemented with a proper measurement procedure, to improve the performance of low-cost, consumer-grade MEMS sensors. The performance of the method is assessed by means of an adequate prototype and compared with that assured by a commercial, expensive, tactical-grade MEMS inertial measurement unit, taken as reference. Obtained results highlight the promising reliability and efficacy of the method in estimating position, velocity, and attitude of vehicles; in particular, bias instability and random walk reduction greater than 25% is, in fact, experienced. Moreover, differences as low as 0.025 rad and 0.89 m are obtained when comparing position and attitude estimates provided by the prototype and those granted by the tactical-grade MEMS IMU. This paper presents an output offset minimized capacitance-to-digital interface for a MEMS accelerometer. With a gain-enhanced voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO)-based quantization loop, the interface is able to output a digital signal with improved dynamic range. For optimizing the output offset caused by nonideal factors (e.g., the bond-wire drift), a nested digital chopping feedback loop is embedded in the VCO-based quantization loop. It enables the interface to minimize the output offset without digital filtering and digital-to-analog conversion. The proposed architecture is well suited for dynamic range and offset improvements with low cost. Fabricated with a 0.18 μm Global Foundry (GF) CMOS process, the interface offers a 78 dB dynamic range with 0.4% nonlinearity from a single 2 V supply. With the input referred offset up to 1.3 pF, the offset cancellation loop keeps the DC output offset within 40 mV. The power dissipation is 6.5 mW with a bandwidth of 4 kHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The EM- Σ Δ (electromechanical sigma-delta) approach is a concise and efficient way to realize the digital interface for micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers. However, including a fixed MEMS element makes the synthesizing of the EM- Σ Δ loop an intricate problem. The loop parameters of EM- Σ Δ can not be directly mapped from existing electrical Σ Δ modulator, and the synthesizing problem relies an experience-dependent trail-and-error procedure. In this paper, we provide a new point of view to consider the EM- Σ Δ loop. The EM- Σ Δ loop is analyzed in detail from aspects of the signal loop, displacement modulation path and digital quantization loop. By taking a separate consideration of the signal loop and quantization noise loop, the design strategy is made clear and straightforward. On this basis, a discrete-time PID (proportional integral differential) loop compensator is introduced which enhances the in-band loop gain and suppresses the displacement modulation path, and hence, achieves better performance in system linearity and stability. A fifth-order EM- Σ Δ accelerometer system was designed and fabricated using 0.35 μ m CMOS-BCD technology. Based on proposed architecture and synthesizing procedure, the design effort was saved, and the in-band performance, linearity and stability were improved. Several devices and measurement approaches have recently been developed to perform ballistocardiogram (BCG) and seismocardiogram (SCG) measurements. The development of a wireless acquisition system (hardware and software), incorporating a novel high-resolution micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) accelerometer for SCG and BCG signals acquisition and data treatment is presented in this paper. A small accelerometer, with a sensitivity of up to 0.164 µs/µg and a noise density below 6.5 µg/ Hz is presented and used in a wireless acquisition system for BCG and SCG measurement applications. The wireless acquisition system also incorporates electrocardiogram (ECG) signals acquisition, and the developed software enables the real-time acquisition and visualization of SCG and ECG signals (sensor positioned on chest). It then calculates metrics related to cardiac performance as well as the correlation of data from previously performed sessions with echocardiogram (ECHO) parameters. A preliminarily clinical study of over 22 subjects (including healthy subjects and cardiovascular patients) was performed to test the capability of the developed system. Data correlation between this measurement system and echocardiogram exams is also performed. The high resolution of the MEMS accelerometer used provides a better signal for SCG wave recognition, enabling a more consistent study of the diagnostic capability of this technique in clinical analysis. Low-cost MEMS accelerometers have the potential to be used in a number of tilt-based monitoring applications but have the disadvantage of being very sensitive to temperature variation (thermal drift). In this paper, we analyze the thermal behavior of a low-cost sensor in the range −10 to +45 °C in order to provide a simple compensation strategy to mitigate this problem. For sensor analysis, we have developed a miniaturized thermal chamber, which was mounted on a tilting device to account for tilt angle variation. The obtained raw data were used to construct low degree polynomial equations that by relating the measurement error induced by thermal drift (i.e., acceleration residuals) to temperature and inclination (of each specific axis), can be used for thermal compensation. To validate our compensation strategy, we performed a field monitoring test and evaluated the compensation performance by calculating RMS errors before and after correction. After compensation, the RMS errors calculated for both the X and Y axes decreased by 96%, indicating the potential of using a simple set of equations to solve common drawbacks that currently make low-cost MEMS sensors unsuitable for tilt-based monitoring applications.
