Internet of Things (IoT) architectures generally focus on providing consistent performance and reliable communications. The convergence of IoT, edge, fog, and cloud aims to improve the quality of service of applications, which does not typically emphasize energy efficiency. Considering energy in IoT architectures would reduce the energy impact from billions of IoT devices. The research presented in this paper proposes an optimization framework that considers energy consumption of nodes when selecting a node for processing an IoT request in edge-fog-cloud layered architecture. The IoT use cases considered in this paper include smart grid, autonomous vehicles, and eHealth. The proposed framework is evaluated using CPLEX simulations. The results provide insights into mechanisms that can be used to select nodes energy-efficiently whilst meeting the application requirements and other network constraints in multi-layered IoT architectures. The introduction of fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks leads to an increase in energy consumption and higher operational costs for mobile network operators (MNOs). Consequently, the optimization of 5G networks' energy efficiency is crucial, both in terms of reducing MNO costs and in terms of the negative environmental impact. However, many aspects of the 5G mobile network technology itself have been standardized, including the 5G network slicing concept. This enables the creation of multiple independent logical 5G networks within the same physical infrastructure. Since the only necessary resources in 5G networks need to be used for the realization of a specific 5G network slice, the question of whether the implementation of 5G network slicing can contribute to the improvement of 5G and future sixth-generation networks' energy efficiency arises. To tackle this question, this review paper analyzes 5G network slicing and the energy demand of different network slicing use cases and mobile virtual network operator realizations based on network slicing. The paper also overviews standardized key performance indicators for the assessment of 5G network slices' energy efficiency and discusses energy efficiency in 5G network slicing lifecycle management. In particular, to show how efficient network slicing can optimize the energy consumption of 5G networks, versatile 5G network slicing use case scenarios, approaches, and resource allocation concepts in the space, time, and frequency domains have been discussed, including artificial intelligence-based implementations of network slicing. The results of the comprehensive discussion indicate that the different implementations and approaches to network slicing pave the way for possible further reductions in 5G MNO energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions in the future. Underwater long-endurance platforms are crucial for continuous oceanic observation, allowing for sustained data collection from a multitude of sensors deployed across diverse underwater environments. They extend mission durations, reduce maintenance needs, and significantly improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of oceanographic research endeavors. This paper investigates the closed-loop depth control of actuation systems employed in underwater vehicles, focusing on the energy consumption of two different mechanisms: variable buoyancy and propeller actuated devices. Using a prototype previously developed by the authors, this paper presents a detailed model of the vehicle using both actuation solutions. The proposed model, although being a linear-based one, accounts for several nonlinearities that are present such as saturations, sensor quantization, and the actuator brake model. Also, it allows a simple estimation of the energy consumption of both actuation solutions. Based on the developed models, this study then explores the intricate interplay between energy consumption and control accuracy. To this end, several PID-based controllers are developed and tested in simulation. These controllers are used to evaluate the dynamic response and power requirements of variable buoyancy systems and propeller actuated devices under various operational conditions. Our findings contribute to the optimization of closed-loop depth control strategies, offering insights into the trade-offs between energy efficiency and system effectiveness in diverse underwater applications. This paper presents the design of and transient time simulations for a four-pole magnetic bearing with permanent magnets. The usage of permanent magnets reduces the consumption of electric energy in comparison to a traditional active magnetic bearing. Permanent magnets are installed in the yoke of the stator core to limit the cross-coupling of the magnetic flux generated by the windings. The first part of this paper presents the design of the magnetic bearing and its finite-element model, while the second part describes the field-circuit indirectly coupled finite-element model for the transient time simulation. The presented simulation model was used to calculate the transient response for the rotor lifting from the starting position, the step change in the rotor position and the change in the rotor position under an external impact force applied along the y-axis. In the era of continuous development in Internet of Things (IoT) technology, smart services are penetrating various facets of societal life, leading to a growing demand for interconnected devices. Many contemporary devices are no longer mere data producers but also consumers of data. As a result, massive amounts of data are transmitted to the cloud, but the latency generated in edge-to-cloud communication is unacceptable for many tasks. In response to this, this paper introduces a novel contribution—a layered computing network built on the principles of fog computing, accompanied by a newly devised algorithm designed to optimize user tasks and allocate computing resources within rechargeable networks. The proposed algorithm, a synergy of Lyapunov-based, dynamic Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), allows for predictive task allocation. The fog servers dynamically train LSTM networks to effectively forecast the data features of user tasks, facilitating proper unload decisions based on task priorities. In response to the challenge of slower hardware upgrades in edge devices compared to user demands, the algorithm optimizes the utilization of low-power devices and addresses performance limitations. Additionally, this paper considers the unique characteristics of rechargeable networks, where computing nodes acquire energy through charging. Utilizing Lyapunov functions for dynamic resource control enables nodes with abundant resources to maximize their potential, significantly reducing energy consumption and enhancing overall performance. The simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm surpasses traditional methods in terms of energy efficiency and resource allocation optimization. Despite the limitations of prediction accuracy in Fog Servers (FS), the proposed results significantly promote overall performance. This paper presents a method based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) for optimizing the power settings of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs) along a given trajectory in order to minimize fuel consumption and maximize autonomy during surveillance missions. UAVs are widely used in surveillance missions and their autonomy is a key characteristic that contributes to their success. Providing a way to reduce fuel consumption and increase autonomy provides a significant advantage during the mission. The method proposed in this paper included path smoothing techniques in 3D for fixed-wing UAVs based on circular arcs that overfly the waypoints, an essential feature in a surveillance mission. It used the equations of motions and the decomposition of Newton's equation to compute the fuel consumption based on a given power setting. The proposed method used PSO to compute optimized power settings while respecting the absolute physical constraints, such as the load factor, the lift coefficient, the maximum speed and the maximum amount of fuel onboard. Finally, the method was parallelized on a multicore processor to accelerate the computation and provide fast optimization of the power settings in case the trajectory was changed in flight by the operator. Our results showed that the proposed PSO was able to reduce fuel consumption by up to 25% in the trajectories tested and the parallel implementation provided a speedup of 21.67× compared to a sequential implementation on the CPU. In the context of the rapid development of the Internet of Vehicles, virtual reality, automatic driving and the industrial Internet, the terminal devices in the network show explosive growth. As a result, more and more information is generated from the edge of the network, which makes the data throughput increase dramatically in the mobile communication network. As the key technology of the fifth-generation mobile communication network, mobile edge caching technology which caches popular data to the edge server deployed at the edge of the network avoids the data transmission delay of the backhaul link and the occurrence of network congestion. With the growing scale of the network, distributing hot data from cloud servers to edge servers will generate huge energy consumption. To realize the green and sustainable development of the communication industry and reduce the energy consumption of distribution of data that needs to be cached in edge servers, we make the first attempt to propose and solve the problem of edge caching data distribution with minimum energy consumption (ECDDMEC) in this paper. First, we model and formulate the problem as a constrained optimization problem and then prove its NP-hardness. Subsequently, we design a greedy algorithm with computational complexity of O (n 2) to solve the problem approximately. Experimental results show that compared with the distribution strategy of each edge server directly requesting data from the cloud server, the strategy obtained by the algorithm can significantly reduce the energy consumption of data distribution. Energy efficiency is an important issue in industry, especially with the ever-increasing consumption of electrical energy. The power quality and the traceability of metering devices are essential when integrating energy metering systems for energy efficiency. This management requires an understanding of electrical current events such as pulse and transient currents. Current transducers are widely used to measure these electrical current events up to a few megahertz. Their use makes it possible to measure not only the main current flowing through the transducer, but also the bypass current that affects electrical equipment. Calibration of these sensors up to a few megahertz then becomes an essential step. Currently, most calibration methods are limited to 100 kHz frequency for a current of 10 A. This paper presents an improvement of a traceable calibration methodology for current transducers up to 10 A and 1 MHz, thus increasing, by 10 times, the current level for such high frequency applications. This calibration methodology is based on a metrological traceability chain (uninterrupted link to the International System of Units) with respect to a calculable current shunt and is currently the only traceable method for calibrating current transducers at 10 A and up to 1 MHz. The advancement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enables early detection of numerous disasters. Efforts have been made to automate the monitoring of data from UAVs, with machine learning methods recently attracting significant interest. These solutions often face challenges with high computational costs and energy usage. Conventionally, data from UAVs are processed using cloud computing, where they are sent to the cloud for analysis. However, this method might not meet the real-time needs of disaster relief scenarios. In contrast, edge computing provides real-time processing at the site but still struggles with computational and energy efficiency issues. To overcome these obstacles and enhance resource utilization, this paper presents a convolutional neural network (CNN) model with an early exit mechanism designed for fire detection in UAVs. This model is implemented using TSMC 40 nm CMOS technology, which aids in hardware acceleration. Notably, the neural network has a modest parameter count of 11.2 k. In the hardware computation part, the CNN circuit completes fire detection in approximately 230,000 cycles. Power-gating techniques are also used to turn off inactive memory, contributing to reduced power consumption. The experimental results show that this neural network reaches a maximum accuracy of 81.49% in the hardware implementation stage. The rapid advancement in AI requires efficient accelerators for training on edge devices, which often face challenges related to the high hardware costs of floating-point arithmetic operations. To tackle these problems, efficient floating-point formats inspired by block floating-point (BFP), such as Microsoft Floating Point (MSFP) and FlexBlock (FB), are emerging. However, they have limited dynamic range and precision for the smaller magnitude values within a block due to the shared exponent. This limits the BFP's ability to train deep neural networks (DNNs) with diverse datasets. This paper introduces the hybrid precision (HPFP) selection algorithms, designed to systematically reduce precision and implement hybrid precision strategies, thereby balancing layer-wise arithmetic operations and data path precision to address the shortcomings of traditional floating-point formats. Reducing the data bit width with HPFP allows more read/write operations from memory per cycle, thereby decreasing off-chip data access and the size of on-chip memories. Unlike traditional reduced precision formats that use BFP for calculating partial sums and accumulating those partial sums in 32-bit Floating Point (FP32), HPFP leads to significant hardware savings by performing all multiply and accumulate operations in reduced floating-point format. For evaluation, two training accelerators for the YOLOv2-Tiny model were developed, employing distinct mixed precision strategies, and their performance was benchmarked against an accelerator utilizing a conventional brain floating point of 16 bits (Bfloat16). The HPFP selection, employing 10 bits for the data path of all layers and for the arithmetic of layers requiring low precision, along with 12 bits for layers requiring higher precision, results in a 49.4% reduction in energy consumption and a 37.5% decrease in memory access. This is achieved with only a marginal mean Average Precision (mAP) degradation of 0.8% when compared to an accelerator based on Bfloat16. This comparison demonstrates that the proposed accelerator based on HPFP can be an efficient approach to designing compact and low-power accelerators without sacrificing accuracy. Low-power embedded systems have been widely used in a variety of applications, allowing devices to efficiently collect and exchange data while minimizing energy consumption. However, the lack of extensive maintenance procedures designed specifically for low-power systems, coupled with constraints on anticipating faults and monitoring capacities, presents notable difficulties and intricacies in identifying failures and customized reaction mechanisms. The proposed approach seeks to address the gaps in current resource management frameworks and maintenance protocols for low-power embedded systems. Furthermore, this paper offers a trilateral framework that provides periodic prescriptions to stakeholders, a periodic control mechanism for automated actions and messages to prevent breakdowns, and a backup AI malfunction detection module to prevent the system from accessing any stress points. To evaluate the AI malfunction detection module approach, three novel autonomous embedded systems based on different ARM Cortex cores have been specifically designed and developed. Real-life results obtained from the testing of the proposed AI malfunction detection module in the developed embedded systems demonstrated outstanding performance, with metrics consistently exceeding 98%. The capacity to update firmware is a vital component in the lifecycle of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, even those with restricted hardware resources. This paper explores the best way to wirelessly (Over The Air, OTA) update low-end IoT nodes with difficult access, combining the use of unicast and broadcast communications. The devices under consideration correspond to a recent industrial IoT project that focuses on the installation of intelligent lighting systems within ATEX (potentially explosive atmospheres) zones, connected via LoRa to a gateway. As energy consumption is not limited in this use case, the main figure of merit is the total time required for updating a project. Therefore, the objective is to deliver all the fragments of the firmware to each and all the nodes in a safe way, in the least amount of time. Three different methods, combining unicast and broadcast transmissions in different ways, are explored analytically, with the aim of obtaining the expected update time. The methods are also tested via extensive simulations, modifying different parameters such as the size of the scenario, the number of bytes of each firmware chunk, the number of nodes, and the number of initial broadcast rounds. The simulations show that the update time of a project can be significant, considering the limitations posed by regulations, in terms of the percentage of airtime consumption. However, significant time reductions can be achieved by using the proper method: in some cases, when the number of nodes is high, the update time can be reduced by two orders of magnitude if the correct method is chosen. Moreover, one of the proposed methods is implemented using actual hardware. This real implementation is used to perform firmware update experiments in a lab environment. Overall, the article illustrates the advantage of broadcast approaches in this kind of technology, in which the transmission rate is constant despite the distance between the gateway and the node. However, the advantage of these broadcast methods with respect to the unicast one could be mitigated if the nodes do not run exactly the same firmware version, since the control of the broadcast update would be more difficult and the total update time would increase. Near-surface oceanic turbulence plays an important role in the exchange of mass, momentum, and energy between the atmosphere and the ocean. The climate modifying the air–sea CO 2 transfer rate varies linearly with the surface turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate to the 1 / 4 power in a range of systems with different types of forcing, such as coastal oceans, river estuaries, large tidal freshwater rivers, and oceans. In the first part of this paper, we present a numerical study of the near-surface turbulent kinetic energy spectra deduced from a direct numerical simulation (DNS) compared to turbulent kinetic energy spectra deduced from idealized infrared (IR) images. The DNS temperature fields served as a surrogate for IR images from which we have calculated the underlying kinetic energy spectra. Despite the near-surface flow region being highly anisotropic, we demonstrated that modeled isotropic and homogeneous turbulence spectra can serve as an approximation to observed near-surface spectra within the inertial and dissipation ranges. The second part of this paper validates our numerical observations in a laboratory experiment. In this experiment, we compared the turbulent kinetic energy spectra near the surface, as measured using a submerged shear sensor with the spectra derived from infrared images collected from above the surface. The energy dissipation measured by the shear sensor was found to be within 20% of the dissipation value derived from the IR images. Numerically and experimentally, we have demonstrated that IR-based and remote measurement techniques of the aquatic near surface offer a potentially accurate and non-invasive way to measure near-surface turbulence, which is needed by the community to improve models of oceanic air–sea heat, momentum, and gas fluxes. In the context of area coverage tasks in three-dimensional space, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) clusters face challenges such as uneven task assignment, low task efficiency, and high energy consumption. This paper proposes an efficient mission planning strategy for UAV clusters in area coverage tasks. First, the area coverage search task is analyzed, and the coverage scheme of the task area is determined. Based on this, the cluster task area is divided into subareas. Then, for the UAV cluster task allocation problem, a step-by-step solution is proposed. Afterward, an improved fuzzy C-clustering algorithm is used to determine the UAV task area. Furthermore, an optimized particle swarm hybrid ant colony (PSOHAC) algorithm is proposed to plan the UAV cluster task path. Finally, the feasibility and superiority of the proposed scheme and improved algorithm are verified by simulation experiments. The simulation results show that the proposed method achieves full coverage of the task area and efficiently completes the task allocation of the UAV cluster. Compared with related comparison algorithms, the method proposed in this paper can achieve a maximum improvement of 21.9% in balanced energy consumption efficiency for UAV cluster task search planning, and the energy efficiency of the UAV cluster can be improved by up to 7.9%. This paper proposes an energy-efficient multi-level sleep mode control for periodic transmission (MSC-PUT) in private fifth-generation (5G) networks. In general, private 5G networks meet IIoT requirements but face rising energy consumption due to dense base station (BS) deployment, particularly impacting operating expenses (OPEX). An approach of BS sleep mode has been studied to reduce energy consumption, but there has been insufficient consideration for the periodic uplink transmission of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices. Additionally, 5G New Reno's synchronization signal interval limits the effectiveness of the deepest sleep mode in reducing BS energy consumption. By addressing this issue, the aim of this paper is to propose an energy-efficient multi-level sleep mode control for periodic uplink transmission to improve the energy efficiency of BSs. In advance, we develop an energy-efficient model that considers the trade-off between throughput impairment caused by increased latency and energy saving by sleep mode operation for IIoT's periodic uplink transmission. Then, we propose an approach based on proximal policy optimization (PPO) to determine the deep sleep mode of BSs, considering throughput impairment and energy efficiency. Our simulation results verify the proposed MSC-PUT algorithm's effectiveness in terms of throughput, energy saving, and energy efficiency. Specifically, we verify that our proposed MSC-PUT enhances energy efficiency by nearly 27.5 % when compared to conventional multi-level sleep operation and consumes less energy at 75.21 % of the energy consumed by the conventional method while incurring a throughput impairment of nearly 4.2 % . NB-Fi (Narrow Band Fidelity) is a promising protocol for low-power wide-area networks. NB-Fi networks use license-exempt Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands and, thus, NB-Fi devices can work in two modes: with and without Listen Before Talk (LBT). This paper compares these modes with different implementations of LBT in terms of packet loss rate (PLR), delay, energy consumption, and throughput. Interestingly, in some scenarios, the results contradict expectations from the classic papers on channel access because of the peculiarities of the NB-Fi technology. These contradictions are explained in the paper. The results show that LBT can significantly improve all the considered performance indicators when the network load exceeds 40 packets per second. With extensive simulation, we show that in a small NB-Fi network, the optimal PLR, delay, and energy consumption are obtained with the implementation of LBT that corresponds to non-persistent CSMA. In a large NB-Fi network, where some devices can be hidden from others, the best strategy to improve PLR, delay, throughput, and energy consumption is to use the implementation of LBT that corresponds to p-persistent CSMA. This paper presents a shock detection device for packages in the supply chain. The primary purpose is to identify package damage during storage, delivery, and handling. Additionally, products are likely to be damaged if dropped from a certain height, which sometimes does not appear on the package. By continuously measuring package vibrations and detecting shocks in the supply chain, consumers can gain an insight into the state of the product upon delivery. This paper presents the Smart Sticker implementation for ultra-low-power shock detection in the supply chain. The overall energy consumption must be kept as low as possible while continuously sensing the presence of shock to ensure that the Smart Sticker's battery lasts as long as possible. The Smart Sticker functions in three modes to meet the established constraints: low-power, active, and data transfer mode. While detecting the shock, the low-power mode uses the least amount of energy needed. If the shock exceeds the threshold, the Smart Sticker enters active mode, stores the detected g force value in memory, and then switches back to low-power mode. Finally, employing Near Field Communication (NFC) and energy harvesting, the data transfer mode allows the consumer to read the recorded data. The results show that the Smart Sticker for shock detection performs according to set requirements and successfully monitors and detects shock for packages in the supply chain. This paper presents an innovative approach to the integration of thermoelectric microgenerators (μTEGs) based on thick-film thermopiles of planar constantan–silver (CuNi-Ag) and calcium cobaltite oxide–silver (Ca3Co4O9-Ag) thick-film thermopiles with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The goal was to consider using the TEG for an active or semi-passive RFID tag. The proposed implementation would allow the communication distance to be increased or even operated without changing batteries. This article discusses the principles of planar thermoelectric microgenerators (μTEGs), focusing on their ability to convert the temperature difference into electrical energy. The concept of integration with active or semi-passive tags is presented, as well as the results of energy efficiency tests, considering various environmental conditions. On the basis of the measurements, the parameters of thermopiles consisting of more thermocouples were simulated to provide the required voltage and power for cooperation with RFID tags. The conclusions of the research indicate promising prospects for the integration of planar thermoelectric microgenerators with RFID technology, opening the way to more sustainable and efficient monitoring and identification systems. The fast development of the sensors in the wireless sensor networks (WSN) brings a big challenge of low energy consumption requirements, and Peer-to-peer (P2P) communication becomes the important way to break this bottleneck. However, the interference caused by different sensors sharing the spectrum and the power limitations seriously constrains the improvement of WSN. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a deep reinforcement learning-based energy consumption optimization for P2P communication in WSN. Specifically, P2P sensors (PUs) are considered agents to share the spectrum of authorized sensors (AUs). An authorized sensor has permission to access specific data or systems, while a P2P sensor directly communicates with other sensors without needing a central server. One involves permission, the other is direct communication between sensors. Each agent can control the power and select the resources to avoid interference. Moreover, we use a double deep Q network (DDQN) algorithm to help the agent learn more detailed features of the interference. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can obtain a higher performance than the deep Q network scheme and the traditional algorithm, which can effectively lower the energy consumption for P2P communication in WSN. It is well known that buildings have a sizeable energy and environmental footprint. In particular, in environments like university campuses, the occupants as well as occupancy in shared spaces varies over time. Systems for cooling in such environments that are centrally controlled are typically threshold driven and do not account for occupant feedback and thus are often relying on a reactive approach (fix after identifying problems). Therefore, having a fixed thermal operating set point may not be optimal in such cases—both from an occupant comfort and well-being as well as an energy efficiency perspective. To address this issue, a study was conducted which involved development and deployment of an experimental Internet of Things (IoT) prototype system and an Android application that facilitated people engagement on a university campus located in the UAE which typically exhibits hot climatic conditions. This paper showcases data driven insights obtained from this study, and in particular, how to achieve a balance between the conflicting goals of improving occupant comfort and energy efficiency. Findings from this study underscore the need for regular reassessments and adaptation. The proposed solution is low cost and easy to deploy and has the potential to reap significant savings through a reduction in energy consumption with estimates indicating around 50–100 kWh/day of savings per building and the resulting environmental impact. These findings would appeal to stakeholders who are keen to improve energy efficiency and reduce their operating expenses and environmental footprint in such climatic conditions. Many concepts for future generations of wireless communication systems use coherent processing of signals from many distributed antennas. The aim is to improve communication reliability, capacity, and energy efficiency and provide possibilities for new applications through integrated communication and sensing. The large bandwidths available in the higher bands have inspired much work regarding sensing in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) and sub-THz bands; however, the sub-6 GHz cellular bands will still be the main provider of wide cellular coverage due to the more favorable propagation conditions. In this paper, we present a measurement system and results of sub-6 GHz distributed multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) measurements performed in an industrial environment. From the measurements, we evaluated the diversity for both large-scale and small-scale fading and characterized the link reliability. We also analyzed the possibility of multistatic sensing and positioning of users in the environment, with the initial results showing a mean-square error below 20  c m on the estimated position. In this paper, we propose an improved clustering algorithm for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that aims to increase network lifetime and efficiency. We introduce an enhanced fuzzy spider monkey optimization technique and a hidden Markov model-based clustering algorithm for selecting cluster heads. Our approach considers factors such as network cluster head energy, cluster head density, and cluster head position. We also enhance the energy-efficient routing strategy for connecting cluster heads to the base station. Additionally, we introduce a polling control method to improve network performance while maintaining energy efficiency during steady transmission periods. Organizations managing high-performance computing systems face a multitude of challenges, including overarching concerns such as overall energy consumption, microprocessor clock frequency limitations, and the escalating costs associated with chip production. Evidently, processor speeds have plateaued over the last decade, persisting within the range of 2 GHz to 5 GHz. Scholars assert that brain-inspired computing holds substantial promise for mitigating these challenges. The spiking neural network (SNN) particularly stands out for its commendable power efficiency when juxtaposed with conventional design paradigms. Nevertheless, our scrutiny has brought to light several pivotal challenges impeding the seamless implementation of large-scale neural networks (NNs) on silicon. These challenges encompass the absence of automated tools, the need for multifaceted domain expertise, and the inadequacy of existing algorithms to efficiently partition and place extensive SNN computations onto hardware infrastructure. In this paper, we posit the development of an automated tool flow capable of transmuting any NN into an SNN. This undertaking involves the creation of a novel graph-partitioning algorithm designed to strategically place SNNs on a network-on-chip (NoC), thereby paving the way for future energy-efficient and high-performance computing paradigms. The presented methodology showcases its effectiveness by successfully transforming ANN architectures into SNNs with a marginal average error penalty of merely 2.65%. The proposed graph-partitioning algorithm enables a 14.22% decrease in inter-synaptic communication and an 87.58% reduction in intra-synaptic communication, on average, underscoring the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in optimizing NN communication pathways. Compared to a baseline graph-partitioning algorithm, the proposed approach exhibits an average decrease of 79.74% in latency and a 14.67% reduction in energy consumption. Fifth Generation (5G) mobile networks introduce the concept of slicing to ensure isolation among the various supported heterogeneous services. The User Equipment (UE) can be connected to multiple slices simultaneously. Additionally, the notion of a Bandwidth Part (BWP) was also instigated to reduce power consumption. A BWP is a small chunk of the bandwidth scanned by the UE to retrieve its service data. Therefore, a UE connected to multiple services can be configured with multiple BWPs each associated with a given service. Such UEs find themselves scanning multiple BWPs, which can be time consuming and highly energy intensive. Hence, it is paramount to study the appropriate choice of the BWP configuration from an energy-efficiency perspective for multi-slice users depending on their battery level. In this paper, two energy-efficient BWP selection solutions are proposed for users connected to multiple slices. The first solution is based on a centralized approach where UEs are stirred optimally to the best BWP configuration, while the second solution relies on a user-centric distributed approach using non-cooperative game theory. The proposed schemes take into account the users' battery level and their sojourn time in the network as well as the scanned BWP size. Both solutions are compared with one another and against the legacy solution. Indoor localization of a mobile target represents a prominent application within wireless sensor network (WSN), showcasing significant values and scientific interest. Interference, obstacles, and energy consumption are critical challenges for indoor applications and battery replacements. A proposed tracking system deals with several factors such as latency, energy consumption, and accuracy presenting an innovative solution for the mobile localization application. In this paper, a novel algorithm introduces a self-localization algorithm for mobile targets using the wake-up media access control (MAC) protocol. The developed tracking application is based on the trilateration technique with received signal strength indication (RSSI) measurements. Simulations are implemented in the objective modular network testbed in C++ (OMNeT++) discrete event simulator using the C++ programming language, and the RSSI values introduced are based on real indoor measurements. In addition, a determination approach for finding the optimal parameters of RSSI is assigned to implement for the simulation parameters. Simulation results show a significant reduction in power consumption and exceptional accuracy, with an average error of 1.91 m in 90% of cases. This paper introduces an efficient barrier model for enhancing smart building surveillance in harsh environment with thin walls and structures. After the main research problem of minimizing the total number of wall-recognition surveillance barriers, we propose two distinct algorithms, Centralized Node Deployment and Adaptation Node Deployment, which are designed to address the challenge by strategic placement of surveillance nodes within the smart building. The Centralized Node Deployment aligns nodes along the thin walls, ensuring consistent communication coverage and effectively countering potential disruptions. Conversely, the Adaptation Node Deployment begins with random node placement, which adapts over time to ensure efficient communication across the building. The novelty of this work is in designing a novel barrier system to achieve energy efficiency and reinforced surveillance in a thin-wall environment. Instead of a real environment, we use an ad hoc server for simulations with various scenarios and parameters. Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) are critical to a range of applications from oceanographic data collection to submarine surveillance. In these networks, efficient energy management is critical due to the limited power resources of underwater sensors. The LEACH protocol, a popular cluster-based protocol, has been widely used in UASNs to minimize energy consumption. Despite its widespread use, the conventional LEACH protocol faces challenges such as an unoptimized cluster number and low transmission efficiency, which hinder its performance. This paper proposes an improved LEACH protocol for cluster-based UASNs, where the cluster number is optimized with an underwater energy propagation model to reduce energy consumption, and a transmission scheduling algorithm is also employed to achieve conflict-free parallel data transmission. Replication computing is introduced to the LEACH protocol to reduce the signaling in the clustering and data transmission phases. Wireless sensor network (WSN) underpinning the smart-grid Internet of Things (SG-IoT) has been a popular research topic in recent years due to its great potential for enabling a wide range of important applications. However, the energy consumption (EC) characteristic of sensor nodes is a key factor that affects the operational performance (e.g., lifetime of sensors) and the total cost of ownership of WSNs. In this paper, to find the modulation techniques suitable for WSNs, we investigate the EC characteristic of continuous phase modulation (CPM), which is an attractive modulation scheme candidate for WSNs because of its constant envelope property. We first develop an EC model for the sensor nodes of WSNs by considering the circuits and a typical communication protocol that relies on automatic repeat request (ARQ)-based retransmissions to ensure successful data delivery. Then, we use this model to analyze the EC characteristic of CPM under various configurations of modulation parameters. Furthermore, we compare the EC characteristic of CPM with that of other representative modulation schemes, such as offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), which are commonly used in communication protocols of WSNs. Our analysis and simulation results provide insights into the EC characteristics of multiple modulation schemes in the context of WSNs; thus, they are beneficial for designing energy-efficient SG-IoT in the beyond-5G (B5G) and the 6G era. Massive MIMO networks are a promising technology for achieving ultra-high capacity and meeting future wireless service demand. Massive MIMO networks, on the other hand, consume intensive energy. As a result, energy-efficient operation of massive MMO networks became a requirement rather than a luxury. Many NP-hard concavity search algorithms for optimal base station switching on-off scheme have been developed. This paper demonstrates the formulation of massive MIMO networks energy efficiency as a constrained variational problem. Our proposed method solution's uniqueness and boundedness are demonstrated and proven. The developed system is a total energy optimization problem formulation. Furthermore, the order in which the base stations are switched on and off is specified for minimal handover overhead signaling and fair user capacity sharing. With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), the number of devices will also increase tremendously. However, we need more wireless communication resources. It has been shown in the literature that non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) offers high multiplexing gains due to the simultaneous transfer of signals, and massive multiple-input–multiple-outputs (mMIMOs) offer high spectrum efficiency due to the high antenna gain and high multiplexing gains. Therefore, a downlink mMIMO NOMA cooperative system is considered in this paper. The users at the cell edge in 5G cellular system generally suffer from poor signal quality as they are far away from the BS and expend high battery power to decode the signals superimposed through NOMA. Thus, this paper uses a cooperative relay system and proposes the mMIMO NOMA double-mode model to reduce battery expenditure and increase the cell edge user's energy efficiency and sum rate. In the mMIMO NOMA double-mode model, two modes of operation are defined. Depending on the relay's battery level, these modes are chosen to utilize the system's energy efficiency. Comprehensive numerical results show the improvement in the proposed system's average sum rate and average energy efficiency compared with a conventional system. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising technology to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. However, if there are many obstacles between the RIS and users, a single RIS may not provide sufficient performance. For this reason, a double RIS-aided communication system is proposed in this paper. However, this system also has a problem: the signal is attenuated three times due to the three channels created by the double RIS. To overcome these attenuations, an active RIS is proposed in this paper. An active RIS is almost the same as a conventional RIS, except for the included amplifier. Comprehensively, the proposed system overcomes various obstacles and attenuations. In this paper, an active RIS is applied to the second RIS. To reduce the power consumption of active elements, a partially active RIS is applied. To optimize the RIS elements, the sum of the covariance matrix is found by using channels related to each RIS, and the right singular vector is exploited using singular value decomposition for the sum of the covariance matrix. Then, the singular value of the sum of the covariance value is checked to determine which element is the active element. Simulation results show that the proposed system has better sum rate performance compared to a single RIS system. Although it has a lower sum rate performance compared to a double RIS with fully active elements, the proposed system will be more attractive in the future because it has much better energy efficiency. Sensor networks, as a special subtype of wireless networks, consist of sets of wirelessly connected sensor nodes often placed in hard-to-reach environments. Therefore, it is expected that sensor nodes will not be powered from the power grid. Instead, sensor nodes have their own power sources, the replacement of which is often impractical and requires additional costs, so it is necessary to ensure minimum energy consumption. For that reason, the energy efficiency of wireless sensor networks used for monitoring environmental parameters is essential, especially in remote networking scenarios. In this paper, an overview of the latest research progress on wireless sensor networks based on LoRa was provided. Furthermore, analyses of energy consumption of sensor nodes used in agriculture to observe environmental parameters were conducted using the results of real measurements in the field, as well as simulations carried out based on collected data about real equipment. Optimization methods of energy consumption, in terms of choosing the appropriate data collection processes from the conducted field measurements, as well as the settings of network radio parameters imitating real conditions used in conducted simulations were highlighted. In the analyses, special emphasis was placed on choosing the optimal packet size. Unlike in other papers analyzing energy efficiency of LoRa communication, in this paper, it was proven that the adjustment of the transmission speed to the actual size of the packet is important for better energy efficiency of communication and that it can reduce energy consumption considerably. Moreover, in the paper, the contents of a packet that can be used in precision agriculture is suggested in order to prove that the 6-bit packet is sufficient for energy-efficient collection of parameters from the environment, in contrast to the 11-bit packets used in standard commercially available equipment. This paper presents a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithm to address the scheduling and routing problems of multiple automated guided vehicles (AGVs), with the goal of minimizing overall energy consumption. The proposed algorithm is developed based on the multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) algorithm, with modifications made to the action and state space to fit the setting of AGV activities. While previous studies overlooked the energy efficiency of AGVs, this paper develops a well-designed reward function that helps to optimize the overall energy consumption required to fulfill all tasks. Moreover, we incorporate the e-greedy exploration strategy into the proposed algorithm to balance exploration and exploitation during training, which helps it converge faster and achieve better performance. The proposed MARL algorithm is equipped with carefully selected parameters that aid in avoiding obstacles, speeding up path planning, and achieving minimal energy consumption. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, three types of numerical experiments including the ϵ-greedy MADDPG, MADDPG, and Q-Learning methods were conducted. The paper thoroughly examines the existing literature and investigates key performance indicators (KPIs) and solutions for HO and mobility-related challenges while considering applied standards. This paper improves energy efficiency and communications reliability for wireless transmission under κ - μ shadowed fading (i.e., integrating all channel impairments including path loss, shadowing, fading) and hardware impairment by employing a nonlinear energy harvester and multi-antenna power transmitter. Numerous results corroborate these formulas and expose that energy-harvesting nonlinearity, hardware impairment, and channel conditions drastically deteriorate system performance. Fifth-generation (5G) and beyond networks are expected to serve large numbers of user equipments (UEs). Grant-based random access (RA) protocols are efficient when serving human users, typically with large data volumes to transmit. The strongest user collision resolution (SUCRe) is the first protocol that effectively uses the many antennas at the 5G base station (BS) to improve connectivity performance. In this paper, our proposal involves substituting the retransmission rule of the SUCRe protocol with a neural network (NN) to enhance the identification of the strongest user and resolve collisions in a decentralized manner on the UEs' side. The proposed NN-based procedure is trained offline, admitting different congestion levels of the system, aiming to obtain a single setup able to operate with different numbers of UEs. The numerical results indicate that our method attains substantial connectivity performance improvements compared to other protocols without requiring additional complexity or overhead. Multi-input multi-output and non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems can improve channel capacity and spectrum efficiency distinctly to support real-time applications. Age of information (AoI) plays a crucial role in real-time applications as it determines the timeliness of the extracted information. In MIMO-NOMA IoT systems, the base station (BS) determines the sample collection commands and allocates the transmit power for each IoT device. Each device determines whether to sample data according to the sample collection commands and adopts the allocated power to transmit the sampled data to the BS over the MIMO-NOMA channel. Afterwards, the BS employs the successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique to decode the signal of the data transmitted by each device. The sample collection commands and power allocation may affect the AoI and energy consumption of the system. Optimizing the sample collection commands and power allocation is essential for minimizing both AoI and energy consumption in MIMO-NOMA IoT systems. In this paper, we propose the optimal power allocation to achieve it based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Simulations have demonstrated that the optimal power allocation effectively achieves lower AoI and energy consumption compared to other algorithms. Adaptive information-sampling approaches enable efficient selection of mobile robots' waypoints through which the accurate sensing and mapping of a physical process, such as the radiation or field intensity, can be obtained. A key parameter in the informative sampling objective function could be optimized balance the need to explore new information where the uncertainty is very high and to exploit the data sampled so far, with which a great deal of the underlying spatial fields can be obtained, such as the source locations or modalities of the physical process. However, works in the literature have either assumed the robot's energy is unconstrained or used a homogeneous availability of energy capacity among different robots. Therefore, this paper analyzes the impact of the adaptive information-sampling algorithm's information function used in exploration and exploitation to achieve a tradeoff between balancing the mapping, localization, and energy efficiency objectives. We use Gaussian process regression (GPR) to predict and estimate confidence bounds, thereby determining each point's informativeness. Through extensive experimental data, we provide a deeper and holistic perspective on the effect of information function parameters on the prediction map's accuracy (RMSE), confidence bound (variance), energy consumption (distance), and time spent (sample count) in both single- and multi-robot scenarios. The results provide meaningful insights into choosing the appropriate energy-aware information function parameters based on sensing objectives (e.g., source localization or mapping). Based on our analysis, we can conclude that it would be detrimental to give importance only to the uncertainty of the information function (which would explode the energy needs) or to the predictive mean of the information (which would jeopardize the mapping accuracy). By assigning more importance to the information uncertainly with some non-zero importance to the information value (e.g., 75:25 ratio), it is possible to achieve an optimal tradeoff between exploration and exploitation objectives while keeping the energy requirements manageable. Signal control, as an integral component of traffic management, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency of traffic and reducing environmental pollution. However, the majority of signal control research based on game theory primarily focuses on vehicular perspectives, often neglecting pedestrians, who are significant participants at intersections. This paper introduces a game theory-based signal control approach designed to minimize and equalize the queued vehicles and pedestrians across the different phases. The Nash bargaining solution is employed to determine the optimal green duration for each phase within a fixed cycle length. Several simulation tests were carried out by SUMO software to assess the effectiveness of this proposed approach. We select the actuated signal control approach as the baseline to demonstrate the superiority and stability of the proposed control strategy. The simulation results reveal that the proposed approach is able to reduce pedestrian and vehicle delay, vehicle queue length, fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions under different demand levels and demand patterns. Furthermore, the proposed approach consistently achieves more equalized queue length for each lane compared to the actuated control strategy, indicating a higher degree of fairness. In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are considered an effective data collection tool. In this paper, we investigate the energy-efficient data collection problem in a UAV-enabled secure WSN without knowing the instantaneous channel state information of the eavesdropper (Eve). Specifically, the UAV collected the information from all the wireless sensors at the scheduled time and forward it to the fusion center while Eve tries to eavesdrop on this confidential information from the UAV. To surmount this intractable and convoluted mixed-integer non-convex problem, we propose an efficient iterative optimization algorithm using the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to minimize the maximum energy consumption of the ground sensor nodes (GSNs) under the constraints of secrecy outage probability (SOP), connection outage probability (COP), minimum secure data, information causality, and UAV trajectory. The increasing reliance on cyber-physical systems (CPSs) in critical domains such as healthcare, smart grids, and intelligent transportation systems necessitates robust security measures to protect against cyber threats. Among these threats, blackhole and greyhole attacks pose significant risks to the availability and integrity of CPSs. The current detection and mitigation approaches often struggle to accurately differentiate between legitimate and malicious behavior, leading to ineffective protection. This paper introduces Gini-index and blockchain-based Blackhole/Greyhole RPL (GBG-RPL), a novel technique designed for efficient detection and mitigation of blackhole and greyhole attacks in smart health monitoring CPSs. GBG-RPL leverages the analytical prowess of the Gini index and the security advantages of blockchain technology to protect these systems against sophisticated threats. This research not only focuses on identifying anomalous activities but also proposes a resilient framework that ensures the integrity and reliability of the monitored data. GBG-RPL achieves notable improvements as compared to another state-of-the-art technique referred to as BCPS-RPL, including a 7.18% reduction in packet loss ratio, an 11.97% enhancement in residual energy utilization, and a 19.27% decrease in energy consumption. Its security features are also very effective, boasting a 10.65% improvement in attack-detection rate and an 18.88% faster average attack-detection time. Human activity recognition (HAR) using wearable sensors enables continuous monitoring for healthcare applications. However, the conventional centralised training of deep learning models on sensor data poses challenges related to privacy, communication costs, and on-device efficiency. This paper proposes a federated learning framework integrating spiking neural networks (SNNs) with long short-term memory (LSTM) networks for energy-efficient and privacy-preserving HAR. The hybrid spiking-LSTM (S-LSTM) model synergistically combines the event-driven efficiency of SNNs and the sequence modelling capability of LSTMs. The model is trained using surrogate gradient learning and backpropagation through time, enabling fully supervised end-to-end learning. Extensive evaluations of two public datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms LSTM, CNN, and S-CNN models in accuracy and energy efficiency. For instance, the proposed S-LSTM achieved an accuracy of 97.36% and 89.69% for indoor and outdoor scenarios, respectively. Furthermore, the results also showed a significant improvement in energy efficiency of 32.30%, compared to simple LSTM. In this paper, in order to reduce the energy consumption and time of data transmission, the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and mobile edge caching technologies are jointly considered in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. As for the cache-assisted vehicular NOMA–MEC networks, a problem of minimizing the energy consumed by vehicles (mobile devices, MDs) is formulated under time and resource constraints, which jointly optimize the computing resource allocation, subchannel selection, device association, offloading and caching decisions. To solve the formulated problem, we develop an effective joint computation offloading and task-caching algorithm based on the twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) algorithm. Such a TD3-based offloading (TD3O) algorithm includes a designed action transformation (AT) algorithm used for transforming continuous action space into a discrete one. In addition, to solve the formulated problem in a non-iterative manner, an effective heuristic algorithm (HA) is also designed. As for the designed algorithms, we provide some detailed analyses of computation complexity and convergence, and give some meaningful insights through simulation. Simulation results show that the TD3O algorithm could achieve lower local energy consumption than several benchmark algorithms, and HA could achieve lower consumption than the completely offloading algorithm and local execution algorithm. Quadrotors play a crucial role in the national economy. The control technology for quadrotor-slung load transportation systems has become a research hotspot. However, the underactuated load's swing poses significant challenges to the stability of the system. In this paper, we propose a Lyapunov-based control strategy, to ensure the stability of the quadrotor-slung load transportation system while satisfying the constraints of the load's swing angles. Firstly, a position controller without swing angle constraints is proposed, to ensure the stability of the system. Then, a barrier Lyapunov function based on the load's swing angle constraints is constructed, and an anti-swing controller is designed to guarantee the states' asymptotic stability. Finally, a PD controller is designed, to drive the actual angles to the virtual ones, which are extracted from the position controller. The effectiveness of the control method is verified by comparing it to the results of the LQR algorithm. With the world moving towards low-carbon and environmentally friendly development, the rapid growth of new-energy vehicles is evident. The utilization of deep-learning-based license-plate-recognition (LPR) algorithms has become widespread. However, existing LPR systems have difficulty achieving timely, effective, and energy-saving recognition due to their inherent limitations such as high latency and energy consumption. An innovative Edge–LPR system that leverages edge computing and lightweight network models is proposed in this paper. With the help of this technology, the excessive reliance on the computational capacity and the uneven implementation of resources of cloud computing can be successfully mitigated. The system is specifically a simple LPR. Channel pruning was used to reconstruct the backbone layer, reduce the network model parameters, and effectively reduce the GPU resource consumption. By utilizing the computing resources of the Intel second-generation computing stick, the network models were deployed on edge gateways to detect license plates directly. The reliability and effectiveness of the Edge–LPR system were validated through the experimental analysis of the CCPD standard dataset and real-time monitoring dataset from charging stations. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs), constrained by limited resources, demand routing strategies that prioritize energy efficiency. The tactic of cooperative routing, which leverages the broadcast nature of wireless channels, has garnered attention for its capability to amplify routing efficacy. This manuscript introduces a power-conscious routing approach, tailored for resource-restricted WSNs. By exploiting cooperative communications, we introduce an innovative relay node selection technique within clustered networks, aiming to curtail energy usage while safeguarding data dependability. This inventive methodology has been amalgamated into the Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), giving rise to the cooperative and efficient routing protocol (CERP). The devised CERP protocol pinpoints and selects the most efficacious relay node, ensuring that packet transmission is both energy-minimal and reliable. Performance evaluations were executed to substantiate the proposed strategy, and its practicality was examined using an Arduino-based sensor node and the Contiki operating system in real-world scenarios. The outcomes affirm the efficacy of the proposed strategy, outshining the standard RPL concerning reliability and energy conservation, enhancing RPL reliability by 10% and energy savings by 18%. The involvement of wireless sensor networks in large-scale real-time applications is exponentially growing. These applications can range from hazardous area supervision to military applications. In such critical contexts, the simultaneous improvement of the quality of service and the network lifetime represents a big challenge. To meet these requirements, using multiple mobile sinks can be a key solution to accommodate the variations that may affect the network. Recent studies were based on predefined mobility models for sinks and relied on multi-hop routing techniques. Besides, most of these studies focused only on improving energy consumption without considering QoS metrics. In this paper, multiple mobile sinks with random mobile models are used to establish a tradeoff between power consumption and the quality of service. The simulation results show that using hierarchical data routing with random mobile sinks represents an efficient method to balance the distribution of the energy levels of nodes and to reduce the overall power consumption. Moreover, it is proven that the proposed routing methods allow for minimizing the latency of the transmitted data, increasing the reliability, and improving the throughput of the received data compared to recent works, which are based on predefined trajectories of mobile sinks and multi-hop architectures. Smart meter datasets have recently transitioned from monthly intervals to one-second granularity, yielding invaluable insights for diverse metering functions. Clustering analysis, a fundamental data mining technique, is extensively applied to discern unique energy consumption patterns. However, the advent of high-resolution smart meter data brings forth formidable challenges, including non-Gaussian data distributions, unknown cluster counts, and varying feature importance within high-dimensional spaces. This article introduces an innovative learning framework integrating the expectation-maximization algorithm with the minimum message length criterion. This unified approach enables concurrent feature and model selection, finely tuned for the proposed bounded asymmetric generalized Gaussian mixture model with feature saliency. Our experiments aim to replicate an efficient smart meter data analysis scenario by incorporating three distinct feature extraction methods. We rigorously validate the clustering efficacy of our proposed algorithm against several state-of-the-art approaches, employing diverse performance metrics across synthetic and real smart meter datasets. The clusters that we identify effectively highlight variations in residential energy consumption, furnishing utility companies with actionable insights for targeted demand reduction efforts. Moreover, we demonstrate our method's robustness and real-world applicability by harnessing Concordia's High-Performance Computing infrastructure. This facilitates efficient energy pattern characterization, particularly within smart meter environments involving edge cloud computing. Finally, we emphasize that our proposed mixture model outperforms three other models in this paper's comparative study.
