Lead is classified to be one of the top heavy metal pollutants in China. The corresponding environmental issues especially during the management of spent lead-acid battery have already caused significant public awareness and concern. This research gives a brief overview on the recycling situation based on an investigation of the lead industry in China and also the development of technologies for spent lead-acid batteries. The main principles and research focuses of different technologies including pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and greener technologies are summarized and compared. Subsequently, the circulability of lead based on the entire life cycle analyses of lead-acid battery is calculated. By considering different recycling schemes, the recycling situation of spent lead-acid battery in China can be understood semi-quantitatively. According to this research, 30% of the primary lead production can be shut down that the lead production can still ensure consecutive life cycle operation of lead-acid battery, if proper management of the spent lead-acid battery is implemented according to current lead industry situation in China. This research provides a methodology on the view of lead circulability in the whole life cycle of a specific product and is aiming to contribute more quantitative guidelines for efficient organization of lead industry in China. • The natures of MOCVD dust have been obtained by comprehensive characterizations. • The distributions of GaN and metallic indium phase are crucial to metal recycling. • Some treatment strategies for MOCVD dust are preliminarily evaluated and discussed. • 89.59% of gallium is selectively leached using NaOH. Gallium (indium)-bearing dust generated from semiconductor industry is an important secondary resource for critical metal recycling. However, the diverse and distinct physicochemical natures of such waste material have made its recycling less effective, e.g. low extraction rate and complex treatment procedures. This research is devoted to gaining in-depth knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of such waste, including the chemical composition, physical phases, particle size distribution and chemical-thermal properties with a series of technologies. As a consequence, the occurrence and distribution of GaN and metallic indium phases are found to be crucial to efficient metal recycling. The thermal-chemical behavior shows that continuous oxidation occurred in the air atmosphere, indicating that heat-treatment followed by acid leaching is feasible to improve their recycling efficiencies. This process is able to leach 80.35% of gallium and 95.78% of indium with one-step operation. Furthermore, different treatment strategies for the waste material are preliminarily evaluated and discussed for the aim of metal recovery. The results show that gallium can be selectively recycled with recycling rate of 89.59% using alkaline leaching. With this research, the understanding on the recyclability of different metals and possibilities of selective recovery can be improved. Abstract The production of lithium-ion battery is around 9100 million sets in 2016 and is believed to further increase consecutively. This fact triggers the generation of spent cathode materials which contain metals of both valuable and hazardous. Their recycling corresponding to life cycle sustainability of lithium-ion battery has attracted significant attention. However, most technologies for recycling waste lithium-ion batteries are dependent on metallurgical based processes where secondary pollution is inevitable. This research demonstrates a process to directly regenerate LiNi 1−x−y Co x Mn y O 2 cathode material by incorporating methods of mechanochemical activation and solid-state sintering, which can restore the layered structure and improve the lithium ion diffusion without introducing extra impurities. By understanding the effects of sintering temperature, the optimal conditions for direct regeneration of cathode materials with obvious improvement on electrochemical performance can be obtained. Abstract In this paper, a sustainable process to recover valuable metals from spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) in sulfuric acid using ammonium chloride as reductant was proposed and studied. Being easily reused, ammonium chloride is found to be efficient and posing minor environmental impacts during the overall process. By investigating the effects of a wide range of parameters, e.g., H 2 SO 4 concentration, NH 4 Cl concentration, temperature, leaching time, and solid-to-liquid mass ratio, the leaching behaviour of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn was systematically investigated. And the leaching mechanism and kinetics were determined by mineralogically characterization of residues at various reaction times and by fitting using different kinetic models. With this research, it is possible to provide a win-win solution to improve the recycling effectiveness of spent LIBs by using waste salt that is easily reused as the reductant. Recovery of metals from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has attracted worldwide attention because of issues from both environmental impacts and resource supply. Leaching, for instance using an acidic solution, is a critical step for effective recovery of metals from spent LIBs. To achieve both high leaching efficiency and selectivity of the targeted metals, improved understanding on the interactive features of the materials and leaching solutions is highly required. However, such understanding is still limited at least caused by the variation on physiochemical properties of different leaching solutions. In this research, a comprehensive investigation and evaluation on the leaching process using acidic solutions to recycle spent LIBs is carried out. Through analyzing two important parameters, i.e. leaching speed and recovery rate of the corresponding metals, the effects of hydrogen ion concentration, acid species and concentration on these two parameters were evaluated. It was found that a leachant with organic acids may leach Co and Li from the cathode scrap and leave Al foil as metallic form with high leaching selectivity, while that with inorganic acids typically leach all metals into the solution. Inconsistency between the leaching selectivity and efficiency during spent LIBs recycling is frequently noticed. In order to achieve an optimal status with both high leaching selectivity and efficiency (especially at high solid-to-liquid ratios), it is important to manipulate the average leaching speed and recovery rate of metals to optimize the leaching conditions. Subsequently, it is found that the leaching speed is significantly dependent on the hydrogen ion concentration and the capability of releasing hydrogen ions of the acidic leachant during leaching. With this research, it is expected to improve understanding on controlling the physiochemical properties of a leaching solution and to potentially design processes for spent LIBs recycling with high industrial viability. To solve the recycling challenge for aqueous binder based lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), a novel process for recycling and resynthesizing LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 from the cathode scraps generated during manufacturing process is proposed in this study. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is employed to separate the cathode material from the aluminum foil. The effects of TFA concentration, liquid/solid ( L / S ) ratio, reaction temperature and time on the separation efficiencies of the cathode material and aluminum foil are investigated systematically. The cathode material can be separated completely under the optimal experimental condition of 15 vol.% TFA solution, L / S ratio of 8.0 mL g − 1 , reacting at 40 °C for 180 min along with appropriate agitation. LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 is successfully resynthesized from the separated cathode material by solid state reaction method. Several kinds of characterizations are performed to verify the typical properties of the resynthesized LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 powder. Electrochemical tests show that the initial charge and discharge capacities of the resynthesized LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 are 201 mAh g − 1 and 155.4 mAh g −1 (2.8–4.5 V, 0.1 C), respectively. The discharge capacity remains at 129 mAh g −1 even after 30 cycles with a capacity retention ratio of 83.01%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Models using 3 ML algorithms were developed to predict performance of ZVI-based AD. • Algorithm XGBoost achieved the highest accuracy in predicting total CH4 production. • DL showed the lowest RMSE in predicting cumulative CH4 production curve. • TSf, sCOD, ZVI dosage and particle size are key parameters affecting the CH4 yield. The use of zero-valent iron (ZVI) to enhance anaerobic digestion (AD) systems is widely advocated as it improves methane production and system stability. Accurate modeling of ZVI-based AD reactor is conducive to predicting methane production potential, optimizing operational strategy, and gathering reference information for industrial design in place of time-consuming and laborious tests. In this study, three machine learning (ML) algorithms, namely random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and deep learning (DL), were evaluated for their feasibility of predicting the performance of ZVI-based AD reactors based on the operating parameters collected in 9 published articles. XGBoost demonstrated the highest accuracy in predicting total methane production, with a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 21.09, compared to 26.03 and 27.35 of RF and DL, respectively. The accuracy represented by mean absolute percentage error also showed the same trend, with 14.26%, 15.14% and 17.82% for XGBoost, RF and DL, respectively. Through the feature importance generated by XGBoost, the parameters of total solid of feedstock (TS f), sCOD, ZVI dosage and particle size were identified as the dominant parameters that affect the methane production, with feature importance weights of 0.339, 0.238, 0.158, and 0.116, respectively. The digestion time was further introduced into the above-established model to predict the cumulative methane production. With the expansion of training dataset, DL outperformed XGBoost and RF to show the lowest RMSEs of 11.83 and 5.82 in the control and ZVI-added reactors, respectively. Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries has attracted wide attention because of their high content of valuable and hazardous metals. One of the difficulties for effective metal recovery is the separation of different metals from the solution after leaching. In this research, a full hydrometallurgical process is developed to selectively recover valuable metals (Ni, Co and Li) from cathode scrap of spent lithium ion batteries. By introducing ammonia-ammonium sulphate as the leaching solution and sodium sulphite as the reductant, the total selectivity of Ni, Co and Li in the first-step leaching solution is more than 98.6% while it for Mn is only 1.36%. In detail understanding of the selective leaching process is carried out by investigating the effects of parameters such as leaching reagent composition, leaching time (0–480 min), agitation speed (200–700 rpm), pulp density (10–50 g/L) and temperature (323–353 K). It was found that Mn is primarily reduced from Mn 4+ into Mn 2+ into the solution as Mn ( NH 3 ) x 2 + while it subsequently precipitates out into the residue in the form of (NH 4 ) 2 Mn(SO 3 ) 2 ·H 2 O. Ni, Co and Li are leached and remain in the solution either as metallic ion or amine complexes. The optimised leaching conditions can be further obtained and the leaching kinetics is found to be chemical reaction control under current leaching conditions. As a result, this research is potentially beneficial for further optimisation of the spent lithium ion battery recycling process after incorporating with metal extraction from the leaching solution.
