This paper proposes the Love Evolution Algorithm (LEA), a novel evolutionary algorithm inspired by the stimulus–value–role theory. The optimization process of the LEA includes three phases: stimulus, value, and role. Both partners evolve through these phases and benefit from them regardless of the outcome of the relationship. This inspiration is abstracted into mathematical models for global optimization. The efficiency of the LEA is validated through numerical experiments with CEC2017 benchmark functions, outperforming seven metaheuristic algorithms as evidenced by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Friedman test. Further tests using the CEC2022 benchmark functions confirm the competitiveness of the LEA compared to seven state-of-the-art metaheuristics. Lastly, the study extends to real-world problems, demonstrating the performance of the LEA across eight diverse engineering problems. The chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) is a nature-inspired algorithm that imitates chimpanzees' individual intelligence and hunting behaviors. In this algorithm, the hunting process consists of four steps: driving, blocking, chasing, and attacking. Because of the novelty of ChOA, the steps of the hunting process have been modeled in the simplest possible way, leading to slow and premature convergence similar to other iterative algorithms. This paper proposes six spiral functions and introduces two novel hybrid spiral functions (SEB-ChOA) to rectify the abovementioned deficiencies. The SEB-ChOAs' performance is evaluated on 23 standard benchmarks, 20 benchmarks of IEEE CEC-2005, 10 cases of IEEE CEC06-2019 test-suite, and 12 constrained real-world engineering problems of IEEE CEC-2020. The SEB-ChOAs are compared with three groups of optimization algorithms, including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) as the most well-known optimization algorithms, Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), Ant Lion Optimization (ALO), Henry Gas Solubility Optimization (HGSO), as almost novel optimization algorithms, and jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12, as winners of IEEE CEC06-2019 competition, and also EBOwithCMAR and CIPDE as superior secondary optimization algorithms. The SEB-ChOAs reached the first rank among almost all benchmarks and demonstrated very competitive results compared to jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 as the best-performing optimizers. Statistical evidence shows that the SEB-ChOA outperforms the PSO, GA, SMA, MPA, ALO, and HGSO optimizers while producing results comparable to those of the jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 algorithms. This paper proposes a new method for encryption of RGB color images by combining two encryption approaches: the spatial approach and the transformation approach. The proposed method uses the 3D fractional modified Henon map (3D FrMHM) and the discrete fractional Krawtchouk moments (FrDKM). We have also proposed a new hybrid optimization algorithm (H-SSAOA) to optimize the parameters of the proposed Henon map and the parameters of the Krawtchouk fractional moments. This algorithm is based on the hybridization of two metaheuristic algorithms: the "Salp Swarm Algorithm" (SSA) and the "Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm" (AOA). The simulation results reveal the optimization efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithm H-SSAOA compared to other meta-heuristic algorithms and the efficiency of the suggested encryption method for encrypting RGB color images in terms of sensitivity to the security key and resistance to different attacks. This paper presents an effective approach for solving economic load dispatch problems contemplating the scheduling a set of thermal generating units to produce a specific power at low consumption costs. These problems can be thought of as nonlinear, non-convex, and highly constrained optimization problems with a large number of local minima. To cope with the above issues in solving such problems, a new meta-heuristic named capuchin search algorithm was adopted. To boost the search performance of this algorithm as well as to mitigate its early convergence and regression to the local optimum, it was hybridized with another algorithm and improved using several positive amendments. First, a memory element was added to this algorithm to ameliorate its position and velocity update mechanisms in order to exploit the most encouraging candidate solutions. Second, two adaptive parametric functions were used to manage the exploration and exploitation features of this algorithm and balance them appropriately. Finally, the hybridization was made using the gradient-based optimizer to strengthen the intensification ability of this algorithm and balance its searching ability to fulfill sensible search performance. The proficiency of the proposed algorithm was divulged by assessing it on computationally difficult economic load dispatch problems under 6 different tests with a generator of 3, 13, 40, 80, and 140 units, each with different constraints and load conditions. The proposed algorithm provided the best performance among many other competitors. Since the past few years, several metaheuristic algorithms, inspired by the natural processes, have been introduced to solve different complex optimization problems. Studying and comparing the convergence, computational burden and statistical significance of those metaheuristics are helpful for future algorithmic development and their applications. This paper focuses on comparing the optimization performance of classical dragonfly algorithm (DA) and its seven different variants, i.e., hybrid memory-based dragonfly algorithm with differential evolution (DADE), quantum-behaved and Gaussian mutational dragonfly algorithm (QGDA), memory-based hybrid dragonfly algorithm (MHDA), chaotic dragonfly algorithm (CDA), biogeography-based Mexican hat wavelet dragonfly algorithm (BMDA), hybrid Nelder–Mead algorithm and dragonfly algorithm (INMDA) and hybridization of dragonfly algorithm and artificial bee colony (HDA) while solving 80 CEC-2021 benchmark problems. It is observed that the convergence rates of different variants of DA algorithm vary, and the corresponding computational times for such variations are also evaluated. This paper finally ranks DA and its variants according to their convergence efficiency and Friedman test. Recently, substantial progress has been made in developing efficient algorithms for solving combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, following this direction, the problem of designing supply chains which is an important combinatorial optimization problem is considered. The structural properties of supply chain models are investigated to transform such models into a generalized network optimization model. The transformation to a generalized network optimization model reduces the algorithms' solution time. Moreover, this paper proposes a new efficient hybrid algorithm based on tabu search and generalized network simplex algorithm (GN-TSA) for designing multi-objectives supply chain models. The developed algorithm's parameters are tuned properly, validated, and evaluated. The algorithm's performance is then compared to an exact algorithm embedded in the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) and two metaheuristic algorithms, namely a linear programming simplex algorithm integrated with the tabu search approach (LP-TSA) and simulated annealing. The findings indicated that the GN-TSA obtains solutions very close to the exact algorithm with less computation time. In addition, the proposed algorithm outperforms the LP-TSA and simulated annealing in terms of computation time, while the quality of the solutions is the same as solutions obtained by LP-TSA and better than simulated annealing. The weapon target assignment (WTA) problem is an important task to tactical arrangements in military commitment operations. It describes the optimal method to allocate defense in opposition to threats in fighting situations. It is an NP-complete issue in which no accurate outcome for all conceivable situations is known. The time performance of created algorithms is a major challenge in modeling the WTA problem, which has only been lately considered in related papers. This article improves the recently developed algorithm called improved Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (iTSA) which is inspired by the natural behavior of tunicates to solve the WTA problem. The suggested method is compared with well-known metaheuristic approaches. The experimental findings show that the method presented works better than previous competing metaheuristic approaches. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are relatively new optimization algorithms introduced to solve optimization problems in recent years. For example, the firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the fireflies' flashing behavior. However, its weakness in terms of exploration and early convergence has been pointed out. In this paper, two approaches were proposed to improve the FA. In the first proposed approach, a new improved opposition-based learning FA (IOFA) method was presented to accelerate the convergence and improve the FA's exploration capability. In the second proposed approach, a symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm improved the exploration and exploitation of the first approach; two new parameters set these two goals, and the second approach was named IOFASOS. The purpose of the second method is that in the process of the SOS algorithm, the whole population is effective in the IOFA method to find solutions in the early stages of implementation, and with each iteration, fewer solutions are affected in the population. The experiments on 24 standard benchmark functions were conducted, and the first proposed approach showed a better performance in the small and medium dimensions and exhibited a relatively moderate performance in the higher dimensions. In contrast, the second proposed approach was better in increasing dimensions. In general, the empirical results showed that the two new approaches outperform other algorithms in most mathematical benchmarking functions. Thus, The IOFASOS model has more efficient solutions. This paper presents a novel meta-heuristic algorithm called Ali Baba and the forty thieves (AFT) for solving global optimization problems. Recall the famous tale of Ali Baba and the forty thieves, where Ali Baba once saw a gang of forty thieves enter a strange cave filled with all kinds of treasures. The strategies pursued by the forty thieves in the search for Ali Baba inspired us to design ideas and underlie the basic concepts to put forward the mathematical models and implement the exploration and exploitation processes of the proposed algorithm. The performance of the AFT algorithm was assessed on a set of basic benchmark test functions and two more challenging benchmarks called IEEE CEC-2017 and IEEE CEC-C06 2019 benchmark test functions. These benchmarks cover simple and complex test functions with various dimensions and levels of complexity. An extensive comparative study was performed between the AFT algorithm and other well-studied algorithms, and the significance of the results was proved by statistical test methods. To study the potential performance of AFT, its further development is discussed and carried out from five aspects. Finally, the applicability of the AFT algorithm was subsequently demonstrated in solving five engineering design problems. This paper presents a powerful swarm intelligence metaheuristic optimization algorithm called Dynamic Cat Swarm Optimization. The formulation is through modifying the existing Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm. The original Cat Swarm Optimization suffers from the shortcoming of "premature convergence," which is the possibility of entrapment in local optima which usually happens due to the off balance between exploration and exploitation phases. Therefore, the proposed algorithm suggests a new method to provide a proper balance between these phases by modifying the selection scheme and the seeking mode of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, 23 classical test functions, 10 modern test functions (CEC 2019) and a real-world scenario are used. In addition, the dimension-wise diversity metric is used to measure the percentage of the exploration and exploitation phases. The optimization results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which ranks first compared to several well-known algorithms available in the literature. Furthermore, statistical methods and graphs are also used to further confirm the outperformance of the algorithm. In this paper, an evolutionary optimization procedure is presented to generate band-pass metasurface-based filters in terahertz regime. As a measure of novelty, pass-band, transition, and out-band characteristics are investigated separately, all of which result in different metasurfaces for filtering applications. The presented approach is defined based on random hill climbing algorithm, regarding the established link between Matlab and HFSS software. A metasurface-based filter with specific properties is considered as the main problem to be solved by the optimization method. Moreover, the fuzzy theory, mean square method, and weighting coefficient procedure are considered to define an efficient fitness function evaluation approach. Also, a step-by-step procedure is used to generate desired structures with a great note of efficiency. The final generated structure has magnificent characteristics including sharp transitions together with transmittance around 0.68 and less than 0.04 at pass-band and out-band regions, respectively. Feature transformation methods can be used effectively to improve the performance of the machine learning techniques, such as classification and clustering, via enhancing the discrimination among the samples. Additionally, binary representation of features may be necessary in several circumstances. For example, distributed systems may have limited bandwidth, storage, and energy that necessitate rough quantization of the measurements. This paper proposes a random projection-based feature transformation method that maps the data points from the original space into a new binary space. In the proposed transformation method, the random projection process is formulated as an optimization problem. A modified chaotic version of the sine–cosine algorithm is used to find the optimal random projector. The performance of the proposed transformation method is validated using 15 standard UCI benchmark datasets against the linear discernment analysis. Moreover, it is compared to other metaheuristic-based feature reduction methods including the gray wolf optimizer, the genetic algorithm, and the antlion optimizer. In recent decades, researches on optimizing the parameter of the artificial neural network (ANN) model has attracted significant attention from researchers. Hybridization of superior algorithms helps improving optimization performance and capable of solving complex applications. As a traditional gradient-based learning algorithm, ANN suffers from a slow learning rate and is easily trapped in local minima when training techniques such as gradient descent (GD) and back-propagation (BP) algorithm are used. The characteristics of randomization and selection of the best or near-optimal solution of metaheuristic algorithm provide an effective and robust solution; therefore, it has always been used in training of ANN to improve and overcome the above problems. New metaheuristic algorithms are proposed every year. Therefore, the review of its latest developments is essential. This article attempts to summarize the metaheuristic algorithms which have been proposed from the year 1975 to 2020 from various journals, conferences, technical papers, and books. The comparison of the popularity of the metaheuristic algorithm is presented in two time frames, such as algorithms proposed in the recent 20 years and those proposed earlier. Then, some of the popular metaheuristic algorithms and their working principle are reviewed. This article further categorizes the latest metaheuristic search algorithm in the literature to indicate their efficiency in training ANN for various industry applications. More and more researchers tend to develop new hybrid optimization tools by combining two or more metaheuristic algorithms to optimize the training parameters of ANN. Generally, the algorithm's optimal performance must be able to achieve a fine balance of their exploration and exploitation characteristics. This paper proposes a novel metaheuristic-based optimization technique called search space reduction (SSR) optimization algorithm. This algorithm attempts to solve the common pitfalls in the existing algorithms in the literature by randomly generating the search agents in every iteration instead of following the best solution. This new algorithm is simple, computationally efficient, which is based on the concept of reducing the search space. The performance of this algorithm is tested over classical test functions and CEC'17 benchmark test functions. The results are compared with well-established algorithms in the literature. The test results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits good exploration and exploitation capabilities. Further, this algorithm also outperforms other algorithms in solving multimodal optimization problems. In addition to this, the computational complexity of this algorithm is also presented according to CEC'17 guidelines.
