In the context of global carbon emission reduction, solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is experiencing rapid development. Using high-resolution remote sensing images to accurately obtain PV information over a large region, including location and size, has the advantages of high statistical efficiency and timely data update for the PV energy management. Due to the intra-class diversity of PV panels and the intricate variability in their deployment environments, existing semantic segmentation methods often have problems such as under-segmentation and mis-segmentation. To alleviate these problems, this paper proposes an improved DeepLabv3+ semantic segmentation network to more accurately extract PV panels from high-resolution remote sensing images. With the aim of alleviating under-segmentation, a multi-level context aggregation module is developed. This module can enhance the model's ability to learn the characteristics of PV panels and their surrounding environment by aggregating rich contextual information from multi-scale and semantic levels. To alleviate the problem of mis-segmentation, a hybrid attention module is introduced. This module sequentially and adaptively adjusts the weight distribution in both the channel and spatial dimensions, thus enabling the model to focus more on the feature information and spatial positions of PV objects. Experiments conducted on a self-constructed Beijing PV segmentation dataset show that the method in this paper has advantages of completeness and accuracy in extracting PV panels compared to the baseline model and current mainstream semantic segmentation network. Data driven deep learning methods have become the mainstream method of building extraction from remote sensing images. In this paper, deep learning algorithm is used to classify and extract buildings from remote sensing images of rural areas around the Great Wall in the suburbs of Beijing captured by unmanned aerial vehicles. Aiming at the shortcomings of the current mainstream instance segmentation algorithm Mask R-CNN in feature fusion and poor prediction of instance mask boundaries, this paper proposes a boundary optimization algorithm for building instance segmentation based on discrete wavelet transform. Firstly, the discrete wavelet transform is introduced into the segmentation task branch of Mask R-CNN algorithm to extract the low-frequency and high-frequency information of the real mask, in which the high-frequency information includes the boundary information. Secondly, the pixel by pixel prediction of the mask turns into the learning of the low-frequency and high-frequency information of the real mask. The learning of the high-frequency information helps the segmentation network to learn the boundary features better. Finally, using the reversibility of discrete wavelet transform, the low-frequency and high-frequency information of the learned mask is inversely transformed to reconstruct the final mask. The improved algorithm is evaluated on the dataset COCO, and applied to the automatic extraction of buildings. The DWT Mask R-CNN algorithm model achieved 70.2% segmentation accuracy and 71.4% detection accuracy, which were improved by 1% and 0.7% respectively compared with the Mask R-CNN and Cascade Mask R-CNN models. The experimental results show that the instance segmentation edge optimization algorithm combined with wavelet transform has achieved better results on the segmentation boundary, improved the poor effect of mask edge detection and achieved higher detection accuracy, and can accurately extract village buildings. InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) is widely recognized as a crucial remote sensing tool for monitoring various geological disasters because it provides all-day and all-weather monitoring. Nevertheless, the current interpretation methods for InSAR heavily depend on the interpreter's experience, which hinders efficiency and fails to meet the requirements for the timely detection of geologic hazards. Furthermore, the results obtained through current InSAR processing carry inherent noise interference, further complicating the interpretation process. To address those issues, this paper proposes an approach that enables automatic and rapid identification of deformation zones. The proposed method leverages IPTA (Interferometric Point Target Analysis) technology for SAR data processing. It combines the power of HNSW (Hierarchical Navigable Small Word) and DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) algorithms to cluster deformation results. Compared with traditional methods, the computational efficiency of the proposed method is improved by 11.26 times, and spatial noise is suppressed. Additionally, the clustering results are fused with slope units determined using DEM (Digital Elevation Model), which facilitates the automatic identification of slopes experiencing deformation. The experimental verification in the western mountainous area of Beijing has identified 716 hidden danger areas, and this method is superior to the traditional technology in speed and automation. With the rapid development of the energy industry and the growth of the global energy demand in recent years, the development of the photovoltaic industry has become increasingly significant. However, the development of the PV industry is constrained by high land costs, and land in central cities and industrial areas is often very expensive and unsuitable for the installation of PV equipment in large areas. With this background knowledge, the key to evaluating the PV potential is by counting the rooftop information of buildings, and an ideal solution for extracting building rooftop information is from remote sensing satellite images using the deep learning method; however, the deep learning method often requires large-scale labeled samples, and the labeling of remote sensing images is often time-consuming and expensive. To reduce the burden of data labeling, models trained on large datasets can be used as pre-trained models (e.g., ImageNet) to provide prior knowledge for training. However, most of the existing pre-trained model parameters are not suitable for direct transfer to remote sensing tasks. In this paper, we design a pseudo-label-guided self-supervised learning (PGSSL) semantic segmentation network structure based on high-resolution remote sensing images to extract building information. The pseudo-label-guided learning method allows the feature results extracted by the pretext task to be more applicable to the target task and ultimately improves segmentation accuracy. Our proposed method achieves better results than current contrastive learning methods in most experiments and uses only about 20–50% of the labeled data to achieve comparable performance with random initialization. In addition, a more accurate statistical method for building density distribution is designed based on the semantic segmentation results. This method addresses the last step of the extraction results oriented to the PV potential assessment, and this paper is validated in Beijing, China, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Wildfire is one of the main hazards affecting large areas and causes great damage all over the world, and the rapid development of the wildland-urban interface (WUI) increases the threat of wildfires that have ecological, social, and economic consequences. As one of the most widely used methods for tracking fire, remote sensing can provide valuable information about fires, but it is not always available, and needs to be supplemented by data from other sources. Social media is an emerging but underutilized data source for emergency management, contains a wealth of disaster information, and reflects the public's real-time witness and feedback to fires. In this paper, we propose a fusion framework of multi-source data analysis, including social media data and remote sensing data, cellphone signaling data, terrain data, and meteorological data to track WUI fires. Using semantic web technology, the framework has been implemented as a Knowledge Base Service and runs on top of WUIFire ontology. WUIFire ontology represents WUI fire–related knowledge and consists of three modules: system, monitoring, and spread, and tracks wildfires happening in WUIs. It provides a basis for tracking and analyzing a WUI fire by fusing multi-source data. To showcase the utility of our approach in a real-world scenario, we take the fire in the Yaji Mountain Scenic Area, Beijing, China, in 2019 as a case study. With object information identified from remote sensing, fire situation information extracted from Weibo, and fire perimeters constructed through fire spread simulation, a knowledge graph is constructed and an analysis using a semantic query is carried out to realize situational awareness and determine countermeasures. The effective refuge area is a key indicator in the study of emergency shelters. Accurately extracting the effective refuge area and analyzing the effectiveness of emergency shelters are of great significance for site selection, spatial distribution, and the evaluation of suitability. Beijing is one of only three capitals in the world located in a high-seismic-intensity zone of magnitude 8. The fast and accurate monitoring of effective refuge areas and an analysis of the effectiveness of emergency shelters are conducive to evacuation planning and disaster prevention and mitigation, and they promote the construction of a resilient city. However, the extraction of effective refuge areas in existing studies is not only a time-consuming and labor-intensive task but also has accuracy and efficiency problems, resulting in less precise validity analyses. In this paper, a remote sensing monitoring technology system for the effective refuge areas of emergency shelters is proposed based on multi-source data. Different methods were used to extract various land features, such as buildings and collapsed areas, water, dense areas of understory vegetation, and steep slope areas that cannot be evacuated, to obtain the effective refuge area at a detailed scale, in combination with the service radius of emergency shelters, the population distribution, and the actual road network, the criteria for effectiveness analysis were established for the effective open space ratio, capacity, per capita accessible effective refuge area, and population allocation gap. Taking the area within the Fifth Ring Road of Beijing as an example, the effectiveness of emergency shelters was analyzed at both the whole scale and a local scale. The results show that the effective refuge areas of different emergency shelters in Beijing vary significantly, with the smallest effective refuge area being located in Rings 2–3 and the largest one being located in Rings 4–5; between different regions, there are differences in the effectiveness. This study provides a feasible method for the fast, accurate, and detailed extraction of the effective refuge areas of emergency shelters and also provides a reference for emergency planning for disaster prevention and mitigation. The sustainable development goals (SDGs) reflect the pursuit of achieving spatial justice. Both SDG 1.4 and SDG 11.1 reflect a concern for urban services. Life service resources, which are the new concept proposed by the Chinese government, also call for sustainable development path. However, few studies have focused on the realization of spatial justice in life service resources. This paper proposes a two-level, four-step analysis framework composed of quantity, structure, pattern, and coupling coordination to perceive the spatial justice of life service resources. Based on remote sensing technology and geographic information science, this paper acquires and analyses multi-source data including population density, building outlines, point of interests, subway lines, etc. Furthermore, the case study in downtown Beijing found the following: (1) The total life service resources are extensive and varying in type; (2) regional differences are evident and low-level equilibrium and high-level priority development coexist; (3) life service resources are concentrated in contiguous and multi-centre clusters with a greater north–south than east–west difference; (4) the overall level of life service resources is low, specifically for "high in the centre and low in the periphery" and "high in the east and low in the west". Future management should consider narrowing the development gap and formulating industry development plans to improve spatial justice. Nighttime PM2.5 detection by remote sensing can expand understanding of PM2.5 spatiotemporal patterns due to wider coverage compared to ground monitors and by supplementing traditional daytime detection. However, using remote sensing data to invert PM2.5 at night is still challenging. Compared with daytime detection, which operates on sunlight, nighttime detection operates on much weaker moonlight and artificial light sources, complicating signal extraction. Moreover, as the attempts to sense PM2.5 remotely using satellite data are relatively recent, the existing nighttime models are still not mature, overlooking many important factors such as stray light, seasonality in meteorological effects, and observation angle. This paper attempts to improve the accuracy of nighttime PM2.5 detection by proposing an inversion model that takes these factors into consideration. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite/Day/Night Band (VIIRS/DNB) on board the polar-orbiting Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration-20 (NOAA-20) was used to establish a nighttime PM2.5 inversion model in the Beijing area from 1 March 2018 to 28 February 2019. The model was designed by first studying the effects of these factors through a stepwise regression, then building a multivariate regression model to compensate for these effects. The results showed that the impact of satellite viewing zenith angle (VZA) was strongest, followed by seasonality and moonlight. Total accuracy was measured using correlation coefficient (R) compared to ground measurements, achieving 0.87 over the urban area and 0.74 over the suburbs. Specifically, the proposed method works efficiently at subsatellite points, which in this case correspond to VZA from 0 and 5°. In spring, summer, autumn, and winter, the R reached 0.95, 0.93, 0.94, and 0.97 at subsatellite points in the urban area, while it was 0.88, 0.82, 0.85, and 0.77 in the suburbs. Quickly obtaining accurate soil quality information is the premise for accurate agricultural production and increased crop yield. With the development of the digital information industry, smart agriculture has become a new trend in agricultural development and there is increasing demand for efficiently and intelligently acquiring good soil quality information. Scientists worldwide have developed many remote sensing quantitative inversion models, which need to be systematized and intelligent for agricultural personnel to enjoy the dividends of information technology such as 3S (remote sensing, geographic information system, and global navigation satellite system) techniques. Accordingly, to meet the need of farmers, agricultural managers, and agricultural researchers to acquire timely information on regional soil quality, in this paper, we designed a cloud platform for inversion analysis of moisture, nutrient, salinity, and other important soil quality indicators. The platform was developed using ArcGIS (The software is produced by the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. of America in Redlands, CL, USA) and GeoScene (The software is produced by GeoScene Information Technology Co.,Ltd., Beijing, China) software, with Java and JavaScript as programing languages and SQL Server as the database management system with a PC client, a web client, and a mobile app. On the basis of the existing quantitative remote sensing models, the platform realizes mapping functions, intelligent inversion of soil moisture–nutrient–salinity (SMNS) content, data analysis mining, soil knowledge base, platform management, and so on. It can help different users acquire, manage, and analyze data and make decisions based on the data. In addition, the platform can customize model parameters according to regional characteristics, improving analysis accuracy and expanding the application area. Overall, the platform employs 3S techniques, Internet technology, and mobile communication technology synthetically and realizes intelligent inversion and decision analysis of significant soil quality information, such as moisture–nutrient–salinity content. This platform has been applied to the analysis of soil indicators in several areas and has produced good operational results and benefits. In recent years, the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region has become one of the worst areas for haze pollution in China. Sun photometers are widely used for aerosol optical property monitoring due to the advantages of fully automatic acquisition, simple maintenance, standardization of data processing, and low uncertainty. Research sites are mostly concentrated in cities, while the long-term analysis of aerosol optical depth (AOD) for the pollution transmission channel in rural Beijing is still lacking. Here, we obtained an AOD monitoring dataset from August 2017 to March 2019 using the ground-based CE-318 sun photometer at the Gucheng meteorological observation site in southwest Beijing. These sun photometer AOD data were used for the ground-based validation of MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and AHI (Advanced Himawari Imager) AOD data. It was found that MODIS and AHI can reflect AOD variation trends by sun photometer on daily, monthly, and seasonal scales. The original AOD measurements of the sun photometer show good correlations with satellite observations by MODIS (R = 0.97), and AHI (R = 0.89), respectively, corresponding to their different optimal spatial and temporal windows for matching with collocated satellite ground pixels. However, MODIS is less stable for aerosols of different concentrations and particle sizes. Most of the linear regression intercepts between the satellite and the photometer are less than 0.1, indicating that the errors due to surface reflectance in the inversion are small, and the slope is least biased (AHI: slope = 0.91, MODIS: slope = 0.18) in the noon period (11 a.m.–2 p.m.) and most biased in summer (AHI: slope = 0.77, MODIS: slope = 1.31), probably due to errors in the aerosol model. The daily and seasonal variation trends between CE-318 AOD measurements in the Gucheng site and fine particulate observations from the national air quality site nearby were also compared and investigated. In addition, a typical haze–dust complex pollution event in North China was analyzed and the changes in AOD during the pollution event were quantified. In processing, we use sun photometer and satellite AOD data in combination with meteorological and PM data. Overall, this paper has implications for the study of AOD evolution patterns at different time scales, the association between PM2.5 concentrations and AOD changes, and pollution monitoring. Timely and accurate survey of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) distribution is of significance for managing C&DW and enhancing the quality of the urban environment, especially in rapidly urbanizing country of China. Automatic C&DW recognition using high-resolution remote sensing images is an extremely important surveying method. Existing C&DW recognition methods can only obtain a rough spatial distribution of C&DW. Mapping precise C&DW distribution on large-scale remote sensing images is still challenging. In this paper, to solve the problem of precise C&DW recognition, a novel deep learning algorithm based on high-resolution remote sensing images is proposed, which we refer to as the cross-channel multi-scale gated fusion network (CCMGNet). CCMGNet extracts depth features of C&DW from RGB and NIR bands by using two independent encoding streams. A gated fusion layer and a multi-scale attention module are designed to effectively fuse the features from two encoding streams. We manually labelled the sample set used for training and testing on 26 remote sensing images captured by the Gaofen-2 (GF-2) satellite. These images were taken in nine typical cities in China over the time period from 2019 to 2021. The results showed that the proposed method is effective in recognizing C&DW, realizing 89.42% and 84.52% in precision and IoU, and is superior to other state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms and existing C&DW recognition methods. The effectiveness of all significant components in CCMGNet was confirmed by ablation experiments. The proposed method was applied to extract C&DW regions in large-scale remote sensing images, with an example of a GF-2 image of Beijing. The high extraction efficiency and satisfactory visual effect demonstrate the potential of the proposed method for surveying the spatial distribution of C&DW. The reflectance anisotropy of land surface serves as an important bridge between surface biophysical parameters and remote sensing observations. It can characterize by the linear kernel-driven bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), which is the combination of several kernel functions and kernel weights. These kernel weights can be estimated by remote sensing; however, the stability of current kernel weights products is still challenging, especially in urban areas with complex aerosol properties and heterogeneous surfaces. In this paper, we propose a method for robust estimation of kernel weights from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface spectral reflectance products (MxD09GA) data based on the constrained least-squares method (CLSM) and a priori knowledge. The kernel weights data were obtained by the CLSM from 2014 to 2017 in Beijing region of China. Validations were carried out using the MxD09GA and BRDF/Albedo products (MCD43A1). The results show that the time series of kernel weights by the CLSM show small variability over different land cover types. The kernel weights estimated by the CLSM can clearly show the phenological signal and fitting ability of surface spectral reflectance is better than that of the MCD43A1 products in Beijing urban area. Spatial identification of the urban-rural fringes is very significant for deeply understanding the development processes and regulations of urban space and guiding urban spatial development in the future. Traditionally, urban-rural fringe areas are identified using statistical analysis methods that consider indexes from single or multiple factors, such as population densities, the ratio of building land, the proportion of the non-agricultural population, and economic levels. However, these methods have limitations, for example, the statistical data are not continuous, the statistical standards are not uniform, the data is seldom available in real time, and it is difficult to avoid issues on the statistical effects from edges of administrative regions or express the internal differences of these areas. This paper proposes a convenient approach to identify the urban-rural fringe using nighttime light data of DMSP/OLS images. First, a light characteristics-combined value model was built in ArcGIS 10.3, and the combined characteristics of light intensity and the degree of light intensity fluctuation are analyzed in the urban, urban-rural fringe, and rural areas. Then, the Python programming language was used to extract the breakpoints of the characteristic combination values of the nighttime light data in 360 directions taking Tian An Men as the center. Finally, the range of the urban-rural fringe area is identified. The results show that the urban-rural fringe of Beijing is mainly located in the annular band around Tian An Men. The average inner radius is 19 km, and the outer radius is 26 km. The urban-rural fringe includes the outer portions of the four city center districts, which are the Chaoyang District, Haidian District, Fengtai District, and Shijingshan District and the part area border with Daxing District, Tongzhou District, Changping District, Mentougou District, Shunyi District, and Fangshan District. The area of the urban-rural fringe is approximately 765 km². This paper provides a convenient, feasible, and real-time approach for the identification of the urban-rural fringe areas. Mixed use has been extensively applied as an urban planning principle and hinders the study of single urban functions. To address this problem, it is worth decomposing the mixed use. Inspired by the concept of spectral unmixing in remote sensing applications, this paper proposes a framework for mixed-use decomposition based on big geo-data. Mixed-use decomposition in terms of human activities differs from traditional land use research, and it is more reasonable to infer the actual urban function of land. The framework consists of four steps, namely temporal activity signature extraction, urban function base curve extraction, mixed-use decomposition, and result validation. First, the temporal activity signatures (TASs) of each zone are extracted as the proxy of human activity patterns. Second, the diurnal TASs of routine activities are extracted as urban function base curves (i.e. endmembers). Third, a linear decomposition model is used to decompose the mixed use and obtain multiple results (urban function composition, dynamic activity proportions, and the mixing index). Finally, result validation strategies are concluded. This framework offers method extensibility and has few requirements for the input data. Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has become a primary urban pollutant, seriously affecting air quality and resident health. Existing airborne remote sensing and ground sensor monitoring can efficiently collect PM2.5 data. It is urgent yet challenging to fully use these two monitoring modes to analyze the spatial distribution and dynamic changes of PM2.5. This paper proposes a method to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of urban PM2.5 concentration using airborne and ground monitoring data. The method utilizes the boundary dimension and the radius dimension to describe the spatial distribution characteristics of PM2.5 and then adopts wavelet analysis to detect the fluctuation periods of PM2.5 concentration. Case study was performed based on the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data and the daily ground monitoring concentration of PM2.5 from 2014 to 2017 in Beijing. The decrease results of boundary dimension indicate that the changes in PM2.5 concentration tend to be slower over time, and the fluctuation amplitude gradually becomes smaller. The increase results closer to 2.0 in the radius dimensions suggest that the PM2.5 distribution becomes more uniform, indicating that the pollution control in Beijing had achieved initial success. The frequency results of wavelet analysis reveal that PM2.5 concentration in Beijing is mainly subject to periodic variation of 190 days. Urban black and odorous water (BOW) is a serious global environmental problem. Since these waters are often narrow rivers or small ponds, the detection of BOW waters using traditional satellite data and algorithms is limited both by a lack of spatial resolution and by imperfect retrieval algorithms. In this paper, we used the Chinese high-resolution remote sensing satellite Gaofen-2 (GF-2, 0.8 m). The atmospheric correction showed that the mean absolute percentage error of the derived remote sensing reflectance ($R_{\mathrm {rs}}$) in visible bands is 25.19%. We first measured $R_{\mathrm {rs}}$ spectra of two classes of BOW [BOW with high concentrations of iron (II) sulfide, i.e., BOW1 and BOW with high concentrations of total suspended matter, i.e., BOW2] and ordinary water in Shenyang. Then, in situ $R_{\mathrm {rs}}$ data were converted into $R_{\mathrm {rs}}$ corresponding to the wide GF-2 bands using the spectral response functions. We used the converted $R_{\mathrm {rs}}$ data to calculate several band combinations, including the baseline height, [ $R_{\mathrm {rs}}$ (green) $- R_{\mathrm {rs}}$ (red))/($R_{\mathrm {rs}}$ (green) $+ R_{\mathrm {rs}}$ (red)], and the color purity on a Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity diagram. The color purity was found to be the best index to extract BOW from ordinary water. Then, $R_{\mathrm {rs}}$ (645) was applied to categorize BOW into BOW1 and BOW2. We applied the algorithm to two synchronous GF-2 images. The recognition accuracy of BOW2 and ordinary water are both 100%. The extracted river water type near Weishanhu Road was BOW1, which agreed well with ground truth. The algorithm was further applied to other GF-2 data for Shenyang and Beijing. • The community livability evaluation is quantitative, practical and fine-grained. • The evaluation criteria span dimensions of environment, traffic and population. • Remote sensing, surface observation and geospatial big data are used. • Most communities are distributed within the central and marginal urban areas. • Communities in urban area tend to have robustly high livability. Effective evaluation of community livability is in urgent need to avoid increased livability at the expense of sustainability. However, studies concerning community livability evaluation were still conceptual, qualitative or conducted at city or regional scales. The availability of abundant, fine-grained, and multi-source data in the big data era laid the foundation for comprehensive livability evaluation at much finer scales. This paper proposed a quantitative and practical method for up-to-date livability evaluation at individual community scale in China. Nine evaluation criteria were identified spanning dimensions of environment, traffic, convenience, and population. These criteria were calculated respectively from remote sensing, surface observation and geospatial big data. The Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was applied for community livability evaluation, and the uncertainty and sensitivity of evaluation results were assessed. The livability evaluation in the case study area of Haidian District, Beijing, China demonstrated the practicality and effectiveness of the framework. A total number of 1242 communities in Haidian District were evaluated. Communities in urban area were generally associated with higher evaluation scores and lower uncertainties than those in rural area. The careful selection of criteria weights with high sensitivity, i.e., green space coverage within community and driving time to schools, can potentially significantly reduce the uncertainty of the livability evaluation. The community scale livability evaluation is expected to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementations of livability evaluation, and enables the development of more effective and locally specific regulations and policies to improve community livability. Urban scenes refer to city blocks which are basic units of megacities, they play an important role in citizens' welfare and city management. Remote sensing imagery with largescale coverage and accurate target descriptions, has been regarded as an ideal solution for monitoring the urban environment. However, due to the heterogeneity of remote sensing images, it is difficult to access their geographical content at the object level, let alone understanding urban scenes at the block level. Recently, deep learning-based strategies have been applied to interpret urban scenes with remarkable accuracies. However, the deep neural networks require a substantial number of training samples which are hard to satisfy, especially for high-resolution images. Meanwhile, the crowed-sourced Open Street Map (OSM) data provides rich annotation information about the urban targets but may encounter the problem of insufficient sampling (limited by the places where people can go). As a result, the combination of OSM and remote sensing images for efficient urban scene recognition is urgently needed. In this paper, we present a novel strategy to transfer existing OSM data to high-resolution images for semantic element determination and urban scene understanding. To be specific, the object-based convolutional neural network (OCNN) can be utilized for geographical object detection by feeding it rich semantic elements derived from OSM data. Then, geographical objects are further delineated into their functional labels by integrating points of interest (POIs), which contain rich semantic terms, such as commercial or educational labels. Lastly, the categories of urban scenes are easily acquired from the semantic objects inside. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method has an ability to classify complex urban scenes. The classification accuracies of the Beijing dataset are as high as 91% at the object-level and 88% at the scene level. Additionally, we are probably the first to investigate the object level semantic mapping by incorporating high-resolution images and OSM data of urban areas. Rapid urbanization has resulted in great changes in rural landscapes globally. Using remote sensing data to quantify the distribution of rural settlements and their changes has received increasing attention in the past three decades, but remains a challenge. Previous studies mostly focused on the residential changes within a grid or administrative boundary, but not at the individual village level. This paper presents a new change detection approach for rural residential settlements, which can identify different types of rural settlement changes at the individual village level by integrating remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) analyses. Using multi-temporal Landsat TM image data, this approach classifies villages into five types: “no change”, “totally lost”, “shrinking”, “expanding”, and “merged”, in contrast to the commonly used “increase” and “decrease”. This approach was tested in the Beijing metropolitan area from 1984 to 2010. Additionally, the drivers of such changes were investigated using multinomial logistic regression models. The results revealed that: (1) 36% of the villages were lost, but the total area of developed lands in existing villages increased by 34%; (2) Changes were dominated by the type of ‘expansion’ in 1984–1990 (accounted for 43.42%) and 1990–2000 (56.21%). However, from 2000 to 2010, 49.73% of the villages remained unchanged; (3) Both topographical factors and distance factors had significant effects on whether the villages changed or not, but their impacts changed through time. The topographical driving factors showed decreasing effects on the loss of rural settlements, while distance factors had increasing impacts on settlement expansion and merging. Urban heat island ( UHI) effect is an important impact factor of the regional climate and ecological environment. How to observe and analyse the spatial distribution of UHI has become an important issue of urban environmental research. In this paper, the near-surface air temperature of Beijing was derived based on the Landsat/ TM satellite imagery on 26 July 2011 to study the near-surface UHI. A statistical model at 195-m window size was established to estimate the air temperature, using land surface temperature, normalized difference vegetation index, altitude, and surface albedo as independent variables. The mean absolute error ( MAE) of the model was 0.87°C, and the R2 was 0.66, indicating that the method can be used to effectively estimate the air temperature. The air temperature distribution obtained from remote sensing revealed that the UHI effect in Beijing was very significant and showed a concentrated pattern. The heat island intensity was stronger in the southern part than in the northern part of the city. In addition, the relationship between the air temperature and impervious surfaces was analysed. The air temperature increased with increasing impervious surface coverage, and the rate of change depended on the impervious surface coverage. When the impervious surface coverage was below 40 per cent, the temperature increased rapidly with increasing impervious surface coverage, and when the impervious surface coverage was above 40 per cent, the temperature increased slowly. This study provides a new approach to monitor near-surface UHI and reveals its relationship with impervious surface, providing a scientific reference for urban planning and environmental assessment. Advanced techniques of multi-temporal InSAR (MT-InSAR) represent a valuable tool in ground subsidence studies allowing remote investigation of the behavior of mass movements in long time intervals by using large datasets of SAR images covering the same area and acquired at different epochs. The settlement in Beijing is very serious, producing adverse environmental impacts. Excessive groundwater withdrawal is the most direct cause of land subsidence.In this paper, a spatial-temporal analysis of the land subsidence in Beijing was performed using one of the MT-InSAR techniques, referred to as Small Baseline Subset (SBAS). This technique allows monitoring the temporal evolution of a deformation phenomenon, via the generation of mean deformation velocity maps and displacement time series from a data set of acquired SAR images. 52 C-band ENVISAT ASAR images acquired from June 2003 to August 2010 were used to produce a linear deformation rate map and to derive time series of ground deformation. The results show that there are three large subsidence funnels within this study area, which separately located in Balizhuang-Dajiaoting in Chaoyang district, Wangjing-Laiguangying Chaoyang district, Gaoliying Shunyi district. The maximum settlement center is Wangsiying-Tongzhou along the Beijing express; the subsidence velocity exceeds 110 mm/y in the LOS direction. In particular, we compared the achieved results with leveling measurements that are assumed as reference. The estimated long-term subsidence results obtained by SBAS approach agree well with the development of the over-exploitation of ground water, indicating that SBAS techniques is adequate for the retrieval of land subsidence in Beijing from multi-temporal SAR data. This paper introduces a new algorithm (BUNTUS—Built-up, Nighttime Light, and Travel time for Urban Size) using remote sensing techniques to delineate urban boundaries. The paper is part of a larger study of the role of urbanisation in changing fossil fuel emissions. The method combines estimates of land cover, nighttime lights, and travel times to classify contiguous urban areas. The method is automatic, global and uses data sets with enough duration to establish trends. Validation using ground truth from Landsat-8 OLI images revealed an overall accuracy ranging from 60% to 95%. Thus, this approach is capable of describing spatial distributions and giving detailed information of urban extents. We demonstrate the method with examples from Brisbane, Australia, Melbourne, Australia, and Beijing, China. The new method meets the criteria for studying overall trends in urban emissions. Spatial sampling design is important for accurately assessing land use and land cover (LULC) classification results from remote sensing data. Spatial stratification can dramatically improve spatial sampling efficiency by dividing the study area into several strata when classification correctness is spatially stratified heterogeneous. By integrating the LULC classification results from different sources and spatial resolutions, a spatial stratification method for spatial sampling of accuracy assessment is presented in this paper. Its efficiency is demonstrated in the case study using LULC data of Beijing, China, in the following steps. First, we standardized and reclassified multiresolution remote sensing data, including China's land use/cover datasets (CLUDs) from 2017 (resolution: 30 m), 500 m MCD12Q1, and 10 m FROM-GLC10 data, into six classes. Second, we customized stratification rules, formulated a technical specification to realize 11 strata using CLUDs and MCD12Q1, and employed FROM-GLC10 as the reference data for accuracy assessment. Furthermore, six sample sets with sizes of 16,417; 1821; 652; 337; 198; and 142 were drawn using different methods, and their overall accuracy (OA), deviation accuracy (DA), root-mean-square error (RMSE), and standard deviation (STDEV) values were also evaluated to demonstrate the efficiency brought by spatial stratification. Compared with the spatial even sampling method, the OAs of the stratified even sampling method adopting the proposed stratification method was much closer to the true OA, and the corresponding RMSE and STDEV results decreased from 2.097% and 2.127% to 0.914% and 0.713%, respectively, due to the contribution of spatial stratification in the sampling scheme. The method can be used to distinguish the differences and improve the representativeness of samples, and it can be employed to select validation samples for LULC classification. Lidar is a powerful active remote sensing technique to monitor the planetary boundary layer (PBL), and there have already been many algorithms to retrieve the planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) using aerosol lidars. However, the algorithm suitable for all atmospheric conditions doesn't exist. This study evaluates the capability of nine lidar algorithms under different pollution scenarios in terms of the instantaneous performance and the diurnal evolution, which are derived from classical theories and expressed as GM, LGM, CRGM, IPM, VAR, VGM, WCT, WCTD, and POLARIS in this paper. Based on the nine algorithms, the continuous PBLHs are obtained from the observation dataset of a Beijing urban site in 2017. In order to verify the lidar results, the statical comparison analysis with radiosonde is also presented. On the premise of the inversion hypothesis, such as sufficient mixing in the PBL, the consistency of lidar results was the best, with the difference being not more than 200 m. And what's different from our cognition is that the concentration of pollutants near the ground under the light pollution condition makes the lidar results tend to be consistent. In fact, LGM prefers to get higher PBLHs because of filtering the information near the ground, whereas POLARIS is apt to underestimate unless the actual morphology can be captured by the depolarization ratio. VAR and IPM are more vulnerable to the conspicuous stratification. GM, CRGM, and WCTD have better consistency with radiosonde and capture the evolution characteristic no matter in clean or polluted days. Compared with the clean days, PBLH from lidar algorithms under the polluted condition reduced about 500 m overall, as well as the standard deviation. Generally speaking, the comprehensive comparison provides a reference to choose the proper lidar algorithm when retrieving the PBLH. GM is appropriate for the detection of clean days, while CRGM is robust for polluted days. WCTD is more suitable for the judgment of PBLH in the morning and evening and will underestimate at noon. In the acceleration of industrialization and urbanization, brownfield is an important resource for land regeneration and restoration targeting to recover its ecosystem function. Landfills, as a type of brownfield distributed in the highly populated areas, occupy massive land resources. The ecological restoration of landfills becomes an engineering approach to achieve multiple effects of society, environment, and economy. This paper aims to monitor and assess the restoration microclimatic effects of landfills restoration in China with remote sensing data and techniques. We selected representative landfill restoration projects, including Nanhaizi Park in Beijing, Nanhu Park in Tangshan, and Tianziling Park in Hangzhou, as the study cases. Using the Landsat imagery, the scenes of the pre-restoration, mid-restoration, and post-restoration were retrieved, and the surface energy balance equation was applied to calculate normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), land surface temperature (T s), and evapotranspiration (ET), representing vegetation conditions and hydro-heat microclimate conditions. The study areas are divided into four subzones and extracted the calculated values for statistics and comparison. We defined an indicator of restoration intensity (RI) using the different subzones to the outer contour distance radius and restoration phases to evaluate the spatial-temporal restoration degrees. The spatial pattern dynamics was displayed in the urbanization context in the cases of Beijing and Tangshan. We examined and quantified the relations between RI and the key indicators, NDVI, T s , and ET. The overall results revealed that with higher restoration intensity, NDVI and ET became higher, and T s became lower. It suggested that the ecological restoration on the landfills brought better vegetation, cooling, and humidification effects for the microclimatic environment. Our research has the implications for monitoring and assessing the climatic effects of ecological restoration in the brownfield regeneration in a macroscopic and ecosystem perspective. The segmentation of high-resolution (HR) remote sensing images is very important in modern society, especially in the fields of industry, agriculture and urban modelling. Through the neural network, the machine can effectively and accurately extract the surface feature information. However, using the traditional deep learning methods requires plentiful efforts in order to find a robust architecture. In this paper, we introduce a neural network architecture search (NAS) method, called NAS-HRIS, which can automatically search neural network architecture on the dataset. The proposed method embeds a directed acyclic graph (DAG) into the search space and designs the differentiable searching process, which enables it to learn an end-to-end searching rule by using gradient descent optimization. It uses the Gumbel-Max trick to provide an efficient way when drawing samples from a non-continuous probability distribution, and it improves the efficiency of searching and reduces the memory consumption. Compared with other NAS, NAS-HRIS consumes less GPU memory without reducing the accuracy, which corresponds to a large amount of HR remote sensing imagery data. We have carried out experiments on the WHUBuilding dataset and achieved 90.44% MIoU. In order to fully demonstrate the feasibility of the method, we made a new urban Beijing Building dataset, and conducted experiments on satellite images and non-single source images, achieving better results than SegNet, U-Net and Deeplab v3+ models, while the computational complexity of our network architecture is much smaller. Remote sensing data have been widely used in research on population spatialization. Previous studies have generally divided study areas into several sub-areas with similar features by artificial or clustering algorithms and then developed models for these sub-areas separately using statistical methods. These approaches have drawbacks due to their subjectivity and uncertainty. In this paper, we present a study of population spatialization in Beijing City, China based on multisource remote sensing data and town-level population census data. Six predictive algorithms were compared for estimating population using the spatial variables derived from The National Polar-Orbiting Partnership/ Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP/VIIRS) night-time light and other remote sensing data. Random forest achieved the highest accuracy and therefore was employed for population spatialization. Feature selection was performed to determine the optimal variable combinations for population modeling by random forest. Cross-validation results indicated that the developed model achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2129.52 people/km2 and a R2 of 0.63. The gridded population density in Beijing at a spatial resolution of 500 m produced by the random forest model was also adjusted to be consistent with the census population at the town scale. By comparison with Google Earth high-resolution images, the remotely-sensed population was qualitatively validated at the intra-town scale. Validation results indicated that remotely sensed results can effectively depict the spatial distribution of population within town-level districts. The efficient and accurate application of deep learning in the remote sensing field largely depends on the pre-processing technology of remote sensing images. Particularly, image fusion is the essential way to achieve the complementarity of the panchromatic band and multispectral bands in high spatial resolution remote sensing images. In this paper, we not only pay attention to the visual effect of fused images, but also focus on the subsequent application effectiveness of information extraction and feature recognition based on fused images. Based on the WorldView-3 images of Tongzhou District of Beijing, we apply the fusion results to conduct the experiments of object recognition of typical urban features based on deep learning. Furthermore, we perform a quantitative analysis for the existing pixel-based mainstream fusion methods of IHS (Intensity-Hue Saturation), PCS (Principal Component Substitution), GS (Gram Schmidt), ELS (Ehlers), HPF (High-Pass Filtering), and HCS (Hyper spherical Color Space) from the perspectives of spectrum, geometric features, and recognition accuracy. The results show that there are apparent differences in visual effect and quantitative index among different fusion methods, and the PCS fusion method has the most satisfying comprehensive effectiveness in the object recognition of land cover (features) based on deep learning.
