Oil painting education not only helps to improve students' drawing skills and quality but also fosters creative thinking in the field of art. In order to keep up with the development of art diversity, it is essential to establish the concept of art diversity education and reform university oil painting education to meet the needs of modern society. This study aims to explore the potential value of image optical processing technology based on computer vision in the application of oil painting teaching image simulation. In order to improve students' ability of oil painting simulation, this paper presents an image optical processing technology based on computer vision. The study collected a large number of oil painting images and teaching samples. Then, through image processing algorithm, we extract and analyze the optical features in the oil painting works, and then design an optical simulation method to apply these features to the students' simulation works. By comparing the traditional methods and the techniques proposed in this paper, the image optical processing technology based on computer vision has potential practical value in the application of oil painting teaching image simulation, which can help students better understand and simulate the optical effects of traditional oil paintings. In order to understand the application of frost measurement of air source heat pump heat exchanger, a research on frost measurement of air source heat pump heat exchanger based on image recognition processing technology is put forward. In this paper, the scheme design of defrosting control system based on image processing technology is introduced, and the frost degree coefficient of outdoor heat exchanger fin surface is introduced to characterize the frost degree of fin surface. Secondly, the experimental environment room was built, and the conventional defrosting control method of the existing heat pump unit was tested on the spot. It was found that in the air temperature of -6~0 °C and the air relative humidity of 86~92%, the unit appeared the phenomenon of "defrosting in time" and "defrosting without frost". Finally, the change of frost layer on the surface of the outdoor heat exchanger fin during defrosting is analyzed, and the coefficient of frost degree on the surface of the fin is calculated and analyzed. At the beginning of defrosting, due to the large degree of frost, the P-value of the frost degree coefficient on the surface of the fin is close to 1, when the defrosting is carried out for 125 seconds, the P-value of the frost degree coefficient on the surface of the fin decreases sharply to 0.09, when the defrosting is completed, the P-value of the frost degree coefficient on the surface of the outdoor heat exchanger is maintained at about 0.04. The defrosting control method of air source heat pump based on image processing technology is proposed in this paper, and its technical feasibility and effect are verified by experimental tests, which lays a foundation for future popularization and application. Deep Self-Attention Network (Transformer) is an encoder–decoder architectural model that excels in establishing long-distance dependencies and is first applied in natural language processing. Due to its complementary nature with the inductive bias of convolutional neural network (CNN), Transformer has been gradually applied to medical image processing, including kidney image processing. It has become a hot research topic in recent years. To further explore new ideas and directions in the field of renal image processing, this paper outlines the characteristics of the Transformer network model and summarizes the application of the Transformer-based model in renal image segmentation, classification, detection, electronic medical records, and decision-making systems, and compared with CNN-based renal image processing algorithm, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of this technique in renal image processing. In addition, this paper gives an outlook on the development trend of Transformer in renal image processing, which provides a valuable reference for a lot of renal image analysis. Given the abundance of images related to operations that are being captured and stored, it behooves firms to innovate systems using image processing to improve operational performance that refers to any activity that can save labor cost. In this paper, we use deep learning techniques, combined with classic image/signal processing methods, to propose a pipeline to solve certain types of object counting and layer characterization problems in firm operations. Using data obtained by us through a collaborative effort with real manufacturers, we demonstrate that the proposed pipeline method is able to achieve higher than 93% accuracy in layer and log counting. Theoretically, our study conceives, constructs, and evaluates proof of concept of a novel pipeline method in characterizing and quantifying the number of defined items with images, which overcomes the limitations of methods based only on deep learning or signal processing. Practically, our proposed method can help firms significantly reduce labor costs and/or improve quality and inventory control by recording the number of products in real time, more accurately and with minimal up-front technological investment. Since its inception, salient object detection has been widely used in various image processing tasks. However, previous approaches have mainly focused on how to optimize the accuracy of detection, ignoring the computational overhead of the model itself. This makes it difficult to be used in many devices with limited hardware conditions. To address the above problems, this paper proposes a lightweight saliency detection network based on background denoising and feature generation. First, we build a lightweight feature extraction network by improving the MobileNetV3 feature extraction part and with the help of a multidimensional focus module. Subsequently, in order to fully explore the difference between the background and the salient objects. We insert a noise suppression subnet at the end of the encoder. This subnetwork uses the learned background features to reverse fuse the information from the backbone network, effectively decreasing the amount of background noise and encouraging the model to better distinguish subtle differences between salient objects and the background. Finally, in the decoding stage this paper constructs a feature generator that allows the model to efficiently extend the feature map with little increase in the number of parameters. Thereby, it compensates for the lack of expression capability of lightweight model features. In this paper, liquid-crystal spatial light modulators are presented for precise dynamic manipulation of coherent light fields in space, which are used in diffractive optoelectronic and optical data processing systems. In addition, this paper presents the results of the temporal dynamics study of the HoloEye PLUTO‑2 VIS-016 liquid-crystal spatial light modulator for light field rate modulation analysis. Experiments using binary phase computer-generated holograms and binary focusing phase diffractive optical elements are performed. The time characteristics of the modulator response are determined from the experimental data. Displaying the diffraction structure model on the screen of the spatial light modulator results in a rise time of the diffraction efficiency of 146 ms, and switching to a new model leads to a decay time of 97 ms. The obtained results allow implementing the dynamic generation of an alternating diffraction field at 2 Hz update frequency with −16 dB interference level. Increasing the frequency of updating diffraction structure models increases the level of interframe noise in the generated diffraction field, and when updating with the frequency indicated in the specification, separating the generated distributions is virtually impossible. From the presented results, the studied modulator model can be applied for high-precision formation of complex diffraction fields with a frame update rate lower than stated. Determining the actual frame rate from the rise and decay times of diffraction efficiency allows correctly determining the minimum operating time of an information optical system with a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. The contemporary industry has witnessed a significant transformative development with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in various industrial systems, resulting in an enhanced automation for heightened productivity and efficiency. However, mastering this level of automation can be challenging for some applications, such as manufacturing inspection, which can be delicate while maintaining a precise cadence for an in-line manufacturing scale. In this paper, a systematic machine vision-based approach for on-machine inspection is proposed in order to automate and improve inspection process towards computer numerical control (CNC) machined parts. The approach incorporates remapping algorithm and image processing operations to accurately extract desired features. Subsequently, these features will undergo dimensional inspection based on their generated point clouds. Tests were applied on a sample part using a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) camera mounted on the spindle of 5-axis CNC machining center. The paper explores numerous aspects related to different stages of the approach and their impact on the resulting inspected features evaluations. It also highlights significant findings regarding critical factors for conducting well-structured experiments at various stages. Livestock's live body dimensions are a pivotal indicator of economic output. Manual measurement is labor-intensive and time-consuming, often eliciting stress responses in the livestock. With the advancement of computer technology, the techniques for livestock live body dimension measurement have progressed rapidly, yielding significant research achievements. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in livestock live body dimension measurement, emphasizing the crucial role of computer-vision-based sensors. The discussion covers three main aspects: sensing data acquisition, sensing data processing, and sensing data analysis. The common techniques and measurement procedures in, and the current research status of, live body dimension measurement are introduced, along with a comparative analysis of their respective merits and drawbacks. Livestock data acquisition is the initial phase of live body dimension measurement, where sensors are employed as data collection equipment to obtain information conducive to precise measurements. Subsequently, the acquired data undergo processing, leveraging techniques such as 3D vision technology, computer graphics, image processing, and deep learning to calculate the measurements accurately. Lastly, this paper addresses the existing challenges within the domain of livestock live body dimension measurement in the livestock industry, highlighting the potential contributions of computer-vision-based sensors. The upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will carry out a wide-area survey in the near-infrared. A key science objective is the measurement of cosmic structure via weak gravitational lensing. Roman data will be undersampled, which introduces new challenges in the measurement of source galaxy shapes; a potential solution is to use linear algebra-based coaddition techniques such as imcom that combine multiple undersampled images to produce a single oversampled output mosaic with a desired 'target' point spread function (PSF). We present here an initial application of imcom to 0.64 square degrees of simulated Roman data, based on the Roman branch of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) Data Challenge 2 (DC2) simulation. We show that imcom runs successfully on simulated data that includes features such as plate scale distortions, chip gaps, detector defects, and cosmic ray masks. We simultaneously propagate grids of injected sources and simulated noise fields as well as the full simulation. We quantify the residual deviations of the PSF from the target (the 'leakage'), as well as noise properties of the output images; we discuss how the overall tiling pattern as well as Moiré patterns appear in the final leakage and noise maps. We include appendices on interpolation algorithms and the interaction of undersampling with image processing operations that may be of broader applicability. Spiking networks, as the third generation of neural networks, are of great interest today due to their low power consumption in cognitive processes. This important characteristic has caused the hardware implementation techniques of spiking networks in the form of neuromorphic systems attract a lot of attention. For the first time, the focus is on the digital implementation based on CORDIC approximation of the Hindmarsh–Rose (HR) neuron so that the hardware implementation cost is lower than previous studies. If the digital design of a neuron is done efficient, the possibility of implementing a population of neurons is provided for the feasibility of low-consumption implementation of high-level cognitive processes in hardware, which is considered in this paper through edge detector, noise removal and image magnification spiking networks based on the proposed CORDIC_HR model. While using less hardware resources, the proposed HR neuron model follows the behavior of the original neuron model in the time domain with much less error than previous study. Also, the complex nonlinear behavior of the original and the proposed model of HR neuron through the bifurcation diagram, phase space and nullcline space analysis under different system parameters was investigated and the good follow-up of the proposed model was confirmed from the original model. In addition to the fact that the individual behavior of the original and the proposed neurons is the same, the functional and behavioral performance of the randomly connected neuronal population of original and proposed neuron model is equal. In general, the main contribution of the paper is in presenting an efficient hardware model, which consumes less hardware resources, follows the behavior of the original model with high accuracy, and has an acceptable performance in image processing applications such as noise removal and edge detection. This paper presents a textile defect detection method that utilizes a multi‐proportion spatial attention mechanism and channel memory feature fusion network by addressing the difficulties presented by complicated shapes and large size variations. In particular, a multi‐proportion spatial attention mechanism (MPAM) is introduced, which employs multi‐proportion convolution to improve the backbone network's capacity to detect non‐uniform structural defects. Additionally, the generality and adaptability of the model are enhanced by a multi‐scale spatial pyramid pooling structure (MS‐SPP). Second, a channel attention mechanism‐based memory feature fusion network is developed, which incorporates channel attention to adaptive weight the feature channels, focusing on crucial information channels to efficiently fuse contextual features and enhance the model's memory capacity. Finally, a novel efficient Wise‐IoU (EWIoU) loss function is proposed, which utilizes a dynamic non‐monotonic focusing mechanism to increase the penalty on distance measurement, thus enhancing the model's detection performance. Experiment findings on the ZJU‐Leaper and Tianchi textile datasets reveal that compared to the YOLOv7 baseline, the method in this paper has an increase of 6.5 and 2 percentage points, respectively, and the detection accuracy is better than most existing networks. Human-Robot interaction plays a vital role in the service robotics field, especially to support old age-dependent people for socio-economic reasons. In this paper, an indigenous 3D printed 6 DoF robotic arm is proposed to support specially-abled people in their independent-feeding process. The objective of the present paper is to find the combination of optimal positional controllers such as CPID, FC, FPID and FOPID, which can handle the cubic reference input signal and can produce an output signal with minimal overshoot and lesser positional error. The reduced positional error helps the robotic arm to accurately reach the destination with minimal oscillations. This would reduce the wastage of food in the middle of the trajectory as well as at the destination. The technical challenge of the paper is to synchronize machine vision, robot kinematics and trajectory planning with robot control for multiple intermediate points, subjected to the cubic input signal. The feeding robotic arm is equipped with Intel© visual depth camera, which is in synchronization with the microcontroller, servo controller, and servo actuators. Here, six intermediate points were identified in the C-space using FK, among which, fuzzy controller was selected for the first two IPs, the GA optimized FOPID was selected for IP3 to IP5 and FPID was deployed for the last IP. The GA: FOPID produced a negligible overshoot of 0.67%, whereas FC and FPID produced an overshoot of 1.4% and 0.8% respectively. The positional error gap between GA: FOPID, FC and FPID was 0.9, and 0.6 Deg/sec respectively. The selection of combination of optimal controllers helps the manipulator to successfully deliver the food without wasting it. Paper-based microfluidics and sensors have attracted great attention. Although a large number of paper-based devices have been developed, surprisingly there are only a few studies investigating paper actuators. To fulfill the requirements for the integration of both sensors and actuators into paper, this work presents an unprecedented platform which utilizes ferromagnetic particles for actuation and graphite for motion monitoring. The use of the integrated mechanical sensing element eliminates the reliance on image processing for motion detection and also allows real-time measurements of the dynamic response in paper-based actuators. This review summarizes the strategies for improving the colorimetric performances (color intensity and uniformity) of PADs. In particular, the principles of controlling liquid-paper interaction for the color intensity enhancement, developed in printing research, are discussed in relation to PAD designs. The influence of the paper assaying environment to the paper assaying selectivity is discussed through a case study for the first time. Image capture techniques and image process algorithms are related to the accuracy and sensitivity of the colored results, which are carefully introduced. Finally, based on the tendency of improvement of colorimetric PADs for practical applications, we summarized the designs that enhance the portability of colorimetric PADs. Automatic authentication of paper money is becoming an increasingly urgent problem because of new and improved uses of counterfeits. In this paper, we describe a system developed for discriminating fake notes from genuine ones and apply it to Indian banknotes. Image processing and pattern recognition techniques are used to design the overall approach. The ability of the embedded security aspects is thoroughly analysed for detecting fake currencies. Real samples are used in the experiments that show a high-precision machine can be developed for authentication of paper money. The system performance is reported for both accuracy and processing speed. In our present study, we developed an optical biosensor for direct determination of salivary glucose by using immobilized glucose oxidase enzyme on filter paper strip (specific activity 1.4 U/strip) and then reacting it with synthetic glucose samples in presence of co-immobilized color pH indicator. The filter paper changed color based on concentration of glucose in reaction media and hence, by scanning this color change (using RGB profiling) through an office scanner and open source image processing software (GIMP) the concentration of glucose in the reaction medium could be deduced. Once the biosensor was standardized, the synthetic glucose sample was replaced with human saliva from donors. The individual's blood glucose level at the time of obtaining saliva was also measured using an Accuchek ™ active glucometer (Roche Inc.). In this preliminary study, a correlation of nearly 0.64 was found between glucose levels in saliva and blood of healthy individuals and in diabetic patients it was nearly in the order of 0.95, thereby validating the importance of salivary analysis. The authors present a comprehensive overview of image processing and analysis work done to support research into the model flowering plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Beside the plant's importance in biological research, using image analysis to obtain experimental measurements of it is an interesting vision problem in its own right, involving the segmentation and analysis of sequences of images of objects whose shape varies between individual specimens and also changes over time. While useful measurements can be obtained by segmenting a whole plant from the background, they suggest that the increased range and precision of measurements made available by leaf-level segmentation makes this a problem well worth solving. A variety of approaches have been tried by biologists as well as computer vision researchers. This is an interdisciplinary area and the computer vision community has an important contribution to make. They suggest that there is a need for publicly available datasets with ground truth annotations to enable the evaluation of new approaches and to support the building of training data for modern data-driven computer vision approaches, which are those most likely to result in the kind of fully automated systems that will be of use to biologists. Extracting offshore aquaculture areas from high-resolution remote sensing images is significant for rational planning and dynamic management of aquaculture. However, the complex and changeable characteristics of aquaculture areas will lead to difficulty during high-resolution image processing. In this paper, an improved U-Net deep learning model is proposed to extract offshore aquaculture areas from high-resolution images. This model is improved by the pyramid pooling module (PPM) and up-sampling structure based on the original U-Net model. PPM and the up-sampling structure can better mine semantic and position information in high-resolution images, reduce the interference and adhesion of information in images, and improve the extraction accuracy of unclear aquaculture areas. Based on Gaofen-2 remote sensing image data of Rongcheng Bay in the eastern waters of Weihai City, Shandong Province, the extraction of offshore aquaculture areas is studied. The results show that the F1 score and MIoU of the proposed network model are 93.63% and 87.93%, respectively. Cirrhosis is a liver disease resulting from abnormal continuation of fibrosis, and ultrasound imaging is widely used for cirrhosis diagnosis because of its non‐invasiveness. However, due to unclear appearances of cirrhosis on ultrasound images, diagnoses are difficult and individual results possibly differ depending on the physician's experience. Recently, computer‐aided diagnostic systems using image processing and machine learning have been developed to help physicians detect cirrhosis as a 'Second opinion'. Some related studies have focused on a scenario where physicians set ROIs (Region of Interests) manually because selecting reliable ROIs for training a classifier and classification of patients is indispensable. But, the accuracy of such systems depends inherently on the quality of ROIs, and thus the workloads of physicians increase. In this paper, we propose a reliability evaluation method (REM) for each ROI based on its posterior probability and relationship to peripheral ROIs. The assumption of our proposal is that reliable regions of cirrhosis and normal can be observed in certain regions predominantly. We evaluated the effectiveness of the REM and its optimization for practical use. Clustering is an essential data exploration technique applied to many disciplines and applications such as data mining, image processing, bioinformatics, and machine learning. A clustering method identifies hidden patterns in a dataset and combines similar data points into clusters. The problems are challenging when they have many data points, attributes, and cluster partitions. In this paper, we propose an adaptive differential evolution with an archive strategy (ADEAS) to find candidate centroids and minimize their intra-cluster distance for solving partitional clustering problems. The archiving strategy stores inferior solutions during the selection operation to increase population diversity and create directions for guiding the search. The enhancement of low-quality images is both a challenging task and an essential endeavor in many fields including computer vision, computational photography, and image processing. In this paper, we propose a novel and fully explainable method for image enhancement that combines spatial selection and histogram equalization. Our approach leverages tree-search theory and deep reinforcement learning to iteratively select areas to be processed. Extensive experimentation on two datasets demonstrates the quality of our method compared to other state-of-the-art models. We also conducted a multi-user experiment which shows that our method can emulate a variety of enhancement styles. AbstractDespite the fact that most police departments in the U.S. serve jurisdictions with fewer than 10,000 residents, policing practices in small towns are understudied. This is due in part to data limitations and technological barriers that exist in the small-town context. In this paper we focus on one small town police department in New England with a history of misconduct, and develop a comprehensive data science pipeline that addresses the stages from design and collection to reporting. We present the reader with specific tools in the open-source Python ecosystem for replicating this pipeline. Once these data are processed, we perform two statistical analyses in an attempt to better understand the provisions of service by the small-town police department of focus. First, we perform ecological inference to estimate the rate at which residents are placing calls for service. Second, we model wait times using a negative binomal regression model to account for overdispersion in the data. Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is an additive manufacturing technology with high practical value. In order to improve the quality of the fabricated parts, process monitoring has become a crucial solution, offering the potential to ensure manufacturing stability and repeatability. However, a cardinal challenge involves discerning a precise correlation between process characteristics and potential defects. This paper elucidates the integration of an off-axis vision monitoring mechanism via a high-speed camera focused on capturing the single-track melting phenomenon. An innovative image processing method was devised to segment the plume and spatters, while Kalman filter was employed for multi-object tracking of the spatters. The features of both the plume and spatters were extracted, and their relationship with molten states was investigated. Finally, the PSO-XGBoost algorithm was utilized to identify five molten states, achieving an accuracy of 92.16%. The novelty of this approach resides in its unique combination of plume characteristics, spatter features, and computationally efficient machine learning models, which collectively address the challenge of limited field of view prevalent in real production scenarios, thereby enhancing process monitoring efficacy. Relative to existing methodologies, the proposed PSO-XGBoost approach offers heightened accuracy, convenience, and appropriateness for the monitoring of the LPBF process. Artistic style transfer involves the adaption of an input image to reflect the style of a reference image while maintaining its original content. This technique, now a prominent focus due to its prospective use in creative fields like digital art and graphic design, typically applies normalization techniques and attention mechanisms. While these methods yield decent results, they often fall short due to distortion of content image details and non‐artefact styles. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach that synergizes adaptive instance normalization (AdaIN), attention mechanisms, knowledge distillation (KD) and strategically placed internal layers, and new enhancements designed to preserve content details and provide a nuanced control over the style transfer process. We introduce a Detail Enhancement Module to amplify high‐frequency details in the content image, enhancing edge and texture preservation. A Multi‐scale Strategy is implemented to ensure uniform style application across various detail levels, leading to more coherent stylization. The Content Feature Refinement process refines content features, sharpening and emphasizing details to preserve structural and textural integrity. AdaIN's distinctive feature of efficiently collecting style data is exploited in our approach, coupled with attention mechanisms' inherent ability to conserve content information. We supplement this blend with KD for the enhancement of model accuracy and efficiency. Additionally, the introduction of internal layers acts as a conduit to further improve the style transfer process, increasing the transfer level of features and fostering better stylized results. In this paper, we describe a measurement procedure to fully characterise a novel vibration energy harvester operating in the ultra-low-frequency range. The procedure, which is more thorough than those usually found in the literature, comprises three main stages: modelling, experimental characterisation and parameter identification. Modelling is accomplished in two alternative ways, a physical model (white box) and a mixed one (black box), which model the magnetic interaction via Fourier series. The experimental measurements include not only the input (acceleration)–output (energy) response but also the (internal) dynamic behaviour of the system, making use of a synchronised image processing and signal acquisition system. The identification procedure, based on maximum likelihood, estimates all the relevant parameters to characterise the system to simulate its behaviour and helps to optimise its performance. In recent years, with the increasing demand for high-quality images in various fields, more and more attention has been focused on noise removal techniques for image processing. The effective elimination of unwanted noise plays a crucial role in improving image quality. To meet this challenge, many noise removal methods have been proposed, among which the diffusion model has become one of the focuses of many researchers. In order to make the restored image closer to the real image and retain more features of the image, this paper proposes a DIR-SDE method with reference to the diffusion models of IR-SDE and IDM, which improve the feature retention of the image in the de-raining process, and then improve the realism of the image for the image de-raining task. In this study, IR-SDE was used as the base structure of the diffusion model, IR-SDE was improved, and DINO-ViT was combined to enhance the image features. During the diffusion process, the image features were extracted using DINO-ViT, and these features were fused with the original images to enhance the learning effect of the model. The model was also trained and validated with the Rain100H dataset. Compared with the IR-SDE method, it improved 0.003 in the SSIM, 0.003 in the LPIPS, and 1.23 in the FID. Simple Summary: Breast cancer is a significant cause of female cancer-related deaths in the US. Checking how severe the cancer is helps in planning treatment. Modern AI methods are good at grading cancer, but they are not used much in hospitals yet. We developed and utilized ensemble deep learning algorithms for addressing the tasks of classifying (1) breast cancer subtype and (2) breast cancer invasiveness from whole slide image (WSI) histopathology slides. The ensemble models used were based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) known for extracting distinctive features crucial for accurate classification. Cancer diagnosis and classification are pivotal for effective patient management and treatment planning. In this study, a comprehensive approach is presented utilizing ensemble deep learning techniques to analyze breast cancer histopathology images. Our datasets were based on two widely employed datasets from different centers for two different tasks: BACH and BreakHis. Within the BACH dataset, a proposed ensemble strategy was employed, incorporating VGG16 and ResNet50 architectures to achieve precise classification of breast cancer histopathology images. Introducing a novel image patching technique to preprocess a high-resolution image facilitated a focused analysis of localized regions of interest. The annotated BACH dataset encompassed 400 WSIs across four distinct classes: Normal, Benign, In Situ Carcinoma, and Invasive Carcinoma. In addition, the proposed ensemble was used on the BreakHis dataset, utilizing VGG16, ResNet34, and ResNet50 models to classify microscopic images into eight distinct categories (four benign and four malignant). For both datasets, a five-fold cross-validation approach was employed for rigorous training and testing. Preliminary experimental results indicated a patch classification accuracy of 95.31% (for the BACH dataset) and WSI image classification accuracy of 98.43% (BreakHis). Multiplicative noise removal is a challenging image processing problem. In this paper, we study a fractional-order nonlinear cross-diffusion system to denoise images corrupted by multiplicative Gamma noise. The system is coupled by two nonlinear, partial differential equations and gray level information, fractional derivative operator is considered in diffusion process to remove high level noise effectively while preserve structure details for texture images and SAR images. We prove the existence of weak solutions and other theoretical properties of the fractional-order cross-diffusion system under some hypotheses. In the numerical aspect, the model is implemented by virtue of the discrete fractional Fourier transform in the frequency domain. Experimental results show that the new system has a good compromise between multiplicative noise removal and structure preservation when compared to other well-known denoising methods. The increased volume of images and galaxies surveyed by recent and upcoming projects consolidates the need for accurate and scalable automated AI-driven classification methods. This paper proposes a new algorithm based on a custom neural network architecture for classifying galaxies from deep space surveys. The convolutional neural network (CNN) presented is trained using 10,000 galaxy images obtained from the Galaxy Zoo 2 dataset. It is designed to categorize galaxies into five distinct classes: completely round smooth, in-between smooth (falling between completely round and cigar-shaped), cigar-shaped smooth, edge-on, and spiral. The performance of the proposed CNN is assessed using a set of metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and area under the curve. We compare our solution with well-known architectures like ResNet-50, DenseNet, EfficientNet, Inception, MobileNet, and one proposed model for galaxy classification found in the recent literature. Investigation of the mechanisms of soil liquefaction using imaging techniques from a mesoscopic perspective is essential for thorough characterization and quantification. However, the scope of this research has been limited by the growing knowledge of the mechanisms behind soil meso-liquefaction. Several approaches to soil meso-observation are currently available, but important issues such as the creation of an appropriate scheme, the determination of key meso-parameters, and the completion of quantitative studies remain unresolved. This article reviews the main roles and applications of meso-observation techniques, including meso-imaging systems, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray computed tomography (CT), in soil investigations. The evolution of soil particle meso-contact, changes in pore size and classification, long axis particle orientation and the influence of meso-parameters such as mean fractal dimension and directional probability entropy are highlighted. Finally, the paper analyses the challenges and development directions of soil meso-liquefaction observation methods and soil meso-liquefaction mechanism research. Soil meso-liquefaction mechanisms can be studied better with the help of a summary of the meso-observation techniques used in most liquefaction experiments. In order to acquire the necessary study parameters for the obtained image, the corresponding image processing methodologies were summarized. In recent years, low‐light image enhancement has become increasingly active. However, in underground mine environments, acquiring high‐quality images is still challenging due to low light, low contrast, and occlusion. To address this problem, this study proposes a low‐light image enhancement method for underground mine based on generative adversarial networks (UM‐GAN), which aims to take full advantage of the ability of GAN to achieve the restoration of details, the reduction of noise, and the improvement of overall image quality. The model proposed in this paper is divided into three main parts. Initially, a generator network adopting an encoder–decoder structure is developed. Subsequently, a novel strategy is introduced to merge information by utilizing inverted greyscale images and low‐light images as inputs. Further image quality enhancement is achieved by incorporating a noise reduction module employing the diffusion model. Slug flow processes draw much attention in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing thanks to their ability to eliminate downtime costs and batch‐to‐batch variation. Using in‐line video can monitor the current process status and improve the stability of the slug flow. However, there are no effective image processing methods aiming at such videos from chemical experiments due to limited training sample size and the variety of experimental settings. The paper proposes a training‐free method to automatically detect and measure the slugs from in‐line videos. Multiple image features are fused to identify the slug shapes under various lighting conditions, a six‐point model is fitted to achieve better volume estimation, and a consistency score is estimated to quantify the detection uncertainty. The proposed algorithm achieves similar results to manual labeling for various types of slug flow processes, improving the accuracy of slug column estimation by a large margin compared to the existing automatic methods. Finally, using it to monitor the slug flow process's stability and the change of the slug volume in an injection point are demonstrated. This paper presents the methodology and theoretical foundation of topology optimization (TO) Results Spaceframe Interpreter, an automatic TO results interpreter that generates a closely associated space frame consisting of welded structural tubing or rectangular bars. TO is a computational technique that uses a finite element (FE) formulation to identify the most weight-efficient structure within a design domain. Density-based TO results in structures that take organic forms and is usually a tedious and cumbersome process to generate a computer-aided-design (CAD) model to manufacture through conventional techniques. The optimal topology frequently resembles a space frame, which is well-known as being a rigid, lightweight structure. The methodology of the TO results interpreter leverages several techniques from volumetric image processing and has four primary processes. First, the results are obtained from commercial FE/TO software and mapped into a cubic grid of voxels. Second, junction locations are extracted and member connectivity that represents a frame is identified. Third, a sizing optimization is incorporated to determine appropriate sectional dimensions of the circular or rectangular space frame members. Fourth, the optimized space frame geometry is imported into a CAD design tool to automatically create a design model. The logic and are implemented within the frame extraction processes. The automated TO interpreter is designed to interact with commercial FE analysis and CAD systems. The real-time tracking of moving objects has extensive applications in various domains. Existing tracking methods typically utilize video image processing, but their performance is limited due to the high information throughput and computational requirements associated with processing continuous images. Additionally, imaging in certain spectral bands can be costly. This paper proposes a non-imaging real-time three-dimensional tracking technique for distant moving targets using single-pixel LiDAR. This novel approach involves compressing scene information from three-dimensional to one-dimensional space using spatial encoding modulation and then obtaining this information through single-pixel detection. A LiDAR system is constructed based on this method, where the peak position of the detected full-path one-dimensional echo signal is used to obtain the target distance, while the peak intensity is used to obtain the azimuth and pitch information of the moving target. The entire process requires minimal data collection and a low computational load, making it feasible for the real-time three-dimensional tracking of single or multiple moving targets. Outdoor experiments confirmed the efficacy of the proposed technology, achieving a distance accuracy of 0.45 m and an azimuth and pitch angle accuracy of approximately 0.03° in localizing and tracking a flying target at a distance of 3 km. Segmenting small infrared targets presents a significant challenge for traditional image processing architectures due to the inherent lack of texture, minimal shape information, and their sparse pixel representation within images. The conventional UNet architecture, while proficient in general segmentation tasks, inadequately addresses the nuances of small infrared target segmentation due to its reliance on downsampling operations, such as pooling, which often results in the loss of critical target information. This paper introduces the Channel Spatial Attention Nested UNet (CSAN-UNet), an innovative architecture designed specifically to enhance the detection and segmentation of small infrared targets. Central to CSAN-UNet's design is the Cascaded Channel and Spatial Convolutional Attention Module (CSCAM), a novel component that adaptively enhances multi-level features and mitigates the loss of target information attributable to downsampling processes. In this paper, we propose a novel method for 3D data cube denoising, where the 3D data cube is corrupted by noise with spatially varying noise levels. We perform 3D dual tree complex wavelet transform (DTCWT) to the 3D data cube, and then conduct wavelet-based thresholding based on three scales of dependency in wavelet coefficients. Instead of using the global noise level, we estimate the noise levels locally, which improve the denoising results substantially. We conduct inverse DTCWT to obtain the noise reduced data cubes. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms block matching and 3D filtering, video block matching and 3D filtering, 2D bivariate shrinkage, and 3D bivariate shrinkage significantly for noise reduction of 3D data cubes. Approximate multipliers are widely used in image processing and multimedia signal processing applications for the reduction in area, computation time, and power consumption. 4:2 compressors play a key role in multipliers for efficient addition of partial product bits. In this paper, an inexact 4:2 compressor is proposed, where a major portion of the logic associated with the generation of Carry and Sum are shared to reduce the logic/circuit complexity. During the design time overestimates are balanced with the underestimates so as to reduce the total error distance. The proposed compressor is used for the addition of partial products of the Baugh-Wooley multiplier. A novel algorithm is proposed for the placement of inexact 4:2 compressors in the partial product bit array, based on the minimum peak signal-to-noise ratio requirement of the application. The approximate multipliers thus obtained are used for edge detection using Sobel operator. It is observed from the Pareto analysis that the proposed design offers significant saving in area, computation time, and power consumption over the design with nearly the same error performance. Besides, the proposed design is more error tolerant compared with the design with nearly the same area-delay trade-off and power-delay trade-off. Moreover, the proposed inexact 4:2 compressor-based Baugh-Wooley multiplier is found to offer better accuracy-area trade-off compared to the state-of-the-art 4:2 compressors in convolutional neural network-based classification. Apple-picking robot can promote the development of smart agriculture, and accurate object recognition in complex natural environments using deep learning algorithms is critical. However, research has shown that changes in illumination and object occlusion remain significant challenges for recognition. In order to improve the accuracy of apple apple-picking robot’s identification and positioning of apples in natural environment, a method using YOLOv5 (You Only Look Once, YOLO) combined with fast-guided filter is proposed. By introducing a fast-guided filtering module, the ability to extract image features is improved, and the problem of inaccurate occlusion targets and edge detection is solved; K-means clustering algorithm is introduced in improving YOLOv5, which can realize automatic adjustment of image size and step size; BiFPN structure is introduced in Neck network to add weighted feature fusion to highlight the detailed features. The results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper can well remove noise information such as occlusion edge blurring in apple images in a natural light environment. In the real orchard environment, the apple recognition accuracy rate reached 97.8%, the recall rate was 97.3% and the recognition rate was about 26.84fps. The results show that this research based on YOLOv5 and fast-guided filtering can realize fast and accurate identification of apple fruits in natural environment, and meet the practical application requirements of real-time target detection. Rock strength parameters such as uniaxial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity are crucial parameters in designing rock engineering structures. Owing to the importance of the aforementioned parameters, in this paper, image processing technique is coupled with artificial neural network (ANN) method for assessing the uniaxial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of sandstones. For this reason, 102 core sandstone samples were prepared. Subsequently petrographic analyses and imaging operation for 102 images were performed. Principal component analysis was then conducted for feature reduction purposes. At last, an ANN model, which received its input data from image processing technique, was constructed for assessing the UCS and E of sandstone samples. Overall, the best performance of the network was obtained when 10 hidden nodes were used. Conventional image processing and machine learning based on handcrafted features struggle to meet the real time and high-accuracy requirements for industrial defect detection in complex, sensitive, and dynamic environments. To address this issue, this paper proposes AENet, a novel real-time defect detection network based on an encoder-decoder model, which achieves high detection accuracy and efficiency while demonstrating excellent convergence and generalization. Firstly, a spatial channel attention module in the encoding network is designed to exploit both spatial attention and channel attention using a multi-head 3D self-attention mechanism. This improves parallelism and detection efficiency. Secondly, the decoding network of AENet incorporates the cross-level attention fusion module, which fuses input features from different layers. Combined with multi-level upsampling design, the decoder enhances the representation of defect details. Furthermore, we insert a simplified aggregator into the encoder-decoder network to extract feature information at different scales with low computational cost. This aggregation process aids in training and inference on industrial defect datasets by incorporating contextual information. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that AENet outperforms other segmentation models in accomplishing defect recognition and segmentation in challenging optical environments. It exhibits a faster convergence than other networks and a balance between accuracy and speed. This paper introduces a novel thresholding and morphology-based skull stripping method for different MRI modalities. The proposed method is designed in a way which is easy to use and generates satisfactory results with minimal parameter adjustments. The method is evaluated on three different benchmark datasets and compared with nine state-of-the-art skull stripping methods. The experimental results suggest that the proposed method generates comparable results to some of the best methods in literature. However, unlike many other methods, it works well on different types of MRI scans. Perception systems in autonomous vehicles need to accurately detect and classify objects within their surrounding environments. Numerous types of sensors are deployed on these vehicles, and the combination of such multimodal data streams can significantly boost performance. The authors introduce a novel sensor fusion framework using deep convolutional neural networks. The framework employs both camera and LiDAR sensors in a multimodal, multiview configuration. With the increasing popularity of machine learning (ML) in image processing, privacy concerns have emerged as a significant issue in deploying and using ML services. However, current privacy protection approaches often require computationally expensive training from scratch or extensive fine-tuning of models, posing significant barriers to the development of privacy-conscious models, particularly for smaller organizations seeking to comply with data privacy laws. In this paper, we address the privacy challenges in computer vision by investigating the effectiveness of two recent fine-tuning methods, Model Reprogramming and Low-Rank Adaptation. We adapt these techniques to provide attribute protection for pre-trained models, minimizing computational overhead and training time. Specifically, we modify the models to produce privacy-preserving latent representations of images that cannot be used to identify unintended attributes. We integrate these methods into an adversarial min–max framework, allowing us to conceal sensitive information from feature outputs without extensive modifications to the pre-trained model, but rather focusing on a small set of new parameters. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods by conducting experiments on the CelebA dataset, achieving state-of-the-art performance while significantly reducing computational complexity and cost. This paper proposes a new method for recognizing, extracting, and processing Phase-Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) patterns from two-dimensional plots to identify specific defect types affecting electrical equipment without human intervention while retaining the principals that make PRPD analysis an effective diagnostic technique. The proposed method does not rely on training complex deep learning algorithms which demand substantial computational resources and extensive datasets that can pose significant hurdles for the application of on-line partial discharge monitoring. Instead, the developed Cosine Cluster Net (CCNet) model, which is an image processing pipeline, can extract and process patterns from any two-dimensional PRPD plot before employing the cosine similarity function to measure the likeness of the patterns to predefined templates of known defect types. The PRPD pattern recognition capabilities of the model were tested using several manually classified PRPD images available in the existing literature. The model consistently produced similarity scores that identified the same defect type as the one from the manual classification. Conventional photography can only provide a two-dimensional image of the scene, whereas emerging imaging modalities such as light field enable the representation of higher dimensional visual information by capturing light rays from different directions. Light fields provide immersive experiences, a sense of presence in the scene, and can enhance different vision tasks. Hence, research into light field processing methods has become increasingly popular. It does, however, come at the cost of higher data volume and computational complexity. With the growing deployment of machine-learning and deep architectures in image processing applications, a paradigm shift toward learning-based approaches has also been observed in the design of light field processing methods. Various learning-based approaches are developed to process the high volume of light field data efficiently for different vision tasks while improving performance. Taking into account the diversity of light field vision tasks and the deployed learning-based frameworks, it is necessary to survey the scattered learning-based works in the domain to gain insight into the current trends and challenges. Introduction: In recent decades, numerous large survey projects have been initiated to enhance our understanding of the cosmos. Among these, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) stands out as a flagship project of the Stage IV cosmology imaging surveys, offering an open-source framework for data management and processing adaptable to various instruments. Methods: In this paper, we introduce the 'obs_mccd' software package, designed to serve as a bridge linking raw data from generic mosaic-CCD instruments to the LSST data management framework. The package also facilitates the deployment of tailored configurations to the pipeline middleware. To validate our data processing pipeline, we processed a batch of realistic data from a commissioning wide-field telescope. Results: We established a prototype of the quality control (QC) system capable of assessing image quality parameters such as PSF size, ellipticity, and astrometric calibration. Our findings indicate that using a fifth-order polynomial for astrometric calibration effectively characterizes geometric distortion, achieving a median average geometric distortion residual of 0.011 pixel. Discussion: When comparing the performance of our pipeline to our inhouse pipeline applied to the same dataset, we observed that our new 'obs_mccd' pipeline offers improved precision, reducing the median average geometric distortion residual from 0.016 pixel to 0.011 pixel. This enhancement in performance underscores the benefits of the obs_mccd package in managing and processing data from wide-field surveys, and it opens up new avenues for scientific exploration with smaller, flexible survey systems complementing the LSST. Heterogeneity observed at the asphalt mixture scale is analyzed in this paper. Reliable finite element analysis (FEA) of asphalt concrete comprises a set of complex issues. The two main aspects of the asphalt concrete FEA discussed in this study are: (1) digital reconstruction of the asphalt pavement microstructure using processing of the high-quality images; and (2) FEA of the asphalt concrete idealized samples accounting for the viscoelastic material model. Reconstruction of the asphalt concrete microstructure is performed using a sequence of image processing operations (binarization, removing holes, filtering, segmentation and boundaries detection). Geometry of the inclusions (aggregate) are additionally simplified in a controlled mode to reduce the numerical cost of the analysis. As is demonstrated in the study, the introduced geometry simplifications are justified. Computational cost reduction exceeds of several orders of magnitude additional modeling error occurring due to the applied simplification technique. Viscoelastic finite element analysis of the AC identified microstructure is performed using the Burgers material model. The analysis algorithm is briefly described with a particular focus on the computational efficiency aspects. In order to illustrate the proposed approach, a set of 2D problems is solved. Numerical results confirm both the effectiveness of the self-developed code and the applicability of the Burgers model to the analyzed class of AC analysis problems. While binder jetting (BJ) additive manufacturing (AM) holds considerable promise for industrial applications, defects often compromise part quality. This study addresses these challenges by investigating binding mechanisms and analyzing common defects, proposing tailored solutions to mitigate them. Emphasizing defect identification for effective quality control in BJ-AM, this research offers strategies for in-process rectification and post-process evaluation to elevate part quality. It shows how to successfully process metallic parts with complex geometries while maintaining consistent material properties. Furthermore, the paper explores the microstructure of AISI M2 tool steel, utilizing advanced image processing techniques like digital image analysis and SEM images to evaluate carbide distribution. The results show that M2 tool steel has a high proportion of M6C carbides, with furnace-cooled samples ranging from ~2.4% to 7.1% and MC carbides from ~0.4% to 9.4%. M6C carbides ranged from ~2.6% to 3.8% in air-cooled samples, while water-cooled samples peaked at ~8.52%. Sintering conditions also affected shrinkage, with furnace-cooled samples showing the lowest rates (1.7 ± 0.4% to 5 ± 0.4%) and water-cooled samples showing the highest (2 ± 0.4% to 14.1 ± 0.4%). The study recommends real-time defect detection systems with autonomous corrective capabilities to improve the quality and performance of BJ-AM components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adaptive optics (AO) systems correct optical phase aberrations of the incoming light generated by the atmosphere. To do so simultaneous estimators of the atmospheric turbulence parameters are required. For the family of wide-field AO (WFAO) systems, this information must be stratified in altitude. Among these vectorized estimations, wind profiling in altitude is needed for the reduction of temporal errors in AO loops or for the estimation of turbulence coherence time. This paper proposes a turbulence wind profiler called image processing based peak tracking algorithm (ipta). ipta is an image-processing based approach that automatically and reliably estimates wind velocity for several turbulent layers along the line of sight. The estimation of each wind layer is achieved by tracking peaks produced in cross-correlation maps from pairs of wavefront sensors (WFSs) slopes using the technique known as SLODAR (slope detection and ranging). Results for simulated and on-sky WFS data sets demonstrate that ipta outperforms one of the state of the art wind profiler methods [the profiler covariance parametrization of wind velocity (CAW)] in terms of accuracy and speed. Results also show that, in terms of execution time, our method scales better when the number of WFS lenslets is increased.
