In this study, the space charge in oil-impregnated thick pressboard and Kraft paper were measured by the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method from -20 to +60 °C. A bipolar charge transport model was used to simulate the transport processes of homocharge and heterocharge, and the acoustic attenuation process in the samples. The test results show that space charge accumulates in the thick pressboard and Kraft paper increases first and then decreases with temperature, and its maximum appears at 40°C, while little space charge accumulates at -20°C. The space charge near the lower electrode shrinks in the oil-impregnated thick pressboard at high temperature and the shrinkage is larger at 60°C. In the oil-impregnated Kraft paper, the accumulation and charge density of positive charge is different from negative charge. The ion transport process model simulates the charge shrinkage near the electrode, and disappears at the upper electrode after the acoustic attenuation simulation. The model established in this paper can well simulate the space charge distribution of oil-impregnated thick pressboard and Kraft paper under different temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the application of the Cole-Cole model for determining the runs of the return voltage of the paper-oil insulation sample through a computer simulation. Different insulation conditions were simulated through an adequate selection of parameters a and T of the Cole-Cole model. For calculation purposes, a series - parallel substitute scheme, obtained through approximation of discrete characteristic operator impedance Za of the model applied, was used. In this paper the accelerated aging experiments of oil-paper insulation are carried out to simulate the oil-paper aging process under normal thermal aging process. On the basis of the results of accelerated aging experiments, how the deviation degree of aging status change under the same aging factors is studied, and a method to calculate the failure probability due to the loss of mechanical strength of the insulation is put forward. This paper presents an approach for economic assessment on insulation diagnosis through accelerated aging experiments. The foundation of this approach for economic assessment on insulation diagnosis is to establish condition simulation method of triple relationships between condition status, aging time and failure probability according to data from accelerated aging experiments. The conclusions are made that the economic and technical factors can affect the optimum life cycle cost of each maintenance strategy, which consequently affects the economic feasibility of condition-based maintenance strategies. The article reports on research into sketch-understanding systems for tablet personal computers (tablet PC). It discusses the work of the Sketch Understanding Group, of which the author is a member, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on developing a "magic paper," or "intelligent paper," a paper-like surface that can convert sketches of physical systems into animated computer graphics. Sketch-understanding systems go beyond traditional computer-aided design (CAD) programs that produce diagrams, and beyond handwriting recognition systems.

This paper proposes a new method to improve re performance of intra-field interpolation which is the mos~ important element of deinterlacing method. Traditional edge- based methods were poor at determining accurate edge iirection which decides interpolation performance. The 7roposed method decides the direction and slope of edge based on locally adaptive-thresholded binary image to mprove efficiency and accuracy, and it also increased the ~orizontal size of search window to 15 for better direction ietermination at gentle slope. Compared to traditional edge- based methods, interpolation based on binary image, which is ,`enerated using the proposed method, leads to great erformance improvement. Transfer learning enables to re-use knowledge learned on a source task to help learning a target task. A simple form of transfer learning is common in current state-of-the-art computer vision models, i.e., pre-training a model for image classification on the ILSVRC dataset, and then fine-tune on any target task. However, previous systematic studies of transfer learning have been limited and the circumstances in which it is expected to work are not fully understood. In this paper we carry out an extensive experimental exploration of transfer learning across vastly different image domains (consumer photos, autonomous driving, aerial imagery, underwater, indoor scenes, synthetic, close-ups) and task types (semantic segmentation, object detection, depth estimation, keypoint detection). Importantly, these are all complex, structured output tasks types relevant to modern computer vision applications. In total we carry out over 2000 transfer learning experiments, including many where the source and target come from different image domains, task types, or both. We systematically analyze these experiments to understand the impact of image domain, task type, and dataset size on transfer learning performance. Orthogonal/vector approximate message-passing (AMP) is a powerful message-passing (MP) algorithm for signal reconstruction in compressed sensing. This paper proves the convergence of Bayes-optimal orthogonal/vector AMP in the large system limit. The proof strategy is based on a novel long-memory (LM) MP approach: A first step is a construction of LM-MP that is guaranteed to converge systematically. A second step is a large-system analysis of LM-MP via an existing framework of state evolution. A third step is to prove the convergence of state evolution recursions for Bayes-optimal LM-MP via a new statistical interpretation of existing LM damping. The last is an exact reduction of the state evolution recursions for Bayes-optimal LM-MP to those for Bayes-optimal orthogonal/vector AMP. The convergence of the state evolution recursions for Bayes-optimal LM-MP implies that for Bayes-optimal orthogonal/vector AMP. Numerical simulations are presented to show the verification of state evolution results for damped orthogonal/vector AMP and a negative aspect of LM-MP in finite-sized systems. The risk of unstable subsynchronous oscillations (SSO) in DFIG-based wind parks radially connected to transmission lines with series capacitive compensation is typically assessed with numerous electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, which is a time-consuming process. However, not all operating scenarios present risk of SSO and require such a detailed investigation. This paper proposes two charts based on impedance equivalents of wind generators obtained through frequency scans to quickly map which combinations of parameters can create unstable SSOs and which combinations are risk-free. With the information, engineers can immediately filter out scenarios with no risk of instability and conduct detailed studies on fewer scenarios that are truly critical. These charts can be obtained with simple equations that use only information readily available in practice to engineers, without the need to run any computer simulation. The charts also reveal the key operating conditions that can increase the risk of an unstable SSO and provide real-time quantitative insights into how close a wind park is to an instability. In conventional molecular communication (MC) systems, the signaling molecules used for information transmission are stored, released, and then replenished by a transmitter (TX). However, the replenishment of signaling molecules at the TX is challenging in practice. Furthermore, in most envisioned MC applications, e.g., in the medical field, it is not desirable to insert the TX into the MC system, as this might impair natural biological processes. In this paper, we propose the concept of media modulation based MC where the TX is placed outside the channel and utilizes signaling molecules already present inside the system. The signaling molecules can assume different states which can be switched by external stimuli. Hence, in media modulation based MC, the TX modulates information into the state of the signaling molecules. In particular, we exploit the group of photochromic molecules, which undergo light-induced reversible state transitions, for media modulation. We study the usage of these molecules for information transmission in a three-dimensional duct system, which contains an eraser, a TX, and a receiver for erasing, writing, and reading of information via external light, respectively. We develop a statistical model for the received signal which accounts for the distribution of the signaling molecules in the system, the initial states of the signaling molecules, the reliability of the state control mechanism, the randomness of irrepressible, spontaneous state switching, and the randomness of molecule propagation. We adopt a maximum likelihood detector and show that it can be reduced to a threshold based detector. Furthermore, we derive analytical expressions for the optimal threshold value and the resulting bit error rate (BER), respectively. Both the statistical model and BER results are verified by computer simulations. In sparse linear regression, the SLOPE estimator generalizes LASSO by penalizing different coordinates of the estimate according to their magnitudes. In this paper, we present a precise performance characterization of SLOPE under the i.i.d. Gaussian design. We focus on the asymptotic regime where the number of unknown parameters grows in proportion to the number of observations. Our asymptotic characterization enables us to derive the fundamental limits of SLOPE in both estimation and variable selection settings. We also provide a computationally feasible way to optimally design the regularizing sequences to reach the aforementioned fundamental limits. In both settings, we show that the optimal design problem can be formulated as certain infinite-dimensional convex optimization problems that have efficient and accurate finite-dimensional approximations. Numerical simulations verify all our asymptotic predictions. They demonstrate the superiority of our optimal regularizing sequences over other designs used in the existing literature. Responsive and highly controlled autonomous vehicles (AVs) on the road easily form platoons with small inter-vehicle gaps to increase traffic throughput and reduce energy consumption. Unlike human drivers, AVs typically employ discrete quantization signals and only generate finite discrete acceleration. Finite discrete acceleration easily causes unstable inter-vehicle gaps and inter-vehicle collisions, especially when there are inaccurate quantization parameters due to quantizer aging. Based on the backstepping technique, this paper proposes the cooperative constrained control algorithm under unknown quantization parameters for AVs with nonuniform input quantization and motion uncertainties. The control laws of each AV in the platoon only depend on the state information of its consecutive AVs. The position trajectories of consecutive AVs are constructed as inter-vehicle collision-free constraints to avoid emergency braking and inter-vehicle collisions. In addition, the consistent characteristic of two types of nonuniform quantizers (i.e., logarithmic quantizers and hysteresis quantizers) is proposed, and unknown disturbances in vehicle motion are compensated. The Lyapunov based local stability and string stability are proved. Numerical simulation shows that the control algorithm is applicable to AVs with either logarithmic quantizers or hysteresis quantizers. Compared with the previous control algorithms without considering input quantization and inter-vehicle collision avoidance, the control algorithm proposed reduces inter-vehicle spacing errors, avoids high acceleration, and avoids inter-vehicle collisions. This paper considers the co-design technique of quantization and event-driven control for reducing the negative influences of network on the system performance of networked control systems (NCSs). Event-driven strategy aims at reducing the frequency of transmission, while signal quantization reduces the amounts of data for each transmission. By combining these two techniques, this paper establishes the quantized event-driven control approaches for both the fixed and relative event threshold cases. The system stability and the existence of the minimum interevent interval (MIEI) are analyzed. Finally, the validity of the proposed approaches is illustrated by the numerical simulations. In this paper, a self-adaptive protection system is proposed for adjusting the time dial (TD) of reclosers found in electrical power distribution systems (EPDSs). The self-adjustment is carried out in both phase and ground protection. The methodology considers the fuses along the feeder to obtain the fuse-saving philosophy. This feature allows less interference on the protection system already implemented by the electrical power distribution utilities. This methodology also allows using other frameworks, such as the estimation of the fault distance. The software used for computer modeling and simulation was PSCAD™/EMTDC™. The flexibility provided by the method, which allows the incorporation of new logic and changes in decision-making, resulted in an adaptive method with a good performance against different locations, types, and fault impedance. It also resulted in better coordination between the protection devices (PDs). The tip size of metal protrusions is an important factor affecting corona discharge, since it influences the electric filed, the ionization range and strength around the protrusion defect. Most existing studies on the influence of protrusion tip size on corona discharge are implemented by experimental methods. However, these studies are difficult to obtain the microphysical process of charged particles, which is related to the generation of current pulses and electromagnetic (EM) waves. In this paper, a hydrodynamic simulation model is proposed to study the effect of protrusion tip size on the microphysical process and current pulses of negative corona discharge. A mapping relationship between microscopic behaviors of charged particles and current pulses is established by this simulation method. Based on the comparison of microphysical quantities, the effect of defect tip size on the detailed parameters of current pulses is clearly explained. It shows that with the increase of tip size under a constant voltage, all the five parameters of current pluses increase. The rising time is related to the effective ionization coefficient, while the falling time is dependent on the velocities of positive and negative ions. The dynamic interaction of vehicles/bridges is an important part of the research field of the Electromagnet Suspension (EMS) maglev train. However, multiple factors affect the dynamics of the coupling system, which increases the complexity of the vehicle-bridge coupling system, and makes it difficult to analyze. Herein, combining the advantages of theoretical derivation and numerical calculation, a fast and accurate analysis method of maglev vehicle and bridge system is proposed to analyze the influence of bridge and controller on the dynamics of the maglev system. This work is directed to the Changsha maglev express line, in which the mathematical equations for the vehicle- bridge system is presented. Then the influence of the parameter on the system is analyzed. Finally, the vibration experimental test system is set up, and the vibration test of the maglev vehicle bridge is tested by the test scheme, and the experimental results data are given. The test results of vibration acceleration are in good agreement with the calculation results of the proposed method, which verifies the accuracy of the model and the analysis method. Therefore, the research in this paper can provide theoretical guidance for Maglev engineering, and the analysis method in this paper can also be used in the study of other vehicles, such as the high-speed maglev train. The paper presents the results of experimental registrations and numerical simulations of the transient overvoltages caused by single phase intermittent arc earth fault in 35 kV network with isolated neutral. Experimental laboratory investigation is performed in order to implement appropriate arc fault model for arcs with low and discontinuous current. Single phase to earth arc fault is created in field in 35 kV network. Numerical model of the system is created in EMTP-ATP software. Quantum LDPC codes are a promising direction for low overhead quantum computing. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the Union-Find decoder as a decoder for quantum LDPC codes. We prove that this decoder corrects all errors with weight up to $An^\alpha $ for some $A, \alpha > 0$ , where $n$ is the code length, for different classes of quantum LDPC codes such as toric codes and hyperbolic codes in any dimension $D \geq 3$ and quantum expander codes. To prove this result, we introduce a notion of covering radius which measures the spread of an error from its syndrome. We believe this notion could find application beyond the decoding problem. We also perform numerical simulations, which show that our Union-Find decoder outperforms the belief propagation decoder in the low error rate regime in the case of a quantum LDPC code with length 3600. For the recently developed quasi-reversible BCH codes with long lengths and high error-correcting capability, this paper is aimed at proposing a new and faster decoding procedure. It consists of four steps: 1) compute the consecutive syndromes; 2) calculate the syndrome functions by the forward and backward recursions; 3) solve a linear subsystem together with one matrix multiplication in order to find an error-locator polynomial; 4) determine the errors from the obtained polynomial by using the root-finding algorithm. This procedure, especially in Steps 2 and 3, differs greatly from the conventional procedures, which determine an error-locator polynomial directly from solving a linear system with the aid of the consecutive syndromes. The key idea behind this decoding technique is that the computational complexity of such a small subsystem instead of an originally large linear system can be significantly reduced, although there are additional forward and backward syndrome calculations with low complexity increasing. Finally, the illustrative examples and numerical simulations can be helpful to demonstrate the accuracy and efficacy of the presented decoding technique at different error-correcting capabilities. In this paper, we investigate a hybrid multicast/unicast scheme for a multiple-input single-output cache-aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) vehicular scenario in the face of rapidly fluctuating vehicular wireless channels. Considering a more practical situation, imperfect channel state information is taking into account. In this paper, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the unicast sum rate under the constraints of the peak power, the peak backhaul, the minimum unicast rate, and the maximum multicast outage probability. To solve the formulated non-convex problem, a lower bound relaxation method is proposed, which enables a division of the original problem into two convex sub-problems. The ITER magnet system will operate in extremely severe conditions, which impose high requirements for mechanical and dielectric strength of the electrical insulation of the superconductive coils. Only monolithic structure obtained during the VPI procedure is capable to provide the required mechanical and dielectric strength for electrical insulation. To provide the qualitative insulation, a temperature non-uniformity of the electrical insulation should be kept within the range of [−5, +5 °C] and [−0, +20 °C] during filling with epoxy compound and its curing, respectively. The PF1 coil is about 150 t in weight and consists of materials with different thermal conductivity. Besides, a complicated geometry of the coil adds complexity to VPI. Since the VPI is usually a long-term and irreversible process (within pot life of compound), the whole process should be controllable. The paper describes the developed calculation model of the ITER PF1 coil and presents the results of numerical simulation of this model at VPI of electrical insulation. The completed VPI of the ITER PF1 coil has verified the proposed method for coil heating and proved an acceptable agreement between the calculated and measured temperature distributions throughout the VPI procedure. Coded computation techniques provide robustness against straggling workers in distributed computing. However, most of the existing schemes require exact provisioning of the straggling behavior and ignore the computations carried out by straggling workers. Moreover, these schemes are typically designed to recover the desired computation results accurately, while in many machine learning and iterative optimization algorithms, faster approximate solutions are known to result in an improvement in the overall convergence time. In this paper, we first introduce a novel coded matrix-vector multiplication scheme, called coded computation with partial recovery (CCPR), which benefits from the advantages of both coded and uncoded computation schemes, and reduces both the computation time and the decoding complexity by allowing a trade-off between the accuracy and the speed of computation. We then extend this approach to distributed implementation of more general computation tasks by proposing a coded communication scheme with partial recovery, where the results of subtasks computed by the workers are coded before being communicated. The posterior Cramr-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) and a number of its extensions including the unconditional PCRLB (U-PCRLB) and the conditional PCRLB (C-PCRLB) have been widely studied in multi-sensor target tracking (MSTT). Previous MSTT works assume that the measurements are conditionally independent, which is often not the case in practice. When the correlations of the measurements are unknown, the standard Bayes update and PCRLB computations cannot be performed. Inspired by geometric average (GA) fusion that implements data fusion with unknown data correlations by employing exponential mixture density (EMD) to compute the global posterior, EMD-based approximations to U-PCRLB and C-PCRLB are derived in this paper for two classic distributed fusion architectures, namely the hierarchical and consensus architectures. The PCRLB can be decomposed into two parts, one coming from the prior information and the other from the information contained in the data. The data information part of PCRLB is approximated via EMD-based posterior, leading to the approximation of the PCRLB. We present a sequential Monte Carlo solution to recursively compute the proposed approximation to the PCRLB for nonlinear non-Gaussian estimation problems. Numerical simulations are provided to show that the proposed approximation to the bound on the estimation mean square error (MSE) is tighter compared to the existing bounds based on likelihood fusion obtained under the measurement independence assumption. This paper proposes a cyber-physical framework consisting of the secure and privacy-preserving distributed impulsive-based estimator (DIE) algorithm and the local nonlinear control (LNC) algorithm to solve the cooperative formation tracking problem of networked marine surface vehicles (NMSVs) with sampled-data interactions and external disturbances. In the cyber layer, a secure and privacy-preserving information exchange scheme is proposed based on the Paillier cryptosystem such that the states of the virtual leader can be estimated in a secure and privacy-preserving way. In the physical layer, the LNC algorithm is designed with the utilization of the estimators in the cyber layer to achieve the formation tracking for the NMSVs with disturbance rejection ability. Sufficient conditions for guaranteeing the convergence and the stability of the closed-loop system are derived based on systematic analysis. In this paper, we study the underlay relay-aided Device-to-Device (D2D) communications to improve the physical layer (PHY) security of the cellular network. We propose a cooperative scheme, whereby the D2D pair, in return of being allowed to share the spectrum band of the cellular network, serves as a friendly jammer, through its multiple-input multiple-output relay, to degrade the wiretapped signal at an eavesdropper. This paper aims to show that spectrum sharing is advantageous for both D2D communications and cellular networks with respect to reliability and robustness for the former, and the physical layer security enhancement for the latter. To assess the proposed cooperative system model, closed-form expressions for the D2D outage probability, the secrecy outage probability, and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity are derived. The C-RAN architecture has been prevailing in mobile networks for 5G and beyond. Along with the significant increase in the amount of mobile data, network operators must consider the spatio-temporal pattern of traffi c demand due to human mobility and lifestyles. It has been an important problem to efficiently deploy mobile networks avoiding the underutilization of cell capacities in off -peak times. To address this problem, in this paper we propose a concept of an adaptive C-RAN architecture toward the beyond 5G era. The proposed architecture enables flexible reconfi guration of the radio unit (RU) states and movable DU locations considering the changes in demand distribution. The DUs and RUs compose wireless relay fronthaul networks to forward fronthaul streams satisfying the strict latency requirements. This paper also proposes the joint scheduling algorithm to activate RUs, relocate DUs, and determine forwarding paths of fronthaul streams. It was confi rmed with computer simulations that mobile networks can be efficiently reconstructed with the proposed idea by activating/deactivating RUs and relocating/ migrating DUs. In the system and control community, the sliding mode control technology has been known as a tool which is able to handle system uncertainties and external disturbances. Simplicity in implementation and good stability performance are the other interesting features of the sliding modes. However, traditional sliding mode controllers exhibit two weaknesses, as follows: 1) generally, they have asymptotic stability in sliding mode dynamics which results in a slow speed system and 2) the so-called chattering phenomenon exists, which produces undesirable high frequency oscillations in the control signal. In this paper, the former problem is solved using a twofold terminal sliding manifold displaying desired transient and steady state behavior. The latter issue is responded to by a twofold sliding mode technology which leads to a continuous sliding control rule instead of a discontinuous switching control. The effects of uncertain terms as well as external perturbations with unknown bounds are fully compensated using updated parameters. The values of the updated parameters approach fixed values as the system trajectories converge to the equilibrium states. The analytical results of this paper are theoretically proved using the Lyapunov technique and the finite-time control strategy. Comparative computer simulations on a robotic manipulator confirm the fast convergence attribute and robust performance of the introduced adaptive robust nonsingular terminal sliding control algorithm. Mass imbalance frequently exists in a rotating machine. It may induce unbalance force, causing undesirable vibrations and noise. Active magnetic bearing (AMB) has been found to be a good device to deal with such problem. This paper is concerned with the unbalance compensation for a three-pole AMB system. An adaptive compensation scheme is proposed based on the theory of immersion and invariance (I&I) control. It is to immerse a higher-order system into a lower-order target system. The lower-order target system in this paper is the three-pole AMB system with known mass imbalance and with a stabilizing integral sliding mode controller (ISMC). On the other hand, the higher-order system is the three-pole AMB system with both the ISMC levitation controller and the adaptive compensator. The adaptive compensator is designed to deal with the case that the mass imbalance may be unknown and may be changing during operation in practical applications. It estimates the information of mass imbalance online and is incorporated into the ISMC so that the unbalance force can be eliminated. The flexibility in transmission networks is not fully utilized in existing energy management systems (EMSs). Corrective transmission switching (CTS) is proposed in this two-part paper to enable EMS to take advantage of the flexibility in transmission systems in a practical way. This paper proposes the following two EMS procedures: first, Procedure-A connects real-time security-constrained economic dispatch (RT SCED) with real-time contingency analysis (RTCA), which is consistent with industrial practice; and second, Procedure-B, an enhanced version of Procedure-A, includes CTS in EMS with the proposed concept of branch pseudo limit used in RT SCED. Part-I of this paper presents the methodology, whereas Part-II includes detailed results analysis. It is demonstrated that Procedure-A can effectively eliminate the base case overloads and the potential post-contingency overloads identified by RTCA, and Procedure-B can achieve significant congestion cost reduction with consideration of CTS in RT SCED. The reduction in bus voltage magnitudes as the load demand grows may lead to sudden disconnection of loads and/or distributed generation units, in distribution grids, caused by undervoltage protection schemes. As proposed in this paper, this discontinuous behavior of distribution grids can be modeled as a sudden load variation in traditional static voltage stability assessment methods, such as the continuation power flow (CPFLOW). A discussion on the impacts of these discontinuities on the equilibrium diagram of the system is presented in this paper, as well as a set of numerical simulations showing that the traditional CPFLOW algorithm presents convergence problems caused by the discontinuities under analysis. From this perspective, this paper proposes an algorithm based on novel predictor/corrector and identification schemes, which are capable of successively calculating the discontinuities that exist in the equilibrium loci of the system under analysis, as well as the maximum loadability point and the type of bifurcation. A simplified modeling approach that eliminates the need for a complex (and computationally expensive), detailed description of distribution grids is also elaborated and incorporated into the proposed algorithm. This paper presents a simulation study of the dynamics of dust grains around a small asteroid. Plasma-asteroid interactions and asteroid charging are obtained from fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. Dust transport simulation takes into account the electrostatic force, solar radiation pressure, and the gravitational force. Both the result derived from laboratory measurements of regolith surface charging and the single dust charging model are considered for dust charging. For the small asteroid considered in this paper, we find that dust transport is mostly determined by the competition between the electrostatic force and the solar pressure and dust distribution is sensitive to both dust charging and dust grain size. For dust grains in the tens of micrometer size range, the solar radiation pressure dominates dust transport at small dust charge-to-mass ratio, whereas the electrostatic force dictates dust transport at large dust charge-to-mass ratio. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. In this paper, a novel space-time non-stationary three-dimensional (3D) wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model is proposed. We then propose a ray-level process to model the spatial-temporal evolution of individual multipath components (MPCs), including near-field effects and (dis)appearance, and cluster-level large-scale fading. The proposed evolution process can flexibly control rays’ lifespans and smoothness of (dis)appearance in both space and time domains. In addition, we propose an improved Rayleigh-distance criterion to determine the most adequate wavefront for each cluster and ray. Existing models can easily implement the proposed criterion and make a more efficient use of computation resources. Also, a Gamma-Poisson mixture distribution is introduced to model the distribution of the number of clusters when multiple locations of the mobile station are considered. Key statistical properties of the channel, including the autocorrelation function (ACF), Doppler power spectral density (PSD), spatial cross-correlation function (S-CCF), and frequency correlation function (FCF), are derived and the impact of the ray-level evolution process on them is analyzed. This paper presents feasibility verification of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 MIMO system for 8K-UHD terrestrial broadcasting services. For a reliable performance evaluation, computer simulation, laboratory test, and field trial are conducted, and the tests’ results are compared with the same performance metrics. Several physical layer configurations with various data rates from 63 Mbps to 113 Mbps are verified. Semi-grant-free (SGF) transmission has recently received significant attention due to its capability to accommodate massive connectivity and reduce access delay by admitting grant-free users to channels which would otherwise be solely occupied by grant-based users. In this paper, a new SGF transmission scheme that exploits the flexibility in choosing the decoding order in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed. Compared to existing SGF schemes, this new scheme can ensure that admitting the grant-free users is completely transparent to the grant-based users, i.e., the grant-based users’ quality-of-service experience is guaranteed to be the same as for orthogonal multiple access. In addition, compared to existing SGF schemes, the proposed SGF scheme can significantly improve the robustness of the grant-free users’ transmissions and effectively avoid outage probability error floors. To facilitate the performance evaluation of the proposed SGF transmission scheme, an exact expression for the outage probability is obtained and an asymptotic analysis is conducted to show that the achievable multi-user diversity gain is proportional to the number of participating grant-free users. In the power control process of the range extender, both the engine and the generator are at risk of reaching the torque output limit. The limitation not only comes from the restriction of their own torque output capacity, but also comes from the additional constraints that are established to avoid power reverse undershoot. In order to improve the system performance under time-varying torque constraints, a real-time model predictive controller (MPC) that manipulates the torque commands of the engine and the generator to track the reference power is designed. Different from the traditional penalty function method, the quadratic function is taken as the penalty function in this paper, which greatly improves the efficiency of solving the optimal solution. Meanwhile, the steady-state torque command in the feasible region is taken as the extreme point of the quadratic penalty function, which avoids the penalty coefficient tending to infinity. By adjusting the penalty coefficients of different constraints, the overall optimal solution approaches the boundary of the active inequality constraints. And according to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) condition, it is proved that the optimal solution of the original problem can be obtained through iteration. With the prevalence of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in many standards, e.g., IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16, DVB-T, and DVB-T2, a number of variant modulation schemes based on OFDM have been proposed, which resort to signal sparsity to further enhance spectral efficiency and mitigate the high peak-to-average ratio (PAPR) problem. Among these variants, OFDM with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) has been proven to be efficient for simple communication systems with low constellation modulation orders and limited decoding capability. To rigorously verify the performance advantages of OFDM-SNM, we present the study of OFDM-SNM in this paper from the information-theoretic perspective. In particular, we determine an upper bound on the mutual information of OFDM-SNM in closed form by using the log sum inequality. Also, we analyze the optimal pattern utilization probabilities (PUPs) for OFDM-SNM by channel-dependent coding and propose an easy-to-implement iterative algorithm to approach the optimal PUPs. Moreover, considering the practical achievability, we propose a Huffman coding based achievable PUP vector construction scheme to obtain the achievable PUPs and the corresponding achievable rate. We carry out numerical simulations to verify the effectiveness of this study and illustrate the efficiency of the obtained PUPs in comparison with several benchmarks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superfluid helium has been used for cooling superconducting magnets in nuclear fusion and high energy physics. This paper presents a simplified final stage process of 1.8 K superfluid helium cryogenic system and its key component sub-atmospheric heat exchanger. Influence of variable thermal parameters of sub-atmospheric heat exchanger on the system performance is studied. The application of sub-atmospheric heat exchanger can increase refrigerating capacity by 61.34% under given conditions. The helically finned-tube heat exchanger (HFHE) is selected, and three-dimensional steady-state numerical simulations of flow and heat transfer performance have been carried out. Nu and f of tube side are 4.5-6 times higher and 95-97% lower than those of shell side, respectively. It is found that HFHE with low fin height and HFHE with filler (nylon rope) have better comprehensive heat transfer and flow performance, and PEC can reach 1.65 and 1.41 respectively under given conditions.
