Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is a relatively novel algorithm in the field of meta-heuristic algorithms. WOA can reveal an efficient performance compared with other well-established optimization algorithms, but there is still a problem of premature convergence and easy to fall into local optimal in complex multimodal functions, so this paper presents an improved WOA, and proposes the random hopping update strategy and random control parameter strategy to improve the exploration and exploitation ability of WOA. In this paper, 24 well-known benchmark functions are used to test the algorithm, including 10 unimodal functions and 14 multimodal functions. The experimental results show that the convergence accuracy of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the original algorithm on 21 functions, and better than that of the other 5 algorithms on 23 functions. Purpose: This paper aims to present a new multi-community meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, which is called shuffled shepherd optimization algorithm (SSOA). In this algorithm. Design/methodology/approach: The agents are first separated into multi-communities and the optimization process is then performed mimicking the behavior of a shepherd in nature operating on each community. Artificial neural network (ANN) is modeled to predict and classify problems. However, in the training phase of ANNs discovering faultless values of the weights of a network is extremely troublesome. Traditional weight updating methods often get stuck into local optima and converge to optimal solutions very slowly. Therefore, to overcome these drawbacks a modified version of a nature-based algorithm which merges meta-heuristics with weight-updating technique of ANN has been used in this paper. Whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is a well-established, efficient and competitive algorithm inspired by the hunting mechanism of the whales including their behavior in finding and attacking their prey with their bubble-net feeding technique. In WOA, the next location of the search individuals or whales is modified depending on some probability. Due to the high exploration rate of WOA, there is a disproportion between exploration and exploitation in the WOA and it also converges to the solution slowly. Thus, to establish an equilibrium between exploration and exploitation a new variant of WOA called modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA) is proposed to overcome the problem of delayed convergence. In MWOA, roulette wheel selection is combined with WOA to enhance the convergence speed of WOA. MWOA is tested on 11 benchmark functions, and the outcomes are compared with WOA. The results prove that MWOA has gained success in overcoming the problem of the slow convergence of WOA. Summary: In this paper, a new population‐based meta‐heuristic algorithm called Social Optimization Algorithm (SOA) is proposed. This algorithm has been inspired by the social behavior of human‐beings, and mimics an ideal justly‐established society where the two principles of justice, that is, equality of opportunity and community principles are meticulously followed. Reaching goals in such a society is optimally achieved. Although a real fully‐just society does not exist in the real world, we implement the principles in such ideal societies through simulations to introduce our new optimization algorithm. The advantage of the proposed method is that it does not have any algorithm‐specified parameters to be set. This is a great merit compared to similar meta‐heuristics. The algorithm has been simulated on 23 well‐known test functions, and the results have been compared with those produced by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and Differential Evolution (DE). In 57% of the 23 cases SOA yields superior results. The algorithm has also been tested on five other benchmark functions to be compared with Teaching‐Learning‐Based Optimization (TLBO) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC).The results provide evidence for efficient performance with superior solution quality of the proposed algorithm in solving benchmark problems. To further illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, it has been tested on the Economic Dispatch problem as a real‐world constrained optimization problem. The results have been compared with Biogeography‐Based Optimizer (BBO), Harmony Search (HS) and PSO. The Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is a new advanced algorithm that is based on the humpback whale chasing process. The main problem addressed by Whale Optimization Algorithm, similar to other metaheuristic algorithms, is premature convergence. This paper introduces the Sine Cosine Algorithm in the Whale Optimization Algorithm optimization process to enhance global convergence and to improve enactment. The proposed algorithm, called WOA-SCA, has local optima evasion of Whale Optimization Algorithm and high capability to increase the exploration. The implementation of the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm is investigated through a series of tests on common benchmark test functions, with the results compared to those of six alternative algorithms. The results of the investigations show that the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm works better in concert with the outputs of the benchmark functions. Also, to validate the proficiencies of the WOA-SCA, it has been used to resolve the real-world problem of Facial Emotion Recognition (FER). The field of facial emotion recognition is a fascinating new area of research that gives us the ability to identify the human face's expression in natural settings. A large part of the standard methodologies certainly does not indicate the looks because the attitudes depend on the human face sections' behaviors. The paper proposes the efficient Facial Emotion Recognition method using MultiSVNNN based on WOA-SCA (the proposed WOA-SCA based Multi-Support Vector Neural Network). Using the ADFES dataset for the disgust expression, our results demonstrate that the proposed work yields average emotion recognition accuracy of 98% associated to 80% and 96% based on BBPSO and MFOPSO, respectively. In this paper a novel nature-inspired optimization paradigm is proposed called Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm. The main inspiration of this optimizer is the navigation method of moths in nature called transverse orientation. Moths fly in night by maintaining a fixed angle with respect to the moon, a very effective mechanism for travelling in a straight line for long distances. However, these fancy insects are trapped in a useless/deadly spiral path around artificial lights. This paper mathematically models this behaviour to perform optimization. The MFO algorithm is compared with other well-known nature-inspired algorithms on 29 benchmark and 7 real engineering problems. The statistical results on the benchmark functions show that this algorithm is able to provide very promising and competitive results. Additionally, the results of the real problems demonstrate the merits of this algorithm in solving challenging problems with constrained and unknown search spaces. The paper also considers the application of the proposed algorithm in the field of marine propeller design to further investigate its effectiveness in practice.
