This paper proposes the Love Evolution Algorithm (LEA), a novel evolutionary algorithm inspired by the stimulus–value–role theory. The optimization process of the LEA includes three phases: stimulus, value, and role. Both partners evolve through these phases and benefit from them regardless of the outcome of the relationship. This inspiration is abstracted into mathematical models for global optimization. The efficiency of the LEA is validated through numerical experiments with CEC2017 benchmark functions, outperforming seven metaheuristic algorithms as evidenced by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Friedman test. Further tests using the CEC2022 benchmark functions confirm the competitiveness of the LEA compared to seven state-of-the-art metaheuristics. Lastly, the study extends to real-world problems, demonstrating the performance of the LEA across eight diverse engineering problems. A new swarm-based metaheuristic, namely the enriched coati osprey algorithm (ECOA), is proposed in this paper. As its name suggests, ECOA hybridizes two new metaheuristics, the coati optimization algorithm (COA) and the osprey optimization algorithm (OOA). ECOA is constructed by five searches performed sequentially by the swarm members. The first three are directed searches, while the last two are neighborhood searches. All three directed searches are adopted from COA and OOA. Meanwhile, the four-bordered neighborhood search is developed based on a new approach. During the assessment, ECOA was challenged to overcome the set of 23 functions and contended with five new metaheuristics: total interaction algorithm (TIA), golden search optimization (GSO), average and subtraction-based optimization (ASBO), COA, and OOA. The result shows that ECOA outperforms TIA, GSO, ASBO, COA, and OOA in 16, 23, 18, 21, and 21 functions. Meanwhile, the individual search test result shows that the directed searches perform better than the neighborhood searches. Neutrosophic set is a branch of neutrosophy concerned with nature, the genesis, and breadth of impartialities, and also their interaction with various mental spectra. Neutrosophic sets constitute relatively new expansions of intuitionistic fuzzy. In a short period of time, numerous researchers have accepted neutrosophic reasoning. Many researchers have linked neutrosophic science and metaheuristics in various ways over the last ten years. Metaheuristic research has attracted a great attention throughout the literature, which covers methodologies, apps, comparative analysis; due to its higher intensities and fruitful implementations. Metaheuristic algorithms are used to introduce the best or the optimum solutions to a lot of optimization problems due to the behavior of these algorithms inspired by Nature and its ability to adapt to problems, as well as the possibility of integrating more than one algorithm to reach the best solutions. Based on the previous reason, many researchers used these algorithms with neutrosophic science to present many platforms in the recent years, which was the motivation to introduce this survey paper. In recent decades, researches on optimizing the parameter of the artificial neural network (ANN) model has attracted significant attention from researchers. Hybridization of superior algorithms helps improving optimization performance and capable of solving complex applications. As a traditional gradient-based learning algorithm, ANN suffers from a slow learning rate and is easily trapped in local minima when training techniques such as gradient descent (GD) and back-propagation (BP) algorithm are used. The characteristics of randomization and selection of the best or near-optimal solution of metaheuristic algorithm provide an effective and robust solution; therefore, it has always been used in training of ANN to improve and overcome the above problems. New metaheuristic algorithms are proposed every year. Therefore, the review of its latest developments is essential. This article attempts to summarize the metaheuristic algorithms which have been proposed from the year 1975 to 2020 from various journals, conferences, technical papers, and books. The comparison of the popularity of the metaheuristic algorithm is presented in two time frames, such as algorithms proposed in the recent 20 years and those proposed earlier. Then, some of the popular metaheuristic algorithms and their working principle are reviewed. This article further categorizes the latest metaheuristic search algorithm in the literature to indicate their efficiency in training ANN for various industry applications. More and more researchers tend to develop new hybrid optimization tools by combining two or more metaheuristic algorithms to optimize the training parameters of ANN. Generally, the algorithm's optimal performance must be able to achieve a fine balance of their exploration and exploitation characteristics. Hence, this article tries to compare and summarize the properties of various metaheuristic algorithms in terms of their convergence rate and the ability to avoid the local minima. This paper proposes a novel metaheuristic-based optimization technique called search space reduction (SSR) optimization algorithm. This algorithm attempts to solve the common pitfalls in the existing algorithms in the literature by randomly generating the search agents in every iteration instead of following the best solution. This new algorithm is simple, computationally efficient, which is based on the concept of reducing the search space. The performance of this algorithm is tested over classical test functions and CEC'17 benchmark test functions. The results are compared with well-established algorithms in the literature. The test results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits good exploration and exploitation capabilities. Further, this algorithm also outperforms other algorithms in solving multimodal optimization problems. In addition to this, the computational complexity of this algorithm is also presented according to CEC'17 guidelines. In this paper, a new metaheuristic algorithm called JAYA algorithm has been adapted for feature selection. Feature selection is a typical problem in machine learning and data mining domain concerned with determining the subset of high discriminative features from the irrelevant, noisy, redundant, and high-dimensional features. JAYA algorithm is initially proposed for continuous optimization. Due to the binary nature of the feature selection problem, the JAYA algorithm is adjusted using sinusoidal (i.e., S-shape) transfer function. Furthermore, the mutation operator controlled by adaptive mutation rate ( R m ) parameter is also utilized to control the diversity during the search. The proposed binary JAYA algorithm with adaptive mutation is called BJAM algorithm. The performance of BJAM algorithm is tested using 22 real-world benchmark datasets, which vary in terms of the number of features and the number of instances. Four measures are used for performance analysis: classification accuracy, number of features, fitness values, and computational times. Initially, a comparison between binary JAYA (BJA) algorithm and the proposed BJAM algorithm is conducted to show the effect of the mutation operator in the convergence behavior. After that, the results produced by the BJAM algorithm are compared against those yielded by ten state-of-the-art methods. Surprisingly, the proposed BJAM algorithm is able to excel other comparative methods in 7 out of 22 datasets in terms of classification accuracy. This can lead to the conclusion that the proposed BJAM algorithm is an efficient algorithm for the problems belonging to the feature selection domain and is pregnant with fruitful results. The sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is a well-known meta-heuristic optimization algorithm. SCA has received much attention in various optimization fields due to its simple structure and excellent optimization capabilities. However, the dimension of objective function also increases with the increasing complexity of optimization tasks. This makes the original SCA appear to have insufficient optimization capability and likely to fall into premature convergence. A multi-mechanism acting variant of SCA, called ARSCA, is proposed to address the above deficiencies. ARSCA is an enhanced SCA algorithm based on the adaptive quadratic interpolation mechanism (AQIM) and Rounding mechanism (RM). RM enables a more balanced state between exploration and exploitation of the ARSCA. AQIM enhances local exploitation capabilities. To verify the performance of ARSCA, we compared ARSCA with some advanced traditional optimization algorithms and variants of algorithms for 30 consecutive benchmark functions of IEEE CEC2014. In addition, ARSCA was applied to 6 constrained engineering optimization problems. These six algorithms include the tension–compression spring design problem, the welded beam design problem, the pressure vessel design problem, the I-beam design problem, the speed reducer design problem, and the three-bar design problem. Experimental results show that ARSCA outperforms its competitors in both the solution quality and the ability to jump out of the local optimum. In this paper, six metaheuristic algorithms, in the form of artificial bee colony optimization, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, differential evolution, firefly algorithm and teaching-learning-based optimization techniques are applied for parametric optimization of a multi-pass face milling process. Using those algorithms, the optimal values of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut for both roughing and finishing operations are determined for having minimum total production time and total production cost. It is observed that the teaching-learning-based optimization algorithm outperforms the others with respect to accuracy and consistency of the derived solutions as well as computational speed. Two statistical tests, i.e. paired t-test and Wilcoxson signed rank test also confirm its superiority over the remaining algorithms. Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) algorithm is to minimize the objective under the probabilistic factors. While gradient-based and classical evolutionary RBDO algorithms provide promising performance on simple optimization problems, they are likely to perform poorly on challenging problems, including the multimodal functions, discrete design spaces, non-differential problems, etc. This paper proposes a unified framework to improve the performance of existing RBDO algorithms for complex RBDO problems. Our framework is based on three new strategies: generalized decoupling evolutionary and metaheuristic RBDO framework, particle's memory saving strategy, and adaptive fractional-order equilibrium optimizer algorithm. The proposed algorithm is characterized by a decoupling strategy to enable the parallel operation of the inner reliability computation and outer deterministic optimization, a particle's memory saving strategy to provide effective guidance from the previous iteration, and the adaptive fractional-order equilibrium optimizer algorithm to enhance the search efficiency and global convergence capacity. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a wide range of experiments are conducted on different types of use cases. Nature-inspired population-based metaheuristics are promising search methods for solving optimization problems. In this paper, a novel systematic pre-processing approach, called the combination lock algorithm, for obtaining a good starting point for population-based algorithms is proposed. The proposed algorithm is tested on 32 benchmark unconstrained multidimensional optimization problems of different characteristics that are either unimodal or multimodal, continuous or non-continuous, separable or non-separable, differentiable or non-differentiable. The tests also include four engineering constrained optimization benchmark problems. The experimental results of applying the proposed algorithm for the Particle Swarm Optimization, the Ant Colony Optimization for Continuous Domain, and the Grey Wolf Optimization were compared with the results obtained from the conventional approach of initializing the starting population of population-based metaheuristic methods. The simulation results show the potential of the proposed algorithm as an efficient and reliable approach to enhance the performance of population-based optimization algorithms such that, overall, 50% and up to 100% of the tested problems "across various population size" settings, had either improved or equalled the optimal values when the proposed algorithm was applied.
