This paper proposes the Love Evolution Algorithm (LEA), a novel evolutionary algorithm inspired by the stimulus–value–role theory. The optimization process of the LEA includes three phases: stimulus, value, and role. Both partners evolve through these phases and benefit from them regardless of the outcome of the relationship. This inspiration is abstracted into mathematical models for global optimization. The efficiency of the LEA is validated through numerical experiments with CEC2017 benchmark functions, outperforming seven metaheuristic algorithms as evidenced by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Friedman test. Further tests using the CEC2022 benchmark functions confirm the competitiveness of the LEA compared to seven state-of-the-art metaheuristics. Lastly, the study extends to real-world problems, demonstrating the performance of the LEA across eight diverse engineering problems. The chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) is a nature-inspired algorithm that imitates chimpanzees' individual intelligence and hunting behaviors. In this algorithm, the hunting process consists of four steps: driving, blocking, chasing, and attacking. Because of the novelty of ChOA, the steps of the hunting process have been modeled in the simplest possible way, leading to slow and premature convergence similar to other iterative algorithms. This paper proposes six spiral functions and introduces two novel hybrid spiral functions (SEB-ChOA) to rectify the abovementioned deficiencies. The SEB-ChOAs' performance is evaluated on 23 standard benchmarks, 20 benchmarks of IEEE CEC-2005, 10 cases of IEEE CEC06-2019 test-suite, and 12 constrained real-world engineering problems of IEEE CEC-2020. The SEB-ChOAs are compared with three groups of optimization algorithms, including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) as the most well-known optimization algorithms, Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), Ant Lion Optimization (ALO), Henry Gas Solubility Optimization (HGSO), as almost novel optimization algorithms, and jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12, as winners of IEEE CEC06-2019 competition, and also EBOwithCMAR and CIPDE as superior secondary optimization algorithms. The SEB-ChOAs reached the first rank among almost all benchmarks and demonstrated very competitive results compared to jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 as the best-performing optimizers. Statistical evidence shows that the SEB-ChOA outperforms the PSO, GA, SMA, MPA, ALO, and HGSO optimizers while producing results comparable to those of the jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 algorithms. In numerous scientific disciplines and practical applications, addressing optimization challenges is a common imperative. Nature-inspired optimization algorithms represent a highly valuable and pragmatic approach to tackling these complexities. This paper introduces Dendritic Growth Optimization (DGO), a novel algorithm inspired by natural branching patterns. DGO offers a novel solution for intricate optimization problems and demonstrates its efficiency in exploring diverse solution spaces. The algorithm has been extensively tested with a suite of machine learning algorithms, deep learning algorithms, and metaheuristic algorithms, and the results, both before and after optimization, unequivocally support the proposed algorithm's feasibility, effectiveness, and generalizability. Through empirical validation using established datasets like diabetes and breast cancer, the algorithm consistently enhances model performance across various domains. Beyond its working and experimental analysis, DGO's wide-ranging applications in machine learning, logistics, and engineering for solving real-world problems have been highlighted. A new swarm-based metaheuristic, namely the enriched coati osprey algorithm (ECOA), is proposed in this paper. As its name suggests, ECOA hybridizes two new metaheuristics, the coati optimization algorithm (COA) and the osprey optimization algorithm (OOA). ECOA is constructed by five searches performed sequentially by the swarm members. The first three are directed searches, while the last two are neighborhood searches. All three directed searches are adopted from COA and OOA. Meanwhile, the four-bordered neighborhood search is developed based on a new approach. During the assessment, ECOA was challenged to overcome the set of 23 functions and contended with five new metaheuristics: total interaction algorithm (TIA), golden search optimization (GSO), average and subtraction-based optimization (ASBO), COA, and OOA. The result shows that ECOA outperforms TIA, GSO, ASBO, COA, and OOA in 16, 23, 18, 21, and 21 functions. Meanwhile, the individual search test result shows that the directed searches perform better than the neighborhood searches. Population-based metaheuristics can be seen as a set of agents that smartly explore the space of solutions of a given optimization problem. These agents are commonly governed by movement operators that decide how the exploration is driven. Although metaheuristics have successfully been used for more than 20 years, performing rapid and high-quality parameter control is still a main concern. For instance, deciding the proper population size yielding a good balance between quality of results and computing time is constantly a hard task, even more so in the presence of an unexplored optimization problem. In this paper, we propose a self-adaptive strategy based on the on-line population balance, which aims for improvements in the performance and search process on population-based algorithms. The design behind the proposed approach relies on three different components. Firstly, an optimization-based component which defines all metaheuristic tasks related to carry out the resolution of the optimization problems. Secondly, a learning-based component focused on transforming dynamic data into knowledge in order to influence the search in the solution space. Thirdly, a probabilistic-based selector component is designed to dynamically adjust the population. We illustrate an extensive experimental process on large instance sets from three well-known discrete optimization problems: Manufacturing Cell Design Problem, Set covering Problem, and Multidimensional Knapsack Problem. Metaheuristic optimization algorithms (MHA) play a significant role in obtaining the best (optimal) values of the system's parameters to improve its performance. This role is significantly apparent when dealing with systems where the classical analytical methods fail. Fractional-order (FO) systems have not yet shown an easy procedure to deal with the determination of their optimal parameters through traditional methods. In this paper, a recent, systematic. And comprehensive review is presented to highlight the role of MHA in obtaining the best set of gains and orders for FO controllers. The systematic review starts by exploring the most relevant publications related to the MHA and the FO controllers. The study is focused on the most popular controllers such as the FO-PI, FO-PID, FO Type-1 fuzzy-PID, and FO Type-2 fuzzy-PID. The time domain is restricted in the articles published through the last decade (2014:2023) in the most reputed databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. The identified number of papers, from the entire databases, has reached 850 articles. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology was applied to the initial set of articles to be screened and filtered to end up with a final list that contains 82 articles. Then, a thorough and comprehensive study was applied to the final list. The results showed that Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is the most attractive optimizer to the researchers to be used in the optimal parameters identification of the FO controllers as it attains about 25% of the published papers. In addition, the papers that used PSO as an optimizer have gained a high citation number despite the fact that the Chaotic Atom Search Optimization (ChASO) is the highest one, but it is used only once. Furthermore, the Integral of the Time-Weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) is the best nominated cost function. Based on our comprehensive literature review, this appears to be the first review paper that systematically and comprehensively addresses the optimization of the parameters of the fractional-order PI, PID, Type-1, and Type-2 fuzzy controllers with the use of MHAs. This paper presents two hybrid optimization methods known as PSOHHO and DPSOHHO optimization algorithms. In the first method, using a number of formulae, the top populations are exchanged between the two algorithms and a new population is created and in the second method, we adopted the parallel optimization and optimized its performance. In this method, unlike other parallel methods, the population does not remain constant. With this ability, the strengths of an algorithm can be used to compensate for the weaknesses of the other algorithm. In these methods, no changes are made to the algorithms. The main goal is to use existing algorithms. These methods attain the optimal solution in the shortest time possible. Two algorithms of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Harris Hawks's optimization (HHO) are used to present this method and two truss samples and CEC209 are considered to confirm the performance of this method. This paper proposes a new method for encryption of RGB color images by combining two encryption approaches: the spatial approach and the transformation approach. The proposed method uses the 3D fractional modified Henon map (3D FrMHM) and the discrete fractional Krawtchouk moments (FrDKM). We have also proposed a new hybrid optimization algorithm (H-SSAOA) to optimize the parameters of the proposed Henon map and the parameters of the Krawtchouk fractional moments. This algorithm is based on the hybridization of two metaheuristic algorithms: the "Salp Swarm Algorithm" (SSA) and the "Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm" (AOA). The simulation results reveal the optimization efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithm H-SSAOA compared to other meta-heuristic algorithms and the efficiency of the suggested encryption method for encrypting RGB color images in terms of sensitivity to the security key and resistance to different attacks. The parameter extraction of Photovoltaic (PV) cell and module is a necessary to simulate and evaluate the performance of the PV system. The parameter extraction is a complex and challenging task due to its non-linear nature. Researchers are used several metaheuristic algorithms to solve the non-linear problem of parameter extraction. However, the demand for most accurate and reliable methods is increasing to get precise estimation of parameters. In this paper, a novel hybrid optimization algorithm is proposed based on the Spotted-Hyena optimization (SHO) and Ant Lion Optimization (ALO). The hybrid method is called as Spotted Hyena - Ant Lion (SH-AL) optimization. The optimization algorithm is applied in two stages. In stage 1, essential parameters are identified and extracted using SHO and passed to stage 2. In stage 2, identified parameters are optimized using ALO for accurate model of PV cell. Different type of PV cells such as thin film, mono and multi crystalline are examined under various irradiance conditions to extract the parameters. This paper presents an effective approach for solving economic load dispatch problems contemplating the scheduling a set of thermal generating units to produce a specific power at low consumption costs. These problems can be thought of as nonlinear, non-convex, and highly constrained optimization problems with a large number of local minima. To cope with the above issues in solving such problems, a new meta-heuristic named capuchin search algorithm was adopted. To boost the search performance of this algorithm as well as to mitigate its early convergence and regression to the local optimum, it was hybridized with another algorithm and improved using several positive amendments. First, a memory element was added to this algorithm to ameliorate its position and velocity update mechanisms in order to exploit the most encouraging candidate solutions. Second, two adaptive parametric functions were used to manage the exploration and exploitation features of this algorithm and balance them appropriately. Finally, the hybridization was made using the gradient-based optimizer to strengthen the intensification ability of this algorithm and balance its searching ability to fulfill sensible search performance. The proficiency of the proposed algorithm was divulged by assessing it on computationally difficult economic load dispatch problems under 6 different tests with a generator of 3, 13, 40, 80, and 140 units, each with different constraints and load conditions. The proposed algorithm provided the best performance among many other competitors. Since the past few years, several metaheuristic algorithms, inspired by the natural processes, have been introduced to solve different complex optimization problems. Studying and comparing the convergence, computational burden and statistical significance of those metaheuristics are helpful for future algorithmic development and their applications. This paper focuses on comparing the optimization performance of classical dragonfly algorithm (DA) and its seven different variants, i.e., hybrid memory-based dragonfly algorithm with differential evolution (DADE), quantum-behaved and Gaussian mutational dragonfly algorithm (QGDA), memory-based hybrid dragonfly algorithm (MHDA), chaotic dragonfly algorithm (CDA), biogeography-based Mexican hat wavelet dragonfly algorithm (BMDA), hybrid Nelder–Mead algorithm and dragonfly algorithm (INMDA) and hybridization of dragonfly algorithm and artificial bee colony (HDA) while solving 80 CEC-2021 benchmark problems. It is observed that the convergence rates of different variants of DA algorithm vary, and the corresponding computational times for such variations are also evaluated. This paper finally ranks DA and its variants according to their convergence efficiency and Friedman test. In this paper, a hybrid nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm based on the Genetic Algorithm and the African Buffalo Optimization is proposed. The hybrid approach adaptively switches between the Genetic Algorithm and the African Buffalo Optimization during the optimization process, leveraging their respective strengths to improve performance. To improve randomness, the hybrid approach uses two high-quality pseudorandom number generators—the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of the SIMD-Oriented Fast Mersenne Twister. The effectiveness of the hybrid algorithm is evaluated on the NP-hard Container Relocation Problem, focusing on a test set of restricted Container Relocation Problems with higher complexity. The results show that the hybrid algorithm outperforms the individual Genetic Algorithm and the African Buffalo Optimization, which use standard pseudorandom number generators. The adaptive switch method allows the algorithm to adapt to different optimization problems and mitigate problems such as premature convergence and local optima. Moreover, the importance of pseudorandom number generator selection in metaheuristic algorithms is highlighted, as it directly affects the optimization results. The use of powerful pseudorandom number generators reduces the probability of premature convergence and local optima, leading to better optimization results. Optimization is essential in various fields such as finance, transportation, energy, and health care. However, solving real optimization problems, especially nondeterministic polynomial, requires considerable computational resources. Metaheuristics provide fast and cost-effective solutions to these problems. In this paper, eight state-of-the-art natureinspired metaheuristic algorithms that have demonstrated excellent performance are compared in detail. In addition, a novel tournament procedure has been proposed to produce a quality ranking of selected metaheuristic algorithms, which are compared based on their optimization results, even if they were not originally tested with the same set of test functions, but only partially. The selected algorithms are evaluated using thirty-two test functions, which is a representative sample size. The evaluation also showed that while one algorithm produced the best overall results, this does not mean that this algorithm is the best for solving each function. Recently, substantial progress has been made in developing efficient algorithms for solving combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, following this direction, the problem of designing supply chains which is an important combinatorial optimization problem is considered. The structural properties of supply chain models are investigated to transform such models into a generalized network optimization model. The transformation to a generalized network optimization model reduces the algorithms' solution time. Moreover, this paper proposes a new efficient hybrid algorithm based on tabu search and generalized network simplex algorithm (GN-TSA) for designing multi-objectives supply chain models. The developed algorithm's parameters are tuned properly, validated, and evaluated. The algorithm's performance is then compared to an exact algorithm embedded in the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) and two metaheuristic algorithms, namely a linear programming simplex algorithm integrated with the tabu search approach (LP-TSA) and simulated annealing. The findings indicated that the GN-TSA obtains solutions very close to the exact algorithm with less computation time. In addition, the proposed algorithm outperforms the LP-TSA and simulated annealing in terms of computation time, while the quality of the solutions is the same as solutions obtained by LP-TSA and better than simulated annealing. This paper proposes a novel algorithm to optimize the discrete time-cost trade-off problem (DTCTP) in construction projects. As DTCTP is assumed NP-hard, the new metaheuristic models are investigated to contribute for decision-making of project managers. DTCTP can be modelled as multi-mode to represent real-life problems more practical. According to the model, the project activities have at least two or more durations and cost alternative modes. For solving this problem effectively, a novel optimization metaheuristic method named Advanced Jaya Algorithm (A-JA) is proposed, which is generated from Jaya Algorithm (JA). The benchmark function tests are applied to verify the model with other well-known metaheuristic methods. The key weakness of the base algorithm JA is that, it has unstable solution accuracy and low likelihood of escaping local optimums. According to the results, A-JA considerably improves these areas. Two case studies of DTCTP are carried out after verification to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm in comparison with JA and three well-known methods. The results of A-JA are found to be more powerful than the base algorithm JA and the benchmark algorithms. In many disciplines, including pattern recognition, data mining, machine learning, image analysis, and bioinformatics, data clustering is a common analytical tool for data statistics. The majority of conventional clustering techniques are slow to converge and frequently get stuck in local optima. In this regard, population-based meta-heuristic algorithms are used to overcome the problem of getting trapped in local optima and increase the convergence speed. An asymmetric approach to clustering the asymmetric self-organizing map is proposed in this paper. The Interactive Autodidactic School (IAS) is one of these population-based metaheuristic and asymmetry algorithms used to solve the clustering problem. The chaotic IAS algorithm also increases exploitation and generates a better population. In the proposed model, ten different chaotic maps and the intra-cluster summation fitness function have been used to improve the results of the IAS. According to the simulation findings, the IAS based on the Chebyshev chaotic function outperformed other chaotic IAS iterations and other metaheuristic algorithms. The efficacy of the proposed model is finally highlighted by comparing its performance with optimization algorithms in terms of fitness function and convergence rate. The optimization problems are becoming more complicated, requiring new and efficient optimization techniques to solve them. Many bio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithms have emerged in the last decade to solve these complex problems as most of these algorithms may be trapped into local optima and could not effectively solve all types of optimization problems. Hence, researchers are still trying to develop new and better optimization algorithms. This paper introduces a novel biologically-based optimization algorithm called circulatory system-based optimization (CSBO). CSBO is modeled based on the function of the body's blood vessels with two distinctive circuits, i.e. pulmonary and systemic circuits. The proposed CSBO algorithm is tested on a wide variety of complex functions of the real world and validated with the standard meta-heuristic algorithms. Neutrosophic set is a branch of neutrosophy concerned with nature, the genesis, and breadth of impartialities, and also their interaction with various mental spectra. Neutrosophic sets constitute relatively new expansions of intuitionistic fuzzy. In a short period of time, numerous researchers have accepted neutrosophic reasoning. Many researchers have linked neutrosophic science and metaheuristics in various ways over the last ten years. Metaheuristic research has attracted a great attention throughout the literature, which covers methodologies, apps, comparative analysis; due to its higher intensities and fruitful implementations. Metaheuristic algorithms are used to introduce the best or the optimum solutions to a lot of optimization problems due to the behavior of these algorithms inspired by Nature and its ability to adapt to problems, as well as the possibility of integrating more than one algorithm to reach the best solutions. Optimization problems are prevalent in almost all areas and hence optimization algorithms are crucial for a myriad of real-world applications. Deterministic optimization algorithms tend to be computationally costly and time-consuming. Hence, heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms are more favoured as they provide near-optimal solutions in an acceptable amount of time. Swarm intelligence algorithms are being increasingly used for optimization problems owing to their simplicity and good performance. The Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) is one which is inspired by the swarming behaviours of dragonflies, and it has been proven to have a superior performance than other algorithms in multiple applications. Hence, it is worth considering its application to the traveling salesman problem which is a predominant discrete optimization problem. The original DA is only suitable for solving continuous optimization problems and, although there is a binary version of the algorithm, it is not easily adapted for solving discrete optimization problems like TSP. We have previously proposed a discrete adapted DA algorithm suitable for TSP. However, it has low effectiveness, and it has not been used for large TSP problems. In this paper, we propose an optimized discrete adapted DA by using the steepest ascent hill climbing algorithm as a local search. The algorithm is applied to a TSP problem modelling a package delivery system in the Kuala Lumpur area and to benchmark TSP problems, and it is found to have a higher effectiveness than the discrete adapted DA and some other swarm intelligence algorithms. Most metaheuristic methods employ a strategy designed to be generical and fixed. As a result, these methods often lack the capability to adaptively modify their performance in response to different scenarios or challenges encountered during the search process. This paper presents a new metaheuristic algorithm designed to dynamically adjust its search strategy throughout the optimization process for increased efficiency. This algorithm is based on Evolutionary Strategies (ES) due to their notable self-adaptive features. To further enhance its efficiency, we have incorporated elements from Evolutionary Game Theory (EGT). This integration ensures a more comprehensive strategy adaptation process, taking into account not only the information from the specific agent but also insights from other population members. Additionally, our approach alters the conventional EGT mechanism by including not just pairwise evaluations but also data from the top-performing individuals in the population, based on their outcomes. This broader adaptation strategy allows for a faster convergence to the most effective dominant strategy. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we compared it against several established metaheuristic algorithms using 28 diverse test functions. Optimization is a very important issue to efficiently solve engineering problems. The clear comprehension of the elements and processes of optimizer algorithms is fundamental to ensure that engineer students are capable to apply, tune, and design new algorithms. This paper presents an educational platform based on LEGO© EV3 and MATLAB to assist the learning of the principles of classical and metaheuristic optimization algorithms at undergraduate level, by providing a simple and easy-to-follow teaching setup. The proposed study aims to accompany students through the learning of optimization fundamentals by building hands-on robotic experiments. The proposed educational platform has been successfully applied to several undergraduate courses within the Electronics Department at the University of Guadalajara. Many metaheuristic approaches are inherently stochastic. In order to compare such methods, statistical tests are needed. However, choosing an appropriate test is not trivial, given that each test has some assumptions about the distribution of the underlying data that must be true before it can be used. Permutation tests (P-Tests) are statistical tests with minimal number of assumptions. These tests are simple, intuitive and nonparametric. In this paper, we argue researchers in the field of metaheuristics to adopt P-Tests to compare their algorithms. We define two statistic tests and then present an algorithm that uses them to compute the p-value. The proposed process is used to compare 5 metaheuristic algorithms on 10 benchmark functions. The resulting p-values are compared with the p-values of two widely used statistical tests. The weapon target assignment (WTA) problem is an important task to tactical arrangements in military commitment operations. It describes the optimal method to allocate defense in opposition to threats in fighting situations. It is an NP-complete issue in which no accurate outcome for all conceivable situations is known. The time performance of created algorithms is a major challenge in modeling the WTA problem, which has only been lately considered in related papers. This article improves the recently developed algorithm called improved Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (iTSA) which is inspired by the natural behavior of tunicates to solve the WTA problem. The suggested method is compared with well-known metaheuristic approaches. The experimental findings show that the method presented works better than previous competing metaheuristic approaches. The surface roughness is very important factor for product quality. This paper presents an approach for determining the optimum machining parameters leading to minimum surface roughness during face milling process by nature-inspired algorithms. Face milling experiments were conducted on a vertical-spindle milling machine and experimental data were collected based on a three-factor-five-level design of experiment. The developed regression model for surface roughness was used to obtain optimal cutting parameters by nature-inspired algorithms (GA, PSO, and ACO). The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are relatively new optimization algorithms introduced to solve optimization problems in recent years. For example, the firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the fireflies' flashing behavior. However, its weakness in terms of exploration and early convergence has been pointed out. In this paper, two approaches were proposed to improve the FA. In the first proposed approach, a new improved opposition-based learning FA (IOFA) method was presented to accelerate the convergence and improve the FA's exploration capability. In the second proposed approach, a symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm improved the exploration and exploitation of the first approach; two new parameters set these two goals, and the second approach was named IOFASOS. The purpose of the second method is that in the process of the SOS algorithm, the whole population is effective in the IOFA method to find solutions in the early stages of implementation, and with each iteration, fewer solutions are affected in the population. The experiments on 24 standard benchmark functions were conducted, and the first proposed approach showed a better performance in the small and medium dimensions and exhibited a relatively moderate performance in the higher dimensions. In contrast, the second proposed approach was better in increasing dimensions. In general, the empirical results showed that the two new approaches outperform other algorithms in most mathematical benchmarking functions. Thus, The IOFASOS model has more efficient solutions. Nowadays, the existence of continuous optimization problems has led researchers to come up with a variety of methods to solve continues optimization problems. The metaheuristic algorithms are one of the most popular and common ways to solve continuous optimization problems. Firefly Algorithm (FA) is a successful metaheuristic algorithm for solving continuous optimization problems; however, although this algorithm performs very well in local search, it has weaknesses and disadvantages in finding solution in global search. This problem has caused this algorithm to be trapped locally and the balance between exploration and exploitation cannot be well maintained. In this paper, three different approaches based on the Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) processes and the OBL method are proposed to improve exploration, performance, efficiency and information-sharing of the FA and to avoid the FA getting stuck in local trap. In the first proposed method (FADA), the robust processes of DA are used to improve the exploration, performance and efficiency of the FA; and the second proposed method (OFA) uses an Opposition-Based Learning (OBL) algorithm to accelerate the convergence and exploration of the FA. Finally, in the third approach, which is referred to as OFADA in this paper, a hybridization of the hybrid FADA and the OBL method is used to improve the convergence and accuracy of the FA. The three proposed methods were implemented on functions with 2, 4, 10, and 30 dimensions. The results of the implementation of these three proposed methods showed that OFADA approach outperformed the other two proposed methods and other compared metaheuristic algorithms in different dimensions. In addition, all the three proposed methods provided better results compared with other metaheuristic algorithms on small-dimensional functions. However, performance of many metaheuristic algorithms decreased with increasing the dimensions of the functions. While the three proposed methods, in particular the OFADA approach, have been able to make better converge with the higher-dimensional optimization functions toward the target in comparison with other metaheuristic algorithms, and to show a high performance. This paper presents a novel meta-heuristic algorithm called Ali Baba and the forty thieves (AFT) for solving global optimization problems. Recall the famous tale of Ali Baba and the forty thieves, where Ali Baba once saw a gang of forty thieves enter a strange cave filled with all kinds of treasures. The strategies pursued by the forty thieves in the search for Ali Baba inspired us to design ideas and underlie the basic concepts to put forward the mathematical models and implement the exploration and exploitation processes of the proposed algorithm. The performance of the AFT algorithm was assessed on a set of basic benchmark test functions and two more challenging benchmarks called IEEE CEC-2017 and IEEE CEC-C06 2019 benchmark test functions. These benchmarks cover simple and complex test functions with various dimensions and levels of complexity. An extensive comparative study was performed between the AFT algorithm and other well-studied algorithms, and the significance of the results was proved by statistical test methods. To study the potential performance of AFT, its further development is discussed and carried out from five aspects. Finally, the applicability of the AFT algorithm was subsequently demonstrated in solving five engineering design problems. As distribution networks operate in their majority in a radial way, this condition becomes one of the most important constraints of distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) problem. There are diverse ways to represent this in DNR, but a lack of studies that provide an analysis of its behavior is noted, specially regarding its influence in metaheuristics and bio‐inspired metaheuristics. This paper presents a discussion between two alternatives to represent this in DNR in conjunction with three new bio‐inspired metaheuristics. One is based on the formation of the incidence matrix of the system and its determinant; the other is a modified approach of a method that establishes a set of forbidden switches through the analysis of the system fundamental loops. To solve DNR, three new bio‐inspired metaheuristics are presented: monarch butterfly optimization (MBO), gray wolf optimizer (GWO), and marine predators algorithm (MPA). A comparison is performed with selective particle swarm optimization (SPSO). This paper presents a powerful swarm intelligence metaheuristic optimization algorithm called Dynamic Cat Swarm Optimization. The formulation is through modifying the existing Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm. The original Cat Swarm Optimization suffers from the shortcoming of "premature convergence," which is the possibility of entrapment in local optima which usually happens due to the off balance between exploration and exploitation phases. Therefore, the proposed algorithm suggests a new method to provide a proper balance between these phases by modifying the selection scheme and the seeking mode of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, 23 classical test functions, 10 modern test functions (CEC 2019) and a real-world scenario are used. In addition, the dimension-wise diversity metric is used to measure the percentage of the exploration and exploitation phases. The optimization results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which ranks first compared to several well-known algorithms available in the literature. Furthermore, statistical methods and graphs are also used to further confirm the outperformance of the algorithm. In this paper, an evolutionary optimization procedure is presented to generate band-pass metasurface-based filters in terahertz regime. As a measure of novelty, pass-band, transition, and out-band characteristics are investigated separately, all of which result in different metasurfaces for filtering applications. The presented approach is defined based on random hill climbing algorithm, regarding the established link between Matlab and HFSS software. A metasurface-based filter with specific properties is considered as the main problem to be solved by the optimization method. Moreover, the fuzzy theory, mean square method, and weighting coefficient procedure are considered to define an efficient fitness function evaluation approach. Also, a step-by-step procedure is used to generate desired structures with a great note of efficiency. The final generated structure has magnificent characteristics including sharp transitions together with transmittance around 0.68 and less than 0.04 at pass-band and out-band regions, respectively. Feature transformation methods can be used effectively to improve the performance of the machine learning techniques, such as classification and clustering, via enhancing the discrimination among the samples. Additionally, binary representation of features may be necessary in several circumstances. For example, distributed systems may have limited bandwidth, storage, and energy that necessitate rough quantization of the measurements. This paper proposes a random projection-based feature transformation method that maps the data points from the original space into a new binary space. In the proposed transformation method, the random projection process is formulated as an optimization problem. A modified chaotic version of the sine–cosine algorithm is used to find the optimal random projector. The performance of the proposed transformation method is validated using 15 standard UCI benchmark datasets against the linear discernment analysis. Moreover, it is compared to other metaheuristic-based feature reduction methods including the gray wolf optimizer, the genetic algorithm, and the antlion optimizer. In recent decades, researches on optimizing the parameter of the artificial neural network (ANN) model has attracted significant attention from researchers. Hybridization of superior algorithms helps improving optimization performance and capable of solving complex applications. As a traditional gradient-based learning algorithm, ANN suffers from a slow learning rate and is easily trapped in local minima when training techniques such as gradient descent (GD) and back-propagation (BP) algorithm are used. The comparison of the popularity of the metaheuristic algorithm is presented in two time frames, such as algorithms proposed in the recent 20 years and those proposed earlier. Then, some of the popular metaheuristic algorithms and their working principle are reviewed. This article further categorizes the latest metaheuristic search algorithm in the literature to indicate their efficiency in training ANN for various industry applications. This paper proposes a novel metaheuristic-based optimization technique called search space reduction (SSR) optimization algorithm. This algorithm attempts to solve the common pitfalls in the existing algorithms in the literature by randomly generating the search agents in every iteration instead of following the best solution. This new algorithm is simple, computationally efficient, which is based on the concept of reducing the search space. The performance of this algorithm is tested over classical test functions and CEC'17 benchmark test functions. The results are compared with well-established algorithms in the literature. This paper proposes an efficient approach based on Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) for extracting the parameters of the electrical equivalent circuit of PV cell based double-diode model. The experimental and comparative results demonstrate that SSA is highly competitive with the results of two algorithms that have never been used before for the PV cell parameter extraction namely Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) and Virus Colony Search Algorithm (VCS). SSA is also significantly better than three well-established parameter extraction algorithms namely Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO), Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). In this paper, a new metaheuristic algorithm called JAYA algorithm has been adapted for feature selection. Feature selection is a typical problem in machine learning and data mining domain concerned with determining the subset of high discriminative features from the irrelevant, noisy, redundant, and high-dimensional features. JAYA algorithm is initially proposed for continuous optimization. Due to the binary nature of the feature selection problem, the JAYA algorithm is adjusted using sinusoidal (i.e., S-shape) transfer function. Furthermore, the mutation operator controlled by adaptive mutation rate ( R m ) parameter is also utilized to control the diversity during the search. The proposed binary JAYA algorithm with adaptive mutation is called BJAM algorithm. The performance of BJAM algorithm is tested using 22 real-world benchmark datasets, which vary in terms of the number of features and the number of instances. Four measures are used for performance analysis: classification accuracy, number of features, fitness values, and computational times. Initially, a comparison between binary JAYA (BJA) algorithm and the proposed BJAM algorithm is conducted to show the effect of the mutation operator in the convergence behavior. After that, the results produced by the BJAM algorithm are compared against those yielded by ten state-of-the-art methods. Surprisingly, the proposed BJAM algorithm is able to excel other comparative methods in 7 out of 22 datasets in terms of classification accuracy. This can lead to the conclusion that the proposed BJAM algorithm is an efficient algorithm for the problems belonging to the feature selection domain and is pregnant with fruitful results. Due to the lack of experience and prior knowledge, the selection of the most informative features has become one of the challenging problems in many applications. Recently, many metaheuristic algorithms have widely used to solve the feature selection problem for classification tasks. In this paper, the chaotic atom search optimization (CASO) that integrates the chaotic maps into atom search optimization (ASO) is applied for wrapper feature selection. Twelve different chaotic maps are used to adjust the parameter of CASO through the optimization process, which is beneficial for enhancing the convergence rate and improving the efficiency of ASO algorithm. In this study, twenty benchmark datasets acquired from the UCI machine learning repository are used to validate the performance of CASO in feature selection. Several state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms are adopted to examine the efficacy and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Our results indicated that the Logistic-Tent map was the most suitable chaotic map to boost the performance of CASO. To verify the performance of ARSCA, we compared ARSCA with some advanced traditional optimization algorithms and variants of algorithms for 30 consecutive benchmark functions of IEEE CEC2014. Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms have significantly influenced the optimization problems, and there has been a great success in finding optimum solutions. The main aim of this paper is to introduce one such technique, runner-root algorithm (RRA), to the antenna community. RRA is based on the concept of plant intelligence to solve an optimization problem resembling a scenario where a plant finds the best location for its survival. The main advantage of RRA over other algorithms is the execution of exploration (global search) and exploitation (local search) phases independently with a built-in mechanism of reinitialization to overcome trapping in local minima. Hence, attempt has been made for the first time to apply this algorithm to optimize excitation current amplitudes and positions of antenna elements for linear array configurations with the objective of suppressing the sidelobe levels and/or placing nulls at prescribed locations referring to the radiation patterns. Different case studies have illustrated that RRA is capable of performing linear antenna array optimization with promising results in comparison with other well-established metaheuristic algorithms. In this paper, six metaheuristic algorithms, in the form of artificial bee colony optimization, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, differential evolution, firefly algorithm and teaching-learning-based optimization techniques are applied for parametric optimization of a multi-pass face milling process. Using those algorithms, the optimal values of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut for both roughing and finishing operations are determined for having minimum total production time and total production cost. It is observed that the teaching-learning-based optimization algorithm outperforms the others with respect to accuracy and consistency of the derived solutions as well as computational speed. Two statistical tests, i.e. paired t-test and Wilcoxson signed rank test also confirm its superiority over the remaining algorithms. The Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is a new advanced algorithm that is based on the humpback whale chasing process. The main problem addressed by Whale Optimization Algorithm, similar to other metaheuristic algorithms, is premature convergence. This paper introduces the Sine Cosine Algorithm in the Whale Optimization Algorithm optimization process to enhance global convergence and to improve enactment. The proposed algorithm, called WOA-SCA, has local optima evasion of Whale Optimization Algorithm and high capability to increase the exploration. The implementation of the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm is investigated through a series of tests on common benchmark test functions, with the results compared to those of six alternative algorithms. The results of the investigations show that the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm works better in concert with the outputs of the benchmark functions. Also, to validate the proficiencies of the WOA-SCA, it has been used to resolve the real-world problem of Facial Emotion Recognition (FER). The paper proposes the efficient Facial Emotion Recognition method using MultiSVNNN based on WOA-SCA (the proposed WOA-SCA based Multi-Support Vector Neural Network). Generation of circular holes with varying dimensions in diverse parts/products is one of the most common operations in any manufacturing industry. Determination of the optimal drill path sequence is an important problem in hole-drilling operation using CNC machines. This paper compares the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid metaheuristic algorithms for a class of unstable systems with time delay to that of the existing ones. The local search and global methods of optimization are combined to yield more effective hybrid metaheuristic algorithms. These algorithms are used to tune the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, satisfying the robust stabilizing vector gain margin (VGM). Six global heuristic algorithms namely ant colony optimization (ACO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), biogeography-based optimization (BBO), population-based incremental learning (PBIL), evolution strategy (ES), and stud genetic algorithms (StudGA) are combined with the local search property of derivative free optimization methods such as simplex derivative based pattern search (SDPS) and implicit filtering (IMF) to yield hybrid metaheuristic algorithms. The efficacy of the proposed control schemes in terms of various time domain specifications and stabilizing VGM are compared with some existing methods for unstable process with time delay (UPTD) systems. The performance of the proposed control schemes particularly in the context of uncertainty in the plant is demonstrated using a case study. In this paper a novel nature-inspired optimization paradigm is proposed called Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm. The main inspiration of this optimizer is the navigation method of moths in nature called transverse orientation. Moths fly in night by maintaining a fixed angle with respect to the moon, a very effective mechanism for travelling in a straight line for long distances. However, these fancy insects are trapped in a useless/deadly spiral path around artificial lights. This paper mathematically models this behaviour to perform optimization. The MFO algorithm is compared with other well-known nature-inspired algorithms on 29 benchmark and 7 real engineering problems. The statistical results on the benchmark functions show that this algorithm is able to provide very promising and competitive results. Additionally, the results of the real problems demonstrate the merits of this algorithm in solving challenging problems with constrained and unknown search spaces. The paper also considers the application of the proposed algorithm in the field of marine propeller design to further investigate its effectiveness in practice. Wind resource is one of the most promising renewable energy, which has become a suitable replacement for fossil fuels. Optimizing the transferring wind energy from a wind turbine is essential to obtain the maximum power output as other variables are uncontrollable. This paper presents four different optimization algorithms, namely ant lion optimization (ALO), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and crow search optimization (CSO), considering a hybrid decision-making model to compare the performances of wind energy optimization. In the first phase, the evolutionary algorithms are defined based on several factors to meet the need for wind energy based on volumetric and time reliability, reversibility, and vulnerability as well as evaluate optimized energy to the subscriber from the Gansu region. In the second phase, the ordinal priority approach (OPA) is coupled with VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method to rank the evolutionary algorithms. Then, the results are compared with the absolute optimal response based on the nonlinear programming method obtained from GAMS software. The results demonstrate that an ALO outperforms other algorithms. The average accuracy of ALO is 92%. CSO is the least accurate with 55% of the absolute optimal response. ALO is found to be faster, more efficient, and achieved economy and reliability as compared to other optimization algorithms for solving the problem under consideration. Graph drawing, or the automatic layout of graphs, is a challenging problem. There are several search based methods for graph drawing which are based on optimizing an objective function which is formed from a weighted sum of multiple criteria. In this paper, we propose a new neighbourhood search method which uses a tabu search coupled with path relinking to optimize such objective functions for general graph layouts with undirected straight lines. To our knowledge, before our work, neither of these methods have been previously used in general multi-criteria graph drawing. Tabu search uses a memory list to speed up searching by avoiding previously tested solutions, while the path relinking method generates new solutions by exploring paths that connect high quality solutions. We use path relinking periodically within the tabu search procedure to speed up the identification of good solutions. We have evaluated our new method against the commonly used neighbourhood search optimization techniques: hill climbing and simulated annealing. Our evaluation examines the quality of the graph layout (objective function’s value) and the speed of layout in terms of the number of evaluated solutions required to draw a graph. We also examine the relative scalability of each method. Our experimental results were applied to both random graphs and a real-world dataset. We show that our method outperforms both hill climbing and simulated annealing by producing a better layout in a lower number of evaluated solutions. In addition, we demonstrate that our method has greater scalability as it can layout larger graphs than the state-of-the-art neighbourhood search methods. Software test suites based on the concept of interaction testing are very useful for testing software components in an economical way. Test suites of this kind may be created using mathematical objects called covering arrays. A covering array, denoted by CA(N; t, k, v), is an N × k array over with the property that every N × t sub-array covers all t-tuples of at least once. Covering arrays can be used to test systems in which failures occur as a result of interactions among components or subsystems. They are often used in areas such as hardware Trojan detection, software testing, and network design. Because system testing is expensive, it is critical to reduce the amount of testing required. This paper addresses the Optimal Shortening of Covering ARrays (OSCAR) problem, an optimization problem whose objective is to construct, from an existing covering array matrix of uniform level, an array with dimensions of (N − δ) × (k − Δ) such that the number of missing t-tuples is minimized. Two applications of the OSCAR problem are (a) to produce smaller covering arrays from larger ones and (b) to obtain quasi-covering arrays (covering arrays in which the number of missing t-tuples is small) to be used as input to a meta-heuristic algorithm that produces covering arrays. In addition, it is proven that the OSCAR problem is NP-complete, and twelve different algorithms are proposed to solve it. An experiment was performed on 62 problem instances, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of solving the OSCAR problem to facilitate the construction of new covering arrays.
