Conventional multi-cylinder drying of paper and board involves a mixture of conductive drying from steam-heated dryer cylinders and convective drying by the flow of heated air over the surface of the paper web in the pockets. Pocket ventilation is a critical component in assisting heat and mass transfer during the drying process but is the primary contributor toward removing evaporated water from the web. Air temperature, velocity, and humidity are critical parameters involved in the convective drying process. This paper covers an experimental study involving the design and development of a small lab-scale setup for convective drying of various grades of paper and board, monitoring multiple parameters like paper temperature, moisture content, air humidity, temperature, and velocity measured in situ as the drying proceeds with continuous and accurate sampling capabilities for all parameters in the sample and the system. Instantaneous drying rates, heat, and mass transfer coefficients were also deduced for every time step till the paper completely dried. Furthermore, the coefficients obtained were also reported in the form of dimensionless correlations, and the results were compared against traditional correlations used in the modeling of paper drying. A never-dried (ND) fines-free softwood bleached kraft pulp was converted to air-dried and thermally dried handsheets, which were then disintegrated or sonicated in water under various conditions. These disintegrated or sonicated pulps were converted to handsheets and used to obtain fundamental data on paper recycling. The water-vapor-adsorption isotherms of the pulp and sheet samples after super-critical-point drying showed clear differences between the water volumes adsorbed by the ND pulp, once-dried pulp, and dried sheets at the same relative humidities above 50%. These differences are caused by hornification of the pulp and sheet samples during drying and recycling. Air and thermal drying of wet webs decreased the adsorbed-water-vapor volume by 7%–9% and 14%–18%, respectively, relative to that adsorbed by the original ND pulp. We hypothesize that the decrease in water-vapor-adsorption volume from that of the original ND pulp at relative humidities >50% reflects the degree of irreversible formation of hydroxyl groups in the originally hydrophilic hemicelluloses and crystalline cellulose microfibril surfaces in the pulp and sheet samples during drying and paper recycling. The water-vapor-adsorption isotherms of pulp and sheet samples can be used to quantify the degree of hornification or the amount of irreversible hydrogen bonds formed during paper recycling. Simple Summary: The heat-loving paper wasp Polistes dominula builds small nests in sheltered places in quite differing habitats, providing a favorable microclimate for brood development. Their careful choice of the nesting site enables them to keep the nest and brood temperature above the ambient air temperature. In temperate Austrian (Central European) climates, the cooling efforts of the adult wasps keep the mean comb temperature from exceeding approximately 39 °C, which seems to be a threshold for optimal development. Measurement of the nest and the body temperature of the wasps at typical nesting sites revealed a close relationship with the air temperature at the nests but a suboptimal correlation with climate data from a local standard weather station or model-generated macroclimate data. The comparison emphasizes the importance of microclimate measurements if it is to judge the vulnerability of insects to climate change. The paper wasp Polistes dominula is a thermophilic species originating from the Mediterranean climate, but is now widely spread in Europe. They live in quite differing habitats; and as synanthropic species, they have been established in human settlement areas. They build a single small comb at protected places with a favorable microclimate. We measured the temperature of the wasps, the nests and their environment at typical nesting sides in Austria (Europe) in the temperate climate, in order to reveal relationships between nest and body temperature and the habitats' microclimate. The temperatures of the comb and of the wasps' body were in a wide range (~20–37 °C) above the ambient air temperature at the nest. This is an advantage as higher temperatures accelerate the development speed of the brood. However, the mean comb temperature did not exceed approximately 38.6 °C. This was managed by cooling efforts of the adult wasps. The ambient air temperature near the nest (~1–2 cm) was always clearly elevated above the ambient air temperature at a local standard weather station in the habitat. A comparison with climate-model-generated macroclimate data revealed the necessity of measuring microclimate data for a reliable description of the insects' thermal environment. In view of the present situation that the exhaust waste heat of the hot air hood in the paper drying section is too much and the environment is not friendly, a closed heat pump drying system model applied to the exhaust air hood is proposed and established. Effects of evaporation temperature and condensation temperature on supply air temperature, supply air moisture content, system performance coefficient (COP) and dehumidification energy consumption ratio (SMER) were studied. Results show that with the increase of condensation temperature, the supply air temperature is unchanged, and the moisture content of the supply air increase, while the COP and SMER of the system show a downward trend. The moisture content of supply air decrease with the increase of evaporation temperature, while the supply air temperature, COP and SMER all show an upward trend. Therefore, in order to improve the drying characteristics and improve the performance of the heat pump system, the condensation temperature can be reduced and the evaporation temperature can be increased. Background: In this research, the adsorption efficiency of Cellulose (as a raw compound prepared from trash papers) and Cellulose Nanopolystyrene (CNP) as adsorbents for waste water treatment was investigated. Lead and cadmium ions as the pollutants added to aqueous solutions and a synthetic effluent solution was prepared. Methods: The effective factors influencing the adsorption process including the pH of aqueous phase and its ionic strength, the adsorbent dose, the duration of adsorbent, and time dependency have been assessed. The removal efficiency was assessed by determination of studied metal ions using a flame atomic absorption spectrometer before and after removal procedure. Results: It was found that 0.1g of Cellulose as adsorbent removed 96.81%, 50.06% of Pb2+and Cd2+ from 45 mL of synthetic effluent solution at pH =5 after 30 min at 27°C, respectively. Moreover, 0.1g of the CNP removed 96.88%‚ 60.41% of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from similar above-mentioned conditions. The CNP showed better adsorbent characteristics in the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions than the Cellulose. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models successfully demonstrated the experimental observations for removing Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions by CNP as the adsorbent. The Dubinin-Radushkevich DR) and Temkin isotherm models were better adapted than other used models for the adsorption procedure. This paper deals with the study of volatile compounds present in a set of three paper and board (P&B) samples of different composition, surface treatment, grammage and thickness. The volatile compounds released by the packaging material (P&B) can be trapped on the food and may then affect the safety and health of consumers. To evaluate if the recycled P&B could be used as food packaging material, adsorption studies have been performed with a selection of chemical substances. The adsorption isotherms are provided. Partition coefficients between paper and air have been calculated for a series of volatile compounds used as model compounds to represent different families of contaminants commonly present in P&B. Values from 4 to 3243 were obtained at different temperatures. The analysis of volatile compounds have been carried out by automatic headspace coupled on-line with GC/MS in SIM mode. comparison between activated charcoal and heat-treated coal for decolourization of pulp and paper mill waste water was studied. The heat-treated coal was prepared in an inert atmosphere at 800°C. The adsorption dynamics that include batch contact–time study, kinetics along with adsorption isotherms were carried out. The study shows that heat-treated coal is a suitable adsorbent and can be used for the decolourization of pulp and paper mill effluent streams. The maximum removal was achieved at the initial stages of contact, and the overall adsorption was a slow process. However, the equilibrium concentration in the case of both the adsorbents reaches at almost same time. The linear plot of the Lagergren model shows its applicability and first-order kinetics. A mathematical model for through drying of paper at constant pressure drop was developed. The model is based on physical properties; hence, basis weight, pressure drop, drying air temperature, pore size distribution, initial gas fraction, and tortuosity are important input parameters to the model. The model was solved for different combinations of the variables basis weight, drying air temperature, and pressure drop corresponding to industrial conditions and the results were compared with data from bench-scale experiments. The simulations show that the drying rate curve is very sensitive to the air flow rate and that correctly modeling the correlation between pressure drop and air flow rate is the most important factor for a successful model for through drying. The model was tuned by adjusting the parameters initial gas fraction and tortuosity in order to give the best possible fit to experimental data. For a given basis weight and pressure drop, different drying air temperatures resulted in relatively constant values of the fitted parameters. This means that the model can well predict the effects of changes in drying air temperature based on a tuning of the model performed at the same basis weight and pressure drop. However, for a given basis weight, an increase in pressure drop yielded fitted parameters that were somewhat different; i.e., a lower initial gas fraction and a higher tortuosity, a change that increases the resistance to air flow. Coconut jute carbon, a waste by-product, was utilized in the production of activated carbon. The activated carbon was then evaluated for colour removal from pulp and paper mill wastewater. The activation of the coconut jute was evaluated using a fixed bed reactor involving carbonization and activation steps at temperatures of 650°C in the absence of air. The activation results showed that the maximum surface area of the activated coconut jute carbon (ACJC) was 94 m²g-1. Adsorption equilibrium results of the pulp paper mill wastewater on the ACJC showed that a significant amount of colour reduction was achieved when the ACJC dose exceeded 8 to 12gl-1. Batch equilibrium data was used to develop adsorption isotherms for colour removal. Based on those isotherms, the amount of activated coconut jute carbon required to achieve colour removal can be predicted. Adsorption gel was prepared from waste recycled paper by immobilizing iminodiacetic acid (IDA) functional group by chemical modification. The gel exhibited good adsorption behavior for a number of metal ions viz. Cu(II), Pb(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Co(II) at acidic pH. The order of selectivity was found to be as follows: Cu(II)>Pb(II)>Fe(III)>Ni(II)∼Cd(II)∼Co(II). From the adsorption isotherms, the maximum adsorption capacity of the gel for both Cu(II) and Pb(II) was found to be 0.47 mol/kg whereas that for Cd(II) was 0.24 mol/kg. Modeling the pipe failure phenomenon is essential for any water utility. The linear extension of the Yule process (LEYP), proposed in 2009, was intended to be a synthesis of the pipe failure models available at the time. Since then, two major improvements have been proposed. First, in 2012 and 2014, several papers introduced time-dependent factors into the LEYP model. Second, in 2016, the LEYP with Selective Survival (LEYP2s) was proposed to deal with the selective survival bias. The objectives of this paper were (1) from a theoretical point of view, to show how temporal covariates also can be introduced into the LEYP2s model; and (2) from a practical point of view, to prove the feasibility and interest of a LEYP2s model with time-dependent variables, using a case study. The mathematical consequences of taking into account temporal factors within the LEYP2s model are presented, together with the solutions found that allow the calculation of the model likelihood and thus the estimation of the model parameters. These solutions were applied to the black polyethylene service line network of the city of Bordeaux, France. Three time-dependent covariates were considered: air temperature, pressure regime, and type of disinfectant. This case study proved the feasibility of a LEYP2s model with temporal variables. The results showed that the time-dependent factors considered did not improve the ranking of the service lines, but did improve the annual prediction of the network failure rate. In order to understand the application of frost measurement of air source heat pump heat exchanger, a research on frost measurement of air source heat pump heat exchanger based on image recognition processing technology is put forward. In this paper, the scheme design of defrosting control system based on image processing technology is introduced, and the frost degree coefficient of outdoor heat exchanger fin surface is introduced to characterize the frost degree of fin surface. Secondly, the experimental environment room was built, and the conventional defrosting control method of the existing heat pump unit was tested on the spot. It was found that in the air temperature of -6~0 °C and the air relative humidity of 86~92%, the unit appeared the phenomenon of "defrosting in time" and "defrosting without frost". Finally, the change of frost layer on the surface of the outdoor heat exchanger fin during defrosting is analyzed, and the coefficient of frost degree on the surface of the fin is calculated and analyzed. At the beginning of defrosting, due to the large degree of frost, the P-value of the frost degree coefficient on the surface of the fin is close to 1, when the defrosting is carried out for 125 seconds, the P-value of the frost degree coefficient on the surface of the fin decreases sharply to 0.09, when the defrosting is completed, the P-value of the frost degree coefficient on the surface of the outdoor heat exchanger is maintained at about 0.04. The defrosting control method of air source heat pump based on image processing technology is proposed in this paper, and its technical feasibility and effect are verified by experimental tests, which lays a foundation for future popularization and application. There have been fruitful publications on thermal comfort of urban residential buildings in China. However, there is a lack of reviews on this topic to perform a comprehensive analysis and find opportunities to meet occupants' thermal comfort needs while improving building energy efficiencies. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a systematic review on the advancements in research on thermal comfort in urban residential buildings in China. Firstly, two common thermal comfort research approaches, i.e., field studies and laboratory studies, are discussed. Secondly, eleven main thermal comfort evaluation indicators are summarized. Finally, this paper analyzes the thermal comfort survey data from different researchers, discusses the impacts of adaptive behaviors on human thermal comfort, and provides recommendations for future research on urban residential thermal comfort. It was found that people have higher and higher requirements for their indoor thermal environment as time goes by, especially in the winter; the thermoneutral temperature is higher in warmer climate regions in the summer but lower in the winter than in colder climate regions; the thermoneutral temperature tends to increase with the indoor air temperature due to an adaptation to the indoor thermal environment. The outcomes of this paper provide valuable information on thermal comfort behaviors of urban residents in different climate zones in China, which can serve as a resource for the academic community conducting future research on thermal comfort and assist policymakers in enhancing building energy efficiencies without compromising the occupants' comfort. In this paper, we have proposed a nonlinear mathematical model to study the dynamics of atmospheric carbon dioxide $({\rm{CO}}{{\kern 1pt} _{\rm{2}}})$(CO2) and atmospheric temperature due to energy sectors. Energy sector is a major contributor of atmospheric carbon dioxide. We have studied the effects of energy consumption and human population on ${\rm{CO}}{{\kern 1pt} _{\rm{2}}}$CO2 level and temperature. Burning of fossil fuels results in an increase of ${\rm{CO}}{{\kern 1pt} _{\rm{2}}}$CO2 level and temperature. To curb the ${\rm{CO}}{{\kern 1pt} _{\rm{2}}}$CO2 level and temperature, efficient mitigation options are required. Mitigation options, which reduce emission rate of ${\rm{CO}}{{\kern 1pt} _{\rm{2}}}$CO2, energy consumption rate and rate of increase in temperature, are considered in this model. By taking the efficiencies of mitigation options as control variables, the optimality system is derived. Numerical simulations are carried out to validate our analytical findings. The optimal profiles of control variables are plotted for different values of emission rate of ${\rm{CO}}{{\kern 1pt} _{\rm{2}}}$CO2, energy consumption rate and rate of increase in temperature. Maximum efficiencies of mitigation options are also plotted against to reduce emission rate of ${\rm{CO}}{{\kern 1pt} _{\rm{2}}}$CO2, energy consumption rate and rate of increase in temperature. This paper discusses the radiation budget and its temporal variability over Poland. The data analysis is based on the MERRA-2 reanalysis for the years 1980–2020. During the last four decades, the enhancement of climate warming has been observed, which coincides with the changes in the radiation budget. Positive and statistically significant trends at the top of the atmosphere (TOA; 0.7 ± 0.2 W/m2/10 year) and on the Earth's surface (1.5 ± 0.2 W/m2/10 year) radiation budget (net downward flux) are mainly a consequence of changes in the amount of aerosol and greenhouse gases (GHG). According to MERRA-2, the AOD during this period decreased by − 0.19 (at 550 nm), which is 87% of the long-term (1980–2021) mean value (0.22). The reduction of AOD is due mainly to the decline of non-absorbing sulfate particles, which leads to a reduction of single-scattering albedo (SSA) by − 0.008 per decade and Angstrom exponent (AE) by − 0.06 per decade (both trends statistically significant). On the other hand, the GHG concentration increased by 4.9%/10 year and 3%/10 year, respectively, for CO2 and CH4. The total column of water vapor increased (1.3%/10 year), while ozone decreased (− 1%/10 year). Despite the fact that cloud cover and cloud optical depth (COD) decreased (− 1.8%/10 year and − 1.0%/10 year), the impact of cloud on temporal variability radiation budget is small. It can be explained by nearly compensated shortwave (SW) cooling and longwave (LW) heating effects. During the analysis period, near-surface air temperature increased by 2.0 °C. The estimated increase in SW net surface radiation (7.9 W/m2) leads to climate warming by 0.8 °C, which is a consequence mainly of the reduction of aerosol (0.4 °C) and cloud cover (0.2 °C). The impact of the change of SW radiation on air temperature is more pronounced during the warm season, while during the cold, air temperature change is controlled mainly by the variability of air mass advection. The ocean-surface downward longwave radiation (Rl) is one of the most fundamental components of the radiative energy balance, and it has a remarkable influence on air–sea interactions. Because of various shortcomings and limits, a lot of empirical models were established for ocean-surface Rl estimation for practical applications. In this paper, based on comprehensive measurements collected from 65 moored buoys distributed across global seas from 1988 to 2019, a new model for estimating the all-sky ocean-surface Rl at both hourly and daily scales was built. The ocean-surface Rl was formulated as a nonlinear function of the screen-level air temperature, relative humidity, cloud fraction, total column cloud liquid, and ice water. A comprehensive evaluation of this new model relative to eight existing models was conducted under clear-sky and all-sky conditions at daytime/nighttime hourly and daily scales. The validation results showed that the accuracy of the newly constructed model is superior to other models, yielding overall RMSE values of 14.82 and 10.76 W/m2 under clear-sky conditions, and 15.95 and 10.27 W/m2 under all-sky conditions, at hourly and daily scales, respectively. Our analysis indicates that the effects of the total column cloud liquid and ice water on the ocean-surface Rl also need to be considered besides cloud cover. This paper presents an analysis of the relationships between soil moisture, cloud cover, solar radiation, air temperature and humidity, and precipitation during the warm half of the year in East‐Central Europe over the years 1971–2020. The temporal and spatial variability of these meteorological elements is presented in association with the occurrence of anticyclonic blocking events over the study area. It demonstrates that changes in soil moisture in East‐Central Europe point to the combined influence of many meteorological factors resulting from the atmospheric circulation, and are an indicator of the comprehensive relationships among those factors. The main factors affecting soil water content are precipitation and evapotranspiration, which in turn depend on air humidity, cloudiness, intensity of solar radiation and air temperature. The increase in the frequency and duration of sequences of days with blocking events in East‐Central Europe has contributed to an increased probability of longer periods with soil moisture negative anomalies. Frost on agricultural products in spring imposes heavy financial losses to agriculture particularly in northwest of Iran's orchards. Frost early warning is an effective way in preventing frost risk in apple orchards. This paper aims to validate frost early warning system in apple orchards of northwestern Iran by predicting flowering date of apple tree and its combination with WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model simulations of the 2-m temperature. To this end, stepwise multiple linear regression model was used for predicting flowering date; therefore thermal variables data including mean temperature, mean maximum temperature, mean minimum temperature, last frost date, heat wave duration, heat wave intensity, GDD and maximum standard temperature data larger than 1 (Z > 1) for the period of 2007–2016 (from March 1st until flowering date) in Kahriz agrometeorological station in northwest of Iran were calculated and added to the model. Also, to evaluate the accuracy of WRF model simulations, the 72-h simulations of the 2-m air temperature for internal computational grid in northwestern Iran (West Azerbaijan Province) in 17 synoptic stations were compared to minimum air temperature observed in the stations. Results revealed that the proposed stepwise regression method is a relatively precise model with a mean absolute error of 2.7 days between the predicted and observed flowering dates. Agricultural sustainability is dependent on the ability to predict crop yield, which is vital for farmers, consumers, and researchers. Most of the works used the amount of rainfall, average monthly temperature, relative humidity, etc. as inputs. In this paper, an attempt was made to predict the yield of the citrus crop (Washington Navel orange, Valencia orange, Murcott mandarin, Fremont mandarin, and Bearss Seedless lime) using weather factors and the accumulated heat units. These variables were used as input parameters in an artificial neural network (ANN) model. The necessary information was gathered during the growing seasons between 2010/2011 and 2021/2022 under Egyptian conditions. Weather factors were daily precipitation, yearly average air temperature, and yearly average of air relative humidity. A base air temperature of 13.0 °C was used to determine the accumulated heat units. The heat use efficiency (HUE) for cultivars was determined. The Bearss Seedless lime had the lowest HUE of 9.5 kg/ha °C day, while the Washington Navel orange had the highest HUE of 20.2 kg/ha °C day. The predictive performance of the ANN model with a structure of 9-20-1 with the backpropagation was evaluated using standard statistical measures. The actual and estimated yields from the ANN model were compared using a testing dataset, resulting in a value of RMSE, MAE, and MAPE of 2.80 t/ha, 2.58 t/ha, and 5.41%, respectively. The performance of the ANN model in the training phase was compared to multiple linear regression (MLR) models using values of R2; for MLR models for all cultivars, R2 ranged between 0.151 and 0.844, while the R2 value for the ANN was 0.87. Moreover, the ANN model gave the best performance criteria for evaluation of citrus yield prediction with a high R2, low root mean squared error, and low mean absolute error compared to the performance criteria of data mining algorithms such as K-nearest neighbor (KNN), KStar, and support vector regression. These encouraging outcomes show how the current ANN model can be used to estimate fruit yields, including citrus fruits and other types of fruit. The novelty of the proposed ANN model lies in the combination of weather parameters and accumulated heat units for accurate citrus yield prediction, specifically tailored for Egyptian regional citrus crops. Furthermore, especially in low- to middle-income countries such as Egypt, the findings of this study can greatly enhance the reliance on statistics when making decisions regarding agriculture and climate change. The citrus industry can benefit greatly from these discoveries, which can help with optimization, harvest planning, and postharvest logistics. The commonly used reference atmospheric profiles for the validation of retrieved atmospheric profiles for microwave sounders have bias compared with real atmospheric profile values, which is detrimental to the validation of the retrieval. Microwave sounder observations are the direct measurements of microwave radiation in atmospheric conditions and are a true representation of the status of the atmosphere. This paper proposed a validation method for the retrieved atmospheric temperature and atmospheric humidity profiles of the satellite-based microwave sounder using its own in-orbit observations. The validation experiments are performed both for the retrievals of the microwave temperature sounder-II (Xi'an Branch, China Academy of Space Technology, Xi'an, China. MWTS-II) and the microwave humidity and temperature sounder (National Space Science Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. MWHTS). The validation results show that the retrieved temperature profiles of MWTS-II have higher accuracy compared to the temperature profiles of ERA5 in the atmospheric pressure range of 3–30 hPa, and the accuracy of the rest of the pressure range is comparable between the profiles of ERA5 and the retrieved profiles. And the retrieved temperature profiles of MWHTS have higher accuracy compared to the temperature profiles of ERA5 in the atmospheric pressure level around 50 hPa and lower accuracy in the rest of the pressure levels. In addition, the retrieved humidity profiles of MWHTS have higher accuracy compared to the humidity profiles of ERA5 in the atmospheric pressure range of 350–925 hPa. The proposed validation method for the retrieved atmospheric temperature and atmospheric humidity profiles of MWHTS using its own observations is promising for improving the feasibility and reliability of the validation, and can be a good reference for the application of the satellite in-orbit observations and the optimization of the microwave sounders. Achieving simultaneous control over temperature and humidity through a single direct expansion air conditioner would be advantageous, especially considering its widespread use in residential buildings. Traditional control strategies fail to achieve satisfactory control performance due to the nature of complexity and cross-decoupling of the system. Therefore, this research paper presents the advancement of a feedforward decoupling control scheme designed for a direct expansion air conditioning unit to effectively control both temperature and humidity. To facilitate the controller design, a dynamic model considering both sensible and latent heat transfers was developed and verified. The thermal responses of the coupled system were analyzed and their correlation coefficients also examined. Through identifying the transfer function model of the coupled system, a feedforward decoupling controller with two compensators was designed. The proposed decoupling control scheme was tested using the developed model as the plant to be controlled. Test results showed that, in comparison to the transitional PID based dual single-input and single-output controller, the proposed decoupling control scheme was capable of eliminating the interactions between indoor air temperature and humidity under variable speed operation, and realizing the simultaneous control over indoor air temperature and humidity with a desirable control performance. Temperature and wind observations from aircraft are regarded of major importance for aviation meteorology and numerical weather prediction (NWP). The European Meteorological Aircraft Derived Data Center (EMADDC) system processes aircraft surveillance data received from air traffic control (ATC) and converts it into observations of wind and temperature. Only so-called Mode-S Enhanced Surveillance data can be used, because this data contains the air vector and ground vector of the aircraft, from which a wind vector can be inferred. To acquire high quality observations, the data is processed in three steps: pre-processing, processing, and post-processing. The pre-processing is needed to obtain high-quality information and to calculate several correction values such as temperature corrections and heading corrections. Processing converts the aircraft data into meteorological information and finally post-processing guarantees that only high-quality information is made available. The quality of the observations produced is verified by comparing these observation to other upper air wind and temperature observations from radiosondes and comparing them with NWP data. In this paper, experimental work has been presented to study the novel design of a solar crop dryer that includes an inverted absorber perforate type collector with forced airflow. A novel design configuration was constructed and tested in the eastern Algeria climate (El Oued city) for drying potatoes. We aimed to present a test of the thermal performance of the novel dryer and use only clean energy sources for evaluating the drying efficiency. Under real climatic conditions, the experimental test indicated that the average air temperature of the drying chamber is 50 °C, and the time required for drying potatoes starting at the initial moisture content (MC) of 84.17% until the final MC of 12.5% is 6h. The highest specific moisture extraction rate value was obtained as 1.074 g water/kWh. The drying efficiencies ranged from 20.37% to 34.01%, whereas the exergy efficiency ranged from 58.48% to 93.22%. The payback period was estimated as 1.39 years. The proposed novel dryer will dry potatoes free of cost for almost its entire life period, and about $13.92 can be saved. Compared with electric oven drying, the novel one has the following advantages: the cost of electricity saving and avoiding penalty tax for CO2 emission were $11.69 and $2.235, respectively. Cooling systems provide a safe thermal environment for the reliable operation of IT equipment in data centers (DCs) while generating significant energy consumption. Therefore, to achieve energy savings in cooling system control under dynamic thermal distribution in DCs, this paper proposes a multi-setpoint cooling control approach based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Firstly, a thermal model based on the XGBoost algorithm is constructed to precisely evaluate the thermal distribution in the rack room to guide real-time cooling control. Secondly, a multi-set point cooling control approach based on the deep Q-network algorithm (DQN-MSP) is designed to finely regulate the supply air temperature of each air conditioner by capturing the thermal fluctuations to ensure the dynamic balance of cooling supply and demand. Finally, we adopt the extended CloudSimPy simulation tool and the real workload trace of the PlanetLab system to evaluate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed approach. The simulation results show that the proposed control solution effectively reduces the cooling energy consumption by over 2.4% by raising the average air supply temperature of the air conditioner while satisfying the thermal constraints. This paper compares the performance of a vertical-finned microchannel heat exchanger (VMHX) and a 2-row fin-tube heat exchanger (FTHX) under wet and frosting conditions. The VMHX features vertically oriented fins with an extension at the windward side and parallel microchannel tubes, allowing for efficient water drainage and better performance than conventional microchannel heat exchangers with parallel serpentine fins. However, the performance of the VMHX has not been sufficiently compared to that of FTHX. After conducting experiments under specific operating conditions, the VMHX exhibits better water drainage performance than the FTHX at higher inlet air velocities, higher maximum heat flow, and time-integrating heat flow under certain operating conditions. Although the heating time is relatively shorter than the 2-row FTHX, these results suggest that the VMHX may be a more suitable option for applications requiring efficient water drainage and heat transfer. Additionally, the operating conditions significantly affect the heat exchanger's performance. The performance of VMHX is analyzed under different inlet air velocities, inlet air temperatures, and evaporation temperatures. The results indicate that frost itself had no effect on the heat exchanger performance and that the decrease of the inlet air flow rate was the main factor that decreased the heat exchanger performance. Overall, the results of this study provide valuable insights into the performance of VMHX and FTHX under wet and frosting conditions and the impact of various operating parameters on VMHX performance. Ultrafast high-temperature heating methods based on the Joule heating of carbon heaters can dramatically shorten the time required for material synthesis/sintering. However, commonly used porous carbon heaters cannot provide stable high temperatures in air, limiting their applicability to the processing of atmosphere-sensitive materials. In this study, we present a novel configuration for ultrafast high-temperature heating in air using commercial graphite paper. This configuration enables stable high temperatures of ~1330–2230 °C in air, on the time-scale of minutes, and ultrafast heating rates, reaching ~104 oC/min. We describe the mechanism behind the excellent performance of our proposed configuration, and further demonstrate its flexibility and controllability by considering ultrafast high-temperature sintering of ZnO ceramics with tunable microstructures using different heating profiles. Our configuration provides a complementary approach to simplifying the ultrafast high-temperature heating process, reducing costs, and meeting the requirements of synthesis/sintering in air. This paper describes the metrological procedure carried out for the evaluation of the building influence on air temperature measurements. This evaluation aims to produce reliable conclusions, information, and data to contribute to the WMO siting classification schemes for air temperature measurements. For this purpose, a field experiment was designed, deployed, and carried out. As a result, one-year-lasting air temperature measurements were collected and analyzed. In this field experiment, a 200 m wide building is the unique artificial heat source and the unique object projecting shades over a flat surface (no discernible slope) in an open space bigger than 40,000 m2, covered with short grass. Eight calibrated thermometers, equipped with the same model of artificially ventilated radiation shields, were set up at a height of 1.5 m from the ground and at different distances from a 200 m wide building. This configuration provides the observation of the horizontal air temperature radially distributed from the building and, as a conclusion, it enables the quantification of the building influences on air temperature measurements at different distances from the building. This document describes the field experiment, the analysis procedure, the evolution of the building influence on air temperature measurements along the day, and the impact of other meteorological parameters on this building effect. Two different building effects are observed: the positive building effect, where the air temperature decreases with the distance to the building, and the negative building effect, where the air temperature increases with the distance to the building. It is also noticed that the building influence is higher on clear days and the daily maximum building influence values are directly linked with the corresponding maximum solar irradiance. The influence of wind on the building effect is also analyzed, reaching the conclusion that due to characteristic of local winds, in terms of low speed and direction, the wind impact could be considered as negligible. The maximum values of building influence on air temperature measurements, the associated uncertainty analysis, and the conclusions are presented in this paper. Anthropogenic climate change is changing the Earth system processes that control the characteristics of natural hazards both globally and across Australia. Model projections of hazards under future climate change are necessary for effective adaptation. This paper presents BARPA-R (the Bureau of Meteorology Atmospheric Regional Projections for Australia), a regional climate model designed to downscale climate projections over the Australasian region with the purpose of investigating future hazards. BARPA-R, a limited-area model, has a 17 km horizontal grid spacing and makes use of the Met Office Unified Model (MetUM) atmospheric model and the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) land surface model. To establish credibility and in compliance with the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) experiment design, the BARPA-R framework has been used to downscale ERA5 reanalysis. Here, an assessment of this evaluation experiment is provided. Performance-based evaluation results are benchmarked against ERA5, with comparable performance between the free-running BARPA-R simulations and observationally constrained reanalysis interpreted as a good result. First, an examination of BARPA-R's representation of Australia's surface air temperature, precipitation, and 10 m winds finds good performance overall, with biases including a 1 ∘ C cold bias in daily maximum temperatures, reduced diurnal temperature range, and wet biases up to 25 mm per month in inland Australia. Recent trends in daily maximum temperatures are consistent with observational products, while trends in minimum temperatures show overestimated warming and trends in precipitation show underestimated wetting in northern Australia. Precipitation and temperature teleconnections are effectively represented in BARPA-R when present in the driving boundary conditions, while 10 m winds are improved over ERA5 in six out of eight of the Australian regions considered. Secondly, the paper considers the representation of large-scale atmospheric circulation features and weather systems. While generally well represented, convection-related features such as tropical cyclones, the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ), the Northwest Cloudband, and the monsoon westerlies show more divergence from observations and internal interannual variability than mid-latitude phenomena such as the westerly jets and extratropical cyclones. Atmospheric extreme events cause severe damage to human societies and ecosystems. The frequency and intensity of extremes and other associated events are continuously increasing due to climate change and global warming. The accurate prediction, characterization, and attribution of atmospheric extreme events is, therefore, a key research field in which many groups are currently working by applying different methodologies and computational tools. Machine learning and deep learning methods have arisen in the last years as powerful techniques to tackle many of the problems related to atmospheric extreme events. This paper reviews machine learning and deep learning approaches applied to the analysis, characterization, prediction, and attribution of the most important atmospheric extremes. A summary of the most used machine learning and deep learning techniques in this area, and a comprehensive critical review of literature related to ML in EEs, are provided. The critical literature review has been extended to extreme events related to rainfall and floods, heatwaves and extreme temperatures, droughts, severe weather events and fog, and low-visibility episodes. A case study focused on the analysis of extreme atmospheric temperature prediction with ML and DL techniques is also presented in the paper. The environmental temperature and humidity are crucial factors for the normal growth and development of arbor tree cuttings by altering their hormone levels and influencing their physiological activities. Developing a temperature and humidity environmental model for arbor tree cuttings serves as a key technique to improve the adjustment performance of environmental parameters in facility agriculture systems and enhance the rooting rate of cuttings. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of current research on the inherent characteristics of cuttings and the factors influencing environmental temperature and humidity. It explores the mechanisms of interaction between the inherent characteristics of cuttings and the factors influencing environmental temperature and humidity. This paper investigates the interactive relationships among the factors affecting environmental temperature and humidity. It analyzes methods to improve the efficiency of constructing temperature and humidity environmental models for arbor tree cuttings. To enhance the transferability of the environmental model, the necessary physiological activities under the influence of plant hormones are generalized as common physiological traits in the growth and development of cuttings. In addition, this paper explores the factors influencing the air and substrate temperature and the humidity in facility agriculture systems as well as two types of facilities for controlling environmental temperature and humidity. Furthermore, it reviews the research progress in environmental models from both mechanistic and data-driven perspectives. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the characteristics associated with these two model categories. Building upon this, the paper summarizes and discusses methods employed in constructing temperature and humidity environmental models for arbor tree cuttings. In addition, it also anticipates the application of deep learning techniques in the construction of temperature and humidity environmental models for arbor cuttings, including utilizing machine vision technology to monitor their growth status. Finally, it proposes suggestions for building physiological models of fruit tree-like arbor cuttings at different growth stages. To enhance the transferability of environmental models, the integration of physiological models of cuttings, environmental models, and control system performance are suggested to create an environmental identification model. Non-professional weather stations are often omitted from the networks of standard/professional stations at various spatial scales. Nevertheless, there are many tasks when such non-professional datasets can serve as the only or the most relevant available source respectively. Its acquisition costs, sufficient quality and capacity together with its moveability represent properties that should be taken into consideration when planning operational usage of various meteorological data. In this paper, we focus on the datasets of air temperatures and relative humidities measured both with professional and nonprofessional devices at nearly the same location. Four years of almost continual measurements (2016-2019) ensure robust sample of mutual comparison, which we analyze in the paper more in detail in order to assess the potential of non-professional datasets for utilization in aviation meteorology. In this paper, we discuss a better method to measure the paper water content of transformers using cellulose isotherms. The advantage of the new method is that the transformer oil and cellulosic insulation do not need to be in thermodynamic equilibrium. Instead, the temperature needs to be cycling in order to determine when the direction of water migration, whether out of or into the oil changes. The reversal in water migration can be used to determine the vapor pressure of the water adsorbed by the cellulose. This method was tested using 12 different conditions similar to those within a normally operating transformer. The results showed close agreement when this method is used. Adsorption isotherms of 3 selected paper-based packaging materials, that is, vegetable parchment (VP) paper, Kraft paper, and solid-bleached-sulfate (SBS) paperboard, were determined at 3 different temperatures (25, 40, and 50 °C). The GAB isotherm model was found to fit adequately for describing experimental adsorption isotherm data for the paper samples. The monolayer moisture content of the paper samples decreased with increase in temperature, which is in the range of 0.0345 to 0.0246, 0.0301 to 0.0238, and 0.0318 to 0.0243 g water/g solid for the MG paper, the Kraft paper, and the SBS paperboard, respectively. The net isosteric heats of sorption ( qst) for the paper samples decreased exponentially with increase in moisture content after reaching the maximum values of 18.51, 27.39, and 26.80 kJ/mol for the VP paper, the Kraft paper, and the SBS paperboard, respectively, at low-moisture content. The differential enthalpy and entropy of 3 paper samples showed compensation phenomenon with the isokinetic temperature of 399.7 K indicating that water vapor had been adsorbed onto the paper samples with the same mechanism. The morphological complexity of urban environments results in a high spatial and temporal variability of the urban microclimate. The consequent demand for high-resolution atmospheric data remains a challenge for atmospheric research and operational application. The recent widespread availability and increasing adoption of low-cost mobile sensing offer the opportunity to integrate observations from conventional monitoring networks with microclimatic and air pollution data at a finer spatial and temporal scale. So far, the relatively low quality of the measurements and outdoor performance compared to conventional instrumentation has discouraged the full deployment of mobile sensors for routine monitoring. The present study addresses the performance of a commercial mobile sensor, the MeteoTracker (IoTopon Srl), recently launched on the market to quantify the microclimatic characteristics of the outdoor environment. The sensor follows the philosophy of the Internet of Things technology, being low cost, having an automatic data flow via personal smartphones and online data sharing, supporting user-friendly software, and having the potential to be deployed in large quantities. In this paper, the outdoor performance is evaluated through tests aimed at quantifying (i) the intra-sensor variability under similar atmospheric conditions and (ii) the outdoor accuracy compared to a reference weather station under sub-optimal (in a fixed location) and optimal (mobile) sensor usage. Data-driven corrections are developed and successfully applied to improve the MeteoTracker data quality. In particular, a recursive method for the simultaneous improvement of relative humidity, dew point, and humidex index proves to be crucial for increasing the data quality. The results mark an intra-sensor variability of approximately ± 0.5 °C for air temperature and ± 1.2 % for the corrected relative humidity, both of which are within the declared sensor accuracy. The sensor captures the same atmospheric variability as the reference sensor during both fixed and mobile tests, showing positive biases (overestimation) for both variables. Through the mobile test, the outdoor accuracy is observed to be between ± 0.3 to ± 0.5 °C for air temperature and between ± 3 % and ± 5 % for the relative humidity, ranking the MeteoTracker in the real accuracy range of similar commercial sensors from the literature and making it a valid solution for atmospheric monitoring. Direct air-cooled condensers in power plants rely on heat transfer with the atmospheric environment to discharge thermal energy. The heat transfer process becomes complicated in practical operations when ambient wind is involved. To examine the impact of wind on the heat transfer performance of direct air-cooled condensers, this paper took into consideration three different wind directions, namely, headwind, crosswind and tailwind, as well as four different speeds (3 m/s, 6 m/s, 9 m/s, and 12 m/s), and numerically investigated their influences on the thermal performance of a 600 MW direct air-cooled power unit. The variation in ventilation rates and inlet air temperatures among the cells under the influence of ambient winds are also studied. Simulation results indicated that ambient winds induced thermal air re-circulation and air backflow phenomena in the air-cooled island. The cells located on the windward side were significantly affected in all three wind direction conditions. The ventilation rates and inlet air temperatures among the cells were not uniform, showing an overall increasing trend. In particular, negative pressure zones were generated under tailwind conditions, severely impacting air-flow rates at the fan inlet, and inlet air temperatures of cells. This paper presents a method for determining the impact of dam reservoirs on the ice cover of rivers downstream of their locations based on a long measurement period (1950–2020) and synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) data. Two rivers and two sets of dam reservoirs located in the Carpathian Mountains (central Europe) were selected for this study. In order to estimate the influence of reservoirs, a logistic regression model was built to describe the relationship between the course of air temperature and the occurrence of ice cover (i.e., total ice cover and border ice) at water gauge cross sections upstream and downstream of the reservoirs. The influence of reservoirs was then defined as the differences between the number of days with ice cover predicted from air temperature and those observed at the water gauge cross sections. Additionally, the extent of the impact of the reservoirs was estimated based on SAR data (Sentinel-1) by identifying river sections downstream of the reservoirs on which total ice cover did not form despite the persistence of very low air temperatures. The study shows that dam reservoirs play an important role in decreasing the incidence of ice cover on rivers. The occurrence of ice cover as a result of reservoir operations could decrease by over 80 % in the sections immediately downstream of the reservoirs. The impact of the reservoir on river ice cover diminishes as the distance from the reservoir increases. Using SAR data, it was estimated that total ice cover did not form in sections 26–60 km downstream of the reservoirs, despite the presence of favorable thermal conditions. Based on the results of the study presented here, it can be assumed that in areas where many dam reservoirs are located, the ice regime of rivers is significantly transformed, which should be taken into account when studying river ice cover. This study addresses a crucial gap in understanding the impact of urban morphologies on the canopy urban heat islands (CUHI) effect. The selection of reference stations lacks a unified standard, and their surface air temperature (SAT) sequences are also inevitably influenced by urbanization. However, synchronous observational data from relocated meteorological stations could provide high-quality sample data for studying CUHI. Utilizing remote sensing techniques, the findings of this paper revealed that the observation environment of stations after relocation exhibited remarkable representativeness, with their observation sequences accurately reflecting the local climatic background. The differences in synchronized observation sequences could characterize the CUHI intensity (CUHII). Among the various factors, land use parameters and landscape parameters played particularly significant roles. Furthermore, the fitting performance of the random forest (RF) model for both training and testing data was significantly superior to that of the linear model and support vector regression (SVR) model. Additionally, the influence of local circulation on CUHI could not be overlooked. Drought is a natural phenomenon that occurred in Central Europe in the past, but it is becoming a more serious problem due to the changes in its occurrence and intensity related to climate change. The main aim of this paper was to determine changes in air temperature and precipitation amounts in Slovakia from 1931 to 2020 and to identify changes in drought occurrence and intensity using the Standardised Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Cluster analysis was used to determine regions with similar drought occurrences. For each of the identified five clusters, drought characteristics were determined and compared between two reference periods 1961–1990 and 1991–2020. While a decrease in the number of months with SPEI-1 below − 1 was observed in autumn, spring and summer months showed a drying tendency. Overall, we can say that we observed a shift in drought occurrence from autumn and winter months to spring and summer months. This is an important finding for the agriculture or forestry because it affects work management and planning. The clearest tendency in drought events was observed in the western part of Slovakia covering areas with agriculturally intensive land use. Besides prolonging drought events, there was also a higher accumulated deficit for each event. The increase in drought intensity was not spatially consistent over the cluster area, mostly reaching a slight decline of about − 0.1 to − 0.3, which means slight intensification of drought periods in 1991–2020. We evaluated the performance of the Thornthwaite (ThW) method using two gridded climate datasets to estimate monthly average daily potential evapotranspiration (PET). The PET estimated from two gridded series were compared to PET and to reference evapotranspiration (ETo) determined, respectively, through the ThW and Penman-Monteith model parameterized on Food and Agriculture Organization–Irrigation and Drainage paper No 56 (PM-FAO56) using data from weather stations. The PET by ThM was based on monthly air temperature series (1961–2010) from two gridded datasets (Global Historical Climatology Network-GHCN and University of Delaware-UDel) and 21 weather stations of the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) located in Southeastern Brazil. The ETo PM-FAO56 used monthly climate series (1961–2010) on sunshine duration, air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed from weather stations of the INMET. The PET estimated using UDel gridded series was better overall performance than the GHCN series. Differences in altitude, latitude, and longitude were the main geographic factors determining the performance of the PET estimates using gridded climate series. Depending on the factors, some locations require bias correction, especially locations more than 10 km away from the grid point. A remarkable large-amplitude density modulation has been observed in ozone-mixed oxygen gas at atmospheric density and temperature conditions following irradiation with a nanosecond pulse of ultraviolet laser radiation. This paper outlines the experimental findings and describes a hydrodynamic simulation that reproduces several quantitative aspects of this phenomenon. It is important to note that these density waves are not simple sound waves; instead, they are combined with another type of density modulation wave. To adapt to Earth's rapidly changing climate, detailed modelling of thermal stress is needed. Dangerous stress levels are becoming more frequent, longer, and more severe. While traditional measurements of thermal stress have focused on air temperature and humidity, modern measures including radiation and wind speed are becoming widespread. However, projecting such indices has presented a challenging problem, due to the need for appropriate bias correction of multiple variables that vary on hourly timescales. In this paper, we aim to provide a detailed understanding of changing thermal stress patterns incorporating modern measurements, bias correction techniques, and hourly projections to assess the impact of climate change on thermal stress at human scales. To achieve these aims, we conduct a case study of projected thermal stress in central Hobart, Australia for 2040–2059, compared to the historical period 1990–2005. We present the first hourly metre-scale projections of thermal stress driven by multivariate bias-corrected data. We bias correct four variables from six dynamically downscaled General Circulation Models. These outputs drive the Solar and LongWave Environmental Irradiance Geometry model at metre scale, calculating mean radiant temperature and the Universal Thermal Climate Index. We demonstrate that multivariate bias correction can correct means on multiple time scales while accurately preserving mean seasonal trends. Changes in mean air temperature and UTCI by hour of the day and month of the year reveal diurnal and annual patterns in both temporal trends and model agreement. We present plots of future median stress values in the context of historical percentiles, revealing trends and patterns not evident in mean data. Our modelling illustrates a future Hobart that experiences higher and more consistent numbers of hours of heat stress arriving earlier in the year and extending further throughout the day.
