Loess Plateau has great uncertainty on drought occurrence due to climate change. This paper analyzes the evolution of precipitation, potential evapotranspiration and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) based on the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) data and regional downscaling model (RegCM4.0). Results indicate that, under RCP2.6 Scenario, the precipitation will increase significantly (5% confidence level) at the rate of 16.40 mm/10 a. However, the potential evapotranspiration is showing non-significant decreasing trend at the rate of 2.16 mm/10 a. Moreover, the SPEI will decrease in the south and northernmost area and increase in the central northern area of Loess Plateau. Under RCP8.5 Scenario, the precipitation will increase significantly (5% confidence level) at the rate of 19.12 mm/10 a. The potential evapotranspiration will non-significantly decrease at the rate of 2.16 mm/10 a and the SPEI is showing increasing trend almost in the whole Loess Plateau. Generally, Loess Plateau is becoming wetter in the central part under RCP2.6 Scenario and the wet area will be enlarged to almost the whole plateau under RCP8.5 Scenario. Based on compilation of a large number of archaeological and palaeosol 14C-ages, the Summed Probability Method is used to reconstruct population history and climatic patterns on the Chinese Loess Plateau during the period 8.5–3.5 cal. ka BP. During this period, the population experienced two major expansion periods and several climatic fluctuations. The first population expansion began at around 7.8 cal. ka BP, and the second at around 5.8 cal. ka BP. During the first period, although already in combination with cultivation of broomcorn millet the population growth was supported mainly by hunting and gathering. With the switch from broomcorn millet to foxtail millet, plant cultivation became the major factor promoting a second population increase. In this paper, we demonstrate that, initially, suitable climate and agriculture both can facilitate population growth and climate events had a significant influence on demographic fluctuations. Abstract: The present and future spatiotemporal characteristics of reference evapotranspiration (ET0) are examined in this paper. ET0 during 1961–2009 are calculated by the Penman–Monteith method recommended by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) with historical weather data while ET0 during 2011–2099 are downscaled from HadCM3 (Hadley Centre Coupled Model, version 3) outputs under two emission scenarios (A2 and B2) by SDSM (Statistical DownScaling Model). The spatial distribution and temporal trend in ET0 are interpreted by Inverse Distance Weighted Interpolation and Mann–Kendall method, respectively. Results show that the annual mean ET0 is 1060.3mm, the lowest and highest values are found in the southwest and northwest region due to the spatial distribution of climatic factors, respectively. ET0 has increased significantly due to the downward trend in relative humidity and upward trend in temperature on the Loess Plateau during 1961–2009. HadCM3 projects a continuous increase in ET0 in the 21st century and the upward trend will be more pronounced after 2050. Averaged over the two emission scenarios for the whole area, the projected increase are 4%, 7% and 12% for the three periods 2011–2040, 2041–2070 and 2071–2099, respectively; the increase under A2 scenario are slightly greater than those under B2 scenario. An obvious gradient is detected for the projected increase in ET0 from northeast to southwest region in the 21st century. The increase in ET0 will possibly influence the water resource on the Loess in the 21st century and some countermeasures should be taken to reduce the adverse impacts. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The nitrogen isotope of soil is of emerging significance as an indicator of climatic change and blogeochemical cycle of nitrogen in nature systems. In this paper, the nitrogen content and isotopic composition of modern ecosystems from arid and semiarid Loess Plateau in northwestern China, including plant roots and surface soil, were determined to investigate trends in δ15N variation of plant roots and soil along a precipitation and temperature gradient in northwestern China under the East Asian Monsoon climate condition. The δ15N values of surface soil from the study area vary from -1.2‰ to 5.8‰, but from -5.1‰ to 1.9‰ in the plant roots. Our results indicate that (1) although the isotopic compositions of both plant roots and surface soil change with a similar trend along the climate gradient, the apparent nitrogen difference between plant roots and soil existed, with Δδ15N values ranging from 0.3‰ to 7.2‰ with average of 4.1‰ and (2) mean annual precipitation (MAP) is the dominant factor for isotopic composition of plant-soil nitrogen in the Loess Plateau, and the δ15N values are less correlated with MAT; we suggest that nitrogen isotopic composition of soil is a potential tracer for environmental changes. This paper reviews recently published literature, most of which was published in Chinese, and searches for regional patterns of Holocene changes useful in depicting global patterns. The Holocene in the Xinjiang region can be divided into three stages: a warming and dry early stage (from 11 ∼ 10 to 8 ∼ 7 ka BP), a warm and wet middle stage (from 8 ∼ 7 to 4.5 ∼ 3 ka BP) and a fluctuating cool and dry late stage (since 4.5 ∼ 3 ka BP). The Holocene in the northern Tibetan Plateau can also be divided into three stages: a warming and wet stage (from 10.5 ∼ 10 to 5 ∼ 4 ka BP), followed by a variable drying and probably warm stage (5 ∼ 4 to 3 ka BP) and ending with a cool and dry stage (since 3 ka BP). In the Inner Mongolian Plateau, the early Holocene (from 10.5 ∼ 9.5 to 8 ∼ 7.5 ka BP) was warming and dry, and a warm and wet climate occurred from 7.5 to 3.5, during which the best time was 6.3–3.8 ka BP; the climate has been variably drying and probably cooling since 3.5 ka BP. In the northwestern part of the Loess Plateau, several Holocene palaeosols have been identified (10–9, 7.5–5, 4–3 and 2.7–2 ka BP) with the 7.5–5 ka BP palaeosol being most strongly expressed. The best-developed palaeosol-equivalent in major valleys is a swamp-wetland facies deposited between 8885 and 3805 14C yr BP under an extremely wet regime. The climate has fluctuated significantly at least three times around a dry and probably cool regime after the swamp-wetland facies-depositional period. Our summary shows that the Holocene Climatic Optimum occurred nearly contemporaneously (8–5 ka BP) at all sites in the Xinjiang region, in the Inner Mongolian Plateau and in the northwestern part of the Loess Plateau. A warming and wet early Holocene (10–8 ka BP) in the northern Tibetan Plateau is most likely related to high effective soil moisture resulting from snow and ice melting. We propose here that the middle Holocene Climatic Optimum (8–5 ka BP) in arid to semi-arid China was primarily a delayed response of the low latitude oceans to high latitude peak insolation (9–8 ka BP).
