Quadruple-chain ladder polyphenylsiloxane (Ph-QCLP) was synthesized by a supramolecular template-directed stepwisecoupling and polymerization method including three steps: (1) Multifunctionalladder monomer M2with four Si–Cl,four Si–OMe, and four Si–N groups was designed and synthesizedby precoupling reaction. In solution M2s spontaneously self-assembled to be ladder superstructure(LS) by synergy of the hydrogen bonding and the π–πstacking interactions. Directed by LStemplate in a neutralcondition that guaranteed the Si–OMe and Si–N groupswere left undestroyed, M2s underwentcontrolled hydrolysis of Si–Cl groups and dehydrochlorinationpolymerization to be 1,3-di(3-aminophenylamino)-tetramethoxyl-disiloxane-bridgedladder polyphenylsiloxanes (DCLP). (2) A precursor, bis-m-phenylenediamine-bridged quadruple-chain ladder polyphenylsiloxanes(QCLP), was synthesized via the controlled hydrolysisof Si–OMe groups of DCLPfollowed by confineddehydration polymerization in an alkaline condition which guaranteedthe Si–N groups were still undestroyed. (3) The target Ph-QCLPwas obtained through synchronous bridge-cleavage andin situ condensation of QCLP. The whole reaction processwas well monitored by a concerted combination of FTIR, 1H NMR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and 29Si NMR measurements.In particular, 29Si NMR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA),and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results confirmed that Ph-QCLPpossessed well-defined quadruple-chain ladder structureand extremely high thermo-stability. Main observation and conclusion: Substantial progresses have been made toward the development of metal‐free catalysts for stereoselective ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of rac‐lactide. Yet the discovery of organic catalysts effective at ambient temperature remains a major challenge. Here, the bifunctional H‐bonding catalyst SQ‐1 containing a basic tertiary amine and squaramide motif proved to be good candidate for the stereoselective ROP of rac‐lactide at room temperature, yielding stereoregular polylactide with controlled molecular weights (up to 21.1 kg/mol) and high tacticity (PiESC up to 0.88). Furthermore, binary H‐bonding catalytic system consisting of squaramides (SQ‐2 to SQ‐6) and 1,8‐diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec‐7‐ene (DBU) could efficiently promote the ROP of rac‐lactide at room temperature within short reaction time. Among them, the most bulky squaramide SQ‐2 exhibited the best steroselectivity towards the ROP of rac‐lactide without transesterification side reactions during the polymerization process. Comprehensive Summary: A series of titanium amido complexes (1‐Ti(NMe2)2 to 4‐Ti(NMe2)2) bearing NNO‐tridentate ligands was synthesized from the reactions of phenoxy‐imine‐amine ligands with one equivalent of Ti(NMe2)4. Subsequently, titanium dichloride complexes (1‐TiCl2 to 4‐TiCl2) were prepared by treatment of titanium amido complexes with excess Me3SiCl in toluene. All metal complexes were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and the molecular structures of complexes of 2‐Ti(NMe2)2, 2‐TiCl2, and 4‐TiCl2 in the solid state were determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. Upon activation with MAO, titanium dichloride complexes as single‐site catalysts were extremely active toward ethylene homopolymerization with great control on molecular weight and distribution. In particular, 3‐TiCl2/MAO exhibited an activity as high as 1.35 × 108 g(PE)·mol−1(Ti)·h−1 at 70°C and produced polyethylene with high molecular weight (41.7 × 104 g∙mol−1) and very narrow distribution (Đ = 1.23). In the presence of 1‐octene as comonomer, linear low‐density polyethylenes (LLDPEs) with ultrahigh molecular weights (Mw = 136—326 × 104 g∙mol−1) and narrow distributions (Đ = 1.20—1.50) were successfully synthesized. We investigated the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of di- and tri-ethylene glycol monomethyl ether functionalized L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs) using hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) as primary initiator and 1,5,7-triazabicyclo-[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) as co-initiator. The binary initiator system afforded a living ROP for these pegylated NCAs, and a series of homopolypeptides with controlled molecular weight (MW) and low polydispersity were obtained. We then systematically studied the helical content and clouding point (CP) dependence on polypeptide MW using circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and turbidity measurements, respectively. We found that the helical content of both homopolypeptides increased with MW, but the triethylene glycol functionalized poly-L-glutamate (poly-L-EGGlu) intended to form more stable α-helical structure than diethylene glycol functionalized counterpart (poly-L-EGGlu) at similar MW. Accordingly, the CP of poly-L-EGGlu with known end group has strong dependence on its helical content, which is essentially determined by MW. Our results suggested that the thermal responsive properties of these unique pegylated poly-L-glutamates not only rely on their chemical structure but also on their secondary structures, which is different from conventional thermal responsive polymers. Abstract: Four kinds of well defined poly(N-methacryloyl-L-amino acid)s were prepared via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The effects of molecular structure, molecular weight, and end-group on their responsive properties in water were investigated. We found that the monomer structure is critical for the polymer to exhibit stimuli-responsive properties in water; only polymers derived from aspartic acid showed defined dual thermo- and pH-responsive properties. To study the effects of molecular weight and end group on the lower critical solution temperature behavior of poly(N-methacryloyl-L-β-isopropyl aspartic acid) (PMAIPAC), a series of PMAIPAC homopolymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersities were prepared and treated with excess radical initiators to give defined end groups. The cloud point of PMAIPAC was found to increase with the increase of solution pH, due to the ionization of carboxylic acid groups, and decrease with the increase of molecular weight. The structure of end groups also affects the cloud point of PMAIPAC particularly for low molecular weight samples at low pH. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Tensile deformation behavior of bimodal polyethylene (PE) was investigated by employing coarse-grained (CG) molecular dynamics simulations based on a united atom model. The bimodal PE was modeled by blending two linear polyethylene chains with different molecular weights. The mechanical response and corresponding conformational behaviors of the polymer melt during stretching were recorded as a function of strain under both high and low strain rates. We find that the tensile toughness was enhanced in an additive fashion by increasing the fraction of polymers with high molecular weight in bimodal PE. During elongation, the polymer chain extends and orients itself along the loading direction. Surprisingly, varying the bimodal distribution and the strain rates, the disentanglement does not synergistically follow the tendency of chain expansion and ordering along the tensile direction as the strain is gradually raised, implying that multiple deformation modes might exist during the plastic flow process. The molecular origin of this unique development of the entanglement network in bimodal PE is discussed in detail. The eco-environmentally PVLs without catalyst-residue have been facilely synthesized using heterogeneous PS- t -BuP 2 catalyst by simple filtration and without tedious purification process. • The heterogeneous catalyst PS- t -BuP 2 was employed for ROP of δ -VL. • PS- t -BuP 2 is easily recovered and reusable for five cycles without deactivation. • PVLs without catalyst-residue are synthesized using PS- t -BuP 2 by simple filtration. We demonstrated that the dimeric 1- tert -butyl-2,2,4,4,4-pentakis(dimethylamino)-2Λ5, 4Λ5-catenadi(phosphazene) supported on polystyrene (PS- t -BuP 2 ) was an efficient and recyclable catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of δ -valerolactone (δ -VL). The heterogeneous catalyst PS- t -BuP 2 could be recycled and reused for five consecutive cycles without significant decrease of catalytic activity. The monomer conversions maintained between 79% and 85% for five cycles. Using BnOH as initiator, the produced polyvalerolactones (PVLs) had controlled molecular weights (MWs) and narrow MW distributions (Đ), and the products were free of catalyst by simple filtration. A new superbase, the cyclic trimeric phosphazene base (CTPB), was prepared with high yield and purity. In the presence of alcohol, the CTPB serves as a highly efficient organocatalyst for ring-opening polymerization of the 'non-polymerizable' γ-butyrolactone to offer well-defined poly(γ-butyrolactone) with high conversions (up to 98 %) at −60 °C. The produced polymers have high molecular weights (up to 22.9 kg mol−1) and low polydispersity distributions (1.27-1.50). NMR analysis of initiation process and the structural analysis of resulting polymers by MALDI-TOF suggest a mechanism involving an activating initiator which leads only to linear polymers with BnO/H chain ends. The properties and applications of silicone elastomers depended on the molecular structure and composition of polysiloxane precursors, which were the most technologically important silicon-based polymers. Preparation of perfect diphenyl silicone elastomers was challenging due to the unexpected branches formed during the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCP) of phenylcyclosiloxane monomer. In this contribution, diphenyl silicone elastomer precursors with controlled structure were successfully prepared by cyclic trimeric phosphazene base (CTPB) catalyzed ROCP of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D 4), octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane (D 4 8Ph), and 2,4,6,8-tetravinyl-2,4,6,8-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D 4 Vi) with high molecular weight up to 551.0 kg/mol and dispersity (Đ) ≤ 2.50. 29Si NMR characterization verified the random microstructures of the resulting diphenyl containing polysiloxanes without chain branching. Moreover, the silica-filled elastomer prepared from poly(dimethylsiloxane- co -vinylmethylsiloxane) (PMVS) and poly(dimethylsiloxane- co -diphenylsiloxane- co -vinylmethylsiloxane) (PMPVS) precursors exhibited very high elasticity, which can be stretched to 1043% with a high tensile strength of 7.7 MPa. Thermal oxidation aging test proved the excellent thermal aging resistance of the phenyl-containing silicone elastomers. Self-healing polyester elastomers with good mechanical strength, excellent toughness and rapid self-healing property were obtained by post-functionalized polyester backbone with UPy units through a thiol-ene click reaction. It is a desirable to prepare high performance polyester elastomers that possess high strength, good elasticity and efficient self-healing capability. Herein, we report the preparation of such elastomers based on aliphatic polyesters cross-linked by UPy-UPy quadruple hydrogen bonding. A functional monomer α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone (MBL) was copolymerized with ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) to give pendent double bonds functionalized copolyester precursors, which were subject to post-modification with UPy groups via the efficient thiol-ene click reaction. Then, the self-healing polyester elastomers were finally obtained by tuning the molecular weight of precursors, the contents of UPy units and crystallization behaviors. The results show that high polyester molecular weight, moderate UPy content and inhibition of crystallization are helpful to improve the mechanical and self-healing properties of elastomers. The obtained elastomers show good mechanical strength (1.0–1.5 MPa), excellent elongation at break (970–1560 %) and toughness (9.6–11.9 MJ/m3), and have the rapid self-healing property (>70 % after healing at 60 °C for 2 h), displaying great potential in biomedical applications. High molecular weights polydiethylsiloxanes and random poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-diethylsiloxane) copolysiloxanes were synthesized via cyclic trimeric phosphazene base catalyzed ring-opening (co)polymerization at room temperature. [Display omitted] • PDES homopolymers, with molecular weight up to 404.0 kg/mol, were conveniently synthesized at room temperature within 4 hrs using CTPB as catalyst. • High molecular weight random copolymers of diethylsiloxane with different dimethylsiloxane contents were successfully prepared within 5 min at room temperature in high yields. • Reactivity ratio determination experiments suggested that the ROCP of D 3 Et with D 4 mediated by CTPB proceeded in a fully random manner, demonstrating the high catalytic activity of CTPB. Polysiloxanes containing diethylsiloxane units with unique low temperature flexibility have been widely applied under extreme conditions in many fields. However, the synthesis of polydiethylsiloxane (PDES) and its copolymers was challenging due to the easy accessible polymerization-depolymerization equilibrium between linear propagating chains and cyclosiloxane byproducts in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of hexaethylcyclotrisiloxane (D 3 Et) and the large reactivity gaps among different cyclosiloxanes in the copolymerization. In this work, PDESs were successfully prepared via cyclic trimeric phosphazene base (CTPB) catalyzed ROP at room temperature in high yields. The ROP of D 3 Et proceeded efficiently with low CTPB loading (low to 0.01 mol%) and the resulting PDES homopolymers had high molecular weights (up to 404.0 kg/mol). Moreover, poly(dimethylsiloxane- co -diethylsiloxane) (PMES) random copolymers with tunable diethylsiloxane contents (20 ∼ 87 mol%) can be directly prepared via ring-opening copolymerization (ROCP) of D 3 Et and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D 4) using CTPB as catalyst within 5 min at ambient temperature. The reactivity ratio of D 3 Et (r = 1.04) and D 4 (r = 0.89) suggested the comparable reactivity between D 3 Et and D 4 to ensure their random copolymerization characteristics, thus proving the unique high efficiency of CTPB catalyst applied here. Microstructure characterizations of the PMES copolymers by 1H and 29Si NMR verified the controlled copolymer composition and the random distribution of diethylsiloxane and dimethylsiloxane units. The thermal property investigations by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated the good low-temperature flexibility and thermal stability of PMES copolymers, displaying great potential in extreme environmental applications. Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a class of high-performance engineering plastics, exhibiting a unique set of properties and applications. Although many advances have been achieved in recent years, the synthesis of UHMWPE is still a great challenge. In this contribution, a series of zirconium and hafnium complexes, [2,6-(R1)2-4-R2-C6H2-N-C(camphyl)=C(camphyl)-N-2,6-(R1)2-4-R2-C6H2]MMe2(THF) (1-Zr: R1 = Me, R2 = H, M = Zr; 2-Zr: R1 = Me, R2 = Me, M = Zr; 1-Hf: R1 = Me, R2 = H, M = Hf; 2-Hf: R1 = Me, R2 = Me, M = Hf), bearing bidentate NN ligands with the bulky camphyl backbone were synthesized by the stoichiometric reactions of α-diimine ligands with MMe4 (M = Hf or Zr). All Zr and Hf metal complexes were analyzed using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and the molecular structures of complexes 1-Zr and 1-Hf were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing that the original α-diimine ligand was selectively reduced into the ene-diamido form and generated an 1,3-diaza-2-metallocyclopentene ring in the metal complexes. Zr complexes 1-Zr and 2-Zr showed moderate activity (up to 388 kg(PE)·mol−1(M)·h−1), poor copolymerization ability, but unprecedented molecular weight capability toward ethylene/1-octene copolymerization. Therefore, copolymers with ultrahigh molecular weights (>600 or 337 × 104 g∙mol−1) were successfully synthesized by 1-Zr or 2-Zr, respectively, with the borate cocatalyst [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4]. Surprisingly, Hf complexes 1-Hf and 2-Hf showed negligible activity under otherwise identical conditions, revealing the great influence of metal centers on catalytic performances.
