Soil pH is critically important in regulating soil nutrients and thus influencing the biodiversity and ecosystem functions of terrestrial ecosystems. Despite the ongoing threat of nitrogen (N) pollution especially in the fast-developing regions, it remains unclear how increasing N deposition affects soil pH across global terrestrial ecosystems. By conducting a global meta-analysis with paired observations of soil pH under N addition and control from 634 studies spanning major types of terrestrial ecosystems, we show that soil acidification increases rapidly with N addition amount and is most severe in neutral-pH soils. Grassland soil pH decreases most strongly under high N addition while wetlands are the least acidified. By extrapolating these relationships to global mapping, we reveal that atmospheric N deposition leads to a global average soil pH decline of -0.16 in the past 40 years and regions encompassing Eastern United States, Southern Brazil, Europe, and South and East Asia are the hotspots of soil acidification under N deposition. Our results highlight that anthropogenically amplified atmospheric N deposition has profoundly altered global soil pH and chemistry. East Asia's temperate deciduous forests served as sanctuary for Tertiary relict trees, but their ages and response to past climate change remain largely unknown. To address this issue, we elucidated the evolutionary and population demographic history of Cercdiphyllum, comprising species in China/Japan ( Cercdiphyllum japonicum) and central Japan ( Cercdiphyllum magnificum)., Fifty-three populations were genotyped using chloroplast and ribosomal DNA sequences and microsatellite loci to assess molecular structure and diversity in relation to past (Last Glacial Maximum) and present distributions based on ecological niche modelling., Late Tertiary climate cooling was reflected in a relatively recent speciation event, dated at the Mio-/Pliocene boundary. During glacials, the warm-temperate C. japonicum experienced massive habitat losses in some areas (north-central China/north Japan) but increases in others (southwest/-east China, East China Sea landbridge, south Japan). In China, the Sichuan Basin and/or the middle-Yangtze were source areas of postglacial northward recolonization; in Japan, this may have been facilitated through introgressive hybridization with the cool-temperate C. magnificum., Our findings challenge the notion of relative evolutionary and demographic stability of Tertiary relict trees, and may serve as a guideline for assessing the impact of Neogene climate change on the evolution and distribution of East Asian temperate plants. Condensation inside marine containers occurs during voyages owing to weather changes. In this study, we define the condensation probability along one of the major routes for container ships between Asia and Europe. First, the inside and outside air conditions were measured on land in Japan, and a correlation analysis was conducted to derive their relationship. Second, onboard measurements were conducted for 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) ships to determine the variation in outside air conditions. Complicated patterns of weather change were observed with changes in latitude, sea area, and season. Third, condensation probability was estimated based on a multi-regression analysis with land and onboard measured data. The maximum condensation probability in westbound or eastbound voyages in winter was found to be approximately 50%. The condensation probability estimation method established in this study can contribute to the quantification of cargo damage risks for the planning of marine container transportation voyages. Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and telomere length are biologically associated with healthy aging. However, the association between them and their interaction on frailty remain unclear in humans. Here, a cross-sectional study based on residents from Guangxi longevity county was conducted to investigate the association of serum BCAAs, peripheral leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and frailty. A total of 1,034 subjects aged 20 to 110 years were recruited in the study. The real-time qPCR method and a targeted metabolomics approach based on isotope dilution liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) method were used for measurement of LTL and BCAAs, respectively. A frailty score defined as the proportion of accumulated deficits based on 24 aging-related items was used assess the health status of elderly subjects. First, we found that a higher concentration of BCAAs was significantly associated with longer LTL only in middle-aged subjects, independent of age and BMI (P < 0.05). In the oldest-old subjects, we identified a significantly inverse association between BCAAs and frailty score (P < 0.001), even after adjustment for age and BMI (P < 0.05). Additionally, we recognized a statistically significant synergetic interaction between BCAAs and LTL on frailty score in the oldest-old subjects by the general linear model (P = 0.042), although we did not find any significant association between LTL and frailty score. In summary, our findings suggest a potentially protective effect of circulating BCAAs on LTL and frailty based on the subjects from longevity county in East Asia and indicate a potential synergetic interaction between BCAAs and LTL in healthy aging. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death in the world. Atherosclerosis, a kind of chronic vascular disorder related to multiple pathogenic processes, has been reported to be an underlying cause of CVDs. Shexiang Baoxin Pill (SBP) is a traditional Chinese medicine formulation and has been broadly used for the treatment of CVDs in East Asia. However, whether SBP affects the development of atherosclerosis is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the antiatherosclerotic roles and relevant mechanisms of SBP in apolipoprotein E knockout mice. Our results showed that SBP treatment markedly decreased the size of atherosclerotic plaques of the entire aorta and the aortic sinus. Biochemical analyses indicated that SBP gavage improved oxidative stress in vivo, as seen by the level elevation of SOD, CAT, and GSH and the level reduction of MDA, H2O2, and MPO. Moreover, the concentration of MCP-1, IFN-γ, and IL-17A was reduced, and the content of IL-10 and TGF-β1 was increased in the serum from SBP-treated mice. We discovered that the expression levels of inflammatory factors including VCAM-1, ICAM-1, IL-6, and IL-2 in the vascular wall of the SBP group were also decreased in comparison with those of the normal saline group. Moreover, we found that SBP alleviated the activation of inflammation-related pathways in the aorta tissue, as seen by the level elevation of Mfn2 and reduced phosphorylation of p38, JNK, and NF-κB. Furthermore, western blot showed that SBP administration reduced the level of SR-A and LOX-1 and elevated the content of LXRα, ABCA1, and ABCG1 in the arterial wall, indicating that SBP was capable of alleviating lipid influx and facilitating lipid efflux. We aimed to evaluate the effect of four common variants (rs2237892, rs2283228, rs2237895, and rs2237897) in KCNQ1 on susceptibility of type 2 diabetes (T2D) by performing a case-control study as well as a comprehensive meta-analysis. We genotyped these four variants in two sets of Chinese Han population, comprising a total of 2533 type 2 diabetic patients and 2643 nondiabetic controls. We also performed a meta-analysis of our results with published studies in East Asians, meanwhile assessing the population attributable risk (PAR) of these variants. By combining our case-control sets, a total of 45,204 T2D cases and 42,832 controls were included in the meta-analyses. The per-allele ORs ranged from 1.24 to 1.33, and the PARs ranged from 15.8% to 31.8%, with SNP rs2237892 being the most widely studied (16 articles containing a total of 38,338 cases and 35,907 controls), showing strongest association (per-allele OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.28-1.39) and indicating the highest PAR (31.8%). This study confirmed the strong association between common variants in KCNQ1 and risk of T2D. Portunus trituberculatus is one of the most commercially important marine crustacean species for both aquaculture and fisheries in Southeast and East Asia. Production of monosex female stocks is attractive in commercial production since females are more profitable than their male counterparts. Identification and mapping of the sex-linked locus is an efficient way to elucidate the mechanisms of sex determination in the species and support the development of protocols for monosex female production. In this study, a sex-averaged map and two sex-specific genetic maps were constructed based on 2b-restriction site-associated DNA sequencing. A total of 6349 genetic markers were assigned to 53 linkage groups. Little difference was observed in the pattern of sex-specific recombination between females and males. Association analysis and linkage mapping identified 7 markers strongly associated with sex, four of which were successfully mapped on the extremity of linkage group 22. Females were homozygous and males were heterozygous for those 7 markers strongly suggesting an XX/XY sex determination system in this species. Three Markers were successfully validated in a wild population of P. trituberculatus and exhibited a specificity ranging from 93.3% to 100%. A high-resolution melting based assay was developed for sex genotyping. This study provides new knowledge and tools for sex identification which will help the development of protocols for monosex female production of P. trituberculatus and support future genomic studies. • A genome survey and restriction site-associated DNA sequencing were combined. • A high-density genetic map was created with 53 linkage groups. • XX/XY sex determination system was validated. • Male-specific alleles were identified and validated for 7 SNP markers. • A PCR-based genetic sex identification method was successfully validated.
