The Ventilago Gaertn. (Rhamnaceae) is widely distributed in pantropical areas of Africa, Asia, and Australia. However, fossil records of this taxon are sparse, which limits understanding of the evolution and biogeographic history of the genus. In the present study, we report and describe two new fossil species of Ventilago, V. siwalika sp. nov. from the Miocene sediments of Himachal Pradesh, western Himalaya, and V. pliocenica sp. nov. from the Pliocene sediments of Jharkhand, eastern India based on single‐winged samaras. Ventilago pliocenica is characterized by a prominent midvein, obtuse to sub‐round apex with mucronate tip, longitudinal secondary veins extending the full length of the fruit, and reticulate nature of higher‐order veins, the presence of equatorial rim, the hypanthium, and short pedicel. On the other hand, V. siwalika is characterized by a prominent midvein, obtuse to sub‐round apex with mucronate tip, longitudinal secondary veins extending the full length of the fruit, and reticulate nature of higher‐order veins. Our discovery represents the first unambiguous fossil record of single‐winged samara of Ventilago from India and provides valuable insights into the evolution of this genus. In this paper, we also review its biogeographic history and add new information to understand its hypothetical migration route. Recently, large parts of India and the global South have experienced a rapid transformation from mud to cement houses, which has been promoted by governments and cement companies for its positive impacts on household socioeconomic status and gender inequalities. But we know little else about how different communities are participating in house transformation. In this paper, I study the embodied and affective dimensions of house transformation in Himachal Pradesh, India. I argue that house transformation is also the transformation of traditional gender and caste identities into new middle‐class identities which benefits some social groups, like upper‐caste women and Dalit men, but not others like Dalit women along intersectional lines. My work extends literature in infrastructure studies and urban political ecology by highlighting how the materiality of infrastructures interacts with everyday dimensions of difference to reproduce the marginalisation of historically oppressed groups along intersectional lines of class, caste, and gender. Rural and remote area electrification is of grave concern around the globe. Therefore, well-planned and cost-effective microgrids integrating renewable energy sources are emerging as effective solutions. However, the microgrid's stable operation and its future deployment is affected by the perturbations caused due to uncertainity in renewable sources, dependency on the battery state of charge, and load variation. So, considering the possible concerns affecting the planning and development of a microgrid for any given region, this paper proposes a comprehensive performance assessment of the hybrid residential microgrid based on a load model of Kibber village in Himachal Pradesh, India. The proposed approach is divided into three parts for the best planning of microgrids. Firstly, the MATLAB–Simulink software technically analyzes the system performance under perturbations considering the available renewable sources. Secondly, an economic analysis using HOMER Pro software is done to examine the cost-effectiveness of the proposed microgrid model through the simulation of electrical loads for Kibber village, considering the available renewable sources. Lastly, a real-time analysis of the proposed prototype of programmable logic controller-based hardware test bench has been developed, aiming for future regional microgrid deployment. System voltage, frequency, power shared, percentage of load met, energy cost, available renewable energy resource, etc. have been considered for validating the proposed controller. The proposed comprehensive assessment of the microgrid model is reproducible with necessary modifications for any geographical location. The recent United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) survey states that India has 197 endangered languages. Himachal Pradesh, a state in India, has topped the list with seven definitely endangered languages, and Kinnauri-Pahari being the one. Due to the lack of availability of digitized resources, the corpus compilation is a bit difficult. This paper presents and releases the Kinnauri-Pahari (ISO-639-3:kjo) dataset, consisting of the 43,362 Monolingual and 20,307 Parallel sentences in version_0.1. The dataset was tested on the Statistical, and Neural Machine Translation and their results were evaluated using different evaluation metrics. The paper describes the recent devastating landslide of Kotrupi, Himachal Pradesh in India which had claimed many human lives and properties along its course on 13 August 2017. This event was the third reactivation of the slide as per data available. The study for this landslide involves a preliminary investigation of the site and comparison of pre- and post-event slope stability analysis. Other than rainfall, the combined effect of differential weathering rate of the debris and soil layers, low material strength, and the presence of a fault zone was found to be the primary cause of instability. The analysis was carried out with the geotechnical investigation and numerical modeling with the help of finite element model-based Phase 2 simulator. The significant findings of this paper include numerical simulation of pre- and post-event slide as stated under unsaturated and saturated condition. In this paper, a new fuzzy logic (FL) model is proposed for assessing the health status of power transformers. In addition, the detection of incipient faults is achieved where two or more faults exist simultaneously. The process is carried out by integrating a fuzzy logic model with the conventional International Electric Committee (IEC) ratio codes method. As transformer oil insulation deteriorates, excess percentages of dissolved gases such as hydrogen, methane, ethane, acetylene and ethylene are induced within the trasnformer. The status of oil health is generally assessed using these gas concentrations. Therefore, in the proposed model, 31 fuzzy rules are designed based on the severity levels of these gases in order to determine the health index (HI) of the oil. Similarly, any incipient faults along with their severity are also detected using the proposed fuzzy logic model with 22 expert rules. To validate the proposed fuzzy logic model, the data for dissolved gases in 50 working transformers operated by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB), India, are collected. Over the years, calculations for the health index have been performed using conventional dissolved gas analysis (DGA) interpretation methods. The shortcomings of these methods, such as non-reliability and inaccuracy, are successfully overcome using the proposed model. The detection of incipient faults is normally performed using key gas, Rogers ratios, the Duval triangle, Dornenburg ratios, modified Rogers ratios and the IEC ratio codes methods. The shortcomings of these conventional ratio code methods in identifying incipient faults in some typical cases, ie multiple incipient fault cases, are overcome by the proposed fuzzy logic model. This paper presents a pioneer study on the microbial diversity and antibacterial potential of hive bees (Apiscerana and A.mellifera) honey collected from Himachal Pradesh. In total, 26 bacteria (14 from A.cerana and 12 from A.mellifera) but no fungal isolate were recovered. Bee species and locations comparison in terms of bacterial load (log CFU/g) revealed maximum loads of 3.74 and 3.99 in the honey from A.cerana and Mandi location, respectively. The most prevalent strains (HC3, HC5, HC6, HC8 and HM2) were identified (16S rRNA ribotyping) as Staphylococcushaemolyticus (MT742636), "Bacillussubtilis subsp. stecoris" (MT742637), Bacillussafensis subsp. safensis (MT742638), "Bacilluszanthoxyli" (MT742639) and Bacillussafensis subsp. safensis (MT938911). The apiary honey displayed good to excellent inhibitory activity against Escherichiacoli ATCC1041 whereas, fair to good against Bacillussubtilis ATCC6633, Pseudomonasaeruginosa ATCC10662, Salmonellatyphi NCTC786 and Klebsiellapneumoniae ATCC13883, highlighting its use as a therapeutic agent. Furthermore, it can be effective in minimizing numerous side effects associated with the consumption of synthetic drugs for treating bacterial infections thereby signifying the role of honey as a healthier substitute for synthetic drugs. Evaluation of stability of artificial slopes created due to road construction in the mountainous terrain is very important but often a neglected aspect. The safe execution of road-cut slopes depends upon the level of understanding achieved in defining the engineering behaviour of rock masses with respect to its deformation and mechanical attributes. Understanding the realistic response of the rock mass to excavation of rock strata requires proper analysis related to influence of structural elements on their continuous characterization for facilitating safe and economical development of cut slopes along the road sections. In this paper structurally and non-structurally controlled rock slope classification systems are implemented to undertake comprehensive evaluation of stability of road-cut slopes. The work carried out involves collection of various inputs in form of rock mass and discontinuity characteristics from ten cut slopes along a road section in Kullu area, Himachal Pradesh, India. Rock samples were collected from site and laboratory testing has been undertaken to determine the intact rocks strength. Beside these, the kinematic analysis was performed to illustrate the geometrical relationship between various joint sets and the slope face so as to determine their failure mechanism. Several rock mass classification systems developed for rock slope stability assessment are evaluated for known slope conditions. The stability assessment for all identified cut slopes is compared using slope mass rating (SMR), Q-slope and slope stability rating (SSR) methods. Design charts proposed for various factor of safety values have been utilized to evaluate the stability of studied road-cut slopes. Background: The current production of bioethanol based on lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) highly depends on thermostable enzymes and extremophiles owing to less risk of contamination. Thermophilic bacterial cellulases are preferred over fungi due to their higher growth rate, presence of complex multi-enzymes, stability, and enhanced bioconversion efficiency. Corncob, underutilized biomass, ensures energy conservation due to high lignocellulosic and more fermentable sugar content. In the present study, the thermophilic bacterium Bacillus aerius CMCPS1, isolated from the thermal springs of Manikaran, Himachal Pradesh, India, was characterized in terms of its activity, stability, and hydrolytic capacity. A two-step process comprising: (i) a combined strategy of hydrodynamic cavitation reaction (HCR)-coupled enzymatic (LccH at 6.5 U) pretreatment for delignification and (ii) subsequent hydrolysis of pre-treated (HCR-LccH) corncob biomass (CCB) using a thermostable cocktail of CMCPS1 was adopted to validate the efficiency of the process. Some of the parameters studied include lignin reduction, cellulose increase, and saccharification efficiency. Result: Among the five isolates obtained by in situ enrichment on various substrates, B. aerius CMCPS1, isolated from hot springs, exhibited the maximum hydrolytic activity of 4.11. The GH activity of the CMCPS1 strain under submerged fermentation revealed maximum filter paper activity (FPA) and endoglucanase activity of 4.36 IU mL−1 and 2.98 IU mL−1, respectively, at 44 h. Similarly, the isolate produced exoglucanase and β-glucosidase with an activity of 1.76 IU mL−1 and 1.23 IU mL−1 at 48 h, respectively. More specifically, the enzyme endo-1,4-β-d glucanase E.C.3.2.1.4 (CMCase) produced by B. aerius CMCPS1 displayed wider stability to pH (3–9) and temperature (30–90 °C) than most fungal cellulases. Similarly, the activity of CMCase increased in the presence of organic solvents (118% at 30% acetone v/v). The partially purified CMCase from the culture supernatant of CMCPS1 registered 64% yield with twofold purification. The zymogram and SDS-PAGE analyses further confirmed the CMCase activity with an apparent molecular mass of 70 kDa. The presence of genes specific to cellulases, such as cellulose-binding domain CelB, confirmed the presence of GH family 46 and β-glucosidase activity (GH3). The multifunctional cellulases of CMCPS1 were evaluated for their saccharification efficiency on laccase (LccH, a fungal laccase from Hexagonia hirta MSF2)-pretreated corncob in a HCR. The lignin and hemicelluloses removal efficiency of HCR-LccH was 54.1 and 6.57%, respectively, with an increase in cellulose fraction (42.25%). The saccharification efficiency of 55% was achieved with CMCPS1 multifunctional cellulases at 50 °C and pH 5.0. Conclusion: The multifunctional cellulase complex of B. aerius CMCPS1 is a potential biocatalyst for application in lignocellulosic biomass-based biorefineries. Objectives: Poor discharge communication is associated with negative health outcomes in high-income countries. However, quality of discharge communication has received little attention in India and many other low and middle-income countries. Primary objective: To investigate verbal and documented discharge communication for chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) patients. Secondary objective: To explore the relationship between quality of discharge communication and health outcomes. Methods: Design: Prospective study. Setting: Three public hospitals in Himachal Pradesh and Kerala states, India. Participants: 546 chronic NCD (chronic respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease or diabetes) patients. Piloted questionnaires were completed at admission, discharge and five and eighteen-week follow-up covering health status, discharge communication practices and health-seeking behaviour. Logistic regression was used to explore the relationship between quality of discharge communication and health outcomes. Outcome measures: Primary: Patient recall and experiences of verbal and documented discharge communication. Secondary: Death, hospital readmission and self-reported deterioration of NCD/s. Results: All patients received discharge notes, predominantly on sheets of paper with basic pre-printed headings (71%) or no structure (19%); 31% of notes contained all the following information required for facilitating continuity of care: diagnosis, medication information, lifestyle advice, and follow-up instructions. Patient reports indicated notable variations in verbal information provided during discharge consultations; 50% received ongoing treatment/management information and 23% received lifestyle advice. Within 18 weeks of follow-up, 25 (5%) patients had died, 69 (13%) had been readmitted and 62 (11%) reported that their chronic NCD/s had deteriorated. Significant associations were found between low-quality documented discharge communication and death (AOR = 3.00; 95% CI 1.27,7.06) and low-quality verbal discharge communication and self-reported deterioration of chronic NCD/s (AOR = 0.46; 95% CI 0.25,0.83) within 18-weeks of follow-up. Conclusions: Sub-optimal discharge practices may be compromising continuity and safety of chronic NCD patient care. In this paper, we examine the on-the-ground realities of upstream-downstream negotiations and transactions over ecosystem services. We explore the engagement, negotiation, implementation, and postimplementation phases of a "reciprocal water access" (RWA) agreement between village communities and municipal water users at Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, India. We aim to highlight how external actors drove the payments for ecosystem services agenda through a series of facilitation and research engagements, which were pivotal to the RWA's adoption, and how the agreement fared once external agents withdrew. In the postimplementation period, the RWA agreement continues to be upheld by upstream communities amidst evolving, competing land-use changes and claims. The introduction of cash payments for environmental services for forest-water relationships has given rise to multifaceted difficulties for the upstream hamlets, which has impeded the functionality of their forest management committee. Upstream communities' formal rights and abilities to control and manage their resources are dynamic and need strengthening and assurance; these developments result in fluctuating transaction and opportunity costs not originally envisaged by the RWA agreement. The paper demonstrates the importance of an explicit understanding of the local politics of negotiation and implementation to determine the effectiveness of compensationbased mechanisms for the supply of ecosystem services. The Himalayan foreland basin originated through the India–Asia continent–continent collision driven by downward flexing of the Indian plate. It forms an ideal assemblage to delineate the role of process-controlled sedimentary fill in basin evolution. This paper provides the first comprehensive account of the lithofacies associations and architecture of the Middle Siwalik succession of the Himalayan foreland basin in the south-central Himachal Pradesh sector, India through detailed sedimentological analysis. Eight lithofacies form three distinct sand, gravel, and silt-mudstone lithofacies associations pertaining to specific depositional environments. Architectural elements have been defined together with bounding surfaces separating them. Sedimentological investigations reveal that the Middle Siwalik sequence represents a flash flood dominated piedmont fan and proximal to middle megafan. The fan expansion cycles indicate tectono-climatically controlled sedimentation in the Middle Siwalik foreland basin. Frequent flooding and a high sedimentation rate were influenced by the tectonic uplift along the reactivated thrusts in the hinterland coupled with phases of monsoonal intensification. • The studied Middle Siwalik belongs to a yet unattended Himachal sector of the Indian Himalaya. • Architectural documentation reveals different orders of fluvial hierarchy. • Sedimentation took place in the foreland basin setting solely by continental processes. • Contemporaneous piedmont fan and megafan sedimentary sequences are identified and interpreted. • The Middle Siwalik Foreland Basin of the present study is compared with foreland basins of similar tectonic settings globally. The state of Himachal Pradesh, over the past decades, has seen a marked surge in accelerating the development leading to remarkable growth and plethora of livelihood opportunities. This paper brings out the case of a village, Gagal, depicting the fortunes that the development has brought in the quotidian life of people and changing the picture of the village giving it a new dimension. The paper compiles selected case studies that .reflect on the success of development programs initiated in the area and how the people have drawn benefits from them. It also throws light on definite flaws and loopholes that have led to people lose their faith in these initiatives and explains how these programs have failed to accomplish their goals on the ground reality. Large-scale tree planting has been advocated for decades in many countries as a cost-effective strategy to mitigate carbon, rejuvenate degraded landscapes, and support local livelihoods. Recent studies, however, suggest limited ecological and livelihood impacts of tree planting programs, indicating possible limits to tree planting as a natural climate solution. In this paper, we explore these carrying capacity-like limits by evaluating the site suitability of forestry landscapes of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh using theory/expert-based rules and machine learning algorithms. We find that the state can only achieve a maximum of 31.54% forest cover due to socio-ecological and biophysical constraints, much less than India's goal of bringing 66% of the total geographical area of Himalayan states into forest cover. The low availability of suitable lands for growing trees, together with poor plantation site selection by forest range officers limit the use of tree planting as a sole climate mitigation strategy. To approach theoretical planting limits, we propose an ePSA (e-Plantation Site Assistant) recommendation system based on our site-suitability results to assist forest rangers in selecting suitable sites for planting trees. An initial deployment of the recommender system suggests its potential utility in shaping the long-term success of tree plantations as an effective carbon strategy in northern India and beyond. Overall, we argue that there is a need to realign over-ambitious national and international tree planting targets with actual limits from site characteristics to avoid massive wastage of funds and to obtain feasible carbon mitigation outcomes. Snow- and glacier melt are important contributors to river discharge in high-elevated areas of the Himalayan region. Thus, it is important that the key processes controlling snow and glacier accumulation and melting, are well represented in hydrological models. In this study, the sensitivity of modelled discharge to different snowmelt parameterizations was evaluated. A distributed hydrological model that operated on a 1 × 1 km2 grid at a daily time resolution was applied to a high-elevated mountainous basin, the Upper Beas basin in Indian Himalaya, including several sub-basins with a varying degree of glacier covered areas. The snowmelt was calculated using (i) a temperature-index method, (ii) an enhanced temperature-index method including a shortwave radiation term, and (iii) an energy balance method. All model configurations showed similar performance at daily, seasonal, and annual timescales and a lower performance for the validation period than for the calibration period; a main reason being the failure to capture the observed negative trend in annual discharge in the validation period. The results suggest that model performance is more sensitive to the precipitation input, i.e. interpolation method than to the choice of snowmelt routine. India's nearly 1-million strong band of quasi-volunteer accredited social health activists (ASHAs) have been key actors in government efforts to control COVID-19. Utilizing a nationalist rhetoric of war, ASHAs were swiftly mobilized by the government in March 2020 as 'COVID warriors' engaged in tracking illness, disseminating information, and caring for quarantined individuals. The speed at which ASHAs were mobilized into mentally and physically grueling labor was all the more stunning given these minimally paid community health workers have long been seen to have low morale given their precarious, informalized work arrangements. Building on work examining the spatialities of global health governance alongside literature on geographic contingency, this paper explores the ways that nationalist COVID-19 war rhetoric promulgated from Delhi worked as a technology of health governance to propel ASHAs into certain forms of action, yet also opened up spaces of potentiality for them to reimagine their relationship to both the state and the communities they serve. In particular, in our analysis of in-depth telephone interviews with ASHA workers in the state of Himachal Pradesh, we find that their hailing as COVID warriors inspired patriotic calls to duty and legitimized their (long over-looked) roles as critical governance actors, yet also was subject to resistance and reworking due to a combination of institutional histories, local politics, as well as happenstantial everyday encounters of ASHA work. The precarious employment of ASHAs – in terms of basic remuneration as well as the great on-the-job risks that they have faced – underscores both the fragile nature of India's health governance system as well as possible political movements for its renewal. We conclude by calling for geographers to give greater attention to community health care workers as a key window into understanding the uneven ways in which health systems are made manifest on the ground, and their ability to respond to citizens' healthcare needs – both in the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. The present paper focused on the fluency component of scientific creative talent of elementary stage students of Himachal Pradesh with respect to area, type of school and gender. The researcher has taken the sample of 1120 elementary stage students of classes VII and VIII studying in Govt. and Private schools of Himachal affiliated to HP board of School Education, Dharamshala from five selected districts. To collect the requisite data for the present study, the investigator used Verbal Test of Scientific Creativity constructed by V. P. Sharma, retired professor and head Department of Psychology, R. S. University, Raipur (C. G.) and J. P. Shukla, Department of Psychology, R. S. University, Raipur, (C. G.). The researcher has employed the technique of three way ANOVA (2×2×2) to analyse the data. The results revealed that elementary stage students of urban area are more fluent in scientific creative talent as compared to the elementary stage students of rural area. Also there exists a significance difference between the two. The elementary stage boys exhibited slightly more Fluency than the elementary stage girls with a significant difference at highest level of significance. It is found in the study that Area and School, School and Gender interact significantly. The remote Himalayan region of Kinnaur in northwestern India is known for its carved wooden homes with decorative features. Relatively recent environmental policies have prompted limitations on wood collection. This, coupled with an increase in access to modern building materials, has resulted in dramatic changes in vernacular housing styles. Landscape analysis and interviews reveal that house form, building methods, and construction materials are all changing. However, decorative features are among the last remaining characteristics of the traditional house. This paper argues that small-scale architectural features are a significant part of an enduring vernacular landscape and allow a region to preserve traditional styles and identity, while also moving forward as a modernizing society. This paper examines the changing reputation of one village in Himachal Pradesh, India, looking back over 30 years. This village has long had a singular identity and local notoriety for its association with jadu (‘witchcraft’). I argue that in this village today the idea of ‘witchcraft’ as a potent malignant force is losing its old persuasiveness, and with this change the village is also shedding its unwanted reputation. Against claims for ‘the modernity of witchcraft’ in various parts of the world, I argue that, in this case at least, witchcraft is construed as distinctly unmodern. The capacity of jadu to cause fear and, equally, its value as an explanatory idiom are, I suggest, being overwhelmed by social changes, the cumulative effect of which has been to reduce the previous insularity of this village and greatly widen the social networks of its members. I pose two main questions. Why should this village have held such a particular reputation? And why should it now be on the wane? Linked to the second question is the relationship between this decline and local understandings of ‘modernity’. In developing my argument around the specificity of an unusual village, I also consider the significance of ‘the village’ as both social entity and, formerly, one cornerstone of the anthropological project. Finally, I reflect on the methodological opportunities of long-term familiarity with a setting, exemplified in the iterative nature of learning ethnographically, as the children known initially in early fieldwork become the adult conversationalists of today, partners in interpreting their own village's past. In exploring their explanations for the decline in the salience of jadu, the pivotal impact of education and the pressures of ‘time’ created by the ‘speed’ of modernity are both salient. This paper deals with the hydrocarbon source rock evaluation of the Subathu Formation exposed at Marhighat on Sarahan-Narag road in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Hydrocarbon potential of these sediments is estimated on the basis of palynofacies analysis and thermal alteration index (TAI) values based on the fossil spores/pollen colouration. The analyses are based on the classification and hydrocarbon generation potential of plant derived dispersed organic matter present in the sediments. The palynofacies analysis of Subathu Formation in the area reveal moderate to rich organic matter, with amorphous organic matter constituting the bulk of the total organic matter, followed by charcoal, biodegraded organic matter, fungal remains, spores/pollen and structured terrestrial organic matter. The TAI value for the organic matter in these sediments has been ascertained as 3.00. In the present scientific age, increasing complexities of life are becoming responsible for the need of guidance and guidance has been a vital aspect of education. The country's success in various fields depends on the proper guidance of adolescents. The students need guidance at each step of their life and mainly when they are in the growing and changing period of their life. The adolescents of today are the potent hope of the future and hence cannot be ignored in their guidance needs. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are the residential schools and the students studying in these schools are away from their family members. The focus of present research paper was to study the guidance needs of adolescents studying in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in Himachal Pradesh. A sample of 350 students of class 10+2 was selected from four Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in Himachal Pradesh. The results of the present study revealed that the male and female adolescents studying in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas have maximum need for vocational guidance and male adolescents have more need for guidance in psychological area than their female counterparts. In this paper, an attempt has been made to study the environmental awareness of secondary school teachers. For this purpose 100 secondary school teachers were randomly selected and Environmental Awareness Test developed by Dr.(Mrs.) Suman K. Katoch was administered to them. To find the significance of difference between the various groups 't'-test was applied. Results indicated that government and private secondary school teachers do not differ significantly in their environmental awareness. This paper deals with status of elementary level school education in Himachal Pradesh. The results of this study indicated that there is tremendous growth in the enrollment of students at the elementary level. The HP Govt. is taking necessary steps regarding the infrastructure of schools and quality education. The teacher training programs under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan are continuously organized by DIETs at block and state level. The study focuses on the various facilities provided by the Govt. on the schools like free text books, Mid Day Meal, scholarships, classrooms, drinking water and toilet facilities. It is found in the study that enrollment ratio of the students in the Private schools is continuously increasing and is the matter of concern for the Govt. the researcher tries to give some suggestions regarding the quality improvement in the teaching - learning process and other important concerns. Diversified Farming System is one of the main constituents of the National Watershed Development Project for Rainfed Areas (NWDPRA) to enable the farmers of a specified area to obtain maximum possible returns in addition to ensure a balanced productive system in the farming. But, various field experiences have shown the reluctance of farmers in adopting a complete package of practices recommended under the system due to various constraints. To explore these constraints, the study conducted in the "Chaura Watershed" of Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh revealed the main constraints as (i) non-availability of inputs timely such as improved varieties' seeds / seedlings, fertilizers, pesticides, etc.; (ii) high cost of inputs and lack of finance for purchasing them; (iii) undulating small land holding having low fertility due to frequent soil erosion; (iv) inclement weather conditions particularly at critical stagesof crop growth; (v) road blockade at the time of transportation, inadequate supply of packaging material and lack of remunerative prices for quality produce; (vi) lack of technical guidance in complete package of technology; (vii) lack of farmers' participation in the development work; (viii) low frequency of on-campus as well as off-campus training for farmers particularly for Mitra Kisans (Friend Farmers) and Gopals (Care-takers of common/waste land development activities); and (ix) lack of adequate publicity regarding implementation and functioning of the project. Summary: This paper conducts a statistical investigation into the impact of differences in economic benefits, wealth, and social classes within the community on collective management of forests. There are two key results. First, social parochialism is not a pre-requisite for collective management of forests. Moderate levels of social diversity are associated with low collective management, but at high levels of social diversity, collective management is high. Second, moderate wealth heterogeneity is beneficial; however, at high levels and in the presence of benefit heterogeneity, it decreases collective management. Similarly, benefit heterogeneity reduces collective management if wealth heterogeneity also exists. These results run counter to the dominant understanding of heterogeneity but may be seen as alternate explanations under a specific socioeconomic context. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The seasonal snow cover contributes significantly to the water resource in the Indian Himalayas, and snow density is one of the vital parameters in the determination of the hydrological potential of snow. The application of conventional methods for snow density retrieval using fully polarimetric SAR data is constrained by the properties of snow primarily due to the melt and frost cycles, as compared to fresh dry snow. The surface component of backscatter is significant in case of melt and frost. In the conventional decomposition based methods, the surface component is not considered for the inversion of permittivity, as proposed in this study. In this paper, we also propose a methodology for the estimation of snow density using bi-temporal fully polarimetric C-band RADARSAT-2 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. We utilize the relation between the differential modified Mueller matrix components, the attenuation constants, and the Fresnel transmission coefficients. The permittivity of snow is derived using the inversion of the Fresnel transmission coefficients which is used to determine the snow density using a state of the art empirical relation. The snow density estimates from the proposed method are compared with other methods based on coherency matrix decomposition and evaluated against in-situ measurements collected during a field campaign carried out in Dhundi in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India.
