Abstract

Over recent decades, research has shown an increasing interest in early modern Catholic missions in Asia as test-beds of cultural contact. This shift from a Eurocentric, expansionist view of missions to one that highlights non-European agents and the cultural particularities of non-European Christianities has also resulted in a specialization of scholarly discussions. A conference on Catholic missionaries in early modern Asia recently held in Rome brought together leading experts on different areas to encourage transregional dialogue on the entrenchment of missionaries in local societies. The author is one of the co-organizers of this conference. In this paper, she situates the conference within the field, recapitulates its principal results and suggests areas ripe for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2. Performance indicators for national libraries in Asia/Oceania: preliminary proposals based on a survey of Asia/Oceania libraries.

Abstract

This paper discusses the need for national libraries to evaluate their performance and measure their effectiveness. Although performance indicators for academic and public libraries are well developed and used, little has been done for national libraries. At the recommendation of the IFLA Standing Committee for National Libraries a survey on the use of performance indicators is being undertaken for national libraries in Asia/Oceania. The findings of the survey will provide a useful contribution towards the development of performance indicators for the national library and add to the corpus of published literature on national libraries in the Asia/Oceania region. . The questionnaire used in the study of performance indicators used by European national libraries has been adapted for this study. The availability of comparative data in Europe and Asia/Oceania will provide a basis for comparative study of the management of national libraries in these two regions. It is hoped that the data from the survey will enable a generic set of performance indicators to be developed, which can be used as a tool for evaluating the performance of National Libraries in Asia/Oceania and Europe. Abstract

The article reports on the panel "Grenzmissverständnisse in der Globalgeschichtsschreibung (ca. 1500-1900)" at the Deutscher Historikertag (Annual Meeting of the Verband der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands [VDH, German Historians' Association]), from September 28 to October 1, 2010, in Berlin. Several papers on the concepts of borders and frontiers in European imperialism and colonialism in Asia, Africa, and Australia, from the perspective of global history, were presented.
