The paper discusses the tendencies in education and science in the last three decades which are generally characterized as "academic capitalism". Its basic manifestations and the different interpretations attributed to it are outlined. The argument is that the realities of academic capitalism present clear-cut grounds against the theories of "logocracy", "new mandarin class", etc. Characteristic features of the Bulgarian version of academic capitalism are also described: excessive irrationality and one-sidedness.
