The purpose of this paper is to analyse the commitment of the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) to geographic education and specifically to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through the Geography Commission and the Geographic Education Committee, this organisation is developing various initiatives for the implementation of the SDGs in the Pan-American context. Methodologically, a documentary analysis of the writings of the PAIGH and specifically of the geographic education network was carried out. Among the main results, it can be seen that the documents and works analysed are aimed at developing the SDGs through geographic thinking, the use of new technologies and climate change. - Abstract
This paper identifies the key dimensions in the evaluation of a public investment project of environmental transformation carried out in Moravia neighborhood in Medellín, Colombia. The Sustainable Development Goals approach is adopted through a modified five-dimensional scale applied to 197 inhabitants of the area of influence. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation models were used to derive first and second order models that could be used to define the scale. From the model, the identification of appropriate variables that can effectively contribute to the recognition of sustainable development to optimize the destination of public resources, as well as the sustainability over time of the projects for a better design of public policies are derived. SUSTAINABLE development , *LITERATURE reviews , *SUSTAINABILITY , *SCIENCE publishing , *DURABILITY - Abstract
This review paper aims to analyze the academic perspectives with which the concept of sustainability has been approached in the fields of administration and organizational studies. Methodologically, it consists of a review of 130 documents published in 22 scientific journals recognized by Publindex-Minciencias in the organizational field and related disciplines in Colombia, focusing on the period 2010-2020. As a result, 28 thematic categories and qualitative analyses of the conceptual perspectives that underlie them are presented. It was identified that these concepts are used indiscriminately in the literature and that three thematic approaches coexist: 1) sustainability as a strategy for economic durability, 2) sustainability as a conscious economic developmental perspective and 3) sustainability as a sociocultural and political project of universal transformation. GEOGRAPHIC information systems , *ENVIRONMENTAL risk , *CLIMATE change , *SOCIAL problems , *HUMAN settlements , *ENVIRONMENTAL management - Abstract
Latin America shows an accelerated urbanization process and a development model that generate and intensify social and environmental problems. Added to these problems are the risks triggered by climate change that affect today's cities. In Argentina, its effects are manifested differentially over the regions, impacting cities and human settlements. In this scenario, this paper proposes to explore the environmental risk faced by Argentinean cities in a context of climate change from two dimensions: threat and resilience. For this, two synthetic indices were built using the Mean Index Coefficient methodology for each dimension and subsequently the results were articulated by defining risk categories. Results were spatially represented using a Geographic Information System. Gran Posadas, Corrientes, and Salta reach the most unfavorable situations following by Gran La Plata, Gran Mendoza, Gran San Juan, Gran Tucumán-Tafí Viejo, and the Buenos Aires counties. The importance of focusing on adaptation measures under the concept of urban resilience is highlighted. New questions arise from this work and invite further research whose results will allow progress towards sustainability and urban resilience by including them in local policies. SUSTAINABLE development , *ENVIRONMENTAL economics , *GREEN infrastructure , *ECONOMIC policy ,ARGENTINIAN economy - Abstract
In the aftermath of the financial crisis that broke out in 2008, new terms to talk about sustainable development started to emerge: the "green" economy and "green" growth. Some countries supported their usage and others did not. The literature witnessed the recrudescence of the debate on the relationship between economic activity and taking care of the environment, divided into three stances: degrowth advocates, "green" growth backers, and the growth-agnostics. This paper dives into the different "green" terms, paying special attention to the case of Argentina. Unlike in previous papers, which have analyzed country interventions in international forums, the methodology here was to search the web pages of the most relevant local players. The most traditional terms ("sustainable development") were strongly predominant, and the concepts of "green" economy or "green" growth were few and far between. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The paper presents an analysis linked to one of the sustainable energy alternatives that are currently being adopted with worldwide success, in order to improve the quality of electricity service, save natural resources, reduce losses and contribute to the reduction of CO emissions into the atmosphere. The results of a study related to an application of technological innovation to improve the quality of the electric service in an isolated community are presented, by the introduction of photovoltaic technology connected to the low voltage network of a group of 20 houses that were studied. The results of the study of charge and hourly energy consumption of dwellings are shown and an own methodology for the design of the photovoltaic technology connected to the low voltage grid of the houses studied is shown, with potential to avoid the energy consumption of The conventional network, with the possibility of improving the quality of the electric service, while reducing the amount of the electric bill and reducing losses. RENEWABLE energy sources , *ENERGY policy , *ENERGY development , *ELECTRIC power , *SUSTAINABLE development , *ELECTRIC power production - Abstract
In recent decades, renewable energies have become increasingly important at the global level, with a significant impact on the sustainable development of various nations. Although multiple papers have examined the efficiency of policies and instruments to promote renewable energy sources, the majority have disregarded the fact that the context in which policies are implemented determines how well they perform. This paper analyzes renewable energy development in the electricity market in Argentina, paying special mind to the contextual conditions in which the policies were designed and finding that in recent history, it is precisely these conditions that constitute the main reason why renewable energies have such a low degree of penetration in the electrical power system in Argentina. - Abstract
This paper emphasizes the importance of presenting environmental education plans and programs with special emphasis on the component of sustainable development. It is based on an analysis of international and national perspectives that have favored the enactment of useful legislative frameworks for the design of educational programs. The second part of the work presents an advance of the conclusions of an education project for environmental sustainability referred to the creation of habits of selective collection of plastic containers, designed by a higher education institution and a company in the recycling sector. - Abstract
Ocean acidification is a growing problem that affects global environment. Its effects are detectable now, putting the most extensive water resource on the planet at risk and influencing the climate changes that can be documented across the globe. This paper analyzes the protection of the sea as a measure to ensure a healthy environment for future generations, guaranteeing a better way of life for them. We present the different principles governing bioethics, and we establish their relationship with the processes of sustainable development and the increase of acidification in the ocean, which affects a large number of communities of scarce resources in the world. Social advertising is an essential resource in the success of the goals and scopes of Well Living and, therefore, of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. This paper analyzes its application, its meaning and how its efficacy could be achieved and confirmed. To this end, we present here cases in which education and entertainment, related to social communication, have achieved changes in attitudes and risk behaviors. In such cases, progress has been made in attaining development goals. Finally, we discuss the importance of having a theoretical and methodological basis that supports social campaigns and their products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ECONOMIC development , *SUSTAINABLE development , *INTERNATIONAL trade , *INTERNATIONAL economic integration , *REGIONAL cooperation , *COMMERCE - Abstract
This paper discusses some of the challenges related to integration and cooperation in Latin America: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a clear platform that involves every country in the region, as well as various actors, and trade negotiations in the twenty-first century, in particular, mega-regional agreements whose scopes are limited to a few countries. Latin America is currently exploring the possibilities of convergence and cooperation in a context of diverse geopolitical interests. This will require adopting a flexible and inclusive approach. The experiences of Asia and Africa in this arena will undoubtedly be relevant. Achieving convergence will be crucial to fostering cooperation and coordinating policies to respond to the challenges of globalization. The region will also have to find new resources and models for national and international funding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Mobility is the greatest challenge for human civilization. Objective: to contribute to the conceptual discussion of the topic in two of its basic dimensions: safety and sustainability. Methodology: the authors reviewed Spanish, English and Portuguese literature on the term mobility and its relationship with road safety in sustainable transportation. Books, reports and scientific papers from 2010 onward were reviewed. Likewise, 25 texts were identified which were used to produce argumentative syntheses. Results: being able to move safely and with sustainability has implications in the physical and mental health of individuals and populations. It is a right of the citizens, a constitutional obligation and the duty of the State. It is also a determinant of welfare and development with a defined paradigmatic and historical background related to the environmental, economic and social sustainability, which is threatened by the occupation of the soil, the concentration of people and the motorization of life. SUSTAINABLE development , *CLIMATE change , *BIOLOGICAL adaptation ,UNITED Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (1992) ,DEVELOPING countries environmental conditions - Abstract
Climate change, one of the main global risks humankind is currently facing, became a relevant issue on the international agenda in the last few decades. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), adopted in 1992, includes both mitigation and adaptation strategies; however, though both are considered equally important, adaptation has been historically relegated to a secondary role within the Convention. The paper first presents an overview of the trajectory of adaptation as a UNFCCC guideline, discusses its institutional evolution and the Convention’s financing mechanisms, and, finally, explores the relations between adaptation and development. The conclusions point to the insufficiency of the Convention with respect to the implementation of measures for adaptation to climate change, but highlight its relevant role as a scenario for debate, as a source of funding, and as a promoter of both national and subnational actions, especially in developing countries. SUSTAINABILITY , *SUSTAINABLE development , *ECOLOGICAL resilience , *HUMAN ecology , *ECOLOGICAL systems theory - Abstract
In sustainability research the range of social-ecological systems is so wide that many times the concept of sustainability can only have a real meaning if it is related to the particular system studied, bringing a variety of ways to understand sustainability that can, very frequently, be contradictory. Research about sustainability would not be able to theorize if each research work and paper is based on a different sustainability concept. This essay proposes a classification of socioecological systems in order to demonstrate how all of them can be analyzed under a sustainability concept. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
