1. Up Against the Clock: Migrating to LibGuides v2 on a Tight Timeline.

Abstract

During Fall semester 2015, Librarians at the United States Naval Academy were faced with the challenge of migrating to LibGuides version 2 and integrating LibAnswers with LibChat into their service offerings. Initially, the entire migration process was anticipated to take almost a full academic year; giving guide owners considerable time to update and prepare their guides. However, with the acquisition of the LibAnswers module, library staff shortened the migration timeline considerably to ensure both products went live on the version 2 platform at the same time. The expedited implementation timeline forced the ad hoc implementation teams to prioritize completion of the tasks that were necessary for the system to remain functional after the upgrade. This paper provides an overview of the process the staff at the Nimitz Library followed for a successful implementation on a short timeline and highlights transferable lessons learned during the process. Consistent communication of expectations with stakeholders and prioritization of tasks were essential to the successful completion of the project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article focuses on the announcement made by the Association of College and Research Libraries that it is offering Student Paper Awards for its 13th National Conference "Sailing into the Future--Charting out Destiny," to be held in Baltimore, Maryland on March 29 to April 1, 2007. The Student Paper Awards will be awarded for research papers authored by library school students. Papers should be 1,800 to 2,500 words and should be scholarly, well organized, clearly written, and rigorously argued.

Abstract

The article discusses the 48th Annual Rare Books and Manuscripts (RBMS) Preconference held in Baltimore, Maryland from June 19 to June 22, 2007. The topic of the conference was the storage and collection of ephemera. Ephemera includes handbills, broadsides, and circulars. The preconference featured six plenary sessions, 12 short papers, and nine seminars focused on different aspects of ephemera in libraries, museums, and archives. The keynote address was given by Michael Twyman, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading, England. The article also discusses each plenary session from the preconference.

4. Joining forces to enlighten the research process.

Abstract

The article highlights the collaboration between Peabody Library and the Writing Studio of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee to enlighten students about the research process, particularly in locating and evaluating scholarly information, under the Human and Organizational Development's (HOD) Applied Human Development course. The project offers subject-specific workshops to aid students with their research paper assignment via library resources, use of the American Psychological Association (APA) style and inclusion of research into the writing process. Marketing of the concept includes publicizing of the service on Web sites, article writing for the Writing Studio's newsletter, and creation of bookmarks.

Abstract

The article provides information on recommended dining locations and nightlife options near the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland, in anticipation of the 2007 Association of Research Librarians (ACRL) National Conference. In addition to recommendations for restaurants within hotels, the author suggests nearby casual spots for sandwiches and seafood. Phillips Harborplace and several comedy clubs are recommended in the Inner Harbor area. The Baltimore Convention Center's website, the Baltimore tourism page, and the City Paper reviews are listed as resources for learning more.

6. Cartographic Users Advisory Council (CUAC) 2004/2005.

Abstract

This article reports that the Cartographic Users Advisory Council (CUAC) held its regular meeting from May 6, 2004 to May 7, 2004 at the Suitland, Maryland offices of the U.S. Bureau of the Census. At the 2004 meeting, John Ebert, Head of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress (LC) offered LC as a venue for a 2005 conference on map and geospatial issues, to be planned by CUAC. It is informed that the Map and Geographic Information Collections in Transition conference was held from May 12, 2005 to May 13, 2005, in the Library of Congress' Mumford Room. Approximately 190 registrants, vendors and speakers attended the conference. Speakers from commercial agencies, academic institutions, and government agency offices presented sessions ranging from "The Future of the Paper Map" to "Data, Copyright, and Access Issues." Because the topics were so timely and relevant, and the networking opportunities so plentiful, much interest was voiced in having another conference in five to seven years.

7. Johns Hopkins to pilot heritage conversion program.

Abstract

The article offers information about the pilot program of Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Sheridan Libraries for post-doctoral fellows in heritage conservation science in Baltimore, Maryland. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded JHU $792,000 to launch a heritage conservation fellows that will provide opportunities for the research fellows to collaborate with faculty and students in the JHU Whiting School of Engineering's department of materials science, the JHU Museums, and area institutions such as historical societies. It was recommended by internationally recognized conservators and applied research scientists in April 2008 to develop a detailed set of specific proposals to address the research/ development activities needed to conserve the nation's book and paper materials.
