The paper describes the FPGA implementation of a novel position evaluation algorithm based on the time difference of arrival (TDOA) principle that combines the characteristics of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (OFDM) symbol with the properties of the Zadoff-Chu mathematical sequences. The resulting system is highly scalable and its characteristics are easily adaptable to different operating scenarios. The algorithm has been implemented using the Stratix IV-E EP4SGX70HF35C3 FPGA, requiring about 112k bit of memory and less than 44k logic elements of which about 16k are registers. The paper describes the algorithm and its FPGA implementation along with experimental results validating the system performance even in the presence of multipath interferences and showing precision in target position estimation that is better than 2 cm. Piecewise affine (PWA) systems are attractive models that can represent various hybrid systems with local affine subsystems and polyhedral regions due to their universal approximation properties. The identification problem of PWA systems amounts to estimating the number of subsystems, parameters of each subsystem, and the corresponding polyhedral partitions via state-input vectors. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to address the online identification problem of continuous-time PWA systems in state-space form. Specifically, an online active mode recognition algorithm and a generalized integral concurrent learning identifier are presented to acquire the number of subsystems, the switching sequence, and the parameter of each subsystem. In addition, we develop the optimization problem for the polyhedral partition estimation, which is solved by using the estimated switching sequence and subsystem parameters. Piecewise affine (PWA) models are attractive frameworks that can represent various hybrid systems with local affine submodels and polyhedral regions due to their universal approximation properties. The PWA identification problem amounts to estimating both the submodel parameters and the polyhedral partitions from data. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to address the identification problem of PWA systems such that the number of submodels, parameters of submodels, and the polyhedral partitions are obtained. In particular, a cluster-based algorithm is designed to acquire the number of submodels, the initial labeled data set, and initial parameters corresponding to each submodel. Additionally, we develop a modified self-training support vector machine algorithm to simultaneously identify the hyperplanes and parameter of each submodel with the ouputs of the cluster-based algorithm. The proposed algorithm is computationally efficient for region estimation and able to accomplish this task with only a small quantity of classified regression vectors. This paper studies consensus problems of multi-agent systems with binary-valued communications. Different from most existing works, the agents considered in this paper can only get binary-valued observations of its neighbors’ states with random noises. A consensus algorithm is proposed: first, each agent estimates its neighbors’ states by the recursive projection algorithm; then, each agent designs the control timely based on the estimates. It is proved that the estimates of the states can converge to the true states with a faster convergence rate than that in the parameter estimation. Moreover, the states of the agents can achieve mean-square consensus, and the corresponding consensus speed can achieve $O(1/t)$ under certain conditions. This paper presents a generic foreground calibration algorithm that estimates and corrects memoryless nonlinear impairments in both single channel and time-interleaved analog-to-digital converters (TIADCs), and which is capable of correcting for amplifier nonlinearity, comparator offsets, and capacitance mismatch for each channel. It operates by generating, and then using, a look-up table which maps raw ADC output decision vectors to linearized output. For TIADCs, the algorithm also uses information gained during the calibration phase to estimate timing and gain mismatches among the sub-ADCs. The problem of selecting an appropriate timing reference so as to relax the requirements on the time-skew correction circuitry is statistically analyzed, as is the corresponding impact on manufacturing yield. Accordingly, a new method is proposed having superior performance; for example, in the case of an eight sub-ADC TIADC system, the proposed scheme reduces the time skew correction requirement by 44% compared with conventional methods. The architecture is instrumented with some additional circuitry to facilitate built-in self-test, allowing manufacturing test time and cost reductions. Stereo vision is a methodology to obtain depth in a scene based on the stereo image pair. In this paper, we introduce a discrete wavelet transform (DWT)-based methodology for a state-of-the-art disparity estimation algorithm that resulted in significant performance improvement in terms of speed and computational complexity. In the initial stage of the proposed algorithm, we apply DWT to the input images, reducing the number of samples to be processed in subsequent stages by 50%, thereby decreasing computational complexity and improving processing speed. Subsequently, the architecture has been designed based on this proposed methodology and prototyped on a Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA. The performance of the proposed methodology has been evaluated against four standard Middlebury Benchmark image pairs viz. Tsukuba, Venus, Teddy, and Cones. The proposed methodology results in the improvement of about 44.4% cycles per frame, 52% frames/s, and 61.5% and 59.6% LUT and register utilization, respectively, compared with state-of-the-art designs. Digital post-distortion is becoming an increasingly attractive solution to compensate for the non-linearities of RF receivers implemented in deep submicron CMOS technologies. A very promising technique which provides flexibility and robustness is the frequency spreading based digital post-distortion. This paper focuses on the analysis of this approach for wideband receivers and its main limitations, such as the anti-alias filter (AAF) impact. As a matter of fact, distortions filtered by the AAF can degrade the correction performance. To overcome this problem, a novel solution based on mimicking the AAF frequency response in the digital domain is proposed. Aspects regarding the estimation and the algorithm convergence are also studied: the noise effect and the choice of the free frequency band. Furthermore, two other techniques are developed to improve the modeling and the correction of the memory effect using, respectively, a bank of filters and two-step architecture. The proposed techniques are demonstrated by simulations and measurements on a multi-channel receiver suited for DVB-T applications. This paper concerns a spectral estimation problem in which we want to find a spectral density function that is consistent with estimated second-order statistics. It is an inverse problem admitting multiple solutions, and selection of a solution can be based on prior functions. We show that the problem is well-posed when formulated in a parametric fashion, and that the solution parameter depends continuously on the prior function. In this way, we are able to obtain a smooth parametrization of admissible spectral densities. Based on this result, the problem is reparametrized via a bijective change of variables out of a numerical consideration, and then a continuation method is used to compute the unique solution parameter. Numerical aspects, such as convergence of the proposed algorithm and certain computational procedures are addressed. A simple example is provided to show the effectiveness of the algorithm. We discuss a stochastic algorithm to design tuning controllers for cryptographic True Random Number Generators, compliant to NIST recommendations, as an effective low-complexity solution to counteract entropy variability in integrated architectures implementing tunable entropy sources. Taking as a reference the min-entropy concept, we discussed the proposal from both the theoretical and hardware design points of view, validating claims with proofs and experiments. Depending on the target accuracy, the proposed architecture is scalable, and its profitable use in TRNG design strongly depends on the kind of core entropy sources taken into account. Furthermore, we show that the low-complexity entropy measurement techniques exploited in this proposal can be used to design a legitimate alternative to the Adaptive Proportion Health Test recommended in the NIST 800.90B publication. This paper is concerned with a general class of distributed constrained optimization problems over a multiagent network, where the global objective function is represented by the sum of all local objective functions. Each agent in the network only knows its own local objective function, and is restricted to a global nonempty closed convex set. We discuss the scenario where the communication of the whole multiagent network is expressed as a sequence of time-varying general unbalanced directed graphs. The directed graphs are required to be uniformly jointly strongly connected and the weight matrices are only row-stochastic. To collaboratively deal with the optimization problems, existing distributed methods mostly require the communication graph to be fixed or balanced, which is impractical and hardly inevitable. In contrast, we propose a new distributed projection subgradient algorithm which is applicable to the time-varying general unbalanced directed graphs and does not need each agent to know its in-neighbors’ out-degree. When the objective functions are convex and Lipschitz continuous, it is proved that the proposed algorithm exactly converges to the optimal solution. In this paper, we study the interacting multiple model (IMM) estimator for networked control systems with packet loss but without packet acknowledgment (ACK). The ACK is a signal sent by the actuator to inform the estimator of whether control packets are lost or not. A system with ACK is usually called a transmission control protocol (TCP) like system; otherwise, it is called a user datagram protocol (UDP) like system. We show that the stability of the IMM estimator for UDP-like systems is determined by the observation packet arrival rate (p.a.r.) and is independent of the control p.a.r. and control inputs. The IMM estimator is stable if the observation p.a.r. is greater than a critical value. We show that this critical value is the same as the critical value for the stability of the optimal estimator for its corresponding TCP-like system. If control inputs eventually tend to zero, the error covariance of the IMM estimator converges to that of the optimal estimator for TCP-like systems. We characterize the impact of the control/observation p.a.r. and the control input on estimation performance. Finally, we prove that the average estimation performance of the IMM estimator approximates that of the optimal estimator within a finite bound, and is superior to that of the linear minimum mean square error estimator. A one minimum only decoder for Trellis-EMS (OMO T-EMS) and for Trellis-Min-max (OMO T-MM) is proposed in this paper. In this novel approach, we avoid computing the second minimum in messages of the check node processor, and propose efficient estimators to infer the second minimum value. By doing so, we greatly reduce the complexity and at the same time improve latency and throughput of the derived architectures compared to the existing implementations of EMS and Min-max decoders. This solution has been applied to various NB-LDPC codes constructed over different Galois fields and with different degree distributions showing in all cases negligible performance loss compared to the ideal EMS and Min-max algorithms. In addition, two complete decoders for OMO T-EMS and OMO T-MM were implemented for the (837,726) NB-LDPC code over GF(32) for comparison proposals. A 90 nm CMOS process was applied, achieving a throughput of 711 Mbps and 818 Mbps respectively at a clock frequency of 250 MHz, with an area of 19.02 mm^2 and 16.10 mm^2 after place and route. To the best knowledge of the authors, the proposed decoders have higher throughput and area-time efficiency than any other solution for high-rate NB-LDPC codes with high Galois field order. This paper generalizes the well-known covariance intersection algorithm for distributed estimation and information fusion of random vectors. Our focus will be on partially correlated random vectors. This is motivated by the restriction of the standard covariance intersection algorithm, which treats all random vectors with arbitrary cross correlations and the restriction of the classical Kalman filter, which requires complete knowledge of the cross correlations. We first give a result to characterize the conservatism of the standard covariance intersection algorithm. We then generalize the covariance intersection algorithm to two random vectors with a given correlation coefficient bound and show in what sense the resulting covariance bound is tight. Finally, we generalize the notion of correlation coefficient bound to multiple random vectors and provide a covariance intersection algorithm for this general case. In this paper, source localization by a network of primitive binary sensors under various imperfections are studied. Detailed analysis and mathematical modeling of imperfect binary sensors are presented. Imperfections include sensor failures of two types, drifting, uncertainty, and heterogeneity in binary sensor trigger thresholds, presence of noise, and nonradial symmetry of sensing ranges. Theoretical results, including asymptotical convergence, are established, in particular in the presence of substantial outliers due to sensor failure and large noise. Generalized eigendecomposition problem has been widely employed in many signal processing applications. In this paper, we propose a unified and self-stabilizing algorithm, which is able to extract the first principal and minor generalized eigenvectors of a matrix pencil of two vector sequences adaptively. Furthermore, we extend the proposed algorithm to extract multiple generalized eigenvectors. The performance analysis shows that only the desired equilibrium point of the proposed algorithm is stable and all others are (unstable) repellers or saddle points. Convergence analysis based on the deterministic discrete-time approach shows that, for a step size within a certain range, the norm of the principal/minor state vector converges to a fixed value that relates to the corresponding principal/minor generalized eigenvalue. Thus, the proposed algorithm is a generalized eigenpairs (eigenvectors and eigenvalues) extraction algorithm. Several sparsity-constrained algorithms, such as orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) or the Frank–Wolfe (FW) algorithm, with sparsity constraints work by iteratively selecting a novel atom to add to the current nonzero set of variables. This selection step is usually performed by computing the gradient and then by looking for the gradient component with maximal absolute entry. This step can be computationally expensive especially for large-scale and high-dimensional data. In this paper, we aim at accelerating these sparsity-constrained optimization algorithms by exploiting the key observation that, for these algorithms to work, one only needs the coordinate of the gradient’s top entry. Hence, we introduce algorithms based on greedy methods and randomization approaches that aim at cheaply estimating the gradient and its top entry. Another of our contribution is to cast the problem of finding the best gradient entry as a best-arm identification in a multiarmed bandit problem. Owing to this novel insight, we are able to provide a bandit-based algorithm that directly estimates the top entry in a very efficient way. Theoretical observations stating that the resulting inexact FW or OMP algorithms act, with high probability, similar to their exact versions are also given. We have carried out several experiments showing that the greedy deterministic and the bandit approaches we propose can achieve an acceleration of an order of magnitude while being as efficient as the exact gradient when used in algorithms, such as OMP, FW, or CoSaMP. This paper describes the development of an energy-efficient amplify-and-forward distributed estimation scheme using realistic amplifier models. Specifically, a novel algorithm is presented that enables distributed estimation in the presence of amplifier compression resulting from the energy-efficient but non-linear class AB operation. In this system, a digital predistortion scheme is utilized to fit the amplifier at each sensor to a mathematically tractable, soft compression function that roughly mimics the compression region of the amplifier. It is shown both analytically and via simulation that using this scheme has two benefits over linear amplifier operation: improved transmitter efficiency by operating the amplifier in compression, and reduced sensitivity to heavy-tailed distributions due to the soft saturation. Stereo vision is widely deployed on robots and drones to enable depth estimation at a low cost. The combination of lightweight deep neural network (DNN) and cost volumes algorithm is proved to possess the advantages of both high depth estimation accuracy and speed. However, currently there is no accelerator architecture compatible with both efficient DNN inference and cost generation algorithms such as stereo matching. This work proposes a stereo vision accelerator called Dadu-eye, dedicated to real-time processing of high-resolution image streams. The proposed architecture adopts a pipelined hardware design with the techniques of operation approximation and scheduling-level optimization. First, a cost estimation block is designed to generate cost volumes from both luminance and color information. Second, a super pipelined multiplication and accumulation array with a row scan-based fused-layer convolution scheduling is proposed to perform the encoding and decoding neural network efficiently. Finally, an optical flow block is designed and cooperates with the array to approximately predict half of the frames’ depth to achieve real-time (30fps) processing on 1080p view. Based on the SMIC 40 nm CMOS process, this stereo vision accelerator achieves 5.3 TOPS/W power efficiency and significantly reduces 81% off-chip memory access. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Average consensus is a widely used algorithm for distributed computing and control, where all the agents in the network constantly communicate and update their states in order to achieve an agreement. This approach could result in an undesirable disclosure of information on the initial state of an agent to the other agents. In this paper, we propose a privacy preserving average consensus algorithm to guarantee the privacy of the initial state and asymptotic consensus on the exact average of the initial values, by adding and subtracting random noises to the consensus process. We characterize the mean square convergence rate of our consensus algorithm and derive the covariance matrix of the maximum likelihood estimate on the initial state. Moreover, we prove that our proposed algorithm is optimal in the sense that it does not disclose any information more than necessary to achieve the average consensus. Recently, several convergence rate results for Douglas-Rachford splitting and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) have been presented in the literature. In this paper, we show global linear convergence rate bounds for Douglas-Rachford splitting and ADMM under strong convexity and smoothness assumptions. We further show that the rate bounds are tight for the class of problems under consideration for all feasible algorithm parameters. For problems that satisfy the assumptions, we show how to select step-size and metric for the algorithm that optimize the derived convergence rate bounds. In a recently published paper, an estimation algorithm of carrier frequency offset (CFO) with I/Q mismatch was proposed. Errors in the derivation of the algorithm show that its precision can only be asserted in the case of relatively small I/Q mismatch. The identification of nonlinear spatiotemporal dynamical systems given by partial differential equations has attracted a lot of attention in the past decades. Several methods, such as searching principle-based algorithms, partially linear kernel methods, and coupled lattice methods, have been developed to address the identification problems. However, most existing methods have some restrictions on sampling processes in that the sampling intervals should usually be very small and uniformly distributed in spatiotemporal domains. These are actually not applicable for some practical applications. In this paper, to tackle this issue, a novel kernel-based learning algorithm named integral least square regularization regression (ILSRR) is proposed, which can be used to effectively achieve accurate derivative estimation for nonlinear functions in the time domain. With this technique, a discretization method named inverse meshless collocation is then developed to realize the dimensional reduction of the system to be identified. Thereafter, with this novel inverse meshless collocation model, the ILSRR, and a multiple-kernel-based learning algorithm, a multistep identification method is systematically proposed to address the identification problem of spatiotemporal systems with pointwise nonuniform observations. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication in combination with massive multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) enables high-bandwidth data transmission to multiple users in the same time-frequency resource. The strong path loss of wave propagation at such high frequencies necessitates accurate channel state information to ensure reliable data transmission. We propose a novel channel estimation algorithm called BEAmspace CHannel EStimation (BEACHES), which leverages the fact that wave propagation at mmWave frequencies is predominantly directional. BEACHES adaptively denoises the channel vectors in the beamspace domain using an adaptive shrinkage procedure that relies on Stein’s unbiased risk estimator (SURE). Simulation results for line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS mmWave channels reveal that BEACHES performs on par with state-of-the-art channel estimation methods while requiring orders-of-magnitude lower complexity. To demonstrate the effectiveness of BEACHES in practice, we develop a very large-scale integration (VLSI) architecture and provide field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation results. Our results show that adaptive channel denoising can be performed at high throughput and in a hardware-friendly manner for massive MU-MIMO mmWave systems with hundreds of antennas. We present a 6DOF magnetic tracking system based on a low-complexity algorithm, operating with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) orientation estimation and regression functions formed with simulated data sets, capable of running using only a single microcontroller unit (MCU), for use in low-complexity wearable and wireless systems. A prototype based on a commercial magnetometer and IMU, a Cortex-M4 MCU was implemented and tested in both static and dynamic conditions, using a VICON motion tracking system as reference. Static and dynamic spatial accuracy performance is 2.6mm and 5.4mm respectively, after applying a calibration procedure based on a two layers Neural Network (NN) and a measured data set. Comparison with the state-of-the-art, supported by a defined Figure-of-Merit (FoM) show excellent performance compared to commercial and research systems in a low-complexity and portable solution. Recently there were research works on multi-task estimation. However, there exists an issue that nodes may suffer from malicious attacks when sending data in the adversarial multi-task network environment. To address this issue, we propose a secure distributed information sharing algorithm based on attack detection. In our work, via determining an adaptive threshold, a distributed detection algorithm based on the correlation between tasks and a safe multi-task diffusion least mean square (SM-DLMS) algorithm are proposed, which not only reduce communication costs but also effectively decrease the impact of attacks. We also theoretically analyze the stability performance of the proposed SM-DLMS algorithm. In this paper, we propose a systematization of the (discrete-time) Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) theory. We gather all available UKF variants in the literature, present corrections to theoretical inconsistencies, and provide a tool for the construction of new UKF's in a consistent way. This systematization is done, mainly, by revisiting the concepts of Sigma-Representation, Unscented Transformation (UT), Scaled Unscented Transformation (SUT), UKF, and Square-Root Unscented Kalman Filter (SRUKF). Inconsistencies are related to 1) matching the order of the transformed covariance and cross-covariance matrices of both the UT and the SUT; 2) multiple UKF definitions; 3) issue with some reduced sets of sigma points described in the literature; 4) the conservativeness of the SUT; 5) the scaling effect of the SUT on both its transformed covariance and cross-covariance matrices; and 6) possibly ill-conditioned results in SRUKF's. With the proposed systematization, the symmetric sets of sigma points in the literature are formally justified, and we are able to provide new consistent variations for UKF's, such as the Scaled SRUKF's and the UKF's composed by the minimum number of sigma points. In this paper, the challenging issue of estimating virtual unmodeled dynamics is addressed. A novel estimation algorithm based on historical data and the output of low-order approximation models for virtual un-modeled dynamics is presented. In particular, the virtual un-modeled dynamics are decomposed into known and unknown parts, where only the unknown part is to be estimated. The method effectively avoids the need to use the unknown control input directly, and enables the estimation of the un-modeled dynamics with a relatively simple algorithm. Moreover, it is shown that the proposed algorithm overcomes the difficulty in obtaining the control solutions caused by the fact that the controller input is embedded in un-modeled dynamics. It has been widely acknowledged that learning- and reconstruction-based super-resolution (SR) methods are effective to generate a high-resolution (HR) image from a single low-resolution (LR) input. However, learning-based methods are prone to introduce unexpected details into resultant HR images. Although reconstruction-based methods do not generate obvious artifacts, they tend to blur fine details and end up with unnatural results. In this paper, we propose a new SR framework that seamlessly integrates learning- and reconstruction-based methods for single image SR to: 1) avoid unexpected artifacts introduced by learning-based SR and 2) restore the missing high-frequency details smoothed by reconstruction-based SR. This integrated framework learns a single dictionary from the LR input instead of from external images to hallucinate details, embeds nonlocal means filter in the reconstruction-based SR to enhance edges and suppress artifacts, and gradually magnifies the LR input to the desired high-quality SR result. The Expectation Maximization algorithm can be used to estimate Kalman filter parameter matrices. This requires smoother results and typically the Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother is used for this purpose. If either of the state transition or plant noise matrices require estimation, a sequence of single time-step smoother cross-covariance matrices, based on the Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother formulation, are also required. The modified Bryson-Frazier smoother could be used as the smoother for the Expectation Maximization algorithm, but to estimate the state transition or plant noise matrix, this smoother would first need a method to generate the sequence of single time-step smoother cross-covariance matrices based on the modified Bryson-Frazier formulation. This paper develops an expression for these modified Bryson-Frazier cross-covariance matrices, thus allowing the modified Bryson-Frazier smoother to be substituted for the Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother in the Expectation Maximization algorithm. The modified Bryson-Frazier smoother formulation requires inversion only of filter innovation matrices, which are generally much smaller than state error covariance matrices, which allows both greater computational speed and better numerical accuracy due to smaller matrix size. A novel single-channel blind source separation (SCBSS) algorithm is presented. The proposed algorithm yields at least three benefits of the SCBSS solution: 1) resemblance of a stereo signal concept given by one microphone; 2) independent of initialization and a priori knowledge of the sources; and 3) it does not require iterative optimization. The separation process consists of two steps: 1) estimation of source characteristics, where the source signals are modeled by the autoregressive process and 2) construction of masks using only the single-channel mixture. A new pseudo-stereo mixture is formulated by weighting and time-shifting the original single-channel mixture. This creates an artificial mixing system whose parameters will be estimated through our proposed weighted complex 2-D histogram. In this paper, we derive the separability of the proposed mixture model. Conditions required for unique mask construction based on maximum likelihood are also identified. Finally, experimental testing on both synthetic and real-audio sources is conducted to verify that the proposed algorithm yields superior performance and is computationally very fast compared with existing methods. In this paper, we propose a stochastic model to describe how search service providers charge client companies based on users' queries for the keywords related to these companies' ads by using certain advertisement assignment strategies. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize the long-term average revenue for the service provider under each client's long-term average budget constraint and design an online algorithm which captures the stochastic properties of users' queries and click-through behaviors. We solve the optimization problem by making connections to scheduling problems in wireless networks, queueing theory and stochastic networks. Unlike prior models, we do not assume that the number of query arrivals is known. Due to the stochastic nature of the arrival process considered here, either temporary “free” service, i.e., service above the specified budget (which we call “overdraft”) or under-utilization of the budget (which we call “underdraft”) is unavoidable. We prove that our online algorithm can achieve a revenue that is within O(\epsilon) of the optimal revenue while ensuring that the overdraft or underdraft is O(1/\epsilon), where \epsilon can be arbitrarily small. With a view towards practice, we can show that one can always operate strictly under the budget. In addition, we extend our results to a click-through rate maximization model and also show how our algorithm can be modified to handle non-stationary query arrival processes and clients with short-term contracts.
