Chaotic image encryption is widely used in the field of information security. This paper proposes a novel chaotic image encryption method with spiral-transform-based fractal sorting matrix (STFSM). First of all, the theory of STFSM with good scrambling effect is introduced, which has good irregularity and iterative. Then, the iterative algorithm and calculation example of STFSM are introduced. STFSM can be used as the map of spatial location transformations to implement the design of image encryption. Based on the complete STFSM theory and iterative algorithm, a chaotic image cryptosystem based on STFSM is proposed to achieve a good image encryption process. To test the security of the proposed algorithm, security tests and analyses such as entropy analysis, correlation analysis, resistance to differential attacks analysis, and robustness analysis are used for the proposed algorithm. The experimental analysis illustrates that the algorithm has a better encryption effect, whether using conventional tests or the attacks simulations described in this paper and can also effectively resist the attacks. Diffusion-driven instabilities with pattern formation may occur in a network of identical, regularly-spaced, and resistively-coupled cells if and only if the uncoupled cell is poised on a locally-active and stable operating point in the Edge of Chaos domain. This manuscript presents the simplest ever-reported two-cell neural network, combining together only 7 two-terminal components, namely 2 batteries, 3 resistors, and 2 volatile NbOx memristive threshold switches from NaMLab, and subject to diffusion-driven instabilities with the concurrent emergence of Turing patterns. Very remarkably, this is the first time an homogeneous cellular medium, with no other dynamic element than 2 locally-active memristors, hence the attribute all-memristor coined to address it in this paper, is found to support complex phenomena. The destabilization of the homogeneous solution occurs in this second-order two-cell array if and only if the uncoupled cell circuit parameters are chosen from the Edge of Chaos domain. A deep circuit- and system-theoretic investigation, including linearization analysis and phase portrait investigation, provides a comprehensive picture for the local and global dynamics of the bio-inspired network, revealing how a theory-assisted approach may guide circuit design with inherently non-linear memristive devices. This paper aims to refine and expand the theoretical and application framework of higher-dimensional digital chaotic system (HDDCS). Topological mixing for HDDCS is strictly proved theoretically at first. Topological mixing implies Devaney’s definition of chaos in a compact space, but not vice versa. Therefore, the proof of topological mixing promotes the theoretical research of HDDCS. Then, a general design method for constructing HDDCS via loop-state contraction algorithm is given. The construction of the iterative function uncontrolled by random sequences (hereafter called iterative function) is the starting point of this research. On this basis, this paper put forward a general design method to solve the construction problem of HDDCS, and several examples illustrate the effectiveness and feasibility of this method. The adjacency matrix corresponding to the designed HDDCS is used to construct the chaotic Echo State Network (ESN) for predicting Mackey-Glass time series. Since chaotic cryptography has a long-term problem of dynamic degradation, this paper presents proof that chaotic systems resist dynamic degradation through theoretical analysis. Based on this proof, a novel one-dimensional two-parameter with a wide-range system mixed coupled map lattice model (TWMCML) is given. The evaluation of TWMCML shows that the system has the characteristics of strong chaos, high sensitivity, broader parameter ranges and wider chaos range, which helps to enhance the security of chaotic sequences. Based on the excellent performance of TWMCML, it is applied to the newly proposed encryption algorithm. The algorithm realizes double protection of private images under the premise of ensuring efficiency and safety. First, the important information of the image is extracted by edge detection technology. Then the important area is scrambled by the three-dimensional bit-level coupled XOR method. Finally, the global image is more fully confused by the dynamic index diffusion formula. The simulation experiment verified the effectiveness of the algorithm for grayscale and color images. Neuromorphic computing can solve computationally hard problems with energy efficiencies unattainable for von Neumann architectures. A locally-active memristor, which possesses the capability to amplify infinitesimal fluctuations in energy and can be used to generate neuromorphic behaviors, is a natural candidate for constructing an electronic equivalent of biological neurons. This paper identifies some unknown neuromorphic dynamics of the Chua corsage memristor (CCM), and shows that the CCM, when biased at the edge of chaos domain, can exhibit rich dynamics of biological neurons. Using Chua’s theories of local activity and edge of chaos, we demonstrate that under the destabilizing of the input voltage and the circuit parameters (inductance or capacitance), two CCM-based circuits can produce thirteen types of neuromorphic behaviors either on, or near the edge of chaos domain via supercritical or subcritical Hopf bifurcation. In addition, we give the conditions to test the edge of chaos of the CCM and the CCM-based circuit only by using the poles and the zero of their admittance functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regarding as a basic circuit component with special nonlinearity, memristor has been widely applied in chaotic circuits and neuromorphic circuits. However, discrete memristor (DM) has not been received much attention, yet. To this end, this paper reports a general DM model and its unified mapping model. Using the general DM model, four representations of DMs are given and their pinched hysteresis loops are exhibited. Based on the unified DM mapping model, four two-dimensional (2D) DM maps are generated and their parameter-relied and initials-relied behaviors are explored using multiple numerical measures. The results demonstrate that all the four 2D DM maps can generate hyperchaos with coexisting bi-stable or memristor initial-boosted behavior, and their sequences have excellent performance indictors. A hardware device is constructed to implement these maps and the analog voltage signals are experimentally acquired. Moreover, pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs) are designed using these DM maps and the test results show that the generated pseudo-random numbers (PRNs) have high randomness. The 555 timer IC is a well-known integrated circuit having been widely used as a pulse generator. We propose a circuit containing a single 555 IC, an LED, an inductor, two capacitors, and three resistors that exhibits chaos. The IC serves as a hysteretic switch causing the system to be alternately attracted to each of two stable equilibria. Ours appears to be the first chaotic circuit governed by piecewise-linear equations that have stable but no unstable equilibria. Also unique is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions resulting only from a square-root map. This arises from the grazing impact of two voltages. The circuit is also unusual in exhibiting periodic orbits with a Farey tree structure and a transition to chaos via a period-adding cascade. This and other bifurcations seen experimentally are in agreement with those of the governing three-dimensional ODEs with hysteretic conditions. Inclusion of three extra resistors in the circuit lowers the characteristic frequency so that the bifurcations can be detected via the LED without the need of an oscilloscope. Two generalized flux-controlled memristors are applied for hyperchaos generation, and following a four-dimensional hyperchaotic oscillator is constructed. The applied two memristors share a common internal control variable. The new hyperchaotic oscillator exhibits complex dynamics including coexisting chaos and attractor merging. A single constant can realize offset boosting revising the oscillation distribution in phase space. Meanwhile, an amplitude knob rescales the variable making it convenient to construct an analog circuit. The existence of periodic windows in the parameter space is a common feature of nonlinear systems capable to produce chaotic behavior. Detection of positions of periodic windows is important both from the theoretical and practical points of view. In this work, a systematic method to detect periodic windows in bifurcation diagrams is proposed. The search method is a combination of the trajectory monitoring approach to find unstable periodic orbits and the continuation method to calculate positions of periodic windows. The method is applied to the Chua’s circuit with a smooth nonlinearity. It is shown that the proposed method outperforms standard methods to find periodic windows in bifurcation diagrams.
