Ultradense heterogeneous networks (HetNets) are emerging as an inevitable approach to tackle the capacity crunch in cellular networks. However, imbalanced load among small and macrocells and poor resource utilization as a consequence in HetNets remains a long-standing problem. This paper addresses this problem by presenting a solution for maximization of coverage and capacity while minimizing load imbalance among macro and small cells. Most recent studies on the topic focus on either optimization of coverage, capacity or load, or a combination of two of these three intertwined objectives. We formulate the optimization problem as a function of two hard parameters namely antenna tilt and transmit power, and a soft parameter, cell individual offset, that affect the coverage, capacity, and load directly. The resulting solution is a combination of the otherwise conflicting coverage and capacity optimization (CCO) and load balancing (LB) self-organizing network (SON) functions. In the presented joint CCO-LB solution, a conflict free operation of CCO and LB is ensured by designing a novel load aware user association methodology and resolving the effects of shadowing on coverage probability using stochastic approximation. The problem is proven to be nonconvex and is solved using genetic algorithm, sequential quadratic programming, and pattern search algorithms. The proposed CCO-LB solution is compared against two recently proposed CCO and CCO-LB solutions in the literature. The hidden terminal problem degrades the uplink system throughput of wireless local area network seriously. In this paper, we propose the optimum allocation (OA) scheme of the location-based virtual sector (VS) method, which solves the hidden terminal problem without massive overheads like request-to-send and clear-to-send (RTS/CTS) packets. The VS method forms sectors virtually to make short-distance mobile terminal (MT) groups using MTs’ location information. In the group, all MTs can sense the transmission of all other MTs. In the proposed method, rough time slot control is implemented for intersector control, which does not need a highly functional centralized controller. The proposal OA scheme of the VS method improves the fairness among MTs by optimizing active periods of VS according to the number of MTs in each VS. By computer simulations, we show that the proposed method can increase the system throughput from the RTS/CTS and improve fairness among MTs even in the condition that positioning error is 1/10 of cell radius. Traffic offloading via device-to-device communications is expected to play a major role to meet the exponential data traffic growth in wireless networks. In this paper, we focus on the problem of user capacity maximization in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks with device-to-device cooperation, where a large number of users in a given geographical area request common data content, such as video on demand streaming, with strict quality of service guarantees. We aim at finding the best strategy for delivering the content either over long range connectivity from the access points or short range connectivity from peer mobile terminals while meeting a target rate per served user. We formulate the multiuser resource management problem as an optimization problem including traffic offloading and channel allocation considering a very high user density reaching up to 1.75 users per square meter. We extend the system model to include mobile terminals acting as content owners by having the content cached locally, in order to further enhance the network capacity and coverage. We then propose an iterative resource management solution, which first solves the optimization subproblem of traffic offloading with orthogonal channels, and then optimally allocates channels to the transmitters with minimized interference due to channel reuse. We also propose efficient suboptimal hierarchical tree-based algorithms that operate in real time with dynamic and fast solutions for ultra-dense networks. For performance evaluation, we consider a realistic scenario consisting of a stadium topology with thousands of mobile terminals active simultaneously. We generate results as a function of a wide range of system parameters, and demonstrate that the proposed algorithms achieve near-optimal performance with notably low time complexity. This paper presents a comprehensive study of underwater visible light communications (UVLC), from channel characterization, performance analysis, and effective transmission and reception methods. To this end, we first simulate the fading-free impulse response (FFIR) of UVLC channels using Monte Carlo numerical procedure to take into account the absorption and scattering effects; and then to characterize turbulence effects, we multiply the aforementioned FFIR by a fading coefficient modeled as a lognormal random variable (RV) for weak oceanic turbulence. Based on this general channel model, we analytically study the bit error rate (BER) performance of UVLC systems with binary pulse position modulation (BPPM). In the next step, to mitigate turbulence effects, we employ multiple transmitters and/or receivers, i.e., we apply spatial diversity technique over UVLC links. Closed-form expressions for the system BER are provided, when an equal gain combiner is employed at the receiver side, thanks to the Gauss–Hermite quadrature formula as well as approximation to the sum of lognormal RVs. We further apply saddle-point approximation, an accurate photon-counting method, to evaluate the system BER in the presence of shot noise. Both laser-based collimated and light emitting diode based diffusive links are investigated. Additionally, in order to reduce the intersymbol interference (ISI), introduced by the multiple-scattering effect of UVLC channels on the propagating photons, we also obtain the optimal multiple-symbol detection (MSD) algorithm, as well as the suboptimal generalized MSD (GMSD) algorithm. Our numerical analysis indicate good matches between the analytical and photon-counting results implying the negligibility of signal-dependent shot noise, and also between the analytical results and numerical simulations confirming the accuracy of our derived closed-form expressions for the system BER. Dynamic network architectures (DNAs) have been developed under the assumption that some terminals can be converted into temporary access points (APs) anytime when connected to the Internet. In this paper, we consider the problem of assigning a group of users to a set of potential APs with the aim to maximize the downlink system throughput of DNA networks, subject to total transmit power and users’ quality of service (QoS) constraints. In our first method, we relax the integer optimization variables to be continuous. The resulting non-convex continuous optimization problem is solved using successive convex approximation framework to arrive at a sequence of second-order cone programs (SOCPs). In the next method, the selection process is viewed as finding a sparsity constrained solution to our problem of sum rate maximization. It is demonstrated in numerical results that while the first approach has better data rates for dense networks, the sparsity oriented method has a superior speed of convergence. Moreover, for the scenarios considered, in addition to comprehensively outperforming some well-known approaches, our algorithms yield data rates close to those obtained by branch and bound method. Cognitive small-cell networks have great potential in improving spectrum efficiency and mitigating inter-cell interference. Comprehensively classifying the channel states in cognitive small-cell networks is important for efficiently reusing the spectrum bands that are licensed to a macrocell. In this paper, we investigate channel state classification in cognitive small-cell networks with multilevels of transmission powers, including occupation detection of spectrum bands and transmission power classification of a macrocell base station (MBS). Specifically, two scenarios including a priori known signaling features and unknown signaling features are both studied. For the former scenario, we propose an optimal spectrum sensing and power classification algorithm, based on coherent classification, to achieve accurate sensing performance by fully exploiting the inherent information of the signaling features. Optimal sensing threshold and decision regions are derived for detecting and classifying the transmission power of the MBS. For the scenario without signaling features, a generic spectrum sensing and power classification algorithm is proposed based on noncoherent classification with low implementation complexity. A new performance metric, i.e., classification probability, is introduced to comprehensively evaluate the classification capability of the proposed algorithms. Multiple linear constraint water filling problem (MLWFP) is solved innovatively in this paper, in which powers allotted to the $T$ resources of the transmitting user maximize the capacity of the transmitting user while controlling the interference to all the surrounded users of the wireless network. MLWFP is solved previously using iterative algorithms that take more number of iterations, thus, increasing the computational complexity. Unlike prior algorithms, the uniqueness of the proposed algorithm is in detecting the tight bounds for the number of nonzero powers $S$. Subsequently, $S$ is calculated from its bounds. This makes it possible for the proposed algorithm to compute $S$ nonzero powers alone (using the closed-form solution), whereas all the prior algorithms find powers iteratively for all $T$ ( $>$ $S$ ) resources. Thus, the worst case computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced manyfold and is considerably lower than that of the prior algorithms by a factor of $O(T^2)$. This paper aims at solving two classes of energy efficiency (EE) maximization problems in multiple channels wireless communication systems. First, the EE maximization problem with sum power constraint is solved based on the geometric water-filling approach; and second, the approach is extended into the EE maximization problem with additional least throughput requirement constraint. Our proposed algorithms make use of the water-filling structure of the optimal solution and provide exact and computation efficient solution to the energy-efficient power allocation problems. The proposed algorithms also have excellent scalability, which is applicable for large-scale wireless communication systems. Optimality of the proposed algorithms is strictly proved, and the proposed algorithms only require low-degree polynomial computational complexity. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. We present a framework for random access that is based on three elements: physical-layer network coding (PLNC), signature codes, and tree splitting. In presence of a collision, physical-layer network coding enables the receiver to decode, i.e., compute, the sum of the packets that were transmitted by the individual users. For each user, the packet consists of the user’s signature, as well as the data that the user wants to communicate. As long as no more than $K$ users collide, their identities can be recovered from the sum of their signatures. This framework for creating and transmitting packets can be used as a fundamental building block in random access algorithms, since it helps to deal efficiently with the uncertainty of the set of contending terminals. In this paper, we show how to apply the framework in conjunction with a tree-splitting algorithm, which is required to deal with the case that more than $K$ users collide. We demonstrate that our approach achieves throughput that tends to 1 rapidly as $K$ increases. We also present results on net data-rate of the system, showing the impact of the overheads of the constituent elements of the proposed protocol. We compare the performance of our scheme with an upper bound that is obtained under the assumption that the active users are a priori known. Also, we consider an upper bound on the net data-rate for any PLNC-based strategy in which one linear equation per slot is decoded. We show that already at modest packet lengths, the net data-rate of our scheme becomes close to the second upper bound, i.e., the overhead of the contention resolution algorithm and the signature codes vanishes. Synchronization of bio-inspired pulse-coupled oscillators is receiving increased attention due to its wide applications in sensor networks and wireless communications. However, most existing results are obtained in the absence of malicious attacks. Given the distributed and unattended nature of wireless sensor networks, it is imperative to enhance the resilience of pulse based synchronization against malicious attacks. To achieve this goal, we propose a new pulse based interaction mechanism to improve the resilience of pulse based synchronization. We rigorously characterize the condition for mounting stealthy attacks under the proposed pulse based interaction mechanism and prove analytically that synchronization of legitimate oscillators can be achieved in the presence of multiple stealthy attackers even when the initial phases are unrestricted, i.e., randomly distributed in the entire oscillation period. This is in distinct difference from most existing attack-resilient synchronization algorithms (including the seminal paper from L. Lamport and P. M. Melliar-Smith, “Synchronizing Clocks in the Presence of Faults,” J. ACM, vol. 32, no. 1, pp. 52–78, 1985), which require a priori (almost) synchronization among legitimate nodes. Pilot contamination attack is an important activity of active eavesdropping conducted by a malicious user during channel training phase. This attack is potentially harmful to the physical layer security. In this paper, motivated by the fact that frequency asynchronism could introduce divergence of the transmitted pilot signals between intended user and attacker, we propose a new uncoordinated frequency shift (UFS) scheme for detecting pilot contamination attack in multiple antenna system. During the reverse training phase of the UFS scheme, the legitimate user Bob deliberately introduces multiple random frequency shifts in the publicly known pilot sequence. Since eavesdropper Eve has no knowledge of these random frequency shifts, it is almost impossible for her to pretend exactly like Bob. This provides the opportunity to detect the presence of Eve. An attack detection algorithm is then developed based on source enumeration method. Both the asymptotic performance analysis and numerical results are provided to verify the proposed detection scheme. The proposed scheme is also enhanced based on noise power estimation to cope with attacks from a multi-antenna Eve. Furthermore, the proposed UFS scheme is extended by introducing general parameterized phase shifts. It is demonstrated that the proposed UFS scheme can achieve comparable detection performance as the existing superimposed random sequence based scheme, without sacrifice of legitimate channel estimation performance. In this paper, we design a robust resource allocation algorithm for a wireless-powered communication network (WPCN) taking into account residual hardware impairments (HWIs) at the transceivers, the imperfectness of the channel state information, and the non-linearity of practical radio frequency energy harvesting circuits. In order to ensure power-efficient secure communication, physical layer security techniques are exploited to deliberately degrade the channel quality of a multiple-antenna eavesdropper. The resource allocation algorithm design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem for minimization of the total power consumption in the network, while guaranteeing the quality of service of the information receivers in terms of secrecy rate. The globally optimal solution of the optimization problem is obtained via a 2-D search and semidefinite programming relaxation. To strike a balance between computational complexity and system performance, a low-complexity iterative suboptimal resource allocation algorithm is also proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that both the proposed optimal and suboptimal schemes can significantly reduce the total system power consumption required for guaranteeing secure communication, and unveil the impact of HWIs on the system performance: 1) residual HWIs create a system performance bottleneck in WPCN in the high transmit/receive power regimes; 2) increasing the number of transmit antennas can effectively reduce the power consumption of wireless power transfer and alleviate the performance degradation due to residual HWIs; and 3) imperfect CSI exacerbates the impact of residual HWIs, which increases the power consumption of both wireless power and wireless information transfer. In this paper, we study the energy efficiency (EE) optimization for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in multiple-input-multiple-output two-way amplify-and-forward relay networks, where the energy-constrained relay harvests energy from two sources’ signals by power splitting (PS) scheme to forward the information of two sources. Our objective is to jointly design the sources and relay precoding matrices and the PS ratio to maximize the EE of the network, under the transmit power constraints at sources and relay and the minimum spectral efficiency requirement. We transform the nonconvex precoding and PS design problem into a difference of convex programming and propose an efficient iterative algorithm based on the constrained concave convex procedure to obtain a local optimum. To reduce computational complexity, we propose a generalized singular value decomposition based channel diagonalization scheme to simplify the optimization into a joint source and relay power allocation problem. The alternating optimization method is employed to solve this problem and a suboptimal solution to the EE maximization problem is obtained. One-bit quantization can significantly reduce the massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system hardware complexity, but at the same time it also brings great challenges to the system algorithm design. Specifically, it is difficult to recover information from the highly distorted samples as well as to obtain accurate channel estimation without increasing the number of pilots. In this paper, a novel inference algorithm called variational approximate message passing (VAMP) for one-bit quantized massive MIMO receiver is developed, which attempts to exploit the advantages of both the variational Bayesian inference algorithm and the bilinear generalized approximated message passing algorithm to accomplish joint channel estimation and data detection in a closed form with first-order complexity. Asymptotic state evolution analysis indicates the fast convergence rate of VAMP and also provides a lower bound for the data detection error. As a response to the challenge of data traffic explosion in wireless networks, content caching in device-to-device (D2D) communication networks has emerged as a promising solution. However, in practical deployment, D2D content caching has its own problems. In particular, not all of the user devices are willing to share the content with others due to numerous concerns, such as security, battery life, and social relationship. In this paper, we consider the factor of social relationship in the deployment of D2D content caching. First, we apply stochastic geometry theory to derive an analytical expression of downloading performance for the D2D caching network. Specifically, a social relationship model with respect to the physical distance is adopted in our analysis to obtain the average download delay performance using random and deterministic caching strategies. Second, to achieve a better performance in more practical and specific scenarios, we develop a socially aware distributed caching strategy based on a decentralized learning automaton, to optimize the cache placement operation in D2D networks. Different from the existing caching schemes, the proposed algorithm not only considers the file request probability and the closeness of devices as measured by their physical distance but also takes into account the social relationship between D2D users. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can converge quickly and outperforms the random and deterministic caching strategies. Generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) is one of the new waveforms with several attractive features such as lower out of band radiation, higher spectral efficiency, and better immunity to carrier frequency offset errors as compared with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. However, it requires receivers with high computational complexity. Among different linear receiver structures, the joint minimum mean square error (joint-MMSE) receiver for GFDM achieves the best bit-error-rate (BER) performance, but it is the most computationally complex linear receiver. In this paper, we present a novel low complexity joint-MMSE receiver. We derive the closed-form expression for the joint-MMSE receiver filter by harnessing circulant properties of the matrices involved in the demodulation process. Amidst different operations involved in the receiver processing, inversion of a positive definite circulant-plus-diagonal matrix is found to be the costliest. Two low-complexity algorithms for the inversion of a positive definite circulant-plus-diagonal matrix are developed to design the low complexity receiver. We also propose a low complexity bias correction to improve BER performance. Our proposed receiver achieves a log-linear order of complexity without any noticeable loss in BER performance. To achieve spectral-efficient massive access in future wireless networks, this paper proposes a comprehensive fully non-orthogonal communication framework. First, we design a fully non-orthogonal communication scheme which consists of non-orthogonal channel estimation and non-orthogonal multiple access. Then, we analyze the performance of the proposed fully non-orthogonal communication, and derive a tight lower bound on the spectral efficiency in terms of key system parameters and channel conditions. Meanwhile, several novel insights are provided on spectral efficiency via asymptotic analysis in three important cases, i.e., a large number of base station (BS) antennas, a high BS transmit power, and perfect channel state information (CSI) at the BS. Finally, we optimize the performance of the proposed fully non-orthogonal communication and present two simple but efficient optimization algorithms for maximizing the weighted sum of spectral efficiency. The development of analytical models to analyze the behavior of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) is a challenging aim. Adaptive methods are suitable for many algorithms (e.g., choice of forwarding paths, dynamic resource allocation, channel control congestion) and services (e.g., provision of multimedia services, message dissemination). These adaptive algorithms help the network to maintain a desired performance level. However, this is a difficult goal to achieve, especially in VANETs due to fast position changes of the VANET nodes. Adaptive decisions should be taken according to the current conditions of the VANET. Therefore, evaluation of transient measures is required for the characterization of VANETs. In the literature, different works address the characterization and measurement of the idle (or busy) time to be used in different proposals to attain a more efficient usage of wireless network. This paper focuses on the idle time of the link between two VANET nodes, which we denote as $T_{{idle}}$. Specifically, we have developed an analytical model based on a straightforward Markov reward chain to obtain transient measurements of $T_{{idle}}$. Location-aware wireless networks can provide precise location information in harsh environments, however, which is only possible when all nodes are well-functioning. In this paper, we propose algorithms and analyze the performance limits for both non-cooperative and cooperative localization networks in the presence of ranging outliers. Especially, we show that the localization performance can be boosted by using the cooperative outlier detection scheme. An algorithm based on expectation-maximization is proposed for non-cooperative localization networks, while a variational message passing-based algorithm is proposed for the cooperative counterparts. Performance limits are investigated using Cramér–Rao lower bound. Further inspection on the performance limits confirms the performance gain from the cooperative detection scheme. Stochastic geometric analysis is also carried out to account for the stochastic nature of wireless networks, as well as to provide simpler expressions and additional insights. Simulation results corroborate the analytical results, and show that both of the proposed algorithms are capable of attaining the corresponding performance limits at a significantly reduced computational cost compared with existing algorithms. Most performance metrics in wireless networks, such as outage probability, link capacity, etc., are functions of the distances between communicating/interfering nodes. A probabilistic distance-based model is definitely needed in quantifying these metrics, which eventually involves the nodal distance distribution (NDD) in a finite network intrinsically depending on the network coverage and nodal spatial distribution. Recently, the NDD from a reference node to a uniformly distributed node has been extended to the networks in the shape of arbitrary polygons. In contrast, the NDD between two uniformly distributed nodes (Ran2Ran) is still confined to the networks in certain specific shapes, including disks, triangles, rectangles, rhombuses, trapezoids, and regular polygons, which greatly limits its applicable network scenarios. By extending a tool in integral geometry, called Kinematic Measure, and using decomposition and recursion methods, this paper shows a systematic, algorithmic approach to Ran2Ran NDDs, which can handle arbitrarily-shaped networks, including convex, concave, disjoint, and tiered networks. Besides validating our approach through extensive simulations and comparisons with the known results if applicable, we also demonstrate its potentials in handling nonuniform nodal distributions, and in modeling two wireless networks of particular interest in the current literature, where the existing approaches are inapplicable. This paper presents a technique capable to ameliorating the impairment caused by radio channel multipath, in the estimation of the wireless communications direction of arrival (DoA). This feature is enabled by a space division multiple access approach supported by a DoA technique based on the combination of the estimates achieved at both 2.45 and 5.2 GHz. The DoA estimation relies on a comparison between the real-time received signal strength indicator and the predicted signal level distribution, which can be estimated and stored without the need of lengthy offline measurement. The experimental setup adopted for the technique validation involves an active interferer, by which arbitrary multipath levels can be implemented. An equivalent reflection coefficient signal-to-interference ratio is defined as the ratio of the unperturbed signal and the induced coherent isofrequency interferer signal, compatible with the two-ray model of the multipath impairment. The proposed technique exploits a dual-band frequency planning, and because of the combined use of the data at the two frequencies, a mean error of 2.6° is observed within a domain ranging from 0.5 to 4 m, for the entire 360° angle in the reference anechoic scenario. The 90th percentile of the cumulative error distribution is 5.4°. In the presence of a strong coherent interferer, compatible with a total reflection from the walls, the mean error is 4.9°, while the 90th percentile of the cumulative error distribution is 10.5°. In the presence of the strongest coherent interferer signal available, which is more severe than the worst case of total reflection, the mean error is 7.1°, while the 90th percentile of the cumulative error distribution is 15.1°. This paper proposes a novel approach for digital predistortion, based on direct learning architecture (DLA), to reduce the computational complexity. In power amplifier (PA) behavioral models, the coefficients of a Volterra polynomial or a simplified Volterra polynomial are extracted by calculating the inverse of a time-varying matrix, which is resource-consuming, time-consuming, and power-consuming due to its matrix dimension and inverse operation in a field-programmable gate array. To speed up the computation and save hardware resources, we propose a low computational complexity DLA with covariance matrix that uses the constant covariance matrix to replace the time-varying input signal filled matrix based on a stationary ergodic random process. To verify the proposed method, it was applied to a wideband Doherty gallium nitride (GaN) PA at 2.6 GHz with a 40-MHz orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signal, and to a dual-band Doherty GaN PA at 1.9 and 2.6 GHz with two 20-MHz long-term evolution signals. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves almost the same performance as the traditional approach, with less than one fifth of the computational quantity. This paper presents systematic analysis and design of a megahertz multiple-receiver (RX) wireless power transfer (WPT) system driven by a Class E power amplifier. Both circuit-level and system-level analyses are conducted to discuss the characteristics of the WPT system. In order to simultaneously manage the power flow and maximize the overall system efficiency, a new control scheme is proposed that combines maximum efficiency point tracking and time-division multiplexing. Through the proposed scheme, RXs with different loading and coupling conditions can be charged by the same transmitter with simplified design and control strategy. Finally, the proposed control scheme is validated using an example 6.78-MHz three-RX WPT system. Recently, social networks have witnessed a massive surge in popularity. A key issue in social network research is network evolution analysis, which assumes that all the autonomous nodes in a social network follow uniform evolution mechanisms. However, different nodes in a social network should have different evolution mechanisms to generate different edges. This is proposed as the underlying idea to ensure the nodes’ evolution diversity in this paper. Our approach involves identifying the micro-level node evolution that generates different edges by introducing the existing link prediction methods from the perspectives of nodes. We also propose the edge generation coefficient to evaluate the extent to which an edge's generation can be explained by a link prediction method. To quantify the nodes’ evolution diversity, we define the diverse evolution distance. Furthermore, a diverse node adaption algorithm is proposed to indirectly analyze the evolution of the entire network based on the nodes’ evolution diversity. Extensive experiments on disparate real-world networks demonstrate that the introduction of the nodes’ evolution diversity is important and beneficial for analyzing the network evolution. Detection of the number of transmit antennas plays an important role in the design of adaptive multiantenna wireless communication systems. This paper develops a detection algorithm based on second- and fourth-order statistics of the received signal and time-varying nature of the wireless channel. In contrast to existing feature-based algorithms, the proposed algorithm does not require a priori information about the transmitted signals, such as coding scheme, modulation type, and pilot patterns. Unlike information-theoretic algorithms, it does not require the number of receive antennas to be larger than that of transmit antennas. In fact, the proposed algorithm is capable of operating with a single receive antenna even for large numbers of transmit antennas. A software-defined wireless local area network (SDWLAN) has gained significant interest recently from both the academic and industrial communities and initiated a paradigmatic reconsideration on the stereotyped management and control of current WLAN due to its flexibility and programmability. However, with the proliferation of mobile devices, efficient client association with quality of service (QoS) guarantees in the high-density SDWLAN is a very challenging issue. In this paper, we study the client association problem in the SDWLAN with new features, including centralized association, global network state awareness, seamless handoff, and flow-level association. We formulate the client association in a high-density scenario as an optimization problem aiming to minimize the interpacket delay of individual flows, based on an unsaturated and heterogeneous Markovian analytical model. Furthermore, we interpret the optimization problem as an NP-hard supermodular set function minimization problem, which is solved by two low-complexity heuristic methods, namely the greedy algorithm and the bounded local search algorithm. In this paper, we investigate the cross-layer resource optimization for wireless relay networks with dynamic node-selfishness information. The degree of intrinsic selfishness (DeIS) and the degree of extrinsic selfishness (DeES) of the relay node (RN) are defined as the effects of its own residual energy resource and the incentive in an incentive mechanism, respectively. A model of two-timescale node-selfishness dynamics is constructed to describe the time-varying characteristics of the RN's DeIS and DeES. Based on the two-timescale node-selfishness dynamics of the RNs, a two-timescale resource-optimization dynamical algorithm (TRODA) is employed to control the transmit powers of both RNs and end users (EU), as well as the flow rates of the data packets injected by all EUs. Meanwhile, the stability and the tracking error of the TRODA under the two-timescale node-selfishness dynamics are analyzed by Lyapunov theory. The ability of mobile devices to be connected to more than one radio node at the same time enables mobile devices to transmit and receive traffic to and from multiple paths. This ability helps to increase the average mobile device data rate and to improve the network reliability. Load balancing among multiple paths become a key factor to avoid network congestion, nevertheless it requires efficient techniques to split traffic without adding more delay or generating too much packet reordering for delay-sensitive traffic. In this paper, we address two key issues in the context of uplink wireless mobile networks: 1) how to accurately split traffic among multiple paths and 2) how to minimize the end-to-end delay without increasing packet reordering. We propose delay-aware load balancing algorithm (DALBA), a novel strategy that splits traffic at the granularity of the packet. DALBA aims to minimize the splitting error (SE) and the end-to-end delay difference by effectively using all of the available paths. We analyze DALBA's performance through extensive simulations using H.264 video traffic. Numerical results demonstrate that DALBA outperforms previous algorithms in terms of SE, end-to-end delay and peak signal-to-noise ratio while keeping packet reordering to a suitable low value. Wireless vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-toinfrastructure (V2I) communication holds great promise for significantly reducing the human and financial costs of vehicle collisions. A common characteristic of this communication is the broadcast of a device's core state information at regular intervals (e.g., vehicle speed and location or traffic signal state and timing). Unless controlled, the aggregate of these broadcasts will congest the channel under dense traffic scenarios, reducing the effectiveness of collision avoidance applications that use transmitted information. Active congestion control using distributed techniques is a topic of great interest for establishing the scalability of this technology. This paper defines a new adaptive congestion control algorithm that can be applied to the message rate of devices in this vehicular environment. While other published approaches rely on binary control, the LInear MEssage Rate Integrated Control (LIMERIC) algorithm takes advantage of full-precision control inputs that are available on the wireless channel. The result is provable convergence to fair and efficient channel utilization in the deterministic environment, under simple criteria for setting adaptive parameters. This “perfect” convergence avoids the limit cycle behavior that is inherent to binary control. We also discuss several practical aspects associated with implementing LIMERIC, including guidelines for the choice of system parameters to obtain desired utilization outcomes, a gain saturation technique that maintains robust convergence under all conditions, convergence with asynchronous updates, and using channel load to determine the aggregate message rate that is observable at a receiver. This paper also extends the convergence analysis for two important cases, i.e., measurement noise in the input signal and delay in the update process. This paper illustrates key analytical results using MATLAB numerical results and employs standard NS-2 simulations to demonstrate the performance of LIMERIC in several high-density scenarios. In this paper, we model a vehicular multihop network as an evolving graph and formulate the problem of optimal data dissemination over the network in terms of minimum number of transmissions. We show that the problem belongs to the NP complexity class and provide an easy to implement polynomial-time \2 \tau H(\Delta)-approximation algorithm, where \tau is the number of different subgraphs that comprise the evolving graph, and H(\Delta) is the harmonic number of the degree of the evolving graph. By means of applying our heuristic over a vehicular scenario generated by a microscopic road-traffic simulator, we provide some insight into the data dissemination issue. In this paper, we study the queue-overflow probability of wireless scheduling algorithms. In wireless networks operated under queue-length-based scheduling algorithms, there often exists a tight coupling between the service-rate process, the system backlog process, the arrival process, and the stochastic process governing channel variations. Although one can use sample-path large-deviation techniques to form an estimate of the queue-overflow probability, the formulation leads to a difficult multidimensional calculus-of-variations problem. In this paper, we present a new technique to address this complexity issue. Using ideas from the Lyapunov function approach in control theory, this technique maps the complex multidimensional calculus-of-variations problem to a 1-D calculus-of-variations problem, and the latter is often much easier to solve. Further, under appropriate conditions, we show that when a scheduling algorithm minimizes the drift of a Lyapunov function at each point of every fluid sample path, the algorithm will be optimal in the sense that it maximizes the asymptotic decay rate of the probability that the Lyapunov function value exceeds a given threshold. We believe that these results can potentially be used to study the queue-overflow probability of a large class of wireless scheduling algorithms and to design new scheduling algorithms with optimal overflow probabilities. A number of recent source coding techniques compress the source signal into multiple layers such that a destination is able to reconstruct the original signal (with some distortion) even if it has not received all the layers. Implementation of such source coding techniques in wireless networks requires the application of coding mechanisms (such as multilayer coding) which allow unequal error protection for different layers of the transmitted data. In this paper, we study the performance of multilayer coding for quasi-static fading channels where the source and the destination are equipped with multiple antennas and the Channel-State-Information (CSI) is only known at the destination. We limit the study to the scenarios where the destination is only able to perform successive-decoding (joint-decoding is not possible) and the objective is to find the design of a multilayer code which maximizes the average data rate received at the destination. To this end, we first propose a design rule for constructing a proper multilayer code for Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) networks. Furthermore, the paper presents a procedure which uses the proposed design rule to determine the parameters of the multilayer code. Consider the single-group multicast beamforming problem, where multiple users receive the same data stream simultaneously from a single transmitter. The problem is NP-hard and all existing algorithms for the problem either find suboptimal approximate or local stationary solutions. In this paper, we propose an efficient branch-and-bound algorithm for the problem that is guaranteed to find its global solution. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed algorithm is the first tailored global algorithm for the single-group multicast beamforming problem. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm is computationally efficient (albeit its theoretical worst-case iteration complexity is exponential with respect to the number of receivers) and it significantly outperforms a state-of-the-art general-purpose global optimization solver called Baron. Our proposed algorithm provides an important benchmark for performance evaluation of existing algorithms for the same problem. By using it as the benchmark, we show that two state-of-the-art algorithms, semidefinite relaxation algorithm and successive linear approximation algorithm, work well when the problem dimension (i.e., the number of antennas at the transmitter and the number of receivers) is small but their performance deteriorates quickly as the problem dimension increases. The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system makes efficient use of spectrum and increases the transmission throughput in wireless communications. The sphere decoding (SD) is an efficient algorithm that enables the maximum-likelihood (ML) detection for the MIMO system. However, the SD algorithm has variable complexity, and its complexity increases rapidly with decreasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we propose a novel ML detection algorithm for the MIMO system based on differential metrics. We define the differential metrics and derive the associated recursive calculation. We then give the indicative functions, which can be used to possibly find some ML-detected bits of the initial sequence. The indicative functions are further applied to implement an efficient tree search for ML detection. The proposed algorithm does not need QR decomposition and matrix inversion. The tree search process needs only the additive operation, while the number of multiplications before the tree search is constant. Our algorithm can achieve the exact ML detection as the SD algorithm. Unlike the SD algorithm, the complexity of our algorithm reduces with decreasing SNR, whereas at high SNR, the complexity is nearly constant. We also give the convergence analysis for the SD and proposed algorithms, and the simulation verifies our analysis. For the proposed algorithm, the number of necessary memory is constant during the tree search, and the implementation by parallel processing is possible. This paper studies a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast relay channel (BRC), in which a multiple-antenna base station (BS) communicates with multiple-antenna users through an infrastructure-based multiple-antenna relay station (RS). Applying dirty paper coding (DPC) at the BS and linear processing at the RS, our aim is to find the input covariance matrices and the RS beamforming matrix that maximize the system sum-rate. To solve this non-convex problem, a more tractable dual multiple access relay channel (MARC) is investigated and an alternating-minimization algorithm is proposed. Furthermore, the mapping from the resulting covariance matrices for the MARC to the covariance matrices for the BRC is derived. Unlike other existing single-antenna-user schemes, our solution is applicable to a more general network with any number of antennas at the users. Compared with two such single-antenna-user schemes, simulations show that the proposed scheme outperforms the all-pass relay design and performs similarly to the SVD-relay design. Moreover, the proposed design performs close to the sum-rate upper bound with the performance gap decreasing with increasing number of antennas per user. Multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) technology can efficiently use the spectrum to increase the communication throughput. Designing low-complexity detection algorithms with high performance for the MIMO system has been an important issue. In this paper, we propose efficient detection algorithms for MIMO systems based on differential metrics. We first define differential metrics and give their recursive calculation of different orders. Based on differential metrics, we give the principle of gradient search. We then propose a gradient search algorithm (GSA) that can provide a tradeoff between performance and complexity. The GSA applies the indicative functions such that we can determine in advance some maximum-likelihood (ML) bits of the initial sequence and reduce the searching range. The GSA also uses a stop condition with which we can stop the search if the proper condition is satisfied. The GSA does not need QR decomposition (QRD) or matrix inversion. The multiplicative operations are only necessary before the searching process, during which only the additive operations are needed. For large-scaled MIMO systems, we also give a simple searching algorithm based on differential metrics. Finally, we propose a fixed-complexity gradient algorithm (FCGA), which has a fixed number of operations during the searching process and is appropriate for pipelined hardware implementation. To efficiently trade off system sum rate and link fairness, power allocation in wireless spectrum-sharing networks often concentrates upon proportional fairness. The corresponding problem has been proved to be convex for a single tone but NP-hard for more than two tones. However, in the two-tone case, the complexity of the problem for achieving proportional fairness has not been addressed yet. In this paper, we prove that the issue of proportional-fairness optimization for the two-tone situation is NP-hard by reducing the problem of finding the maximum independent set in an undirected graph to it. This paper uses a spatial Aloha model to describe a distributed autonomous wireless network in which a group of transmit–receive pairs (users) shares a common collision channel via slotted-Aloha-like random access. The objective of this study is to develop an intelligent algorithm to be embedded into the transceivers so that all users know how to self-tune their medium access probability (MAP) to achieve overall Pareto optimality in terms of network throughput under spatial reuse while maintaining network stability. While the optimal solution requires each user to have complete information about the network, our proposed algorithm only requires users to have local information. The fundamental of our algorithm is that the users will first self-organize into a number of nonoverlapping neighborhoods, and the user with the maximum node degree in each neighborhood is elected as the local leader (LL). Each LL then adjusts its MAP according to a parameter R, which indicates the radio intensity level in its neighboring region, whereas the remaining users in the neighborhood simply follow the same MAP value. We show that by ensuring R \le \text{2} at the LLs, the stability of the entire network can be assured, even when each user only has partial network information. For practical implementation, we propose each LL to use R=\text{2}$ as the constant reference signal to its built-in proportional and integral controller. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) present a multilevel feature when vehicles move in multilevel scenarios, such as viaducts, tunnels, and ramps. Different from city and highway scenarios, complicated node distribution and transmission conditions make the routing decision more challenging in the multilevel environment. To address the issue, this paper investigates geographic routing protocols for the multilevel scenario of VANETs. We first reveal the impacts of the multilevel feature on network characteristics by an outdoor transmission experiment and a stochastic analysis. In particular, the measured data and analysis results show that the wireless transmission range dramatically degrades, which deteriorates the connectivity probability and the performance of geographic routing protocols in the network. Motivated by these results, we propose a multilevel-scenario-oriented greedy opportunity routing protocol (M-GOR). In the protocol, we present a calculation method for the connectivity probability and a greedy opportunity forwarding (GOF) algorithm to respond to the impacts of the multilevel structure. This paper investigates simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) for a multiple-input–single-output (MISO) secrecy channel. First, transmit beamforming without artificial noise (AN) is designed to achieve the secrecy rate maximization problem subject to the transmit power and the energy harvesting (EH) constraints. This problem is not convex, but this can be solved by applying a bisection search to a sequence of the associated power minimization problems, each of which can be solved by using a novel relaxation approach. Moreover, we extend our proposed algorithms to the robust case by incorporating channel uncertainties. Then, transmit beamforming with AN is investigated for the secrecy rate maximization problem, where two relaxation approaches are presented, i.e., a two-level optimization algorithm and a successive convex approximation (SCA), to solve the secrecy rate maximization problem. In addition, tightness analyses of rank relaxation are provided to show that the optimal transmit covariance matrix exactly returns rank one. Recent advances in loop interference cancelation techniques enable full-duplex relaying (FDR) systems, which transmit and receive simultaneously in the same band with high spectrum efficiency. Meanwhile, wireless virtualization has attracted a lot of attention from both academia and industry because it can provide more flexibility, diversity, and other benefits in the process of wireless network design, construction, operation, and management. In this paper, we introduce the idea of wireless virtualization into FDR cellular networks. Then, the problem of energy-aware virtual resource management is formulated as a three-stage Stackelberg game. The subgame perfect equilibrium for each stage is analyzed. In addition, the interplays of the three-stage game are discussed, and an iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain the Stackelberg equilibrium solution. In this paper, we study energy-efficient power allocation in distributed antenna systems (DASs). Unlike previous works that assumed perfect channel-state information (CSI) at the transmitter, we investigate a more practical case, where only the slowly varying large-scale CSI is known, to reduce the system overhead for CSI acquisition. Under a generalized DAS model, the power allocation problem for energy-efficiency (EE) maximization is formulated as a nonconvex fractional programming problem. Using the random matrix theory, the nonlinear fractional programming theory, and the saddle-point theory, we propose an iterative algorithm that achieves the global optimal solution. We also show that deploying the antennas in a distributed manner may enlarge the region where the optimal EE and the optimal spectral efficiency (SE) can be simultaneously achieved. We present in this paper a novel proactive interference avoidance scheme for mobile-to-mobile (M2M) communication as an underlay in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) downlink networks. The proposed scheme introduces an intelligent user-selective resource allocation algorithm that aims to proactively avoid interference between M2M pairs and LTE regular users while achieving a satisfactory link budget for both M2M and LTE regular links. The proposed resource allocation algorithm is based on a novel low-complexity interference estimation approach that requires only channel quality indicator (CQI) information (CSI). Since the CQI reporting mechanism has been already implemented in current LTE systems, the proposed algorithm is indeed practical and standard compatible, compared with the existing works that require perfect knowledge of the channel state information (CSI). In this research, achievable data throughput with LTE-compliant adaptive modulation and coding has been adopted as the optimization measurement, rather than the information-theoretic capacity. Therefore, the performance of the proposed scheme is practically realizable in LTE communication systems. Since the performance of the proposed scheme highly relies on the accuracy of CQI feedback, we also carry out performance analysis to evaluate the impact of CQI estimation error and delay. The simulation results show that the total achievable data throughput for LTE networks is dramatically enhanced by M2M communication with this proposed interference avoidance resource allocation scheme. In this paper, we study the energy-efficient resource allocation problem for device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks, which aims to maximize the minimum weighted energy efficiency of D2D links while guaranteeing minimum data rates for cellular links. We first characterize the optimal power allocation of the cellular links to transform the original resource allocation problem into the joint subchannel and power allocation problem for D2D links. We then propose three resource allocation algorithms with different complexity levels, namely, dual-based, branch-and-bound (BnB), and relaxation-based rounding (RBR) algorithms. While the dual-based algorithm solves the problem by using the dual decomposition method, the BnB and RBR algorithms tackle the problem by employing the relaxation approach. We establish the strong performance guarantees for the proposed algorithms through theoretical analysis. Estimation of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) plays an important role in many fields of communications. This paper addresses the SNR estimation of multiple phase-shift keying (MPSK) signals in Nakagami- $m$ fading channels. A family of SNR estimators with closed-form expressions is developed based on the relationship among different orders of moments. Compared with the existing algorithms, the estimator, which exploits the minimum order of moments, exhibits the best performance in general. We also propose a joint estimation algorithm for SNR and the fading factor when it is unknown. Simulation results verify the feasibility and superiority of the proposed algorithms. The increasing densification of telecommunications mobile networks raises the compelling problem of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF). In this paper, we address the particular concept of heterogeneous networks, where small cells (SCs) are deployed to build up a second layer to the existing macrocell network. SC deployment is shown to be particularly effective in reducing EMF exposure, in addition to capacity enhancement. Previous studies on EMF have focused on the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) components separately, although they are strongly correlated. Relying on the definition of the exposure index (EI) from the European FP7 Lexnet project, we evaluate the impact on EMF exposure due to SC deployment. Guidelines for EMF-efficient deployment of SCs are first presented and evaluated. Then, a new enhanced intercell interference coordination (eICIC) algorithm using UL and DL metrics to optimize capacity and exposure to EMF is proposed. Static and self-optimizing dynamic implementations of the solution are considered, using a utility function related to the sojourn time of the users. Time-domain and frequency-domain self-optimized eICIC are compared in terms of EMF exposure reduction and capacity enhancement. The eICIC algorithms are combined with a self-optimized coverage range expansion function leading to further reduction of the EI. The proposed solution for optimizing both capacity and exposure to EMF is compared with a capacity-driven solution based on the DL metrics only. In heterogeneous networks (HetNets), the load between macrocell base stations (MBSs) and small-cell base stations (SBSs) is imbalanced due to their different transmission powers and locations. This load imbalance significantly impacts system performance and affects the experience of mobile users (MUs) with different priorities. In this paper, we aim to distributively optimize the user association in HetNets with various user priorities to solve the load balancing problem. Since the user association is a binary matching problem, which is NP-hard, we propose a distributed belief propagation (BP) algorithm to approach the optimal solution. We first develop a factor graph model, using the network topology, to represent this user association problem. With this factor graph, we propose a novel distributed BP algorithm by adopting the proportional fairness as the objective. Next, we theoretically prove the existence of the fixed point in our BP algorithm. To be more practical, we develop an approximation method to significantly reduce the computational and communication complexity of the BP algorithm. Furthermore, we analyze some properties of the factor graph relevant to the performance of the BP algorithm using the stochastic geometry. Simulation results show that 1) the proposed BP algorithm well approaches the optimal system performance and achieves a much better performance compared with other association schemes and that 2) the analytical results on the average degree distribution and sparsity of the factor graph match with those obtained from the Monte Carlo simulations. Software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) are a promising system architecture and control mechanism for future networks. Although some works have been done on wireless SDN and NFV, recent advancements in device-to-device (D2D) communications are largely ignored in this novel framework. In this paper, we study the integration of D2D communication in the framework of SDN and NFV. An inherent challenge in supporting software-defined D2D is the imperfectness of network state information, including channel state information (CSI) and queuing state information, in virtual wireless (QSI) networks. To address this challenge, we formulate the resource sharing problem in this framework as a discrete stochastic optimization problem and develop discrete stochastic approximation algorithms to solve this problem. Such algorithms can reduce the computational complexity compared with exhaustive search while achieving satisfactory performance. Both the static wireless channel and time-varying channels are considered. Extensive simulations show that users can benefit from both wireless network virtualization and software-defined D2D communications, and our proposed scheme can achieve considerable performance gains in both system throughput and user utility under practical network settings. The extensive use of nodes' local information, e.g., the distance to the destination or the contact frequency with the destination, in such routing schemes can cause severe security and privacy problems. Existing solutions of anonymous routing can introduce undesired overhead and fail to provide the confidentiality of the routing metric. In this paper, we propose an advanced framework for opportunistic routing schemes, providing the following properties: confidentiality of the nodes' routing metric, anonymous authentication, and efficient key agreement for pairwise communication. A comprehensive evaluation, including security analysis, efficiency analysis, and simulation evaluation, is presented to show the security and feasibility of the proposed framework. Multipath transmission control protocol (MPTCP) allows a TCP connection to operate across multiple paths simultaneously and becomes highly attractive to support the emerging mobile devices with various radio interfaces and to improve resource utilization as well as connection robustness. The existing multipath congestion control algorithms, however, are mainly loss-based and prefer the paths with lower drop rates, leading to severe performance degradation in wireless communication systems, where random packet losses occur frequently. To address this challenge and improve the performance of MPTCP in wireless networks, this paper proposes a new mVeno algorithm, which makes full use of the congestion information of all the subflows belonging to a TCP connection in order to adaptively adjust the transmission rate of each subflow. Specifically, mVeno modifies the additive increase phase of Veno so as to effectively couple all subflows by dynamically varying the congestion window increment based on the receiving ACKs. The weighted parameter of each subflow for tuning the congestion window is determined by distinguishing packet losses caused by random error of wireless links or by network congestion. We implement mVeno in a Linux server and conduct extensive experiments both in test bed and in real WAN to validate its effectiveness. The performance results demonstrate that compared with the existing schemes, mVeno increases the throughput significantly, achieves load balancing, and can keep the fairness with regular TCP.
