This study examines Max Dvořák's previously unknown papers prepared for his one-semester lecture series at the university of Vienna in 1913. Dvořák titled these lectures "explanations of Selected Works of Art" (Erklärung ausgewählter Kunstwerke) and in doing so developed a distinctive method within the art historical research of the so-called vienna School of Art History. The paper interprets the lectures through a close reading of the method as a parallel to the change in the concept of the work of art as it occurred in the philosophy and practice of art at the beginning of the twentieth century, demonstrated in the study by examples from the thinking of the German philosopher Oskar Becker and a transformation of the meaning of painting by the French artist Marcel Duchamp. As the study shows, such analogies allow us to understand the meaning of the work of art in Max Dvořák's art history in a new way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held the 3rd International Symposium on Trends in Radiopharmaceuticals, (ISTR-2023) at IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, during the week of 16–21 April 2023. This procedural paper summarizes highlights from symposium presentations, posters, panel discussions and satellite meetings, and provides additional resources that may be useful to researchers working with diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals in the academic, government and industry setting amongst IAEA Member States and beyond. More than 550 participants in person from 88 Member States attended the ISTR-2023. Over 360 abstracts were presented from all over the world by a diverse group of global scientists working with radiopharmaceuticals. Given this group of international radiochemists is unique to ISTR (IAEA funding enabled many to attend), there was an invaluable wealth of knowledge on the global state of the radiopharmaceutical sciences present at the meeting. The intent of this Proceedings paper is to share this snapshot from our international colleagues with the broader radiopharmaceutical sciences community by highlighting presentations from the conference on the following topics: Isotope Production and Radiochemistry, Industrial Insights, Regional Trends, Training and Education, Women in the Radiopharmaceutical Sciences, and Future Perspectives and New Initiatives. The authors of this paper are employees of IAEA, members of the ISTR-2023 Organizing Committee and/or members of the EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry Editorial Board who attended ISTR-2023. Overall, ISTR-2023 fostered the successful exchange of scientific ideas around every aspect of the radiopharmaceutical sciences. It was well attended by a diverse mix of radiopharmaceutical scientists from all over the world, and the oral and poster presentations provided a valuable update on the current state-of-the-art of the field amongst IAEA Member States. Presentations as well as networking amongst the attendees resulted in extensive knowledge transfer amongst the various stakeholders representing 88 IAEA Member States. This was considered particularly valuable for attendees from Member States where nuclear medicine and the radiopharmaceutical sciences are still relatively new. The automotive industry is increasingly dependent on computing systems with different critical requirements. The verification and validation methods for these systems are now leveraging complex AI methods, for which the decision algorithms introduce non-determinism, especially in autonomous driving. This paper presents a runtime verification technique agnostic to the target system, which focuses on monitoring spatio-temporal properties that abstract the evolution of objects' behavior in their spatial and temporal flow. First, a formalization of three known traffic rules (from the Vienna convention on road traffic) is presented, where a spatio-temporal logic fragment is used. Then, these logical expressions are translated to a monitoring model written in first-order logic, where they are processed by a non-linear satisfiability solver. Finally, the translation allows the solver to check the validity of the encoded properties according to an instance of a specific traffic scenario (a trace). The results obtained from our tool, which automatically generates a monitor from a formula, show that our approach is feasible for online monitoring in a real-world environment. Understanding of fault propagation in pull‐apart basins is important due to its control on the depocenter migration, which is a common characteristic of pull‐apart basins; nevertheless, the evolution law of faults in the pull‐apart basin is not very clear. Most studies based on physical simulations have rarely paid attention to the relationship between fault propagation and migration of the depocenter. In this study, we simulate the fault propagation in the underlapping, neutral and overlapping releasing bend via the discrete element simulation method and discuss the corresponding migration of the depocenter. In this paper, more parameters (maximum shear force, distribution of tensile contact force, measuring stress) were used together to find out the evolution law of faults in line with natural basins. The results reveal the process of fault propagation, which has not been proposed in the previous simulating and case studies: the fault propagates from the ends of the master faults to the centre of the releasing bend and then proceeds externally. Consequently, the depocenter of the basin, which has undergone migration, experiences a transition from the dual depocenter state at the ends of the master faults to being a single depocenter at the centre of releasing bend and finally further expands in an outward direction. The characteristics of fault development and depocenter migration for the Khanguet Sidi Neji‐Gafsa (KSG) Basin, the Vienna basin and the Gulf of California are in accord with the results observed in the simulation. This study provides a new understanding of the fault propagation in pull‐apart basins and can assist in the interpretation of the evolutionary stages that pull‐apart basins undergo. The "MyFairShare" project develops fair CO2 mobility budgets for individuals. Here, "fairness" mainly depends on the people's location as everyone should be able to access all destinations necessary to perform everyday tasks. Therefore, a basic understanding about the accessibility of facilities to visit within an area is needed, regarding all activities that must be performed. Given this, the amount of emitted CO2 is computed, assuming the use of sustainable modes while regarding reasonable ranges, i.e. a travel time of 15 min. In order to achieve this, a software system for computing this metric has been developed. It is based on open source applications and uses data that—besides public transport data in GTFS format—is freely available throughout Europe. This paper describes the method and presents the results of applying it to the project's five Living Labs Berlin, Jelgava, London, Sarpsborg, and Vienna. The results show that besides population density, the possibility to use sustainable modes of transport highly depend on the land use mix, i.e. the allocation of facilities daily activities may be performed at in the vicinity of places of inhabitancy. Breast milk holds an immense nutritional value as it contains health-promoting substances in a unique, optimal form. Additionally, breast milk's significance extends to health and environmental protection, as it serves as an indicator of both maternal and infant exposure. In this study, breast milk samples collected in 2013 and in 2014–2016 from mothers in Vienna (Austria) were analysed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as well as further substances which have been listed under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) due to their persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic properties. The total concentration of the PBDE congeners in the samples (n = 18, sampled 2013) ranged from 0.055 to 52 ng/g lipid, and from 0.002 to 2.5 ng/g breast milk. In the pooled sample, the sum of PBDEs was detected at a level of 4.4 ng/g lipid. Based on the 2014–2016 study population, certain PFAS were detected in all samples (n = 40). Exposure to the sum of four specific PFAS including perfluorooctanesulphonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluoro-n-nonanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluoro-1-hexanesulfonate (PFHxS) ranged between 0.014 and 0.12 ng/L breast milk. In the pooled sample, PFOS and PFOA were found in concentrations of 0.025 ng/g and of 0.045 ng/g, respectively. In addition, the first generation of POPs, mainly organochlorine compounds, was measured in a pooled sample of breast milk from participants sampled in 2014–2016 as part of the WHO/UNEP breast milk monitoring program and compared to the POPs measured in pooled samples collected in 1987/1988 and 1992/1993, respectively. Therefore, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the Stockholm Convention on POPs by comparing the Austrian results from the WHO/UNEP global breast milk study from 1987 to 2016. However, the data also show that, despite these reductions, health-relevant levels are still being reached, particularly in terms of children's health when the presence of the new generation of POPs, such as PBDEs and PFAS, in human breast milk is taken into account. The derivation of pseudorandom number generation (PRNG) from the Josephson junction (JJ) stimulated by the Wien bridge oscillator (JJSWBO) and its microcontroller validation is given in this paper. Via the numerical investigations of the JJSWBO, the encyclopedic dynamical maps in different coordinate spaces constituting the system's parameters explicitly elaborate the global behaviour of the system presenting the greatest Lyapunov exponents (GLE). Chaotic behaviours were captured for GLE greater than zero and periodic behaviours for GLE less than zero. Further, bifurcation characteristics expose monostable and bistable periodic oscillations, bistable periodic doubling route to bistable chaos, interceptions of bistable regular behaviours and bistable chaotic presentations, coexisting attractors, monostable chaotic dynamics and intermittency phenomenon. The microcontroller validation (MCV) of the JJSWBO is presented to validate the numerical simulation results. From the chaotic equations describing JJSWBO, a PRNG with a linear feedback shift register (LFSR) as a post-processing unit is designed. The randomness of the generated binary data from the proposed JJSWBO-based PRNG is successfully tested by using the NIST 800-22 test suite. Four of the stations newly opened during the underground extension of the U2 line in Vienna in 2008 have been covering a large part of their heating and cooling needs for now almost one and a half decades by using geothermal energy, which is generated by means of energy diaphragm walls, energy piles and energy bottom slabs of the station buildings. As this was the first infrastructure building of this type and scale worldwide at the time of construction, one of the diaphragm walls of the Taborstraße station was equipped with numerous sensors to obtain data sets for the thermo-mechanical long-term behavior of these wall elements for the very first time. Continuous measurements with automatic data recording were initially carried out from April 2008 until May 2011. In October 2020, the measurements were resumed with the existing sensors, this time manually and once a month, in order to carry out a long-term comparison of the measurement data and to create a basis for assessing the effects of the geothermal operation on its structural components. This paper gives an overview of the Taborstraße station with a focus on the thermally activated geostructures and their instrumentation. A comparison of the recorded generated energy with the predicted heating and cooling demand is discussed in the context of the energy data. In addition, the temperature and the strain behavior of the observed energy diaphragm wall is discussed based on the measurement data collected over a period of around 14 years of operational experience. Homogenized atmospheric water vapour data are an important prerequisite for climate analysis. Compared with other techniques, GPS has an inherent homogeneity advantage, but it still requires reprocessing and homogenization to eliminate impacts of applied strategy and observation environmental changes where a selection of proper processing strategies is critical. This paper comprehensively investigates the influence of the mapping function, the elevation cut-off angle and homogenization on long-term reprocessing results, in particular for zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) products, using GPS observations at 44 IGS (International GNSS Service) stations during 1995 to 2014. In the analysis, for the first time, we included the mapping function (the latest Vienna mapping function, VMF3) and exploited homogenized radiosonde data as a reference for ZTD trend evaluations. Our analysis shows that both site position and ZTD solutions achieved the best accuracy when using VMF3 and the 3 ∘ elevation cut-off angle. Regarding the long-term ZTD trends, homogenization reduced the trend inconsistency among different elevation cut-off angles. ZTD trend results show that the impact of mapping functions is very small, with a maximum difference of 0.19 mm yr -1. On the other hand, the discrepancy can reach 0.60 mm yr -1 using different elevation cut-off angles. Low-elevation cut-off angles (3 ∘ or 7 ∘) are suggested for the best estimates of ZTD reprocessing time series when compared to homogenized radiosonde data or ERA5 reference time series. A dynamic development in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) has been observed in recent years. One of the manifestations of this trend is the integration of photovoltaic cells with tensile membrane structures, including canopies. Such solutions bring mutual benefits—the roofs provide a potentially large area for the application of photovoltaic cells while contributing to the improvement of the energy efficiency of the building. However, what is lacking is thorough research on the most favourable photovoltaic cell exposure within these roofs. This paper investigates the optimal position of photovoltaic cells in terms of energy gains related to exposure to solar radiation. Hypar geometries were simulated as the most characteristic of tensile membrane roofs and, simultaneously, the least obvious in the research context. Simulations were performed for 54 roof samples with the following geometric variables: roof height (1.0, 3.0 m) and membrane prestress (1:3, 1:1, 3:1). The research was conducted for three roof orientations defined by azimuth angles of 0, 22.5, and 45 degrees and three geographic locations, Oslo, Vienna, and Lisbon, representing Northern, Central, and Southern Europe, respectively. The Sofistik and Rhino + Ladybug software were used to create models and simulations. The study results show significant differences in the roof irradiation and, consequently, the optimal location of BIPVs depending on the above variables. Generally, it is the curvature that is the most important variable-less curved roofs are more irradiated and thus more suitable for BIPVs. Prestress and the azimuth angle are of lesser significance, but defining the optimal use of a BIPV depends on the adopted scenario regarding the percentage of membrane coverage with PVs—other recommendations concern the strategy of total or partial roof coverage with PV cells. This paper proposes a novel jerk circuit obtained by using an alternative nonlinear bipole component of inductor and diode in parallel. The circuit is described by five differential equations and investigated by the stability analysis, equilibria points, Kaplan–Yorke dimension, phase portraits, Lyapunov characteristic exponent estimation, bifurcation diagram and the 0–1 test chaos detection. The control parameter is adopted by varying the inductor L value, this system can display periodic orbit, quasi-periodic orbit and chaotic behavior. The dynamic influence of transit diode capacitance is done and this confirms the robustness of the system to noise influence. The validity of the numerical simulations is experimentally realized through the phase portraits of the circuit. Quite a few important Slovene politicians joined the Paneuropean Movement of Count Richard Nikolaus Coudenhove-Kalergi, established in Vienna in the early 1920s. This paper deals mainly with the role of Josip Vilfan, the leading political figure of the Slovene minority in the Fascist Italy and President of the Congress of European Nationalities, within the Paneuropean Union of Coudenhove-Kalergi. Together with Anton Korošec, the leading Slovene politician in Yugoslavia at the time, Vilfan also attended the 1st Congress of the Paneuropean Union in Vienna in October 1926 with representatives from 24 nations. In his paper, written upon personal invitation of Coudenhove-Kalergi, Vilfan described the establishment and initial activities of the Congress of European Nationalities. The Paneuropean Movement was very active in the Interwar-Yugoslavia. The Slovene press welcomed the announcement of the European federation that Aristide Briand drafted in 1930 at the request of the League of Nations. Briand was appointed Honorary President of the Paneuropean Union, and one of the consequences of his initiative was the establishment of the Yugoslav section of the Paneuropean Union, headed by Momčilo Ninčić, former foreign minister of Yugoslavia. The Slovene press covered the sway of Paneuropean Movement with outstanding attention. In October 1932, for example, the leading newspaper Slovenec published a series of articles on the 3rd Congress of the Paneuropean Union in Basel, which Vilfan also attended. However, his role was not so prominent as envisaged initially by Coudenhove-Kalergi. Reading Vilfan's letters to Coudenhove-Kalergi, one gets the impression that Vilfan was not ready to intensify relations between the Paneuropean Union and the Congress of European Nationalities. The expansion of the totalitarian regimes on the eve of the Second World War suppressed the activities of both organizations. In Hitler's "New Order" in Europe, there was no room for the Paneuropean cooperation based on the pr otection of minority rights. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the geographical and structural diffusion of "Viennese Monophthongization" (VM). By means of a new numerical measure to assess and compare formant movement in 18 lexical items, we provide evidence that VM is an ongoing, regular sound change transforming [aɛ̯] and [aɔ̯] gradually into [æː] and [ɒː]. Data are based on direct dialect recordings of 76 speakers in two age groups in 19 eastern and central Austrian rural locations. Results indicate that VM is diffusing from Vienna in a wave-like fashion. Even though VM is reported to have been established in other bigger cities for more than 30 years, the data show no evidence of diffusion from these cities. There are also other factors affecting the degree of formant movement: The phonetic-phonological environment (stress and the following consonant) explains most of the variance in the data, whereas no frequency effects could be found. In this paper, a Long-Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) Modified Best Channel Quality Indicator (M-BCQI) Scheduler is proposed for enhanced cell edge throughput performance. The scheduling algorithm utilizes two time slots, each of 0.5 ms in length, with the First Time Slot (FTS) implemented with the Best Channel Quality Indicator (BCQI) algorithm has a CQIfocused Resource Block (RB) allocation mechanism, while the Robin (RR) algorithm is the mechanism used in the Second Time Slot (STS) for RB allocation. Vienna LTE system level simulator was used for the proposed scheduling algorithm assessment. The results obtained showed significant improvement, indicating 44% superior cell edge performance and 56 % better fairness index in comparison to BCQI. However, MBCQI slightly underperformed by 4.2% in terms of average throughput in comparison to BCQI and by 7% in comparison to RR in terms of fairness index. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultra reliable low latency communication (URLLC) is a use case of 5G which requires high reliability and low latency. We need to evaluate the capability of various physical layer technologies in achieving such high quality of services (QoS) in realistic channels, so as to devise novel technologies which can bridge the gaps identified. In this paper, we are using VIENNA 5G simulator to achieve 5G URLLC, by combining system and link level simulations, using the third generation partnership project (3GPP) specifications for 5G. Extensive simulation data is analyzed to evaluate the QoS and radio resource efficiency of various physical layer techniques to achieve 5G URLLC. We calculate the threshold signal to noise ratio (SNR) in additive white Gaussian channel (AWGN) which can be used for link adaptation in URLLC when using short packets. Closed loop link adaptation and macro-diversity are found to be more effective methods to achieve high reliability as compared to open loop micro-diversity. Relaxed error target per macro-diversity link is shown to provide better radio resource efficiency as compared to using same error target for all links. It is also shown that flexible subcarrier spacing and mini-slot level scheduling can support required transmission delay so as to meet the target end-to-end latency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this contribution, I argue that describing our interviewing and data analysis still needs some reflection: It is a fine cuvée (ending the vinophile metaphor here) that you might want to get a taste of herewith: Discussing qualitative interviewing deepens the understanding of the kind of interviewing Kathy Charmaz proposed while building explicitly on its traditions within social scientific hermeneutics. Charmaz was kind enough to refer to my work – so it is my honour to proceed with my thinking following our time together in Vienna. In this paper, I will focus on the way of doing qualitative interviews that in the end leads to a data quality that, to the largest extent possible, fits our exigencies in interpretively oriented research. Put in a nutshell, we are seeking an interview form that puts the interview partners at the core of the communicative act and in the drivers' seats of the interview situation. We thus end up with interview material that is rich in stories told and connections made at the free choice of the participants. This stands in contrast to the idea that qualitative interviews should always be based on interview guidelines. The latter can be clearly differentiated from the interpretive interview style proposed here – and is per se not a bad choice as long as it fits the overall methodology and the ensuing research interests. Traditionally, individuals and firms have bought and owned resources. For instance, owning a car was a status symbol for people. In recent years, this focus has changed. Young people just want to have some convenient means of transportation available. Sharing cars, bikes, or rides is also acceptable and has the advantage of increased sustainability compared with everyone owning such a device. A similar development can also be observed in industry. Already for decades, smaller farmers in rural areas have shared some expensive harvesting machines, via cooperatives. In recent years, cost pressures have incentivized all firms to use their equipment more efficiently and to avoid idle capacities. This has led, among other things, to the exchange of transportation requests between smaller carriers, when one of them faces an overload situation and another has idle resources. Similarly, some production firms share storage space and logistics service providers operate this storage jointly with greater efficiency than each firm could do separately. All these tendencies have led to the development of a new paradigm, the "Sharing Economy." In transportation, these resources are the vehicles used to deliver goods or move passengers. Given an increasing pressure to act economically and ecologically sustainable, efficient mechanisms that help to benefit from idle capacities are on the rise. They are typically organized through digital platforms that facilitate the efficient exchange of goods or services and help cope with data privacy issues. Both transportation companies and heavy users of transportation services need to learn how to play in a world of shared idle capacities. "Transportation in the Sharing Economy" was the theme of the 2019 Transportation Science and Logistics Workshop held in Vienna, and it is therefore also the focus of this associated special issue. The papers included cover several forms of shared resources in transportation, where the first part deals with freight, whereas in the second part, the focus lies on passenger transportation. Each study highlights the benefits of sharing resources. We received 40 submissions, of which 10 papers were accepted for this special issue after the reviewing process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper takes a fresh look at the global spread of the Chinese–Taiwanese new religious movement Yiguandao (一貫道; the emic transcription is "I-Kuan Tao") by directing attention to the concrete places where transnational connections and interactions actually transpire, i.e., temples, shrines, and other sites of worship. Emically known as "Buddha halls" (fotang 佛堂), these places range from large-scale temple complexes, to small niches of worship in people's private residences. Yet, they all share the potential of becoming venues of transregional interactions through processes of migration, the circulation of personnel, and local outreach. I argued that we need to take the distinct character of these localities more seriously, in order to fully understand the global networks of Yiguandao groups. Through their specific embeddedness in both local affairs and transnational projects, these temples are not simply local chapters of the (mostly) Taiwanese headquarters, but instead they are "translocalities" or even "portals of globalization"—two concepts developed in migration and global studies to help understand the significance of place in the recent phase of so-called globalization. By exploring Yiguandao temples across the globe, this paper critically evaluated these approaches, and their usefulness for the study of global religions. Empirically, it drew on both print and online material, as well as ethnographic fieldwork conducted by the author in Taiwan, Vienna (Austria), California, South Africa, and Japan from 2016 to 2018. The tree-ring lab at BOKU University, Vienna, Austria has been sampling and dating by means of dendrochronology in the eastern part of Austria since 1996. Among other objects, the roof constructions of 982 historical buildings were analysed, resulting in 13 916 samples. The time span extends from the oldest roof truss at a church in Salzburg, dated to 1135, to the youngest in Vienna, dated to 1997. The aim of present paper is to provide an overview of the findings on historical roof constructions in Austria based on data collected over the last 27 years. Out of the total sample elements, 69.0% were made out of Norway spruce, followed by silver fir with 19.6%. All other species played a minor role: pine (5.0%), larch (3.6%), oak (2.7%), followed by a few elements made of stone pine, elm, beech, and poplar. The proportion of wood species reflects the significant influence of alpine regions. Within the city of Vienna, where all building timber was rafted, the amount of spruce wood is 72.3%. There were no clear visible changes in the wood species share over time. Along with dendro-dating, building historians have been analyzing the typology of roof trusses and the changes within time. It was possible to see clear alterations from simple rafter constructions to huge multi-level constructions with standing and sometimes hanging columns and roof constructions with lying posts (in the plane of the rafters) that transition back to constructions with standing columns. Urban environment management (UEM) and environmental social science (ESS) are two interconnected approaches that show significant potential for creating more sustainable and liveable cities. Their research has, however, been mainly disjointed, which may be because planning and policy have placed more emphasis on UEM than ESS at the same time. This research examined ESS in terms of the quality of life (QOL) criteria and sense of place (SOP) of citizens living by the river with the UEM intervention in the form of policies and programmes. The effects of fieldwork in the form of specialised and spatial interviews are presented in this research, which is usually ignored in the literature review of this type of analysis. The study aims to fill the current gap in this field in three European capitals by providing a reflective methodological account of fieldwork and the 'elite interviewing' approach. This paper produces a distinct form of the localisation of the research and sampling techniques and is as new, interactive and developing as possible. The results of the present study are underpinned by the conceptual model of research, which supports the main aim of this analysis and tries to examine the components of research in a new perspective. The findings highlighted that maintaining and strengthening ESS for citizens living next to rivers require innovative UEM, which uses urban creativity in the field of goals, urban settlements, strategies and management solutions to provide the base for increasing the liveability of the city and improving the quality of urban life. The map of Moravia (1569) by the renowned Vienna scholar, Paulus Fabricius (ca. 1528-1589), is still considered to be the oldest known cartographic representation of Moravia. This paper focuses on the cartographic analysis of the map with the aim to identify possible methods of its construction with regard to some known circumstances of its origin. The author of the map mentions in the appended texts that he travelled through Moravia several times. The methodology of the work is based on selected spatial analyses of the positional and height aspects of displayed settlements. The achieved results are compared and discussed in the context of other information sources, especially the existing settlement structure and contemporary communication network. The conclusions reveal a correlation between the density of the depicted settlements and the proximity of a modelled communication network. The orographic conditions of Moravia have a significant influence on the map content. The plains are covered in detail, hilly lands and highlands are rarely and randomly mapped, whereas the mountains are not described at all. In the peripheral parts of the area of interest, the author probably worked only with data from travel itineraries. With regard to achieved results, it can be assumed that there is potential to apply the established procedures to the analysis of old maps of similar type. The paper presents an Ottoman map, which in one part shows in more detail the area of the Bosnian eyalet with its surroundings, i.e. parts of the area of early modern Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its author is Haji Khalifa or Katib Çelebi, an Ottoman historian and bibliographer from the mid-17th century. The map is in the autograph of the first version of his work Cosmography (Cihânnümâ) from 1648, preserved in the Austrian National Library in Vienna. The aim of the paper was to establish how the mentioned geographical area was observed by the Ottoman cartographer, what is the possible reason for the creation of the map and what were the sources of information contained in it. As the map was made during the Candian War, after the fall of Klis into Venetian hands in 1648, it is possible that the author himself made the map with the aim of visualizing the Ottoman border in the Dalmatian hinterland and explaining its significance in the Ottoman centre. Solid precision in positioning and listing local toponyms, the direction of providing road communications as well as the content of marginal notes on the map, indicate that the author probably consulted someone familiar with local circumstances. The paper analyses time series of thermal growing season (GS) start (GSS) and end dates (GSE) and length (GSL) in three cities representing urbanised areas of Central Europe (Kraków, Prague, Vienna) in the period 1792–2020. The classification of dates of growing season start and end, as well as length of the designated growing seasons, was conducted from climate data. An attempt was made to identify the dominant patterns of GS course, considering its start date, length, and end date collectively. In the period 1972–2020 in Central Europe, the growing season was prolonged, although the changes in particular stations selected for analysis occurred unevenly and simultaneously resulted from different causes. Three subperiods can be designated, differing in the intensity of changes in the start and end dates, as well as growing season length. The intensification of the rate of the occurring changes was recorded in all stations at the end of the twentieth and in the twenty-first century. There is a trend of decreasing frequency of short and abnormally short periods and more and more frequent occurrence of long and abnormally long seasons in the analysed multiannual period. Regardless of the differences between the stations in the designated GS types, the shortest of them were observed simultaneously at all three analysed stations in the period 1830–1860 and at the beginning of the twentieth century. This paper starts by discussing the specific use of Orientalism in the Romanian culture. Focus is laid upon the Romanian scholar Dimitrie Cantemir (1673-1723), the first Christian historian who was allowed to use the Ottoman archives for his work. Then Ienăchiţă Văcărescu or Kelemen Mikes offer alternative Orientalist discourses. Unfortunately, Said's seminal essay neglects everything that is East of Vienna in terms of Orientalism. Criticizing the binary opposition West-Orient, in fact Said reiterates it in his work by neglecting the Eastern European periphery. The conclusion is that Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) offers interesting examples of Orientalisms where the power relationships are constructed differently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Formed from the westernmost territories of Hungary, Burgenland became a part of Austria a hundred years ago. The aim of the paper is to answer the question of how Burgenland became integrated into the Austrian society and economy, how its regional inequalities and rural character changed in comparison to the neighbouring Austrian and Hungarian areas, under the influence of Vienna's major role. The analysis is based on the census data of 1910, 1960/61, 2001 and 2011 and on the mapping of different social and economic indicators. Our data revealed that one hundred years ago, the northern, more prosperous area of Western Hungary was an integral part of the rural hinterland of the imperial capital, Vienna, in stark contrast to the region's southern periphery. After World War II, however, a steep west-east gradient emerged in the borderland along the Iron Curtain, while the traditional north-south disparity continued to exist on both sides of the new border. During the political transformation in the early 1990s, and even more after Hungary's EU accession (2004), the former hard border ceased to exist in this region, while Vienna regained its former economic importance and influence. After 1990, the patterns of regional disparities changed rapidly in Hungary, and the western part achieved a leading position within Hungary in every dimension of economic prosperity. In line with this, while the Austrian rural regions in Burgenland and between Vienna and Graz showed remarkable infrastructural progress, Southern Burgenland remained peripheral regarding economic activity. Once in Vienna to get an education, the young Romanians that left Bukovina, be they sons of boyars, priests, peasants, or public servants, often found themselves in awe. One way or another, they soon experienced a hard time getting board and lodgings. To make ends meet, they had to pawn their belongings or borrow money, which spelled trouble for all of them. Consequently, their food choice and cooking skills welcome a cultural studies approach that reveals their worldview, identity or history proper. Taking into account mostly unknown memoirs, diaries and letters, the present paper aims to give insight into the eating habits and the world of young Bukovinians living in Vienna. Fitted within a chronological sequence, the case studies under scrutiny range from the Hurmuzachi brothers (Constantin, Eudoxiu, Gheorghe), Eminescu, and the so-called ‘Bukovinian colony’ to Ciprian Porumbescu and, eventually, Leca Morariu. Strangely enough, Morariu, although wounded in WWI, is the only one who managed to eat well while in Vienna. However, both his war and Vienna diaries are meaningful from many other perspectives than his meals. Albert Grunow (1826-1914) was a prolific diatomist, who described thousands of taxa. His work is foundational and greatly improved our knowledge of diatom taxonomy. Grunow's historical collection is still relevant for modern biodiversity research, as it includes many types and other historical material. Thorough taxonomic work considering type and other relevant original material is critical in view of the role of diatoms as aquatic bio-indicator species (e. g. for water quality monitoring purposes), Earth's history, and environmental change modelling. Here, we introduce the Grunow diatom collection at the Department of Botany of the Natural History Museum Vienna (herbarium W), its components and included object types, their organisation and management. The collection is complex for various reasons. For one, it encompasses a great variety of material types (e. g. loose diatomaceous earth in capsules; samples mounted on card, glass, or mica; microscope slides and other preparations; drawings; accession books (= catalogue); literature annotated by Grunow). Second, its components are interlinked and need to be considered together for identifying and locating specimens, which therefore involves a series of steps. Third, Grunow's collection includes a lot of material sent to him by other collectors, resulting in various numbering systems for collector vs sample numbers that need to be reconciled, often across multiple institutions. The aim of this paper is to detail this complexity for facilitating material requests to the W herbarium by giving a step by step example pinpointing original and other historical material of Achnanthes inflata (KÜTZING) GRUNOW. The main standard for avionic equipment DO-160G defines a set of tests that require compliance before the employment of a device in aircraft. An important test involves the generator voltage and consequential current distortion of the three-phase load in the variable 360–800 Hz frequency grid. The main purpose of this paper is to present and analyze a systematic design methodology for three-phase boost and buck rectifiers in order to meet with the voltage distortion test requirement. For a given voltage harmonic profile, the current harmonic limits that have to be satisfied are translated into equivalent per-harmonic admittances and a profile of maximum rectifier input admittance versus frequency is obtained. The defined profile, due to normalization, is applicable to arbitrary power level with simple shifting by the base admittance governed by the converter nominal power. It is shown that for boost-type rectifiers there is a tradeoff between current controller bandwidth and input inductor size, while for the buck-type rectifiers main limitation lies in the input LC filter design used for differential electromagnetic interference filtering. The experimental results conducted on an SiC three-phase 10 kW VIENNA rectifier are tightly backing up the proposed theoretical analysis. This paper is accompanied by three videos demonstrating experimental measurement of d-axis open-loop duty cycle to inductor current transfer function, loop-gain of d-axis current controller with 3.8 kHz bandwidth and variable grid frequency 360–800 Hz operation of the converter under 0% and 10% input three-phase voltage total harmonic distortion. In his paper "Über das Bewegungsbild von Faltengebirgen" [On the movement pattern of folded mountains], published in the almanac of the Austrian Geological Survey in Vienna, Otto Ampferer from Innsbruck (Austria) presented a series of geotectonic considerations and interpretations, which today are summarized under the term "theory of undercurrent". The interpretation of these processes occurring in the deep crust of the Earth and in the upper mantle was mainly kinematic. For a long time, the tectonic passivity of the magma being anorogenic was dogma until Ampferer's undercurrent theory changed this in 1906, according to which folds and thrusts on the Earth's surface portray motions of the deeper magmatic substratum. In these undercurrents, Ampferer recognized the crucial forces that lead to the formation of ocean basins and high mountains on the edges of the drifting continents. In his paper on the history of the formation of the Atlantic region, he presented already, in 1941, a process anticipating what is now known as seafloor spreading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates a Vienna rectifier as a charger for series-connected battery packs. Focusing on carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (CBPWM), the ripple current flowing through the neutral point (NP) results in the voltage oscillation if the loads are resistive. To reduce the ripple of average NP current with mitigated distortion under balanced and unbalanced dc-link voltages conditions, a novel CBPWM with segmented component injection scheme (SCIS) is proposed in this paper. After dc component injection, continuous intervals for optimized component injection and clamping intervals for compensation component injection are identified. Optimized components are calculated originally based on unbalanced factor to make the average NP current zero-size in one switching period. Moreover, unique compensation components generate suitable NP current to shape the sinusoidal input currents according to the circuit analysis. In consequence, the SCIS not only keeps the input current with low-harmonic distortion, but also minimizes the oscillation of dc-link voltage under balanced and unbalanced conditions. In addition, the value of the NP current during the clamping intervals is analyzed under various operating conditions. Nowadays, most lost and forgotten cemeteries and burial sites in Vienna are re-discovered by accident during the course of building works. This was the case at the Schottenstift in central Vienna, where in 2002 (during construction work in the courtyard of the monastery) a previously unknown burial site was discovered. The individuals were placed in ten tightly packed layers, suggesting this was a mass grave. At least 388 individuals and a small number of artifacts related to the clothing of the individuals were recovered, but the origin and date of the burial site remained unclear due to the lack of written sources. Thus, in 2017 an interdisciplinary project of the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Natural History Museum of Vienna (Anthropological Department), as well as the Forschungsgesellschaft Wiener Stadtarchäologie, and the Schottenstift Archive began, focusing on the reappraisal of the mass grave. In order to clarify the origin of the burial site, the project combined historical and archaeological research as well as modern bioarchaeological methods. Because the historical and archaeological analyses are still largely pending, this paper presents the results of the anthropological examination of a selected sample of 100 individuals. The analysis revealed that predominantly males and infants were present, all of which show skeletal evidence of poor health and living conditions. The lack of perimortem trauma, indicating an act of warfare or violence, suggests that an epidemic plague is the most reasonable cause for this mass interment. Although there is no direct written source within the Schottenstift Archive, the mass grave may be linked to the Great Plague of Vienna in 1678, confirmed with radiocarbon of skeletal and archaeological remains between 1650 and 1725 AD. Despite the limited sample size, the anthropological research within this project has enabled new insights in the socio-cultural background and the evolution of disease of the Early Modern Period, contributing to the urban development of Vienna, as it is known today. The article consists of two parts: the introduction and a collective translation of an address delivered by Enea Silvio Piccolomini on 25 November 1445 in Vienna, and published subsequently. Currently referred to as Quodlibet Viennense, Aderat nuper oration or Piccolomini's letter 104, the speech follows the convention of a free dispute (de quolibet). Its content and circumstances of the oration have been dealt with by Alphons Lhotsky, Guido Kisch, Michael Cotta-Schönberg and Juliusz Domański in their texts devoted to Piccolomini. The author refers to these works, focusing especially on the latest edition of Cotta-Schönberg (made public on the Internet) and Domański's findings, as well as makes references to the 15th century incunabula items. The introduction presents the circumstances of Piccolomini's stay at the Vienna court of Frederick III in the 1440s. It also discusses texts in which Piccolomini shared his views on poetry, and goes on to characterise the structure of the de quolibet dispute in comparison to the speech under scrutiny, which reveals several differences between a typical quodlibet and Piccolomini's text. Additionally, the question is raised about the presence and role of a third person involved in the process of writing down a spoken text, which is today known from print mainly. The topics touched upon by Piccolomini's address are also discussed. The orator replies to three questions that he has been asked, the most important of which is the second one, as evidenced by the space devoted to it. The three questions oscillate around i) ethical issues, i.e. alleged equipollence of knowledge on ethics (scientia moralis) with prudence (prudentia), ii) insufficient, but according to Piccolomini necessary presence of poets in social life and defence of poetry against accusations of immorality, and iii) high prices of such writing materials as paper and parchment. The translated text was created collectively during a Neo-Latin studies seminar carried out by Professor Juliusz Domański in the Institute of Classical Studies at the University of Warsaw in the academic cycles 2008/2009 and 2009/2010. The Korčula Town Museum houses a fortepiano, a historic wing-shaped piano with hammers of great significance. It was produced in Nannette Streicher's workshop in Vienna in 1819 under number 1319. Angelo Boschi (1790-1854) bought it in 1839 for his son Ivan (Giovanni; 1821-1902), who used it to perform a diverse musical repertoire in the salon of the family palace in Korčula. This is evidenced by the Collection of Music Materials in the Korčula Town Museum, which, for the most part, consists of music owned by Ivan Boschi. The Collection includes, among others, numerous piano exercises, sonatas, opera excerpts, dance and chamber music, as well as Boschi's own compositions. It confirms that Boschi was conversant with current music trends, his role in the development of musical life of Korčula, and his desire to introduce and bring closer the culture and practice present on the other side of the Adriatic. Nannette Streicher's fortepiano is notable not only for being one of the few preserved fortepianos from the first quarter of the 19th century in Croatia, but one of the few that have been restored (which was done in 2019). For now, it is the only known Nannette Streicher instrument in Croatia. It can be considered as one of the most valuable fortepianos made at the end of the 18th and the first third of the 19th century that are kept in the holdings of Croatian museums, alongside fortepianos made by Anton Walter (Cultural History Museum of Dubrovnik Museums, c. 1790), Michael Rosenberger (Varaždin City Museum, c. 1810), and Conrad Graf (Castle Trakošćan, 1835; Museum of Slavonia in Osijek, 1838 or 1839). Serbian clubs in Vienna are cultural, artistic, and sports organisations formed in the 1970s by Yugoslav guest workers, then called Yugoslav clubs. Since the 1990s, due to significant socio-political changes in the home country, the work policies of clubs in Vienna have changed, and they have become Serbian clubs. To learn traditional singing within the folklore sections of the mentioned clubs, the leaders hire pedagogues from Serbia – ethnomusicologists or individuals with completed secondary music schools in the departments of traditional singing. This paper aims to present and analyse several aspects of learning traditional singing in these institutions, focusing on the exchange of different forms of capital - from economic to symbolic and vice versa and reviewing the role of individuals in these systems. Mathematician and member of the Society of Jesus Franjo Ksaver Staindl (1746 - 1818) was born in Križevci, and entered the Jesuit novitiate in Vienna. He specialized in mathematics in Graz. The paper presents previously unknown biographical information and discusses why Franjo Ks. Staindl should be attributed the independent authorship of the textbook Institutiones arithmeticae in usum gymnasiorum st scholarum grammaticarum, which was in use in Croatian countries at the end of the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th century translated into Croatian by Ambroz Matić. In 2020, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused major limitations for any aspect of social life and in specific for all events that require a gathering of people. While most events of this kind can be postponed or cancelled, democratic elections are key elements of any democratic regime and should be upheld if at all possible. Consequently, proper planning is required to establish the highest possible level of safety to both voters and scrutineers. In this paper, we present the novel and innovative way how the municipal council and district council elections in Vienna were planned and conducted using an discrete event simulation model. Key target of this process was to avoid queues in front of polling stations to reduce the risk of related infection clusters. In cooperation with a hygiene expert, we defined necessary precautions that should be met during the election in order to avoid the spread of COVID-19. In a next step, a simulation model was established and parametrized and validated using data from previous elections. Furthermore, the planned conditions were simulated to see whether excessive queues in front of any polling stations could form, as these could on the one hand act as an infection herd, and on the other hand, turn voters away. Our simulation identified some polling stations where long queues could emerge. However, splitting up these electoral branches resulted in a smooth election across all of Vienna. Looking back, the election did not lead to a significant increase of COVID-19 incidences. Therefore, it can be concluded that careful planning led to a safe election, despite the pandemic. As a result, we show by using classical nonlinear dynamic tools like bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponent plots, phase portraits, power density spectra graphs, time series, and basin of attraction that the oscillator transition to chaos is operated by intermittency and interior crisis. Some interesting behaviors are found, namely, multistability, hyperchaos, transient chaos, and bursting oscillations. In comparison with some memristor-based oscillators, the plethora of dynamics found in this circuit with current-voltage (i–v) characteristic of diodes mounted in the antiparallel direction represents a major advance in the knowledge of the behavior of this circuit. When introducing new mobility offers or measures to influence traffic, stated preference (SP) surveys are often used to assess their impact. In SP surveys, respondents do not answer questions about their actual behaviour, but about hypothetical settings. Therefore, answers are often biased. To minimise this hypothetical bias, so-called stated preference-off-revealed preference (SP-off-RP) surveys were developed. They base SP questions on respondents' revealed behaviour and place unknown scenarios in a familiar context. Until now, this method was applied mostly to scenarios investigating the willingness to pay. The application to more complex mode or route choice problems, which require the calculation of routes, has not yet been done. In this paper, the MyTrips survey tool for the collection of SP-off-RP data based on respondents' actual mobility behaviour is presented. SP questions are based on alternatives to typical routes of respondents, which are calculated on the fly with an intermodal router. MyTrips includes a larger survey and collects mobility diaries for one day representing respondents' daily routine, calculates alternative routes and creates SP questions based on a Bayesian optimal design. Results from two case studies investigating behaviour changes are presented. The first case study investigated the extension of a subway line in Vienna, Austria. The second case study focused on the introduction of micro transit vehicles in a rural setting, replacing infrequent bus services. Results of the two case studies show a difference in response behaviour between SP and RP settings and suggest a reduction of hypothetical bias. For the latter study, a Latent Class SP-off-RP model was estimated. It shows that availability and accessibility of public transport are the main influences on the willingness to use it, independent of other household characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new approach for spatial modelling of transport mode choice is presented in the paper. The approach tackles the problem by considering the trade-off between subjective and objective factors. To obtain mode Preference Rates (PRs) based on subjective factors, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is applied. The objective factors are expressed with the journey time from any point in the map to destination according to the available transport mode choice on the specific connection. The results are presented as PRs of individual transport modes. The model is validated on the conducted the survey, with students of Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) as a target audience. Members of different target groups (age, national, employment) decide differently regarding the transport choice, so it is better to analyse them separately. The presented model can be used for the city transport planning in any urban area. It can help promote the sustainable modes of transport in the areas that are less adjusted in sustainable manner. In contrast with the contemporary spirit, which directs a person towards their own needs, satisfactions, and desires, logotherapy views the person and its life as an assignment. Man is not an individual "for himself" (according to Freud, the main internal motivational force is "the will of pleasure" and "the will of power" according to Adler), but a being of sense or a being for someone or something. According to Frankl, the purpose is defined as tasks, which life sets us in a precise moment and in a precise situation. These are tasks requiring a responsible reaction and a specific realisation of values. Each of them is unique. Each individual is responsible for a task, and only he can respond to it in a responsible manner. In this sense, life can be seen as a chain, whose links are the tasks themselves. Each individual is unique, with a unique goal in life, which consists of individual, equally unique tasks. The centre of logotherapy is future - tasks and meanings. The founder of logotherapy is Viktor E. Frankl, who was a doctor of medicine and doctor of philosophy, and a professor of neurology and psychiatry at the University of Vienna. The third psychotherapeutic school in Vienna - logotherapy - is based on a holistic approach to an individual, which means that it analyses a person on a physical, mental, and spiritual level. Spiritual dimension is, among others, a place of realisation of responsibility and freedom or space of realisation of actual possibilities and tasks. Existential crisis, existential vacuum, and noogenic neuroses are issues and mental problems, which originate from the spiritual dimension. This means failing to perceive and failing in life as an assignment. The empirical part of the research, which is based on the psychometric instrument LOGO-test, performed on two hundred respondents, gave us the results that even 24 percent of respondents are in various mental distresses and seriously existentially endangered. The paper highlights the most problematic areas and causes for such mental distress. The COVID-19 pandemic only deepened and revealed this crisis of meaning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses mainly on the representatives of calcareous nannofossils and invertebrates from the Hrvaćani section of the Middle Miocene (Badenian) (Prnjavor Basin, southern margin of Pannonian Basin), and it defines the time of Badenian transgression in this area. Rich resources of fossil mollusk species, isolated parts of coral colonies, and other invertebrate remains were found in the investigated section. Moreover, turtle remains from marine sediments at the southern margin of Central Paratethys were recorded for the first time. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy has established an NN5 Zone by the presence of Sphenolithus heteromorphus and the absence of Helicosphaera ampliaperta. The foraminifera associations from the analyzed sandstones belong to the Lower Badenian, namely the older zones of Ammonia viennensis and Elphidium crispum (the equivalent of Lagenidae Zone of Vienna Basin). The specimen of a turtle is currently attributed to order Testudines (suborder Pleurodira). From a stratigraphic and paleoecological point of view, all the fossil assemblages showed similar patterns for the subject of study, reflecting favorable conditions for developing a subtropical fauna in the open shallow marine environment. Consequently, by combining nannofossils, foraminifers, corals, malacological, and herpetological data, we can conclude that the early Middle Miocene (Badenian) in Hrvaćani (Bosnia) corresponds to the Lagenidae Zone (NN5 Zone) and was characterized by a relatively warm climate. The synthesis of convincing acoustic drum sounds remains an open problem. In this paper, a method for analysing and synthesising pitch glide in drums is proposed, whereby the discrete cosine transform (DCT) of an unwindowed drum sound is modelled. This is an extension of the scheme initially proposed by Kirby and Sandler [(2020). Proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Digital Audio Effects, Vienna, Austria, pp. 155–162], which was able to reproduce key components of drum sounds accurately enough that they could not be distinguished from the reference samples. Here, drum modes were analysed in greater detail for a tom-tom struck at 67 different intensities to investigate their evolution with strike velocity. A clear evolution was observed in the DCT features, and interpolation was used to synthesise the modes of intermediate velocity. These synthesised modes were evaluated objectively through null testing, which showed that a continuous blending of strike velocities could be achieved throughout the data set. An AB listening test was also performed, where 20 participants attempted to distinguish between pairs of real and synthesised sounds. Exactly 50% accuracy was achieved overall, which demonstrates that the synthesised samples were deemed to sound as realistic as genuine samples. These results demonstrate that the DCT representation is a valuable framework for analysis and synthesis of drum sounds. It is also likely that this approach could be applied to other instruments. The use of modified lime slurry as a sacrificial layer to protect the original porous substrate has a long tradition in the practice of building and monument conservation in Austria. This paper presents the results of analyses performed on the Natural History Museum Vienna to get more insight into the long-term performance of this conservation method. Stone surfaces on the facade and roof area, covered with an acrylic tempered lime sacrificial layer and subsequently made water-repellent, were tested in situ and in the laboratory. Whilst coatings in the exposed zones were completely vanished in certain areas, the samples from the facade were in a good condition even after nearly twenty years of exposure. Hydrophobic activity could be verified up to a depth of five mm in the porous stone substrates. Despite the general good state of preservation of most surfaces, the existence of highly hydrophobic substrates will definitely restrict the implementation of any future sustainable conservation effort. The paper examines the current scholarly insights about the beginnings of the official development of Croatian military terminology from the second half of the 19th century, primarily about the uniqueness of the role of Bogoslav Šulek as its founder. The research of primary sources proves that Šulek - although a pivotal figure in military terminography efforts - was not the only creator of the Croatian military lexis. By studying the archives in Zagreb and Vienna, a number of authors came to light, who translated military manuals into Croatian amid the dynamic establishment of the Croatian Home Guard. Moreover, in addition to numerous military literature titles, they also published two pioneering military-language manuals. The authors belonged to the Home Guard officer's teaching staff, so Šulek stood as the only non-military person among them. The new configuration of those responsible for the establishment of Croatian military terminology reveals how some important titles have so far been wrongly attributed to Šulek, but also points to new insights into the scope of Šulek's opus and the availability of his titles. The comparison of officers' translations with those of Bogoslav Šulek completes the mosaic of the linguistic conception of the construction of Croatian military terminology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
