As quantum computing technology improves and quantum computers with a small but nontrivial number of N≥100 qubits appear feasible in the near future the question of possible applications of small quantum computers gains importance. One frequently mentioned application is Feynman's original proposal of simulating quantum systems and, in particular, the electronic structure of molecules and materials. In this paper, we analyze the computational requirements for one of the standard algorithms to perform quantum chemistry on a quantum computer. We focus on the quantum resources required to find the ground state of a molecule twice as large as what current classical computers can solve exactly. We find that while such a problem requires about a 10-fold increase in the number of qubits over current technology, the required increase in the number of gates that can be coherently executed is many orders of magnitude larger. This suggests that for quantum computation to become useful for quantum chemistry problems, drastic algorithmic improvements will be needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Both fast and accurate block-matching algorithms are critical to efficient compression of video frames using motion estimation and compensation. While the particle swarm optimization approach holds the promise of alleviating the local optima problem suffered typically by existing very fast block matching methods, motion estimation algorithms based on particle swarm optimization in the literature appear to be either much slower than some leading fast block-matching methods for a given accuracy of motion estimation, or less accurate for a given computational complexity. In this paper, we show that the conventional particle swarm optimization approach, which was originally designed to solve general optimization problems where fast convergence of the algorithm might not be a primary concern, could be modified appropriately so that it could provide accurate motion estimation with very low computational cost in the specific context of video motion estimation. To this end, we proposed a new block matching algorithm based on a set of strategies adapted from the standard particle swarm optimization approach. Extensive simulations showed that the proposed method could achieve significant improvements over leading fast block matching methods including the diamond search and the cross-diamond search methods, in terms of both estimation accuracy and computational cost. In particular, the proposed method based on particle swarm optimization is not only much faster, but also remarkably more accurate (about 2dB higher in terms of the Peak Signal-to-Noise-Ratio) than the competing methods on video sequences with large motion. Abstract: In this paper, the concept of proportionate adaptation is extended to the normalized subband adaptive filter (NSAF), and seven proportionate normalized subband adaptive filter algorithms are established. The proposed algorithms are proportionate normalized subband adaptive filter (PNSAF), PNSAF (MPNSAF), improved PNSAF (IPNSAF), the improved IPNSAF (IIPNSAF), the set-membership IPNSAF (SM-IPNSAF), the selective partial update IPNSAF (SPU-IPNSAF), and SM-SPU-IPNSAF which are suitable for sparse system identification in network echo cancellation. When the impulse response of the echo path is sparse, the PNSAF has initial faster convergence than NSAF but slows down dramatically after initial convergence. The MPNSAF algorithm has fast convergence speed during the whole adaptation. The IPNSAF algorithm is suitable for both sparse and dispersive impulse responses. The SM-IPNSAF exhibits good performance with significant reduction in the overall computational complexity compared with the ordinary IPNSAF. In SPU-IPNSAF, the filter coefficients are partially updated rather than the entire filter at every adaptation. In SM-SPU-IPNSAF algorithm, the concepts of SM and SPU are combined which leads to a reduction in computational complexity. The simulation results show good performance of the proposed algorithms. Abstract: This paper describes a new algorithm for the generation of pseudo random numbers with approximate self-similar structure. The Simple Self-Similar Sequences Generator (4SG) elaborates on an intuitive approach to obtain a fast and accurate procedure, capable of reproducing series of points exhibiting the property of persistence and anti-persistence. 4SG has a computational complexity of and memory requirements of the order of , where is the number of points to be generated. The accuracy of the algorithm is evaluated by means of computer-based simulations, recurring to several Hurst parameter estimators, namely Variance Time (VT) and the Wavelets-based estimator. The Hosking and the Wavelets-based methods for the generation of self-similar series were submitted to the same tests the 4SG was analysed with, providing for a basis for comparison of several performance aspects of the algorithm. Results show that the proposal embodies a good candidate not only for on-demand emulation of arbitrarily long self-similar sequences, but also for fast and efficient online simulations. Abstract: This paper presents theoretical foundations of global Krylov subspace methods for model order reductions. This method is an extension of the standard Krylov subspace method for multiple-inputs multiple-outputs (MIMO) systems. By employing the congruence transformation with global Krylov subspaces, both one-sided Arnoldi and two-sided Lanczos oblique projection methods are explored for both single expansion point and multiple expansion points. In order to further reduce the computational complexity for multiple expansion points, adaptive-order multiple points moment matching algorithms, or the so-called rational Krylov space method, are also studied. Two algorithms, including the adaptive-order rational global Arnoldi (AORGA) algorithm and the adaptive-order global Lanczos (AOGL) algorithm, are developed in detail. Simulations of practical dynamical systems will be conducted to illustrate the feasibility and the efficiency of proposed methods. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
