In this intriguing but frustrating book, Jon Mills tries to do three things. However, Mills, like so many new atheists, misunderstands the issue of scientific meaning, in stating that "[t]he God question is not a legitimate scientific topic because it does not meet the basic requisite of falsifiability through testability." Mills struggles to uphold a standard something like this, but in the end the need to falsify religion wins the day, as exemplified by the following statement: "There is no evidentiary or verifiable proof for believing that God is anything but an idea" (p. 75). This research paper explores how and why the existing tradition of supernatural stories about ghosts and other fantastical creatures, which located terror as an external factor in these unnatural and malignant beings, was transformed in the early to mid-Nineteenth Century into tales that are instead focused on fear in terms of the internal psychology of the narrator and the protagonist. It investigates two well-known examples of psychological horror, E.TA. Hoffmann's "The Sandman" (1816) and Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" (1843). The research paper deploys a contextual historical approach examining the impact of Romanticism as a philosophy focusing on the individual's mental state and extreme psychological situations, as well as developing scientific ideas about psychology in the period. In my argument it is "madness" (which could affect anyone in society) that became the new fear that haunted and fascinated society, replacing the explicitly external supernatural. I also use Tzvetan Todorov's structuralist theory and model of "the fantastic" and suggest it is possible for a psychological tale to be fantastic in a different way than he envisages, insofar as madness is itself an experience where the victim is never sure if what they experience is real or unreal. This paper discusses the Taiwanese woman poet Ye Hong 葉紅's poems about death, attempting to articulate her perspective on death and what it means in her poetry. Based on her poetry linking psychiatric treatment with death writing, this paper further explains how the poet employs the imagery of death and poetry writing as an escape from life crisis. In the case of Ye Hong, literature as psychiatric treatment did serve to soothe her melancholia and prevent her from losing her capability of speaking. At the same time, she also attempted to save herself by writing about death, that is, by sublimating the death drive by incessantly refashioning the signs of death in her poems. Ye’s death, however, indicates the impossibility of redemption through writing: poetry can never be a substitute for medical treatment. Nevertheless, considering the eternal value of literary work, we may conclude that literature is Ye’s afterlife, through which readers can overcome her physical death by returning again and again to her narrative of death before she died. This paper studies this book under four headings; general moral theology, political ethics, family ethics and the relation of this book's theology to the Augustinian tradition.
