Abstract

The article looks at examples of surface combatant ships deployed to the East and South China Seas in the context of tensions around contested sovereignty claims over groups of islands. Topics include the Air Warfare Destroyer and the SEA 5000 Future Frigate programmes for the Royal Australian Navy, six key drivers identified by the Defence White Paper 2016 that shapes the security environment of Australia, and the increase in number of platforms operated by the People's Liberation Army Navy.
