Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial in many aspect of ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of SWH has therefore been of immense practical value. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) time series prediction methods have been widely used for single-point short-term SWH time-series forecasting, resulting in many AI-based models claiming to achieve good results. However, the extent to which these complex AI models can outperform traditional methods has largely been overlooked. This study compared five different models - AutoRegressive (AR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and WaveNet - for their performance on SWH time series prediction at 16 buoy locations. Surprisingly, the results suggest that the differences of performance among different models are negligible, indicating that all these AI models have only "learned" the linear auto-regression from the data. Digital technologies sustain today's world. Every part of the world is working towards digital technologies, which none of us can eliminate. Enormous growth is achieved only by unexpected acceleration by digital technologies, including the Internet of Everything (IoE), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Deep Learning (DL), and many more. Artificial intelligence (AI) and its data-driven counterpart, machine learning (ML), are rapidly evolving disciplines with increasing applications in modeling, simulation, control, and optimization within the drying industry. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of progress made in ML from shallow to deep learning and its implications for food drying. Theoretical foundations, advantages, and limitations of various ML approaches employed in this domain are explored. Additionally, advancements in ML models, particularly those enhanced by optimization algorithms, are reviewed. The review underscores the role of intelligent configuration of ML models, which affects their accuracy and ability to solve problems of high energy consumption, nutrient degradation, and uneven drying. Artificial Intelligence is quickly emerging as a technological solution for the agriculture industry to surmount its classical challenges. Artificial Intelligence is facilitating farmers to refine their products and alleviate unfavourable impacts due to the environment. The central concern of this paper is predictive analytics to develop a machine learning model to identify and predict crop yield based on multiple environmental factors. In this paper, a hybrid learner 'RaNN' is proposed that combines the feature sampling and majority voting technique of Random Forest in-combination with the multilayer Feedforward Neural Network to predict the crop yield. Research has also ascertained the essential features responsible for accurate yield prediction. The proposed model works for rice yield prediction, one of the chief grains of India. The region chosen for the work is Punjab, which is among the largest producer states of India for rice. The dataset consists of 15 attributes comprising the weather and agriculture data collected from the Indian Meteorological Department Pune, and Punjab Environment Information System (ENVIS) Center, Government of India. The study has also made a comparative assessment of 'RaNN' with machine learning methods like Multiple Linear Regression, Random Forest, Decision Tree, Boosting Regression, Support Vector Machine Regression, Ensemble Learner, and Artificial Neural Network. Our model RaNN has listed a better prediction accuracy with minimal error among the other techniques providing a 98% correlation between the actual and the predicted yield. The digitization of distribution power systems has revolutionized the way data are collected and analyzed. In this paper, the critical task of harnessing this information to identify irregularities and anomalies in electricity consumption is tackled. The focus is on detecting non-technical losses (NTLs) and energy theft within distribution networks. A comprehensive overview of the methodologies employed to uncover NTLs and energy theft is presented, leveraging measurements of electricity consumption. The most common scenarios and prevalent cases of anomalies and theft among consumers are identified. Additionally, statistical indicators tailored to specific anomalies are proposed. In this research paper, the practical implementation of numerous artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, including the artificial neural network (ANN), ANFIS, autoencoder neural network, and K-mean clustering, is highlighted. These algorithms play a central role in our research, and our primary objective is to showcase their effectiveness in identifying NTLs. Real-world data sourced directly from distribution networks are utilized. Additionally, we carefully assess how well statistical methods work and compare them to AI techniques by testing them with real data. The artificial neural network (ANN) accurately identifies various consumer types, exhibiting a frequency error of 7.62%. In contrast, the K-means algorithm shows a slightly higher frequency error of 9.26%, while the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) fails to detect the initial anomaly type, resulting in a frequency error of 11.11%. Our research suggests that AI can make finding irregularities in electricity consumption even more effective. Despite the complex punching shear behavior of reinforced concrete slabs have been comprehensively addressed in the literature, it is further essential to develop a universal design model comprising high accuracy and the simplicity for design practicability, adaptable to diverse conditions encountered in practice. Artificial intelligence applications, artificial neural networks (ANN), and more recently, various machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques veer off in a new direction in structural engineering context with improved accuracy and efficiency. The paper begins with the assessment of the capabilities of various artificial intelligence applications in predicting the punching shear strength of slab-column connections without shear reinforcement through the extensive database using 650 punching shear experiments from the literature. Critical parameters influencing the punching shear strength as well as the precision of the current code provisions in predicting this feature were then thoroughly examined in the paper. The results shown in this paper validated the competency of artificial intelligence applications in predicting the punching shear strength of such connections with increased accuracy and improved simplicity in practical terms. Background and objectives: This review aims to delve into the role of artificial intelligence in medicine. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by superficial mucosal inflammation, rectal bleeding, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. By identifying the challenges inherent in UC diagnosis, we seek to highlight the potential impact of artificial intelligence on enhancing both diagnosis and treatment methodologies for this condition. Method: A targeted, non-systematic review of literature relating to ulcerative colitis was undertaken. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched to categorize a well-rounded understanding of the field of artificial intelligence and its developing role in the diagnosis and treatment of ulcerative colitis. Articles that were thought to be relevant were included. This paper only included articles published in English. Results: Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer algorithms capable of learning, problem solving and decision-making. Throughout our review, we highlighted the role and importance of artificial intelligence in modern medicine, emphasizing its role in diagnosis through AI-assisted endoscopies and histology analysis and its enhancements in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Despite these advances, AI is still hindered due to its current lack of adaptability to real-world scenarios and its difficulty in widespread data availability, which hinders the growth of AI-led data analysis. Conclusions: When considering the potential of artificial intelligence, its ability to enhance patient care from a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective shows signs of promise. For the true utilization of artificial intelligence, some roadblocks must be addressed. The datasets available to AI may not truly reflect the real-world, which would prevent its impact in all clinical scenarios when dealing with a spectrum of patients with different backgrounds and presenting factors. This paper aims to build a machine learning and a neural network model to detect the probability of money laundering in banks. The paper's data came from a simulation of actual transactions flagged for money laundering in Middle Eastern banks. The main findings highlight that criminal networks mainly use the integration stage to integrate money into the financial system. Fraudsters prefer to launder funds in the early hours, morning followed by the business day's afternoon time intervals. Given the peculiarly linguistic approach that contemporary philosophers use to apply St. Thomas Aquinas's arguments on the immateriality of the human soul, this paper will present a Thomistic-inspired evaluation of whether artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) chatbots' composition and linguistic performance justify the assertion that AI/ML chatbots have immaterial souls. The first section of the paper will present a strong, but ultimately crucially flawed argument that AI/ML chatbots do have souls based on contemporary Thomistic argumentation. The second section of the paper will provide an overview of the actual computer science models that make artificial neural networks and AI/ML chatbots function, which I hope will assist other theologians and philosophers writing about technology, The third section will present some of Emily Bender's and Alexander Koller's objections to AI/ML chatbots being able to access meaning from computational linguistics. The final section will highlight the similarities of Bender's and Koller's argument to a fuller presentation of St. Thomas Aquinas's argument for the immateriality of the human soul, ultimately arguing that the current mechanisms and linguistic activity of AI/ML programming do not constitute activity sufficient to conclude that they have immaterial souls on the strength of St. Thomas's arguments. Due to high spatial and temporal resolution, geostationary meteorological satellite imagery is a valuable source of information on the development of deep convective clouds and related severe weather events. Some methods for automatic deep convection detection from satellite data provide a satisfactory probability of detection for independent datasets, but are characterized by a high false alarm rate. The paper gives a description of an algorithm for automatic detection of deep convective clouds with satellite imagery using gradient boosting, logistic regression, and artificial neural network models. The results of validation of the proposed method using dependent and independent data of ground-based observations for the period 2013–2020 are presented. This paper explores the different insider employee-led cyber frauds (IECF) based on the recent large-scale fraud events of prominent Indian banking institutions. Examining the different types of fraud and appropriate control measures will protect the banking industry from fraudsters. In this study, we identify and classify Cyber Fraud (CF), map the severity of the fraud on a scale of priority, test the mitigation effectiveness, and propose optimal mitigation measures. The identification and classification of CF losses were based on a literature review and focus group discussions with risk and vigilance officers and cyber cell experts. The CF was analyzed using secondary data. We predicted and prioritized CF based on machine learning-derived Random Forest (RF). An efficient fraud mitigation model was developed based on an offender-victim-centric approach. Mitigation is advised both before and after fraud occurs. Through the findings of this research, banks and fraud investigators can prevent CF by detecting it quickly and controlling it on time. This study proposes a structured, sustainable CF mitigation plan that protects banks, employees, regulators, customers, and the economy, thus saving time, resources, and money. This present review explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods in analysing the prediction of thermophysical properties of nanofluids. Nanofluids, colloidal solutions comprising nanoparticles dispersed in various base fluids, have received significant attention for their enhanced thermal properties and broad application in industries ranging from electronics cooling to renewable energy systems. In particular, nanofluids' complexity and non-linear behaviour necessitate advanced predictive models in heat transfer applications. The AI techniques, which include genetic algorithms (GAs) and machine learning (ML) methods, have emerged as powerful tools to address these challenges and offer novel alternatives to traditional mathematical and physical models. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and other AI algorithms are highlighted for their capacity to process large datasets and identify intricate patterns, thereby proving effective in predicting nanofluid thermophysical properties (e.g., thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity). This review paper presents a comprehensive overview of various published studies devoted to the thermal behaviour of nanofluids, where AI methods (like ANNs, support vector regression (SVR), and genetic algorithms) are employed to enhance the accuracy of predictions of their thermophysical properties. Despite the existence of evidence-based rehabilitation strategies that address biomechanical deficits, the persistence of recurrent ankle problems in 70% of patients with acute ankle sprains highlights the unresolved nature of this issue. Artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a promising tool to identify definitive predictors for ankle sprains. This paper aims to summarize the use of AI in investigating the ankle biomechanics of healthy and subjects with ankle sprains. Articles published between 2010 and 2023 were searched from five electronic databases. 59 papers were included for analysis with regards to: i). types of motion tested (functional vs. purposeful ankle movement); ii) types of biomechanical parameters measured (kinetic vs kinematic); iii) types of sensor systems used (lab-based vs field-based); and, iv) AI techniques used. Most studies (83.1%) examined biomechanics during functional motion. Single kinematic parameter, specifically ankle range of motion, could obtain accuracy up to 100% in identifying injury status. Wearable sensor exhibited high reliability for use in both laboratory and on-field/clinical settings. AI algorithms primarily utilized electromyography and joint angle information as input data. Support vector machine was the most used supervised learning algorithm (18.64%), while artificial neural network demonstrated the highest accuracy in eight studies. The potential for remote patient monitoring is evident with the adoption of field-based devices. Nevertheless, AI-based sensors are underutilized in detecting ankle motions at risk of sprain. We identify three key challenges: sensor designs, the controllability of AI models, and the integration of AI-sensor models, providing valuable insights for future research. Flood modelling and forecasting can enhance our understanding of flood mechanisms and facilitate effective management of flood risk. Conventional flood hazard and risk assessments usually consider one driver at a time, whether it is ocean, fluvial or pluvial, without considering the compound nature of flood events. In this paper, we developed a novel approach for modelling and forecasting compound coastal-fluvial floods using a two-step framework. In step one, a hydrodynamic model is used to simulate floodwater propagation; while in step two, machine learning (ML) models are used to generate flood forecasts. The architecture of hydrodynamic-ML forecasting system incorporates a hydrodynamic model covering a specific domain, with individual ML models trained for each pixel. In total 7 ML models including: Support Vector Regression (SVR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Radial Basis Function (RBF), Linear Regression (LR), Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), Decision Tree (DT), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were applied in this study. Forecasting compound floods is achieved using two sets of inputs: timeseries of river discharges in the upstream fluvial section and downstream ocean water levels in the coastal areas. The accuracy of the flood forecasting system is demonstrated for Cork City, Ireland; and modelling performance was evaluated using several statistical tools. Results show that the proposed models can provide reliable estimates of flood inundation and associated water depths. Overall, the RBF model exhibits the best performance. Despite the complexity of compound multi-driver floods, this study shows that the coupled hydrodynamic-ML approach can forecast coastal-fluvial flood with limited hydraulic and hydrological input data. This system overcomes the limitations of traditional hydrodynamic model-based systems where trade-offs between the always competing numerical model accuracy and computational time prohibit the model to be used for short-term flood forecasting. Once trained, the ML component of the coupled system can perform flood forecasting in near real-time, potentially integrating into a flood early warning system. The conventional standardized theoretical models (such as Webster, Alcelik, Indo-HCM) used for the delay estimation revolve around the mathematical hypothesis and assumptions, making them static with limitations in accommodating the dynamic traffic behaviors. Recent advances in artificial intelligence make machine learning techniques suitable for estimating vehicle control delay compared to conventional methods. This paper demonstrates the application of several machine learning models developed by focusing on the fluctuations of traffic observed at an intersection having heterogeneous traffic conditions in Ahmedabad city for delay estimation. Several parameters are extracted from on-field and video surveys. However, not all parameters are relevant for accurately estimating vehicle control delay. Hence, a feature selection process consisting of several feature-scoring techniques from filter, wrapper, and embedded methods is applied to all the parameters. This process gave insights into the most statistically relevant independent parameters, and out of all the parameters, cycle time was found to be insignificant, with a feature score of 0 from almost all techniques. Hence, it was removed, and then the prominent parameters were then used to build a vehicle control delay model using support vector regression (SVR), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), artificial neural network (ANN), random forest regression (RF), and decision tree regression (DT). Error distribution, standard deviation of errors, coefficient of Determination (R2), and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) are the parameters used for evaluating the performance of the machine learning models. RF outperformed them all with a standard deviation of errors, R2, and RMSE of 11.065, 0.926, and 11.081 on testing data. But ANN, KNN, and DT also performed satisfactorily. Extensive research has been conducted on analyzing human movements, driven by its diverse practical applications such as human–robot interaction, human learning, and clinical diagnosis. However, the current state-of-the-art still encounters scientific challenges when it comes to modeling human movements. There are two key aspects that need to be addressed. Firstly, new models should consider the stochastic nature of human movement and the physical structure of the human body to accurately predict the patterns in full-body motion descriptors over time. Secondly, while deep learning algorithms have been utilized, they lack explainability in terms of predicting body posture sequences, making it essential to improve their comprehensible representation of human movement. This paper aims to tackle these challenges by presenting three innovative methods for creating explainable representations of human movement. The study formulates human body movement as a state-space model based on the Gesture Operational Model (GOM). Model parameters are estimated through either one-shot training employing Kalman Filters or data-intensive training utilizing artificial neural networks. The trained models are utilized for analyzing the dexterity of expert professionals in full-body movements, enabling the identification of dynamic associations between body joints and gesture recognition. The advent of reliable and inexpensive sensors and advancements in general computing have made data-heavy algorithms feasible for operational, real-time decision-making applications in the geothermal energy industry. This systematic review aims to provide a starting point for researchers interested in developing data-driven systems, tools, and frameworks to enhance the performance and reliability of above-ground geothermal energy operations. The approach and results of the review are presented to answer the following research questions: how has data analytics been applied in above-ground geothermal operations, what data sets have been used in such studies, which types of machine learning or artificial intelligence algorithms have been used in geothermal studies, and at which stages of geothermal development have studies been applied. Published research articles were retrieved from four literature databases: the International Geothermal Association (IGA) online library, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and IEEE Xplore. A total of 830 publications were retrieved using the same search query across the selected databases, from which 63 research papers were selected based on a set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. A full-text evaluation of the selected research papers revealed that machine learning has been used in geothermal for design optimisation, performance monitoring, performance optimisation, fault detection, and other applications. Most of the trained models (95 %) were of the artificial neural network family with other model types generally used as performance benchmarks. The systematic review revealed significant potential for further research and applications in the areas of feature selection, systematic time-series feature engineering, and model evaluation. • A systematic review of AI and data analytics studies in geothermal was conducted. • Most of the reviewed research focused on the development of neural network models. • Design optimisation and condition monitoring are the primary themes in the studies. • Model quality and interpretability can be addressed by applying ML best practices. Recent advancements in data science and artificial intelligence, as well as the development of clean and sustainable energy sources, have created numerous opportunities for energy researchers to conduct their studies. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques have been applied to Renewable Energy Systems (RES) for several years, and their intensity and scope have grown in recent years. Since artificial intelligence and machine learning have a wide range of applications, it may be difficult to select and implement suitable methods for future research. In order to address this issue, this study examines several of the most popular and well-known AI techniques in renewable energy. This paper describes over ten of the most prevalent RES modeling and optimization algorithms, including Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Long and Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Recurrent and Convolutional Neural Networks (RNNs and CNNs), the Genetic Algorithm (GA), and the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO). More than a hundred different studies between 2020 and 2022 have been compiled and organized in the results section according to the method used and the field of application. Online social networks can be used for mental healthcare monitoring using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques for detecting various mental health disorders and corresponding risk assessment. Recent research in this domain has primarily been focused on leveraging deep neural networks and various Transformer based Large Language Models, which have now become state-of-the-art for most natural language processing and computational linguistic tasks due to their unmatched prediction accuracy. Unlike conventional machine learning algorithms, these deep neural networks are black box architectures, where it is difficult to interpret and explain their predicted outcome. However, a black box classification outcome is insufficient for healthcare applications. Such systems will not be widely adopted and trusted by healthcare practitioners if they are not able to understand and explain the reasoning behind the predicted decisions made by an AI and ML based healthcare diagnostic system. The key objective of our research is to demonstrate the applications of model agnostic, post hoc surrogate XAI techniques for providing explainability to classification decisions of pretrained LLMs (Transformers) based mental healthcare diagnostic systems fine-tuned (or trained) to detect depressive and suicidal behavior using UGC from online social networks. For this, we have used the two most recent and popular techniques, SHAP and LIME. We have conducted extensive and in-depth experiments with four datasets and six pretrained LLMs, three of which have already been domain-adapted using mental health related datasets. We have also performed Few Shot Learning experiments with these three pretrained mental health domain-adapted LLMs. The results of qualitative and descriptive data analysis in this paper demonstrate that in order to build a comprehensive understanding of a person's psychological state, emotion, and behavior and to discover the causes, symptoms, and triggers of mental health issues, it is essential to utilize e X pl AI nable (XAI) techniques with Transformer based LLMs (supervised). Alternatively, Transformer based unsupervised topic modeling technique BERTopic may be used for mental health risk monitoring and cause or symptom extraction when supervised training of LLMs is not feasible due to dataset annotation or availability challenges. The efforts to revolutionize electric power generation and produce clean and sustainable electricity have led to the exploration of renewable energy systems (RES). This form of energy is replenished and cost-effective in terms of production and maintenance. However, RES, such as solar and wind energies, is intermittent; this is one of the drawbacks of its usage. In order to overcome this limitation, studies have been undertaken to forecast its availability and power output. The current trending method of forecasting availability and the power generated by the RES is the artificial intelligence (AI) method. However, with all its potential, traditional AI, such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and many more, does not have it all. Because of this, metaheuristic algorithms are being explored as optimization techniques to increase the performance accuracy of these AI forecasting methods and overcome some challenges of traditional AI models. This study presents an insightful survey of AI (traditional AI and metaheuristic) methods explored to forecast the availability of solar and wind renewable energy systems. A survey of the existing surveyed literature was presented. The taxonomy of the explored AI in RES was formulated, and the theoretical backgrounds of some of the traditional AI algorithms were presented. Also, the various forms of metaheuristic algorithms and the improved versions applied to optimize classical AI methods to forecast RES systems' availability and power output were surveyed. A conceptual framework of the hybrid AI application in RES was formulated. Finally, the survey discussion, insight, challenges of the existing models and future directions were presented. Robustness has become an important consideration in deep learning. With the help of explainable AI, mismatches between an explained model's decision strategy and the user's domain knowledge (e.g. Clever Hans effects) have been identified as a starting point for improving faulty models. However, it is less clear what to do when the user and the explanation agree. In this paper, we demonstrate that acceptance of explanations by the user is not a guarantee for a machine learning model to be robust against Clever Hans effects, which may remain undetected. Such hidden flaws of the model can nevertheless be mitigated, and we demonstrate this by contributing a new method, Explanation-Guided Exposure Minimization (EGEM), that preemptively prunes variations in the ML model that have not been the subject of positive explanation feedback. Experiments demonstrate that our approach leads to models that strongly reduce their reliance on hidden Clever Hans strategies, and consequently achieve higher accuracy on new data. • Explainable AI may not detect all Clever Hans effects in practical ML scenarios. • Hidden Clever Hans effects can be mitigated using Exposure Minimization. • We propose a solution in the form of a soft-pruning scheme on network activations. • We demonstrate the practical benefits of our approach on image and text data.
