This paper studies an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless powered IoT network, where a rotary-wing UAV adopts fly-hover-communicate protocol to successively visit IoT devices in demand. During the hovering periods, the UAV works on full-duplex mode to simultaneously collect data from the target device and charge other devices within its coverage. Practical propulsion power consumption model and non-linear energy harvesting model are taken into account. We formulate a multi-objective optimization problem to jointly optimize three objectives: maximization of sum data rate, maximization of total harvested energy and minimization of UAV’s energy consumption over a particular mission period. These three objectives are in conflict with each other partly and weight parameters are given to describe associated importance. Since IoT devices keep gathering information from the physical surrounding environment and their requirements to upload data change dynamically, online path planning of the UAV is required. In this paper, we apply deep reinforcement learning algorithm to achieve online decision. An extended deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is proposed to learn control policies of UAV over multiple objectives. While training, the agent learns to produce optimal policies under given weights conditions on the basis of achieving timely data collection according to the requirement priority and avoiding devices’ data overflow. The verification results show that the proposed MODDPG (multi-objective DDPG) algorithm achieves joint optimization of three objectives and optimal policies can be adjusted according to weight parameters among optimization objectives. This paper presents an overview of the geometric partitioning mode (GPM) algorithm that is a part of the most recent Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard. The GPM algorithm aims to increase the partitioning precision of moving objects using non-rectangular and asymmetric rectangular partitions on top of the conventional rectangular block partitioning structure of VVC. Novel features of GPM contributing to the increase in coding efficiency and the reduction in encoder and decoder complexity are detailed and analyzed in this paper. Evaluated with VVC test model version 8.0 under the joint video experts team common test conditions, experimental results show that the presented GPM algorithm provides luma Bjøntegaard Delta rate reduction of 0.70% for random access and of 1.55% for low delay with B slices configurations, with roughly 3% to 5% additional encoding time and negligible decoder runtime change. This paper proposes a novel inertia-enhanced distributed control method to complement the inertia of microgrids. The rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and the rate of change of voltage (RoCoV) are employed in this paper to quantify the frequency inertia and voltage inertia, respectively. Then, a fully distributed algorithm with constrained changing rates is proposed. By bounding the changing rates of frequency and voltage during the consensus control, the algorithm can address the consensus problem while enhancing the inertia of microgrids. Compared with most inertia control methods, the proposed method can utilize the reserve power of scattered DGs to supply inertia. Besides, it performs better under disturbances and delays than conventional distributed control methods. This paper presents a new method for selecting a patient specific forward model to compensate for anatomical variations in electrical impedance tomography (EIT) monitoring of neonates. The method uses a combination of shape sensors and absolute reconstruction. It takes advantage of a probabilistic approach which automatically selects the best estimated forward model fit from pre-stored library models. Absolute/static image reconstruction is performed as the core of the posterior probability calculations. The validity and reliability of the algorithm in detecting a suitable model in the presence of measurement noise is studied with simulated and measured data from 11 patients. The paper also demonstrates the potential improvements on the clinical parameters extracted from EIT images by considering a unique case study with a neonate patient undergoing computed tomography imaging as clinical indication prior to EIT monitoring. Two well-known image reconstruction techniques, namely GREIT and tSVD, are implemented to create the final tidal images. The impacts of appropriate model selection on the clinical extracted parameters such as center of ventilation and silent spaces are investigated. The results show significant improvements to the final reconstructed images and more importantly to the clinical EIT parameters extracted from the images that are crucial for decision-making and further interventions. This paper presents a nonlinear dynamic simulation model of an ultracapacitor (UC) bank and the associated control system. The control system at hand consists of two levels: the lower level controls the inverter of the UC bank, while the upper control level is responsible for providing charging/discharging active power set points to be followed by the lower control level. This paper focuses on the development of the upper control level for frequency control. Specifically, two simulation case studies are developed so as to assess the performance of the proposed control framework. In the first case study the upper control level is developed using a classical Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller. In the second case study the upper control level is devised using a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm based on internal linear prediction model of a nonlinear UC bank. In both cases, a nonlinear UC bank simulation model is used. The simulation case studies are modelled and tested in Matlab/Simulink. The response of the MPC-controlled UC bank is compared to the 3 existing PID-control algorithms for frequency control. Conventional model predictive control (MPC) for three-level active neutral point clamped converter (ANPC) utilizes weighting factors to achieve the optimal control of multiple control objectives in a single cost function. However, the selection of these weighting factors has an impact on the performance of the controlled objectives significantly. Tuning of weighting factors is usually tedious and lacks theoretical background. Moreover, the predictive and evaluation process for multiple objectives optimization have to be carried out by enumerating all admissible switching states within one loop. To simplify the complexity of this process and eliminate the effect of weighting factors, this paper proposes a cascaded predictive control scheme for a 3L-ANPC inverter fed induction machine (IM) drive. With the proposed approach, three separate cost functions for three control objectives, stator flux vector, neutral point voltage and device loss distribution are evaluated in a cascaded way, so that the optimization of these control objectives is performed independently. A 3L-ANPC inverter driven IM drive is studied in this paper to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results in different operating conditions confirm that the proposed method achieves satisfactory steady-state and transient performances comparable to the conventional predictive control approach. The weighting factors used in the conventional method are eliminated and the computational effort is reduced by 68% compared to the conventional method without any sacrifice in the drive performance. Deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) can predict motor behavior based on SPMSM model. However, during the operation of motor system, motor parameters (such as stator inductance and flux linkage) vary frequently according to different working conditions, which may lead to controller parameter mismatch, causing current harmonic content to increase and efficiency to decrease. In order to solve these problems caused by parameter variation, first, this paper proposes a current prediction error model by considering uncertainties of model parameters. Second, stator inductance and flux linkage are decoupled based on current prediction error model, which can reduce the interaction between parameters. Finally, the Kalman Filter (KF) algorithm is presented to filter the decoupled parameters. It is shown that the stator inductance and flux linkage can be identified accurately and the complexity of computation can be simplified. The traditional DPCC method, Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based DPCC method and the proposed DPCC method are comparatively analyzed in this paper. Simulation and experiment indicate that the proposed parameter decoupling identification method can effectively reduce current harmonic content, current fluctuation and current tracking errors caused by parameter mismatch. This paper presents a simple pulse width modulation algorithm for control of an ultracapacitor based energy storage system used for source and load support applications. As opposed to dual loop control philosophy that is widely used for backup applications, this paper presents a simple single loop current control that is only useful for controlling the ultracapacitor based DC/DC converters used in source and load support applications. The proposed PWM blocking method necessitates the DC/DC converter to operate in five states and takes into consideration the essential operational limits associated with the ultracapacitors. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified experimentally using a 24 V laboratory prototype setup. This paper presents an overview of the decoder-side motion vector refinement (DMVR) algorithm in the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard. The proposed DMVR algorithm aims to increase the prediction accuracy of the blocks coded in merge mode using the bilateral matching-based refinement method. Compared with previous decoder-side motion vector derivation approaches, the proposed method significantly increases the coding efficiency without signaling additional side information. Furthermore, the hardware implementation considerations of the DMVR design are particularly focused in this study. This paper details and analyzes the novel features of DMVR contributing to the increase in coding efficiency and the reduction in computational complexity and implementation difficulty. Experimental results based on the VVC test model version 8.0 demonstrate that average Bjøntegaard Delta rate savings of 0.80 % and 2.81 % are achieved for the “tool-off” and “tool-on” test configurations, respectively. This paper addresses the problem of instrument current transformers technical state assessment based on machine learning methods. The introductory parts of the paper provide a detailed analysis of modern methods and approaches for technical state assessment of high-voltage power equipment of power plants and substations as well as a review of modern software tools and the latest trends in the given field of study. Justification of the relevance of the presented research aimed at instrument current transformers technical state assessment is provided along with the motivation for machine learning methods application for improvement of the accuracy and quality of high-voltage equipment state classification. Within the framework of the study, a comparative analysis of gradient boosting on decision trees and random forest algorithms was carried out for a given mathematical problem formulation. The main stages of processing the initial dataset are proposed as a step-by-step procedure, including feature extraction, feature transformation, feature interactions, etc. The outperforming efficiency of gradient boosting on decision trees algorithm was validated for real power equipment fleet. This paper proposes on-driving experience sharing algorithms at junctions in infrastructure-assisted vehicles-to-everything networks. For the purpose, a millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology is used because it provides multi-Gbps data rates which is helpful for handling users’ short stay times at junctions and spatial reuse due to high beam directionality which is helpful for interference-avoidance among densely deployed vehicles at junctions. To realize on-driving experience sharing, the proposed algorithms focus on joint resource allocation and scheduling for 3GPP-compliant multiple unicast vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications where the vehicles are group leaders (GLs) in 3GPP Mode 4(d). The resource allocation stands for the roadside unit (RSU) allocation to scheduled V2V GL links where RSU is essentially required for overcoming blockage by establishing two-hop relaying. Because vehicles stay for short times at junctions, this paper designs two algorithms without or with delay considerations. Without delay considerations, the joint optimization of RSU allocation and scheduling was originally formulated as mixed 0-1 non-convex optimization. However our proposed algorithm reformulates the problem into mixed 0-1 convex optimization, which is computationally easier to solve. With delay considerations, our proposed algorithm dynamically controls video contents frame rates for time-average on-driving video sharing quality maximization subject to delay constraints, inspired by Lyapunov optimization. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our algorithms can significantly outperform in a variety of scenarios. The combination of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an efficient solution to significantly enhance the energy efficiency of the wireless communication system. In this paper, a downlink multi-cluster NOMA network is considered, where each cluster is supported by one IRS. This paper aims to minimize the transmit power by jointly optimizing the beamforming, the power allocation and the phase shift of each IRS. The formulated problem is non-convex and challenging to be solved due to the coupled variables, i.e., the beamforming vector, the power allocation coefficient and the phase shift matrix. To address this non-convex problem, an alternating optimization based algorithm is proposed. Specifically, the primal problem is divided into two subproblems for beamforming optimization and phase shifting feasiblity, where the two subproblems are solved iteratively. Moreover, to guarantee the feasibility of the beamforming optimization problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed to search the feasible initial points. To reduce the complexity, a simplified algorithm based on partial exhaustive search for this system model is also proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed alternating algorithm can yield a better performance gain than the partial exhaustive search algorithm, NOMA with random IRS phase shift scheme and OMA-IRS scheme. In this paper, we consider a general K-user Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC). We assume that the channel state is deterministic and known to all the nodes. While the private-message capacity region is well known to be achievable with dirty paper coding (DPC), we are interested in the simpler linearly precoded transmission schemes. In particular, we focus on linear precoding schemes combined with rate-splitting (RS). First, we derive an achievable rate region with minimum mean square error (MMSE) precoding at the transmitter and joint decoding of the sub-messages at the receivers. Then, we study the achievable sum rate of this scheme and obtain two findings: 1) an analytically tractable upper bound on the sum rate that is shown numerically to be a close approximation, and 2) how to reduce the number of active streams – crucial to the overall complexity – while preserving the sum rate to within a constant loss. The latter results in two practical algorithms: a stream elimination algorithm and a stream ordering algorithm. Finally, we investigate the constant-gap optimality of linearly precoded RS with respect to the capacity. Our result reveals that, while the achievable rate of linear precoding alone can be arbitrarily far from the capacity, the introduction of RS can help achieve the capacity region to within a constant gap in the two-user case. Nevertheless, we prove that the RS scheme’s constant-gap optimality does not extend to the three-user case. In this paper, we present a low-complexity recursive approach for massive and scalable code-domain nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with applications to emerging low-capacity scenarios. The problem definition in this paper is inspired by three major requirements of the next generations of wireless networks. Firstly, the proposed scheme is particularly beneficial in low-capacity regimes which is important in practical scenarios of utmost interest such as the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and massive machine-type communication (mMTC). Secondly, we employ code-domain NOMA to efficiently share the scarce common resources among the users. Finally, the proposed recursive approach enables code-domain NOMA with low-complexity detection algorithms that are scalable with the number of users to satisfy the requirements of massive connectivity. To this end, we propose a novel encoding and decoding scheme for code-domain NOMA based on factorizing the pattern matrix, for assigning the available resource elements to the users, as the Kronecker product of several smaller factor matrices. As a result, both the pattern matrix design at the transmitter side and the mixed symbols’ detection at the receiver side can be performed over matrices with dimensions that are much smaller than the overall pattern matrix. Consequently, this leads to significant reduction in both the complexity and the latency of the detection. We present the detection algorithm for the general case of factor matrices. The proposed algorithm involves several recursions each involving certain sets of equations corresponding to a certain factor matrix. We then characterize the system performance in terms of average sum rate, latency, and detection complexity. Our latency and complexity analysis confirm the superiority of our proposed scheme in enabling large pattern matrices. Moreover, our numerical results for the average sum rate show that the proposed scheme provides better performance compared to straightforward code-domain NOMA with comparable complexity, especially at low-capacity regimes. Reed-Muller (RM) codes are among the oldest, simplest and perhaps most ubiquitous family of codes. They are used in many areas of coding theory in both electrical engineering and computer science. Yet, many of their important properties are still under investigation. This paper covers some of the recent developments regarding the weight enumerator and the capacity-achieving properties of RM codes, as well as some of the algorithmic developments. In particular, the paper discusses the recent connections established between RM codes, thresholds of Boolean functions, polarization theory, hypercontractivity, and the techniques of approximating low weight codewords using lower degree polynomials (when codewords are viewed as evaluation vectors of degree r polynomials in m variables). It then overviews some of the algorithms for decoding RM codes. It covers both algorithms with provable performance guarantees for every block length, as well as algorithms with state-of-the-art performances in practical regimes, which do not perform as well for large block length. Unlike the conventional facial expressions, micro-expressions are involuntary and transient facial expressions capable of revealing the genuine emotions that people attempt to hide. Therefore, they can provide important information in a broad range of applications such as lie detection, criminal detection, etc. Since micro-expressions are transient and of low intensity, however, their detection and recognition is difficult and relies heavily on expert experiences. Due to its intrinsic particularity and complexity, video-based micro-expression analysis is attractive but challenging, and has recently become an active area of research. Although there have been numerous developments in this area, thus far there has been no comprehensive survey that provides researchers with a systematic overview of these developments with a unified evaluation. Accordingly, in this survey paper, we first highlight the key differences between macro- and micro-expressions, then use these differences to guide our research survey of video-based micro-expression analysis in a cascaded structure, encompassing the neuropsychological basis, datasets, features, spotting algorithms, recognition algorithms, applications and evaluation of state-of-the-art approaches. For each aspect, the basic techniques, advanced developments and major challenges are addressed and discussed. Furthermore, after considering the limitations of existing micro-expression datasets, we present and release a new dataset — called micro-and-macro expression warehouse (MMEW) — containing more video samples and more labeled emotion types. We then perform a unified comparison of representative methods on CAS(ME) $^2$ 2 for spotting, and on MMEW and SAMM for recognition, respectively. Energy management strategy (EMS) is the key to the performance of fuel cell / battery hybrid system. At present, reinforcement learning (RL) has been introduced into this field and has gradually become the focus of research. However, traditional EMSs only take the energy consumption into consideration when optimizing the operation economy, and ignore the cost caused by power source degradations. It would cause the problem of poor operation economy regarding Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). On the other hand, most studied RL algorithms have the disadvantages of overestimation and improper way of restricting battery SOC, which would lead to relatively poor control performance as well. To solve these problems, this paper establishes a TCO model including energy consumption, equivalent energy consumption and degradation of power sources at first, then adopt the Double Q-learning RL algorithm with state constraint and variable action space to determine the optimal EMS. Finally, using hardware-in-the-loop platform, the feasibility, superiority and generalization of proposed EMS is proved by comparing with the optimal dynamic programming and traditional RL EMS and equivalent consumption minimum strategy (ECMS) under both training and unknown operating conditions. As a specific data hiding technique, reversible data hiding (RDH) has recently received extensive attention. By this technique, both the embedded data and the original cover image can be exactly extracted from the marked image. In our previous work, a general expansion-shifting model for RDH is proposed by introducing the so-called reversible embedding function (REF). With REF, RDH can be designed and the corresponding rate-distortion formulations can be established, providing an approach to optimize the reversible embedding performance. In this paper, by extending our previous work, optimal REF for one-dimensional histogram is investigated, and all optimal REF are derived in this case when the maximum modification to the cover pixel is limited as a small value. Moreover, based on the derived optimal REF for one-dimensional histogram and multiple histograms modification, a practical RDH scheme is presented and it is experimental verified better than some state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of capacity-distortion performance. Finding top- $k$ k frequent items has been a hot issue in databases. Finding top- $k$ k persistent items is a new issue, and has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In practice, users often want to know which items are significant, i.e., not only frequent but also persistent. No prior art can address both of the above two issues at the same time. Also, for high-speed data streams, prior art cannot achieve high accuracy when the memory is tight. In this paper, we define a new issue, named finding significant items, and propose a novel algorithm namely LTC to address this issue. It includes two key techniques, Long-tail Restoring and CLOCK, as well as three optimizations. In addition, LTC is extended to support finding significant items with thresholds. We theoretically derive the correct rate and error bound, and conduct extensive experiments on three real datasets to test the performance of LTC. Our experimental results show that LTC can achieve $10^5$ 10 5 times higher accuracy in terms of average relative error than other related algorithms. Grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme is considered as a promising candidate for the enabling of massive connectivity and reduced signalling overhead for Internet of Things (IoT) applications in massive machine-type communication (mMTC) networks. Exploiting the inherent nature of sporadic transmissions in the grant-free NOMA systems, compressed sensing based multiuser detection (CS-MUD) has been deemed as a powerful solution to user activity detection (UAD) and data detection (DD). In this paper, block coordinate descend (BCD) method is employed in CS-MUD to reduce the computational complexity. We propose two modified BCD based algorithms, called enhanced BCD (EBCD) and complexity reduction enhanced BCD (CR-EBCD), respectively. To be specific, by incorporating a novel candidate set pruning mechanism into the original BCD framework, our proposed EBCD algorithm achieves remarkable CS-MUD performance improvement. In addition, the proposed CR-EBCD algorithm further ameliorates the proposed EBCD by eliminating the redundant matrix multiplications during the iteration process. As a consequence, compared with the proposed EBCD algorithm, our proposed CR-EBCD algorithm enjoys two orders of magnitude complexity saving without any CS-MUD performance degradation, rendering it a viable solution for future mMTC scenarios. Periodicity is a frequently happening phenomenon for social interactions in temporal networks. Mining periodic communities are essential to understanding periodic group behaviors in temporal networks. Unfortunately, most previous studies for community mining in temporal networks ignore the periodic patterns of communities. In this paper, we study the problem of seeking periodic communities in a temporal network, where each edge is associated with a set of timestamps. We propose novel models, including $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core and $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -clique, that represent periodic communities in temporal networks. Specifically, a $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core (or $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -clique) is a $k$ k -core (or clique with size larger than $k$ k ) that appears at least $\sigma$ σ times periodically in the temporal graph. The problem of searching periodic core is efficient but the resulting communities may be not enough cohesive; the problem of enumerating all periodic cliques is not efficient (NP-hard) but the resulting communities are very cohesive. To compute all of them efficiently, we first develop two effective graph reduction techniques to significantly prune the temporal graph. Then, we transform the temporal graph into a static graph and prove that mining the periodic communities in the temporal graph equals mining communities in the transformed graph. Subsequently, we propose a decomposition algorithm to search maximal $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core, a Bron-Kerbosch style algorithm to enumerate all maximal $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -cliques, and a branch-and-bound style algorithm to find the maximum $\sigma$ σ -periodic clique. This paper revisits the analysis of the well-known infeed effect on transmission lines distance protection. A new adaptive algorithm to overcome this drawback is proposed, which requires solely impedance data and the operational status of power apparatus to perform overreaching distance zones settings. A comparison of the proposed strategy and the traditional one is performed. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed settings ensure the correct operation of overreaching zones. Thereby, the backup coverage is improved significantly, besides avoiding distance zones overlapping between adjacent lines. Mal-operation of distance protection relays during power swing (PS) condition can endanger the power system stability. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish between short-circuit faults and PS by a power swing blocking (PSB) function to prevent undesired tripping of distance relay. This paper develops a novel and straightforward PSB method based on the rate of impedance angle change (RIAC). Not only can the proposed approach fairly discriminate both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults from PS, but also it can appropriately preserve protection scheme security during PS under single-pole tripping (SPT) on a transmission line. Furthermore, there is no need to perform extensive dynamic stability studies for setting the PSB function parameters. Unlike the rate of impedance change approaches utilized two blinders, the developed approach only needs an inner blinder. Thus, it can be used for networks running near their operational limits. The proposed method is evaluated through a modified IEEE-PSRC benchmark system in PSCAD/EMTC environment. With the increasing number of controllable devices in the grid, devices owned by different entities are supposed to cooperatively support the grid operation. To balance the various interests of the customers and the utility, this paper proposes a two-level scheduling algorithm to address voltage regulation by coordinating the customer-owned battery energy storage system (BESS) and utility-owned load tap changers (LTCs) in power distribution systems. The objective is to find the optimal operation scheduling for both BESSs and LTCs that simultaneously maximize the economic payback and satisfy system operation rules. For BESSs, a local optimization problem is formulated in a chance-constrained manner in major consideration of the economic performance. For the utility interest, a Markov decision process (MDP) and a computationally efficient reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm are utilized to solve the optimal tap setting problem. To coordinate BESSs and LTCs, a global voltage adjustment is applied. Vehicle and airborne navigation users are facing more and more complex signal interference and even spoofing. If vehicles and aircraft do not strengthen their anti-spoofing ability, their navigation performance is bound to be adversely affected. global navigation satellite system (GNSS) spoofing technology has gradually become a preferred interference method for spoofer because of its high concealment and great harm. For spoofer, user terminal increasingly adopts GNSS with inertial measurement unit (IMU): tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU, on this basis, user also configures a variety of anti-spoofing techniques to effectively deal with spoofing. Even if spoofer slowly changes user's positioning, if spoofing strategy is unreasonable, it will lead to the violation of parameter rationality of coupled filter output parameters and spoofing observation, which greatly increases the difficulty of spoofing. In view of the above problems, from the perspective of spoofer, in order to effectively counter the non cooperative target of assembling tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU by using GNSS spoofing, this paper establishes GNSS spoofing mathematical model, and proposes a slowly varying spoofing algorithm to avoid tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU with multiple anti-spoofing techniques based on the analysis of the influence mechanism of spoofing on the positioning of tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU, the algorithm proposes a measurement deviation determination method to avoid a variety of anti-spoofing techniques, which can gradually pull the positioning results of coupled system, and successfully avoid anti-spoofing techniques detection of least squares residual receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) and parameter rationality check. The experimental results show that the algorithm can gradually change positioning of tightly-coupled GNSS/IMU within 30 s, and the north, east and down displacements basically achieve the spoofing effect, the errors with the expected offset are −0.5 m, 1.9 m and 12.7 m respectively. At the same time, the detection of the above anti-spoofing techniques is avoided. The mean value of test statistics for tightly-coupled system is reduced by 75.4% and does not exceed the alarm threshold, so as to achieve the purpose of spoofing, the effectiveness and high concealment of the spoofing algorithm are proved. In this paper, we leverage reinforcement learning (RL) and cross-layer network coding (CLNC) for efficiently pre-fetching requested contents to the local caches and delivering these contents to requesting users in a downlink fog-radio access network (F-RAN) with device-to-device (D2D) communications. In the considered system, fog access points (F-APs) and cache-enabled D2D (CE-D2D) users are equipped with local caches that alleviate traffic burden at the fronthaul and facilitate rapid delivery of the users’ contents. To this end, the CLNC scheme optimizes the coding decisions, transmission rates, and power levels of both F-APs and CE-D2D users, and RL scheme optimizes caching strategy. A joint content placement and delivery problem is formulated as an optimization problem with a goal to maximize system sum-rate. The problem is an NP-hard problem. To efficiently solve it, we first develop an innovative decentralized CLNC coalition formation (CLNC-CF) switch algorithm to obtain a stable solution for the content delivery problem, where F-APs and CE-D2D users utilize CLNC resource allocation. By considering statistics of channel and users’ content request into account, we then develop a multi-agent RL algorithm for optimizing the content placement at both F-APs and CE-D2D users. Simulation results show that the proposed joint CLNC-CF-RL framework can effectively improve the sum-rate by up to 30%, 60%, and 150%, respectively, compared to: 1) an optimal uncoded algorithm, 2) a standard rate-aware-NC algorithm, and 3) a benchmark classical NC with network-layer optimization. Degeneracy is an important concept to measure the sparsity of a graph which has been widely used in many network analysis applications. Many network analysis algorithms, such as clique enumeration and truss decomposition, perform very well in graphs having small degeneracies. In this paper, we propose an I/O-efficient algorithm to compute the degeneracy of the massive graph that cannot be fully kept in the main memory. The proposed algorithm only uses $O(n)$ O (n) memory, where $n$ n denotes the number of nodes of the graph. We also develop an I/O-efficient algorithm to incrementally maintain the degeneracy on dynamic graphs. Extensive experiments show that our algorithms significantly outperform the state-of-the-art degeneracy computation algorithms in terms of both running time and I/O costs. The results also demonstrate high scalability of the proposed algorithms. For example, in a real-world web graph with 930 million nodes and 13.3 billion edges, the proposed algorithm takes only 633 seconds and uses less than 4.5GB memory to compute the degeneracy. The probability Jaccard similarity was recently proposed as a natural generalization of the Jaccard similarity to measure the proximity of sets whose elements are associated with relative frequencies or probabilities. In combination with a hash algorithm that maps those weighted sets to compact signatures which allow fast estimation of pairwise similarities, it constitutes a valuable method for big data applications such as near-duplicate detection, nearest neighbor search, or clustering. This paper introduces a class of one-pass locality-sensitive hash algorithms that are orders of magnitude faster than the original approach. The performance gain is achieved by calculating signature components not independently, but collectively. Four different algorithms are proposed based on this idea. Two of them are statistically equivalent to the original approach and can be used as drop-in replacements. The other two may even improve the estimation error by introducing statistical dependence between signature components. Moreover, the presented techniques can be specialized for the conventional Jaccard similarity, resulting in highly efficient algorithms that outperform traditional minwise hashing and that are able to compete with the state of the art. Multimodal path queries over transportation networks are receiving increasing attention due to their widespread applications. A multimodal path query consists of finding multimodal journeys from source to destination in transportation networks, including unrestricted walking, driving, cycling, and schedule-based public transportation. Transportation networks are generally continent-sized. This characteristic highlights the need for parallel computing to accelerate multimodal path queries. Meanwhile, transportation networks are often fragmented and distributively stored on different machines. This situation calls for exploiting parallel computing power for these distributed systems. Therefore, in this paper, we study distributed multimodal path (DMP) queries over large transportation networks. We develop algorithms to explore parallel computation. When evaluating a DMP query $Q$ Q on a distributed multimodal graph $Gmult$ G m u l t , we show that the algorithms possess the following performance guarantees, irrespective of how $Gmult$ G m u l t is fragmented and distributed: (1) each machine is visited only once; (2) the total network traffic is determined by the size of $Q$ Q and the fragmentation of $Gmult$ G m u l t ; (3) the response time is decided by the largest fragment of $Gmult$ G m u l t ; and (4) the algorithm is parallel scalable. For vehicle-to-network communications, handover (HO) management enables vehicles to maintain the connection with the network while transiting through coverage areas of different base stations (BSs). However, the high mobility of vehicles means shorter connection periods with each BS that leads to frequent HOs, hence raises the necessity for optimal HO decision making for high quality infotainment services. Machine learning is capable of capturing underlying pattern via data driven methods to find optimal solutions to complex problems, and much learning-based HO optimization research has been conducted focusing on specific network setups. However, attention still needs to be paid to the actual deployment aspect and standardized datasets or simulation environments for evaluation. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning-based HO algorithm using the input parameters that are configurable in the existing measurement report of cellular networks. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using the well-known network simulator ns-3 with its official LTE module. A realistic network setup in the city center of Glasgow (U.K.) is configured with vehicle trajectories generated by the routes mobility model using Google Maps Directions API. Evaluation results reveal that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the A3 RSRP baseline with an average of 25.72% packet loss reduction per HO, suggesting significant improvement in quality of service of phone call and video streaming, etc. The proposed algorithm also has a small implementation cost compared to some state-of-the-art and should be deployed by a software update to a local BS controller. Compressive covariance estimation has arisen as a class of techniques whose aim is to obtain second-order statistics of stochastic processes from compressive measurements. Recently, these methods have been used in various image processing and communications applications, including denoising, spectrum sensing, and compression. Notice that estimating the covariance matrix from compressive samples leads to ill-posed minimizations with severe performance loss at high compression rates. In this regard, a regularization term is typically aggregated to the cost function to consider prior information about a particular property of the covariance matrix. Hence, this paper proposes an algorithm based on the projected gradient method to recover low-rank or Toeplitz approximations of the covariance matrix from compressive measurements. The proposed algorithm divides the compressive measurements into data subsets projected onto different subspaces and accurately estimates the covariance matrix by solving a single optimization problem assuming that each data subset contains an approximation of the signal statistics. Furthermore, gradient filtering is included at every iteration of the proposed algorithm to minimize the estimation error. The error induced by the proposed splitting approach is analytically derived along with the convergence guarantees of the proposed method. The proposed algorithm estimates the covariance matrix of hyperspectral images from synthetic and real compressive samples. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithm can effectively recover the covariance matrix of hyperspectral images from compressive measurements with high compression ratios ($8-15\%$ approx) in noisy scenarios. Moreover, simulations and theoretical results show that the filtering step reduces the recovery error up to twice the number of eigenvectors. Numerous single image super-resolution (SISR) algorithms have been proposed during the past years to reconstruct a high-resolution (HR) image from its low-resolution (LR) observation. However, how to fairly compare the performance of different SISR algorithms/results remains a challenging problem. So far, the lack of comprehensive human subjective study on large-scale real-world SISR datasets and accurate objective SISR quality assessment metrics makes it unreliable to truly understand the performance of different SISR algorithms. We in this paper make efforts to tackle these two issues. Firstly, we construct a real-world SISR quality dataset (i.e., RealSRQ) and conduct human subjective studies to compare the performance of the representative SISR algorithms. Secondly, we propose a new objective metric, i.e., KLTSRQA, based on the Karhunen-Loéve Transform (KLT) to evaluate the quality of SISR images in a no-reference (NR) manner. Experiments on our constructed RealSRQ and the latest synthetic SISR quality dataset (i.e., QADS) have demonstrated the superiority of our proposed KLTSRQA metric, achieving higher consistency with human subjective scores than relevant existing NR image quality assessment (NR-IQA) metrics. Non-uniform constellation (NUC) is an advanced technology in digital terrestrial television broadcasting (DTTB) systems to reduce the shapping gap of BICM capacity to Shannon theoretical limit and provide performance gain. Two-dimensional NUC (2D-NUC) is a kind of NUC providing more gain but bringing higher demapping complexity at the receiver, which hinders its application prospects, especially in power limited systems. This paper proposes three novel demapping algorithms with reduced complexity for low to medium code rate 2D-NUCs in Advanced Television Systems Committee 3rd Generation (ATSC 3.0) standard. The proposed algorithms are based on the introduction of virtual points, the strategy of condensed symbols reduction and some reasonable approximations. There is a trade-off between the demapping complexity and performance. These three algorithms have different degrees of reduction in complexity and performance degradation, so they accommodate for different practical requirements. Phase retrieval refers to the problem of recovering a signal $ {x}_{\star }\in \mathbb {C}^{n}$ from its phaseless measurements $\text {y}_{\text {i}}=| {a}_{i}^{ \mathsf {H}} {x}_{\star }|$ , where $\{ {a}_{\text {i}}\}_{\text {i}=1}^{ {m}}$ are the measurement vectors. Spectral method is widely used for initialization in many phase retrieval algorithms. The quality of spectral initialization can have a major impact on the overall algorithm. In this paper, we focus on the model where $ {A}=[ {a}_{1},\ldots, {a}_{ {m}}]^{ \mathsf {H}}$ has orthonormal columns, and study the spectral initialization under the asymptotic setting $ {m}, {n}\to \infty $ with $ {m}/ {n}\to \delta \in (1,\infty)$. We use the expectation propagation framework to characterize the performance of spectral initialization for Haar distributed matrices. Our numerical results confirm that the predictions of the EP method are accurate for not-only Haar distributed matrices, but also for realistic Fourier based models (e.g. the coded diffraction model). The main findings of this paper are the following: 1) There exists a threshold on $\delta $ (denoted as $\delta _{ \mathrm {weak}}$) below which the spectral method cannot produce a meaningful estimate. We show that $\delta _{ \mathrm {weak}}=2$ for the column-orthonormal model. In contrast, previous results by Mondelli and Montanari show that $\delta _{ \mathrm {weak}}=1$ for the i.i.d. When imaging through a semi-reflective medium such as glass, the reflection of another scene can often be found in the captured images. It degrades the quality of the images and affects their subsequent analyses. In this paper, a novel deep neural network approach for solving the reflection problem in imaging is presented. Traditional reflection removal methods not only require long computation time for solving different optimization functions, their performance is also not guaranteed. As array cameras are readily available in nowadays imaging devices, we first suggest in this paper a multiple-image based depth estimation method using a convolutional neural network (CNN). The proposed network avoids the depth ambiguity problem due to the reflection in the image, and directly estimates the depths along the image edges. They are then used to classify the edges as belonging to the background or reflection. Since edges having similar depth values are error prone in the classification, they are removed from the reflection removal process. We suggest a generative adversarial network (GAN) to regenerate the removed background edges. Finally, the estimated background edge map is fed to another auto-encoder network to assist the extraction of the background from the original image. Experimental results show that the proposed reflection removal algorithm achieves superior performance both quantitatively and qualitatively as compared to the state-of-the-art methods. This paper considers stochastic convex optimization problems with two sets of constraints: (a) deterministic constraints on the domain of the optimization variable, which are difficult to project onto; and (b) deterministic or stochastic constraints that admit efficient projection. Problems of this form arise frequently in the context of semidefinite programming as well as when various NP-hard problems are solved approximately via semidefinite relaxation. Since projection onto the first set of constraints is difficult, it becomes necessary to explore projection-free algorithms, such as the stochastic Frank-Wolfe (FW) algorithm. On the other hand, the second set of constraints cannot be handled in the same way, and must be incorporated as an indicator function within the objective function, thereby complicating the application of FW methods. Similar problems have been studied before; however, they suffer from slow convergence rates. This work, equipped with momentum based gradient tracking technique, guarantees fast convergence rates on par with the best-known rates for problems without the second set of constraints. Zeroth-order variants of the proposed algorithms are also developed and again improve upon the state-of-the-art rate results. We further propose the novel trimmed FW variants that enjoy the same convergence rates as their classical counterparts, but are empirically shown to require significantly fewer calls to the linear minimization oracle speeding up the overall algorithm. The efficacy of the proposed algorithms is tested on relevant applications of sparse matrix estimation, clustering via semidefinite relaxation, and uniform sparsest cut problem. As an essential problem in computer vision, salient object detection (SOD) has attracted an increasing amount of research attention over the years. Recent advances in SOD are predominantly led by deep learning-based solutions (named deep SOD). To enable in-depth understanding of deep SOD, in this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey covering various aspects, ranging from algorithm taxonomy to unsolved issues. In particular, we first review deep SOD algorithms from different perspectives, including network architecture, level of supervision, learning paradigm, and object-/instance-level detection. Following that, we summarize and analyze existing SOD datasets and evaluation metrics. Then, we benchmark a large group of representative SOD models, and provide detailed analyses of the comparison results. Moreover, we study the performance of SOD algorithms under different attribute settings, which has not been thoroughly explored previously, by constructing a novel SOD dataset with rich attribute annotations covering various salient object types, challenging factors, and scene categories. We further analyze, for the first time in the field, the robustness of SOD models to random input perturbations and adversarial attacks. We also look into the generalization and difficulty of existing SOD datasets. Finally, we discuss several open issues of SOD and outline future research directions. In context to high-dimensional clustering, the concept of feature weighting has gained considerable importance over the years to capture the relative degrees of importance of different features in revealing the cluster structure of the dataset. However, the popular techniques in this area either fail to perform feature selection or do not preserve the simplicity of Lloyd’s heuristic to solve the $k$ k -means problem and the like. In this paper, we propose a Lasso Weighted $k$ k -means ($LW$ L W - $k$ k -means) algorithm, as a simple yet efficient sparse clustering procedure for high-dimensional data where the number of features ($p$ p ) can be much higher than the number of observations ($n$ n ). The $LW$ L W - $k$ k -means method imposes an $\ell _1$ ℓ 1 regularization term involving the feature weights directly to induce feature selection in a sparse clustering framework. We develop a simple block-coordinate descent type algorithm with time-complexity resembling that of Lloyd’s method, to optimize the proposed objective. In addition, we establish the strong consistency of the $LW$ L W - $k$ k -means procedure. Such an analysis of the large sample properties is not available for the conventional sparse $k$ k -means algorithms, in general. $LW$ L W - $k$ k -means is tested on a number of synthetic and real-life datasets and through a detailed experimental analysis, we find that the performance of the method is highly competitive against the baselines as well as the state-of-the-art procedures for center-based high-dimensional clustering, not only in terms of clustering accuracy but also with respect to computational time. In this paper, we design and analyze Mc2g (Matrix Completion with 2 Graphs), an efficient algorithm that performs matrix completion in the presence of social and item similarity graphs. Mc2g runs in quasilinear time and is parameter free. It is based on spectral clustering and local refinement steps. For the matrix completion problem which possesses additional block structures in its rows and columns, we derive the expected number of sampled entries required for Mc2g to succeed, and further show that it matches an information-theoretic lower bound up to a constant factor for a wide range of parameters. We perform extensive experiments on both synthetic datasets and a semi-real dataset inspired by real graphs. Online social networks have become major battlegrounds for political campaigns, viral marketing, and the dissemination of news. As a consequence, “bad actors” are increasingly exploiting these platforms, which is a key challenge for their administrators, businesses and society in general. The spread of fake news is a classical example of the abuse of social networks by these bad actors. While some have advocated for stricter policies to control the spread of misinformation in social networks, this often happens in detriment of their democratic and organic structure. In this paper, we aim to limit the influence of a target group in a social network via the removal of a few users/links. We formulate the influence limitation problem in a data-driven fashion, by taking into account past propagation traces. More specifically, our algorithms find critical edges to be removed in order to decrease the influence of a target group based on past data. The idea is to control the diffusion processes while minimizing the amount of disturbance in the network structure. Moreover, we consider two types of constraints over edge removals, a budget constraint and also a, more general, set of matroid constraints. These problems lead to interesting challenges in terms of algorithm design. For instance, we are able to show that influence limitation is APX-hard and propose deterministic and probabilistic approximation algorithms for the budgeted and the matroid version of the problem, respectively.
